Chin Up Donuts Brings New Flavors to The Promenade
CHIN UP DONUTS IS A WOMANOWNED DONUT SHOP CREATED BY SELF-NAMED CHIEF DONUT OFFICER
ALEX MCENTIRE. Specializing in pairing spicy, savory, or unexpected glazes and piling donuts high with non-traditional toppings, Alex aims to elevate a childhood favorite all while creating a happiness brand. Chin Up’s mission is “to bring more positivity and optimism to the world, one ring of dough at a time.”
Initially her passion project, she started with a single countertop deep fryer in her apartment kitchen, playing around with unique donut flavors. She eventually traded in her corporate badge to focus on bringing smiles and sweets to the people of Scottsdale fulltime.

Waste Management Phoenix Open Preparing to Host Limited Fans
THE THUNDERBIRDS – HOSTS OF THE WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN – ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH A SCALED-DOWN VERSION OF THE 16TH HOLE IN ANTICIPATION OF HOSTING FANS AT THE 2021 TOURNAMENT, SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 1-7 AT
TPC SCOTTSDALE. Construction of the one-level, openair venue that will surround the 16th hole began in late November 2020 as tournament officials prepare for the 86th edition of “The People’s Open.” Limited ticket packages for the 16th hole venue are currently on sale to the public at WMPhoenixOpen.com.

“As we announced earlier, the footprint for the 2021 tournament will be entirely different due to COVID-19,” says 2021 Tournament Chairman Scott Jenkins. “But we always hoped to have some kind of presence at our iconic 16th hole with or even without our fans. After many discussions with the PGA TOUR and local health officials, we are moving forward with a plan to have limited spectators at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Ultimately, if the decision is made by local health officials to allow spectators, it will be a small fraction of the normal capacity at TPC Scottsdale and not any different from what many other professional sports are currently allowing across the country. The health and safety of fans is our top priority.”
“The 192-acre layout of TPC Scottsdale and the outdoor nature of the tournament is conducive to social distancing. We will implement COVID safety protocols not only on the 16th hole, but also throughout the entire tournament grounds in order to mitigate risk for the players, volunteers and limited fans.”
SCOTTSDALE RESIDENTS WHO WANT TO INSTITUTE POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE CITY CAN APPLY TO SERVE ON ADVISORY BOARDS OR COMMISSIONS, WHICH ARE RESIDENTS APPOINTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL TO ADVISE THE COUNCIL ON SPECIFIC TOPIC AREAS. THESE ARE THE 11 THAT HAVE OPENINGS:
• Airport Advisory Commission • Board of Adjustment “As we work with The Thunderbirds in receiving approval from local and state governments in regard to the number of ticketed spectators and guests at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, we remain committed to health and safety as the No. 1 priority,” says PGA TOUR Chief of Operations Tyler Dennis. “With that as a backdrop, we are examining a variety of options that will enable the tournament to continue its traditions as a one-of-a-kind fan experience while enriching the Greater Phoenix community through charitable giving.”

The 2021 WM Phoenix Open will be held at TPC Scottsdale February 1-7. “The People’s Open” was named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA TOUR four times in the past six years (2014, 2015, 2018, • Building Advisory Board of Appeals • Environmental Advisory Commission • Historic Preservation Commission • Industrial Development Authority • Judicial Appointments Advisory Board • McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission • Parks and Recreation Commission • Tourism Development Commission (Scottsdale
Hotelier Representative position) • Veterans Advisory Commission 2019) to acknowledge the tournament’s legendary status as one the most unique events in golf. The 2021 edition will mark the 86th playing of the event (one of the five oldest events on the PGA TOUR) and the 12th as the WM Phoenix Open.

The Thunderbirds were founded in 1937 with the mission of promoting the Valley of the Sun through sports. The Thunderbirds consist of 55 “active” members and more than 280 “life” members. The Thunderbirds raised a record $14 million for charity from proceeds from the 2020 WM Phoenix Open and have eclipsed $161 million in charitable giving since its inception in 1932. Neighbors Help Neighbors with Scottsdale’s Brown Bag Program
By Jan Horne THE DARK, CALM EARLY THURSDAY MORNING IS A STARK CONTRAST TO THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE TAKING PLACE INSIDE THE BRIGHTLY LIT CITY OF SCOTTSDALE GRANITE REEF SENIOR CENTER.
Herrick is helping Desert Mission and St. Mary’s Food Bank unload delivered food targeted for the city’s Brown Bag Program. He safely works alongside a handful of other staff to put together care packages for our most vulnerable residents: homebound, disabled and lowincome seniors.
The senior centers’ Brown Bag Program supplies protein, bread, fruits and vegetables to 240 eligible residents the first and third Thursday of each month. Each bag contains about 15 pounds of food valued at $25.50. The program has been in existence for 20 years. Resident Helen Hawkins has been receiving bags for three years. She’s grateful for the food and says, “There’s always plenty, including fresh fruits and vegetables that I don’t always have easy access to.” Besides being a recipient, Helen also volunteers by delivering Brown Bags to other people who live in her retirement building.
Human Services Representative Kevin
HOW SCOTTSDALE FUNDS THE PROGRAM
The nonprofit Scottsdale Community Partners contributes significantly to this program, providing funding for the food purchases and delivery requirements. Now, the CARES Act also is providing dollars to ensure the program continues seamlessly during COVID-19.
The city received $29 million in CARES Act funding and has allocated the money to two funding priorities: Community Investment and City Operations. About $3 million is helping care for our most vulnerable citizens through services such as the Brown Bag Program, employment training, and the recent Adopt-a-Family holiday donation program.

HOW YOU CAN HELP – OR GET HELP
Herrick said he can always use extra help ensuring our seniors are well taken care of. People can volunteer to deliver bags or make monetary contributions. Learn more at scottsdalecommunitypartners. org/program/brown-bag.
In addition, he encourages people who need help – or know of people who need help – to contact the Granite Reef Senior Center at 480-312-1700.
A Local Church Helps to Bridge the Digital Divide
Information Courtesy of Scottsdale Bible Church TODAY, MOST STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO USE TECHNOLOGY AT HOME, BUT MILLIONS DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO COMPUTERS OR INTERNET AND RISK
FALLING BEHIND IN THEIR EDUCATION. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on this crisis known as the Digital Divide, revealing the millions of K-12 students who are unable to navigate distance learning. These children face long-term social, academic, emotional and economic challenges as a result.
Thirty percent of Arizona students lack high-speed internet access and 20% do not have access to appropriate devices. These inequities in education have been exacerbated by COVID-19, creating an urgent need to give kids equal access to technology for remote learning. In our state alone, thousands of kids have vanished from the school system because their teachers cannot contact them remotely.

Together with the City of Phoenix and School Connect, a local nonprofit, Scottsdale Bible Church (SBC) wants to help close the digital divide in Phoenix by providing 9,640 laptops. The plan is to: • Raise $1 million to purchase 5,265 laptops at $190 each for students in every City of Phoenix school district that reported a need. These districts will
check out laptops to students so they can do homework and participate in distance learning as needed. • The City of Phoenix will purchase the additional 4,375 laptops needed in these districts using
CARES Act funding. • SBC and the City of Phoenix will reach out to businesses to help provide high-speed internet service for kids in these districts.

Sam Baker Inspires Kids Through His Second Children’s Book
EVERYBODY COULD USE SOME JOY AND A REMINDER THAT WE ARE
ALL CONNECTED. Scottsdale author Sam Baker promotes this through his children’s books.
Baker is a 98-year-old former Marine who served in World War ll. Today, his passion is creating stories that bring the joy of reading and imagination to children of all ages. Oscar the Mouse is Baker’s second work in as many years. His first, The Silly Adventures of Petunia and Herman the Worm, is an award-winning chapter book about unconditional love.
Oscar the Mouse is a timely picture book with a message about inclusivity and the joy of finding a new friend. As a result, both find more love and laughter in their lives.
Baker wants children and adults alike to learn how to imagine the world as a better place - a place filled with love, harmony, hope, and joy. “If you can imagine it, you can create it,” he says. This fun and entertaining experience gives all of us a chance to escape the stress of everyday life and be appreciated by others.
Baker was raised in an inclusive household. His father emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1890s where he experienced the wrath of antisemitism. Upon arriving in America, he vowed to treat everyone with respect and kindness. “Everyone was equal. This is how both of my parents raised me and our family in Clarksdale, Mississippi during the height of the depression.”

To help children stay positive during the pandemic, and because reading is the foundation of all learning, Baker will be reading from his books and posting the videos on Facebook (search for Oscar The Mouse) and Instagram (@author_ sambaker).
“My goal is to create a creative community where kids share their artwork and ideas so we emerge from this pandemic stronger as a community,” he says.
To kick off this idea, Baker will be giving away his books, stickers, and other prizes to children who post drawings of anything they love or by coloring his free coloring pages and posting them on his Facebook pages – Oscar the Mouse or The Silly Adventures of Petunia and Herman the Worm – by January 20. The images that get the most likes will win prizes as will the drawings that are voted most original.

Arizona DPS to Enforce Distracted Driving Law
By Sergeant Kameron Lee, Arizona Department of Public Safety NINETY FOUR PERCENT OF CRASHES THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (ARIZONA DPS) INVESTIGATES ARE DUE TO DRIVER ERROR, MEANING 94% OF THE CRASHES ARE
COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE. Distraction remains a common theme in many of the crashes we respond to. Beginning this month, Arizona DPS will enforce the law signed last year that says it is “Illegal in Arizona to talk or text on a cellphone while driving unless the device is in a hands-free mode.” This law prohibits drivers from using a cellphone or a standalone electronic device while driving unless it is being used in a hands-free mode. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, tablets, music and gaming devices. A “stand-alone electronic device” is a portable device other than a portable wireless communication device that stores audio or video data files to be retrieved on demand by a user.
We want people to think of the consequences of distracted driving now, not after a crash has happened. If someone is hurt, or worse, loses their life because you chose to look at a text, scroll social media or even looked down to follow the GPS on your phone, the consequences can be life altering and life changing. The hardest part of a trooper’s job is knocking on the door of a home and telling the people living there that their family member isn’t coming home. We are asking for voluntary compliance of the hands-free law. In our day and age, we have the technology that allows us to safely operate our vehicles without phones or other electronics in our hands. That one text or that one phone call isn’t worth it. This is more than a text and driving ban. You cannot hold your phone or any portable electronic communication device in your hand while driving–you don’t have to be texting to be in violation.
THREE INSTANCES WHERE YOU CAN USE YOUR PHONE INCLUDE: 1. Using GPS navigation while the phone is docked. 2. Talking on the phone via Bluetooth or other hands-free devices. 3. Calling 9-1-1. WHAT YOU CANNOT DO: 1. Holding your phone to make or answer a call (except a 9-1-1 call). 2. Read or send text messages, emails, etc. 3. Hold or support the device with your body.
