2021 Last Year for Solar Investment Tax Credits
T
he Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) can help pay for 22% of the total cost of installing a solar system in 2021. That subsidy is going to $0 in 2022. A homeowner who would like to receive that benefit must have the solar system install by the end of 2021 to qualify. The credit is calculated by multiplying 22% of the total system cost. This includes all equipment, labor, materials, engineering and permit fees. It can also include any costs to upgrade the home electrical infrastructure such as stepping up from a 200 AMP Main Panel to a 400 AMP Main Panel electrical service. APS requires this for homes that are installing systems that are more than 15KW in size. It also equips a home for future electrical upgrades such as pools, spas, RV garages, casitas and electric cars. It may also include roofing repairs and applicable portions of a home re-roofing. Getting your home re-roofed in conjunction with your solar system installation can not only reduce your cost of getting that done it can be included in the $0 down solar financing. With solar financing programs taking advantage of the very low interest rates you could finance a solar system and new roof for as low as 1.49% APR and end up with a new roof and solar system for less than what you are paying now for just your current average monthly electric bill. The tax credit is applied to your federal income taxes and can greatly reduce, or even eliminate, what you owe. Anyone who pays for a solar panel installation on their home or business property they own can claim the solar tax credit. It will provide a dollar for dollar reduction in in their federal tax liability. Instead of the IRS keeping the money that you will pay in federal taxes this year they will return it to you to invest in the solar

project in the amount of the tax credit. Keep in mind, you can’t take a credit larger than the amount of taxes you will pay, because the ITC is a “non-refundable” tax credit.You can, however, claim the credit over more than one year, and carry any leftover amount forward to the next year. You must also be the owner of the solar system in order to qualify for the solar tax credit. If you choose to get solar through a lease program then the solar leasing company would take the tax credit and reduce the lease payment accordingly.This can be a good alternative for homeowners that do not have a substantial tax liability. There is no maximum credit — the total tax credit is simply based on the cost of the system and how much tax liability you have. In addition, the State of Arizona provides a $1000 state tax credit which remains in effect for 2021. Also, in sharp contrast to utility bills, the sale of solar systems and monthly payments for solar are held as tax exempt by state and local municipalities for sales tax. To claim the residential credit, complete Form 5695 along with Form 1040 when you file your income taxes. The instructions for Form 5695 are fairly easy to follow, and include a worksheet to help you figure out how much of the credit you can claim this year. The Arizona Fine Art EXPO to Take Place with COVID-19 Safety Precautions WILLIAM DAGGETT’S SCULPTURES START IN A PLACE MANY MAY NOT EXPECT – THE FORESTS OF NORTHERN ARIZONA AND SOUTHERN UTAH. Each year, Daggett takes several days and hikes many miles in search of the perfect juniper branches to transform into beautiful, moving sculptures. Local residents can see Daggett work his magic on the juniper limbs during the Arizona Fine Art EXPO, taking place from Friday, Jan. 15 – Sunday, March 28 under the “festive white tents” at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road.
The Arizona Fine Art EXPO, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, features 120 patron-friendly artist studios in a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their journey, inspiration and techniques. Throughout the 10-week event, patrons can enjoy watching artisans sketch in rapiograph, pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; chisel, carve and shape stone; scratch and etch on porcelain and clay board, and saw and carve wood sculptures. Artists will also paint in all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; design and create jewelry; and assemble mosaics. Art is for sale during the event and commissions are welcomed. WILLIAM DAGGETT A developer by trade, Daggett has spent his career working on commercial, residential and custom home projects. He’s always enjoyed creating new things and has tried his hand at stained glass, furniture building and jewelry design. He found his true passion 15 years ago when he began carving wood. “I started with a chainsaw, caving bears and eagles. It wasn’t rewarding enough so

hand and high-speed tools to create the shape he’s looking for. He then begins the painstaking process of sanding the piece, working his way through five different grits of sandpaper and finishing with hand rubbed Danish oil. A finished piece can take Daggett anywhere from a 40-hour week to several months to complete.
I moved on to cottonwood bark carving,” says Daggett. “Then I discovered a twisted piece of juniper while walking our dog in Utah. I’ve been hooked ever since.” Daggett backpacks out interesting limbs from dead trees during his forest searches. In a typical three-day trip, he’ll see thousands of trees and come home with fewer than 20 pieces of wood for his sculptures. After he returns home, Daggett takes time to decide with his wife what each piece of wood should become. Once he has a vision for the piece, he uses both

City News Waste Management Phoenix Open Preparing to Host Limited Fans THE THUNDERBIRDS – HOSTS OF THE WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN – ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH A SCALED-DOWN VERSION OF THE 16TH HOLE IN ANTICIPATION OF HOSTING FANS AT THE 2021 TOURNAMENT, SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 1-7 AT TPC SCOTTSDALE. Construction of the one-level, openair venue that will surround the 16th hole began in late November 2020 as tournament officials prepare for the 86th edition of “The People’s Open.” Limited ticket packages for the 16th hole venue are currently on sale to the public at WMPhoenixOpen.com. “As we announced earlier, the footprint for the 2021 tournament will be entirely different due to COVID-19,” says 2021 Tournament Chairman Scott Jenkins. “But we always hoped to have some kind of presence at our iconic 16th hole with or even without our fans. After many discussions with the PGA TOUR and local health officials, we are moving forward with a plan to have limited spectators at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. We see this scenario all the time in our clinic. In fact, over 80% of the cases that come through our doors have a component of chronic back pain. Just recently a woman “Jessica” came to us with back pain that had been giving her problems since her second-born. At this point it had been 10 years. She had tried yoga, stretching, strength training, massage, chiropractic, and even physical therapy. Each of these things helped a little bit, but it always seemed to come back. Occasionally it would be just in her back, but she’d sometimes feel it in her glutes and hips as well. Was something wrong? Did she perhaps need an x-ray or another MRI? These were things that were on her mind, but she had some of these tests done in the past and they showed her that other than “normal wear and tear” nothing was wrong...she was frustrated. It’s not that she “wanted” something to be wrong necessarily. She just wanted answers. Can you relate? Many others we see like Jessica, have a similar situation, and their imaging shows degenerating discs. They’ve been told that surgery or painkillers are their only options. While it’s true, that everyone north of 30 years old has some degree of degeneration (hello gravity), the good news is that studies have decisively shown that there are millions of people walking around with degeneration and arthritis who never have pain. The flip side is that there is also a large number of people in their 20’s-30’s who have severe pain, and have little to no degeneration. This was the case with Jessica. So if it’s not degeneration or arthritis causing the pain, what is? The answer is soft tissue inflammation. Your back is made up of much more than just your bones. Your soft tissue includes your tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves, and fascia. More often than not, back pain starts with soft tissue injury that never gets fully resolved. Sure the pain goes away for a little while, but the effects remain after a back injury unless they’re corrected. Research has demonstrated, that when you have an initial back injury, your body tightens up to protect itself. Over time this protective pattern gets programmed into your brain. The problem is that even when your body heals, this pattern remains. This leads to compensations, which eventually result in further injury and inflammation. The most important thing you need to know about is that this can be COMPLETELY REVERSED with the right conditions and movements. If the answer to Jessica’s back pain was as simple as just a little inflammation, anti-inflammatory medicine would surely knock it right out. The issue is that it’s repeat inflammation due to an altered pattern between her brain and her muscles.
All signs were pointing to this issue with Jessica’s back. After several movements to test her spine, we were able to reproduce her EXACT symptoms and pain. With some different movement tests we were able to eliminate her symptoms entirely. Since movements were able to turn her symptoms on and off, we were able to confirm that this was a movement problem. Her back kept getting inflamed because her body was trying to heal the tissues that were being overworked. Pretty exciting, right? Jessica thought so. She was hopeful at the thought of being able to play outdoors with her kids without needing to consider if she’d need to take anti-inflammatory medicine first. Most importantly, she was happy to finally have some answers to this 10 year problem. She stopped doing the things that only gave her temporary relief, and instead turned her attention to fixing the movement problem. The rest is history. Sadly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen cases like Jessica’s in our clinic. City News Neighbors Help Neighbors with Scottsdale’s Brown Bag Program By Jan Horne THE DARK, CALM EARLY THURSDAY MORNING IS A STARK CONTRAST TO THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE TAKING PLACE INSIDE THE BRIGHTLY LIT CITY OF SCOTTSDALE GRANITE REEF SENIOR CENTER. Human Services Representative Kevin Herrick is helping Desert Mission and St. Mary’s Food Bank unload delivered food targeted for the city’s Brown Bag Program. He safely works alongside a handful of other staff to put together care packages for our most vulnerable residents: homebound, disabled and lowincome seniors. The senior centers’ Brown Bag Program supplies protein, bread, fruits and vegetables to 240 eligible residents the first and third Thursday of each month. Each bag contains about 15 pounds of food valued at $25.50. The program has been in existence for 20 years.
Resident Helen Hawkins has been receiving bags for three years. She’s grateful for the food and says, “There’s always plenty, including fresh fruits and vegetables that I don’t always have easy access to.” Besides being a recipient, Helen also volunteers by delivering Brown Bags to other people who live in her retirement building. HOW SCOTTSDALE FUNDS THE PROGRAM The nonprofit Scottsdale Community Partners contributes significantly to this program, providing funding for the food purchases and delivery requirements. Now, the CARES Act also is providing dollars to ensure the program continues seamlessly during COVID-19. The city received $29 million in CARES Act funding and has allocated the money to two funding priorities: Community Investment and City Operations. About $3 million is helping care for our most vulnerable citizens through services such

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on this crisis known as the Digital Divide, revealing the millions of K-12 students who are unable to navigate distance learning. These children face long-term social, academic, emotional and economic challenges as a result. Thirty percent of Arizona students lack high-speed internet access and 20% do not have access to

appropriate devices. These inequities in education have been exacerbated by COVID-19, creating an urgent need to give kids equal access to technology for remote learning. In our state alone, thousands of kids have vanished from the school system because their teachers cannot contact them remotely. Together with the City of Phoenix and School Connect, a local nonprofit, Scottsdale Bible Church (SBC) wants to help close the digital divide in Phoenix by providing 9,640 laptops. The plan is to: • Raise $1 million to purchase 5,265 laptops at $190 each for students in every City of Phoenix school district that reported a need. These districts will
check out laptops to students so they can do homework and participate in distance learning as needed. • The City of Phoenix will purchase the additional 4,375 laptops needed in these districts using CARES Act funding. • SBC and the City of Phoenix will reach out to businesses to help provide high-speed internet service for kids in these districts. This is how both of my parents raised me and our family in Clarksdale, Mississippi during the height of the depression.” To help children stay positive during the pandemic, and because reading is the foundation of all learning, Baker will be reading from his books and posting the videos on Facebook (search for Oscar The Mouse) and Instagram (@author_ sambaker). “My goal is to create a creative community where kids share their artwork and ideas so we emerge from this pandemic stronger as a community,” he says. Arizona DPS to Enforce Distracted Driving Law By Sergeant Kameron Lee, Arizona Department of Public Safety NINETY FOUR PERCENT OF CRASHES THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (ARIZONA DPS) INVESTIGATES ARE DUE TO DRIVER ERROR, MEANING 94% OF THE CRASHES ARE COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE. Distraction remains a common theme in many of the crashes we respond to. Beginning this month, Arizona DPS will enforce the law signed last year that says it is “Illegal in Arizona to talk or text on a cellphone while driving unless the device is in a hands-free mode.” This law prohibits drivers from using a cellphone or a standalone electronic device while driving unless it is being used in a hands-free mode. This includes, but is not limited to,
cell phones, tablets, music and gaming devices. A “stand-alone electronic device” is a portable device other than a portable wireless communication device that stores audio or video data files to be retrieved on demand by a user. We want people to think of the consequences of distracted driving now, not after a crash has happened. If someone is hurt, or worse, loses their life because you chose to look at a text, scroll social media or even looked down to follow the GPS on your phone, the consequences can be life altering and life changing. The hardest part of a trooper’s job is knocking on the door of a home and telling the people living there that their family member isn’t coming home. We

are asking for voluntary compliance of the hands-free law. In our day and age, we have the technology that allows us to safely operate our vehicles without phones or other electronics in our hands. That one text or that one phone call isn’t worth it. This is more than a text and driving ban. You cannot hold your phone or any portable electronic communication device in your hand while driving–you don’t have to be texting to be in violation.

WILD ANIMAL RESCUE IN ARIZONA By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
O
ne of the many reasons we love living in the Sonoran Desert is that it is home to an abundance of wildlife. Coyotes and their kits roam freely across the desert behind our home, while hawks, owls, and falcons soar above the mountains throughout the metro area. We have frequent visits from hummingbirds and bats, with the occasional Javelina scavenging for food down the block. But living in such close quarters with wild animals can take its toll on both humans and wildlife. As the Phoenix metro area has grown over the years, our love of wildlife in the Valley has given rise to some fantastic nonprofit animal sanctuaries and rescue facilities. Many of these facilities are open to the public and are a great way to get your kids interested in science and
nature. If you and your family need help with a wild animal rescue or want to lend your support to helping these efforts, take a look at these local organizations.
SOUTHWEST WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER southwestwildlife.org One of the leading wildlife sanctuaries in the southwestern United States can be found in northeast Scottsdale, just north of McDowell Mountain Regional Park. The Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWCC) is a nonprofit organization that has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of wild animals for more than 25 years. The main goal of SWCC is to release the animals back into the wild. However, their accredited sanctuary also provides a home for those animals that cannot be released. The SWCC facility is open to the public 365 days a year to provide education and help inspire people to learn about and respect native wildlife and conserve its habitat. The sanctuary is home to native wildlife from around the southwest and is proud to offer space at their sanctuary to care for part of the captive Mexican Wolf population as a member of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP). PHOENIX HERPETOLOGICAL SANCTUARY phoenixherp.com The Phoenix Herpetological Society (PHS) is one of the premier reptile sanctuaries in the country. This North Scottsdale based organization and its research facility works with private citizens, rescue organizations, and state and federal wildlife officials and law enforcement to house and care for rescued, unwanted, or seized reptiles from across the United States. Most of the hundreds of animals at the sanctuary were abandoned, abused, or confiscated from individuals who possessed them illegally. PHS was started almost 20 years ago to provide a refuge for unwanted or rescued reptiles around the state due to a lack of specific knowledge and understanding of the special care and housing required for reptiles by other rescue agencies. The organization believes that conservation begins with education and their volunteers spend countless hours visiting schools and educational locations around the Valley to educate the public about reptiles and how important they are to our ecosystem. The facility is

open by appointment only, but they do host birthday parties, lead field trips, and conduct classroom programs, professional development workshops, and venomous snake training courses for the public.
WILD AT HEART wildatheartraptors.org Wild At Heart in Cave Creek is a rescue, rehabilitation, and release center specifically for raptors and birds of prey. This organization focuses on rehabilitating and rescuing injured owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles with a goal to release them back into the wild. Wild At Heart also works to relocate displaced burrowing owls, manage species recovery programs and habitat enhancement projects, and provide educational presentations to schools and other organizations. This facility is open to the general public by special appointment only, but they do provide educational presentations upon request. LIBERTY WILDLIFE libertywildlife.org Liberty Wildlife, located in the heart of downtown Phoenix just south of Sky Harbor Airport, has been helping Arizona rehabilitate and release thousands of wild animals every year for almost 40 years. The organization cares for between 7,000 and 8,000 animals every year and has a release rate of over 50%, well above the national average. You can find animals that they were not able to be rereleased in many zoos, nature centers, and breeding facilities as wildlife ambassadors for conservation around the state. As strong believers in educating the public, especially children, Liberty Wildlife provides world class educational programs with trained wildlife handlers and teachers using well-conditioned educational raptors who have been deemed non-releasable. The organization provides hundreds of programs each year for the public in a variety of settings. They also host field trips, summer camp, activities for kids, and a special program for Eagle Scouts. These are just a few of the many nonprofit organizations in the Valley of the Sun that rescue injured and displaced wildlife in Arizona. Family The Free January 16 Itty Bitty Open Introduces The Littlest of Golfers to the Sport
I
n its thirty third year, the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) will host the 2021 Itty Bitty Open on January 16 at numerous Valley-wide locations. Open to all kids age 3-5 years old, the free event offers three clinic times per location starting a 9, 10 and 11 a.m. where juniors and their parents will learn the basics skills of golf taught by qualified PGA and LPGA professionals. Locally, the event takes place at Cashman Park and Scottsdale Ranch Park. After the clinics, the kids will then participate in fun-filled, non-competitive golf games and tournaments. Each golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs (right-handed only), balls, a bag, and a visor – participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer.
“The Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” says Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “In fact, after 33 years, adults who attended Itty Bitty Open decades ago are now bringing their kids, so the second generation is already here.” A special contest with prizes will be held at each session for the “Best Dressed Golfer and Caddie Team.” Anything goes: classic golf fashion; contemporary golf fashion; or any unique golf duds that may come to mind. s we start the New Year, I want to talk about older methods of estate planning versus newer, more efficient and cost-effective means of planning. Your estate is simply what you own. For most reading this article, that at least includes a home, a retirement account, bank accounts and maybe a brokerage account. In the not-sodistant past, planning for your estate at death meant preparing a Last Will and Testament. Today, we use the Revocable Living Trust more often.
HERE ARE A FEW ADVANTAGES OF USING THE TRUST: The Revocable Living Trust Helps You if You Are Incapacitated Both a Will and a Revocable Living Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Revocable Living Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets should you become incapacitated. In the Trust, you name your successor trustee who steps into your shoes to pay your bills and manage your finances when you can’t.
There are many benefits to using the Revocable Living Trust, but often people think that only the wealthy need a Trust. I think that instead, we should consider the Trust as simply the more modern way of planning
A Revocable Living Trust Avoids Probate and Reduces Expenses A Will says who will receive the assets in your estate after your death, but it does not automatically transfer your assets. Instead, your executor

must probate the estate, starting with submitting the Will and an application to the probate court and asking the court to appoint them executor. Until they have the appointment papers, they cannot do anything with your estate. A Revocable Living Trust, on the other hand, appoints your successor trustee who can step in to take charge of your estate promptly. The Trustee can quickly gather, sell and distribute your assets to your beneficiaries with no need for a court’s involvement. How the Trust Works When you set up a Trust, you transfer assets from yourself to the trust. While you are alive and able, you are the Trustee and the only beneficiary. For a married couple, managing your assets in the trust won’t feel much different than it does when you hold your assets in joint tenancy. You
maintain full control of your assets, doing the same things with them you did before: write checks, buy and sell, direct your stockbroker. Even your income tax returns stay the same. Transferring assets to the Trust is also relatively simple. In my office, we transfer all of the Arizona real estate into your trust and assist you in retitling your other assets. Once you understand how to title assets, you won’t need to call us unless you want our help. The Revocable Living Trust makes sense for most of us. Also, most lenders allowed payment deferrals and those repayments will soon be coming due. Surely, we are heading for another 2007/2008 market collapse all over again.

Sorry to burst your bubble but there will be no bubble this time around. How can we be so sure? Well, the underlying conditions are different today. Back in 2005 and 2006 the market skyrocketed upward due to wild speculation and easy money. Buyers with no business owning a home were able to qualify for no documentation loans, “doctor feelgood” appraisers were asking “How much do you want it to appraise for?” and lenders were punching the tickets for the ride. The expectation back then was that a buyer could just hold the property a few months and then resell at a profit. When the bubble burst, Maricopa County housing inventory swelled to more than sixty thousand unsellable homes. The banks stepped in and prices dropped by half. Today’s market rise is much different. Now, we have a shortage of homes for sale. Some days we have only 8,000 homes on the market and some months we sell more houses than that. This has driven prices up, increasing everyone’s equity.
A homeowner who cannot pay their mortgage today because of the pandemic will easily be able to sell their house long before the 90-day foreclosure process could take it away from them. Actually, this market could quickly go to 20,000 homes with no downward pressure on price. So, breathe easy and have no fear. This market is solid. You can buy today with confidence and reasonably expect to sell whenever you want to. ARRIVE Phoenix is an allnew 79-room, $25 million boutique hotel spanning two restored mid-century modern towers at Camelback Road and 4th Avenue (400 W. Camelback). Opening in two phases, guests will be able to check in at the colorful Pop Stand, a handcrafted popsicle shop that doubles as the registration desk, plus enjoy the onsite Cartel Coffee Lab or lounge around the Lylo Swim Club. Then soon, the second guestroom tower featuring the Don Woods’ Say When rooftop bar is scheduled to open. Of course, the world has changed since ARRIVE Phoenix kicked off construction more than a year ago, but guests can rest assured that every step has been taken to ensure their safety, says ARRIVE Hotels & Restaurants CEO and Co-Founder Matt Steinberg. “From touchless on-site payments, to sanitized and pre-bagged linens and bathrobes, every aspect of the guest experience has been thoughtfully redesigned for today’s hospitality world.” This includes the use of Hospital-Grade Electrostatic Disinfection machines utilizing a non-toxic disinfectant solution (the same technology deployed in hospitals) to sanitize guestrooms before and after any staff member enters the room. Plus, guests are required to wear masks in all public areas.
