TEMPE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY AS CITY HOLIDAY
The city of Tempe will celebrate Indigenous People’s Day on October 9 this year as a paid city of Tempe holiday. The Tempe City Council approved the holiday at its September 7 regular council meeting.
Phoenix, Minneapolis, Denver, and other cities already recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the cultural heritage, history, and contributions of Native American and Indigenous communities. By adopting Indigenous Peoples' Day, the city of Tempe is demonstrating its commitment to being a more inclusive and culturally diverse community.
“I got choked up the moment that Mayor Woods announced that this resolution passed 7-0,” says Councilmember Doreen Garlid, who serves on the Local Indigenous Leaders committee for the National League of Cities. “I am so thankful to our council and staff for creating and approving Indigenous Peoples'
Day as a city holiday. This is one more step that we have taken to show our commitment that Tempe’s Land Acknowledgement Resolution would be more than just words.”

Dining Family-Owned Business Booming

New fast-casual Mexican dining experience opens in Tempe.

Photos courtesy of Pronto by Serrano’s
The Serrano family, which owns and operates four Serrano’s Mexican Restaurant locations in the East Valley, recently opened a new fast-casual concept sure to take Tempe by storm.
Pronto by Serrano’s has a focus on fresh flavors where you can build-your-own combos and dishes. There are a multitude of options at the fast-casual dining spot, giving just about anyone in your party a choice of meals.

The restaurant, located at 6440 S. Rural Rd., in Tempe, features burritos, nachos, bowls, salads, tacos, and more. Guests can build their own specialty dish with protein options such as asada steak, shredded chicken, machaca, tomatillo pork, Al Pastor chicken, birria, cod, and fajita vegetables.

If you would prefer to try out one of their specialty items, already selected, they have a number of options on that end as well. There are several already prepared selections including quesabirria tacos, spicy fish tacos, and chicken tortilla soup. There are also some amazing options including Stephanie’s stacked enchilada with corn tortillas, shredded cheese, a protein of your choice, enchilada sauce, queso fresco, cilantro, and lime. There is also the Sparky burrito which is shredded chicken, mixed with Spanish rice and pinto beans, served with shredded cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, and crema. The Sparky burrito is a great deal for ASU students who show their school ID – it’s just $5 for those lucky students! Ramen more your style? Then be sure to check out the birria ramen with birria beef, cabbage, green onion, and cilantro in birria consommé.
You can also customize your meals and plates with a variety of toppings and sauces, as well as add side options such as their famous bean dip, chips, and salsa.

Perhaps one of the coolest features you’ll find upon your visit to Pronto is the robot who works alongside the employees, delivering food to tables and guests who opt to dine in the restaurant. The robot is part of the team and is there to help give guests a welcoming and entertaining experience.
The Serrano family has been in the restaurant business for decades and the Pronto name is significant to the family, as it is the name of a food business that Stephanie Serrano operated near St. Louis before she passed away from breast cancer in 2019. Stephanie was one of eight sibling owners of Serrano’s Mexican Restaurants.

Education Tempe Arts Grants Elevate Kyrene Classrooms with Professional Artist Collaborations

Kyrene students and teachers are set to enjoy enhanced classroom experiences, courtesy of the city of Tempe’s Arts in Schools Grants. A select group of educators will welcome professional artists affiliated with the city of Tempe into their classrooms, bringing added expertise and a fresh perspective. In addition to the invaluable knowledge shared by these artists, the grants will facilitate the purchase of instruments and essential supplies for student theatre productions and various art projects.
Annually, Kyrene teachers vie for the Tempe Arts grants, with provisions allowing up to $750 for supplies. This year, however, Tempe has sweetened the pot. They've awarded educators grants of $2,000 to incorporate professional artists into their lesson plans. From this amount, $1,500 compensates the artist, while the
remaining $500 goes towards acquiring supplies. Impressively, these resources will remain with the school even after the artist completes their tenure. The lucky beneficiaries of these grants span educators from Kyrene’s fine arts, performing arts, and music departments. The funds will benefit projects and classrooms across four Kyrene institutions for the 2023-24 academic year.
At Kyrene de los Niños, art teacher Linda Sun secured funding, ensuring that Kyrene de los Niños students will receive mentorship from a seasoned artist during this school year.
Over at Kyrene del Norte, music maestro Scott Harnisch will leverage the grant to enhance Kyrene del Norte’s annual drama production.
Meanwhile, C.I. Waggoner's art instruc-
tor, Caitlin Sabato, plans to invest in art supplies for the school’s budding artists. In harmony with her, music teachers Whitney Cuzzolina and Jessica Van Oostrom intend to use their grant to introduce ukuleles to Waggoner’s musical ensemble.
Kyrene Middle School is equally abuzz with excitement. Band director Selena Ryan has acquired funding that promises professional mentorship for the school's band members. Similarly, chorus director and music educator, Hannah Kimball, will use her grant to provide specialized training for the KMS chorus students. Additionally, orchestra and mariachi teacher
Julio Contreras has secured funding that will usher in a seasoned artist to refine students' skills.
But the benefits don't end there. Each artist will also conduct a 90-minute professional development workshop tailored for Kyrene teachers in their respective disciplines. These initiatives underscore the commitment to nurturing continuous learning and fostering creativity, substantially elevating the offerings at Kyrene schools.

Community support is at the heart of our family and business values."
Barro’s Pizza is a family-owned and operated pizza restaurant with 48 locations in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. The Barro’s Pizza recipe comes from Grandma Angelina Barro who came from Italy in the 1930s, making a pizza unlike any other. People may disagree on whether it's the thick crust with its light, flakey texture, or the tangy and sweet spiced sauce that is the secret of this
great tasting pizza. Barro’s Pizza also offers wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, gluten-free pizza options, dessert, beer and wine.
Since its inception in 2012, the Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has granted $105,000 to Arizona students. ANTI-GRAVITY GYROS Kids’ Corner
By Sari CusterGravity got you down? Explore ways to overcome it by building and testing an anti-gravity device. Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that objects at rest tend to
stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion (unless acted on by an outside force). Centripetal forces are any forces (gravitational, electrical/atomic, or tension) that move inward, toward the fixed center of the circular motion. In this activity, the string attached to the cup creates a centripetal force and
when the circular motion of the cup moves faster than the horizontal motion (inertia) of the water/objects. As a result, the water/objects stay in the cup.
SUPPLIES
• A 9 oz. paper or plastic cup
• One (1) sharpened pencil
• One to five (1-5) pennies or marbles
• Water
• Two 2-ft. long pieces of string

Carolyn Berry, owner of Clean Colonic, has always been passionate about helping people. But it wasn’t until her own health issues and years of suffering that she turned to colonics for the answer to unlocking the mystery of her own health – leading her down the path to becoming a successful business owner today.

Berry is the proud owner of four Clean Colonic locations and has been in business since 2016. Her business locations can be found in Tempe, Phoenix/ Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, and Glendale. Prior to owning her own company, Berry, a competitive women’s doubles sand volleyball player, was a massage therapist for 15 years. She then took a corporate job managing spas in a fitness center for nearly eight years where she developed systems and helped grow the business.

After leaving that role, she wrote a book titled “I’m Happy. How Did I Get Here?” that included a program to lead people from chaos to happiness. And while happy, Berry was struggling with life-impacting health issues.
“I had a lot of food allergies and was allergic to almost all foods. For example, I ate cheese pizza once and had to go to the ER! In fact, I had to walk around with liquid Benadryl in case my stomach swelled up,” she recalls. “I also had a lot of problems with my uterus. I had cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and was diagnosed with adenomyosis. My doctor recommended that I get a hysterectomy because I had been suffering with these issues for more than 20 years. Instead, I opted to look for other solutions.”
“A friend suggested that I get a colonic. Even though I didn’t think they were connected, I was desperate
Because of this amazing, life changing experience, Berry took a new career direction and became dedicated to helping people through colon hydrotherapy.
“I never thought I’d be in this business, let alone have multiple locations,” she says. “But it’s very satisfying to educate people on other ways to assist their body; not just for constipation and weight loss, but for other issues they may have. More and more research is coming out that everything starts in the gut — and I believe it.”
Berry opened her first location in Tempe because the California native was living in the area at the time. “I started with just one device in one room,” she says. But a short two years later, she was so busy that she made the decision to move into her own clinic, bought two more devices, and was then approached with an opportunity to open a Phoenix/Scottsdale location. “Two months later, and with three more devices, I opened our second location on Tatum and Thunderbird.”
The location in Fountain Hills came next, followed by the Glendale location. Beyond these successes, Berry's zeal for assisting others hasn't waned. She recently supported two individuals in opening their own colonic clinics, helping them craft business plans and establish websites. Their ventures turned out so triumphant that they fully devoted themselves to their new businesses.
With this spirit, and being the owner of multiple successful locations, Berry decided to offer franchising for Clean Colonic. She recognizes the limitless potential of the brand to grow further. By seeking business partners to expand this concept around the country, she believes more people can benefit from the holistic wellness it offers.
Colonics have been touted by many prominent figures, such as world-renowned motivational speaker Anthony Robbins, who advocates for colon cleansing and detoxification.
Indeed, over the past year, Berry’s outreach has also extended globally. She’s traveled internationally many times to introduce the concept globally, including to Namale Resort & Spa in Fiji to provide guests cleansing colonics in tandem with wellness seminars on multiple trips.
For those experiencing gastrointestinal issues or even the merely curious, Berry advocates for the wonders of hydrotherapy. “It is life changing,” she attests.

Berry remains committed to maintaining the highest standards in her services, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and comfort for every client. Her dedication, expertise, and genuine care make Clean Colonic a trustworthy destination for those seeking to enhance their well-

Phoenix Theatre Group Delights People Living with Dementia

It’s a little magical how a small theater troupe can walk through the door and instantly transform the space around them.
That’s exactly what five talented actors do so effortlessly as part of Phoenix Theatre’s Partners That Heal program. They travel all over the Valley, using improv, music, storytelling, and movement to engage and delight audiences of every age and ability.
Recently, they visited Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus in central Phoenix. They spent time with residents at the assisted living center, members of the adult day club and preschoolers in the adjoining child center. Working in perfect harmony, they lead people who are living with dementia on a spontaneous journey that unlocks their imaginations.
“We all have that child inside of us and we let them be kids again. We give them a chance to play,” says PTH member Mike Lawler. “And we feel like we’re part of the care team.”
Marshal Glass agrees. “This light goes on inside of them and it’s just wonderful to see. Then the staff tells us the patient’s never done that before!”
The actors harness joy by sparking happy memories with familiar songs and stories.
“We come in and people who are showing no emotion or expression immediately start remembering moments,” shares Sally Jo Bannow. “Somehow, it taps into their imagination and creativity.”
“We want to get a smile on people’s faces. I get chills just thinking about it,” Kim Manning gushes. “That’s the whole reason we’re here.”
“You can tell they’re so connected and waiting for more,” adds Brian Sweis. “It’s so rewarding, and we just feel honored to be a part of that.”
Partners That Heal has visited more than 70,000 people in our community over the last decade. “They appeal to preschoolers; they appeal to someone who’s in their 70s and 80s with dementia. They meet everyone where they’re at,” says Dementia Campus Enrichment Coordinator Angela Hofler.

“Their stories might be about someone’s favorite animal, or maybe we’re all going on an African safari, and the next minute we’re waterskiing in the ocean having ice cream. They bring so much fun to us. We are lucky to have them spreading their magic and touching so many lives!”

Bikers for Boobies AZ, the renowned Arizona-based charity, has revved up its engines for the 14th year in a row to combat breast cancer. Teaming up with prominent local businesses and bands, the charity invites community members to be part of this exceptional cause.
The 14th Annual motorcycle event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14, is backed by Arizona Bike Week, J&P Cycles Scottsdale, Chuck Franklin Law, and over 20 Valley businesses.
“It is hard to believe that we have been doing this for 14 years,” says Bikers for Boobies AZ President Shelley Brorsen “It’s a great feeling knowing that together, we are raising awareness and fighting all types of cancer with the emphasis on breast

cancer. We’re hoping to raise more funding and awareness through this event.”
Kicking off at J&P Cycles, 8606 E. Shea Blvd., in Scottsdale, the day's journey will conclude with a grand parking lot party at the Dirty Dogg Saloon, 10409 N. Scottsdale Rd. Attendees can look forward to live performances from local musical talents, an array of raffle prizes, a silent auction, and delectable bites from the popular Pizza Butcher food truck.
Bikers for Boobies AZ's commendable legacy since its inception in 2009 includes providing over 1,000 women with free mammograms. Through its grants program, the charity has also distributed more than $200,000 for survival and medical grants. Furthermore, the charity has generously donated between $1,000 to $10,000 to various organizations aiding families and individuals grappling with
cancer. “We are so grateful,” says Treasurer Laura Rasmussen.
In the past, Bikers for Boobies has contributed over $250,000 to charities such as The Singletons, Casting for Recovery, Don’t be a Chump–Check for a Lump, Forth & Bubble, The Joy Bus, and many others. This year, with renewed vigor and a broader partnership with local
resources, the charity is poised to make an even bigger impact.

Tickets for the event can be secured at bikers4boobiesaz.org at $30 per individual or $40 for couples. Non-riders are equally welcome to join the festivities with a $20 donation as the entry fee. It's essential to note that the event caters exclusively to attendees aged 21 and above.

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!
matters that impact our city. On my way back home, I stop by my parents’ house in west Tempe to catch up with them. Before heading to bed, I always call my two sons to ask how their days were and to let them know I love them.
MY FAMILY IS… my everything. I visit my mother and father daily. Both of my brothers also live in Tempe. My two sons, Jevin and Jazin, both of whom are McClintock High School alums, live near me and make me proud with their many accomplishments.

HI, MY NAME IS… Berdetta Hodge.
I’VE LIVED IN TEMPE FOR NEARLY MY ENTIRE LIFE AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the city of Tempe has the strongest sense of community of any city in Arizona. Every resident is devoted to bettering Tempe and is involved in improving the city’s quality of life for all. I am happy to give my time and energy to a city that has given me so much in my lifetime.
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… starting the day nice and early by walking my dogs, Mariah, Jackson, and Bentley, through my neighborhood in Tempe. I then read the newspaper while drinking a cup of coffee. The rest of the day will be spent at the district offices for the Tempe Union High School District, where I am a governing board member, and the Tempe Municipal Building in Downtown Tempe. There, I meet with Tempe residents, business owners, and city staff to discuss
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my phone. It’s an organizer, a research tool, and last, but not least, an important apparatus for communicating with friends, family members, and residents.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Ghostbusters.” It’s a movie that reminds me of my childhood and one that always makes me laugh. You can never have a bad day after hearing Ray Parker Jr.’s theme song and watching Ivan Reitman work his cinematic magic.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a civil rights advocate. When I was a 16-year old student at Tempe High School (Go Buffaloes!), I met Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, and Maya Angelou at an event. They inspired me to make a difference in my community. They inspired me to lead the change I sought to see in the world.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “No Scrubs” by TLC. The song’s message is applicable in life’s many facets!
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… it’s a tie between my two sons, Jevin and Jazin. I speak with them every single day. I get reenergized when I hear about all the great things they are doing and the positive impacts they have on those around them.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… slipping and nearly falling off the escalator at Sky Harbor International Airport. Hey, it was 5 a.m.! Cut me some slack!
THE PERFECT DAY IS… having an opportunity to stay at home with my puppies in tow, watching movies and television shows. That’s the best way to unwind!
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… the Booker T. Washington Child Development Center in Phoenix. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest active Head Start in the area, serving low-income families who live in, and around, Downtown Phoenix.

MY LIFE IS… hectic, but a dream come true. Growing up in Tempe, I never could have imagined one day being a leader, guiding it towards a more flourishing future. Here I am now!

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… it’s a tie! My health, my two sons, and my three puppies!
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… backpacking across Europe for a few weeks. My passport is renewed and ready to go!
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… our fingerprints never fade from the lives we’ve touched.
Real Estate Tempe Skyline to Transform with Approval of 500 New Apartment Units

Artist’s rendering courtesy of Hubbard Street Group
The Tempe City Council has given the green light to two significant multifamily developments that are set to add nearly 500 new apartment units to the city's burgeoning housing market.
On September 7, in separate decisions, the council endorsed The Marshall at Tempe and Skye Tempe,
projects which are expected to deliver 189 and 281 units, respectively. Both projects underwent reviews before receiving their final approvals, reflecting the city's commitment to thoughtful urban growth.
Located at 1057 E. Apache Blvd., The Marshall, backed by New Jersey's Aptitude Development, aims to transform the existing 72-room Sleep Inn & Suites close to Arizona State University. With seven floors planned, The Marshall promises a mix of 12 onebedroom, 82 two-bedroom, 15 three-bedroom, and 59 four-bedroom apartments. In addition, residents and visitors can look forward to 1,800 square feet of retail space at street level. This development was given the nod unanimously by the council.
However, it was the Skye Tempe project that generated considerable discussion. Slated to rise to a lofty 27 stories at 780 S. Myrtle Ave., this development by Chicago's Hubbard Street Group will rank amongst Tempe's tallest structures once completed. To provide a comparison, the current tallest edifice in the city, West 6th Street Apartments, comprises two towers with heights of 22 and 30 stories.
Despite its architectural promise, Skye Tempe faced challenges in its approval process. Concerns regarding the building's height, parking provisions in such a densely packed area, and the logistics of pick-up and drop-off zones for rideshare and delivery users resulted in a narrow 4-3 approval vote.
Skye Tempe's residential offering is set to consist of 51 studio apartments, 170 one-bedroom units, 59 two-bedroom residences, and a singular three-bedroom unit. Boosting its appeal as a mixed-use project, the development will feature a sizeable 6,650 square-foot commercial space, envisioned to house an on-site retail "market."
Both projects share a common thread in their representation, with land-use attorney Nick Wood of Snell & Wilmer guiding them through the city's approval process.
The approvals signify a confident stride in Tempe's urban development journey, promising residents an infusion of housing options and reaffirming the city's position as a rising star in Arizona's real estate sector.
New Lease Agreement with Local Boys and Girls Club Approved
The Chandler City Council recently approved an amended lease agreement with the Chandler Compadres Branch of the Boys and Girls Club of the Valley, a city facility located at 300 E. Chandler Blvd.
With this amended 10-year lease agreement, the three partners — city of Chandler, Chandler Compadres, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Valley — are ready for the facility’s next steps, which include a major renovation of the building and programming space to create a flagship site to address needs in the community.
The city has provided Human Services funding to the Boys and Girls Club for the past 28 years. The buildings were originally purchased by the city in 1995 and leased to the club in order to provide
youth ages 5 to 18 with a variety of services. Then in late 2009, the buildings were demolished to construct a new facility using a 2007 bond allocation of $8.5 million.
It’s now time for another investment in the facility to continue providing quality services to Chandler youth. The city has budgeted approximately $1.3 million toward renovations this fiscal year that will include a state-of-the-art teen center, a new front lobby and conference room with enhanced safety features, and a new game room. In addition, the nonprofit Chandler Compadres has donated $1 million towards much needed afterschool transportation services for youth.
As part of this amended lease agreement, the city will have priority access to the premises, including the gymnasium and
athletic fields during non-business hours when not in use by the Boys and Girls Club. This expands the city’s ability to serve additional youth and provide more recreational uses in the surrounding area.
In addition, the Boys and Girls Club will continue to provide outreach and marketing to promote their programs to Chandler residents, students, and the youth of those working within the city limits. The focus of these outreach efforts will be the community in need, residents from the Galveston neighborhood, Title I schools, and Chandler’s public housing residents. The club’s staff also will be required to participate in events and initiatives impacting the surrounding community, such as back-to-school and holiday drives.
Additional measures as part of the lease agreement include targeting
low-income residents and providing financial assistance as needed as funds are available; serving Chandler’s public housing residents at no cost; providing members with access to snacks and meals; preparing annual reports highlighting the impact; and conducting annuals surveys of members and parents.
Since late 2009, the city has provided maintenance and custodial services and covered utility costs as part of the lease agreement that was set to expire in 2029. This new lease will continue through July 2033, with an option for an additional 10-year extension.
This decades-long partnership continues to bring together public and private resources to provide engaging and impactful opportunities for Chandler youth and families.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony BealIN THEATERS
The third installment in this series once again delivers what fans expect: Denzel Washington brutalizing bad guys in unique and gory ways. This time around, director Antoine Fuqua infuses the action scenes with a horror-like atmosphere, showing McCall stalking his prey from the shadows and using distorted angles, thanks to the work of DP Robert Richardson. This approach helps the film stand out from its predecessors, even though it sometimes reverts to a more conventional style in certain scenes and exhibits pacing issues reminiscent of earlier installments. Intriguingly, the film also delves into the deeper aspects of McCall's character, questioning if he can ever find true peace and whether there's more to his life than violence. These reflective moments create a striking contrast to the film's brutal scenes. This is arguably the best installment of the series, and it could serve as a fitting conclusion.

A group of girls start a fight club to try to get with their crushes.
“Bottoms” is a true-blue contender for the title of most anarchic movie of the year, given the reality it presents. Every character and scenario is exaggerated to the max, and it’s an absolute blast to watch everyone adopt the most extreme approaches to everything, from singing to fighting. The superb cast sells it all, from leads Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri to even the minor background characters. Emma Seligman's direction is simpler compared to her debut, "Shiva Baby," but it complements the tone of the film. The visuals and tropes of a typical comedy (paired with a familiar soundtrack) contrast sharply with the Mad Max-esque actions on screen. It's a truly unique and entertaining piece.

“The Equalizer 3”
Robert McCall finds himself defending a small Italian town from the mafia.
“Miguel

Wants to Fight”
A young man wants to get in a fight before his life goes through a major change.
Short and sweet aptly describes Oz Rodriguez's new movie. At its core, the film presents a moral tale about the perils of succumbing to peer pressure and allowing fiction to shape one's worldview. Rodriguez adeptly navigates the young cast through two contrasting styles: reality and imagination, which feel like distinct films yet seamlessly blend together. This is not to undermine the cast's contribution; they certainly hold their own, delivering heartfelt
“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

Two BFFs find their friendship tested against the dangers of middle school drama.
A more traditional comedy, this film isn't particularly memorable, but it's not bad either. Sunny and Sadie Sandler are the clear standouts of the movie. The latter's deadpan delivery and the former's exaggerated humor truly make them shine. The film's primary drawback is its repetitiveness, often recycling the same beats to pad its runtime. Its structure is peculiar, seemingly introducing specific plot points either too early or too late. While I appreciate its attempts at originality and its refreshing depiction of Judaism compared to other
