CHANDLER STREAMLINES HISTORIC PRESERVATION WITH REVISED ORDINANCE
Chandler City Council has updated its historic preservation ordinance, making it easier for communities to protect their architectural heritage. The new amendments lower the required percentage of consenting property owners for creating preservation districts from 90% to 60%, allowing residents to more easily reach the necessary threshold for district or landmark designation. Property owners can opt out if they prefer not to participate.
Additionally, the council increased the annual cap on commissioner appointments from two to five, ensuring a quorum for the seven-member commission. The amendments also introduce an option to document public support for Conservation Districts.
The council established general design guidelines for all historic preservation districts and landmarks, informed by the Secretary of the Interior’s standards, staff ideas, and best practices from other municipalities. Focusing on exterior preservation, these user-friendly guidelines aim to retain the authentic character of historic sites.
Since adopting its historic preservation ordinance in late 2020, Chandler designated Southside Village as its first Historic Conservation District. For more information, residents can contact Assistant Historic Preservation Officer Harley Mehlhorn at 480-782-3054.

TEMPE MAYOR HOSTS EVENT TO TACKLE ELDER ABUSE
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods will host the 2nd Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 10 at Friendship Village in Tempe. The free event aims to address the alarming issue of elder abuse and financial exploitation, which affects over five million Americans annually.

Reports of elder abuse to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office have risen by 150% in the past decade. Older adults are vulnerable due to isolation and dependence on others. Predators strip their victims of their rights, isolate them, and medicate them against their wishes. Shockingly, only one in 44 incidents is reported, resulting in estimated losses ranging from $36 billion to $3.5 trillion per year.
The event will bring together aging industry experts, community leaders, and business professionals. They will share valuable insights and guidance on protecting loved ones from becoming victims of this “silent crime.” Tempe resident Linda Arters, a national elder justice advocate, is coordinating the event. The focus is on residents aged 50 and older, as well as future caregivers.
Limited seating is available, so registration is required. Interested individuals can register online at tempe.gov/ agefriendly or contact Linda Arters at 602-677-3533 or artersgroup@gmail.com.

New Public-Private Partnership Brings Improvements, Operations Change to Ken McDonald Golf Course
Photo courtesy of city of Tempe
A MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS TRANSITION, ALONG WITH PLANNED CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS, WILL SOON BE COMING TO KEN MCDONALD GOLF COURSE THANKS TO A NEW PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP WITH COURSECO.
Starting July 1, CourseCo will be responsible for the operations and maintenance of the golf course, pro shop, and clubhouse. On May 18, Tempe City Council voted to approve the lease agreement for the cityowned course.
The firm will share revenues with the city including a $50,000 annual rent payment and a portion of golf, food, and beverage revenues. The anticipated payments to the city over the initial 20-year lease term are $10.3 million.
“Ken McDonald is a beloved course for many in the Tempe community, and we look forward to continuing that legacy with this new partnership,” says Tempe Community Services Director Craig Hayton. “CourseCo has extensive experience in managing public golf courses and we’re excited to see what they bring to the course for both golfers and non-golfers of all ages.”
Ken McDonald is located at 800 E. Divot Dr., off Rural Road between Guadalupe and Elliott roads.
The agreement outlines two future improvements to the property. The city will fund a new irrigation system up to a maximum amount with CourseCo responsible for excess costs. CourseCo and the city will each contribute 50% toward clubhouse renovations, up to a maximum amount for the city’s contribution. CourseCo will also be responsible for other future capital improvement projects and contribute a percentage of annual golf revenues into a dedicated capital improvement account.
The city will not be responsible for operations, maintenance, or additional improvements except for improvements outlined above during the lease term. CourseCo does not currently propose any changes to the course footprint.
CourseCo will continue to honor Golf Tempe LoyalTee Cards through the end of 2023 and will maintain current rates through June 2024. Starting in July 2024, Tempe resident and association rates will be capped at a $2 per year increase.
Founded in 1989, CourseCo currently manages the operations of more than 40 golf courses throughout the Southwest, the majority of which are municipal courses. Ken McDonald would be its first course in Arizona.
“We are extremely excited to partner with the city of
Tempe for the lease and operation of the historic Ken McDonald Golf Course,” says CourseCo President and CEO Michael Sharp. “We look forward to investing in infrastructure and expanding programming all while focusing on providing the best possible golf course conditions and hospitality to Tempe residents and visitors alike. The future is bright for Ken McDonald with many new and exciting things to come and we feel privileged to be a part of Ken McDonald and the city of Tempe.”
The customer facing operations at Tempe’s two golf courses have been privately managed through vetted vendors for many years. The new partnership represents the first-time maintenance and capital improvements would also be privately managed. The course will remain under city ownership.

Old Mill Avenue Bridge to Shine Brighter with LED Upgrade in Ongoing Refresh Tempe Initiative

Photo courtesy of city of Tempe
IN A MOVE THAT BLENDS SUSTAINABILITY WITH AESTHETICS, THE CITY OF TEMPE IS LAUNCHING A LIGHTING OVERHAUL FOR THE BELOVED MILL AVENUE BRIDGES. As part of the ongoing Refresh Tempe initiative, the existing lights on both bridges will be replaced with energyefficient LED bulbs. This project is set to be complete by the end of June, marking another milestone in the city’s steadfast commitment to enhancing the community’s infrastructure and quality of life.
Residents and visitors should note that there will be lane restrictions during working hours as the upgrade takes place. These minor inconveniences will pave the way for a brighter and more energy-conscious future for Tempe’s iconic bridges.
The lighting makeover forms part of a much larger canvas of development and beautification projects across the city under the Refresh Tempe initiative. This comprehensive plan aims to rejuvenate Tempe’s infrastructure and amenities, with projects scattered throughout the entire city.
Several Downtown Tempe projects are already in progress, heralding a vibrant and visually stunning season for the area. Local artist Kyllan Maney has added a new art installation to the west Sixth Street roundabout, introduced during
the recent Tempe Festival of the Arts. Additionally, a fresh mural by Jayarr Steiner now adorns the intersection at Seventh Street and College Avenue.
The city’s commitment to beautifying public spaces continues with rightof-way landscaping upgrades along Mill Avenue, from Fourth Street to Rio Salado Parkway. This initiative includes the addition of new granite, shrubs, and trees, along with raised planters scattered in various locations.
Art and illumination will continue to merge with the introduction of intersection murals by local artists and the installation of festoon lighting along Fourth and Sixth streets near Mill Avenue. The charming crisscross of lights is underway and will bring a warm and inviting atmosphere to the heart of the city.
Other significant projects as part of the Refresh Tempe initiative include the Fifth Street - Farmer to College Streetscape and the Mill Avenue - Rio Salado Parkway to University Drive Streetscape, further showcasing the city’s commitment to its continual growth and community development.
Through these innovative projects, Tempe is lighting the way toward a brighter, more sustainable future, exemplifying how a city can maintain its charm while modernizing its infrastructure for the benefit of its residents and visitors.
For best results, it is suggested to have two sessions, two days in a row.

Community Flute Group Connects with Tempe Seniors
Flute EnsembleCentral Arizona Flute Ensemble (CAFE) facilitated a nine-month music residency program with Desert Marigold Senior Living (DM) as part of a Wavemaker Grant funded by
the city of Tempe. The seven flutists implemented a shared community experience, intellectual engagement, and emotional connection for those living in independent, assisted living, and memory care portions of the campus.

The interactive concert formats included
educational performances, singalongs, duet presentations, and a lecture/ demonstration about flutes around the world. Each month, seniors were actively engaged with the music, with each other, and with CAFE musicians. If it was their birthday month, CAFE announced their names, hand-delivered personalized birthday cards while they sat in the audience, then played the happy birthday song for them. DM provided cake and beverages so the flutists could chat after the concert and enjoy the birthday celebrations with the residents.
DM Activity Director Dawn Dunn-Rice says, “Of all the arts, I prefer bringing music to this community because it is associated with movement, emotions, and memories. It can fire multiple parts of the brain at once, so music is great for brain and body health. This project was special because it afforded the community access to a collective experience with quality songs selected just for them. We just love CAFE flutists!”
Playing instruments that range from the
traditional piccolo to the rare 10-footlong contrabass flute, CAFE performs a wide range of musical styles: oldies, classical, pop, folk, patriotic, seasonal favorites, and show tunes. Since forming in 2014, they have performed at the Mesa Art Center, Desert Botanical Garden, libraries, concert halls, and Tempe History Museum.
According to one resident: “I never know what you’ll play for us, but I don’t want to miss it! Your music brings back so many memories and always makes me smile. Thank you!”
CAFE Manager Leslie Etzel says, “We are thrilled that the city of Tempe supported this project because music is such a powerful tool for connecting with others, healing, and improving one’s mood. That goes for the flutists, too!”
Desert Marigold Senior Living is located at 6150 S. Rural Rd.

Education AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan Helps Bring Dreams to Life with Creative Photo Contest
Summer “Picture-Perfect Career” photo contest offers Arizona students the opportunity to win $529 towards education and career goals.
AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office are inviting kindergarten through 12th grade students across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the “My Picture-Perfect Career” photo contest.

Summer vacation is an ideal time for families to talk with children about what they’d like to be when they grow up and explore potential career interests with trips to Arizona libraries, museums, and other local handson learning resources. Taking and sharing pictures while discussing job aspirations is the goal of this summer’s “My Picture-Perfect Career” Photo Contest, which is open to students through 12th grade across Arizona.
Students are encouraged to take or pose for a photo representing themselves in their dream job. They can take a selfie, pose for a picture, invite friends and family into the shot or come up with their own creative ideas. The final photo just needs to visually communicate their vision of a dream job – whether the participant is in front of or behind the camera! A total of 10 winners will be selected across the state and receive $529 towards opening a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from across Arizona’s 15 counties.
The goal of the photo contest is to increase awareness of the AZ529 Plan and pave a path for another generation of students to achieve their postsecondary dreams through proper savings. Winners will be honored by Treasurer Kimberly Yee during a special ceremony at the state capitol in September. Be advised that by submitting photos to this contest, you acknowledge and agree that the photo may be publicly displayed.
In total, $5,290 will be distributed to 10 students to assist in saving for their educational plans beyond high school. Parents or guardians of the winners will be responsible for setting up an AZ529 account if an account does not already exist. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school, and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.
For more information about AZ529, visit az529.gov. For complete contest details and rules, visit az529.gov/photocontest.

RAISIN' THE ROOF WITH SCIENCE!

Unleash your inner scientist and make raisins dance in this fun, fizzy kitchen chemistry experiment!
Want a reason to play with your food? While adults may discourage us from doing so, food items can teach us a lot about science, especially chemistry. And it can be fun too! In this activity, you’ll learn about how vinegar and baking soda create a reaction and form carbon dioxide bubbles. When a raisin joins the (dance) party, the bubbles that are formed stick to the raisins and their many wrinkles, causing them to float to the top. When the raisins reach the top, bubbles tend to pop and release the gas which, in turn, allows the raisins to sink back down to the bottom.
Supplies
• 1 clear plastic cup
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 to 7 raisins
• Water
• Vinegar Challenge
• Fill you cup about halfway with water
• Add one teaspoon of baking soda and stir until dissolved in water
• Add 6 to 7 raisins into the cup
• Very slowly pour in vinegar until cup is three-fourths full
• Watch the raisins dance
What did you think would happen to the raisins? Did they surprise you? What happened? What do you think is causing the bubble to form? What type of gas is it? You can try this experiment with other small fruits–how do you think the reaction would

be different if you used grapes? Or a blueberry. What about a cherry tomato?
There are lots of different ways to learn about science in your very own home. Science is all around us, and as long as you ask and have supervision, it is great to be curious about what other experiments you can conduct. Visit azscience.org and find experiments just like this!

The “turf monster” may be the first thing that comes to mind when a player gets tripped up on the field, but it’s also the name behind the Valley’s award-winning artificial turf installation and landscaping company.
Turf Monsters, says owner Mike Freeland, “provides highquality landscaping using the best materials and installation at a competitive price.”
Opened in 2017, Turf Monsters offers more than artificial grass. It also provides custom putting greens, full-service landscaping, landscape lighting, trees and plants, pavers and patios, pergolas, and firepits and grills.
DON’T TRIP ON THE COST
Freeland says that because the company buys all its products in bulk, it can pass the savings on to customers.
“We’re still coming in competitively priced compared to some of our competitors who install low-quality products,” he says.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are also a factor in Turf Monsters’ success.
“Friends and family want to know if someone had a good experience,” says Freeland. “A lot of our business comes from customers’ neighbors and relatives.”
More proof of Turf Monsters’ work is in the more than 350 five-star Google reviews about its quality work, dependability, and trusted team.
“We get people’s yards done right the first time,” Freeland says. “You never have to worry about who is working on your yard, and we stick to our deadlines.”
Turf Monsters is also an artificial turf wholesaler. “It’s not always easy to find the right synthetic turf to make your outdoor space vision come to life,” explains Freeland.
Additionally, Freeland says Turf Monsters has a good relationship with its distributors, which helps get more products for the money and discounted prices. He says the strong relationship with distributors also leads to a more efficient, cost-effective, and productive supply chain.
“We didn’t have any product shortages during the pandemic.”
WANT TO KICK SOME GRASS?
Freeland says Turf Monsters’ artificial turf options feature a mix of olive green and field green turf fibers for artificial turf, putting greens, and pet-friendly turf. “It looks as real as it feels,” he says.
Artificial turf
Installation specialists help customers design their yards to fit their lifestyles and activities.

Putting green turf
Freeland says only the highest-grade putting turf available is used in their installs. “The synthetic fiber turf we use is durable, low-maintenance, and scuff-resistant,” he says.

Turf Monsters also customizes putting greens for small yard corners to entire areas. “Our professional installers help create a putting space for customers’ needs and budget,” Freeland says.
Arizonans who want to practice golf on the hottest summer days can even work with Turf Monsters to create an indoor putting green.
Pet-friendly turf
For customers with pets, Turf Monsters offers pet-friendly turf designed with materials that are non-toxic, soft to the touch, and heat-resistant.
FROM LIGHTING TO COMPLETE LANDSCAPING
Landscape specialists work with customers to design comfortable and attractive lighting that will add aesthetics, curb appeal, and safety to outdoor spaces.
“Landscape lighting lets you use your outdoor space long after the sun goes down,” says Freeland.”
Besides artificial turf installation and maintenance, Turf Monsters offers tree and plant installation, maintenance, and landscape edging and trimming. Turf Monsters also offers water-saving irrigation services and custom-built fire pits and grills.
“We know the Arizona landscape can be harsh for trees and plants, so we help create a custom landscape design that is attractive and will thrive in the desert,” says Freeland. “But when you are looking for a low-maintenance design, paver installation is the way to go.”
He says pergolas are also easy to care for and extend the outdoor living space.
Much of Turf Monsters’ products, including TigerTurf, the highest-quality synthetic grass, are made in America. Its custom fire pits and grills are also built with 100% American-made products.
“We offer turf installation and landscaping services Valleywide,” says Freeland, adding that customers can call to schedule a free estimate.

Real Estate Maricopa County Provides $7.3 Million to Tempe for Purchase of Motel to House Homeless
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has taken a significant step towards addressing homelessness by approving an agreement to allocate $7.3 million to the city of Tempe. This funding will be utilized to expand shelter options for individuals experiencing homelessness in the area.

As part of the agreement, Maricopa County will provide $7.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to acquire and rehabilitate a motel located in Tempe. To further enhance the project, Tempe will contribute an additional $3 million, resulting in a total investment of over $10 million. The renovated motel will offer up to 60 units of shelter, providing essential bridge housing to help people transition out of homelessness. At any given time, approximately 120 individuals experiencing homelessness will find residence at this facility.
Chairman Clint Hickman, District 4, says, “This collaborative project with the city of Tempe is another important step towards addressing homelessness in our community. With the purchase of this motel, we can provide shelter and support to those in need and help them find a sustainable plan to end their homelessness.”
The shelter will be designed to accommodate various populations, including singles, couples, seniors, families with children, and individuals with disabilities. Moreover, the facility will be pet-friendly, allowing individuals to keep their beloved animal companions with them during their stay.
Supervisor Jack Sellers, District 1, emphasizes the significance of working together to tackle the multifaceted issue of homelessness, saying, “Homelessness is a complex issue that requires a coordinated effort to address. By pooling our resources and working together, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of those experiencing homelessness. I am grateful for this collaboration with the city of Tempe and Mayor Woods to expand the region’s shelter capacity and support services for people experiencing homelessness.”
In addition to providing a safe and secure place to sleep, the housing complex will offer comprehensive case management services. The city of Tempe’s Community Health and Human Services department will facilitate connections to city and community resources, including employment opportunities through the Tempe Works jobs program. Additionally, the department will assist with longer-term shelter and housing options to improve housing stability.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods says, “We are grateful to Maricopa County for their leadership and partnership and this new opportunity to expand our comprehensive response to homelessness. Through new investments, strategies, and partnerships, we are making progress in elevating the continued health, safety, and quality of life of our entire community.”
The city of Tempe will manage the facility as a homeless shelter for the next decade. However, after the
10-year period, the city will have the option to convert the site to an alternative use, such as the development of affordable housing.
This investment in addressing homelessness is one of several initiatives announced by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in recent weeks. The board has collaborated with cities including Avondale, Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Surprise, as well as the Human Services Campus and St. Vincent de Paul, contributing over $30 million to provide solutions to the regional issue of homelessness.
The collaboration between Maricopa County and the city of Tempe highlights the importance of joining forces to combat homelessness effectively. By pooling resources, expertise, and compassion, these communities are working towards creating a brighter future for individuals experiencing homelessness in the region. TEMPE MAKER DISTRICT: The Revitalization Engine Boosting Local Economy and Community Development
The Tempe Maker District has undergone a significant transformation, with its influence impacting local businesses and the city at large. Encompassing over 600 acres, this industrious terrain is burgeoning with a diverse range of creative companies, offering everything from orange juice to custom-made doors.

In an effort to revitalize this area, the city of Tempe has launched an enhanced initiative to attract a more integrated industry base to this location. These efforts have paid off, and the area’s formerly high vacancy rate for industrial property has diminished, as new businesses have moved in, reducing the vacancy rate to a lower level.
Inspired by the vision of the city officials, the Tempe Maker District is gradually transforming into a ‘makerhood,’ a vibrant ecosystem comprising creative businesses, residential units, manufacturers, and artists’ studios. Companies have migrated here, filling up vacant buildings and fostering a lively neighborhood.
One notable success story comes from Laura Briscoe, who relocated her rapidly growing granola-making operation, Laura’s Gourmet Granola, to this district. This move has not only accommodated her business expansion but has also led to symbiotic business relationships with other local enterprises.
Part of the allure of the district stems from Tempe’s 2018 initiative to create several innovation hubs to spur job growth, private investment, and new mixed-use development. The city council’s decision to allow for greater density and mixed-use developments in the Maker District has stimulated urban rejuvenation, transforming the district into an attractive, destination hub where people can live, work, and play.
Among the new developments is Phoenix-based Evergreen Devco Inc.’s
324-unit apartment complex, adding a residential dynamic to the area. Moreover, companies such as Lucid Group Inc., and Arizona Custom Blends have taken up residence, repurposing old buildings to suit their business needs.
United Dairymen of Arizona, a longtime resident of the district, recently expanded its operations, showcasing its commitment to the area’s growth. The district’s renewal has been further amplified by the introduction of Opportunity Zones, offering tax incentives to developers, which has attracted investments from firms such as Capital Hall Partners.
However, the Tempe Maker District is more than just a business hub; it is increasingly becoming a community anchor. The Bouldering Project, a gym focusing on rock climbing, yoga, and fitness, has chosen the district for its new location, bringing with it a distinct community-focused vibe.
All these factors culminate to illustrate the vibrancy of the Tempe Maker District. The area is more than a hub for innovative companies; it’s a thriving community that’s championing local business growth, fostering relationships, and bringing a sense of unity to Tempe. The city’s sup-
portive attitude towards small businesses combined with the inherent creativity and diversity of the district creates a unique atmosphere, proving that there’s much to be admired about the area’s handcrafting, artistry, and creativity.
As the district continues to grow and attract more companies, retailers and residents, the city of Tempe stands to reap significant benefits from this revitalization effort. In the years to come, the Tempe Maker District promises to continue to stand as a testament to the power of community and creativity in urban development.
Neighbors Hello Neighbor!
designing kitchen cabinet layouts for their communities or custom-built homes, and usually pitching in to help unload a semitruck full of cabinets at the warehouse. When I have my Weeks & Mitchell hat on, I’m helping coordinate the remodel process with my management staff from our Chandler showroom and visiting with vendors about the newest trends in the industry. When the work day ends, the after-school activities begin. I always find myself on a baseball diamond somewhere either watching the boys play a game or participating in a practice.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a radio DJ, as my dad spent 40 years in that industry, and he got to travel the world and meet artists. I always thought he had a dream job.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… I don’t sing!
HI, MY NAME IS… Kevin Mitchell.
I’VE LIVED IN AHWATUKEE FOR 33 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the small-town community feel in one of the largest cities of America.
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… well, there is no typical day in my life, as I own two businesses (Weeks & Mitchell Home Remodeling and DSI Builder Supply) and every day is very different. The mornings consist of waking up early to go for a hike with my wife. We are fortunate enough to be able to walk right out our backyard and be on the mountain trails. When we return, we grab a cup of coffee, get our two boys going for their day, and send them on their way to school by 8 a.m. Then the madness begins. When I’m wearing my DSI hat, I’m meeting with builders about their cabinet needs,
MY FAMILY IS… my amazing wife, Holly. She really holds the whole thing together for us. Holly works with me at Weeks & Mitchell and DSI doing the books and the miscellaneous tasks that are required to make the businesses successful. We have two boys, Brady (15) and Cayden (13). They both love baseball and they play the game at a very high level.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… vacation! My family and I do vacation right. We go somewhere new every time we go on vacation. In fact, every summer we visit a different MLB baseball park, allowing us to explore new cities while taking in a baseball game.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “The Family Man.” Nicholas Cage’s character makes a seemingly small decision that changes the trajectory of his life. I love that the movie depicts that every choice we make, good or bad, has a consequence.
THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME ARE… my boys! When I see how hard they work at school and in their sports activities, it makes me want to continue to work hard for them. I know that I am a role model for them and when they see me work hard, they’ll continue to work hard too. If I let up on my goals, then they might let up on theirs.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my brother
played a joke on our dad where he fake sneezed on the back of my dad’s neck. However, my brother squirted a spray bottle of water on the back of his neck instead. Our dad thought my brother sneezed all over him and my dad got so mad––it was funny! The prank was actually captured on video by our mother, so we all get to experience the funny moment over and over.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… 75 degree weather, full of sunshine, and relaxing with my family on vacation somewhere.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Boys Team Charity. This is a volunteer program that my sons participate in where they volunteer their time to Feed My Starving Children, The Miracle League, and pack lunches and clothes for the homeless, etc.
MY LIFE IS… better than I could have imagined. I have a beautiful family; we are all healthy. We are so blessed!

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my children, hands down. I know that being a father is a privilege and I never take that for granted.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Switzerland. My wife and I are planning a getaway in a few years and because I know it is in the works, it’s definitely my dream vacation.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Don’t dwell on the past. Dream big about the future and be present in the moment.”

Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing Offer Resources, Support for Seniors with Hearing Loss

Most of us know someone who has hearing loss. Some of you may be experiencing hearing loss yourself. Oftentimes people dismiss signs of hearing loss as “no big deal.” In reality, hearing loss is a very big deal. Hearing loss can impact all the areas of your life, including relationships, health, and safety. It can also be linked to depression and memory loss, an early indicator of dementia.
While the likelihood of developing dementia exists, there are ways to prevent hearing loss: • Protect your ears. Keep music or TV volumes low, especially when you are wearing headphones. If you have headphones on and someone else can hear your music, the volume is too high.
• Don’t ignore your hearing loss. If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, see a hearing healthcare professional right away to start combating the symptoms.
• Tackle the hearing loss head on. Don’t assume hearing loss will go away on its own. It won’t. The sooner you get assistance with your hearing loss, the more likely you are to possibly prevent early dementia.
• Utilize technology. If you have a hearing aid, wear it as much as possible. You can also consider other hearing interventions including cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, amplified telephones, or captioning.

ACCESS TO RESOURCES
As you begin to age, access to valuable resources is critically important. However, an Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) survey found that older adults report that they are concerned with where to find these resources. Survey respondents indicated that they need information on general health and wellness as well as information on memory loss and dementia, pharmacy benefits, and access to mental health services. Other important resources mentioned included assistance with maintaining their

As such, ACDHH is launching its Age of Access initiative designed to be a one-stop destination for resources, information, and programming for Arizona’s older adults who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss. An online survey is in the field right now to gain additional information regarding the needs of the community and how best to provide access to these resources. Take it here: https://bit.ly/acdhhsenior.
Respondents that participated in preliminary research conducted by Gallaudet University indicated that there is a lack of access to home health care aides (caregivers) that can sign or have awareness about deaf people’s needs. Therefore, in the fall of 2023, ACDHH, in partnership with the university, will conduct focus groups on this as well.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony BealIN THEATERS
“Evil Dead Rise”
A small family is trapped in their apartment building when a demonic force is unleashed with the ability to possess.
While the “Evil Dead” series may not be a regular topic of conversation among the general public, its deep roots in the horror genre and accessibility for newcomers make it truly special. “Rise” continues this legacy, embracing the more serious tone of the original film and the 2013 iteration, while maintaining the distinctive excess of content and action that sets the series apart. This is a hard-hitting piece that conveys the pain and terror of its characters in a way that will make you cringe. Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan deliver stunning performances as sisters, with Sutherland’s compelling portrayal of a possessed character and Sullivan’s heroic essence reminiscent of Ash and Mia, while also bringing motherhood themes into focus. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat, holding nothing back, which is a major plus. It stands as a worthy addition to one of the greatest horror series of all time.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”

The Guardians must face their greatest enemy yet to save one of their own.
James Gunn is a constant reminder of the creative possibilities inherent in the comic book film genre. Despite certain shortcomings, the third installment of his Guardians saga is among his most compelling work to date. Gunn escalates the level of intense action and mature content in a way that complements the overall narrative and tone, while still harmonizing with the previous films. It’s the empathetic core of the story that keeps us invested, as the cast subtly conveys their characters’ growth through nuanced changes in their movements and vocal inflections. Importantly, the film remains clear about its identity and effectively concludes the overarching themes of the trilogy. It’s a truly remarkable piece.
“Hypnotic”
A detective uncovers a supernatural element in the search for his daughter.
“Hypnotic” is a film that, despite having ample talent both on-screen and behind the scenes, struggles to achieve its ultimate, yet confused, objective. Director Robert Rodriguez, known for infusing style and charisma into his low-budget projects, seems to fall short here, with the film’s low-cost aesthetic lacking the charm of his previous works. The cast, including

usually impressive actors like Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, appear disengaged or unenthusiastic about the story, though William Fitchner gives a notably overthe-top performance. The film aims for complexity in its structure but ends up being more incoherent and confusing, and its attempts to draw parallels with filmmaking feel underdeveloped. There’s a glimmer of an intriguing concept in the third act, but it’s undermined by a hurried conclusion. Overall, it’s an unfortunate squandering of potential and talent.

By now, fans know what to expect from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and “Fast X” delivers the anticipated thrills, albeit in a somewhat overstuffed package. The consistently strong performers (Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang) maintain their high standards, while others (Ludacris, Gibson) have yet to master their craft, even after two decades. The film’s abrupt shifts between narratives, some of which appear only briefly before a lengthy absence, may disrupt its flow. Nevertheless, the film’s charisma and action sequences help propel it forward. In terms of the latter, Louis Leterrier masterfully orchestrates some of the series’ most audacious stunts, managing to balance fight scenes, varied vehicle chases, and shootouts to prevent repetition during the film’s extensive run time of nearly two and a half hours. The editing truly shines in these moments, producing a solid action film that should
