American Investment in Semiconductor Manufacturing Spotlights Intel in Chandler

THE MARCH ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN THAT THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND INTEL CORPORATION HAVE REACHED TERMS ON $8.5 BILLION IN DIRECT FUNDING UNDER THE CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT SPOTLIGHTS EFFORTS TO ESTABLISH AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING.

Intel has invested billions in its manufacturing facilities in Chandler. Current investments are building two factories and modernizing an existing fab to produce leading-edge logic chips in Chandler. These chips are essential to the world’s most advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, which will help ensure more of these chips are made domestically.

“The announcement builds upon Intel’s capabilities, expanding innovation, opportunity, and high-quality jobs in our community,” says Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. “These investments have spawned a unique

ecosystem of semiconductor industry manufacturing, suppliers and innovators in Chandler.”

High-tech manufacturing spans more than 300 companies, employing nearly 28,000 workers in Chandler. The manufacturing industry represents 20% of all jobs in Chandler, the highest percentage among the largest 10 cities in the Valley.

Intel and Chandler have a relationship spanning 45 years that supports the most complex manufacturing processes in the world. Infrastructure improvements, water, and wastewater treatment, building development processes, economic and workforce development and public safety are some of the specific services involved in supporting the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry has recognized Chandler as the Best City for Business in

Arizona. The business-friendly tax climate, regulatory policies, and reliable infrastructure make it easy and attractive for companies to locate and expand. Chandler also has the lowest combined taxes, utility rates, and costs for services among Valley cities.

An educated population is one of the greatest strengths to attract quality jobs and build a semiconductor talent pipeline to serve Chandler industries. Workforce development illustrates the power of this collaboration and innovation by engaging the business community, higher education and tech platforms that connect people with training and jobs.

The announcement of CHIPS and Science Act funding for Intel supports continued investment in Chandler and furthers the country’s economic and national security interests in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.

AAWL Adoption Center Shines Anew After Renovation

Photos courtesy of Arizona Animal Welfare League

THE ARIZONA ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE (AAWL) PROUDLY ANNOUNCED

THE REOPENING OF ITS CHANDLER ADOPTION CENTER LAST MONTH, FOLLOWING A SIGNIFICANT $105,000 RENOVATION. Located within Chandler Fashion Center, 3111 W. Chandler Blvd., the refreshed facility now boasts brand-new kennels and a vibrant update

featuring AAWL’s new logo and brand colors, marking a bright new chapter in the center’s history of helping animals find their forever homes.

Since its inception in 2012, replacing a former puppy mill store, the Chandler Adoption Center has been a haven for over 13,000 animals across the Valley, serving as a pivotal force in animal rescue and adoption.

“We are so fortunate to have received a $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities that inspired hundreds of other animals lovers across Phoenix to make generous donations to close the funding gap and make this latest renovation to the Chandler center possible,” says Alessandra Navidad, president & CEO. “With the support and generosity of our community, we can continue to offer a safe, comfortable environment for animals in need while they await their forever home.”

The makeover of the Chandler Adoption Center is not just a facelift but a renewal of AAWL’s commitment to providing a safe and welcoming space for animals. This mission began over a decade ago with the goal of rescuing vulnerable

animals and challenging stereotypes about shelter pets. Today, the center stands as the largest mall-based adoption facility in the Valley, with nearly half of its rescued animals arriving through partnerships with rural rescue organizations.

Before the renovation, the facility's aging kennels, some over two decades old, were in dire need of replacement. The upgrade to new condos and kennels not only enhances the comfort and sanitation for the animals but also aligns the space with AAWL’s recent rebranding efforts.

In line with its ongoing mission to rescue,

rehabilitate, and re-home animals, AAWL has introduced new initiatives, including the appointment of a full-time adoption support coordinator. This role is dedicated to supporting adopters during the crucial first four months postadoption and beyond, aiming to ensure a smooth transition for pets into their new homes and reduce the likelihood of pets being returned.

LIGHT LANE ILLUMINATES DOWNTOWN TEMPE WITH A FUSION OF BIKING, MUSIC, AND VISUAL ART

Photo courtesy of city of Tempe

The streets of downtown Tempe will come alive this month in a spectacle of light and sound with the debut of Light Lane, a unique art installation that marries the joy of biking with the vibrancy of local music and visual art. Presented by the city of Tempe Public Art program, in collaboration with LeMonde Studios, this innovative project is set to transform Mill Avenue into an interactive canvas from April 3 to April 30.

Light Lane consists of nine stationary bicycles. When pedaled, they illuminate the surroundings with artist-designed imagery and immerses cyclists in the distinctive sounds of Tempe's local music scene. This engaging installation not only highlights the talents of local artists and musicians but also invites the community and visitors alike to play an active role in the art-making process.

The installation will be dispersed across three strategic locations in downtown Tempe: Center Pointe Plaza, the Mill Avenue U.S. Post Office, and an area

just north of the historic Andre Building on Fourth Street and Mill Avenue. These sets of three bikes will be accessible to the public free of charge, 24 hours a day, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the magic of Light Lane, regardless of the time of day.

The visual component of Light Lane features the work of renowned artists Jake Early, Chris Jagmin, and Shachi Kale. Their projections will bring a dynamic layer of storytelling and visual intrigue to the experience, casting a kaleidoscope of colors and forms against the urban backdrop of Tempe.

Complementing the visual art, Light Lane boasts a soundtrack curated from the Tempe Playlist, a celebration of the city's rich musical diversity. Participants will pedal to the rhythms of the Bad Cactus Brass Band, Bogan Via, Cheap Hotels, Danielle Durack, Miguel Melgoza, One Way Sky, Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra, Pijama Piyama, Prime Society, Saraswathi Jones, Solh, and Tindal Muzic, among others.

Photos courtesy of city of Tempe GET READY FOR A SATURDAY MORNING FILLED WITH LIVE MUSIC, COMMUNITY BONDING, AND FUN IN THE PARK! This year’s Neighborhood Celebration Event is Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Kiwanis Park Fiesta Ramadas, 5711 S. All-America Way. You’re invited to come connect with your community over coffee, breakfast refreshments, yard games and a lively, informal awards celebration.

This year, residents are asked to bring toiletries for donation to Threadz, a local resource center that provides clothing, shoes, hygiene items, and school supplies to teenagers for school, internships, and job interviews. Residents looking to help can bring deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash and teen-appropriate clothing.

This event is free to attend and the whole community is invited. Tempe’s Mayor Corey Woods, the city council, small

businesses, local organizations, boards and commission members, residents, and volunteers will also be present.

“Each year, Tempe community members come out in droves to laugh, learn and connect at the park,” says Woods. “Compassionate, connected, and uniquely Tempe neighborhoods are sources of comfort, strength and beauty for the residents who live in them. The Neighborhood Celebration is a chance to honor and build on Tempe’s strong community bonds”

While this event encourages community bonding, it also celebrates those who go above and beyond serving the Tempe community. Earlier this year, Tempe asked residents to nominate their neighbors for awards. Award possibilities include honors for individuals, neighborhoods, spaces, events, or initiatives. This year’s award winners will be recognized at the event.

This event, which has become a cornerstone of community and remembrance, honors the legacy of Pat Tillman, who tragically lost his life 20 years ago after leaving a promising NFL career to serve his country in the wake of 9/11.

Since its inception in 2004 by Tillman's family and friends, Pat’s Run has evolved into a heartwarming tribute, attracting athletes of all ages and abilities to honor Tillman's legacy while supporting the Tillman Scholars program. This initiative has empowered over 850 scholars to make significant impacts in their communities and beyond, embodying the spirit of service and leadership that Tillman exemplified.

The 4.2-mile course, a nod to Tillman's #42 jersey at Arizona State University, will commence in the heart of Tempe and conclude at the 42-yard line of Mountain America Stadium, 500 E. Veterans Way, offering a poignant moment of reflection and celebration for all who cross the finish line. Wheelchair participants will lead the start at 7 a.m., followed closely by the run/walk participants and culminating with a children's run at 10 a.m.

Participants, whether joining in Tempe, at a Tillman Honor Run, or virtually from around the globe, will receive a limited edition Sport-Tek race shirt and the first medal in a commemorative three-medal series. Kids participating in the 0.42-mile run will also be awarded a Sport Tek shirt and a special prize.

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Bouldering Project offers fun and fitness for all.

Photos courtesy of Bouldering Project

Step into the world of Bouldering Project, where families and individuals alike discover a hub of adventure, community, and fitness. Situated in key cities like Seattle, Austin, and the latest addition, Tempe, Bouldering Project is revolutionizing the concept of a climbing gym. It's a place where climbing walls are just the beginning of the experience, offering a dynamic space for members to challenge themselves, form new friendships, and engage in a variety of activities extending well beyond the boulder.

Jordan Brown, the community marketing manager at Bouldering Project, emphasizes the gym's mission, "It's really about making bouldering accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a first timer, our doors are open."

The gym spans over 50,000 square feet, featuring dedicated yoga and fitness studios, a fitness center, and an expansive climbing area. The color circuit system for climbing routes simplifies the activity, making it more approachable. "Instead of intimidating grades, we have colors. It encourages exploration and fun," Brown explains.

Story

Bouldering Project is particularly inviting for families, with youth engagement being a top priority. "Kids are natural climbers," Brown says. The gym offers climbing clubs and camps for different age groups, designed to make climbing a fun and educational experience. These initiatives aim to ease fears associated with heights and falling, ensuring climbing is accessible and enjoyable for all children.

Building upon its family-friendly ethos, Bouldering Project features a dedicated Youth Area, thoughtfully segmented into three separate climbing zones. This arrangement caters to the varying skill levels and interests of young climbers, providing a safe and engaging environment for them to explore and grow. Adjacent to these climbing spaces, the party room serves as a versatile hub for celebrations and activities, ranging from birthday festivities to arts and crafts sessions, and even movie screenings.

"Our aim is to make every child's visit memorable, whether they're here to climb, celebrate, or learn something new," says Brown.

The gym's dedication to holistic fitness and community engagement is evident in its diverse

range of yoga and fitness classes. Brown shares, "We host a lot of different events in our space. We try to do at least one big event monthly." A recent highlight was the movie screening of "Real Rock 18," which attracted over 300 attendees. The event, in collaboration with local climbing and nonprofit groups, saw a portion of concession sales proceeds donated to these organizations.

Bouldering Project also fosters a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, critical in making everyone feel at home, from beginner climbers to seasoned veterans. Brown says, "You don’t need much equipment for bouldering. It's just you, yourself, and shoes. We even offer free climbing shoe rentals for first-time visitors." The gym's social vibe is a stark contrast to traditional gyms, promoting interaction and communal support among members.

Further enhancing the community feel, Bouldering Project partners with local businesses like Pair Cup Works for daily coffee and juice offerings and Nourish Eats for pre-made meals and snacks. "The biggest takeaway is how much more than a climbing gym we are," Brown adds, highlighting

the Bouldering Project’s expansive outdoor space for vendor markets and movie nights, among other member-focused events.

With plans for future group outings and the ongoing introduction of amenities like saunas and an enhanced cold plunge experience, Bouldering Project stands as a comprehensive wellness and community center.

"Membership is an all-access pass. This includes not just our top-notch climbing facilities but also our yoga and fitness classes, workout facility, and complimentary guest passes. Soon we will also have our wellness features like the cold plunges and saunas available full-time” says Brown. The inclusive membership model ensures that everyone can enjoy a diverse array of activities, catering to all ages and interests under one roof, at an affordable cost."

Tempe Students Invited to Submit Artwork for Law Day

Photos courtesy of city of Tempe

The youthful voices of Tempe's democracy will soon color canvas and paper as the Tempe Municipal Court calls upon the city's students to express their artistic talents.

Celebrating Law Day 2024, students in fourth through sixth grades from the Tempe school district are invited to submit their artwork, interpreting this year's theme: the importance of voices in democracy.

With creativity as their guide, young artists can choose to draw, paint, sketch, or even assemble a collage to convey their unique perspectives on democratic participation. This contest not only encourages individual expression but also collaborative efforts, allowing pairs to submit joint masterpieces. The deadline for this contest is April 15.

But the artistic endeavor isn't solely about competition. On April 6, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the city will host Law Day at the Library. Here, in a union of education and enjoyment, Tempe

Roll up your sleeves and get ready for a bean-credible journey from seed to plant, all within the cozy confines of a simple jar! Yes, you heard it right, you can grow your very own bean plant without a garden – let's see how it's done!

WHAT’S THE SCOOP ON SPROUTS?

Sprouting a bean is like magic – it's called germination! For a seed to wake up and grow, it needs just a few things: water, air, and the right temperature. That's it! Every seed has a tiny plant waiting inside, and you can help it out! Here’s how:

WHAT YOU NEED

• A bean seed

• A clear jar

• Paper towels or cotton balls

• Water

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wet your paper towel or napkin until it’s damp, not dripping, and fit it snugly into your jar.

2. Swish a little water around the inside of the jar.

3. Place your bean seed in the jar so it’s resting against the paper towel or cotton balls. It needs a little hug, not a squeeze!

4. Every couple of days, give your bean a mist of water.

In a few days, your bean seed should start to sprout, a process called germination. Your bean doesn't even need sunlight to start growing – that part comes later when it’s ready to leave the jar and get planted in the soil.

Curious about how light affects your bean plant's growth? Place one jar on a sunny windowsill and another in a dark cupboard. Make sure both beans get the same amount of water and warmth. After a week, take a peek – the bean in the sun will

probably be wearing a little green hat of leaves, while the one in the dark might have a pale and spindly look. The sunlight helps the plant make its food, which gives it that lovely green color. But even without light, the bean still grows with the energy stored in its seed. How cool is that?

Once it starts growing leaves, that's when it craves sunshine to turn into a big, strong plant. So, when your little bean looks like it’s ready for more room, it’s time to move it into a pot with soil.

2626 S Hardy Dr. Tempe,
2626 S Hardy Tempe,

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Stephanie Montgomery.

I’VE LIVED IN THE VALLEY FOR ALMOST A DECADE AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the lifestyle, the landscape, and the people.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… chasing after my kids, going for a run, and working on my business, Max & Ollie. It began as a children’s book about baseball and has developed into a baseball-themed gifts and apparel company, with a portion of the proceeds going to families in need via our charitable fund, Monty’s Marvels.

MY FAMILY IS… a happy, traveling circus. We’re always on the go, in part thanks to my husband’s career as a professional baseball player. The adventures are endless!

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… a hot cup of black coffee. Always hot, not iced – even in the summer!

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” It’s a classic –that and “Happy Gilmore,” which my brother and I can just about recite in its entirety.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an actress.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… I’ve been known to belt out “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” And “Africa” by Toto!

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my son, and now my infant daughter. Max & Ollie was inspired by my family (including our dog, Ollie), and now that I have a little girl, she further motivates me to work hard, be kind, and try and set a good example.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my son. He’s 4 and the stuff he says is (sometimes unintentionally) hilarious.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… any day in which you feel at peace at the end of it.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… the Diaper Bank of Central Arizona. Around one in three families in Arizona struggle to provide enough diapers for

their babies, and the implications are much bigger than you may think. We have been partnering with diaper banks around the country and we’re thrilled to be able to support a local organization doing amazing things to care for local families.

MY LIFE IS… organized chaos!

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my family.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Bora Bora or the Maldives.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… that life is not a dress rehearsal, and to try and live without any regrets.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

“Dune: Part Two”

Paul Atreides leads the Freman to take control of the planet Arrakis, no matter the cost.

The existence of a “Dune” adaptation that captures the spirit and themes of the original without sugarcoating is nothing short of miraculous. This is before we even delve into the intricacies of “Dune: Part Two.” Denis Villeneuve exerts complete control over every element, from the thrilling worm rides to the serene shots of people perched on sand dunes watching the sunset. Each scene resonates with its own significance. The cast delivers outstanding performances, with Austin Butler, Zendaya, and Javier Bardem embodying the diverse ideologies central to the film’s narrative with finesse. Notably bold, the movie ventures into darker territories than most recent blockbusters dare to tread. It portrays not the rise of a hero, but the ascendancy of a villain—a true tragedy.

“Drive-Away Dolls”

Two friends find themselves in the middle of a criminal conspiracy during a road trip.

This movie is a treat for those who relish a good dose of the zany, as it wholeheartedly embraces its B-movie roots. Think exaggerated characters, over-the-top dialogue, and an irresistibly silly mood throughout. For fans of this genre, it's a total riot—as it was for me—with a cast that perfectly embodies the film's outlandish spirit. There's an unexpected sweetness to the movie as well, with themes of friendship and love at its core, anchored by the excellent cast of Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. While the film's runtime is just over 80 minutes and feels a tad bloated, this may well contribute to its quirky charm and homage to classic B-movies. Above all, it's downright hilarious, offering every character a chance to deliver a memorable line. Ethan Coen hasn't lost his touch, and alongside his co-writer and wife, Tricia Cooke, they both flaunt considerable talent.

ON NETFLIX

“Spaceman”

A cosmonaut, on a mission that’s more personal than it seems, finds it can be the potential solution to his life problems.

Adam Sandler showcases his remarkable acting prowess once again, delivering a subdued performance laced with guilt. Yet, it's Paul Dano's voice role as a giant space spider that leaves the most profound impact, balancing emotional detachment with a sense of curiosity. Johan Renck, the director acclaimed for the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” brings his visually stunning and fluid camerawork to the fore, creating an immersive sensation of solitary space exploration. The film's momentum falters somewhat with cuts back to Earth; these segments might have been more effective as visions or flashbacks rather than a concurrent narrative, and they tend to make the film feel longer than necessary. Nonetheless, the film's genuine and bold approach makes it a commendable addition to the genre.

ON AMAZON PRIME

“Ricky Stanicky”

Three friends hire an actor to play a made up friend who gets them out of trouble.

At the one-hour mark of “Ricky Stanicky,”

it dawned on me that the film was only just setting the stage for its main plot, with a scant 50 minutes remaining. The movie seems like a relic from the early 2000s, and not in a nostalgic way. Peter Farrelly seems to be reaching for the comedic heights of his earlier works, pre“Green Book” acclaim, but that magic is noticeably absent. Instead, we're left with a film that oscillates between being obnoxious and simply distasteful, its humor lacking consistency and finesse. The jokes are tired and overly labored. The cast appears disengaged, with the notable exception of John Cena, who strives to inject a semblance of boldness into the mix. Alas, the movie's execution is rudimentary at best, reminiscent of a novice student project rather than a polished production. “Ricky Stanicky” feels like a film that missed its era by over a decade and might have been best left there.
