DESIGN PROCESS BEGINS FOR ALMA SCHOOL ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN SOUTH CHANDLER

Last month, Chandler City Council gave the green light to begin improvements on Alma School Road from Germann to Queen Creek roads. The city council awarded a professional services agreement to Olsson, Inc., for design services in an amount not to exceed $741,307.12.

A 2019 Design Concept Report (DCR) provided improvement recommendations for Alma School Road between Pecos and Queen Creek roads. Phase 1 of the project included widening of the Alma School Road corridor from Pecos to Germann roads. Construction was completed in 2021. This project, from Germann to Queen Creek roads, is Phase 2. It meets the recommendations from the DCR and the council-approved 2019 Transportation Master Plan Update to widen Alma School Road from four lanes to six lanes. This will provide higher capacity and allow residents to efficiently access regional transportation facilities. The project will begin at the first median break south of Germann Road to the intersection at Queen Creek

Road.

The project scope of work consists of the design for the widening of Alma School Road, including the design of pavement and median improvements, sewer manhole rehabilitation, streetlight relocation and upgrades, traffic signal modifications and utility coordination. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in 2025.

Paddles Up! Tempe Hosts the Thrilling Arizona Dragon Boat Festival

Photos courtesy of Arizona Dragon Boat Association

WITH ORIGINS TRACING BACK OVER TWO MILLENNIA, DRAGON BOAT RACING HAS TRANSFORMED FROM A SOLEMN CHINESE RITUAL INTO A VIBRANT GLOBAL SPORTING EVENT.

This March 23 and 24, the Arizona Dragon Boat Association (AZDBA) invites the public to witness this historical sport at Tempe Town Lake during the annual Arizona Dragon Boat Festival.

The event commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet who in ancient China drowned himself in the Miluo river to protest against the government. Local villagers, in their grief, raced out on their boats to protect his body from being eaten by fish, giving birth to dragon boat racing.

Today, a dragon boat is typically a 20-paddler vessel, complete with a drummer and a steersperson. For races, the boats are adorned with dragon heads and tails, living up to their mythical name. The AZDBA also offers smaller 10-person boats.

Dragon boating has seen a surge in popularity across the United States, particularly along both coasts and at Tempe Town Lake. It's a sport that transcends age and background, with teams ranging from youth and university groups to veterans and breast cancer survivors.

The AZDBA, part of a network of dragon boating organizations including the Pacific Dragon Boat Association and the United States Dragon Boat Federation, serves as the bedrock of Arizona's dragon boating activities. They host the annual festival, which has become a tradition since 2004, attracting teams from across the nation and occasionally international crews.

The main stage offers entertainment, and attendees can enjoy a variety of food and shopping vendors. Admission for spectators is free, making it an inclusive event for the whole community.

From the heart-pounding races that commence at 8 a.m. to the medal ceremonies on Sunday afternoon, the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival is must-see. It's a unique opportunity to experience an ancient tradition

that has found an unexpected home in the heart of the Arizona desert.

The Arizona Aloha Festival Offers Family Fun and Island Culture at Tempe Town Lake

Photos courtesy of Arizona Aloha Festival

THE ARIZONA ALOHA FESTIVAL IS INVITING EVERYONE TO HANG LOOSE AND IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN THE COLORFUL CULTURES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC. This event, marking its 30th anniversary, will bring a splash of island life to Tempe Beach Park, 620 N. Mill Ave., on March 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The festival is famed for its commitment to the aloha spirit — a blend of warmth, respect, and hospitality. It's a cultural experience like no other, and it's free. "We want everyone, regardless of background or income, to enjoy and learn about the rich Pacific Island cultures," says a spokesperson for the event.

Guests can embark on an island vacation without ever leaving the desert. The festival showcases a rich tapestry of Pacific Islander cultures through dance and music performances that pulse with the heart of the islands. From the graceful storytelling of hula to the vibrant beats of Tahitian drums, performances showcase islander culture.

Enjoy the Island Marketplace, a treasure trove of traditional crafts. Vendors display fresh flower leis, intricately woven baskets, hand-carved necklaces, and the vibrant tapa cloth, each item a piece of Pacific heritage. The marketplace offers a shopping experience that features island lifestyle arts, crafts, clothing, and home decor, with ATMs onsite for convenience.

The flavors of the islands will also come to life at the festival. From the smoky sweetness of kahlua pig to the savory comfort of Spam musubi, the festival's Taste the Islands section promises a tasty journey through the diverse cuisines of Hawaii and the South Pacific.

For families, the festival is a playground of cultural education and fun. Keiki (children) can engage in free crafts, while adults can learn to strum a ukulele at Aunty Aloha's Ukulele Corner or join a Kanakapila, a friendly jam session open to all skill levels.

The House of Knowledge or Hale Mana'o will provide interactive learning opportunities like storytelling, cooking demonstrations, and hula lessons. Meanwhile, the Ohana Village introduces visitors to local nonprofits and community resources, showcasing everything from sports clubs to educational groups.

As the festival looks forward to its upcoming schedule, it also introduces the Aloha Activities page, featuring island recipes and activities for families to enjoy at home.

For 30 years, the Arizona Aloha Festival has offered a peek into island culture, education, and family fun. For more information, visit azalohafest.org.

Pedal Back in Time with the Mayor at Chandler’s 16th Annual Family Bike Ride

Photos courtesy of city of Chandler CHANDLER RESIDENTS ARE INVITED TO PEDAL BACK IN TIME WITH MAYOR KEVIN HARTKE FOR A FUN AND LEISURELY BIKE RIDE ALONG THE SCENIC PASEO TRAIL DURING THE 16TH ANNUAL CHANDLER FAMILY BIKE RIDE. The event takes place Saturday, April 6 at Chandler’s Park & Ride lot, 2100 S. Hamilton St., which is on the southwest corner of Germann Road and Hamilton Street next to Tumbleweed Park.

The theme for this year’s event is “Pedaling Through Time,” and participants are invited to dress themselves and decorate their bicycles in the iconic styles of their favorite decade. Event organizer Nancy Jackson says, “Our family bike ride has always been about fun, laughter, and creating cherished memories. This year we've added a nostalgic twist. Each decade has its unique flair, from the roaring ’20s to the groovy ’70s and beyond. It is a chance to celebrate the timeless joy of biking while paying homage to the eras that shaped us.”

This 7.8-mile ride is held in conjunction with Valley Bike Month (April). Check in and activities begin at 7:30 a.m. New this year, the city will host a Bike Show in which all ages are welcome to showcase their wheels – from vintage classics to sleek modern rides. Prizes will be awarded for the most unique, best themed, and crowd favorite.

The bike ride will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. Riders, guided by the Chandler Police Bike Team, will bike along the Paseo Trail south to Crossbow Park, and back. Upon return, cyclists can enjoy a free Kona Ice to celebrate.

Family Bike Ride participants will receive a free t-shirt (while supplies last), and there will be light refreshments, along with information about bicycle safety, transit services, and related topics.

“I always look forward to the annual Family Bike Ride,” Mayor Hartke says. “It is a great way to join with others who share in the love of cycling and allows everyone the opportunity to experience the Paseo Trail, a key connector for cyclists in our community. And I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone geared up in their favorite decade.”

All participants are asked to pre-register online at chandleraz.gov/events/16thannual-chandler-family-bike-ride. While creativity and fun are encouraged, safety remains the top priority. Participants are required to wear helmets, and asked to obey traffic laws, and stay hydrated throughout the ride.

If you’re not able to attend the community event or would rather ride in the comfort of your own neighborhood or park, the city will also offer a virtual bike event from April 7 through April 14. Grab your family and friends and ride anytime during the weeklong event. Virtual riders who pre-register will receive a free t-shirt, while supplies last.

The Chandler Family Bike Ride is presented by the city’s Transportation Policy Division, with support from various city departments.

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Tyson Weed.

I’VE LIVED IN TEMPE FOR 10 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the city's vibrant and diverse community, which constantly inspires artists and connects us with amazing individuals from all walks of life.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… starting my day with a workout before heading to Sentient Tattoo Collective to work with a client on a tattoo,

usually a large-scale Asian-inspired piece. After work, I usually have a home cooked dinner with my wife and our two dogs. I typically spend the evening preparing for the next day's appointments.

MY FAMILY IS… huge. I am the oldest of nine. My immediate family is my wife and two dogs. And of course, my tattoo community family.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my mountain bike and the outdoors.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “The Big Lebowski.” It’s timeless, and the rug really tied the room together.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a firefighter. My younger brother wanted to be a comic book artist. Somewhere along the way we swapped and now I am an artist and he became a firefighter!

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… none, I do not do karaoke! But if I did, and the machine had it, I would attempt “No Good, Mr. Holden” by Graveyard.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… the other tattoo artists at Sentient Tattoo. Being around talented artists always motivates and inspires me.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… probably a dog video. I love animals!

THE PERFECT DAY IS… sleeping in, then going for a mountain bike ride at Hawes. Back at home, I’d spend the afternoon painting or sculpting, followed by a relaxing evening enjoying a homemade meal with a cold beer.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Tempe.

MY LIFE IS… fulfilled. Each day I get to create art and connect with others who appreciate art.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… the company of my loving wife!

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… a trip to Japan!

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… when someone shows you who they are, believe them.

Tacos & Craft Spices Up Tempe’s Dining Scene

Photos courtesy of Tacos & Craft

Tacos & Craft has opened its doors at 4715 S. Rural Rd., introducing a fresh take on high-quality, craft-made tacos and a selection of fine brews to the Tempe area. The quickcasual eatery kicked off its operations with a grand opening on March 2, hosting a family-friendly celebration that supported Junior Achievement, with 20% of the day's earnings donated to the organization.

“For us, people come first. We are so excited to be a part of the Tempe community and share our ‘do more with less’ mission that is highly food-focused, with a deep commitment to outstanding hospitality,” says Aldo Jaramillo, managing partner of Tacos & Craft. “Our goal is to provide our guests with excellent food and incredible local craft beers presented with the highest level of customer service.”

Tacos & Craft takes pride in its curated Mexican culinary adventure. The "Tacos de la Casa" menu boasts creations like the chipotle salmon, featuring hard-seared salmon with a fresh apple-cucumber pico, topped with cilantro-lime crema, and the roasted cauliflower with charred Romanesco salsa, accented by pickled onions. The camarones fritos shines with crispy Argentinian red shrimp, pineapple salsa, and jalapeño slaw.

The menu also offers traditional street-style tacos, including quesa birria with succulent slow-roasted goat and Oaxaca cheese, served with a chili consommé; al pastor featuring achiote-marinated pork paired with charred pineapple salsa; and the caramelo mixto, a delicious mix of Oaxaca cheese, carne asada, and chorizo, garnished with onions and cilantro.

Begin the meal with "aperitivos" like the queso fundido, a blend of melted Mexican cheeses and spicy chorizo with green chiles, or el mar mixto, a ceviche medley of shrimp and fresh fish complemented by pineapple-mango salsa and spicy cucumber, topped with avocado mousse, pickled onions, and fresno chiles. For something crispy, the flautas de res offers slow-cooked beef in a crunchy corn tortilla with avocado salsa.

Education Chandler's Teen Leadership Academy Opens Doors for Civic Engagement

Chandler's Mayor's Youth Commission has announced the 2024 Teen Leadership Academy, a spring break initiative designed to immerse local high schoolers in the mechanics of

municipal government and underscore the value of civic participation and professional growth. Set to take place on March 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Chandler City Hall, the program opens its doors to the first 25 applicants, offering a first-hand look at the inner workings of Arizona's fourth-largest city.

The Teen Leadership Academy is a dynamic, oneday event facilitated by the city’s Mayor’s Youth Commission. It aims to foster a deep understanding of local government operations, highlighting the significance of civic engagement and professional development among teenagers. Participants will have the rare opportunity to engage directly with city elected officials, managers, and staff, participating in activities designed to provide insight into how the city functions.

The program targets Chandler residents currently enrolled in high school, or a similar level home-school program. Eligible students must have their own

transportation to and from city hall, located at 175 S. Arizona Ave., and demonstrate a strong work ethic along with a keen interest in learning about their city.

The academy seeks motivated individuals who are eager to expand their horizons and connect with their community. With space limited to the first 25 participants, interested students are encouraged to apply early to secure their spot in this enriching program.

The initiative not only promises to enlighten participants on the importance of their role in local governance but also to bridge connections within the teen community, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

For more information or to apply, students and parents can reach out to Alexis Apodaca at 480-782-2222, or visit chandleraz.gov/government/mayor-and-council/ mayor-initiatives/teen-leadership-academy

During these formative years, while learning core academic subjects is important, learning soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, time management, and more, is also vital. Whether your student has been learning online this past year or in the classroom, chances are that they could benefit from some one-on-one guidance and tips on how to thrive during even the most challenging times. This is why the Leadership Society of Arizona (LSA) was created.

Dr. Jacob Kashiwagi is the chairman of LSA. He shares that the LSA’s leadership model is based on 28 years of business management research, which commenced at Arizona State University (ASU). His father, Dr. Dean Kashiwagi, and he taught skills originally intended for businesses and organizations to students at ASU.

“We taught honors courses at ASU that took the business model of running an organization more efficiently and helped students to use those skills in their own lives,” Dr. Kashiwagi says. “These skills included deductive logic and leadership and the students loved it. Classes were always full and often students’ grades and lives improved.”

This leadership model (known as “The Best Value Approach” business model by Dr. Dean Kashiwagi) has been developed through 2,000+ global projects valued at over $6.6 billion. LSA has adjusted this model for teens, parents, and teachers. They have supported over 2,300 students in seven years, according to the organization.

While teaching this model at ASU, two then-students, Jake Gunnoe, PhD, and Alfredo O. Rivera, PhD, received funding to take these same principles and create a way for them to help high school students from all different backgrounds. Through this new team, LSA was born.

“In college, I felt unprepared for the real world. I was stressed and lacked direction,” says Gunnoe. “I co-founded LSA to help students find stability, direction, and confidence before they get to college.”

LSA is comprised of researchers, educators, and consultants. Since 2013, they have been developing tools and processes to improve the delivery of educational services. They use an industry-proven professional development model to support students, parents, teachers, and professional organizations. This summer, local students have the chance to learn these tools through LSA’s one-of-a-kind online summer program.

“We have found that stability, happiness, and success come from understanding leadership and social skills,” according to the organization. “But you cannot force teenagers to learn these

principles. Students must learn how to apply them in their own lives and at their own pace.”

In this program, which uses Dr. Kashiwagi’s No-Influence Method mentoring program, students meet four days a week for three weeks for fun and interactive activities that relate to their interests. Students work one-on-one with a certified life coach to set goals, form successful habits, and plan for their futures.

“The online summer program is very individual based; the instructor to student ratio is as high as 1:3,” says Dr. Kashiwagi. “This allows for more interaction time. The program is activitybased and flexible, and it’s perfect for students who, because of this, can practice socializing.”

SOME OF THE ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAM’S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

• Objective: Have fun and teach students principles of success that lead them to live happier lives.

• Timeline: 3 weeks, 4 days per week, 1 hour classes

• Platform: They use a highly interactive online platform called Remo. It allows students to work in smaller groups. This allows for more activities, networking, and discussion.

• Individual Coaching: Each student works one-on-one with a life coach every week.

• Additional Resources: Access to a library of 20 hours of additional lessons and material.

“Every day, students will meet in a virtual class to complete activities and team building. Each week, courses will focus on a specific topic proven to make professionals more successful,” according to LSA. “During one-on-one coaching calls, coaches will get to know their students and help them with what they want (e.g. develop hobbies, create routines, strengthen relationships with family, and overcome personal challenges).”

This course is for students ages 12 on up (junior high through high school). For families who need the help, Dr. Kashiwagi shares that scholarships and financial help is available.

In addition to the summer program, LSA also offers workshops, free classes, an active YouTube channel, and even a free parents course online. They do this all while maintaining a zero operating budget as a nonprofit.

Registration for the online summer program is now available. To learn more, visit leadaz.org/summer.

SPA RKLING CLOVERS

Grow your own shamrock

Get ready to channel the luck of the Irish with a dazzling science project perfect for kids aged 8 to 14! This experiment combines creativity, basic chemistry, and the festive spirit of St. Patrick's Day.

MATERIALS

• Borax (found in the laundry aisle; remember, it's natural but not safe to ingest or inhale, so handle with care)

• Boiling water

• A wide-mouth glass mason jar

• Green and white pipe cleaners

• String

• A pencil

• Food coloring (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Shape Your Shamrock:

Twist your pipe cleaners into a shamrock shape. You can find shamrock templates online for guidance.

2. Prepare Your Solution:

For each mason jar, mix three cups of boiling water with ½ cup of Borax. The more saturated your solution, the larger your crystals will grow. Stir until the Borax is completely dissolved, and the solution is clear. Add a few drops of food coloring if you wish.

3. Suspend Your Shamrock:

Tie a string around the stem of your pipe cleaner shamrock, then tie the other end to a pencil. Gently lower the shamrock into the solution, ensuring it doesn't touch the sides or bottom of the jar. Place the jar in a spot where it won't be disturbed.

4. Wait for the Magic:

Let the jar sit undisturbed overnight. By morning, your pipe cleaner shamrock will be transformed into a sparkling, crystal-encrusted decoration.

5. Display Your Creation:

Carefully remove the shamrock from the solution, cut off the string, and display it in your window to catch the light.

EDUCATIONAL TWIST

This fun project is not only a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day but also offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the science behind crystal formation.

Discuss how a supersaturated solution allows for crystal growth on the pipe cleaner's surface, illustrating the principles of solubility, saturation, and crystallization. It's a magical blend of learning and festive crafting!

CTE Programs: Shaping Futures in Tempe's High Schools

Ask Hannah Watkins, a senior at Marcos de Niza High School, about her most valuable experience, and she'll quickly list the four Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs she's completed. Her diverse curriculum has included culinary arts, criminal justice, construction technology, and early childhood development.

"Once I transferred to Marcos, I discovered the hands-on nature of the CTE programs," Watkins says. "From field trips to certifications, I fell in love with everything. The skills I've gained have been invaluable both inside and outside of school." Currently working at a fast-food establishment, Watkins applies her culinary expertise daily, noting that her food handler's card, obtained through her Culinary Arts class, was instrumental in securing her job.

CTE programs have been integral to the U.S. education system for over a century, originating in the early 1920s following federal legislation by then-President Woodrow Wilson. Despite a decline in support and popularity during the 1980s and 1990s, when the concept was more narrowly defined as "vocational education," today's CTE landscape has undergone a renaissance.

These days, CTE has exploded in popularity, and programs have been developed to directly cater to both student interests and future job opportunities. Tempe Union High School District (TUHSD) offers 62 CTE programs across six high schools and almost half of the district’s 11,500 students are currently enrolled in a CTE program.

Programs offer students hands-on training, internships, and the opportunity to tap into the latest technology and trends of a given industry. And unlike the former "vocational" programs, CTE programs can culminate in postsecondary degrees or certificates.

Students also work with industry professionals and receive certification upon completion of programs that allow them to take their classroom learning and apply it to the real world.

“These [CTE] programs have helped me to earn multiple certifications ranging from a guard card to a food handler card,” Watkins says.

“These have granted me multiple job opportunities currently and will help me to prepare for my future.”

Tempe Union has industry advisors for all CTE programs and students are required to have multiple direct industry interactions every year.

Warren Cole, who serves as a program lead for the district’s Film & TV programs, says that having industry experts “on call” benefits everyone in the program. “We want our students to be relevant in the job market when they graduate, and one of the best ways to do that is with our advisory committee,” Cole says. “They give us support and insight so that we can stay up to date with our curriculum, and they even help arrange field trips, workshops, and guest speaker events for our students.”

Ultimately, all programs are designed to provide maximum opportunities for high school students to learn in-demand skills and provide a fast track to the workforce.

“CTE truly empowers students with wisdom and skills they can use throughout their entire careers and daily lives,” says Director of Career & Technical Education at TUHSD Eric Sorenson. “Not only does CTE give students an environment to discover their passion, but it also

gives guidance, so their passion is given purpose and a pathway for further education and career development.”

Cloe Bolen, who graduated from McClintock High School in 2023, participated in the Film & TV program during high school, and it gave her a new outlook on what she wanted to do with her future. She is currently in her second semester at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

“Film & TV opened up a whole new world for me and it truly changed my high school experience,” Bolen says. “I gained communication and teamwork skills through daily collaboration in the classroom by creating video announcements for my school. Until I took this class, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in the future. I was immediately hooked and knew this was something I had to pursue.”

Each February, the Association for Career and Technical Education celebrates CTE Month, and the TUHSD Governing Board took the opportunity to showcase both CTE teachers and students during their February 21 board meeting.

There was much to celebrate – results from the annual review by Arizona’s Department of Education (ADE) had come back and all 62 of Tempe Union’s CTE programs were ranked as fully compliant, with 95% ranked as “distinguished quality,” which is the highest rating that ADE gives out.

Four programs throughout the district received perfect scores for both compliance and quality: Marketing programs at both McClintock and Desert Vista, the McClintock Film & TV program, and Photography at Corona del Sol.

“We are so proud of our CTE students and their accomplishments, and we celebrate all of our CTE educators who provide both the education and inspiration for our students to learn and succeed in these areas of industry,” says Dr. Stacia Wilson, Tempe Union’s superintendent. “These programs are truly exemplary and prepare students for their future by meeting them in the present.”

Good Deeds Guide

Giving in the Grand Canyon State Arizona Gives Day takes place April 2.

On April 2, Arizona will witness an extraordinary surge of generosity as the annual Arizona Gives Day unfolds. This 24-hour online giving extravaganza, initiated by AZ Impact for Good in 2013, is not just a day but a movement that has galvanized the spirit of giving across the state.

With nearly $42 million raised since its inception, Arizona Gives Day illustrates the power of collective philanthropy and its transformative impact on the nonprofit sector.

Arizona is home to more than 20,000 nonprofits, from small grassroots organizations to large charities, all dedicated to making the Grand Canyon State a better place to live. These organizations touch every aspect of life, providing essential services that range

from healthcare and education to environmental conservation and the arts. The economic footprint of these nonprofits is substantial, with an annual impact of $23.5 billion, accounting for nearly 8% of the state's gross product and making the sector the fifth largest non-government employer.

The urgency to support these vital organizations has never been greater. Arizona Gives Day is a lifeline for many nonprofits that rely on donations to sustain their operations and expand their reach. The initiative not only raises funds but also increases awareness about the critical role nonprofits play in our communities and the state at large.

The unique online platform provided by azgives.org facilitates a direct connection between donors and causes they care about. It's a place where stories of

hope and resilience are shared, where the community can learn about the diverse needs across Arizona, and where every donation, big or small, contributes to the greater good. The platform is accessible year-round, allowing for ongoing support through scheduled or recurring donations, but it's on Arizona Gives Day that the state comes together in a remarkable display of generosity.

The benefits of participating in Arizona Gives Day extend beyond the immediate financial boost to nonprofits. It's an investment in the future of Arizona, creating a stronger, more vibrant community for all. Donations not only support the delivery of critical services but also contribute to the state's economy, strengthening it from within.

As Arizona Gives Day 2024 approaches, the call to action is clear: let's unite to support the heart of our state—the nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to improve our lives. Whether you're a lifelong Arizonan or new to the state, your gift on April 2 will help ensure that these essential organizations can continue their important work.

Together, we can make a lasting impact and demonstrate the true power of collective giving. Your contribution, no matter the size, will help strengthen and sustain the dynamic tapestry of nonprofits that make Arizona a place we're proud to call home.

Let's show the world the generous spirit of Arizona on this day of giving.

On Saturday, April 6, from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Phoenix nonprofit St. Joseph the Worker (SJW) will host its 26th Annual Hike for Hope at McDowell Mountain Regional Park’s Pemberton Trailhead located at 16300 McDowell Mountain Park Dr., in Fountain Hills.

The Hike for Hope event offers participants a choice between a 1.5-mile or 4.5-mile hike, offering a fun and interactive way for people of all ages

and their pets to make a difference in the community. Registration is $50 for adults and $10 for all children under the age of 13 and includes an adult T-shirt and breakfast with coffee. All proceeds will directly empower the nonprofit in eliminating obstacles to employment, equipping clients with the necessary resources to achieve financial success and self-sufficiency.

"As we embark on our 26th Annual Hike for Hope, we are reminded of the power of community and compassion," says Carrie Masters, CEO of St. Joseph the Worker. "Through this event, we not only raise vital funds but also awareness and hope for those striving for financial independence. Inspiring change, step by step, towards a brighter future for all."

With a goal of raising $100,000, SJW has implemented a friendly competition leaderboard on the event page, which highlights the top fundraisers. Hike for Hope participants can register and make

donations as individuals or teams. The top two individual fundraisers will be given prizes. Teams are also encouraged to come in costume. The best team costume will receive a catered lunch for 10 by Helpings Cafe, a social enterprise that helps end homelessness in the community.

In addition, SJW is organizing a 50/50 raffle for the event. Tickets can be purchased online or onsite for $5 each, with the option to bundle three tickets for $10 or six tickets for $20. The winner will receive 50% of the raffle proceeds, while the remaining 50% will directly support SJW. The drawing will take place on the day of the event, and participants do not need to be present to win.

Parking at McDowell Mountain Regional Park is free for event participants. SJW suggests hikers bring a water bottle, sun hat, sunscreen, hiking shoes, and cash or credit cards to purchase raffle tickets, as well as waste bags and a water bowl for pets.

The organization extends its reach to clients residing in more than 50 ZIP codes across the Valley through its three locations.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

“How To Have Sex”

Three British girls set out on a holiday, anticipating the best summer of their lives filled with new experiences and unforgettable adventures.

This was one of the most upsetting experiences I've had watching a movie in quite some time. Molly Manning Walker's debut captures the intensity of what should be fun and how quickly it becomes terrifying. The big parties feel isolating, and everything that is supposed to be enjoyable ends up turning sour. Mia McKenna-Bruce's performance encapsulates the feeling of uncertainty in what should be incredible moments, allowing you to feel the terror alongside her. An astonishing work, even though it is a tough one to experience.

“Out of Darkness”

A group of stone-age humans find themselves hunted by a terrifying force.

Simplicity is the best descriptor for “Out of Darkness,” a film that, ironically, is a meat-and-potatoes picture under an hour and a half. Throughout the film, it toys with audience expectations and violently pushes back against them. Desperation and fear drive characters towards their own destruction, yet the film is cleverly patient with its developments. Violence is administered in small doses, making its impact and the resulting hurt felt more acutely when it occurs. By the end, your heart is racing, begging for a moment to breathe.

"Lisa Frankenstein"

An outcast girl decides to create the man of her dreams, encountering some destruction along the way.

This film's reception will largely depend on the viewer's appreciation for its camp tone and style. "Lisa Frankenstein" possesses the elements of an over-the-top romantic comedy

yet fails to fully realize its potential. The direction and editing, for lack of a better term, feel lifeless, failing to align with the feverish tone and style it aims for, and rendering the film slower than intended. Additionally, its PG-13 rating constrains the film from achieving the level of zaniness it aspires to, leaving the cast to exert their utmost efforts to compensate. A disappointing venture, considering the talent and potential involved.

ON NETFLIX

"Orion and the Dark"

The embodiment of darkness assists a young boy in confronting his fears.

"Orion and the Dark" may not reach the heights of Charlie Kaufman’s most acclaimed works, including "Being John Malkovich," but it still demonstrates considerable thoughtfulness and emotional maturity, making it suitable for children. The film's appeal is

significantly bolstered by the likability of the voice cast and a well-balanced mix of humor and thematic depth. So compelling are these elements that viewers may find themselves wishing for more time with the characters beyond the film’s 90-minute duration. While the animation is commendably executed, there’s an inescapable sense that its potential is somewhat constrained by budgetary limitations. Overall, it presents a delightful treat, offering families a distinct alternative to the usual fare.
