411: The Latest Local News You Need to Know TEMPE ANNOUNCES NEIGHBORHOOD AWARDS TO CELEBRATE COMMUNITY HEROES AND INITIATIVES
The city of Tempe is calling for nominations for its Neighborhood Awards, an initiative designed to recognize the exceptional contributions within its communities. Residents are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals, spaces, events, or initiatives that have positively impacted Tempe. The Neighborhood Awards, open to nominations from anyone regardless of residency, seeks to highlight those who live and/or work in Tempe, celebrating their efforts in building a stronger, more connected community. Joel Stern and Gabe Hagan, chair and vice-chair of Tempe’s Neighborhood Advisory Commission, emphasize the awards as a means to “express our collective gratitude” and acknowledge the diverse ways individuals and groups contribute to the city’s vibrant community life. The honorees will be celebrated at the 2024 Neighborhood Celebration, scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at the Fiesta Ramadas area in Kiwanis Park. This annual event, hosted by the city of Tempe and sponsored by Salt River Project, promises a day filled with breakfast, live music, arts, crafts, and games, fostering community bonding and spirit. CHANDLER'S GOLDEN NEIGHBORS INVITED TO FEBRUARY EVENT The city of Chandler’s Golden Neighbors program is hosting a free event for “golden” residents (55 years and over) from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the city’s Public Housing Youth Recreation Center, 73 S. Hamilton St.
This month’s gathering will feature a volunteer passionate about art who will lead attendees through a painting activity for all levels. Supplies needed for the painting activity and snacks will be provided.
Good Neighbor 101, a free educational program offered by the city’s Neighborhood Resources Department, is back in session starting February 7. During the four 90-minute sessions offered during February and March, Chandler residents will hear directly from city departments to learn about their services, resources and tools that impact their homes and surrounding community. PACC911 is Uniting Forces to Save Arizona's Animals FOUNDED IN 1999, PACC911 (PHOENIX ANIMAL CARE COALITION) BRINGS TOGETHER OVER 140 ANIMAL RESCUE PARTNERS THROUGHOUT ARIZONA, MOST IN MARICOPA COUNTY, BY UNITING THEM AND OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GREATER BENEFIT OF THE ANIMALS SERVED.
PACC911 assists coalition partners by lifting the burden of some of the major challenges that rescues face daily, thus maximizing the numbers of animals that can be saved. PACC911 provides large scale outdoor Adopt-A-Thons in a variety of cities and venues, where partners can showcase adoptable animals and meet new adopters. PACC911 markets the events on radio, tv, outdoor, and print ads. Thousands of animals have found their new homes at well- known and well attended events. Their signature program is the Critical Care Program which offers their partners financial assistance to defray the high cost of veterinary care for sick, injured, or abused animals. This allows their rescue partners to “intake” thousands of animals who otherwise would have no chance at life. Their partners depend on these funds to save the lives of the most vulnerable animals. In 2023 alone, the program impacted close to 1,750 dogs and cats; and since inception in 2012, close to 10,000. As the population in Arizona continues to grow, the animal population grows in accordance, and it is clear that the existing county shelters are ill equipped to house the numbers of animals who are now residents of our counties and state. situation, PACC911’s rescue partners have stepped up and elevated their role in the community, saving thousands of animals who otherwise would have no safe havens when given up or abandoned. PACC911 also has a pet food pantry to help low-income families keep their pets in the home. Chuck Waggin’ Pet Food Pantry serves about 200 plus families keeping pets fed. HARRIS AS THE CITY’S NEW VICE MAYOR. Harris will serve in the position through January 9, 2025. op spellers from across Kyrene competed at the Kyrene School District Spelling Bee on Thursday, Jan. 18, at Kyrene Altadeña Middle School. Isabelle Garcia, a seventh-grade student at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School earned the title of District Champion. After six roller-coaster rounds and 105 words, Garcia correctly spelled the championship word vengeance to clinch the title. In the sixth and final round, Garcia spelled affiliate correctly, followed by the anticipated championship word. This year, there was a three-way tie for second place among students from three Kyrene elementary schools. All four students will advance to the Maricopa County Regional Bee in February. Kyrene’s top four outstanding spellers who will compete next month are:

alling all artists ages 6 to 17! The city of Chandler Community Center is set to transform into an energetic gallery featuring artwork from local youth at the Youth and Teen Art Show. Submissions are being accepted through March 11. From dynamic sculptures to multimedia illustrations to crocheted creations, the Chandler Youth and Teen Art Show invites young artists to share their creativity in a public forum. “We are thrilled to offer a platform for the Chandler youth community to showcase their vibrant creativity,” says Recreation Coordinator Kennedy Terrill. “The Youth and Teen Art Show is a celebration of the diverse talent that enriches our community. It’s a
wonderful opportunity for local youth to express and share their unique gifts with fellow community members, fostering a sense of connection." There is no cost to enter, and artists can submit up to three pieces. All accepted submissions will be featured in the Youth and Teen Art Show at the Chandler Community Center, open to the public March 22 through April 5. There will be a grand opening event, open to the public on March 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to viewing the artwork from talented Chandler artists, guests can also enjoy music from a Chandler teen band, participate in the voting panel, and kids can create an art project of their own. Prizes will be awarded to first place in each category, which will be determined after the submission

utting down your phone and picking up a backpack may help with the mental health crisis many youth are facing today.
According to the CDC, children and teens now spend an average of eight to nine hours in front of a screen daily, which can cause sensory overload and increase the risk of attention deficit disorders, anxiety, and depression. Too much screen time and limited experiences outdoors disproportionately affect children causing long-term developmental consequences. The local Grand Canyon Council Cub Scouts and

Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) programs encourage boys and girls to socialize, learn new skills, gain confidence, and participate in outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, and canoeing. Scouting provides access to outdoor programs and activities designed with children and their families in mind who want to incorporate more outdoor exercise, have access to character development, all the while forming lasting bonds with their peers. While Scouting is focused on teaching young people how to be prepared for life, it goes beyond helping the individual – parents and other family members may also benefit from Scouting by getting more quality time with their children. n Saturday, Feb. 24, the Chandler community celebrates science at the 13th annual Chandler Innovation Fair. The free event showcases the world of science from businesses, artists, students, and innovators. Stop by Dr. A.J. Chandler Park: Stage Plaza, located at 178 S. Commonwealth Ave., in Downtown Chandler from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to experience just how fun innovation and technology can be. This free event is designed to introduce youth to various fields in STEAM and offers unique opportunities for attendees to explore the discoveries of science engineered in their own backyard and taught in Chandler Unified schools. In fact, this is the perfect place for the next generation of engineers and other technology professionals to meet and experience the work of Chandler’s technology companies. Event sponsor, Northrop Grumman, will launch a model rocket every hour and their scientists and engineers will have at least 30 interactive activities on display. Like the other exhibitors, they will explain how science is important to daily life through interactive demonstrations. Northrop Grumman also will have a passport for kids to earn stamps as they complete each activity, including displays and experiments from Chandler Unified School District (CUSD). Once the passport is filled out, they may exchange it for a certificate.

Intel, Chandler’s largest employer, will host its Equity in STEAM tent. Intel employee volunteers will coach students and families on how to assemble tiny robots. In addition, there'll be several booths showcasing student innovators and their special projects. Many are competing to win a $500 cash prize for their school. Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography
T
his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.
MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE
1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes. • With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.
2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently. 3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water. • Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.

HI, MY NAME IS… Lisa Rehurek. I’VE LIVED IN ARIZONA FOR ALMOST MY ENTIRE LIFE – MINUS COLLEGE – AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the weather is mostly fantastic. You can easily get to mountains or the beach. I love the wideopen spaces, and it’s just home. Plus, Phoenix has become quite the foodie town, which makes me happy. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I spend my time in both Tempe and Forest Lakes, and my days are quite different depending on where I am. But generally, I love to play an empowering song first thing in the morning while I do my gratitude practice and cuddle with the pups. I do that before I get out of bed. I am not a morning person, but that empowering song usually gets me up. Then some reflective time whether it’s going for a walk, meditation,
or just chilling on the porch/patio. I then get my Wordle and Duolingo in before I start my day. Next, I jump into work to support my team and tackle my tasks for the day. If I’m in Tempe, maybe coffee or lunch with a colleague. Late afternoon, I sit in a massage chair while I read a chapter or two of a book, or play pickleball, which is new to me. If up north, it’s a buggy ride, reading time on the porch, or a late afternoon walk. Somewhere in there, I often find time for silly dancing or playing with my Oculus. In the evenings, it's more time on the porch with the pups, watching my trash TV shows, or doing more work.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Take Me Home Country Roads" with my group of friends. No solo karaoke for me!
MY FAMILY IS… a blessing! Amazingly supportive and, dare I say, relatively normal.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… time with the pups, perfect weather, some sort of activity, trying out a new restaurant with friends or family, an exciting business win, a surprise gift, getting a message that something I said or did inspired someone or propelled them forward. It’s also spending some time strategizing on the business and mentoring either a team member or another business owner. Oh, and a spa day. It’s always good if a spa is involved.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… I love to be a rule-breaker so I can’t pick just one – my dogs, my summer cabin, my friends and family, my quiet time, and my team. And the spa. “Ferrari” Enzo Ferrari’s personal and business struggles collide as he sets his company to compete in the 1957 Mille Miglia. Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat"). The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire. The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. However, it is Penelope Cruz who astonishes with her portrayal of quiet heartbreak, delivered with minimal 22 • February 2024 • THE KYRENE TIMES
words. Mann's skill as a filmmaker remains undiminished during his hiatus.
“Mayhem” In Thailand, an ex-gang member finds himself forced to return to that world after a family member is kidnapped.
“The Zone of Interest” The Höss family works towards their ideal life in the presence of Auschwitz. Jonathan Glazer's new movie presents a unique form of horror: watching a family lead a seemingly normal life overshadowed by an unspeakable evil. The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly
remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away. “The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him. "The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.
It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact. Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element. It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth. This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing. Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.
