411: The Latest Local News You Need to Know WILD HORSE PASS MOTORSPORTS PARK REBRANDS TO FIREBIRD MOTORSPORTS PARK With support from the Wild Horse Pass Development Authority and the Gila River Indian Community, the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park is now Firebird Motorsports Park. Along with the name change also comes a new logo. The facility, located at 20000 S. Maricopa Rd., in Chandler, will be led by track manager Casey Buckman and business administrator Connie Bopp, who combined bring more than 50 years of motorsports industry experience.
After the outpouring of support from the racing industry and race fans last year, the Wild Horse Pass Development Authority worked to reroute a freeway overpass that was supposed to go through the middle of the facility in order to keep it open. he city of Tempe is calling on community members to make a lasting impact in the lives of young students by becoming volunteer tutors. Through the AARP
Foundation Experience Corps program, individuals are offered a chance to guide and improve the reading skills of school children, thereby shaping their academic and personal futures. The program requires no special
qualifications, just a willingness to dedicate time and provide encouragement to young learners. This initiative is part of the city's broader efforts to support early education and engage families in the learning process. To facilitate the involvement of interested volunteers, the city has organized a series of in-person information sessions, with the first scheduled for January 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Ironwood Room of the Tempe Public Library, located at 3500 S. Rural Rd. Additional sessions will take place on January 19, February 2 and 23, March 8 and 29, and April 12 and 26. Attendance at one of these sessions is required for those interested in volunteering, and no prior registration is necessary. he Chandler City Council has approved agreements with Chandler Unified, Kyrene, and Mesa school districts to provide school resource officers at all public high schools and middle schools in Chandler through June 2026. The agreements, approved during the city council’s December 7 meeting, fund a combined total of 12 school resource officer positions to serve at assigned districts. Grants from the Arizona Department of Education School Safety Program cover nearly all the personnel costs for the positions. Any remaining personnel costs are split equally between the city and school districts. Nine officers will be dedicated to
Chandler Unified School District and assigned to Arizona College Prep, Basha, Chandler, and Hamilton high schools, Arizona College Prep middle school, and Andersen, Bogle, Santan, and Willis junior high schools. Two officers will be dedicated to the Kyrene School District and assigned to Aprende and Pueblo middle schools. One officer will be dedicated to Mesa Public Schools and assigned to Summit Academy. School resource officers are sworn members of the Chandler Police Department who perform police duties and provide a law enforcement officer presence on school campuses. Officers also assist administrators, teachers and students with school safety, security, and law enforcement education.

SECRET MESSAGES Using lemon juice as invisible ink.

his experiment is not only educational but also adds an element of mystery and fun, as kids can write secret messages and reveal them later. It's a great way to introduce basic chemistry concepts to kids in a playful manner. Objective To learn about acidic reactions and create secret messages using lemon juice as invisible ink. Materials • Lemons (or lemon juice) • Cotton swabs or small paintbrushes • White paper • A light bulb, an iron, or a hair dryer (heat source) • Water (optional, to dilute the lemon juice) Procedure 1. Juice Extraction: Squeeze the juice out of a lemon into a bowl. For a lighter ink, dilute with a little water. 2. Writing the Message: Dip a cotton swab or a small paintbrush into the lemon juice and write a message on the white paper. Let the paper dry completely; your message will become invisible once dry. 3. Revealing the Message: Carefully hold the paper near a heat source (such as a light bulb, an iron set on low heat, or a hair dryer). The heat will cause the lemon juice to oxidize and turn brown, revealing the secret message. Scientific Background • Lemon juice is acidic and weakens paper fibers. When heated, the acid accelerates the burning of these fibers, making the message appear. • This experiment teaches about chemical reactions, particularly oxidation, and the properties of acids. Safety Notes • Be careful when using heat sources. Adult supervision is recommended, especially with younger children. • Ensure the paper is held at a safe distance from the heat source to avoid any risk of burns or fire.

Chandler City Council Approves Agreements to Begin the Expansion of Tumbleweed Recreation Center

handler’s Tumbleweed Recreation Center (TRC) will soon be able to accommodate more community members due to an expansion project.
As required by city ordinance, this TRC expansion will also have a public art element, which was planned as part of the overall project and recommended by the city's Arts Commission. The arts project will include a walkway with arches leading into the building’s expansion.

This project will expand the existing facility by approximately 11,000 square feet, adding programming space that will be located on the east side of the building, located at 745 E. Germann Rd. The expanded programming space will accommodate both active and passive recreation programs targeting all ages and ability levels. The expansion will include two multipurpose rooms, two patios with shade structures, a fitness room, game area, restrooms, events hall, lobby, reception area with a separate entrance from the existing TRC, and updated landscaping. The front of the existing building will be updated with a new shade structure and signage.
The TRC was originally constructed in 2008 as a 62,000 square-foot recreational facility that provides a variety of classes and activities for all ages. The TRC currently features an art studio, catering and teaching kitchen, ceramics studio, child watch, classrooms, dance studio, fitness areas, group exercise studio, gymnasium, indoor track, locker room with showers, meeting room, multipurpose room, and racquetball courts. In 2017, the Community Services Department worked with PROS
Consulting to conduct a Senior Needs Assessment, targeted survey, and amenity spatial analysis. In 2018, a city council subcommittee reviewed the assessment findings, which showed that overall, the city's senior programs have performed effectively, but were impacted by space constraints in the existing senior center (originally constructed in 1986 and with significant future capital improvements) and an aging population with changing needs. The subcommittee's and study's recommendations supported the city taking steps to develop a Multigenerational Recreation Center Feasibility Study. In December 2019, the city council approved a contract with GreenPlay, LLC, to conduct this study, with recommendations presented in a council work session

in September 2020. The study found sufficient demand to justify a new multigenerational facility in Chandler. Several options were presented to council, including the option of a new or re-purposed facility in Chandler or an expansion of the existing TRC. City council directed staff to investigate a possible expansion of the TRC and approved funding as part of the annual budget process. On May 26, 2022, the council approved a contract with Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture to design the TRC multigenerational facility expansion. Construction of the TRC expansion will be led by the Chasse Building Team, Inc. and is expected to begin in early 2024 with a targeted completion in spring 2025. empe continues to lead the way in addressing affordable housing needs with plans for a new development in north Tempe through $10.8 million in funding from Maricopa County. Through this partnership, the city envisions a high-density, mixed-income and mixed-use urban development that could be transformative for the area and spark additional housing opportunities. The city is currently exploring properties; no location has been selected. Ultimately, the city will seek a development partner to reimagine the chosen property. “We are grateful for our partnership with Maricopa County and our shared vision to substantially increase affordable housing in Tempe and cities across our region,” says Mayor Corey Woods. “In Tempe, our innovative Hometown for All initiative is driving an expansion
of affordable housing to provide opportunities for anyone who wants to call this city home." “Our partnerships with Maricopa County and other stakeholders are valued and vital to addressing housing needs for individuals and families in our community,” Woods says. Maricopa County is allocating American Rescue Plan Act funds for a number of municipal projects to help address housing challenges in the region. The city council approved the agreement with the county last month. Any purchase of property in north Tempe would come back to the city council for approval; there is no timeline for a purchase. Preliminary plans call for a development that includes approximately 50 affordable housing units, available to households earning at or below 80% of the Area Median Income. That would be $74,800 or less for a four-person
household or $59,850 or less for a twoperson household. Amenities at the housing development will be focused on promoting a healthy, supportive, community-focused lifestyle with several design priorities, including: • Opportunities for social interaction between neighbors in an intergenerational community • Focuses on food access through an urban scale grocery store and community safety with a Tempe police sub-station • Achieving the lowest possible energy usage for a multi-family development The new development will bolster Tempe’s wide-ranging efforts to meet the housing needs of families, young professionals, older adults, and others in the city. “This funding by Maricopa County will help us reach our strategic goal of increasing the percentage of affordable
housing in Tempe,” says City Manager Rosa Inchausti. “Issues like homelessness and affordable housing are regional and national issues. Our city greatly appreciates the support of Maricopa County to elevate our community’s efforts. It helps everyone.” Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman highlighted the impact of this investment saying, "This decision reflects a commitment that goes beyond bricks and mortar; it's about creating a foundation for people to thrive. This funding is a catalyst for creating a vibrant neighborhood where our residents can participate in our local economy."

Hello Neighbor! most important thing in my life and being a relatively new father has been such an eye-opening and fun experience for me. As first-time parents, it has been unbelievable for my wife and me to witness our son growing up right before our eyes! ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Arizona State Athletics. As a lifetime fan and Arizona State University alum, these teams have always been a big part of my life. Also, I am a season ticket holder for ASU football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, so I basically plan my life around my family and ASU. I even met my wife at an ASU basketball game, so we get to enjoy it all together! HI, MY NAME IS… Marcos Arroyo. I’VE LIVED IN TEMPE FOR 32 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… I have great memories here. Tempe is where I have grown up and I’m proud to call it my hometown. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… spending time with my family is a must. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my son, Remy. He inspires me to be a better person and encourages me to strive for more so I can give him the best life possible. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… a video of bad golf swings. It made me feel better about my golf game. THE PERFECT DAY IS… definitely a Saturday! There is no better way to spend the day than tailgating before an Arizona State University game surrounded by friends, family, and fellow fans before celebrating an ASU victory. I met my wife at an ASU basketball game, so these have always been a special part of my life. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Fiesta Bowl Charities. Growing up in Tempe, I was aware of Fiesta Bowl Charities’ involvement in making a difference in the fields of youth, sports, and education, but experiencing it firsthand and being directly involved in giving back to our community has been very meaningful to me.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… my son, Remy. He was born just two days before my birthday, so we were able to celebrate it together. It’s the best gift I could have asked for and it’s nice to almost share a birthday with him! MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… I actually got to experience it! I had always dreamed of seeing ASU play at the Battle 4 Atlantis basketball tournament on Paradise Island in The Bahamas and I got to make it happen a few years back. It was my first time traveling outside of the country and a fantastic experience. Another dream vacation of mine is to visit Maui to witness ASU basketball compete in the Maui Invitational.
My wife is a teacher, so taking part in the Palo Verde Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers Draft Day presented by SRP is very significant to me. The program honors 500 teachers statewide with $2,500 classroom grants, so they don’t have to use their own money to enhance their classrooms. MY LIFE IS… awesome! It’s full of family, friends, and sports.

"The Holdovers" A grumpy boarding school professor forms a unique bond with a troubled student and the head cook over the Christmas break. It’s admirable that "The Holdovers" succeeds in recreating the look and aesthetic of the decade it is set in and inspired by. Thankfully, it's not just a superficial homage but also its own complete picture about the complicated people we call family. Paul Giamatti reminds everyone how good he truly is after staying mostly out of the spotlight, playing a gruff man who is more thoughtful than he seems. Meanwhile, Da'Vine Joy Randolph brilliantly portrays a range of emotions as a woman who has gone through an unspeakable tragedy while maintaining empathy. Newcomer Dominic Sessa elevates what could have been a clichéd “rough kid with a heart of gold” role. It’s a movie that feels familiar yet brings something fresh to the table, and that alone is worth your attention. 22 • January 2024 • THE KYRENE TIMES
"Candy Cane Lane" A father and his family race to beat a mischievous elf who brings the 12 days of Christmas to life and to win the neighborhood’s contest for best-decorated home.
"Leave the World Behind" A family’s trip to upstate New York is interrupted by the appearance of the house’s owners and signs of terror. One of the most jarring movies of the year, "Leave the World Behind" is surprisingly amateurish, especially compared to the great writer/ director Sam Esmail’s TV series, "Mr. Robot." The film hammers you with its attempts at ideas without saying anything particularly intriguing. The filmmaking is also incredibly self-indulgent, flashy for the sake of flashiness. Most of the cast delivers subpar performances, though Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali certainly do their best with what they're given. It’s the type of film that fails to be intense or engaging, instead becoming merely irritating. By the midway point, you might find yourself disinterested in the characters' fates. It’s also worth noting it features one of the most illconceived final jokes in recent cinema.
"May December" An actress becomes entangled in the lives of a couple whose controversial romance is the subject of her new movie. "May December" has been mistakenly described as camp because its camera movements, music, and uncanny tone showcase how unsettling the movie can be. You're peering into the nightmare of the predatory relationship between Gracie and Joe, portrayed convincingly by Julianne Moore’s emotionally manipulative character and Charles Melton’s portrayal of quiet suffering. Natalie Portman delivers a performance that reflects a strange obsession with the world around her, bordering on inappropriate, mirroring our culture’s odd fascination with true crime without considering its impact on those involved. Director Todd Haynes creates a palpable unease around our protagonists and their surroundings, making us feel we should look away, but we can't. It's a remarkable achievement from everyone involved.
Director Reginald Hudlin attempts to capture the spirit of the holiday season, and there is some charm to be found, particularly in the stopmotion animation. However, "Candy Cane Lane" mostly goes through the motions as a family film, dragging on too long and ending up rather dull. Eddie Murphy still manages to charm just with his smile, but one can't help but wish for more, especially after his brilliant performance in "Dolemite Is My Name." The rest of the cast shows potential in their comedic timing but isn’t given much to work with. The film is an example of a missed opportunity for what could have been an enjoyable experience.
