SCOTTSDALE 411: The Latest Local News You Need to Know

SCOTTSDALE CRACKS DOWN ON NATURAL GRASS TO BOOST WATER CONSERVATION Taking decisive action towards water conservation, Scottsdale has put forth an ordinance that restricts the use of natural grass in front yards of all newly built single-family homes. This move aligns with an overwhelming amount of feedback received from Scottsdale Water customers who exhibited strong backing for such an initiative.

With an ambitious target of curbing water consumption by 5%, Scottsdale is making considerable strides in its conservation efforts. A review of the first half of 2023 reveals that the city government has notably decreased its water use by 9% in comparison to the average consumption of the preceding three years. Moreover, the collective efforts of residents and businesses have led to a commendable reduction of 7%.

This united stand towards a sustainable future has culminated in a massive saving of 657 million gallons of water in just six months!

For those who have older properties and are interested in joining the wave of change, the city extends a helping hand. Despite being exempt from the ordinance, these homeowners can take advantage of the city’s rebate programs aimed at encouraging permanent water reduction. Notably, among these programs is an incentive for grass removal.

SCOTTSDALE’S VETERANS DAY SALUTE Scottsdale’s 2023 Veterans Day Commemoration will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 on the Memorial Lawn at Scottsdale Civic Center in partnership with American Legion Post 44 and other veterans service organizations.

This year’s keynote speaker is Michael McLaughlin, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (retired), who had a 30-year career in the U.S. Naval Submarine force. Michael graduated from high school in Mesa, Arizona, and is a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy.

Scottsdale’s annual Veterans Day commemoration is emceed by Mayor David D. Ortega, and in addition to the keynote speaker, includes remarks from representatives of Scottsdale’s American Legion Post 44 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter 3513.

The morning event will take place at the Civic Center Memorial Lawn – the area adjacent to city hall that includes Scottsdale’s Memorial for the Fallen and the Chaplain sculpture, honoring veterans and the chaplains who have served as spiritual advisors to military comrades.

The Scottsdale Fire Department Pipe and Drums kicks off the program at 10:30 a.m. with a half-hour of patriotic music.

The Phoenix Theatre Company Kicks off Its 104th Season with an Emotional Tribute to Jazz Icon Billie Holiday ONCE CALLED THE “ESSENCE OF COOL” BY FAMED MUSICIAN DUKE ELLINGTON, BILLIE HOLIDAY IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAZZ VOCALISTS OF ALL TIME. “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” is onstage now through Nov. 26 at The Phoenix Theatre Company in Central Phoenix. The production kicks off the 104th season of shows at Arizona’s oldest producing theatre.

In the Tony-award nominated musical, audiences get an up close and intimate look at the iconic vocalist. The show takes place in 1959 in a seedy Philadelphia bar just four months before Holliday’s tragic death. “Lady Day” includes soulful and heart-wrenching songs from her extraordinary music catalog and touches on her battles with alcoholism and drug abuse in her later years.

Holiday’s canon includes recognizable songs like “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.” The one-woman show features a live band on stage and Yolanda London as Holiday. This is not the first time London has portrayed Holiday at The Phoenix Theatre Company. She was part of the heralded 2016 production of “Lady Day” and has since played Holiday in productions across the country including shows in Alabama and Pennsylvania. This will be her fifth time in the role.

“I would definitely say I feel connected to Billie Holiday in many ways,” says London. “I find her music incredibly moving and emotional. I also feel for her. Her story is one of deep sadness and remarkable perseverance. When she sings, I feel her music in my soul. It sounds hyperbolic, but it’s true. I find her music incredibly moving and emotional.”

This production is especially poignant for London who will be performing the story at the same age Holiday was when she died. “I think, now more than ever, I’m ready to tell her story,” she says.

In her main stage directorial debut at The Phoenix Theatre Company, Chanel Bragg feels a tremendous responsibility to share the highs and lows of the prolific vocalist’s life.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to tell this story and to pay a great deal of respect and reverence to the legend with introspection through the Black female lens,” says Bragg. “I have always held a deeply personal connection to Billie Holiday and the universality of her story of both joy and immense pain. I hope this production will leave audiences as enamored with her as I have been since I was a young child.”

Bragg started her professional career at The Phoenix Theatre Company in 2010 when she made her stage debut in “Hairspray.” She has since performed in countless shows at the theatre and co-founded two initiatives: The Soul of Broadway performance troupe in 2009 and The United Colours of Arizona Theatre in 2016 with an emphasis to inspire diversity, equity, and true inclusion in the local arts community.

“There are a lot of strong emotions in this show - love, pain, and the ability of people to lean on each other when times are tough,” Bragg adds. “Billie was not afraid to take risks. She was a truth teller, a disrupter, and an unmatched artist. I am proud to be able to bring her story to Valley audiences again.”

“Lady Day at the Emerson Grill” takes place in the intimate Judith Hardes Theatre on The Phoenix Theatre Company’s Downtown campus. The cabaret-style theatre layout enhances the connection between audience members and performers like London.

ARIZONA’S LARGEST AND LONGEST-RUNNING ARTIST STUDIO TOUR, HIDDEN IN THE HILLS, RETURNS FOR ITS 27TH YEAR DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS OF NOVEMBER: FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17 TO 19 AND NOVEMBER 24 TO 26. This year’s free, self-guided tour features 164 artists at 41 studios throughout North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree.

Two Scottsdale artists have their work featured in the event’s four-color, glossy artist directory. Ceramic artist Sharon Albrektsen’s fanciful sculpture, “Bee Free,” graces the directory cover. The surreal piece depicts a fairytale-like woman setting a bee free. And glass artist Jacki Cohen’s bright, colorful “Blaze” wall panel is featured on the directory’s back cover.

A NARRATIVE ARTIST WHO LOVES CLAY Sharon Albrektsen grew up in an artistic family who encouraged her to explore her imagination. Being dyslexic, she struggled to read, but she thrived in her art classes. She earned her BA and MA from Adams State College in Colorado, and MFA at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She owned and operated a coffee

house, and she also taught art in grades from kindergarten through college.

“I am a narrative artist who is in love with clay,” Albrektsen says. “Clay gives me the placidity to capture my thoughts when it is wet and permanency of the form when fired. My work is layered with meanings of who I am now and who I was.”

Using borrowed symbols from the Christian religion, other cultures visited in her travels, and those from history, she combines all to make her own personal symbolism.

Inspired by the beauty of nature, she creates functional and decorative glass art.

“I love color, vibrancy, and bold design. These are what ignite my soul and fuel my spirit,” she says.

In addition to incorporating circles and other symbols into her work that celebrate life, she often mixes in dichroic glass, which is a metallic glass that sparkles and shines.

“Previously, I made a vague reference to the figure in my imagery. Lately, the figure has become of grave importance to the story-telling nature of my work,” she says.

Cohen’s wall panel “Blaze,” is featured on the back cover of the artist directory cover. Measuring 12 inches wide by 32 inches high, the stunning fused glass piece was inspired by the beauty of Arizona’s sunrises and sunsets.

Albrektsen will exhibit and sell her work at glass artist Sandy Pendleton’s Studio No. 22 in Cave Creek.

Cohen will exhibit and sell her new work at Wesley Hartin Art Studio No. 8 in Carefree.

MATERIALS: • 1 cup of cornstarch • ½ cup of pumpkin puree (storebought or homemade) • A mixing bowl • A spoon • Optional: Fall-themed food coloring (orange, brown, or gold) and cinnamon for added scent PROCEDURE: 1. Preparation: Ensure you have a clean workspace, as oobleck can get a bit messy!

2. Mixing Time: In the mixing bowl, combine the cornstarch and pumpkin puree.

3. Stir: Mix the two ingredients together until well combined. You're looking for a mixture that's hard when you tap on it but turns liquid when you let it rest.

4. Optional Add-ins: For a more festive feel, add a few drops of fallthemed food coloring and stir well.

If you want your oobleck to have a delightful scent, sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon and mix.

5. Play and Explore: Let kids touch and play with the pumpkin oobleck.

ust three months out of physical therapy school with swelling elbows, hands, knees, and feet, and unable to open jars or use stairs, Dr. Tom Padilla, 25, went to see a physician through his insurance plan. But after reviewing the X-rays, the doctor told him that he “had arthritis and would have to learn to live with it.” He was stunned, as the doctor would not run further tests, and simply offered him anti-inflammatory medication.

Nine months after the diagnosis, seeing other health plan doctors for a second opinion, numerous tests, and trying several unconventional remedies, it turned out to be mold toxicity. Dr. Padilla recovered — and learned a lesson that he applies to his medical practice The Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) in Scottsdale.

“Over the past five years of growing this clinic, I’ve made sure situations like mine are not what our clients experience,” Dr. Padilla says. “A lot of our clients come in with the same struggles I had when trying to find a cure for my ailments.”

Those struggles include: • Doctors who don’t have time for or have no interest in treating the whole person.

• Healthcare providers who don’t know what to do when a patient doesn’t fit into a known diagnosis in the medical system.

• No communication between doctors.

• Doctors who prescribe pills to manage symptoms rather than find the root cause.

“This is why I stress to all of our staff and clients that we’re different for a reason,” Dr. Padilla says. “We are continuously working to improve the experience our patients have, and we go to great lengths to make sure our outcomes are as good as possible.”

One point of pride is the results DPT gets for people struggling with back pain or sciatica.

“This is a condition that is largely considered ‘chronic and unchangeable’ by the medical community,” explains Dr. Padilla. “For years, opiates have been one of the primary ways to help someone with chronic back pain.

Oftentimes the side-effects are worse than the pain! Over the past several years, our clinic has focused on solving the root cause of this problem and we’ve helped people that have had back pain for a few months to more than 20 years to resolve their symptoms and get back to the activities they enjoy without it coming back.”

DPT has stuck to its promises. Every plan of care is individualized to the patient. There’s no cookie-cutter approach, no one gets passed to an assistant to do exercises in a corner, and DPT makes sure that there is measurable and meaningful progress every few sessions–– otherwise, they change directions.

“We don’t want people feeling stuck or like they don’t know what’s wrong or why,” says Dr. Padilla. “At DPT, we want them to know why they’re doing the things we ask them, and what they can expect to see change and when. That way, if we don’t see those things changing, we can go another direction rather than continuing down the same path expecting different results.”

Dr. Padilla says one DPT patient flew down from Minnesota for care because he was 32 years old, already had two back surgeries, and didn’t want a fusion after being told he had another herniated disc. The patient was due to be a father and couldn’t bend forward to brush his teeth, let alone pick up a baby out of a crib. “Today, Grant is playing basketball, running, and having a blast with his 3-month-old son,” says Dr. Padilla.

Initially, Dr. Padilla’s desire to become a physical therapist was fueled during his years as a personal trainer, when clients would come to him saying they had been unable to overcome injuries despite years of efforts and many different doctors.

He received his doctorate in physical therapy in 2014 from the University of Southern California.

“Although our football team has wavered from time to time, our top-ranking PT school has maintained a leading position over many years!” he says.

The latest chart? It’s giving off the chilliest vibes we’ve felt since last November. And if there’s one treasure I’ve unearthed in my real estate adventures, the only constant about real estate is its inconsistency.

Let’s dive deeper into this. Each dawn, it seems the tide is pulling more in favor of the buyers. But don’t be fooled: sellers are like seasoned sailors with a few navigational tricks left. The currents are changing, but the ship hasn’t capsized just yet. Now, causing some waves are the continually rising mortgage rates.

Many had set their compasses expecting interest rates to drift downwards

this year. But the tides had other plans.

The often-elusive bond market unfurled its unexpected sails, causing the 30year fixed mortgage rate to climb from 7.3% to 7.7% within a month’s voyage.

And the equities markets? They’re like unpredictable seas, with many foreseeing rougher waters ahead.

On The Local Front: Scottsdale North Listing Count

Predictably, this has buyers battening down their hatches. Imagine setting your sights on a property with these financial squalls blowing, further intensified by global political headwinds.

Steering through this sea can be disorienting. Once as rare as a sailor’s tale, new listings have been appearing on the horizon much more frequently.

And with buyer winds not blowing as fiercely, active listings have surged like a rising tide, up by 12% in just a month!

It’s crucial to master the ebb and flow of this supply and demand dance.

Housing charts are also raising a few storm flags.

Bank of America indicates that our current housing market more closely resembles the early 1980s than 2008. In that era, Fed Chair Paul Volcker bravely steered the ship, determined to curb the inflationary waves started in the 70s, even if it risked running aground. Let’s hope we drop

anchor, and we don’t sail those waters again.

Even our Scottsdale North safe harbor, usually known for its calm waters, is feeling the ripples. One look at the chart above reveals the new currents in motion. As the momentum of sales becomes gentler, figures like ‘months of supply’ are catching the breeze. Those vibrant seller’s market gusts we felt in past quarters? They seem to be softening, especially with this past month’s peak at 264 new listings.

From my perch on the crow’s nest, Scottsdale North’s real estate often charts unexpected courses. Just a year ago, who would’ve foreseen that $/SF

would set sail upwards by 3%? It’s wise to keep a steady hand on the wheel and not be swayed by fleeting currents.

What’s on the horizon for the next eight weeks? Uncertain waters, with the possibility of some surprises. But let’s not forget our navigational skills; we’ve sailed through squalls before, like the one in October 2022.

Busting Myths About Estate Planning

here is lots of confusion about estate planning, what wills and trusts do, and what the law provides. Let’s bust a few of those persistent myths!

MYTH 1: MY WILL TRANSFERS MY PROPERTY TO MY HEIRS AT DEATH. Wrong! Your will is a document that tells the court who to appoint as your executor and to direct the executor where and how to distribute your assets. A will alone won’t deed your house to your children or cause your bank to give the funds in your bank account to your heirs. Instead, before your executor can even touch these assets, they are forced to file paperwork with the court to start the probate. Then they must file reports with the court as they take care of your estate. This probate proceeding is expensive and time consuming – and it means that your will and anything else filed is now available for the public to see.

MYTH 2: ESTATE PLANNING IS NOT NECESSARY UNLESS I AM OLD OR RICH: What we mean when we say “estate planning” is planning for your assets - whether you have a lot or a little. Even your 18-year-old has an estate – a bank account, the paycheck their employer

owes, their laptop, car, and other personal property.

Your “estate” is simply what you own. If you don’t prepare any plan, the state of Arizona has dictated what happens. It will likely also require probate, and it may not result in who you want being in charge, and it may not dispose of your assets the way you would like.

The truth is, if you have assets, you should have a written estate plan. It may not be as elaborate as Bill Gates’ plan or be used as soon as your 90-year-old grandfather’s plan, but it is still important to have a plan you put together.

MYTH 3: A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST IS TOO COMPLICATED FOR MY SIMPLE ESTATE: The revocable living trust simplifies things. It’s easy for you to use, and for someone else to assist you if you need help managing your finances during your life.

That’s right – the revocable living trust operates to help you during your life and not just at your death. During your life, you own your property in the trust, but you still own everything, and file taxes just the same as always. You have complete control over your assets, just as you did before. But if you become disabled or incapacitated, your designated successor trustee can step in to help you, and on your death, the successor trustee distributes your property without any court involvement and distributes it the way you have directed in your trust. The revocable living trust is an easy way to provide for the future while maintaining control over your assets.

Community Painting Preserves Cherished Memory

M

ary Alice Warsco could no longer remember how to dress herself, make coffee, or even what she ate for lunch. Dementia made day-to-day tasks too confusing. But when reminiscing about her childhood farm in Michigan, the 92-year-old had perfect clarity.

During a recent visit with her Hospice of the Valley nurse, Emily Irvine, she shared in vivid detail a family hardship from long ago. One summer when she was just a young girl, her father and brother were seriously injured in a car accident and unable to harvest their fields of ripened crops. Suddenly, Warsco and her mother heard a distant rumble, growing ever louder. They raced to the front porch to discover a long line of tractors slowly making their way toward them. “I had never seen so many tractors in my whole life,” Warsco recalls.

The artwork was framed with a descriptive label on the back so future generations would know the story behind it. When Emily and Mandy went to Mary’s Peoria home to present the painting, they saw her eyes light up… and then shine with tears of remembrance. To everyone’s delight, she immediately began telling the story again, this time holding Richards' precious painting tightly in her arms.

“It felt almost sacred,” Irvine reflects. “Mary had lost so much of her memory, but she still had that one. These are the moments that make life and work very rewarding.”

Mandy’s painting depicts the kindness of neighbors on their way to Mary’s family farm to save their summer crops.

The small town had banded together to do the harvesting. Warsco and her father were so overcome with gratitude that they sat on the porch and wept as the kind neighbors worked their fields. In a matter of hours, they finished the job and returned to their own farms.

“I instantly pictured in my head what this memory might have looked like for her,” says Irvine. “And I thought — a painting!

So, I reached out to our volunteer department, and they found an amazing Hospice of the Valley volunteer to preserve this special memory on canvas.”

The eager artist was Mandy Richards, a Scottsdale resident who loves volunteering her time to visit patients and families. “I was so excited and couldn’t wait to get started!” she exclaims. “One

“No One Will Save You” A young woman's home is invaded by extraterrestrials.

When a genre film addresses trauma while staying true to its genre elements, it's a treat, and “No One Will Save You” accomplishes this. For 90 minutes, it lives up to the phrase "all killer, no filler" with an active series of escalating set pieces and tension. In a movie with almost no dialogue, Kaitlyn Denver and director/ writer Brian Duffield do an impressive job of letting the actions speak for themselves while depicting the isolation our character feels. The big reveal is slightly half-baked and causes an odd ending, but not in a way that ruins the movie.

Combine this with some stellar creature effects, and you have a solid, exciting, and even scary creature feature.

IN THEATERS “The Creator” A soldier in the near future becomes the unintentional protector of a robot girl who is more powerful than it seems.

“The Creator” is unfortunately a victim of bad timing given the current debate around AI, and it risks having its message being misinterpreted. Fundamentally, Gareth Edwards uses it as a metaphor for U.S. militarization in events such as the Vietnam War, and how it executes that will be up to the beholder, though I found it enthralling. Much of that is thanks to Edwards' direction, which brings a combination of technology and natural beauty to its world, and the lead performances of John David Washington (with his dry charisma bringing heart to the character of Joshua) and newcomer Madeline Yuna Voyles (incredibly gifted at delivering a balance between emotional and robotic). I also greatly appreciate the tone of the film.

It manages to stay true to its general message and idea without falling apart, though at times the imagery can risk coming off as exploitative or empty. It also mostly underuses its supporting cast, aside from Ken Watanabe's stellar work.

Ultimately, “The Creator” still comes through as a breath of fresh air in the modern blockbuster sphere that shows what director Edwards is capable of.

two, with more emphasis on gratuitous gore. However, the newest installment is just dull without any real shocking nature to it. None of the five shorts have anything to say about the 1980s or the sort of fetishization the decade has received in recent years. Nothing about the shorts makes them particularly '80s, aside from the aesthetic choices in the overarching story. This movie could be set in any decade, and it would change little. As stated before, this isn't exactly a scary movie but instead just bores, which is the worst thing you can do in this genre. Not one of the ideas is given the time to explore; it just shows up and then is done with. By the end of the movie, you just feel like you wasted time.

Essentially an acting showcase for everyone involved, this new adaptation of the classic story is like a play properly translated into film without losing its original touch. Each character is complex, with the actors delivering stellar performances to match each character's different shades of gray, namely in Jason Clarke and the late Lance Reddick's work, which commands your attention. All the while, Friedkin knows how to shoot and edit to ensure their performances have maximum impact. It's a film that demands your attention and will keep you engaged throughout. It's one last gift from a master of filmmaking.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain Shooting Into Your Hips, Back, and Leg (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain?

You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain.

You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints.

Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.

This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica.

Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
