HopeKids provides ongoing events and activities for families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition, such as cancer. Each month, they schedule a variety of sporting events, live performances, museum visits or other types of fun activities for the whole family.

Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 children cope with life-threatening medical conditions. These conditions affect the entire family with more than half of parents suffering from acute stress disorders and 80 perce of siblings having elevated levels of posttraumatic stress.

“We love attending HopeKids events now as a family,” Tabatha said.” Spending this quality time together is important while Raven continues treatment for a couple more years.”

Numerous studies show that hope can increase one’s overall ability to cope, and familial support in chronically ill children is vital. HopeKids understands they are not a cure for these illnesses, but they believe hope is a powerful medicine.

“Raven spent much of the time since her diagnosis in the hospital,” Tabatha said. “I had no idea how difficult it would be for her brothers, Roman and Taj. [HopeKids] provided a special evening for the two to spend time together that we could never have afforded with the increasing medical expenses.”

Shortly after joining HopeKids, Tabatha couldn’t believe how incredible it was to meet another family with a daughter near the same age as Raven and a similar diagnosis. The two families met through HopeKids’ online forum and made a point for the two girls to meet once Raven was out of the hospital.

Scott has more than 20 years of municipal legal experience and has served as Scottsdale’s deputy city attorney since 2006.

She began serving in the Scottsdale city attorney’s office in 2001, when she was hired as an assistant city attorney. In that capacity, she provided legal advice on planning and zoning matters and ligated hundreds of cases on behalf of the city before being promoted to the role of senior assis-

Scottsdale’s city attorney position has been vacant since Bruce Washburn retired earlier this year. Deputy City Attorney Joe Padilla has been serving as acting city attorney since June 2019 but was not a candidate for the position.

FOOTHILLS FOOD BANK & RESOURCE CENTER SEEKS ADOPT-A-FAMILY SPONSORS FOR FAMILIES FOOTHILLS FOOD BANK & RESOURCE CENTER SEEKS DONORS TO BRIGHTEN THE HOLIDAY SEASON FOR CHILDREN, FAMILIES AND SENIORS IN THE NORTHERN ARIZONA FOOTHILLS COMMUNITY AS PART OF THE FOOD BANK’S 17TH ANNUAL ADOPT-A-FAMILY PROGRAM. Foothills Food Bank is working with hundreds of individual donors as well as more than a dozen local organizations and churches to provide gifts, holiday meals and hope for those in crisis in the community.

According to Pam DiPietro, Executive Director for Foothills Food Bank, all families must be signed up by December 6, 2019. Individual donors as well as donor groups such as businesses, HOAs, churches, and schools, are encouraged to participate in this year’s Adopt-a-Family program. Interested donors determine the size of the family they are willing to adopt, then a family wish list is provided as a shopping guide. Monetary donations are also accepted to support the program. All gifts must be wrapped and delivered to Holland Community Center by December 12. Checks are payable to Foothills Food Bank. All gifts and donations are tax deductible according to tax laws. In 2018, the program served 393 families for a total of 1,226 individuals, with an additional 300 people added annually.

A. Most windows that were installed in new homes over the last 40 years in Arizona have aluminum frames.

Aluminum, as a material, is a conductor which means it actually helps heat flow into your home. The first step to eliminating the heat from your windows is getting rid of the aluminum.

With that in mind, there are three basic non-conductive frame materials for you to choose from; vinyl, vinyl/wood fiber composite or fiberglass. Both vinyl and vinyl/wood fiber composite are thermoplastics. Thermoplastics have the property of softening when heated.

This is hyper-intensified with high sun exposure and glass pressure weight usually associated with larger windows.

It’s not a matter of if, but when plasticbased frames will eventually sag, warp, and discolor. Fiberglass is a thermoset.

When it is heated or cured, it permanently becomes hard and rigid. Fiberglass is 8x stronger than vinyl and 3.5x stronger than vinyl/wood fiber composites. It’s really simple…fiberglass is engineered to take heat much better than plastic.

his time of the year, we stop to reflect on all the things that make us thankful. A roof over our head when so many are homeless, food in our stomachs when so many go hungry, and the love of friends and family when so many are alone. As parents, it’s so important to pass on our values to our children, and help them understand why we should be thankful for what we have, even when life has difficulties. There are many ways to encourage your kids to be thankful, but one of the best ways to show them why is by giving back to others who are in need.

Here are some ways that you and your family can embrace the spirit of giving thanks and give back to people who are less fortunate than you.

CCUSD WELCOMES 14 INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS & INTERNS

ave Creek Unified School District Governing Board members met 14 new international teachers and interns that teach Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese to preschool through 12th grade students. The recently arrived teachers introduced themselves, shared where they were from and their reflection on American students. Ms. Liffick, a teacher originally from China, said “My fourth graders at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School just amaze me every single day.” She teaches math and science in Chinese as well as Chinese language arts, as part of the Chinese immersion program. The three interns from France shared their initial experiences as they start their one year stay at Desert Sun Academy supporting the French immersion program and promoting French language and culture school wide. While international teachers come through different pathways that authorize working in the USA, interns come through the Embassy of France and Spain as competitive

awards given to exemplary schools.

As leaders in world language programming, CCUSD knows that leaving 12th grade with a bilingual/biliterate skillset will open doors for its students regardless of whether they work locally or on the global stage. A recent study

of 1,200 U.S. based employers confirmed this by noting that “56 percent of U.S. employers state that the need for bilingual workers in their field will increase” (leadwithlanguages.org/ report). HOW TO ENSURE YOU GET TOP DOLLAR IN A SELLER’S MARKET

elow is a graph of the “active” 85266 listing counts over the last five years (active listings are homes currently available to be purchased.) As you can see, active listings have been about 20% below average in Scottsdale North for almost all of 2019. Some communities are much lower than that!

Low supply puts a lot of stress on the market. Buyers who want to be in a community can’t find anything, and when something does come up, it is gone quickly. Sellers know they can sell their home, but they have the stress of how to price the home accurately. In this kind of market, comparable sales can be a confounding guide to choosing a price. A quick Google search on overpricing your home will reveal how destructive this error can be. So how do they pick the right price?

We are firm believers that given the opportunity, the market will always

find its level and set the appropriate price…but it has to be given the opportunity. A home in Terravita sold for at least $100,000 less than our buyers would have paid for the home, but they never got the chance. It was gone before they even knew it was listed.

For the market to function, all potential buyers must be aware that the home is available.

IS THERE A BETTER WAY? Our marketing solution is an all-out multimedia onslaught in advance of the home hitting the market, which leads to an event where all the buyers see the home all AT THE SAME TIME. It gives everyone an equal chance to vote on the value.

Here we have an advantage. We have been exclusively focusing on the Scottsdale North area for so long, that we have the systems in place to get our message heard. We have vast lists of prospective buyers, homeowners and agents to send eblast messages

to. We use this newspaper (see the back page) and our social media sites, as well as our long-established relationships with internet real estate websites like Zillow, Trulia, Redfin, etc. Maybe a story from this summer will illustrate it best…

I sold Cathy G. and her husband their home 20 some odd years ago, but now he is gone, and the house was just too much. Cathy called me because she had found a home she had to have, but she couldn’t handle owning two homes. I told her that we had two problems: in this market, sellers accepting contingent offers were very rare, which would make it hard for her to buy a home. And July was not an ideal month to sell her Scottsdale North home. But she wanted the home, so we went to work.

We began with a teaser announcement to our database before we even started the process. Her home was beautiful and always immaculate, so home prep was fast and complete in week one.

During week two, we assembled a

fantastic presentation that spotlighted all of her best-selling points and shaded the weaker ones. We then decided on a price that made me a bit uncomfortable, because I honestly had no idea how much interest we could generate in July. By the end of the week, we began the internet, social media, and email blitz. Wednesday of that week, the home went into the MLS, clarifying that there were to be no showings until the open house on Saturday, and all the offers would be reviewed on Sunday.

The open house was a zoo, and we accumulated multiple offers - most above list price. Ultimately, Cathy chose one $27,000 above her asking price, and it wasn’t even the highest offer! She was confident that the buyers would actually perform, and they allowed her to stay in her home for a couple of weeks after we closed escrow.

As you can see, our technique worked for Cathy, but this is certainly not the only solution – however through much trial and error over many years, this is the best we have found.

Here’s the point—you don’t have a Black Friday sale without a buildup of promotion. Apple has been pre-marketing iPhones successfully for years and turned this marketing approach into a work of art! If this technique is essential for smaller products like those, doesn’t it make sense for the most significant asset most of us own?

ucked into the open-air shopping center of The Summit at Scottsdale on Ashler Hills Drive and Scottsdale Road, Why Hello Modern Home offers shoppers a relaxing and inviting environment in which to enjoy the shopping experience, not stress about it! Opened just over a year ago in October 2018, Why Hello Modern Home is a decidedly “no-pressure” store that offers beautiful, unique and nearly one of a kind gift items and home accessories designed to make people feel good.

By Molly Cerreta Smith Why Hello is owned and operated by designer Suzanne Hueners, who is originally from Anchorage, Alaska. There the American Institute of Interior Design graduate built her interior design career while raising her children. Just more than a decade ago she and her husband became “snowbirds” in Arizona, and purchased a home in Cave Creek. The two spent time going back and forth between Arizona and Alaska before finding a permanent home in this area that they simply love.

While Why Hello is just in its infancy, the idea has been developing since Hueners was a child herself. “It was always in my mind that I would open a shop,” she says, revealing, “From the time my sister and I were little girls, we would dream about it.” Though Hueners went on to seek another career path, owning her own shop remained part of her vision. When “on the road” with her husband, who travels extensively for his work, Hueners says they would visit small towns across the country and she fell in love with the concept of Mainstreet USA. “When we’d go to all these small towns, we loved walking up and down the streets of the town and finding those boutiques that are just treasures - the ones that carry things you just can’t find everywhere,” she says.

Then about five to 10 years ago, Hueners began taking her visits through these shops to the next level and starting taking stock of the items she saw and fell in love with. “With purpose, I began looking at unique items that I’d like to have in my own store someday,” she says, adding she would buy some of these items, take them home and then research where it was made, where it came from and how she could connect with the company so that she could carry their products in her own store — one day.

As fate has a way of doing, it appeared out of nowhere about three years ago — in a tiny shop in Midland, Michigan. “By this time I was really

formulating my plan for opening my shop and I came across this beautiful print that read, ‘Why Hello,’” Hueners says. Naturally, she loved it so she bought it and took it back with her to hang in her own home. However, she just couldn’t find the right spot for it. “I kept moving it around the house to different places but none of them felt right,” she says.

Suddenly in the middle of one night she says she jolted up in bed with a revelation — the picture didn’t fit right in her home because it didn’t belong there, it belonged in her future shop! And so Why Hello Modern Home was born. However, Hueners still needed a location.

“I knew I wanted my shop to be in the Carefree area because we live there but also because it really has that neighborhood community small-town feel,” she says. She landed upon The Summit at Scottsdale center and says surrounding local tenants have been so welcoming and supportive.

Why Hello Modern Home features small furnishing, accent pieces and unique gift items that Hueners sources from all over the country (with a focus on buying USA-made products) and offers some lines from England, the Netherlands and Italy. “I just love things from Italy,” she says, adding she would like to incorporate more Italian-made item in her store.

She also works hard to source items that cannot simply be found on Amazon or online, but that are true treasures to add to any home.

As an interior designer, she says that moving into a new home, building one from the ground up or remodeling can feel so huge that when it comes to the end of the process — the decorating and design of the home, many people don’t know where to turn. “The furnishings and accessories might be considered the ‘little stuff,’” she says, “but those are really the parts that truly make a house feel like a home.” scottsdalenorthnews.com

She says that sometimes people just need an hour, while for others she can spend upwards of 12 hours helping them create a customized look for their home that fits their personalities and melds with what they already have.

Mostly, she wants Why Hello Modern Home to be a place where people feel good when they come in to shop. “When I was formulating ideas for the shop, I wanted to attract customers like me,” she says. “A majority of this area is an older demographic. They are people that are starting new chapters in their lives and many are not as comfortable shopping online. They still like to be able to shop the oldfashioned way — and look, feel and touch.”

She also emphasizes that she wants people to really

experience that small town spirit that is unique to the area when they come into her shop. “I have gotten some wonderful feedback from people that say they just love walking through the shop when they have had a hard day or just need to get their mind off things,” she says. “That’s why we never make people feel pressured to buy — we simply want them to enjoy the shopping experience and feel good when they leave here.”

HISTORY, NATURE, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

J

ust north of the Mexico border and a bit south of Phoenix you can find a part of the state that is steeped in history, beautiful terrain, and fascinating sights to visit. Southern Arizona is a great place for a weekend getaway, and an ideal location to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals heading to locations further north. The gateway to Southern Arizona is Tucson, which is a destination unto itself, but a little further south you can find many interesting small towns, national and state parks, historic sites, and local artists and wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorite Southern Arizona towns and the must-see places to visit when you go.

BENSON The first stop on our list is Benson, Arizona. A tiny town of about 5,000 people, Benson is the first major stop on the highway past Tucson. The town was founded as a railroad terminal and a stagecoach station, serving as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way through the southern part of Arizona. It’s historical status as a “pit stop” for tourists passing through remains to this day.

One of Benson’s key features, however, is that it is also the home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. This world-class Arizona State Park features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. The

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course, touring the caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance as tours book up quickly.

SIERRA VISTA A bit further down the road, past Kartchner Caverns on Highway 90, you’ll find the town of Sierra Vista.

Much closer to the border of Mexico, Sierra Vista is a larger community with a population of around 44,000. The Hummingbird Capital of the World, Sierra Vista has a more temperate climate than Phoenix, with beautiful mountain views, big skies, and tons of Old West history. As one of the key settings for many of the popular Joanna Brady novels by J. A. Jance, this idyllic area is a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors and hike one of the many Southern Arizona “sky islands.”

Sierra Vista is also adjacent to the historic U.S. Army base, Fort Huachuca. Constructed in 1877, Fort Huachuca was one of several forts established to protect southern Arizona against the legendarily ferocious Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo.

It was also headquarters of the famed 10th Calvary, also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” The fort is still an active Army base today, but you can

visit the historic district and see many of the notable Old West structures still standing.

TOMBSTONE One of the most well-known small towns in Southern Arizona is Tombstone, located down Highway 80, south of Benson. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. With a population of less than 1,500 people, Tombstone is still one of the most popular places for Arizona tourists to visit and experience a true taste of western history. Visitors can see a reenactment of the showdown at the O.K. Corral, visit Boot Hill Cemetery, or stop in the historic Rose Tree Inn Museum.

The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON

A police detective tries to figure out a series of similar murders that occur every nine years.

Combining sci-fi with more grounded genres like crime can lead to mixed results, but In the Shadow of the Moon is done in a way that is both creative and satisfying. Director Jim Mickle gives a unique look and feel to each decade the film is set. Boyd Holbrook gives one of his best performances as the lead, balancing obsession, sadness and determination in a great way. Michael C. Hall is also enjoyable as his brother-in-law who starts as the “jerk sibling” but slowly becomes more empathetic over time. A little more development behind the killer in question would have been ideal, however the film is still a satisfying piece of pulp with a new take on the genre. *NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.

A retiring assassin is on the run from an organization using a younger clone of himself to try to kill him.

Ang Lee gives us an exciting look as to what the future of cinema will be.

While I can’t speak for the high frame rate 3D (the viewing was in 2D), the de-aging work is well done. Aside from

one scene, the young Will Smith looks lifelike and highlights the real potential this technology has. The action is also a lot of fun. DP Dion Beebe, working with Lee, captures the intensity and high speed of each scene, including some great one takes. The script, however, is another story. It felt jumbled, thin and has clearly been rewritten multiple times by different screenwriters since the 90s. A good example of an interesting idea that is executed poorly.

In the Tall Grass is a prime example of why some stories should stay in written form. You can only have people walk into grass, wander around and scream for each other for so long before one becomes bored. If the characters have nothing beyond basic traits (concerned brother, mother-to-be, creepy kid, etc.), you have a bigger issue at hand. Great photography, including some interesting incorporations of CGI, can only get you so far. The film doesn’t even have much of the viciousness of the original novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Of the numerous King works that have yet to be adapted, this is one that was unneeded.

LOCAL VETERAN INTRODUCES PICKLEBALL IN VA PROGRAM

“I

am inspired by the courage of these men and women to overcome their challenges,” remarks North Scottsdale resident Frank Cali in speaking about a weekly veterans pickleball program at the Desert Ridge Marriott he has been leading.

Two years ago, Army veteran Cali noticed a poster on the wall of a Phoenix Veterans Medical Center waiting room. The striking poster featured a variety of sport activities highlighting “The Adaptive Sports Program.” Cali, who is a certified pickleball instructor and disable vet, was curious. Was pickleball included?

After contacting Johanna Avilez, coordinator of the VA program, and getting her endorsement for the inclusion of pickleball in the program, the Winfield vet went to work. First on the list was

locating a free pickleball venue. Brian Thorfinnson, the Desert Ridge Marriott Director of Tennis, didn’t hesitate and offered a court every Thursday morning from 9-11 a.m. with the support of the entire management team.

Rob Barnes, Director of Marketing at Selkirk Sports, a family-owned Idaho manufacturer of pickleball paddles, donated a dozen high performance paddles for the veteran’s group. Fellow local “pickler” friends provided the balls.

Cali’s credentials from the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association qualifies him to teach the rapidly growing sport for the Adaptive Sports Program. Local veterans were contacted by the VA and Cali was ready to begin except for one important teaching tool, a ball machine.

enhanced the learning experience for the vet.

The Vets began to arrive for the first six-week segment from all over the valley. One disabled veteran rides seven buses beginning at 6 a.m. to attend Cali’s pickleball instruction.

Many of the vets suffer from PTSD and were wounded during their enlistment. Some arrive in braces, others in wheelchairs, and many have had numerous surgeries. All came to learn and play. To date, nearly 80 area veterans have participated, many returning for every session.

The pickleball program recently completed its fourth six-week segment with four courts of veterans learning the game at the Marriott’s sports complex.

As the program expanded, Cali enlisted the help of fellow Winfield picklers Dave Boze, Bob Moore and Marshall Sussman. The next segment is scheduled for mid-fall.

In addition to offering local sports to veterans, the Adaptive Sports Program sponsors a yearly veterans’ event called the “National Senior Golden Age Games.” Last summer pickleball was included for the first time. The event took place in Anchorage, Alaska. Veterans interested in participating have their transportation costs covered by ASGP.

The ASP is facilitated and managed by the National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events Office (NVSP&SE).

The mission of the NVSP&SE office is to provide opportunities for Veterans to improve their independence, well-being, and quality of life through adaptive sports and therapeutic arts programs.

SCOTTSDALE PAINTER IS HIDDEN IN THE HILLS FEATURED ARTIST

cottsdale painter Sue Hunter’s mixed media collage painting, “All Tied Up,” featuring a rare scarlet Ibis, will grace the cover of the 23rd Annual Hidden in the Hills Artist

Studio Tour artist directory. An Ibis is a long-legged wading bird that inhabits wetlands, forests and plains.

A signature event of the non-profit Sonoran Arts League, Hidden in the Hills is Arizona’s largest and longestrunning artist studio tour. This year’s free, self-guided tour features 199 artists at 47 studio locations throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale during the last two weekends of November: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 22, 23 and 24 and November 29, 30 and December 1.

Over the years, the popular four-color, glossy artist directory has become a collectible among patrons. Hunter’s colorful, whimsical collage painting was among more than 75 pieces of diverse fine art entries submitted for consideration of the cover art during a juried selection process.

A native of Arkansas, Hunter moved to Arizona in 1960 where she worked at Honeywell for 20 years. She is a graduate of Western International University and has studied at Scottsdale Artists’ School. While she is influenced by famous impressionist artists Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, she has found her own unique style that, while impressionistic, is true to herself.

“I like to paint what I feel, not what I see,” Hunter said. “I start with a photo or I may be painting plein air, and at some point, my intuitive nature takes over and the painting takes on the character of the emotion of the image.”

This will be her 19th year participating in Hidden in the Hills. While she has been painting with acrylics, oils and watercolors for several decades, she has only been doing collage painting for two years.

“When I create collages, it’s for pure fun, with no rules,” Hunter said, adding that she uses acrylic paints, stamps, molding paste and objects, such as glass beads, feathers, eyeglasses, wire, embroidery thread, and other unique items.

Hunter said “All Tied Up” also includes a subtle message. “While creating it, I began to think of how so many items we discard end up in the environment, causing harm to the animals,” she said.

During Hidden in the Hills, Hunter will exhibit a variety of mixed media collage, oil and abstract paintings at Jane Boggs’ Studio #28 in Cave Creek. Art enthusiasts can download a map at www.HiddenInTheHills.org.

A plan was put in place to host a donation drive and event to gather at least 500 new and gently-used bras to help clothe women

Plans are underway to host the event on an annual basis every October which happens to be breast cancer awareness month. Next year’s lofty goal is 1,000!

I

am a HUGE fan of breakfast, so when asked to do this review, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was. New York Bagels ‘n Bialys has finally opened a north Scottsdale location, making this location lucky number three. NYBB is located at 8876 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd., Suite 100, on the northeast corner of Pinnacle Peak and Pima, right across from Mastro’s. The location is a little tucked back in the plaza but more than worth the time to find it.

If you are not already familiar with NYBB from their other locations, you will not disappointed when you walk in. The first thing that hits you is the pleasant smell of fresh cooked bagels. The décor is a modernesque version of the delis you hear about throughout NYC, including a city skyline stencil on the wall above the kitchen.

There is plenty of seating abound, including a private room which is available for larger or private parties.

If you love NY delis, this is not a place to be missed. Their menu includes more than two dozen types of bagels and more than a dozen varieties of bialys, as well as omelets, egg specials, breakfast burritos, lox, French toast, pancakes, waffles, blintzes and more! If you’re a lunch fan, their sandwiches are stuffed full of meats and cheeses; choose from your standard corned beef, pastrami, tuna salad, Italian grinders, triple deckers, chicken clubs and more. Rounding out the menu are burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese, salads and soups, assuring that there is something for everyone. Hot or cold, they’ve got you covered.

The only problem with a menu this exciting?

Narrowing down what to choose. I finally decided on the Leo - a mix of scrambled eggs, lox and sautéed onion. Add an Everything bagel to that and you’re in for breakfast heaven. The turnaround time was quick, and my eggs were cooked perfectly, not runny but not over cooked either. The lox were excellent – not too salty, but still flavorful and the sautéed onions lent the perfect flavor addition. I opted for the veggie cream cheese which, like the bagel itself, is made from scratch and in house. The bagel was toasted to a golden crisp, and perfectly chewy. They are not kidding when they say fresh.

Everything tasted like I had just made it myself… assuming I could learn to be an amazing cook and had everything delivered fresh to my home each day.

Would I make this a regular breakfast or lunch stop? H#%@ YEAH! Not only will it be a regular stop, I think it will be an every weekend stop. Catering is also a huge part of their business, so consider them for your office parties, holiday parties, birthdays, special dinners, and more. Need bagels in bulk? They have that covered as well.
