4.4 percent of children in Arizona live in extreme poverty. An additional 25 pe rcent live in lowincome families, families earning less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line. This means that about half of the children in our state struggle to have their basic needs met.

Live and Learn is working to end this epidemic of poverty. The Phoenix-based nonprofit empowers women to achieve financial self-sufficiency, enabling them to lift themselves out of poverty and create a brighter future for their children. Since 2012, t he organization has served adult women from the Phoenix-metro area whose lives have been affected by poverty, violence, and homelessness.

A mentor helps a woman recognize her own strengths, models positive life choices, offers her encouragement throughout her journey, and assists her with developing skills along the way. Mentors come from all walks of life and all economic and educational backgrounds to create a lasting impact for women, their children, and our community. ARIZONA AWARDED $20 MILLION TO COMBAT THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC ARIZONA WILL RECEIVE OVER $20 MILLION TO CONTINUE TO COMBAT THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC. The funding is provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is the first installment of a two-year grant for State Opioid Response (SOR) . AHCCCS, will administer the grant and work with other state agencies, health plans, and other community partners to address specific initiatives.

“Arizona has taken serious action in the last year to fight against the opioid epidemic in our state. Through coordinated efforts and bipartisan legislation, we’ve reduced the number of opioid prescriptions written, reduced the total number of pills dispensed and have provided significant new funding for treatment,” said Governor Ducey.

“We know this fight is far from over and this grant will help more Arizonans receive the support they need.”

“Opioid use disorder continues to be a public health crisis that affects families in all corners of our state,” said Dr. Sara Salek, AHCCCS chief medical officer. “SOR grant funding will allow state agencies and partners to continue to educate the public about prevention, treatment, and recovery techniques and increase access to evidence-based treatment and trauma-informed care.”

Specifically, this year’s funding will support initiatives that: • Increase access to medication-assisted treatment in both urban and rural areas of our state; • Increase distribution and public awareness of the overdose reversal medication, Naloxone; • Expand access to recovery support services including housing, peer support, and job search assistance • Reduce recidivism by creating supports for individuals who transition from correctional settings; • Enhance support for opioid-exposed

newborns and pregnant women who have opioid use disorder.

Grant-funded work will focus efforts on populations that have identified unmet needs, including individuals in rural and isolated areas; veterans, military service members and military families; pregnant women and parents with opioid use disorder; individuals experiencing homelessness; tribal populations; individuals who have experienced trauma, toxic stress or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) ; and individuals re-entering the community from correctional settings.

AHCCCS will distribute SOR funding through many community partners and state agencies, including but not limited to: Arizona Department of Health Services Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith, and Family; Arizona Department of Child Safety; Arizona Department of Corrections; Arizona State U niversity; Gila River Health Care; Pascua Yaqui

Tribe; Mercy Care Plan; Arizona Complete Health; Steward Health Choice Arizona; High Intensity Drug Trafficking Agency and the niversity of Arizona.

Highlighting the dangers of opioid abuse and Arizona’s fight against the epidemic, Governor Ducey issued a proclamation declaring September 16 through September 2 2 , 2 018 as Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week.

t’s the annual holiday shopping tradition that gets communities everywhere out in support of their favorite small businesses. This year, Small B usiness Saturday falls on November 2 4 and it is a great day to get to know and support your local Scottsdale North businesses.

Small B usiness Saturday is the one day every year set aside to support small businesses across the entire U nited States. The event was started

by American Express in 2 010 and is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Nestled in between B lack Friday and Cyber Monday, this event encourages consumers to get out and shop at their local neighborhood stores.

In 2 016, an estimated 112 million shoppers participated in the seventh annual Small B usiness Saturday by shopping at local shops, setting a new record for the event. The goal of Small B usiness Saturday is to remind consumers that they play a key role in

helping the small businesses in their community thrive and to encourage them to get out and shop & dine at local businesses.

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY PARTY

T

hanksgiving is just ahead of us and many employers are already stressing and focusing on end-of-year holiday parties for their staff. Why stressed? Simple; company parties involve a lot of planning, they’re expensive and due to the holidays, many employees have other commitments – so attendance is never a guarantee. However, that shouldn’t be a discouragement.

B elow are three simple reasons you should have a holiday party.

1. I t builds culture. Most companies in this day in age are working on establishing, growing or reinforcing a culture within. The holiday party is a fun and low-key way to demonstrate to staff members what you are really about. B ring out key elements of your company culture within the party and hone in on employee recognition.

TIPS FOR SNOWBIRDS COMING BACK TO ROOST

T

he Scottsdale North Snowbird habitat provides a lifestyle sanctuary for many of our out of state and out of country clients.

Large numbers of them will be returning to their winter nests over the coming months, and in an effort to make their transition as painless as possible here are some tips.

Water is a big issue for home maintenance, but it looms larger when you are away from your home for months at time. We encourage all of our Snowbird buyers to install a whole house water shutoff valve. This headache saver turns off all the water in the home but leaves the outside irrigation and the fire suppression intact.

Feed valves for toilets and sinks are particularly vulnerable to problems. I

have driven by many a vacant home in the summer to see water draining out of the garage or somewhere else, and then have to make that terrible call to the homeowner.

Here is a Snowbird Checklist put together by Mike Donley of the Donley Service Center: SN OWBI RDS CH E CK LI ST • Flush toilets to remove stagnant water and run water in sinks and showers for several minutes.

• Fill the garbage disposal with ice cubes followed by a cup of rock salt or vinegar. Turn on water and the disposal. The ice will break up rust or corrosion on the blades.

• Flush the water heater to remove sediment and other buildup inside the tank.

leaks,” Donley says. “As people plant winter grass, they use more water and leaks may be less obvious on their water bills.”

H OW TO CH E CK TOI LE TS Small leaks that you can’t see can waste 10,000 gallons a year.

• Check for leaks by adding a few drops of food coloring in the tank.

• Put the lid back on and do not flush.

• Wait 15 minutes. If the color appears in the bowl, you have a leak and it’s most likely the flush valve or flapper.

• Flapper problems are fairly common. If the chain is too tight, it’ll keep the flapper slightly open and water will leak out of the tank. If the flapper is broken, the water level in the tank will keep dropping and it will sound like the toilet is constantly flushing.

H OW TO CH E CK FAU CE TS • First, see if the spout is dripping.

If it is, you may need to tighten the handle’s adjusting ring.

• If that doesn’t work, you can shut off the water valves which are usually under the sink. Turn on the faucet to drain water from the line.

• Remove the screw cover on the faucet handle and use a screwdriver

to lift off the actual handle. If your faucet has a hex screw, you’ll need to use an Allen wrench to remove it.

• After lifting the handle you’ll see a cap and adjusting ring. If water is leaking, tighten the ring with pliers.

Check to see if that stopped the leak.

If not, you may need to replace the faucet’s seats and springs or call a professional.

DESERT MOUNTAIN UPDATING

ITS FIRST GOLF COURSE

I

t seems like it was just a few years ago when I was one of the fortunate few to walk with Jack Nicklaus as he played the Renegade golf course for the first time back in 1987. Now 32 years later, the course I’ve always felt to be the best of the bunch in Desert Mountain is being completely redone.

The “up close” opportunity to watch Nicklaus play in this intimate setting was really a sales event for Lyle Anderson. Lyle’s company had recently built the very successful Desert Highlands, which was an 800-acre community with one golf course that had set a new standard of excellence in lifestyle for Scottsdale North. This Jack Nicklaus affair I attended was introducing Lyle’s next project that was to have three golf courses and a community spread over 8,000 acres Desert Mountain.

The event, the property, and Jack Nicklaus were all incredibly impressive that day and the inducements to buy a homesite were powerful. As a sales incentive, the developer was including a charter membership program that included two golf memberships with each lot purchase, and no dues until the year 2000! But even with an offer that strong, it was still a monumental leap of faith to spend over $100,000 on a homesite located in the middle of nowhere, based on the hopes of a project that was several levels of magnitude beyond anyone’s experience at the time. Now jump back to future, and here is Desert

Mountain building its seventh golf course, and completely recreating their first best course!

The $13 million-dollar Renegade renovation started May 1st and should be completed and playable by first week of March 2019. Jack Nicklaus is doing a re-design of the entire course and says that it will “allow for more playing ability, and more fun for all skilled levels.” (The world’s most versatile course is getting more versatile!?) Beyond making the course more playable for everyone, one of the largest changes they are making is changing from Bermuda to Bent Grass which will extend the playing season. This change will enable them to avoid overseeding with winter grass and save a half million gallons of water per acre. Desert Mountain also intends to install cool season turf on two of its other courses, the new No. 7 that I wrote about in September, and eventually Chihuahua. They are able to use this turf because of their cooler climate at this higher elevation.

I have always said that Desert Mountain is to golfers what Disneyland is to kids, and as far I can tell it is only getting better.

A STAR IS BORN

A country singer reflects on his life and career after meeting a woman who quickly rises in fame.

The two leads of A Star Is Born surprised me. We all know that Bradley Cooper is a great actor, but this film shows that he really can sing. Meanwhile with Lady Gaga, she sings wonderfully of course, but absolutely kills it with her performance. The pair have amazing chemistry, and we get to see them at their lowest and their highest. I love the contrast in the ways their performances are shot, with Cooper’s grittier concert film-like style and Gaga’s larger production aesthetic.

Lastly, you can’t talk about this film and not mention the songs – all of which are amazing, especially Shallow.

VENOM

A former journalist is possessed by an alien parasite on the run from a megacorporation.

I’m really confused as to whether the filmmakers behind Venom were trying to make a serious sci-fi thriller film or a comedy.

To give you an idea on the tonal problems this film has, within just a few seconds we can go from Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom exchanging buddy comedy-like dialogue, to a Cronenberg-esque horror scene. Speaking of Hardy, his performance is absolutely bizarre, because Eddie Brock never acts like a real human. He basically just accepts the fact that he has a parasite controlling him and seems cool with what it can do. The same goes for most of the supporting cast, though Riz Ahmed does do a decent job with the little material he has to work with. For a start to a possible cinemat-

ic universe, this is very strange and makes me wonder what the producers are intending to do with it.

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS A young boy moves to his uncle’s house after the death of his parents, where he discovers that it has a mysterious past.

Compared to other YA films, House has much more to offer when it comes to its visuals. The production design is very creative and there is some creative visual comedy in the film. Plot wise, it hits the same beats as normal with other books, only this doesn’t take place in a future dystopia but rather the 1950s. Most of the performances are serviceable, but Jack Black, Cate Blanchett and Kyle MacLachlan are the standouts. Overall the film was enjoyable, but nothing memorable.

THE SISTERS BROTHERS

Two bounty hunter brothers search for a chemist that has created a revolutionary formula during the gold rush of the 1800s.

Somehow, I could not get into this, or at least not the main story despite the talents of John C. Riley and Joaquin Phoenix. I’m not sure if it was the pacing, the style or the all-around plot of their story, but something didn’t click. Thankfully, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed’s part of the story was much more exciting and interesting, mostly from the dialogue they share, and the filmmaking done in certain sections. There were several parts during the film that felt like they could have been cut out, especially in the last 20 minutes. There was simply an unengaging feel to the film overall, which made it a big disappointment for me.

7 Ways to Save for Retirement if You Divorce Later in Life BEWARE OF FLOOD DAMAGE 5 WHEN BUYING A USED VEHICLE

ecent storms have given Arizonans in the market for used cars even more reason to pay close attention to a vehicle’s condition and history, especially in private sales. Cars damaged by floodwaters such as those resulting from Hurricane Florence can sometimes find their way to Arizona to be sold.

If a vehicle is flood-damaged, the title should say “salvage” or “flood damage.” But scammers can and do fraudulently remove flood history from vehicle titles.

“We want to make sure potential buyers remain vigilant when looking at used vehicles and not sign anything until the vehicle has been checked over bumper to bumper,” said Willie Hall, detective sergeant with ADOT’s Office of Inspector General, which investigates fraud involving titles and vehicle sales. “Flood-damaged vehicles that have been repackaged and dressed up are a common scam after major weather events like what we’ve seen recently.”

Potential buyers should closely inspect vehicles and be prepared to walk away if things don’t smell right – quite literally in some cases.

• Check out all of the vehicle’s nooks and crannies. Look inside under the carpet and floor mats and examine the

trunk for dirt, silt and mold. Check under the dashboard and other hard-toreach places as well. Criminals usually don’t clean all of those places. Finally, take a good whiff in those areas. Water damage leaves a distinctive smell.

• Check the electrical and mechanical components. Water wreaks havoc on electrical systems, so check to see if any of those systems aren’t working quite right. Also check the engine for signs of rust or even random new parts. Get under the vehicle and check the suspension for water damage. Any of those things could be a sign that you’re in danger of buying a flooddamaged vehicle.

It’s always a good idea to have any used vehicle you’re looking at buying checked out by a trusted auto mechanic.

A vehicle identification number can be used to obtain the vehicle history through an online service that may charge a fee. This check can uncover a vehicle’s status as “salvage” or “nonrepairable,” as well as maintenance problems, collisions, insurance claims and titles issued in other states.

WORK AN EXTRA YEAR OR TWO BEFORE RETIRING. Every additional year you spend in the workforce means you have one more year to save for the retirement you want to have – and one less year to pay for. Many Americans are spending 20 to even 40 years in retirement, so the extra money you save can make a big difference on the amount you have to live on.

SECURE A NEW OR PART-TIME JOB. If you’re retired or ready to leave your current role, re-entering the workforce in another capacity could help you generate additional monthly income. Whether you’re pursuing a dream job, side gig or consulting work, keep in mind that earning an income in retirement could affect your taxes or government benefits.

DELAY CLAIMING SOCIAL SECURITY. Claiming Social Security benefits after divorce can be tricky. Bottom line: it’s worth exploring your options and choosing the best claiming strategy based on your full financial situation.

If your former spouse earned a higher income, you may be eligible to receive benefits based on his or her employment record starting at age 62. In most cases, you may qualify if you were married for at least 10 years and you are still single. If you remarried, check the Social Security website to see if you are eligible (SocialSecurity.gov). If you decide to claim benefits on your ex-spouse’s record, keep the following in mind: • You may claim benefits even if your former spouse is still working. To do so, you must be divorced for at least two years.

SAVE YOUR ALIMONY DOLLARS. Spousal support is more likely to be awarded when long-term marriages end. If you are awarded alimony as part of your divorce, consider using it to boost your retirement fund.

Alimony is often granted with conditions, including the possibility that the payments will stop if you remarry, so keep those in mind as you plan for your future.

KEEP YOUR RETIREMENT DOLLARS INVESTED. Amid a complex situation, it may be tempting to use your retirement savings to meet immediate financial needs. However, doing so could jeopardize retiring when and how you want to. Premature withdrawals from retirement accounts are an expensive short-term solution that triggers tax penalties and fees while reducing future retirement income.

SEEK ADVICE. Assemble a team of professionals who can provide guidance on how to best divide assets and plan for your future. If you have friends or family who have gone through a divorce, consider asking for a referral. Enlist an attorney who can help you navigate the legal system (keeping in mind laws vary by state), advocate for your interests and update your estate plan. Also, consult a financial advisor and tax advisor for advice on crafting your retirement strategy.

Emotional turmoil brought on by divorce can make it hard to prioritize your finances, but there’s never been a more important time to make sound decisions. Even if you’re eager to move forward with your life, take the time to evaluate your retirement plans thoroughly.

When you have significant assets or a complex estate to divvy up, there’s too much at stake to rush the process.
