Holland Center Presents 2nd Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser OVER THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 22-24, THE HOLLAND CENTER WILL CELEBRATE THE HALLOWEEN SEASON WITH ITS 2ND ANNUAL GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, this festive event will showcase over 1,000 whimsical, vibrantly colored glass pumpkins handmade by Gregory Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his unique, intricate designs. These one-of-a-kind works of art will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Holland Center, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing arts, education and community in the Desert Foothills region. ABOUT THE ARTIST Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood when his family’s frequent road trips would often include visits to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, Tomb explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. He occasionally rented glass studio time over the years and began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for worldrenowned glass maker Simon Pearce. In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” 4 • October 2021 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival, and the Scottsdale Artfest. For the next three years, he will serve as artist-in-residence for the Town of Johnsburg, N.Y., where he will facilitate classes for over 500 students each summer. In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flame-worked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Since 2013, he has taught glassblowing at the Bay Area Glass Institute, as well as through lessons from his own mobile studio. Tomb’s colorful autumnal creations celebrate the season and have been featured in museums and magazines around the country.

The Holland Center is located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. To learn more, visit hollandcenter.org or glasspumpkinpatchfundraiser.com. For sponsorship opportunities and more information about the Glass Pumpkin Patch, contact info@hollandcenter.org or call 480-488-1090.

THE HOLLAND CENTER As a former artist-in-residence at the Holland Center, Tomb is excited to share the joy and beauty of glass art with the Desert Foothills community. Located in North Scottsdale, the Holland Center is a unique partnership dedicated to celebrating arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need, and encouraging lifelong learning. Previously known as the Foothills Community Foundation, the Holland Center provides a diverse array of programs, including classes, fine art exhibits, and performing arts events. myhyperlocalnews.com

City of Scottsdale Seeks Feedback for Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park Project Scottsdale North residents can share their viewpoints online through mid-October THE ASHLER HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD PARK PROJECT HAS BEEN A HOT TOPIC IN SCOTTSDALE NORTH FOR YEARS. We recently talked to Nick Molinari, Scottsdale Parks & Recreation’s director, to see where the project is at and how the public can get involved. SNN: What is the Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park project? Molinari: The Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park project was included in Scottsdale’s 2019 Bond Election, which was approved by voters in November of 2019. The project was titled “Build a 17-Acre Neighborhood Park at Ashler Hills and 74th Way (Whisper Rock).” The description for the project, as published in the election material, was, “Build a 17-acre neighborhood park to include turf area for unscheduled recreation activities, multi-use lighted sport courts, a playground for ages 2-5, a restroom building and lighted parking area at Ashler Hills Drive and 74th Way.” The approved project budget is $6.1 million. Initial conceptual designs, based on the budget and voter approved project description, include lighted pickeball courts and a basketball court along the commercial border to the west of the project, two turf areas, a shaded playground, a restroom, and a lighted parking lot on the southwest end of the park. SNN: How can residents get involved and have their voices heard on this project? Molinari: We invite residents in the area to provide public input on the initial conceptual plans through a virtual public meeting. This online process includes a video presentation that provides a project overview, history, and location, initial concept images, FAQs, and a comment form that provides citizens and stakeholders an opportunity to provide input on the presented material. Locals can participate in the virtual public meeting by

Why Is This Park Important? “The town hall meetings we have had over the last couple of years have proven that there is so much demand in Scottsdale North for this park to be built,” says Scott Gaertner, Scottsdale North real estate expert and associate broker with The Scott Gaertner Group. “Scottsdale North is such a distinctive community that it is really important that this park reflect the uniqueness of our residents, so it’s vital for them to have their voices heard.” visiting ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “Ashler Hills.” The virtual open house will be available through midOctober. SNN: Once feedback is collected, what are the next steps? Molinari: Once the virtual public meeting is complete, the project team will gather the input that was provided by the public and evaluate how suggestions and input can be incorporated into the project design. Keep in mind that the overall project scope and budget of the future Ashler Hills Park was approved by Scottsdale voters, so the input we receive will impact the design of the park and not the size, scope, budget, or elements that were included in the narrative for the project in the 2019 bond election. After the project team has considered public input and the incorporation of feedback into the project design, the project will be presented for approval to the Parks & Recreation Commission, the Development Review Board, the Planning Commission, and ultimately, Scottsdale City Council.

Ling’s Wok Shop Opens at Hayden Peak Crossing in North Scottsdale LING & LOUIE’S ASIAN BAR AND GRILL, KNOWN FOR SERVING MODERN ASIAN CUISINE WITH AMERICAN FLAIR, INTRODUCED LING’S WOK SHOP—A NEW CONCEPT IN FAST CASUAL DINING COMBINED WITH A FULL-SERVICE DINING EXPERIENCE. The new eatery just opened at Hayden Peak Crossing on the Northeast corner of Thompson Peak Parkway and Hayden Road in Scottsdale. The new concept is the first of its kind in the Ling & Louie’s brand. “Ling & Louie’s is known for creating flavorful dishes using traditional Asian cooking techniques and ingredients in non-traditional ways,” says John Banquil, the company’s president and CEO. “At Ling’s Wok Shop, diners will enjoy our most popular menu items plus a host of bold new flavors from across Asia.” The combination of both counter-service and full-service dining service meets the needs of everyone, Banquil explains. During lunch, Ling’s Wok Shop operates as a fast-casual restaurant serving fast, consistent, and delicious menu options that are both healthy and convenient. During happy hour and dinner service, it

operates as a full-service restaurant, providing friendly and knowledgeable service as well as a full bar of handcrafted cocktails, expertly selected wines, and local beers. “At Ling’s Wok Shop, it’s all about the wok,” Banquil says. “Our wok-centered kitchen ensures that the food is fresh, clean, and healthy.” Among these dishes will be Ling’s Seafood Hot Pot, which features scallops, salmon and jumbo shrimp simmered in a green curry-coconut broth. The menu also includes clean, light and healthy wok-fired creations accentuated with the restaurant’s 15 signature sauces. Ling’s Wok shop is an evolution of the Ling & Louie’s brand and a model for the company’s growth, Banquil says. As part of this shift, the restaurant will include takeout and curbside pick-up options. Ling’s Wok Shop is now open at 20511 North Hayden Road, Suite 100. For more information, visit lingswok.shop or follow @lingswokshop on Facebook and Instagram.

Asset Protection for Your Heirs By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

was all his. Except it wasn’t his. Because he had filed bankruptcy, it all went to his bankruptcy trustee.

give that person unlimited access to spend how they please.

ecently a client asked whether his Revocable Living Trust (RLT) would protect his assets from his creditors. The answer is no. While the RLT is a great estate planning and probate avoidance tool, it is not an asset protection trust.

Giving the inheritance in trust could have protected the inheritance from the bankruptcy creditors and could have given him a fresh start.

TRUSTS CAN PROTECT THE INHERITANCE IN CASE OF YOUR BENEFICIARY’S DIVORCE OR DEATH My client liked the idea of the irrevocable trust and asked me about protecting his daughter’s inheritance from her husband. The marriage was rocky, and he was concerned about what would happen if she decided to divorce after getting her inheritance.

R

I told him that while his RLT didn’t protect him from his debts, we could structure the inheritance for his children to protect them – and not just from potential creditors. We do this by directing in the RLT that each beneficiary receives their share in their own irrevocable trust. TRUSTS CAN KEEP AN INHERITANCE OUT OF THE HANDS OF CREDITORS The beneficiaries’ trusts do give them asset protection. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. For instance, in 2008, Son started a business, but in the economic downturn, the business failed. He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing, Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It

TRUSTS CAN PROTECT AN IRRESPONSIBLE HEIR FROM HIMSELF AND STILL PROVIDE FOR HIS WELFARE My client mentioned that his son had addiction issues, and while he has been clean and sober for a while, he still had concerns.

I explained that if his daughter received her inheritance in trust, it could prevent her from losing part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the daughter and not her husband.

I told him the irrevocable trust can provide protection for beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well, whether due to addiction issues or just being bad with money. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust provides that the trustee can make discretionary distributions to the beneficiary for their health, education, maintenance, and support.

My client was very happy to be putting protections for his children in place to assure his hard-earned money would benefit them the way he hoped. If you are interested in estate planning, visit libbybanks. com or call 602-375-6752 for your free initial consultation.

hile the word “aloha” is traditionally used to greet someone, according to Scottsdale entrepreneur Spencer Leu, it also has a deeper meaning. “The deeper meaning of ‘aloha’ is peace, love and—most of all—compassion,” Leu shares. As the founder and owner of Aloha Timepieces—a luxury watch brand—the concept of compassion is deeply engrained in everything Leu does when it comes to his business. In fact, the company’s mission is, “To 16 • October 2021 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

inspire others to live with aloha while helping others with the profits generated.” A PERSONAL JOURNEY TO ALOHA Leu shares that he used to be a CFO of a corporate technology company. “I was blessed to be successful in my career, but I still wasn’t happy,” he explains. “I left my career to find happiness. After traveling the world and acquiring more experiences, I learned that compassion is one of the keys to happiness. You need to have compassion for yourself and others to be truly happy.”

During his travels, Leu also fell in love with timepieces and watch making. He laughs as he admits to “geeking out” over timepiece components and technology. In early 2018 he went on a mission to create his perfect watch—quite a feat since he had no experience in the watch industry before this. “Who would create a highquality Swiss-made timepiece during the smart watch revolution? Me,” he jokes. His first two variants of Aloha timepieces were ready in June 2019 after multiple revisions. With a goal of using his business to give back (or, in his own words, myhyperlocalnews.com

‘‘

My hope for customers who wear the watches is that they are inspired and reminded to live with compassion, and to give back to causes that matter to them. Through this business, I’m challenging myself to live like that as well.

“live aloha”), Leu utilizes his watches to raise funds for a variety of charitable organizations. Some examples of Aloha Timepieces giving back include: • A watch sold for $25,000 to raise funds for a girls’ school in Kenya. • The auction of a timepiece raised over $2,000 for FareStart, a nonprofit that helps with food, life skills, and job training. • Locally, he donated watches recently to raise funds for the Arizona chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the upcoming Easterseals Golf Classic, which benefits Southwest Human Development. All these donations have happened in a short timeframe as—while Aloha Timepieces entered the market in 2019—Leu put the business’ marketing and promotional efforts on hold through most of the pandemic. “My first professional, big industry show was supposed to take place in March 2020—but it was canceled due to the pandemic,” he shares. myhyperlocalnews.com

Now that the world is back to the “new normal,” Leu is hoping to get the Aloha brand of watches back in the public eye so that more customers can enjoy them, and he can use the profits to give back to other charitable causes. “My hope for customers who wear the watches is that they are inspired and reminded to live with compassion, and to give back to causes that matter to them,” he says. “Through this business, I’m challenging myself to live like that as well.”

ALOHA TIMEPIECES:

Quality Craftsmanship & Swiss-made Precision According to Leu, some highlights about Aloha watches that stand out include:

DESIGN: The designs are original, clean, and timeless. Every detail on the dial is calculated for balance and harmony of all the elements. The case was also designed for beauty, versatility, and comfort.

In the spirit of giving back, Leu is also a volunteer mentor at Arizona State University for the master’s program in innovation and venture development. “It’s all about helping others to grow and using how I’ve been blessed to connect with others and help push them forward.”

CRAFTSMANSHIP: Aloha Timepieces utilize the highest levels of finishing and components found in the highest quality Swiss-made timepieces.

With Aloha Timepieces taking off, and a full schedule of volunteering and giving back on his plate, did Leu find the happiness he was looking for? His answer: one thousand times “yes.” “Through the journey of starting and creating Aloha Timepieces, I have experienced the most joy that I have ever had in my life,” Leu says. “I’ve made friends across the globe and currently have customers in eight countries! And none of that would have been possible without launching this brand. Every day is amazing and I am so grateful. I am truly living the ‘aloha spirit’ and plan to continue to give back whenever and wherever I can.” To learn more about Aloha Timepieces, visit aloha.watch. You can also follow the brand on Facebook @alohawatches or Instagram @aloha.watch.

PRECISION: The brand utilizes the finest Swissmade movements manufactured by ETA and tune them to chronometer levels. These are the same movements found in timepieces made by many luxury Swiss watch brands.

Congress Can Help Heat Up Solar Jobs in Arizona

By Val Berechet, President of Sunsolar Solutions

W

ith more sunny days than any other state and a growing need for well-paying jobs, Arizona has a big opportunity to take center stage in solar industry. In order to make this a reality, we need our lawmakers to pass forward-thinking infrastructure legislation that will help solar companies like ours put more solar panels on more rooftops in the Valley and across the state. As a local, homegrown Arizona business, Sunsolar Solutions is eager to lead the way and is seeing real momentum. While many businesses had to tighten their belts and lay off workers over the past year, we grew from 28 employees to over 110 people and we just opened our third office in Yuma as well as a sales and training center in Peoria. We’ve helped over 7,000 Arizona households across our state switch to solar and benefit from affordable and reliable clean energy that also addresses climate change. As a result of those solar installations, we’ve helped Arizona reduce carbon emissions by 6.8 million metric tons, which is equivalent to planting 16.2 million trees. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Arizona now gets about 8% of its power from solar. The president realizes the potential for solar in Arizona and across the country and has set ambitious climate and job creation goals for the country to reach by 2035. However, for companies like ours to keep creating these jobs and installing the solar panels we need to achieve these targets, the solar industry must grow four times faster than we are today and expand our workforce to employ more than 900,000 Americans. Even though the solar industry is experiencing strong growth, on our current trajectory, we’re going to fall short of that goal. In order for us to keep creating jobs and providing clean energy savings

to Arizonans, our lawmakers need to take bold action to create longlasting growth for the solar industry in Arizona and across the country. Fortunately, this month, Congress is taking up critical infrastructure legislation that can make the urgent investments we need to promote solar energy in our state. Local solar companies need long-term stability to grow and sustain our businesses. Policies like the Solar Investment Tax Credit can encourage more solar energy installations by reducing taxes for Arizonans that go solar. Extending this policy for ten years gives businesses like ours the green light to hire more people to meet the demand, bringing new jobs to the Phoenix area. We also need more support to encourage domestic manufacturing so we can make more solar components here at home. Investing in solar production capacity will only lead to more employment in our state, and as we create these jobs, that means more opportunities to diversify our workforce and provide high-paying careers for women, people of color, and workers transitioning from the fossil fuel industry. That’s why it’s so critical for Congress to pass strong pro-solar legislation. We have an incredible opportunity to boost our economy, fight climate change, and create well-paying jobs for families in our state. Failing to pass these provisions in the upcoming infrastructure legislation could have catastrophic outcomes that means less prosperity in our state. And with frightening reports that indicate Phoenix might be unlivable by the end of the century due to extreme heat, we need to do everything we can to curb the impacts of the climate crisis. We urge Congress to pass infrastructure legislation that sets the country forward towards a bright clean energy future. With that support, Sunsolar Solutions is ready to help create a greater and greener Arizona. Contact Sunsolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

You may soon be limited from going solar! Act now before you are locked out! 18 • October 2021 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

Now Is the Perfect Time for a Home Warranty By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker

D

ue to Environment Protection Agency (EPA) changes that went into effect last year, it might be a good idea to buy a home warranty.

A home warranty is a service contract that can provide repair or replacement service on a home’s major components such as the furnace, air conditioner, plumbing, electrical systems, and roof. These typically run between $350-$550 a year with additional coverages like appliances for an additional $100 - $300. Many Scottsdale North homes are more than 20 years old now, and if you have not replaced the major systems, this might be a good idea anyway, but the new regulations make buying one through the proper company even more attractive.

EPA MANDATED R-22 REFRIGERANT PHASEOUT Since the 1950s, Freon (R-22) has been the industry standard for air conditioning refrigerant—a substance needed for an HVAC system to cool the air. Unfortunately, it’s also damaging to the environment. The EPA enacted an R-22 phaseout, and by 2020, Freon was illegal to produce or import. Refrigerant is expensive now, and it’s only getting pricier. In the simplest terms, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants like R-22 are gases that attract warm air from surrounding sources. Through the use of HVAC coils, the refrigerant compresses the warm air into liquid that is then released back into a gaseous state, causing a cooling effect. The most efficient refrigerants are those that take less pressure to compress the warm air into liquid and that have the highest heat absorption rate when returning to a gaseous state. Freon, or R-22, is

an efficient refrigerant, which is why it was the industry standard for so long.

As of 2010, the EPA prohibits the manufacture and installation of any new R-22 appliances. According to the R-22 phaseout schedule, effective last year, manufacturers can no longer produce new R-22 refrigerant. However, we can expect an ample inventory of new R-22. In addition, reclaimed or purified R-22 is approved for use until December 31, 2029. R-22 is not running out soon! In fact, reclaimed or purified R-22 should be available for HVAC repairs until at least 2025. HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOU? The greatest cost in repairing existing R-22 systems is in the price of R-22 itself. As the manufacturing of R-22 slows to convert to R-410A and aging systems escalate the demand, prices for R-22 refrigerant increase as well. Homeowners can expect to pay $125 or more per pound for R-22 if a repair is needed. DON’T WORRY—IT’S COVERED. At least one company, Old Republic Home Protection, has a home warranty plan that covers the cost of adding R-22 refrigerant when completing a covered air conditioning repair. While other home warranty companies may allow the use of cheaper alternative refrigerants in place of R-22, ORHP does not consider that a viable solution. They will also cover the conversion of an R-22 system to an R-410A system when deemed necessary during a covered repair. Without a home warranty, homeowners may pay more than $5,000 out of pocket to upgrade their R-22 HVAC to a newer R-410A system. As always, check the policies and read the fine print before you buy to see how they fit your individual needs. Old Republic is just one of the providers that will do this, but our clients have found they provide great value and they have been a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited business with an A+ rating for over 20 years. You can find them at orhp.com. Scott Gaertner is an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Northeast, who for the past 25+ years has helped more people to find their lifestyle niche in the Scottsdale North area than anyone else. He also contributes his thoughts on lifestyle interests in the area.

Community Invited to Help CCUSD Form Its Strategic Plan ven if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there,” according to the popular quote by Will Rogers. The Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) is revitalizing our strategic plan. This includes capturing the voice of our stakeholders as we identify our Beliefs, Vision, Mission, and Priorities that help drive our organization to success for our students and families. In this way, we can avoid standing still and being “run over” to better position ourselves to prepare students for happy and successful lives continuing to move into our 21st century world. Our BELIEFS will identify a common collection of convictions; ethical priorities that set apart and distinguish the district and the community. They are at the heart of our culture because they are guiding principles that drive us to success.

Our PRIORITIES will be descriptions of broad, system wide initiatives that are tied to the product of our analysis and are broken down into actionable strategies. We value our community and understand that you are a vital piece of the puzzle. As a school district, we partner with families, businesses, hospitals, churches, nonprofits, athletic organizations, civic leaders, and other organizations in helping to make our community a great place to live and raise children. For this reason, we ask for your ideas and contributions on what should be included in the development of the strategic plan. To participate, visit surveymonkey. com/r/8V72VXB to provide input into the strategic plan and make your voice heard through the community questionnaire. It takes an average of 10 minutes to complete. To learn more about CCUSD, visit ccusd93.org.

Our VISION will be a brief statement, widely held and easily understood that encompasses the purpose and direction of the school district. It captures the future we seek to create for students. The MISSION will be a statement that includes our purpose, function, and clientele. It explains our fundamental purpose as an organization and why we exist. myhyperlocalnews.com

Education BASIS Charter Schools Hosting Tours for Scottsdale Families

H

ave you wondered if a BASIS Charter School might be the right school for your child? As you plan school for next fall, now is the perfect time to find out if BASIS is the right fit for your family. BASIS Charter Schools are hosting tours throughout the months of October and November. Each tour is the perfect opportunity for families to learn more about BASIS, ask questions, and discover why BASIS Charter Schools consistently rank among the best schools in the nation. BASIS SCOTTSDALE LOCATIONS INCLUDE: • BASIS Scottsdale, located at 10400 N. 128th Street, serving grades 5-12 • BASIS Scottsdale Primary (E. Campus), located at 11440 N. 136th Street, serving grades K-4 • BASIS Scottsdale Primary (W. Campus), located at 7496 E. Tierra Buena Lane, serving grades K-4

According to BASIS Charter Schools, their curriculum is unique in several ways: • The curriculum is not centrally written. We just manage it. This means that we choose the subjects and set the standards for the scope and sequence of instruction, but we don’t hand teachers fully written lessons.

• Courses are taught by teachers who are experts in their content area, and they have the autonomy to present subject matter in their own creative and engaging ways. • We have a network of experienced mentor teachers— Subject Mentors—who are distributed throughout our schools to assist, advise, and support classroom teachers. • BASIS Charter School students take a rigorous suite of courses that most U.S. schools do not offer, including economics (in middle school), linguistics, engineering, classics (in middle school), and Mandarin (in primary school).

• We spiral key concepts and skills from kindergarten through high school, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and beyond. As students progress, the connections they make across subjects boost critical thinking skills and deeper understanding. For instance, students in grades 6–8 take biology, physics, and chemistry as stand-alone sciences every year. This structure of advancing and reinforcing content prepares students to excel in the AP courses for these subjects in high school. Six Questions to Help You Make Your Open Enrollment Selections Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA™, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®

I

n the fall, many employers offer an open enrollment period – a window of time to select your benefits package for the coming year. It’s easy to overlook this opportunity and maintain the status quo, but this could be a costly mistake given the significant role benefits play in your financial life. This year resolve to review your options with a fresh perspective. Consider the following six questions to get started:

1

Have you experienced a major life change recently? If you’re on the verge of having a child, recently had a child graduate from college and enter the workforce, or the job status of you or your spouse has changed, reconsider your health insurance options to accommodate your current situation. If you are experiencing or anticipating major health expenses, you might decide to choose a health plan with a lower deductible. Or perhaps you may decide you are better off paying a lower monthly premium with a higher deductible.

2

How do your employer’s benefits selections compare to those offered through your spouse’s employer? Employers change their offerings from time to time, so make it a priority to compare your options every year. If you’re considering changing healthcare providers or opting in for legal assistance, check to see if the professionals you currently work with are covered under the new plans. If not, consider the cost and whether you want to work with someone new as you make your decisions.

medical services) that are not covered by your health insurance.

4

Is there value in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)? Out-of-pocket costs not covered by insurance, ranging from deductibles and copays to prescription drugs, eyeglasses and dental work, can be reimbursed through an FSA. By directing pre-tax dollars into this account, you can reduce your net out-of-pocket costs. However, unlike HSAs, these dollars do not carry over from year to year. Any leftover money is lost, so you’ll want to plan in advance to determine an appropriate amount to save in the account.

5

Are there other benefits I should contemplate? Benefit options vary by employer. Depending on where you work, you might have the ability to enroll in benefits such as dental coverage, eye exams, legal assistance, term life insurance or other specific services that may be useful. Carefully weigh these options to see if they are cost effective.

6

What are your financial goals? Kick off open enrollment season by reviewing your financial goals. If you’re married, talk to your spouse and realign on key priorities for the next year. Having a clear vision can help you evaluate benefit options with your lifestyle and financial situation for the coming year at the forefront. If you would like additional support, consult a financial advisor before you finalize your enrollment form.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal

The Card Counter

MOVIE REVIEWS Malignant

Shang-Chi is a story about the scars that family leaves behind. Bolstered by Simu Liu and Tony Leung’s performances, the title character and his father Wenwu are at the heart of the film and deliver some of the best scenes from the film. When the film focuses on these themes, it’s great, but it staggers when it doesn’t. Its comedy particularly is grating, with most coming from Awkwafina’s supporting character that we are unfortunately forced to hang out with most of the movie. Action-wise it is better than previous films. Despite the usual problems with superhero movies, there’s still enough good in this film to make the watch worthwhile. In theaters. Kate

A figure from a woman’s past comes back and begins a murder spree, which she finds herself tangled into. Malignant is James Wan’s unapologetic love letter to horror. Combining the tones of classic Giallo films with underground 90s horror, we have a psychological/ slasher/slight body horror feature, which masterfully balances scares, excitement and even humor (if sometimes unintentional). With such striking visuals and effective gore, as well as an incredibly committed performance by Annabelle Wallis, Wan transports you into a demented world, and it’s a ride that will not stop until the end. It’s very much not for everyone, especially if you’re not familiar with the more specific parts of horror this review is referencing. But if you can get along with it, it’s a blast. In theaters.

An ex-marine, living a free life of poker playing to cope with a haunted past, finds himself having to face it once the son of a man he knew asks for his help in a dangerous plan. A quiet, patient film, like many of Paul Schrader’s previous films, The Card Counter is about a lonely man, content with his current existence, if still clearly hiding his pain. It’s the lead performance by Oscar Isaac that sells this movie. He subtly shows a range from pained to scary as he portrays William Tell. His character is so interesting that he actually overshadows the other characters, despite the best efforts of the other actors. It’s a very uncomfortable film with disturbing imagery and dark subjects, but if you can be able to stomach it, you will be rewarded. In theaters. Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings After ten years apart, a young man must fight against his father to save the world. A surprising work from Marvel,

posts, without any thought put into it. The actors try their best, but there’s only so much one can do with paper-thin characters like these. The neon drenched sights have become tiresome in this genre by now, offering nothing more than “Look at how cool this place is!”, instead of mood or tension. A potentially great film that can’t get past itself in its desire to be a John Wick clone. On Netflix.
