City News Glass Pumpkin Patch Benefitting Desert Foothills Theater Oct. 16 to 18 THE HOLLAND CENTER, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO ENHANCING ARTS, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY IN THE DESERT FOOTHILLS REGION, WILL CELEBRATE THE HALLOWEEN SEASON BY PRESENTING ITS INAUGURAL GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH OCTOBER 16-18 FROM 10 A.M. - 6 P.M. The event will feature more than 1,000 whimsical, vibrantly colored glass pumpkins handmade by Gregory Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his unique, intricate designs. The pumpkins will be available for purchase, and attendees will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on insight into the craft by participating in glassblowing classes. Proceeds from the Glass Pumpkin Patch will benefit the Desert Foothills Theater, which presents high-quality productions for the North Valley community. The Holland Center is currently seeking volunteers and sponsors for this fun, festive event.

Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood. On their frequent road trips, his family would often include visits to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, he explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. After occasionally renting glass studio time over the years, Tomb began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for world-renowned glass maker Simon Pearce. In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. He has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival, and the Scottsdale Artfest. In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flame-worked and coldworked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Since 2013 he has taught glassblowing

at the Bay Area Glass Institute, as well as through lessons from his own mobile studio. Greg’s glass pumpkins have been featured in museums and magazines around the country. As a current artist-inresidence at the Holland Center, Tomb is excited to share the joy and beauty of glass art with the Desert Foothills community. The Holland Center is a unique partnership dedicated to celebrating arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need, and encouraging lifelong learning. Formerly named the Foothills Community Foundation, the Holland Center provides a diverse array of programs, including classes, fine arts exhibits, and performing arts

through the Desert Foothills Theater, the beneficiary of the Glass Pumpkin Patch. As a community theater, the Desert Foothills Theater invites participation from people of all ages — from budding young artists cultivating their talents to senior citizens seeking a creative outlet in retirement. The Holland Center is located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. As a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, the Holland Center does not receive any funding from government entities and relies exclusively on the generosity of donors. To learn more about the Holland Center, visit HollandCenter. org. For sponsorship opportunities and more information about the Glass Pumpkin Patch event, contact info@ hollandcenter.org or call 480-488-1090.

2020 Foothills Empty Bowls Project Now Online Through October 16 THE 2020 FOOTHILLS EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT WILL BE HELD COMPLETELY ONLINE THIS FALL. While the art auction has been online for several years, this is the first time in 21 years that the bowls will also be offered online.

Both the art auction and bowl sale will be held on the Foothills Food Bank’s website, foothillsfoodbank.com, which is sponsored by Tech4Life Computers & Websites. Individuals can bid on the art and purchase bowls donated by members and friends of the Sonoran Arts League, a key sponsor of the Empty Bowls Project.

The Sonoran Arts League, a key supporter, is committed to advancing art and art education, with a special focus on mentoring youth with the belief that arts training helps develop the ability to focus and strengthens cognitive skills in young people. It offers a number of Youth Art programs for students K-12.

The Empty Bowls Project is one of the nonprofit’s key fundraisers. Foothills Food Bank provides emergency food, financial assistance and other life necessities and resources to individuals and families in the Desert Foothills, which encompasses a 180-square mile area that includes Black Canyon City, Cave Creek, Carefree, Anthem, Desert Hills, New River, north Scottsdale, Rio Verde and north Phoenix.

“We are excited to offer the art auction and bowl sale online so people can support this worthy cause and spend the time they need to bid on their favorite works of art and purchase as many bowls as they like,” says Carole Perry, founder of the event.

4 • October 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

The online event is live now and concludes on World Hunger Day: Friday, October 16 at 1 p.m.

“Bidders and buyers can participate 24 hours a day if they wish,” says Perry. “Each bowl comes with a gift certificate, redeemable between October 19 and 23, for a spaghetti meal at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral, also a key sponsor.” Bowl purchasers should note that they will be able to choose from a large selection of bowls when they pick up their bowl(s) at one of two locations between October 12 and 16, from 12-5 p.m., Perry adds. The locations will be announced on social media and the food bank’s website. Winning bids for the art auction will be announced after 1 p.m. on October 16, on the website. Directions for pick up of the art will be announced on social media and the food bank’s website as well. myhyperlocalnews.com

That’s really impactful.”

IN THE MIDST OF SEEING HOW PEOPLE HAVE BEEN IMPACTED ECONOMICALLY BY COVID-19, 12-YEAR-OLD NORTH PHOENIX RESIDENT PARI SINGH CAME UP WITH A PLAN TO HELP. Pairing her love of baking with her desire to make a positive difference, she created Pari’s Sweet Delights, an online cookie store whose proceeds benefit United Food Bank. “I have always loved helping people and giving back to others,” says Pari. “One of my favorite things to do is to bake. I have put these two things together and made it a quarantine project.” Pari launched her website, parissweetdelights.com, over the summer. In the first month, she sold about 360 cookies in batches of six or 12, raising $185 for United Food Bank. “What Pari is doing is so impressive and

United Food Bank provides food assistance to a 19,500-square-mile service area covering the East Valley and eastern Arizona. It has seen the need for food increase dramatically since the start of the COVID pandemic in March and expects the trend to continue well into next year. 4 Steps to Follow If Confronted with An Unexpected Early Retirement By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor Affinity Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC

E

arly retirement is a concept that, at one point in your working life, may have seemed like a dream. Yet many Americans who have retired early have done so not by choice, but because of circumstances out of their control. For some people, it may be an injury or an accident that has short-circuited their ability to keep working. For others, perhaps the economic conditions have required their employer to reduce its workforce or close entirely. If any of these describe your situation, you may be confronted with the urgent need to get your retirement finances in order. Here are four steps you should consider as you prepare for the onset of retirement:

#1 ASSESS ALL YOUR AVAILABLE ASSETS A starting point is to take inventory of all available assets. This will help you determine whether you really have enough money on hand to meet your income needs – not just for the immediate future, but throughout your retirement. If you have accounts with different financial institutions or retirement plans with previous employers, you may want to consolidate them with a single provider.

ongoing work, perhaps with the help of a professional career consultant. #3 CHECK INTO YOUR HEALTH CARE OPTIONS If you are 65 or older, you have the option to enroll in Medicare. If not, you’ll need to consider other options. See if your employer will consider extending health care coverage for a period of time, or you have an option to pay to maintain that coverage. Alternatively, if you are married, you may be able to be added to your spouse’s coverage. If those choices aren’t available, you can look into an individual health care policy, utilizing the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. #4 POSITION YOUR INVESTMENTS PROPERLY As you enter retirement, make sure your savings are appropriately invested. You may need to reduce your risk profile. If you are invested too aggressively, a sudden downturn in the markets could result in a major setback for your nest egg that may be difficult to overcome. Stocks should continue to be part of your asset mix. Keep in mind that money needed as income for the next two-to-three years should be held in relatively safe investments like cash or short-term bonds. The transition to retirement is one of the most important financial periods of your life. Be sure to call on the help of your financial advisor to guide you through this time.

#2 DETERMINE IF YOU STILL NEED OR WANT TO WORK Renee A. City News Pickleball Passion Inspires Scottsdale Company to Create Specialty Product AN OBSESSION WITH THE SPORT OF PICKLEBALL IS WHAT LED THE CO-OWNERS OF SCOTTSDALE-BASED JIGSAW HEALTH TO INTRODUCE THEIR NEWEST PRODUCT – PICKLEBALL COCKTAIL™. Husband and wife, Patrick Sullivan and Ashley Leroux, started playing pickleball in 2018, and quickly became addicted. They loved pickleball so much they began incorporating the sport into their family-owned nutrition, hydration and supplement business. Sullivan and Leroux secured sponsorships with seven of the world’s top 10 pickleball pros and even included the pros in the company’s “We Love Pickleball, Too” commercials. “Whether you’re a new player or a seasoned pro, you know cramps and dehydration can derail a pickleball game pretty quickly,” says Sullivan. “When my wife

and I began playing pickleball regularly, we learned firsthand that it can be a very physically demanding sport. Cramping is an especially common problem for pickleballers, which is why we designed our new Pickleball Cocktail™. It’s the perfect way for players to start the day so they can keep their muscles happy while playing ‘just one more game,’ five or six times.” Introduced in August, Pickleball Cocktail™ is a sugar-free, orange-flavored electrolyte powder containing 800 mg of potassium, roughly the equivalent of two bananas. It also includes DiMagnesium Malate, a patented, energizing form of magnesium, as well as sodium-chloride to keep pickleballers hydrated, energized and cramp-free, especially during long tournament days. “Most players don’t realize there are actually two types of muscle cramps,” adds Leroux. “If you start cramping during a game, that’s a sign that your body is low in potassium. If you cramp up in the middle of the night, that’s a sign your body is low in magnesium. Jigsaw’s Pickleball Cocktail™ addresses both of these concerns.” The sport of pickleball has seen a 650% increase in player numbers over the past seven years, according to the USA Pickleball Association, and boasts more than 3.3 million players worldwide. Legal Charitable Giving With Your Estate Plan By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

S

eptember was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. One of the charities I support, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels (amandahope.org), is an organization supporting children with cancer and their families in a variety of wonderful ways. Working with Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels this past month on their annual gala made me think about how we can give to charities when we do estate plans, benefitting the charity and giving us tax advantages. 1. GIFTS FROM A 401(K) OR TRADITIONAL IRA Your contributions to your 401(k) or IRA are pretax money. You or your individual beneficiary will pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. A charity, on the other hand, will not pay taxes if they are the beneficiary. If you are including a charity in your

estate plan, be sure to consider giving by making them your IRA or 401(k) beneficiary. 2. GIFTING YOUR REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS Another option for giving is to make a direct gift of all or part of your required minimum distributions to the charity. Individuals who are at that point of being required to take RMDs can give up to $100,000 from an IRA to a charity tax free. If you are already making gifts to a charity each year, this can be a way to benefit your charity to a greater extent and save yourself taxes. 3. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to give assets to an irrevocable trust, which provides income to an individual beneficiary for a period of time and gives the remainder of the assets to charity at the end of that time. The trust will permit a donor to claim an immediate charitable deduction for the value of the assets that will ultimately pass to the charity.

About Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels As I mentioned in my opening, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels assists children with cancer and their families. Imagine having a child with cancer – and then throw COVID-19 on top of it, maybe resulting in job loss. Your other children need more of your time, and now you have to socially distance yourself from many of your close friends and family who’ve been your support. It’s been really tough for these families. Amanda Hope has continued to serve them, but in these times can use more help. The Annual Gala, which is one of their biggest fundraisers, has moved to a primarily virtual event. To support them this year, I created Team “Be the Change” to raise money in connection with the virtual gala. If you are interested in making a donation, here is the link to the website: tinyurl.com/LBCancerhelp. Thank you in advance for your help. If you are interested in charitable planning for your estate, we are here to help. Call the Law Office of Libby Banks for an appointment to discuss your options at 602-375-6752.

Kids’ Corner

LET’S GET COOKING!

Teaching Kids How to Navigate the Kitchen By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

T

he holiday season is fast approaching, which makes this a great time of year to start giving your kids some practical life skills by helping you in the kitchen. Getting your kids involved in the holiday food preparation is a great way to bond and pass on your traditions for celebrating. BENEFITS OF COOKING WITH CHILDREN One of the biggest benefits to having your kids help you in the kitchen is that you are teaching them about food and nutrition. Learning about food helps you learn how to eat right, handle food safely, and be healthier. In fact, studies show that people who regularly eat meals prepared at home are more likely to be healthier – and happier. When you eat less sugar and avoid processed foods, you typically have more energy, a healthier immune system, and overall better mental health as a result. Research shows that people who eat home-cooked meals at least five or more days a week tend to live longer lives, too. Cooking with your kids is also a great way to help them grow and develop. From improving vocabulary, math, and fine motor skills, to teaching your kids critical life skills so they will be able to take care of themselves as adults, cooking is an important way to help kids to become healthier and more independent.

HELPING IN THE KITCHEN Kids get hands on learning while helping in the kitchen because, as you cook, you are actively teaching them by showing them what to do. Cooking improves vocabulary by labeling ingredients as you go, reading to understand and follow recipes and instructions, math by counting and measuring ingredients, and following directions by listening to your instruction. There are many ways for kids to help you in the kitchen. You can encourage your child’s interest in cooking by giving them different age-appropriate activities. Whether they stir batter, measure a cup of ingredients, knead dough, roll out cookies, or crack eggs, they are developing skills that will help them learn how to cook as they grow. Here are a few ideas to get your kids helping in the kitchen, no matter what age they are: • Let kids punch and knead dough for yeast breads • Have kids cream butter and sugar by squishing it with their hands • Allow kids to measure ingredients and pour them into the recipe with your guidance • Let your kids draw designs in extra flour (put down parchment or wax paper first) • Add food coloring to different recipes to help kids learn about colors and mixing

• Let your kids decorate cookies and cupcakes with frosting, sprinkles, candy, or other treats • Show your kids how to crimp the edges of a pie and let them do it for you • Put ingredients into a re-sealable bag and let your kid mix it with their hands • Ask kids to help you figure out how to double or half a recipe before measuring • Find no-bake recipes and help your kids walk through making the food from beginning to end The level of help in the kitchen should be based on your child’s age and ability. Younger kids have fun watching and playing, while older children want to be more hands on and participate in making the final product. You know your child best, so think about what they are ready for when you get ready cook. There are many resources, classes, and tips both online and in the Phoenix area to help make learning to cook fun and relevant to your children. Do a little homework, get out some of your favorite recipes, and then invite your kids to join you in the kitchen! Be sure to check out Ladybug’s Blog at ladybugsblog. com for more articles and recommendations for fun, educational and interesting things to do with kids everywhere in Arizona.

Some of the many benefits of cooking with your children include: • Building and enhancing fine motor skills • Encouraging kids to try new foods • Helping young children identify their senses of smell, taste, touch, sight, and hearing • Boosting confidence by learning new things and creating something to take pride in • Improving math ability by measuring, counting, and converting numbers • Improving reading comprehension skills by following recipes • Learning scientific concepts, like chemistry and experimentation • Increasing focus and attention on the task at hand • Inspiring creativity • Teaching life skills they will need as adults • Promoting healthy eating habits and understanding nutrition • Encouraging family bonding 12 • October 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

Education CCUSD Welcomes Students Back In-Person and Online By Debbi Burdick, Ed.D.

T

he Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) opened for in-person classes and welcomed back the majority of our students on September 8 after the Governing Board voted and reaffirmed the in person start date at their Monday, August 31 Governing Board Special Meeting. For parents who prefer their students to continue in online learning, a K-8 program named the Cave Creek Academy of Excellence is available through the school year, as well as similar online options at Cactus Shadows High School. A Logistics Plan on the CCUSD website outlines safety and cleaning protocols to help mitigate community spread of the pandemic, such as having all students and staff wearing masks in classrooms and whenever they are not able to physically distance outside of the classroom, as well as enhanced cleaning protocols for all classrooms and common areas. Our CCUSD schools and classrooms feel very different than they have in the past. Although the COVID-19 benchmarks in our CCUSD boundaries has greatly improved, we do not want to see a resurgence of infections, especially for our students, staff and families. Besides masking, elementary student groups remain with their cohort group throughout the school day. Although middle and high school students still change classrooms for their various subjects, desks are wiped down in between class periods. All students use their own materials instead of sharing materials and, when there is shared use of technology, the devices are wiped down in between use. Students may move through interior hallways in one direction; passing periods may be extended; and arrival

and dismissal of students is carefully orchestrated for fewer student interactions. Our CCUSD families are asked to assist us by going through a symptom checklist before sending their students off to school that includes checking for a fever, headache, sore throat, fatigue or muscle aches, to name a few. CCUSD provided one cloth mask for every student and students are required to wear their mask at school as well as bring their own school supplies and a filled water bottle. As we have all heard repeatedly, good hand hygiene is of the utmost importance. Students will be instructed to do frequent hand washing, especially before and after eating and throughout the school day. Hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes are available in each classroom and through the campuses. At the end of each school day, the classrooms, common areas and school buses will have enhanced cleaning by sanitation professionals to ready our schools for the upcoming school day. Although CCUSD has always prided itself on inviting our families and community into our schools, during the pandemic we hope our CCUSD shareholders will understand and respect that we will not allow any visitors on campus besides staff and essential personnel until the threat of community spread is gone. Sports have carefully resumed with restrictions. We continue to encourage use of virtual clubs and meetings and have postponed any student field trips until further notice. Despite all the restrictions, we are thrilled to see our students in person and allow them the personal interactions with staff and peers that we know they were missing. It is definitely a welcomed first step back to normalcy.

Boozy Breakfast

The Place to go on High Street for Breakfast, Brunch & Booze By Michelle Talsma Everson

I

f you’re looking for a local place with delicious drinks, superb food, and a great vibe, look no further than The Boozy Breakfast, located on High Street. “A proper breakfast/brunch eatery on High Street has been one of the most frequent requests over the past several years,” says Charles Ferguson, senior vice president at ScanlanKemperBard / High Street. “The opening of The Boozy Breakfast has successfully filled that void with their incredible menu and inviting décor. Add their unique drink menu to the mix and it’s become an instant hit with High Street and Desert Ridge area residents.”

toward the end of July—when restaurants were allowed to open again at limited capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. Since then, the unique eatery has quickly become a fan favorite for its breakfast and brunch options, not to mention its signature drinks, including espresso, juice and, of course, booze. “We are a scratch kitchen and one of our most popular dishes is the Dirty Bird; it’s our take

Clark Penney, managing partner at The Boozy Breakfast, says that the restaurant opened fairly quietly

on chicken and waffles with housemade waffles with a lightly spiced breaded chicken covered in our amazing sausage gravy with a spicy maple syrup on the side,” Penney says. “From crepes with sous vide pork belly to benedicts with smoked salmon, we have many unique twists on classic dishes.” Of course, patrons don’t come just for the eats. With a name like “Boozy,” there’s also an emphasis on the adult beverages.

“When it came to our cocktails they cater to a wide range of guests and to also live up to the Boozy name,” says owner Gererdo Moreno, Boozy’s executive chef and managing partner. “Each one of our mimosas comes loaded with some extra love such as our Peach Bellmosa is a classic orange mimosa with Deep Eddy Peach. Our Boozy Bloody Mary is a house batched infused vodka to compliment our scratch Bloody Mary mix for a perfect balance of heat and flavor. Our cocktails mimic the kitchen’s uniqueness and pair well together.” For those who have not been yet, the menu is split into breakfast, lunch and drinks categories. For breakfast, some options include creplettes, overnight waffles and French toast, benedicts, and more. There’s also an ample coffee menu. In the mood for lunchtime eats? Ask for the lunch menu, with a variety of salads, bowls, and paninis.

When it comes to delectable drinks, the drink menu has options upon options. Delight in a Booze Bloody, try out a mimosa (so many flavors!), enjoy a cold “brooze,” try a Boozy Beauty, or an About Last Night Mind Eraser. On the weekends, enjoy Keep ‘Em Coming Mimosas or an Arizona Light Lager Boozy Bucket. Both Penney and Moreno emphasize that it’s not just the food and drinks that bring diners in once and keep them coming back for more.

“What stands out about Boozy is not only the food and drinks and high energy environment, but the owner ‘Q’ is larger than life and the life of the party,” Penney shares. “He personally goes around and introduces himself and has fun with every table he can. The bright atmosphere and upbeat music always makes it feel like it’s time to brunch.” And, while the eatery has ‘breakfast’ in its name, you can have your favorite meal as long as the doors are open. “We definitely want people to know that even though our name is Boozy Breakfast, we are more like Boozy Brunch; you can get lunch at 7 a.m. and breakfast at 4 p.m.—whatever your heart desires,” Moreno says. Locals can join Boozy for any meal they like seven days a week. Located on

High Street (5450 E. High Street, to be exact), Boozy is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. “We want to be known for our welcoming service and spirit, fun environment, and whether it’s Saturday or Tuesday we are always ready for a brunch day party,” Moreno shares. “At Boozy, you don’t need to wait until the weekend to have an awesome brunch, we are ready for you every day.” For those with concerns about dining out during the current health crisis, both Moreno and Penney assure that the restaurant adheres to the strictest national and local health recommendations and requirements. “We follow strict COVID-19 guidelines,” Penney assures. “Our tables are spaced out well, even if every seat is filled, we are well below our half capacity limit, and all of the staff is temperature checked and always masked up.” For those who haven’t been yet, now is the perfect time to come in and try Boozy Breakfast.

Home Seven Things to Know About Electric Grills Before Buying One Contributed by BBQ Island

N

ot everyone lives in a place that will allow you to fire up the gas or charcoal grill. You might not have a big outdoor space or you might have restrictions against gas or charcoal. Electric grills are a great alternative.

1. POWER SOURCE The power source of an electric grill is obviously electricity. The nice part of this you don’t have to deal with bags of charcoal each time you want to fire up the grill. You don’t have to worry about propane tanks or making sure there is gas for the grill. You will need to use your electric grill close to where you can hook up to electricity. You will need to have access to a plug, indoors or outdoors, to heat the grill. 2. SIZE One nice feature of an electric grill is its size. They are smaller and more compact than a charcoal or gas grill. When looking at an electric grill, consider how much size you need. You can get an electric grill and you won’t feel like it is overkill to use it for one or two people.

3. SPACE NEEDED One nice feature of an electric grill is its compactness. Generally, they are smaller than other traditional grill types. Yet, they also vary in size from grill to grill. Consider where you might want to use your grill and how much space you have available. This will help guide you in choosing the best electric grill for you. 4. GETTING THE TRUE GRILL FLAVOR There are some who say you don’t get the same authentic grill flavor from an electric grill the way you might from a charcoal or gas grill. It might be one of the suggested downsides of the electric grill. Yet, many feel like the electric grill gives you the same great flavorful tastes as other grilling options. 5. EASE OF USE One big selling feature of an electric grill and one worth considering is how easy it is to use. There is no charcoal to arrange each time you want to use it. You don’t have to light charcoal, wait for it to get hot, and then work to maintain the temperature. 6. HEAT One thing to know about electric grills is that their temperature may peak and not get as hot as a gas

grill, for example, at its hottest. When you plan to grill on your electric grill, a smart plan is to plug it in before you start to prep whatever you are grilling. Like you might light another kind of grill, you want to turn this type on and let it build up its temperature. 7. TEMPERATURE GAUGE One smart feature to look for when shopping for an electric grill is a temperature gauge. It will tell you what temperature your grill is at and when it’s ready to begin grilling.

Real Estate

Growing Preference to More Open Environment Helps Scottsdale North Real Estate By Scott Gaertner

F

or years we read about how Baby Boomers in particular were loving the idea of urban living. Being close to absolutely everything seemed to be a trend that would change the dynamics of where buyers were heading and what kind of homes they wanted. Stories of this fad became so popular I began to wonder if it would hurt Scottsdale North home values because of the area’s more rural nature. But since the pandemic, there has been much talk around the possibility that Americans are feeling less enamored with the benefits of living in a large city and now may be longing for the open spaces that suburban and rural areas provide. Two new surveys seem to prove that point. In a recent Realtor Magazine article, they discussed the issue and addressed comments made by Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors (NAR): “While migration trends were toward urban centers before the pandemic, real estate thought leaders have predicted a suburban resurgence as home buyers seek more space for social distancing. Now

the data is supporting that theory. Coronavirus and work-from-home flexibility is sparking the trend reversal. More firsttime home buyers and minorities have also been looking to the suburbs for affordability.” NAR surveyed agents across the country asking them to best describe the locations where their clients are looking for homes (they could check multiple answers). Here are the results of the survey: • 47% suburban/subdivision • 39% rural area • 25% small town • 14% urban area/central city • 13% resort community/recreational area

There are many reasons I can think of not to live in one of our larger cities these days. But there are even more on why it makes sense to live in Scottsdale North. You have all the benefits of being away from the congestion and still being close enough whenever you feel like you need some larger city activities. Recent sales statistics see to bear this logic out also. The number of homes sold in the Northeast Valley is up 15.5% in August 2020 when compared to August 2019. That is almost three times higher than other sections of the Valley. (To learn more, search online for “Scottsdale North: Connecting Forgotten Territory.”)

According to real estate agents, there’s a strong preference for less populated locations such as suburban and rural areas. REAL ESTATE BROKERS AND OWNERS AGREE Zelman & Associates surveys brokers and owners of real estate firms for their monthly Real Estate Brokers Report. The last report revealed that 68% see either a ‘moderate’ or ‘significant’ shift to more suburban locations. Here are the results of the survey:

BOTTOM LINE No one knows if this will be a shortterm trend or an industry gamechanger. For now, there appears to be a migration to more open environments and that can only help Scottsdale North home values. “Hypnosis is a process that produces relaxation, the distraction of the conscious mind, heightened suggestibility, and increased awareness, allowing access to the subconscious mind through the imagination,” she says. “It also provides the ability to experience thoughts and images as real.” Through hypnosis, Michele can help clients to reprogram their conscious mind and change their perspective. “If you change your perspective, you can change your life,” she says. “Hypnotherapy is a simple and easy way to reprogram our subconscious mind to achieve the things you want to in your life or change your behavior in desired areas.” Michele explains further: “The brain is made up of two parts: the conscious mind and the subconscious mind…. Your conscious minds ‘sees’ a certain reality. However, your creative, subconscious mind lacks the ability to distinguish what is real from what is imagined. So your body is like a robot, responding to messages buried in the subconscious, and acting independently of what you may be consciously wanting to achieve. What hypnosis does is it busies, or relaxes the conscious mind, which temporarily gets the conscious filter out of the way to allow me to enter suggestions into your subconscious mind. It is not

only simple but an extremely relaxing experience.” Some things that Michele has helped clients address include addictions (such as smoking), weight loss, eating disorders, physical and emotional pain, relationship issues, realizing their dreams and aspirations, and much more. “Hypnotherapy and the work I do with clients goes to the heart of whatever the issue is,” Michele says. “It can be a total make over for your life if you allow it to be. Anything is possible.” So how does a hypnosis session work? “During a hypnosis session, you will be in control at all times. I cannot make you do anything that you would not otherwise do in a conscious state. Throughout the session you may drift in and out, hearing me consciously sometimes. Regardless, your subconscious mind will take in everything I say.” Michele says she enjoys her work and has been a coach all of her life. She sees pain as an opportunity for growth; “pain is inevitable, suffering is a choice.” She shares that her deepest satisfaction takes place when a client has an “ah hah!” moment and their life lights up. “Hypnosis works best when the client is committed and is ‘all in.’ If you surrender to the process it can do great things,” she says. “I see everyone’s greatness and know that all things are possible.” With COVID-19 safety precautions in mind, Michele is available for private in-person sessions, over Zoom, or the phone. Health Tips to Detect Breast Cancer Early By Dr. Pablo Prichard

B

reast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States with more than 250,000 diagnosed with an invasive form each year. The causes of breast cancer are complex and multifactorial, including genetic, hormone related, and environmental, but learning about potential risks and how to detect it early can prepare you to see warning signs when it is most treatable and curable. KNOW THE RISK FACTORS While most breast cancer cases can’t be linked to a specific cause, there are a few known risk factors to be aware of. • Age: As you get older, your risk of breast cancer increases. Most cases are found in women over the age of 50. However, we are seeing breast cancer more and more in younger women. • Personal History: If you have had breast cancer in the past, your chances of developing cancer again are higher.

• Family History: If a direct relative like a mother, sister or daughter has developed breast cancer, or other type of cancer, this increases your risk. • Genetic Factors: The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are genetic mutations that greatly increase the chance of developing breast cancer. There are other genes as well that increase your risk, so if you have a family history of breast cancer, genetic testing may be indicated. EARLY DETECTION IS KEY As with any cancer, early detection greatly increases the chance of beating cancer. There are a few different methods that, when done in combination, are the best tools to see early stages of cancer. Regularly examining your breast is a great place to start. While examining, look for any swelling, soreness, lumps or changes in the shape or size. Anything abnormal should be brought to your doctor’s attention for further examination. The most important findings are

hard, immobile masses, and indentations of the skin. Also examine yourself standing, laying, and leaning over forward, as skin retraction can be more prominent in one position vs. another. Mammograms are one of the most important screening methods for women over the age of 40 as it can detect signs of cancer up to two years before a tumor can be felt. The X-ray can see tiny white dots, or micro-calcifications, which can be a sign of breast cancer. Another technique that works well for younger women with more dense breasts or implants employs quantitative transmission ultrasound, also known as a QT Ultrasound. It provides a much clearer view and provides images more like an MRI. Women at high risk should consider yearly mammograms along with ultrasounds starting at 30. TECHNIQUES ARE IMPROVING If you do develop breast cancer, take heart that treatment technologies and

techniques have greatly advanced over the years. Even options for breast reconstruction have advanced like using your own tissue rather than a traditional implant which can improve the feel and shape of the breast. Community Local Jazz Vocalist Creates Innovative Program For Those Living with Dementia

A

s an advocate for the human’s adventurous and creative spirit through interactive expression and communication, and in response to the global COVID-19 virus’ impact on the community she serves, professional touring, vocal jazz musician Shannon Wallace, CDP has created the first-ever virtual and interactive live streaming and on-demand Music, Movement & Memory workshop program aimed to serve those of all ages living with all stages of dementia and cognitive impairment, along with their care partners. Each live and pre-recorded video features Wallace interacting with her virtual audience who then experiences full-body movement exercises; memory and hand-eye coordination games; problem-solving games (i.e. mathematics, geography, science and history); humor and interactive, reflective conversation, all set to music and/or rhythm. Subscribers can access this service at MusicalMemoryCare.com from most digital, streaming devices. The live streaming user-experience also includes an interactive chat component; while the growing library of pre-recorded videos also cover topics, ideas and concepts relevant to health, family, life, mindfulness, and overall well-being. “We are living in unprecedented times,” says Wallace. “As a result, I felt the need to create a technologically innovative and accessible way to support, stimulate

and engage those who have to tightly remain within the safety of their current and familiar environments. No matter the physical or mental ability or limitation, the program seeks to provide a shared sense of community and teamwork, evoking endless possibilities of emotional, mental, physical and verbal responses.” Two subscription levels are available: Individual Plan (dedicated to those aging in-place and /or in-home caregivers/ care partners to those aging in-place); and a Corporate Plan (dedicated to companies/organizations and property management operations serving those living independent and assisted lifestyles, as well as memory care/long term care). Wallace’s career spans more than 25 years in international music, marketing, television and public policy/advocacy. For the past five years, she has specialized in in-person, interactive music, movement and memory group workshops for those of all ages living with dementia/cognitive impairment and their care partners, as well as personal and customized 1:1 workshops. Entertainment The Scottsdale International Film Festival Goes Virtual

T

he Scottsdale International Film Festival (the Festival), an annual event that connects audiences with award-winning cinema from around the globe, will be held Friday, November 6 through Tuesday, November 10. This year’s festival will be virtual, giving moviegoers the opportunity to travel the world and enjoy cinema from the comfort and safety of their own homes. “Going virtual for our 2020 festival was not our original plan to celebrate our 20th anniversary, but the safety of our guests and the uncertainty of our world has made this an easy choice,” says Executive Director Amy Ettinger. “We’ve taken this opportunity to create a uniquely personalized film festival that not only lets you choose the films but now lets you choose when you want to watch them.”

Bites

Using innovative technologies, the virtual festival allows participants to easily build a customized schedule and offers them the opportunity to see every film on the roster. This year’s line-up will continue the quality schedule of films and programming festivalgoers have come to expect from the Festival. The virtual film festival will showcase 20 to 25 films from a variety of countries, originating from both first-time and seasoned filmmakers. The Festival encourages all attendees to bring their critical thinking skills and appreciation for the arts so they can immerse themselves into the world of cinema. With a selection of comedies, dramas, documentaries, thrillers and more, audiences will be sure to find their niche watching one, several, or all of the films in the festival schedule, according to the Festival. The

Festival’s programming details will be announced on Monday, October 5. Founded in 2001, Scottsdale International Film Festival is an annual destination event that celebrates humanity by sharing stories from diverse world filmmakers with admirers of domestic and foreign cinema in our community, sparking conversations that inform, educate and resonate with viewers, according to the organization. During its 20-year history, the Festival has presented more than 700 films – ranging from major Academy Award winners to undiscovered indie gems – to more than 100,000 attendees.
