USING TECHNOLOGY TO BRING HOPE AND HEALING IN THE WAKE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

I

n Arizona, one in four women have experienced domestic violence in their lifetime. Every 44 minutes, one or more children in our state witness domestic violence. These statistics are startling – If you’re a woman, think about your three closest confidantes. Chances are, one of them has experienced some level of physical, sexual, emotional, or financial abuse. Perhaps more.

Sadly, trauma is the common thread woven throughout many of these stories – including mine. A traumatic sexual assault at the age of 21 left me with damaged self-worth and a dangerous pattern of behaviors that led me to marry an abuser.

After nine years, I eventually got out of that marriage with my two precious children and moved them away so we could start a new life. But eight out of 10 women survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse report significant short- or long-term impacts such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I thought I was handling my situation in the best way I could by removing my children from it and protecting them. But what I wish I knew then was that my trauma was being passed on to my daughter and son without any outward signs. I also wish that were the end of my story.

Nine years after my divorce, my beautiful 13-year-old daughter McKenna completed suicide in her bedroom.

I was in the next room. And I found her two hours too late.

The trauma of that loss brought more pain that I thought was possible to bear in this lifetime. It led me to multiple suicide attempts of my own – all I wanted was to be with McKenna.

Ten years later, my son, Noah, died of a drug overdose.

I’ll never know whether it was accidental or on purpose.

That’s when I threw in the towel and made a sixth and final attempt at suicide in 2015. I ended up in the hospital, where I technically died twice before being revived.

Today, however, I am healthy. After decades of therapy, with temporary and only modest results, I was finally introduced to a unique and technology-driven solution that took six months to complete – and gave me back my life and my well-being.

I learned that my brain could be rewired and form healthy neuropathways that took me from hanging-bya-thread survival mode to thriving as an advocate for helping others in the depths of despair.

I want every woman domestic violence and sexual assault survivor out there to have access to this transformational program. That’s why I started Veronica’s Initiative to fund a research study with the hope of making this program readily available and affordable to any woman, anywhere. The one-year study of 100 women survivors is designed for publication, with oversight and results measured by PhD clinical research psychologists.

The goal is to make this program widely accepted and integrated into the mental health community, plus become part of everyone’s healthcare and insurance benefit package.

SCOTTSDALE WATER ISSUED ARIZONA’S FIRST PERMIT FOR DIRECT USE OF RECYCLED WATER

THE ADVANCED WATER TREATMENT PLANT AT THE SCOTTSDALE WATER CAMPUS RECENTLY BECAME THE STATE’S FIRST – AND ONE OF ONLY THREE IN THE NATION – PERMANENT WATER TREATMENT FACILITY PERMITTED TO TREAT RECYCLED WATER FOR POTABLE WATER USES. The groundbreaking permit effectively establishes a model for cities across Arizona to begin working towards reusing their precious water resources for future, long-term water sustainability.

“Scottsdale Water has always been at the forefront of water reuse innovation,” said Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian K. Biesemeyer. “We have been successfully operating our Advanced Water Treatment Plant to treat recycled water to ultrapure standards for over two decades. We are extremely proud to help not just Arizona cities, but communities worldwide, establish a path toward direct potable reuse and long-term water sustainability.”

The Advanced Water Treatment Plant at the Scottsdale Water Campus has been performing indirect potable reuse – recharging ultrapure water into the drinking water aquifer – for over 20 years.

The facility takes tertiary effluent from the city’s conventional water reclamation plant and further treats it through ozonation, membrane ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet photolysis. The AWT can treat up to 20 million gallons of water a day to a water quality standard that exceeds that of bottled water. Due primarily to the AWT, Scottsdale has recharged over 70 billion gallons into regional aquifers since 1988.

While the water produced by the AWT is considered ultrapure, up until 2018, there was a regulatory prohibition in Arizona against using recycled water for direct potable use. Last year, the State approved removing the prohibition, which allowed the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to permit water systems for direct potable reuse.

“As technology has advanced, so has our ability to monitor water reuse to the highest standards,” said Misael Cabrera, Director of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. “With the rule change, ADEQ can now permit water systems with the highest level of expertise – such as Scottsdale Water – to employ innovative approaches to ensure the quality and quantity of Arizona’s water supply today and into the future.”

WHAT’S NEXT? While Scottsdale has the technical ability to treat recycled water to a level exceeding drinking water quality standards, the city will not be sending recycled water into the drinking water system. Instead, Scottsdale will continue to meet customer needs through its diverse water supply portfolio, which includes using indirect potable reuse to recharge the aquifer for future beneficial use.

Other cities, however, are actively pursuing direct potable reuse as a long-term water source and Scottsdale’s executed permit from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality should help guide them down that path.

“Through aggressive aquifer recharge and our unique public-private partnership with local golf courses, Scottsdale is already maximizing the use of our collected wastewater,” explained Biesemeyer.

“We pursued the DPR permit for demonstration purposes and to help other water providers define their paths toward optimal water reuse.”

With the regulatory change in place and the DPR permit issued, the next step is addressing public perception about drinking recycled water.

“It can be a hurdle,” recognized Nicole Sherbert, Scottsdale Water’s Public Information Officer who is heading up Scottsdale’s efforts to normalize public perception about direct potable reuse. “Convincing people that water from their sinks, showers, washing machines and, yes, toilets, can be cleaned to ultrapure standards can be a tough sell, but through education and transparency, I’m confident we’ll get there.” The first step for Scottsdale in moving that public perception needle is to introduce the recycled water through something consumers might find initially more palatable. Namely…Beer!

This November 8 and 9, Scottsdale Water and Canal Convergence – the city’s premier arts and education event – will host the world’s first beer festival featuring only craft beers brewed with recycled water.

The One Water Brewing Showcase at Canal Convergence will spotlight ten Valley breweries who will be crafting and serving beer made from water delivered directly from Scottsdale’s Advanced Water Treatment Plant.

“Uncle Bear’s is thrilled to be part of the One Water Brewing Showcase because water is so important to beer!” said Andrew Bauman, Head Brewer for Uncle Bear’s Brewery in Gilbert. “Although all

water is recycled water, we’re impressed by the incredible system Scottsdale has implemented to make the cleanest water possible. The future of water for Arizona, and for the next generations, is happening right now and it’s awesome to get to be a part of this project.”

The One Water Brewing Showcase is free to attend and will feature five breweries each night. Guests will be able to purchase individual full-size draft beers or sampler flights to taste all five.

In addition to the beer showcase, Scottsdale holds a controlled number of educational events at the Scottsdale Water Campus throughout the year and visitors to the facility will now be able to taste the purified water directly from the source as part of future Advanced Water Treatment Plant tours.

“This is a major step forward for the future of water treatment and supply,” concluded Biesemeyer. “By leading the efforts to not only implement the technology for DPR, but also to influence both regulatory implementation and public perception, Scottsdale Water is continuing to exemplify our vision of water sustainability through stewardship, innovation and people.”

CYCLISTS GEAR UP TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE 16TH ANNUAL TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE BENEFITTING THE MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANCY WILL HAVE NEARLY 2,000 CYCLISTS RIDING ITS 30- AND 70-MILE COURSES Hosted by DC Ranch, the annual Tour de Scottsdale features a 70-mile and 30-mile ride with up to 2,000 cyclists gathering on Market Street. The event begins at 6:30 a.m. on October 13 and allows riders to enjoy spectacular scenery while supporting the legacy and protecting the future of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The event beneficiary is the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization that protects and promotes the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in North Scottsdale. Now in its 16th year, the Tour de Scottsdale donates 100 percent of sponsorship proceeds and a portion of registration fees to the Conservancy and has raised over $600,000 to date. Lori Calhoun from the Conservancy says, “With the money raised from the Tour we can develop and grow our education programs. The programs both in and out of the classroom will reach thousands of students and

preserve users. Some of whom might not otherwise have the chance to develop a knowledge and love for the vast and marvelous makeup of the Sonoran Desert in which they live.”

Family and friends will cheer on the riders and enjoy the fun on Market Street in DC Ranch. Live music by the 70’s All Stars hits the stage at 8 a.m. as riders return. New this year, a beer garden sponsored by Hensley will be the perfect spot to sip a cold brew with proceeds benefitting the Conservancy. Local merchants and restaurants will also have special promotions. Riders can enjoy stretch and recovery areas, chair massages and lounge spaces to unwind.

ONE YEAR AGO, THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE HAD ITS FIRST OPEN MEETING TO DISCUSS BUILDING A PARK ON A PROPERTY AT ASHLER HILLS DRIVE AND 74TH STREET CALLED SEVANO PARK. About 200 very interested residents showed up at that meeting to make their voices heard, and we thought you would like an update on what’s happening now.

Since that time, the Scottsdale City Council unanimously agreed to seek voter approval to issue bonds for 58 community projects totaling $319 million. Sevano Park is one of those 58 projects, and it was allotted a budget of just over $6 million.

The 58 projects will appear on the ballot grouped into three specific questions for voters to approve as initiatives: (1) parks, recreation, and senior services; (2) community spaces and infrastructure; and (3) public safety and technology.

Murphy mentioned that the city did not believe that there was enough room to build both pickleball courts and a dog park, so the next “off-leash” dog park will be located further south, off Thompson Peak Road. There is a $4.6 million budget for the dog park. For those of you interested in the dog park, Murphy said that nothing is cast in stone right now and that there will be more public meetings to discuss the subject.

Pumpkin Patch Season Has Arrived!

TIPS FOR PUMPKIN PATCHING IN YOUR FAVORITE ARIZONA PATCH OF PUMPKINS

T

emperatures are slowly starting to drop, leaves are beginning to change in Northern Arizona, and everywhere you look are pumpkin patches, fall festivals, haunted houses, costumes, and spooky decorations. Autumn is officially arriving in Arizona and one of our favorite ways to celebrate and enjoy the season is to visit one of our many local pumpkin patches.

We’re sharing our inside knowledge and some of our best tips for visiting pumpkin patches here in the Sonoran Desert.

TIP 1: REMEMBER YOU ARE IN THE DESERT Many people who currently live in the Valley of the Sun are transplants from other parts of the country, so our most important tip for anyone planning to make the trek to a local pumpkin patch is this: remember that you’re still the desert and that it’s still hot outside! Nope, you’re not in Kansas anymore – or Minnesota, or Wisconsin, or California, or Illinois, or Pennsylvania. Remember that even though fall is in the air and you’re in full pumpkin mode, Phoenix is still a desert. And it’s still hot. It is almost guaranteed to still be hot every afternoon until the week after Halloween, so plan accordingly.

TIP 2: RESEARCH THE VENUE Take time to find the pumpkin patch that will work best for your family. Consider how long you are willing to sit in the car, what activities your kids will enjoy, and how much different pumpkin patches cost. All of them are fun, but there are ranges of activities and price points. If you are all about taking a day trip, plan on heading to a different part of the Valley or outside of Maricopa County. There are some great pumpkin patches in

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier the Tucson and Prescott areas, for example. If you are looking for just a few hours of fun, try something in town a little closer to home.

Generally, pumpkin patches have a somewhat common range of activities for most ages, but some specialize in adult fun too. Watch for extras like haunted houses, music venues, or even beer gardens. In this day and age, most pumpkin patches have a good website or at least a Facebook page. Check out their information before you go to find distance and directions, hours, and prices, as well as to check out what kinds of activities are available on-site. A little planning ahead will make your trip much more enjoyable.

TIP 3: GO EARLY Temperatures are usually quite a bit cooler in the morning, which makes it a great time to get outside and enjoy autumn weather. Typically, the crowds at a pumpkin patch are smaller right when they open, so the lines and wait times are shorter. It’s also easier to maneuver small kids around before lunchtime, when they get hungry. I recommend arriving as early as possible to make the trip more enjoyable for the whole family.

TIP 4: TAKE WATER It’s the desert and you are outside in the sunshine.

Even in cooler temperatures, you need to be sure to drink tons of water. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your beverages at home or trying to rely on food and drink stands at the pumpkin patch.

Sometimes the costs are high, and sometimes they just don’t sell what you need. Be sure bring enough water for everyone in your group, to reduce the risk of running out while you’re there.

It’s always best to be prepared for the trip ahead of time, especially in the desert.

TIP 5: DRESS APPROPRIATELY Whether the venue is a farm or a working ranch, the pumpkin patch will be sitting in an outdoor desert area that is not flip-flop friendly (think dirt, rocks, scrub grass, and cactus). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, socks, a hat, sunscreen, and layer comfortable lightweight clothing. I recommend the type of clothes you would wear hiking as the environment is the same, but cowboy gear is great too. Nothing beats a good pair of cowboy boots at the ranch!

TIP 6: BRING CASH In our experience, there is a really high likelihood of needing cash. Most pumpkin patches are small family farms or ranches, so credit card readers are not always readily available. That has changed gradually over the years, but it’s still best to bring some cash for your pumpkins and snacks, just to be on the safe side. Also, remember that most pumpkin patches are located on the outskirts of town and away from stores and strip malls, so an ATM machine may be a little tough to find.

Visiting a pumpkin patch once fall arrives is a special treat, full of great memories and well worth the trip. he Foothills Community Foundation, located at 34250 North 60th Street in North Scottsdale, serves as the non-profit 501c3 umbrella for a handful of separate organizations they work with and help develop as independent community programs.

“We are simply the guiding force,” says Jennifer Rosvall, Executive Director of the Foothills Community Foundation. “They all operate independently.”

Kachina’s Place, a horse therapy program for at-risk kids and adults which uses rescued and trained horses to form partnerships between humans and horses to generate healing and growth for those with physical, cognitive and emotional limitations.

The Desert Awareness Committee, which serves as a community resource that advocates for the Sonoran Desert and educates residents and visitors to help them understand the importance of conserving and preserving this diverse desert along with its plants, animals, water and wildlife.

Desert Foothills Theater, which invites theatre participation from all community members from six to 106 in various capacities including onstage performers, backstage hands, classes, volunteers, camps and more.

Partners in Education, a committee

of supporters including local residents, parents, retired educators and business community members that advocate for students to ensure they have access to education enrichment programs as well as support innovations in teaching and learning within the Desert Foothills community.

The Holland Community Center, a 100 percent privately funded community center focusing on lifelong learning that serves the surrounding communities and offers classes and activities to the public.

The Holland Center is part of the Black Mountain Campus, a partnership among the Foothills Community Foundation, the Desert Foothills YMCA and the branch campus of Paradise Valley Community College, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this October with an event on Saturday, October 12. From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the public can enjoy onsite food trucks, carnivals, entertainment and more.

“We’re really focused on rejuvenating the community center and helping people use it as a hub for the entire community,” says Rosvall. “This year is the rebirth of the center. We are gung-ho on bringing it back to life and we hope that people come out and experience all the amazing activities and events that are available and see what a gorgeous, yet underused, facility it is.” The Center offers a plethora of activities and events that reach all age groups from children to seniors.

Always a popular program, the Desert Foothills Theater attracts more than 10,000 attendees each year, employs more than 90 artists and technicians and educates more than 300 children and adults in all areas of theater.

Performances put on by Desert Foothills Theater includes local actors ages eight to eighty. In addition to becoming exposed to the performing arts, students benefit from a wide range of classes, workshops and camps that help them build not only performance skills but also important social, leadership and development skills such as problem solving, team work, critical thinking and selfconfidence.

The Partners in Education program works to enhance the lives of children and their families by making needsbased grants through Education and Community Services to local schools in support of crucial enrichment

Kachina’s Place programs based on their needs and abilities. This special program offers therapeutic riding with lessons that provide physical, psychological, educational and social benefits via the skills of horsemanship.

It also incorporates the groundwork of caring for horses, which teaches responsibility and helps participants develop positive relationships.

Carriage driving is also offered, giving participants an alternative way to experience interacting with and controlling a horse. This is ideal for those that may be unable to ride a horse for various reasons, but it still offers the engagement of teamwork and building communication skills as the driver works in tandem with the horse to steer the carriage and control speed. Benefits of the Kachina Place programs include balance, posture, muscle tone, coordination, fine and gross motor skill development, selfesteem and self-control, independence, concentration, perseverance, respect and more.

ENCHANTED PUMPKIN GARDEN RETURNS TO THE CAREFREE DESERT GARDENS HALLOWEEN ONCE AGAIN INVADES THE TOWN OF CAREFREE IN THE FORM OF WHIMSICAL PUMPKIN CARVINGS FROM MASTER SCULPTOR RAY VILLAFANE AND THE VILLAFANE STUDIOS TEAM FOR A FIFTH INCREDIBLE YEAR. The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden, a one-of-a-kind fall festival celebrating the magic of the season, takes place October 18–27, with the amazing artistry of Villafane Studios on display throughout the four-acre Carefree Desert Gardens in downtown Carefree.

A new bride discovers that her groom’s family has a dark secret behind a family ritual.

What I love about Ready or Not is that it gets tons of laughs, not just because of its massive amount of gore or swearing, but because of its staging and slapsticklike comedy. The chaotic and relentless feeling, combined with the editing, gives you the feeling that you’re right there along with Grace (Samara Weaving).

Weaving proves to be a true badass and manages to be a standout in a cast full of incredible performances, including Adam Brody, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell. Ready or Not’s only real issue is that it isn’t a particularly scary film…a difficult thing to swallow in a movie meant to be in the horror genre. The great cast, clever screenplay and well played direction keeps you entertained, nonetheless.

THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON A man with down syndrome runs from his home with a drifter to become a wrestler.

Sweetness is how one can describe The Peanut Butter Falcon - like the lightest Terrence Malick film never made.

Peanut Butter Falcon flows freely from scene to scene, showing our characters taking in their surroundings and simply loving life. Zack Gottasgen is absolutely incredible here. This may also be Shia LaBeouf’s best performance in years and confirms that he can be a superb actor.

The southern-inspired score brings a feeling of authenticity to the film. This film is best described as beautiful.

AD ASTRA

An astronaut travels to the furthest areas of the solar system to find his father, who may be causing electrical signals that could wipe out life in the universe.

Ad Astra will not be for everyone. It takes its time and is not anywhere near as action packed as the trailers suggest. The performances are quiet and at times may come off as bland. However, those quiet performances leant themselves to the beautiful subtlety of the film. It subverts a typical space journey movie, providing an intimate human drama about loyalty and our beliefs versus reality. Combine a gorgeous score by Max Richter and Lorne Balfe with Hoyte van Hoytema’s beautiful cinematography, and Ad Astra is a classic in the making.

IT: CHAPTER TWO

27 years after the first film, a now-grown Losers Club returns to Derry to put an end to the returned maniacal clown.

Chapter Two shows that Andy Muschietti is a very exciting filmmaker when given free rein to do whatever he desires. The designs, locations and situations show him to be one of our more creative horror filmmakers of the day. He has a great eye for casting with the adult actors, particularly Bill Hader and James Ransone. “It’s” biggest problem is that, despite the time change and supposedly more mature themes, the movie feels no different than the previous film. We see the same humor and same style; the only real change is that now they’re adults. There seems to be a little less charm here than in the previous film. Chapter Two is visually a decent film, just a bit…. lacking in soul.

The Four Stages of Transition (part 2)

T

he Stages of Transition can offer insight to our behavior during uncertain periods. The first stage of transition is Anticipation. Stage 2 is Ending.

Ending is the actual event that we experience, such as a move, a divorce, death of a family member, or perhaps a retirement. It is the time in which the experience we anticipated or expected finally transpires. There is no going back.

Ending can be a period of great emotion, including both a sense of loss and perhaps a sense of relief over the event. For example, when people move they may grieve over the loss of a beloved home full of memories while still being very relieved and excited to make new memories in their next home. Other endings may provide the same, though less comfortable, emotions. An example could be losing a family member who has been ill for a period. A person may grieve the loss of their loved one, yet still be riddled with shame or guilt for feeling relieved to not have to deal with the health complexities any longer. This feeling may remain private for fear of being judged by others, but it creates internal turmoil.

This Ending stage is about change management. Our perceptions of change can influence our outlook and how we manage change. It is the proverbial one door closing and the next one opening. We must determine if we are going to stare at the closed door or walk through the open one.

edona is a one of a kind place for tourists from all over the world, and a favorite weekend trip for both Arizonans and visitors from out of state. Named the “Most Beautiful Place in the U.S.” by USA Today in 2003, the stunning Red Rock views, tall pines, quaint shops, and beautiful creekside venues make it a charming place for a getaway any time of the year.

We often get questions from Arizona newcomers about Sedona, since it is a favorite of so many people and one of the most frequently recommended locations for people to visit. Here are our favorite spots to see when we head north to Red Rock country.

IN TOWN EXPERIENCE The town of Sedona is full of arts and culture, with shopping, restaurants and sightseeing tours. Whether you are spiritual, artistic, cultural, an outdoor enthusiast, or just plain laid back, Sedona has something for you. Our first stop is usually Uptown, right at the top of the “Y” – the intersection of Highway 89A and 179. It’s a great spot to find a public parking spot and get out to see the local sights. Walk up and down the block for a taste of the Old West town of Sedona’s origins, mixed with

A good place to start is the Visitor’s Center, where you can get great information to plan your visit around town.

One of our favorite in town spots to visit is Tlaquepaque, an outdoor shopping and dining area just south of uptown, with old world charm and an upscale atmosphere. Nestled in the trees on the banks of Oak Creek, the site of Tlaquepaque was once the homestead of Sedona’s original postmaster, Theodore Schnebly. The story goes that Schnebly was tasked with naming the town and, rather than picking his own name, he chose the more beautiful name of his beloved wife, Sedona.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE AND RED ROCK COUNTRY The best thing about Sedona has to be its location in Red Rock country. No matter where you go in Sedona, you have a stunning view of fantastic rock formations like nowhere else. Hiking and biking trails are abundant but be sure to pick up a trail guide or talk to a local park ranger or outfitter before you head out. The views and trails are gorgeous, but it is easy to get lost in the Coconino National Forest wilderness.

Some of the most popular outdoor spots include Slide Rock State Park and Oak Creek Canyon, but these are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Awesome trails and places to explore are everywhere throughout the town and surrounding area. Our favorite place to hike is in Red Rock State Park, just off Highway 89A as you enter Sedona. It has a visitor’s center with great information about the park, trails, local geology, and wildlife, as well as fantastic hiking trails in the Red Rocks and along the creek.

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES One of the things Sedona is best known for is being a spiritual center.

From its origins as a spiritual center for the early Sinagua people who lived there, to the more modern ideas of vortexes and new age spiritualism, Sedona is a popular place to seek spiritual healing of all types. Known for being the home of quite a few vortexes, or places on the earth with a special field of energy, Sedona attracts people from across the globe who want to visit these sites. The four most popular vortex locations are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

It’s also home to churches and houses of worship for almost every denomination. The most famous of these churches is another of our favorite places to visit, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Built on the top of a huge outcropping with a backdrop of Red Rock cliffs, this majestic church was originally commissioned by a local rancher and sculptor, Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel, built on Coconino National Forest land with special permission, was completed in 1956 and remains one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks. Legend has it that it is also known for being the location of one of the strongest and most easily felt premier vortexes in Sedona.

Sedona is a great place to visit all year round. It’s cooler than Phoenix in the summer and warmer than Flagstaff in the winter, with beautiful scenery and outdoor adventure in every season. It’s a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique places to see and experience.
