City News Scottsdale Police Publish Policies Online THE SCOTTSDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT (PD) RECENTLY CREATED A NEW TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY WEBPAGE THAT PROVIDES OPEN ACCESS TO ITS POLICY MANUAL.
The new page can be accessed at scottsdaleaz.gov/ police/transparency-and-accountability.
These are the most current policies, which are continuously reviewed and updated through an extensive revision process, according to the department. While most policies are available online, not every policy is available through the website to preserve tactical, officer safety, and other security concerns. Under the Arizona Public Records laws, such release or withholding must be evaluated pursuant to the Carlson balancing test. If a community member would like a policy listed in the Table of Contents that is not available on the website, one can make a public records request to see if a redacted version can be released. “The Scottsdale Police Department participates in numerous department wide programs to foster public accountability and provide transparency,” according
to Scottsdale PD. “This includes Uniformed Crime Reporting, International Accreditation, data analytics, policy management, and the Strategic Plan for the Scottsdale Police Department.” Every year, Scottsdale PD voluntarily submits to a rigorous review of departmental policies and procedures that address compliance with over 460 standards, according to Scottsdale PD. A departmentwide assessment, including interviews with city leadership and the community, is completed every four years by external assessment teams. The accreditation process ensures accountability within the department in meeting or exceeding the gold standard expectations of policing, cites Scottsdale PD. For more information about police accreditation, call 480-312-1971.
Scottsdale City Council Approves Improvements to Pima Dynamite Trailhead RECENTLY, SCOTTSDALE CITY COUNCIL APPROVED IMPROVEMENTS TO PIMA DYNAMITE TRAILHEAD, LOCATED IN THE NORTHERN REGION OF MCDOWELL SONORAN PRESERVE, ON THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF PIMA ROAD AND DYNAMITE BOULEVARD. “We are excited to be underway with the construction of the Pima Dynamite Trailhead. This trailhead is the last of the major trailheads to be constructed, and represents the coming to fruition of the community’s vision to preserve the Sonoran Desert,” says Scott Hamilton, natural resources manager with the City of Scottsdale. “The trailhead will provide access to the Preserve for the citizens of Scottsdale who twice voted to tax themselves to not only protect the
land, but to also provide recreational and educational opportunities for this generation, and for those to come.” The improvements were approved for $5.6 million to Path Construction Inc. Funding comes from the voterapproved 2004 Preserve Sales Tax, according to the city’s website. On its website, the city answers some basic questions about the project: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS TRAILHEAD? The trailhead will provide parking and support amenities for public recreational access to the extensive network of trails in the northern region of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Between 2010 and 2015, the city acquired roughly 15,000 acres of land in this area from the Arizona State Land Department. This land will be permanently protected as part of the Preserve. In 2016, the city

purchased 400 additional acres of state land on the northeast corner of Pima Road and Dynamite Boulevard for the location of the Trailhead. The first phase of the trailhead will include the following amenities, according to the city: • Parking for 200 or more passenger vehicles • Parking for at least 12 horse trailers • Restrooms • Hitching rails and water trough • Covered ramada and small educational amphitheater • Interpretive, directional, and regulatory signage • Limited site lighting • Small office/storage space with storage yard • Drinking fountains for hikers and dogs • Entry roads with automatic access control gates Construction on the trailhead will start soon with the goal of
being completed in summer 2021, Hamilton notes. The city is looking for community feedback on the project. Interested community members can provide feedback via a public comment form on its website at scottsdaleaz. gov/construction/project-list/pimadynamite-trailhead. Mask Up In Style ON A SUNNY DAY EARLY IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, ALISON HANDEL AND HER TEENAGE DAUGHTERS WATCHED CANCER PATIENTS ENTER A CHEMOTHERAPY INFUSION CENTER. They entered alone due to policies necessary to try to keep the patients and their loved ones safe and, seeing this, the Handels said to each other, “We need to do something.” And so, the brainstorming that led to House of Luxury Masks began. Through Alison’s position as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Arizona Chapter Board of Trustees, the Handels had long been supporters of LLS’ mission to invest in life-saving new treatments and provide support to patients and their families. A long-time resident of DC Ranch, Alison has personally raised thousands of dollars over a decade of involvement with LLS and daughters Ava (14) and Chloe (12) are often at her side, helping in whatever way that they can. In the summer of 2020 that help has emerged through an innovative initiative the Handels have named House of Luxury Masks — a project born from the Handels’ interest in fundraising, fashion and a new sustainability concept known as “upcycling.” “We were already committed to raising funds for LLS just as wearing masks was becoming a necessity — and we thought, ‘Why not mask up in style?’” The concept was to create masks from discarded dust covers for shoes and clothing, boxes, gift wrap ribbons, and any material that would reflect luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. They researched the best pattern for the masks themselves, produced a few initial prototypes and then worked on a business plan to gather donations for LLS in return for masks that reflected the styles of fashion’s top brands. By using materials that would have eventually found their way to a landfill, they were also able to employ the concept of upcycling, or taking some-
thing that would be thrown out and elevating it into a practical yet stylish new use. Ava, a freshman at Notre Dame Preparatory, created a website to display the different masks available. Chloe, a seventh grader at St. John XXIII, devised the packaging concepts and provided creative direction, while the girls’ cousin, Liv, a junior at Indiana University studying marketing and business management, devised a marketing and social media strategy. And Alison got to work sourcing from friends and neighbors the materials needed to produce the masks. Not long after launching the website in late June and starting the marketing and social media campaign, they received a $1,000 donation for a personalized mask and haven’t slowed down since, with orders coming in from across the United States and Canada. In midAugust, they passed the $8,000 mark for funds raised, well on their way to reaching their initial $10,000 goal by November. They’ve also added dog bandanas and scrunchies to their product mix based on requests from donors. “The whole experience has been remarkable, and the support of the community has truly been a blessing,” Alison says. They’ve begun receiving donations of materials from complete strangers who have heard about their efforts and not only want to donate money to receive a mask, but also make sure House of Luxury Masks can continue to fill more orders. Aside from raising thousands of dollars to help cancer patients, experiencing the creation of a new “business,” and logging hundreds of service hours, there has also been an unanticipated additional benefit for Ava and Chloe. “We learned how to use the steam setting on our iron,” Ava says with a wide smile. City Ci ty NNeews The Annual Tour de Scottsdale Switches Gears, Registration Now Open THE ANNUAL TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE BENEFITTING THE MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANCY WILL SWITCH GEARS THIS YEAR TO NAVIGATE THE EVOLVING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. After careful consideration for public health and safety, DC Ranch made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person event on Market Street. A virtual event, held October 12-18, will allow hundreds of road warriors to keep the cycling spirit alive, stay active and healthy, while still supporting the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. Riders will have several registration
options to complete ride miles on their own. Participants can ride the official Tour de Scottsdale courses, log miles around their city, or even in their home on a trainer. In addition to the traditional 30 and 70-mile rides, the virtual event will introduce a new 15mile course and 5-mile fit family ride. The event beneficiary is the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization that protects and promotes the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in North Scottsdale. With over 30,500 acres and 200 miles of trails, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the largest urban preserve in North America and the fourth largest urban
preserve in the world. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is dedicated to preserving the Sonoran Desert and mountains. The nonprofit protects this living treasure and offers events and activities in the Preserve so that everyone can enjoy a family-friendly, natural experience, according to the Conservancy. Now in its 17th year, the Tour de
Scottsdale donates 100 percent of sponsorship proceeds and a portion of registration fees to the Conservancy and has raised over $600,000 to date. Those who register and complete any of the distances will receive a commemorative, distance-unique medal, a virtual goodie bag and perks—along with all the bragging rights. Registration is now open. Visit TourdeScottsdale.net for details.

Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “With this campaign, we hope that everyone takes even just a moment to share in that mission and remember our brothers and sisters who gave their lives that day.”
On the fifth and tenth anniversaries, a pop-up museum showcased larger-than-life displays in the Scottsdale Center of the Performing Arts. On the other years, a small ceremony in the police and fire headquarters lobby featured the reading of the names of the public safety members who died that day.
In 2012, 911Day.org launched the #IWill campaign to encourage everyone to do something good in their community. This could being there for someone who needs it, making a charitable donation, or packing meals for local food banks.
Participating is easy. Individuals or groups simply take a photo holding a piece of paper with a personal pledge to honor those lost on 9/11 by doing something good. Photos can be posted on their individual social media accounts using the hashtags #IWill and #WeCare (tagging @ScottsdaleFire). The photos can also be emailed to Fire@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. Photos of completing the pledge are encouraged, too. The department will begin sharing the photos during the week of 9/11 starting Monday, September 7.

City Ci ty NNeews Honoring America’s Veterans Names First Executive Director By Jenna-Lee Neff
L
ocal nonprofit Honoring America’s Veterans (HAV) recently appointed Navy veteran Paula Pedene to the position of executive director. The move comes as the organization develops virtual recognition events in place of their annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. “As a Navy veteran and one who is a strong advocate for veterans and their needs, I have personally witnessed for decades the impact honor and recognition events offer in helping our veterans heal,” says Pedene. “Those personal stories of healing I have heard since 1997 make this a fulfilling role for me.” Founded in 2012, Honoring America’s Veterans did not have an executive director before this point. Instead, the organization focused on growing and working with the board of directors to build out the position so they could easily identify the perfect candidate when the time came. “It’s an honor for me to serve as the first executive director of Honoring America’s Veterans,” Pedene says, explaining the process the board took to establish what the organization needed from a leader. “Fortunately, the board knew I would be retiring from federal service, and due to my efforts in founding the parade, helping to create HAV, my operations and public relations expertise fit what they needed.” Honoring America’s Veterans keeps the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade alive after Veterans Affairs moved away from the annual event, which began in 1997. With more than 500,000 veterans in Maricopa County, the organization now hosts the state’s largest Veterans Day event in order to pay tribute to those who have served and show them support in the healing process. “Our veterans tell us that by remembering them on Veterans Day, we help them heal,” Pedene shares. #3 DO YOU HAVE A SOLID PROTECTION STRATEGY IN PLACE? This is an opportune time to make sure that you and your family are adequately insured. Health insurance is a good place to start, particularly if your work situation has changed in recent months. The importance of adequate life insurance is more evident in times like these to protect the wellbeing of your family. Look at other protection options too, such as disability income insurance and long-term care coverage to meet specialized care needs, especially as you grow older.
W
e’re experiencing a period of upheaval in the world today, which has also had an impact on the economy and markets. Given the spike in volatility and uncertainty we’re seeing in the broader economy, it may be time to step back and carefully review your financial life.
decided to cancel the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade and transition to a virtual event instead. The decision came after the organization considered the risks and restrictions put in place to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the celebration will be called U.S.A., A Beacon of Liberty and will feature “Honor Our Heroes” honorees. It will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube for all to virtually attend and enjoy. Eligible honoree essays are chosen from veterans who served between 1941-2011 that demonstrate honor, respect and gratitude. The essays will focus on individual veterans’ military and community service. Once selected, honorees will be interviewed in order to tell their stories for the event. Alongside the “Honor Our Heroes” program, students in grades 9-12 are participating in a creative essay contest on veterans and the impact of military service. Selected essays will be presented in the virtual event. “Although we won’t have an in-person event, we’re working on creating a fabulous online event,” Pedene says. “We intend to interview the winners of these campaigns as part of our event.” To learn more, visit honoringamericasveterans.org.
Take some time to assess where you stand and whether it may be appropriate to make any adjustments in your strategy. Here are four key questions to ask about your current financial circumstances.
#4 IS YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN STILL ON TRACK?
#1 DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH CASH TO MEET SHORT-TERM NEEDS? A healthy cash reserve is important in times like these. A general rule of thumb is to have enough cash on hand (held in readily accessible accounts) to meet three to six months’ worth of expenses. But given today’s economic uncertainties, it may make sense to set aside up to nine months’ worth of cash. #2 ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THE LEVEL OF RISK IN YOUR PORTFOLIO?
Finally, take a careful look at your overall financial plan. Are you still on track to achieve the key goals you initially established? Does your plan require adjustments based on circumstances that have changed? Given all of the events of recent months, this is the right time to review your plan to make sure you are still heading in the right direction. Be sure to connect with your financial advisor to explore these questions in more detail and keep your financial life in order. Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFATM, CFS®,

Health Flu in a World of COVID-19: Why This Year’s Flu Shot is Critical By Dr. Tara Ostrom
I
t’s 100+ degrees out, so you may not be thinking about flu season. However, there are sporadic cases of flu here in Arizona, according to community health data from Maricopa County, and already doctors are recommending people make a plan to get their annual flu shot when it becomes locally available. In addition, this year’s COVID-19 pandemic has shaken our nation and, of the many lessons we’ve learned as a result of this public health crisis, one of the most impactful is the importance of immunizations and vaccinations. For example, in part due to COVID-19, 30 percent of Americans said they are now more likely to get a flu vaccine this year. Unfortunately, many adults still are under the mistaken impression that vaccinations are not needed for themselves or their children or are concerned about side effects. The reality is quite the opposite: in the U.S., vaccines have
greatly reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases that once routinely killed or harmed infants, children and adults. This year, seasonal flu vaccination is especially important as the stress on hospitals will be greatest if the COVID-19 and influenza epidemics overlap and peak around the same time. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that cause COVID-19 will both be spreading in the fall and winter. So while vaccination is important, given pandemic concerns, how you go about getting your flu shot may look a little different. Additionally, some common places where people get their flu shots, such as workplaces, may not offer them this year due to social distancing challenges.
ing in order to help ensure that getting a flu shot is safe and accessible for all patients. For example, OptumCare Primary Care has been following the CDC’s guidelines to help ensure safe delivery of care during vaccination visits including: 1. Screening all patients for COVID-19 symptoms both when they schedule their appointment and when they arrive. 2. Assigning a dedicated screener at each clinic entrance checking the temperature of all patients, visitors and staff prior to coming into the facility. 3. Following social distancing protocols while waiting. 4. Ensuring all rooms are disinfected after each patient’s visit. 5. All staff, patients, and visitors wear surgical masks and staff practice respiratory hygiene, cough etiquette and hand hygiene.
To help minimize risks, there are certain safety precautions and new protocols that health care facilities are implement-
This year’s health crisis has made it a critical year for ensuring that you receive your annual flu vaccination.
The cost of the flu vaccine is often covered by your health plan, whether you buy health insurance on your own, receive health benefits from your employer, or through a Medicare or state Medicaid program. Check with your health insurer and then schedule an appointment by calling your physician or going to a nearby urgent care clinic. Make sure you’re making your health a priority by getting your flu shot this year. Dr. Tara Ostrom is the associate medical director with OptumCare Primary Care.

Healthy Aging Month: What Screenings Are Important Contributed by HonorHealth
S
eptember is Healthy Aging Month. For more than 20 years, this celebratory health month is meant to provide inspiration and motivation for aging adults to improve their physical, mental, and social well-being. Understandably, during a pandemic like the one we are facing today, social distancing remains a high priority. However, your regular check-ups and doctor’s appointments are activities you shouldn’t avoid. According to a recent research published by GoodRx, more than 75 percent of Americans have had some aspect of their healthcare disrupted due to COVID-19 and are canceling or delaying medical appointments. Delaying these important medical visits can lead to serious complications and can have negative consequences. SO WHAT SCREENINGS ARE IMPORTANT? Screenings are tests that physicians use to detect certain diseases or health conditions before any obvious signs or symptoms arise. Common screenings include: • Cholesterol • Heart disease • High blood pressure • Diabetes • Cancers: Skin, Colorectal, Prostate, Breast, Lung and Cervical SCREENING GUIDELINES Cholesterol: As a general guideline, cholesterol should be below 200. If your cholesterol is 150 at age 22, then 180 at 25, you can see that there’s been a steady increase over the three years. It’s important to get checked out while you are young, so you have a point of reference. Heart disease: A screening for heart disease is recommended when you are in your 20s. This can be done by having a blood test where your cholesterol levels would be checked. Blood pressure: Blood pressure screening should be taken annually, beginning at age 45. Osteoporosis: Women should begin osteoporosis screenings no later than age 65. Diabetes: Testing for diabetes should begin at age 45 and continue every three years. WHAT TYPE OF CANCER SCREENINGS DO I NEED? Discuss with your primary care doctor which cancer screenings are appropriate for you. Although guidelines suggest that you have cancer screenings at some point in your life, screening tests may be done sooner or more frequently if you have a known risk factor such as: myhyperlocalnews.com
• A personal history of cancer • Two or more first-degree family members (parent or sibling) who’ve had cancer • A gene mutation linked to a specific type of cancer Your physician will help you decide which screening exams are right for you and when they make the most sense. Skin cancer: Skin examinations should occur every three years between ages 20 and 40, and every year for anyone age 40 and older. Colon cancer: Colon cancer screenings should begin no later than age 50, and continue every five years until age 75. Breast cancer: Starting at age 40, talk with your doctor about whether screening mammography is right for you. Starting at age 50, get a mammogram at least every other year. If you’re at high risk for breast cancer based on your personal or family medical history, or if you have a genetic breast mutation, talk to your doctor to see if you should also get other tests, such as breast MRI and ultrasound. Prostate cancer: Men at average risk of prostate cancer should have this discussion starting at age 50. Lung cancer: The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidelines recommend an annual screening beginning at age 55 for people with a 30-pack a year history of smoking. Cervical cancer: Cervical cancer screenings should begin at age 25. The best way to catch endometrial cancer early is by having a regular schedule of pelvic exams with your HonorHealth gynecologist. If your physician detects something suspicious, subsequent tests may be ordered and may include an ultrasound and endometrial biopsy to extract cells from the endometrium.

Kids’ Corner Resources for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren By Michelle Talsma Everson
S
unday, September 13 is National Grandparents Day, a special time to recognize the grandparents in our lives. With the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations may look different this year. One group who don’t have the option to social distance from their grandchildren are grandparents raising them. More than 60,000 grandparents in Arizona are responsible for their grandchildren. Below are some resources for grandfamilies. ARIZONA FAMILY RESOURCES Available at azfamilyresources.org, this website—supported by AASK (Aid to Adoption of Special Kids)— provides information on the foster care system, which many grandparents raising grandchildren have to navigate. AASK’s website, aask-az.
org, also offers kinship licensing, case management and advocacy. ARIZONA GRANDPARENT AMBASSADORS (AZGA) With more info available at azga.org, the AZGA is a “volunteer support network of grandparents who are raising grandchildren.” The group hosts “workshops, monthly steering committee meetings and quarterly newsletter for members.” GRANDFAMILIES.ORG This easy-to-navigate website serves as a “national legal resource in support of grandfamilies within and outside the child welfare system.” Users can easily navigate a variety of pertinent topics and access an Arizona-specific fact sheet that lists many local organizations that help kinship caregivers. GrandFamiles.org was a resource for information in this article.

Desert Foothills Theater presents
CCUSD Returns with Excellence By Debbi C. Burdick, Ed.D., Superintendent of the Cave Creek Unified School District
A
fter a summer of meetings and discussions with parents, staff, and experts, CCUSD had its academic plans for Returning with Excellence as well as its Logistics Plan for mitigating the spread of the virus, approved by the Governing Board in July. While it felt like the COVID-19 information from the experts was changing day to day, CCUSD tried to be thoughtful and nimble, adapting as verifiable information became available. The District convened three groups in the spring and summer to help make decisions to guide learning and safety. The Return to School Team studied the plans suggested by the Arizona Department of Education to determine the overall structure of the academic plans. This team was comprised of parents, staff and administration. Once they made recommendations, staff worked on the details for the academic plans. The Logistics Committee consisted of CCUSD staff that would be critical in maintaining safety. This committee included the District nursing staff. The Social Emotional Well-being Committee was staffed with parents and experts in the social emotional professions—both internal and external—to design a plan to support the wellness of students and staff. All members of these committees met countless hours to make sure they were researching and designing viable learning and safety protocols for the District. We cannot thank them enough for their time, expertise and efforts. The final academic plans for CCUSD began on August 5, our official first day of school. For K-8 students, the choices were Option I: Distance Learning to begin the school year that transitions to in-person learning when the Arizona Department of Health Services’ metrics are met; and, Option II: the Academy of Excellence—a full-time online school for the entire school year. For Cactus Shadows High School, there were three choices—

Currently, District-wide, we have almost 4,800 students signed up for Distance Learning to in-person classes and over 600 students signed up to stay online throughout the school year. In addition, in the last two Executive Orders, school districts were asked to provide Onsite Learning for students in special categories, including students of first responders and those requiring special services, until school reopens for in-person learning. Onsite Learning is not an academic option like the school plans but more like a study hall where students have a safe place to be during the school hours while they access their classes online. The onsite learning is supervised by the CCUSD Education and Community Services Department as well as paraprofessionals and other staff, not our teachers since they are teaching their classes. CCUSD cannot wait until school returns to “normal,” but until that time, we will continue to provide an excelling education, which is our hallmark.

Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale Opens its Doors By Michelle Talsma Everson
W
hen you talk to Sherry Scott about her new venture, Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale, you can hear the excitement in her voice. The state-of-the-art swimming facility dedicated to teaching children as young as four months to swim just opened its doors at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center (7000 E. Mayo Boulevard). The school is the first Arizonabased franchise of the popular national chain and Scott, its owner and general manager, is excited to bring the concept to the Valley. “Instilling confidence in children is such a rewarding experience and we are grateful to have the opportunity to bring such an incredible and necessary business like Goldfish Swim School to the Scottsdale community,” Scott says. “Swimming is a lifesaving skill every child deserves to have access to and Goldfish Swim School has found a way to make it fun and memorable for children.” At Goldfish, children ages four months to 12 years old sign up for weekly swim lessons. These lessons take place in an indoor, 90-degree pool, that is 70- by 25-feet and holds 8,700 square feet of water. Lessons are provided six days a week, including evenings and weekends, and are ongoing throughout the year—meaning you don’t need to worry about your child having to re-learn how to swim every summer. “Each school offers swim lessons and programs using a proprietary philosophy, The Science of SwimPlay, to build life skills both in and out of the water using play-based learning in a fun and safe environment,” according to Goldfish Swim Schools. “Each school’s number one focus and main priority is always the same – educating children on water safety while teaching them how to swim and respect the water.” Scott shares that Goldfish Swim School operates with busy families in mind. For example, she explains, parents and caregivers can download an app and, if they cannot make a class, they can easily let Goldfish know with the click of a button. The 12 • September 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

school also allows multiple make up classes, doing its best to accommodate its customers. Another benefit of Goldfish Swim School to parents of little ones are its “Mommy and Me” style classes where caregivers can get in the water with their littlest swimmers. Scott shares that one unique perk is that, if a young swimmer is able to safely be in the water without a caregiver, then mom and dad don’t need to get in. In addition to highly qualified swim instructors, all of whom are background checked, the pool has a lifeguard on duty at all times whose sole job it is to watch the water. “Added to the lifeguard, every 30 days, our team does an in-service training to learn how to handle different water emergencies,” Scott says. With COVID-19 at the top of everyone’s minds, Scott assures that Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale is taking all of the precautions necessary. She notes that all swim instructors have face shields, all swim lanes are spaced properly apart, and only one parent or caregiver is allowed in per student. Of course, all high touch surfaces are sanitized multiple times per day. Scott’s journey to owning and managing a Goldfish Swim School location here in the Valley began in 2018. Entrepreneurship is nothing new to the long-time Scottsdale resident as she and her husband own Cute Smiles 4 Kids & Orthodontics, with 17 doctors and four locations in Arizona and Texas. “I’ve helped grow our dental practices from the ground up, so I am passionate about the health of children and the
communities we do business in,” she says. “Goldfish Swim School is my ‘baby’ though and I am so excited to be a part of the franchise.” Scott shares that she is passionate about the brand because “Goldfish is so much more than just a swim school.” She says the bright colors, friendly atmosphere, and details—even down to the changing rooms—are geared toward their young swimmers. The school perhaps puts it best: “You feel it the moment you walk in. Something different. It’s more than vibrant colors chosen to inspire kids. More than a curriculum crafted to not only teach kids to swim but also to build their character through guided play. More than a shiverfree pool heated to 90 degrees. There’s something more. Something unexpected. Something beyond typical. It’s passion. Not just a passion for kids or a passion for swimming; it’s a special passion for changing – even saving – lives by teaching kids to swim and be safer in and around the water.” Goldfish Swim School plans for the North Scottsdale location to be the first of many Arizona-based franchise locales. With 100 locations open and operating across North America and an additional 129 in development, Goldfish Swim School is continuing its rapid franchise development with eyes on Arizona, according to the company. “The positive business climate and community-focused neighborhoods directly align with the supportive atmosphere of our schools – making the region an ideal expansion market for Goldfish Swim School,” says Dan Israel, vice president of franchising at Goldfish Swim School.
In addition to its swim classes, Goldfish also offers special events like birthday parties. “Members and their party will be able to have the entire pool to themselves, with plenty of room to space out and swim safely,” she explains. As the space grows, it will offer accelerated Jump Start Clinics and Goldfish Swim Force Team, catered to swimmers who have completed the Goldfish Pro Level. Since Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale is new to the area, Scott says she is offering several new member specials. For example, for those who pay a year in advance for a Charter Membership, they will receive credit for a free party and their child’s handprint on the wall. Those who pre-pay six months in advance for the Golden Membership will receive 50 percent off of a party. Scott invites curious families to come in and take a look around the facility. They will also host community open houses; locals can find the event dates and times on Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale’s Facebook page @ goldfishnorthscottsdale.

esert Highlands, an acclaimed local luxury golf club and community, recently announced a clubhouse enhancement is underway designed to provide a more robust and modernized dining experience for members and their guests. Real Estate Is Scottsdale North A Good Place For Real Estate Investment? By Scott Gaertner
L
ast month our article here explored how some believe the housing market is poised for a 180-degree turn in the opposite direction this fall. This month I would like to consider the opposite side of that argument. What if that isn’t true and doesn’t happen? With interest rates now below 3%, is it the right time to buy a home in Scottsdale North or is it at top market? SCOTTSDALE NORTH’S APPRECIATION RATES ARE SOME OF THE HIGHEST IN THE COUNTRY The chart below is a chart of the annual average. The updated annual median appreciation is over 12 percent.
We are popular. Relocation reports consistently show the Phoenix area is becoming a top destination for people living in high-cost cities like Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, and Chicago. Lower taxes. Scottsdale North taxes are much lower than most of our feeder states. A strong economy. The Scottsdale area had the lowest unemployment rate of all the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA’s), with more than 1 million in population. The area has reasonably priced housing, lower cost of living, available workforce, and stable climate forecast a growing economy and stronger housing growth. Job growth. Job growth has been vigorous for the past few years, while single-family building permit activity has been relatively modest. There are simply not enough homes to feed demand. Low supply with high demand equals higher prices.
Join Connecting Scottsdale North S ta y U p t o D at e with local insights and more Ways to Join JOIN US ON FACEBOOK OR FIND US ON THE WEB
Luxury sales are the highest ever. July 2020 had the highest number of sales over $500,000 we have ever seen in the Greater Phoenix area, with 1,788 sales. Much higher even than the funny money days of 2005. At the same time, Maricopa County currently has the lowest number of pending foreclosures we have ever recorded.
Experts overwhelming believe 2021 will see more homes sold nationally than in 2020.
A better investment. The record stock market makes many nervous these days, but where do equities go to find any kind of ROI? Many believe real estate is safe and are moving from other equities to real estate. Metro Phoenix tops the nation in rent price growth of single-family homes. Still a good value. If you consider inflation, Phoenix home prices are still 20% below the inflation-adjusted peak in 2005. The Scottsdale North monthly median price is still just 76% of the peak. There is plenty of room to grow and homes to safely appreciate. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW YOUR HOME’S VALUE? With the market so hot, would you like to know immediately what your Scottsdale North home is worth? Here are two ways:
MORE REASONS SCOTTSDALE NORTH IS A HOT PLACE FOR INVESTMENT Arizona’s COVID-19 rates are down. As I write this on August 15, Arizona’s COVID-19 case counts are now some of the best in the country. Scottsdale’s main feeder markets such as California, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, and Oregon, are just becoming comfortable enough to travel due to lower COVID-19 rates. Buyers shift to rural. Due to COVID-19, buyer preferences have shifted from the urban living trend of living in the city close to everything to more rural locations after the pandemic. Scottsdale North has a rural feel but is a short drive to fantastic shopping, dining, sports franchises, and world-class golf. myhyperlocalnews.com

Tortilla Flat A Piece of Arizona’s Old West History
W
By Jamie Killin
hile Arizona has come a long way from its Old West roots as Phoenix becomes one the country’s largest and fastest-growing cities, there are still places that hold a piece of Arizona’s timeless history and transport its visitors back to simpler times, when the not-yet-state served as a mining destination within relatively unexplored land. One of these places is Tortilla Flat, a Western town in the Tonto National Forest approximately 30 minutes outside of Apache Junction. The town’s history dates back to 1904 when it was established as a stop along the Apache Trail and as a settlement for workers who hand-built the Roosevelt Dam. Over the years, Tortilla Flat has had several iterations – even rebuilding on the opposite side of the road from where it presently sits after a flash flood in 1943. More than four decades later, Tortilla Flat was forced to rebuild yet again, after a 1987 fire that began in the restaurant engulfed nearly the entire town. However, the history hasn’t been all disaster – the town has welcomed famous guests including the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Barbara Streisand. It’s also been home to a zoo and even served as the backdrop of Western films, as well as helping to inspire the book “Thunder God’s Gold,” and subsequent film, “Lust for Gold.” Today, the town is a family-friendly attraction and relic of Arizona’s past. It is a fully independent town and has six residents that call it home. Residents and frequent visitors of Tortilla Flat have seen recent upgrades to the

town property including a revamped menu at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant and new decorative touches. The town continues to maintain its history as it looks toward its next 100 years, refreshing the look of property, partnering with more local vendors for the mercantile, and remaining a familyfriendly destination. During a trip to Tortilla Flat visitors can enjoy scenic mountain views just minutes away from Canyon Lake, taste southwestern cuisine at the restaurant and saloon, shop Arizonainspired gifts at the mercantile, or try prickly pear gelato at the Country Store – known for being the largest purveyor of prickly pear gelato in the world, as well as a destination for necessary goods and one-of-a-kind food items like prickly pear honey and cactus salsa. Before leaving, all Tortilla Flat visitors should try some of the town saloon’s famous chili, which has been made using the same recipe for 80 years and is now incorporated into Tortilla Flat’s Killer Chili Dog, Chili Burger and the classic Killer Bowl of Chili. Tortilla Flat also boasts a museum that is an exact replica of the schoolhouse where the local children gathered to learn in the 1930s. While exploring the small museum, guests will learn about the development of Tortilla Flat, including the history of its owners dating back through to early 1900s. ECONOMIC UPDATE: COVID Resurgence Could Threaten Recovery
T
he United States set a somber record on Thursday, July 16, 2020, with more than 75,000 new COVID-19 cases. In fact, the U.S. set new single-day COVID-19 records 11 times between June 17 and July 16. Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts the country will soon top over 100,000 new cases each day. COVID-related deaths are also increasing in some states. Florida set its single day record for COVID deaths on July 16, with 156. Nine other states also set single-day death records the same week. The resurgence in coronavirus cases has led some states to enact new measures. More than half of all states now have some kind of mask mandate. California has even rolled back its reopening, closing bars, indoor dining, gyms, and more. What does this mean for the economic recovery? And what does it mean for your financial future? It’s impossible to predict what will happen in the short-term but knowing where things stand today may help you make important decisions with your strategy. Stock Market The stock market continues to rally in spite of the increasing COVID numbers and the return of restrictions. As of July 16, the S&P 500 is nearly back to even for the year. In fact, it’s up 43.71% since hitting a low 2237 on March 23. NASDAQ set a record-high on July 9 when it reached 10,617. The continued gains are good news for investors, especially after the sharp decline in March. However, that decline also shows us just how quickly the market can turn, especially if state governments introduce new orders that close businesses.

determine which risk-management strategy is right for you. Unemployment While new unemployment claims have declined since March, there are still more than double their level during the height of the Great Recession in 2009. Stimulus In March, the government passed the CARES Act, which, among other things, provided direct stimulus payments to many Americans. A recent study found that 74% of recipients had used all of their stimulus payments within four weeks. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact Americans, Congress is considering a second round of stimulus payments. In May, the House of Representatives passed the $3 trillion HEROES Act to provide a second round of direct stimulus payments. In an interview in mid-July, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin indicated that a second round of stimulus payments was a possibility, even if it doesn’t align exactly with the HEROES Act. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and President Trump have also recently expressed their willingness to negotiate a second stimulus package. While stimulus payments may provide a nice boost, they’re not a replacement for longterm strategy.
