magine a community where every person ages with compassion, dignity, and hope. Duet: Partners In Health & Aging is turning this vision into reality through its vitally needed, free-of-charge services to homebound adults, family caregivers, faith communities and grandfamilies.

No one should have to face life’s aging challenges alone.

Too often, older adults and family caregivers feel isolated as they deal with the most overwhelming experiences of their lives. Duet eases the journey by walking alongside the people they serve on the path of caring. From giving rides to the grocery store and medical appointments, to offering health promotion activities and support groups, Duet is here to provide the compassionate help the community needs.

Duet was started in 1981 by the Reverend Dr. Dosia Carlson and Church of the Beatitudes in Phoenix. At that time, the organization’s name was Beatitudes Center DOAR (Developing Older Adult Resources), which later changed to Duet: Partners In Health & Aging in 2009.

Duet’s services are based on one person helping another.

The nonprofit partner with individuals, businesses, other nonprofits, municipalities, government organizations, and faith communities to make that happen.

For family caregivers, Duet offers support groups, information and guided assistance, workshops, a caregiver mentor program, the “Finding Meaning & Hope” video discussion series, and more. For grandparents raising grandchildren, Duet offers support groups, respite assistance, outings, legal guidance and assistance, and more.

For homebound adults, Duet connects them with compassionate volunteers who provide free-of-charge rides to the doctor’s office or grocery store, among other services.

Duet also trains nurses to become faith community nurses and helps faith communities launch health programs that benefit their congregations and the communities they serve.

“Many of our volunteers are snowbirds and travel during the summer months, but the homebound adults we serve stay in the Valley and are still in need of vital services such as rides to the grocery store and medical appointments,” said Sue Reckinger, director of volunteer services. “Those who are interested in volunteering just need to attend an orientation and then can set their own schedule to volunteer. One to two hours a week makes such a big difference to a homebound adult in need.”

Through volunteers, Duet is able to provide these services free of charge to help Valley seniors and homebound adults live as independently as possible. To become a volunteer with Duet, the first step is to attend an orientation (which occur monthly). Duet responds to pressing needs that are not being met through other organizations. The nonprofit was the first in the Valley to offer free-of-charge volunteer services for homebound adults, as well as comprehensive services for family caregivers and grandparents raising grandchildren.

Duet also introduced the concept to the Phoenix area of congregational health programs led by faith community nurses. Duet exists because caring partners dedicate time and funding to change lives. Hundreds of compassionate volunteers help fulfill Duet’s mission.

WELCOME HOME SCOTTSDALE FIRE STATION 613

THIS SUMMER WAS AN EXCITING ONE FOR SCOTTSDALE FIRE STATION 613 AS THEY MOVED INTO THEIR NEW FIREHOUSE. From development to building, the process was a long time coming, and they’re thrilled to be at home in their new digs.

For the past 25 plus years, Fire Station 613’s base of operations has consisted of a single-wide trailer near Jomax Road and Pima Road, which is also the site of a water campus. The 613 and its first responders needed a safe and permanent home—not just a temporary structure.

Commenting on the safety and effectiveness of this single-wide trailer, Ryan Freeburg Assistant Fire Chief said: “From a fire department standpoint, the facility where we housed our firefighters and employees didn’t meet the contemporary standards and recommendations of our industry.”

In 2015, the City of Scottsdale bought a section of land at the corner of Jomax Road and Hayden Road.

Freeburg explained that the placement of fire stations is determined by using polygons. Polygons are like districts,

and they take into consideration legal speed limits as they relate to how long it takes to drive from place to place. This is how officials and planners determine how many fire stations to place in a given area.

“Four minute polygons,” said Freeburg, “show how far and where we can get to in four minutes, because that’s when heart tissue will die, and when fire is impinging on a structure, you’ll start to see failure in the building.”

According to Freeburg, the current polygon for Fire Station 613 will roughly run from Scottsdale to 100th Street Desert Highlands area and as far north as the tip of Lone Mountain and then all the way down to Pinnacle Peak.

“We needed to get the 613 out on what would be easier access to the thoroughfares to get us east to west and north to south quicker,” said Freeburg.

“This new station will serve more residents in more incidences than the previous location, and we’re continuing to evaluate data to see how we can best serve the City of Scottsdale.”

Once the land purchase for the new station was finalized, a bond election was held in November 2015. Voters wholeheartedly approved and supported

this bond measure, and construction crews broke ground on Fire Station 613 in 2017. And in July 2018, the firefighters of the 613 moved into their brand new home.

Freeburg refers to Fire Station 613 as an “All Hazards” company, which means they train and are prepared for anything and everything. These first responders can do more than just battle fires and provide emergency medical care; they can deal with hazardous materials, swift water rescues and building collapses just a name a few.

Four firefighters, who are also professionally licensed EMTs and paramedics, staff the station around the clock. Also present is a Shift Commander Team, which is a Chief

Officer and his Battalion Safety Officer.

All total, six individuals are posted there 24 hours a day.

In terms of equipment, Fire Station 613 has a fire engine, a tanker and a ATV (all-terrain vehicle), which is used, for example, in hiking rescues and other spots that are unreachable by a regular fire truck.

Fire Station 613 has a forever home, and that’s good for them and all the residents of their coverage area.

“Thank you,” said Freeburg, “for voting the bond to allow us to build a fire station that, in essence, is your fire station and serves the community and your neighborhoods. We want to be amazing partners and a beacon of public safety.”

BECOMING AN OUTDOORS WOMAN WORKSHOP SET FOR SEPT. 7-9 FOR WOMEN WHO JUST WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT THE OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE IS ALL ABOUT, SIGNING UP FOR A BECOMING AN OUTDOORS WOMAN (BOW) WORKSHOP IS A GREAT PLACE TO START.

Arizona Hunter Education certificate. The online course must be completed prior to the workshop, however, at www.hunter-ed.com/arizona. The evenings will be filled with fun and entertainment, like night hikes and guest speakers.

The Arizona Wildlife Federation, in partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, will conduct its next BOW workshop Sept. 7-9 at Friendly Pines Camp near Prescott. The workshop introduces like-minded women (18 and older) to outdoor skills in an enjoyable, no-pressure setting with expert instructors.

A pair of new classes also are being offered: a geology class titled “Name That Rock” and a class in primitive skills. Meanwhile, participants will learn how to catch crayfish, then prepare them along with other wild foods to be served at a game-tasting the first night of the workshop.

In addition to being able to select from more than 30 classes, like horsemanship, geocaching, wilderness medicine, birding and hiking, participants also will have an opportunity to fulfill the field-day requirements to earn their

AMERICAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCES SERVICE BETWEEN PHOENIX AND LONDON AMERICAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL OFFER ITS FIRST-EVER OVERSEAS INTERCONTINENTAL FLIGHT FROM PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, WITH SERVICE TO LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT. The daily nonstop service between Phoenix and London will begin March 31, 2019 and continue through Oct. 26, 2019. The new route will be served by a Boeing 777-200ER and will offer 273 seats with three classes of service: Business Class; Premium Economy; and Main Cabin service.

It will provide another critical link between Phoenix and Europe for both business and leisure travelers.

nonstop flight to London Heathrow Airport, departing from Phoenix Sky Harbor at 7:45 p.m. British Airways has offered nonstop service between Phoenix and London since 1996. With American’s new service, customers will now have access to 14 flights per week, demonstrating that Phoenix has the demand for more than one daily flight to London.

“Today’s announcement is a reflection of the strength of the Phoenix economy, and one that only promises to make it stronger,” said Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams. “This has been many years in the making, and I want to thank the oneworld alliance, American Airlines and the City of Phoenix team for working together to turn it into a reality.”

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been focused on increasing international service, welcoming a Condor Airlines flight to Frankfurt, Germany in May and adding new Montreal service earlier this year. Phoenix Sky Harbor is a convenient gateway to destinations in the U.S. and around the globe with nonstop service offered to more than 100 domestic destinations

and 22 international destinations.

International flights to and from Phoenix already bring in approximately $3 billion each year.

in the auditorium of the Arizona State Land Department, 1616 W. Adams St., Phoenix. The opening bid on this land was its appraised value of $2.745 million. A successful bid amount from this sale will be deposited into an account of the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund at the Office of the Arizona State Treasurer. The account is designated for K-12 public education.

• A parcel consisting of about 134 acres – along with several perpetual rightof-way easements -- at the northwest corner of Hayden Road and Loop 101, Scottsdale, will be auctioned at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. The auction will be held in the Land Department auditorium. The opening bid on this land will be its appraised value of $83 million. A successful bid amount from this sale will be deposited into an account of the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund at the Office of the Arizona State Treasurer. The account

is designated for K-12 public education.

• A parcel consisting of about 23 acres at the northwest corner of 35th Avenue and Happy Valley Road, Phoenix, will be auctioned at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept.

6. The auction will be held in the Land Department auditorium. The opening bid on this land will be its appraised value of $4.62 million. A successful bid amount from this sale will be deposited into an account of the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund at the Office of the Arizona State Treasurer. The account is designated for the Arizona Pioneers’ Home, Arizona Department of Corrections, and Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections.

K-12 public education is by far the largest of 13 Beneficiaries of Trust land managed by the Arizona State Land Department, whose mission since 1915 is to manage the assets of a multi-generational perpetual trust in alignment with the interests of the Beneficiaries and Arizona’s future.

All uses of the land and resources held in the Trust must benefit the Trust, a fact that distinguishes it from the way public land, such as parks or national forests, may be used or managed. While public use of Trust land is not prohibited, it is regulated to ensure protection of the land and its resources and compensation to the Beneficiaries for its use. Today the Arizona State Land Department pro-actively manages more than 9.2 million acres of Trust land, which is 13 percent of the land within the State of Arizona.

students in the valley, and we are providing music scholarships for underprivileged youth.”

RIDING THE RAILS, BIG AND SMALL, IN ARIZONA

T

here is something special about trains. Their size, power and the ability to take us from one destination to another, sometimes through impassable wilderness, is awe-inspiring.

Folks settled in Arizona by riding the rails and traveling in carriages and on horseback. In keeping with that spirit, there many opportunities to take a train ride through historic parts of our state.

Here are some of our favorite train rides in the state, both big and small.

THE GRAND CANYON RAILROAD The granddaddy of historic trains in Arizona, the Grand Canyon Railway has been letting people ride its rails to the canyon since 1901. Headquartered in Williams, Arizona, just west of Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon Railway is a tourist destination – a weekend trip and a fantastic way to get to the Grand Canyon without having to drive. The railway makes several round trips between Williams and Grand Canyon National Park every day, with a wide range of car types and ticket pricing to fit every budget.

Riding the train to and from the National Park has become one of our favorite ways to see the Grand Canyon. The railway provides fun Old West entertainment, beverages and snacks on the 130mile round trip that takes you directly to the train station outside the El Tovar Hotel. They also have a large, modern hotel available at the station in Williams – a great place to stay for a weekend excursion.

The Grand Canyon Railway hosts special train rides and events, including Steam Saturdays, the Pumpkin Patch Train in October, and the always-popular Polar Express in November and December.

dale, Arizona, provides passengers with a historic trip through the Arizona back country near the Red Rock Wilderness of Sedona. This 40-mile round-trip train ride through the Verde Canyon wilderness lets you see wildlife, cliffs, canyons and old mining artifacts from the comfort of a fully-restored vintage train.

This train ride is a fun, luxurious and relaxing trip in climate controlled comfort – but you can also enjoy the beauty outside on one of the open-air platform cars on the train. Located just outside the town of Cottonwood, the Verde Canyon Railroad in Clarkdale makes a great day trip from Phoenix or a fun activity if you are planning a stay in Sedona or one of the surrounding towns.

Calling themselves “Arizona’s longestrunning nature show … railroad style,” the Verde Canyon Railroad hosts many different events to entertain passengers. Their seasonal events include: the “Grape Train Escape” Wine Tasting Tours throughout the summer, a Fourth of July “Firecracker Express” for Independence Day, the “Ales on Rails” beer festival in September and October, a Fall Colors tour in October and November, the Christmas Train to the North Pole in December, a Chocolate Lovers’ Valentine’s Celebration in February, and an Easter Bunny Express near Easter. The train also provides special rides throughout the year, including: Saturday Night Starlight Rides, Native Sedona wildlife tours, and Eagle Watch rides.

all is here. School and extracurricular activities are in full swing. It’s an exciting time for adolescents entering middle school and high school - new friends, new challenges and new experiences. But with that also come tests, both in and out of the classroom. The desire to fit in and feel like you are part of a group is normal, and most people feel this way at some point or other, especially in the middle school and teen years.

Even when trying to do their best academically and socially, it can be hard for teenagers to resist peer pressure. With the pressures of wanting to fit in many seek approval of their peers and begin experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

If kids are surrounded by people with similar values, managing peer pressure is usually not that difficult. But it can be difficult in a school environment when they are surrounded by people with a wide variety of attitudes and behaviors. They may know just what to do one minute but then feel completely overwhelmed and pulled to go against their better judgement the next.

Here are some tips for helping children manage peer pressure as they return to school: • Encourage your children to spend time with people who have similar values and won’t put them in uncomfortable situations.

• Help children set boundaries and give them permission to avoid people or situations that don’t feel right.

It’s OK to leave a situation that feels uncomfortable.

• Tell your children that it’s not OK for others to force or pressure them into anything. They can tell others to stop pressuring them and choose to avoid spending time with people who make them feel pressured. scottsdalenorthnews.com

• Remind children that they don’t have to be liked by or please everyone they meet.

• Teach your children about delay tactics. When other people or situations make them feel pressured, they can try using responses like: “Let me think about that” or “Can I get back to you?”

• There are going to be times when your children can’t avoid or delay a pressure-filled situation. Remind them it’s OK to say, “No Thanks” or “I can’t.”

• It’s OK to use an excuse if the truth is too challenging. If someone offers them a drink and they don’t want to take it, tell them to use phrases like “I have to get up early” or “I’m on medication so I can’t.”

• It’s OK for children to ask themselves “How am I feeling about this?” “Does this seem right to me?”

Listening to our guts is important.

• Practice the buddy system. When your children think they may be in a pressure-filled situation, tell them to take someone with them. Someone who will support and respect their intentions to not drink or stay sober.

With the new school year about to begin, teens will desire to be socially accepted when they spend time with new people or are in new situations.

Ensure a safe and healthy year by being an accountable parent and teaching the strategies needed to cope with peer pressure at the start of the new school year.

GET OUT THERE AND HAVE SOME FUN

hat’s on your agenda for the weekend? Are you planning on vegging out on the couch and binge-watching the latest comedy craze? Or, perhaps you have no real plans except to plop your butt in front of the computer and scroll through social media to see how much more exciting your friends’ lives are than yours. Well, while you’re on your laptop, pull up the Women on Adventures website because you need some ADVENTURE in your life, and you need it now!

Jenny Zink is the proud founder and owner of Women on Adventures, and she’s a testament to the fact that getting out there on an adventure is healthy for your mind, body and soul. So, come along with me on this little journey to discover how you can harness the power of WoA to transform your ho-hum life into one of adventure.

Zink moved to Phoenix in January 2015. Six months later, she wasn’t happy. In her quest to feel better, she studied the Meetup.com website searching for Meetups that were fun.

Everything she found, though, was too specific for her taste; she wanted to experience a variety of activities and not just one type all the time.

She felt like she wasn’t taking full advantage of all the amazing opportunities her new home state afforded her. She was looking to explore and to hopefully connect with some likeminded women. So, she shifted her efforts from searching for the perfect Meetup to how to start her own.

Thus, in July of that year, she started her own Meetup, and her first one was to be a happy hour where she hoped women would meet, greet and schedule some adventures to do together. When she checked her computer the next morning, she saw 50 women had signed up. Within six

months, she had over 2,000 members! Wow!

“My little Meetup had grown into a full-time job,” said Zink. “At the time, I was a freelance photographer between gigs, so I decided to turn my Meetup into a real online business.

I set up a website and started selling memberships.”

One member might be petrified to go to “Coffee and Conversation” but have no problem rappelling a wall of sheer rock while another member might be the total opposite. That’s why WoA offers all types of adventures.

Women on Adventures was born, and any adventure was up for grabs.

While hiking was a viable choice, it wasn’t the only option. Starting out, she did bowling, stand up paddle boarding and horseback riding to name a few.

Adventures can be classified as “Outdoor Adventures,” “Inside Adventures” and “Education.”

“I wanted our adventures to be anything that got us out of our comfort zone,” said Zink, “anything that we had an interest in or anything that challenged us.”

WoA offers monthly, annual and lifetime memberships. And for those who want to test the proverbial water, Zink offers a 30-day trial. Members have immediate access to the calendar where all of the adventures are listed. Once a member signs up for a particular adventure, all they have to do is show up and have the time of their lives!

Some adventures, like the “Hike and Brunch” and the “Coffee and Conversation,” are free. Other adventures, such as “Yoga in the Park,” are free but with the request that a donation be made to charity. And sometimes, there are adventures that entail an additional charge. Keeping watch on the calendar is key since there’s the perfect adventure waiting out there for every member.

As far as types of adventures go: “We’ll try anything once,” said Zink.

“We all have different comfort zones, so adventure is different for everyone. The purpose is for women to

“Outdoor Adventures” include: Hiking, Backpacking, Camping, Skiing, Rock Climbing, Kickball, Volleyball, Drive-in Movies and Rope Courses.

“Inside Adventures” include: Coffee and Conversation, Yoga, Pole Dancing, Bowling, Curling, Museums, Circus School and Indoor Skydiving.

Circus School can be further expanded to include learning to Tightrope Walk, Trapeze and Juggle.

“Education” includes: Learning to Paint, Book Clubs, Cooking Classes and Vision Board Workshops.

Think of it as summer camp for the big girls!

Members aren’t limited to the above list of adventures; those are examples of some of the most popular activities.

“Many of my members are in transition,” said Zink, “like they’re newly divorced, or something has happened to stir up their lives and make them want to explore new places, see new things or try new activities.”

While her business is an online one, she has personally connected with the North 32nd community where she lives, works and plays. Her business has partnered with many of the local small businesses in the North 32nd scottsdalenorthnews.com

In the past, she’s also planned events with Empower Wellness Studio, patronized local restaurants like 32 Shea and, of course, the nearby Phoenix Mountains Preserve is the perfect spot for hiking.

“It’s amazing how many adventures are in this corner of the city,” said Zink. “Everyone who comes here from other parts of the Valley for an adventure is like: ‘Wow! There’s a lot happening here—it’s exciting.’ ” While Zink still loves going on adventures with her members, she has Ambassadors, contracted employees, who lead most of the adventures.

Her utilization of these contracted Ambassadors has enabled her business to expand beyond the borders of Arizona.

Expansion has come in two forms for Zink. Several of her friends who loved WoA wanted to establish chapters—or what she calls Outposts—in their home states. These friends are now contracted Ambassadors of WoA in their respective states, and now these Ambassadors are leading adventures in their area. Friendship created the Iowa and Kansas Outposts.

“The podcasts are really popular,” said Zink, “more popular than anything I’ve ever done other than the adventures themselves. I’m constantly receiving messages from people requesting episodes on specific topics like camping.”

She loves that members are connecting with the podcasts, and she loves that they’re eager to learn about different adventures. Zink wants to empower women with the self-confidence to go bold and strong and try new adventures on their own and with family and friends outside of the WoA network.

Following the success of her podcasts, Zink launched the first edition of her digital magazine in June 2018. The quarterly magazine is available to

WoA has some great trips lined up for those members who are ready to really flex some adventure muscle.

At the end of September, a group is going to Mexico for beach time, paddle boarding and a nature center lecture.

Plans are in the works for upcoming adventures to thrilling destinations like White Sands National Monument, Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.

A trip to Las Vegas is also planned, but it’s not one of those: “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” kind of getaways. This trip will allow members to savor the outdoorsy side of the city.

Still another weekend trip will carry members on a tour of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state.

This has definitely been a fruitful year for WoA. Added to the celebration over the expanding Outposts and the successful introduction of the podcasts and magazine, WoA won the 2018 American Small Business Championship by SCORE. SCORE, which is affiliated with the US Small Business Administration, has been providing complimentary mentoring to small businesses since 1964. The backbone of SCORE are its thousands of business professional volunteers who not only mentor but also lead classes and workshops.

According to WoA’s press release, their prizes include: “An all-expensepaid trip to a training and networking event, SCORE mentoring and publicity throughout the year and a chance to win one of three $15,000 grand prizes made possible with the support of Sam’s Club.”

Finally, they’ll also have the opportunity to compete to become Grand Champion. What an adventure!

WHY I AM INVOLVED WITH THIS PAPER My name is Scott Gaertner and I have specialized in the Scottsdale North Real Estate market for longer than I care to admit, but I truly love it. I have always felt that the area has been a bit ignored or overlooked…a hidden jewel in the desert that has never gotten it’s full due. It doesn’t even have its own newspaper! I thought it was time to end this neglect, so I found the best small-town newspaper company in the valley and asked them to consider creating a hyper-local paper exclusively for these communities that I love so much. Welcome to the first edition!

WHY I LOVE THE SCOTTSDALE NORTH LIFESTYLE I discovered the country club lifestyle back in the mid 1980’s when a builder I was working for gave me a member-

ship to a country club as an enticement to take over sales at a struggling community. I had never been around a community focused on lifestyle and sports before, and being an avid golfer and tennis player, I felt like a kid in a candy store. I was immediately hooked because I never felt like I was working! All I was doing was telling people who enjoyed the same things I did about this amazing lifestyle I had discovered. I was just enrolling new friends to come enjoy it with me!

Once I found this secret that developers would pay me to do what I loved doing, I decided to take it up a notch.

My next job was selling at the best country club available in the late 1980’s - Desert Mountain. They had three golf courses then! This is when my love affair with Scottsdale North began.

Eventually I decided it was too limiting to represent the lifestyle of just one country club. Since all I wanted to do was to help buyers find their

lifestyle niche, I started Scottsdale’s first real estate company that solely represented real estate buyers. While running that company, I had heard about plans for a new lifestyle community called Terravita that was going to be the first “affordable” lifestyle community in Scottsdale. When I discovered the actual details of the community, I quit my day job at the buyer’s agency and went to work selling homes for Del Webb, the developer of Terravita. It immediately became the most successful community in the United States. It was a six to ten-year project that sold out in just 3.5 years.

On six occasions, people camped out in our parking lot to earn the privilege of buying a home in one of the new phases. One campout lasted 10 days!

ARE WE IN ANOTHER REAL ESTATE BUBBLE?

The short answer is no.

Report says, “We therefore estimate that the average single-family home in Maricopa County has a 14 percent rise in price to achieve before it reaches its value in June 2006. Individual homes will obviously vary quite a bit.” And even that appraisal speaks to a much lower price point than the Scottsdale North market.

One of the contributing factors for all the bubble talk is that lately there has been some reporting that our real estate market is back to the home pricing set in the 2006 pre-bust market. That is exciting news, but unfortunately it doesn’t have the benefit of being true.

There are some metrics that matched those pre-bubble levels but saying that we are back to those pricing levels is more than a little deceptive. Speaking directly to this topic, our local numbers guru Michael Orr of the Cromford

TERRAVITA COMPLETING YET ANOTHER UPDATE TO THEIR AMENITIES Terravita continues to prove its commitment to stay at the forefront of best membership experience with a $5.2 million-dollar renovation of their main clubhouse. This improvement is the culmination of years of planning based on their member’s input. In 2012, the community completed a fantastic

update and expansion of the already great fitness facility. They followed that with a complete overhaul and expansion of the community center in 2016. Now they are in the middle of making current their main clubhouse, which serves as the focal point for the 50 or 60 different social organizations that are the heart and the hub of the community. The new design aims to maximize the views from inside the clubhouse to the outdoor desert and mountain vistas. It will also capitalize on our area’s fantastic outdoor living by incorporating sliding door systems and additional terrace seating. The disappearing sliding doors remind me of the first time I saw that feature at Isabella’s Kitchen in Grayhawk. Very exciting stuff!

I was on staff with the developer, and a member of the club when the first club house was built, and it was fantastic. These changes should add immensely to Terravita’s incredible lifestyle value.

A true story of how the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department posed as another, white officer to take down the city’s KKK chapter.

Spike Lee’s new film has humor, but it is not a comedy. It acknowledges how insane the story behind it is but takes itself seriously enough to where you feel invested in it and truly care what happens to the characters. Speaking of which, the performances in this film are fantastic. John David Washington and Adam Driver have wonderful chemistry together while holding their own, and each actor in the supporting cast are also great. The way the film connects to current events is creative and gut punching…especially the final few minutes of the film.

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN

Now living with a family but having little time to spend with them, an adult Christopher Robin reunites with Winnie the Pooh to find their old friends.

Christopher Robin is a quieter film than most of Disney’s offerings, and while the plot is very thin, it’s just so charming and happy that it almost makes up for it. Each of the iconic Pooh characters are like you remember, and while all except for Jim Cummings are new voice actors, they portray them so authentically. Ewan McGregor is the best they could have gotten for the title character, going against some of the usual stereotypes that we see in the “overworked parent has no time for family” genre, and Hayley Atwell as his wife Evelyn is also great. There isn’t much that happens in the film, and it feels to be more of a celebration of Winnie the Pooh than it is a story about him. It’s a case where I am mixed about my feelings of the film, but I would say I lean more to the positive side of it.

SLENDER MAN

After performing a ritual, four friends wonder if the disappearances in their town are somehow connected to a mysterious being known as the “Slender Man”.

So much wasted potential. Slender Man had the potential to be a very creepy film at the very least, but somewhere in the films development, something went wrong. Beyond the usual issues of boring characters and cheap scares, it feels like there are so many scenes missing, especially involving one of the leads. And that may be, because there are several scenes in the trailer that are altered or completely removed from the film. Characters disappear without any explanation (and not because of the titular creature if you’re wondering), and there are random time jumps.

This unfortunately turned out to be an allaround studio-interfered mess of a film.

THE MEG

An expedition in the Mariana Trench leads to the discovery of the long believed to be extinct megalodon shark, before it wreaks havoc on the surface.

The Meg is exactly what you expect it to be: nearly two hours of giant shark dumb fun… and when it happens, it is entertaining. The film takes a surprisingly long bit of time to get there, but that actually didn’t bother me.

Granted, many of the supporting cast aren’t very interesting, but the leads are actually likable, and you want to see their journey continue. And while it is self-aware, it never feels like the film is constantly shouting “LOOK HOW DUMB WE ARE!”. It is genuinely surprising how the film restrains itself and could be a contender for the second-best shark film ever.

SUEANN BROWN FOR TEACHING HER RENOWNED CHILDREN’S ETIQUETTE CLASSES

hen SueAnn Brown was a young girl growing up in Paradise Valley in the 1960s and 70s, her mother, a local actress, used to host many glittering social events and elaborate dinner parties at their home.

From an early age, Brown’s mother taught her the proper way to make introductions, how to shake hands, have good eye contact, and how to confidently talk and socialize with adults.

“I remember wearing a name tag, greeting my mother’s guests and sitting down to formal dinners having to hold conversations with grown-ups,” says Brown.

“My experiences at those dinner parties and the valuable lessons my mother taught me about the importance of having good manners and social etiquette helped me tremendously while I was growing up...I learned how to be more outgoing and confident in social situations.”

Today, Brown lives in Scottsdale and is happily sharing those same, valuable etiquette lessons with hundreds of children and teens each year through her professional work as a certified etiquette instructor and owner of a thriving, indemand business called It’s All About Etiquette.

“I’ve had several parents tell me how much their children enjoyed learning about dining etiquette in my class because they loved eating the special chicken dish with egg noodles I cooked and the healthy snacks I served,” Brown says with a laugh. “Parents also tell me that their children start to enjoy setting the dinner table for the family each night… After taking just one of my classes, parents immediately begin to see small changes and major improvements in their child’s behavior and manners at home.”

Some of the topics Brown covers in her children’s classes include: Selfintroduction and introducing others, handshaking, eye contact and smiling, saying “please, thank you, you’re welcome,” making mistakes and apologizing, avoiding rude behavior, table skills and dining manners, behavior at the table, grooming and posture, telephone etiquette, writing thank you notes, and more. On the final day of class there’s also a special graduation ceremony that family and friends are invited to attend.

Marriott and Charles Schwab and even the San Francisco Giants minor league baseball team have also hired Brown to educate and polish their employees’ social etiquette skills. Brown’s philosophy is this: You’re never too young or too old to learn about manners and etiquette.

Some of the topics for business professionals that Brown covers include: Handshakes, greetings and introductions, remembering names, making a powerful first impression, business card protocol, body language and nonverbal communication, how to make an entrance and work the room, effective meeting protocol, the art of small talk, master your mingling, appropriate attire and grooming, techno-etiquette, and more.

Prior to establishing It’s All About Etiquette, Brown spent eight years as a corporate trainer and workshop leader for an international image and skin care/cosmetic company. She earned a degree in business administration from Phoenix College and is also a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Design and

Merchandising. Brown is also a licensed esthetician and has worked as a makeup artist and taught classes at talent and modeling agencies.

She says her strong background in the fashion and beauty industries has helped tremendously when she offers expert wardrobe, makeup, and personal branding advice to business professionals.

“Nowadays, individuals need to learn proper manners and social skills more than ever,” adds Brown. “Competition for acceptance into colleges and good jobs is becoming increasingly tough and those who possess social skills that are well developed and natural will stand out in the crowd and have a big leg up on their peers. Respecting and valuing others and making others feel at ease are the key reasons why I think everyone in society needs to learn good manners and social etiquette.”
