August 31 Is Final Deadline for APS Customers By Erick O’Donnell As we pointed out in our last column, it’s a lot easier for members of a community to solve a problem when they have caring public servants on their side. And we’ll give credit where it’s due: officials in this state give plenty of verbal support to the idea of leaving unreliable, dirty, increasingly expensive fossil fuels behind and, in their place, powering Arizona with its own most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But actions speak louder than words, and earlier this month, the state’s utility regulators had a chance to show, loud and clear, just how committed they are to fostering the growth of Arizona’s grassroots transition to clean power. Unfortunately, the Arizona Corporation Commission voted to approve APS’s application to reduce the “buyback amount,” which is the per-unit price it pays solar-system owners for the surplus electricity they feed back to the grid. (The reduction—a 10% drop in the price that APS pays a homeowner for each kilowatt-hour put back into the grid— will become effective for new system purchasers who apply for a grid connection after August 31.) Just so we’re clear about the stakes involved here, this is a change that could push rooftop solar further away from being financially viable for Arizona families. For that reason, the new buyback rate, like any other key public policy, should meet two basic criteria: logical justification and fairness. It fails to pass either test. Beginning in September, APS will pay solar customers less for their electricity at the same time it’s charging customers a newly hiked rate. The commission approved a rate increase in May that allows APS to charge 30 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.30 per kWh) during peak power usage, a price that will dwarf what new solar customers will get by a ratio of more than 3½. It defies common sense to suggest that the ever-widening gap between the power company’s returns and those of its customers reflects the economic or technical needs of our energy system. “It is very difficult to imagine an argument that would explain how a commodity could be worth $.30 on one side of the meter and only worth $.084 on the other side of the meter,” wrote Michael O’Donnell, a partner at Peoria-based SunSolar Solutions, in a letter to the commission. “Nor is it reasonable that the same commodity would be going up 26 percent on

one side and down 10 percent on the other.” O’Donnell added: “This is especially egregious when you consider that APS has been granted a monopoly, while the consumer who invests in a renewable power plant is subject to a monopsony.” (A monopsony is the sole purchaser of a commodity in a given market.) This latest decision comes on the heels of a series of similar reductions over the past five years, which have strained the financial viability of rooftop solar. Before the commission eliminated net metering in 2017 (under which solar households sold their electricity for the same price at which they purchased it), solar customers needed to produce 100 percent of their annual consumption to end up with a monthly bill under $20. Subsequent rate reductions then increased that ratio to where it stands today, at approximately 140 percent, necessitating bigger systems and greater investment costs. If this latest reduction is approved, that ratio will further swell to 150 percent. (And money isn’t even the only constraint— roof space, unlike the sun’s energy itself, is not free or unlimited.) That burden cannot increase indefinitely without, at some point, turning a solar system into a net financial liability for a family rather than an asset. Val Berechet, owner of SunSolar Solutions, made that point directly to the commission during a public hearing earlier this month. “I think there is going to be a tipping point, where it’s not going to make sense any longer,” Berechet told the commissioners. “And I really think we’re getting to that point.” The change makes even less sense considering solar power’s dramatically lower cost in terms of natural resources. As former commissioner Bob Burns has pointed out, each solar system saves millions of gallons of water that would otherwise be consumed by a power plant—in the middle of a drought-stricken desert state. Furthermore, millions of people across the world right now are experiencing a heat wave that is unprecedented in its severity and geographical extent, a fact that should underscore the urgency of switching to non-polluting energy sources—fast. It’s getting increasingly urgent for the whole world to switch, and the same pattern applies for every household as well. If you’re ready to secure energy independence and security (for both your family and for your country), then call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Designed to Move Exhibition Celebrates the Beauty and Diversity of Desert Seeds SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART HOSTS DESIGNED TO MOVE: SEEDS THAT FLOAT, FLY OR HITCHHIKE THROUGH THE DESERT SOUTHWEST EXHIBITION THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30 AT SCOTTSDALE CIVIC CENTER LIBRARY. Designed to Move features work by photographer Taylor James, introducing viewers to a surprising, up-close look at the beauty and functional diversity of desert seed designs. James’ photographs illustrate the ingenious design of desert seeds that employ different methods for dispersal and propagation. They can float in the air

and water, fly far from their mother plant and hitchhike on the fur of animals. In collaboration with Desert Botanical Garden, Arizona State University’s Herbarium, and ASU’s Design School, the exhibition is organized by the Biomimicry Center at ASU. Wendy Raisanen, curator of collections and exhibitions for Scottsdale Public Art, loves the connection between the exhibition and the public artwork Sonoran Seed Pods by Jeff Zischke at George “Doc” Cavalliere Park in north Scottsdale. The

sculpture series’ extra-large steel renditions of desert seeds along the hiking path are a natural tie-in with the macrophotography featured in Designed to Move. Additionally, Scottsdale Public Art is offering a special augmented reality experience for those who view the exhibition in person at the Civic Center Public Gallery. Using the Hoverlay app, the public will be able to view a 3-D model of one of the “Sonoran Seed Pods” sculptures and walk through a portal to see the sculpture on the Frank Crerie hiking trail, in 360 degrees, on their mobile device.

“Living in Arizona and hiking in the Sonoran Desert has given me an intimate knowledge and experience with desert plants and their seeds that have attached themselves to my clothes,” Raisanen says. “The macrophotography really shows the beauty and ingenuity of their design.” Scottsdale Civic Center Library is located at 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd., in Scottsdale. For more information and to view all the artworks in a virtual exhibition, visit scottsdalepublicart.org/exhibitions.

Visitors to the exhibition can download the Hoverlay app to walk through a portal to see Scottsdale Artist Jeff Zischke’s Sonoran Seed Pods sculptures. “Move” by Taylor James is among the artworks featured in Designed to Move, at Civic Center Public Gallery.

Million Dollar Donation Will Help the Railroad Park Provide Cooler Options THE MCCORMICK-STILLMAN RAILROAD PARK, A BELOVED SCOTTSDALE TREASURE SINCE 1975, RECEIVED A MUCH-NEEDED FINANCIAL BOOST JUNE 22––A GENEROUS $1 MILLION DONATION BY THE SCOTTSDALE RAILROAD & MECHANICAL SOCIETY. The money will be used to build a new indoor play facility, part of a new project to expand indoor options for families to enjoy the park year-round. “We are excited to make the Railroad Park an even better place for kids and families year-round. Replacing the old and un-used bunkhouse building with a beautiful new multiuse space will do just that,” says Bryan Bundy, community services business operations manager. “Thanks to the mechanical society’s donation, it will include an indoor train-themed play structure, and we will add event spaces and a new shaded outdoor area.” “The Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society believes the project is a wise investment of community 4 • August 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

In addition to the society’s donation, Scottsdale has committed $7.5 million to the renovation. The project is funded through the city’s Capital Improvement Program and is expected to be complete in 2024.

In 1967, the McCormick Family donated 100 acres of land to the city of Scottsdale, stipulating that the land be used to create a park for all to enjoy. In 1971, Guy Stillman chartered the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society as part of the donation agreement. The society provides technical expertise to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park and raises money through private donations and carousel ticket revenues to support park projects. They are the best of the best,” says Fieri. “The idea of bringing this next-level restaurant concept to Arizona, a place

where I have showcased more than 30 restaurants through Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives over the years, was a no-brainer for me.” Caesars Sportsbook is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Guy Fieri’s DTPHX Kitchen + Bar is open Sunday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. for food service and until 1 a.m. both nights for beverage service. With a sunny disposition well-known to hospital employees and visitors at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, Coleman overcame a serious brush with COVID-19 and is the hospital’s number one cheerleader. “Gerry went through very rough days. With the help of our great nurses and doctors at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, he recovered and did not need to go to ICU. One of the doctors told Gerry if he had not been vaccinated, he would not have survived. Gerry had not missed work in the eight years he had been here. The first few days after he returned to work, whenever I heard spontaneous applause, I just knew someone else had just run into Gerry,” says Revard. “Gerry had always been such a promoter of Abrazo Scottsdale Campus to everyone he met––whether it was in the grocery store, the cafeteria, on a patient unit. Now he was a promoter of the vaccines, and he was telling everyone about the caring doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and asking people to trust our great medical experts,” says Revard. “He was the most positive person to everyone who was still debating the vaccines and gave his story in a way that inspired people and did not make them feel guilty or bad because they had not yet received the vaccine. He talked to anyone who asked about his experience–employees, doctors, and nurses,” she says Coleman was also recognized for his compassion for people, from the doctor talking to him about his favorite restaurants, to the employee asking for help, to the patient asking for more food, and to the person ordering their cappuccino at the coffee

Water Rescue

SRP Water Employees Rescue Horse from Canal Photos Courtesy of SRP AS A WATER MASTER FOR SALT RIVER PROJECT, KRISTEN KEIM IS USED TO WORKING WITH CUSTOMERS TO RESOLVE IRRIGATION WATER ORDER ISSUES AND MAINTAIN RELIABLE DELIVERIES. Last month, Keim’s job took an unusual turn. On a hot July Saturday, Keim was removing moss from an area of the Arizona Canal on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community when she noticed a horse standing waist-deep in the water. “The horse was near one of our equipment entrance ramps and did not appear to be in distress and was even blowing bubbles with its nose,” says Keim. “It was a very warm morning, and I didn’t think twice about it being in the water as we often see the wild horses in the area enter the canal to cool off.” Keim left the area to inspect another section of the canal, and when she returned around noon to clear more moss, she noticed the horse was in the exact same location, facing the same direction – although this time it was further out of the water than before. “I hadn’t realized earlier that morning that it was kneeling on all four knees. I grew concerned that it may be injured, stuck in some mud or that it couldn’t get its footing as the moss can be slippery,” Keim said. “Once I realized that he could be injured and knowing the history of the beloved Salt River wild horse population, I was determined to get him out of the water.” With temperatures approaching 110 degrees, Keim

then contacted SRP’s Association Dispatch Center to advise them of the situation and cautiously approached the horse to see what assistance she could provide. After determining the horse was not alarmed by her presence, Keim managed to get the animal to turn around, but not up the ramp and out of the water. After calling her colleague and fellow water master Chris Crosland to help, it was then Keim turned to a tried-and-true wild west approach. “I retrieved a rope from my truck and tied a large loop in the end. I was able to lasso him and pull him a few feet towards the ramp,” Keim says. “I teamed up with Chris, using the rope and the pole to carefully pull the horse and help shuffle his legs up the ramp. It took some time, but he finally gathered his footing and made his way safely up the ramp. Eventually, he crossed the canal road, into the shade and began eating some brush. I watched him disappear into the trees.” “I had to do everything in my power to make sure that he was okay. It was a great reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, you never know what could happen!” Throughout the year, SRP crews are on the canal system performing a number of jobs to ensure the reliable and safe delivery of water to the Valley. While they continue to do essential work on the canals, please provide them with safe social distancing. If you have any questions about SRP water delivery, please call SRP Water Customer Service at 602-236-3333.

CANAL SAFETY TIPS

If you use the canal banks, please follow these safety tips: • Do not enter the canal water under any circumstance. • Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, and tubing in canals is prohibited. • Keep a close watch on children, and make sure to teach them about canal safety. • Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the canal banks (authorization from SRP is required). • Stay away from automated equipment at water delivery gates. • Call 911 for help if a person, pet, or object falls into the canal water. 12 • August 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

Scottsdale Firefighters Association Charity Dinner to Honor Courageous Valley Residents

Scottsdale Firefighters Association will honor Arizona’s first teacher to make it into the National Teacher Hall of Fame, a Valley mom and Right to Try advocate, and an inspirational Arizona Rattlers’ Running Back

T

he 23rd Annual Behind the Flames Scottsdale Fire Fighter Charities Dinner, celebrating the bravery of Scottsdale firefighters and three courageous Valley residents, returns on Sun., Sept. 18. The three honorees will headline the evening sharing their inspirational and courageous stories. As well, the Scottsdale firefighters will also honor the Scottsdale Firefighter of the year. The evening is held at STK, located at 7134 E. Stetson Dr., Scottsdale, and starts with a sponsor reception and cocktails, followed by dinner and cocktails, with a special program beginning at 6 p.m. Kareem Neal will be honored by the Scottsdale Firefighters Association as the first Arizona teacher to be chosen for the National Teachers Hall of Fame. The National Teachers Hall of Fame was founded in 1989 to draw the public’s attention to and celebrate exceptional teachers. Neal has been a special education teacher at Maryvale High School for 15 years. He is inspired daily by his students, and

they are the reason he comes back every day. As the 2019 recipient of Arizona Teacher of the Year, Neal’s 21 years of teaching do not go unnoticed. Right to Try advocate and Valley mom Kendra Riley will also be honored during the evening. Riley is an entrepreneur, but more importantly a mother of three. She became a rare disease and healthcare advocate after two of her daughters were diagnosed with metachromatic leukodystrophy. Riley put her life on hold to seek treatment for her youngest child in Milan, Italy. She now speaks at conferences around the globe and volunteers at several non-profits in Arizona. She has fought and pushed for Right to Try legislation and new research for newborn screenings. She’s given parents locally and around the country new hope and a fighting chance when it comes to breakthrough medical advances. The third honoree of the evening is Shannon Brooks. A star running back for the Arizona Rattlers, Brooks has also become a mental health advocate. Brooks played college football at the University of Minnesota where he became the 12th all-time leading rusher

in program history. After suffering the loss of his mother, and other setbacks, the Rattlers player faced strong mental health struggles. Brooks believes that it is important to share his story to inspire others. His inspiration shines bright, and he continues to show his strength on and off the field. “We are so excited to be honoring Kareem, Kendra, and Shannon at this year’s Scottsdale Firefighters Charities Dinner. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and everything we raise this night will go to help numerous Valley charities during the year. We know the night is going to be special, and we are so appreciative of everyone and the businesses who come out to support us this year,” says Brian Shedlock, of the Scottsdale Fire Fighters Association. Single tickets are available to purchase for $150. There are several sponsorship levels and there is also the opportunity to sponsor the attendance of a firefighter for $500. To make a donation and reserve your spot please contact Brian Shedlock at 520-275-4056 or bshedlock@scottsdalefirefighters.org.

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! professionally. He inspired me to live life to the fullest now—don’t wait until retirement to travel and explore hobbies.

MY FAMILY IS… my biggest comfort and such a source of pride. I have been married to my college sweetheart, Mike, for 27 years. We love Arizona as a whole, and Scottsdale in particular. We plan to retire here. Our son, Adam, went to flight school and became a commercial pilot. He worked as a flight instructor at the Scottsdale Airport and is on track to graduate from Arizona State University this December with a civil engineering degree. I’m so happy he found a profession that he enjoys.

HELLO, MY NAME IS… Kate Daigle I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR SIX YEARS, AND I LOVE… how much Scottsdale has to offer! I can walk downtown, bike the canal path, or hike the Camelback trail. I love Thursday night Artwalk, Scottsdazzle, and Canal Convergence. I can take my horse on a trail ride in the desert, all without leaving town! A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… working with stray, sick, and injured animals at the Arizona Humane Society. I am a veterinarian and love the work I do. It is so rewarding to help an animal get well and find a forever home. After work my husband and I like to take a walk on the canal, often we head to Old Town for dinner. On my days off you can find me at the barn with my horse, Prima! I also take care of my elderly neighbor, and I enjoy going out to happy hour with my friends.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… time with my favorite animal, Prima. She is a lovely horse, and we spend hours on trails around Scottsdale. I enjoy taking her to Flagstaff in the summers, so we can cool off and ride in the pines. She is the best mental health imaginable, and such a joy to be around. We are both learning new skills, and recently had our first win at an eventing competition! MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING IS… Love Actually. I love how the story lines intertwine and converge. It’s happy and sad and joyful and heartbreaking—with

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… A few weeks ago when my husband and I sat through an entire movie and wondered why it was blurry at times. We never asked anybody about it. Turns out it was a 3D movie, and we didn’t have the glasses. We laughed and laughed––oh well!

a sprinkle of humor and songs. I watch it every Christmas, and anytime Harkins plays it on the big screen.

THE PERFECT DAY FOR ME INCLUDES… A morning horse ride, spa day at the Phoenician, happy hour and bar hopping with my husband, and walking around Old Town in the evening.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a veterinarian. I have been around animals my entire life and could not imagine my life without animals in it. I’m so fortunate to have had a 21-year career (so far), and I’m still learning and improving my skills. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… no song. My singing voice is best left to long car rides by myself. However, if I was granted a beautiful voice, I would belt out “Hello” by Adele. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My dad. EJ'S AUCTION & APPRAISAL'S MARKETING DIRECTOR JIMMY GARCIA.

EJ’S AUCTION & APPRAISAL “EVERYTHING WE TOUCH TURNS TO SOLD!”

By Michelle Talsma Everson Photos by Kimberly Carrillo

W

hile many of us have an idea of how we believe auctions work, we may only be familiar with the concept from portrayals in media— which may or may not be accurate. To change this, Erik Hoyer, CEO of EJ’S Auction & Appraisal, is on a mission to make auctions more mainstream and accessible to the average consumer. EJ’S Auction & Appraisal is an estate auction company located in Glendale.

While it has a brick-and-mortar location in the West Valley, over 40% of the store’s consignments come from Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. Auctions are online—making it accessible to shoppers across the Valley and beyond. Hoyer explains that he originally worked for construction companies, which exposed him to the world of auctions in the 2007-2008 economic crisis. “Auctions used to have this stereotype about seeming like an ‘underworld economy,’ and because of that, I saw a niche that needed to be filled,” Hoyer says. “My

18 • August 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

whole idea was to bring auctions to the forefront of the average consumer’s retail experience. Give them [auctions] more of a ‘big box’ type feel—make them clean, welcoming, and not intimidating. I believe that’s what we have done with EJ’S Auction & Appraisal.” If business growth is any indication that Hoyer was correct about filling a niche, then the proof is in the fact that, in 2013, EJ’s had only three employees—today, it has nearly 30 full-time employees and counting. This includes five full-time appraisers.

“Before the pandemic, our in-person auctions were definitely hectic and busy, but now, while customers can see products in-person at our auction house, all auctions are online only,” Hoyer explains. “We are fortunate and grateful to say that we actually grew during the pandemic; I think it was because everyone was home and able to learn more about auctions and participate, too.” HOW THE AUCTION PROCESS WORKS At EJ’s, the auction process is made to be as simple and approachable as possible. myhyperlocalnews.com

Their weekly auctions and quarterly catalog sales feature fine collections of art, antiques, jewelry, furniture, firearms, and more. They average 150 auctions a year, with most happening virtually on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. EJ’s auctions have three different categories, or “rings” of items during their Saturday morning auctions: • The choice ring features luxury items and collectibles. • The bid ring features household goods and similar items. • The crate ring features boxes of a variety of items all packaged together. All the items are listed online before the auctions. Nervous about bidding on items that you haven’t seen in person? No problem, as each week, on Thursdays and Fridays, bidders can see the items at EJ’s warehouse from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. With his goal of making auctions more mainstream in mind, the EJ’s facility is welcoming, the indoor space includes 29,000 square feet of auction and display space. There is also ample parking and food and beverages available at nearby stores and restaurants. All online auctions are available to the public and EJ’s website, ejsauction.com, and include easy-to-follow directions on how to join in the live virtual auctions. EJ’s even has an easy-to-navigate app as well. Once a patron has successfully purchased their item in the online auction, they can then pick their items up on Sundays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the facility. “Auction bidding is not something to be afraid of,” according to EJ’s tips for first-time buyers. “You will not buy accidentally by scratching your nose; the auctioneer knows when you are bidding seriously. On the other hand, don’t wait too long if you want an item – get your bid in early so the auctioneer has the bid before the item is sold.” Hoyer adds that he recommends buyers see the items they want to bid on during a preview day. For those looking to sell items at auction, that process is as streamlined as possible as well. “EJ’S Auction & Appraisal is a turnkey auction company that can handle all aspects of an estate from appraisals, to move out to the myhyperlocalnews.com

sale and collection of funds,” Hoyer says. “Whether or not you have only a few items, an entire household, or a collection, we can be of assistance.” Hoyer shares that his staff has hundreds of years of combined experience and expertise selling antiques, collectibles, furniture, automobiles, jewelry, pottery, glassware, coins, electronics, and nearly everything else. Why should those looking to sell do so with EJ’s? “With registered bidders from all 50 states and over 75 foreign countries, our auction marketing network is ready to generate the results they are looking for,” he explains. In addition to their weekly auctions, EJ’s will often have specialty auctions of specific collectibles. All these auctions are posted on their website, app and social media. Oftentimes, these special auctions will include a “sneak peek” on EJ’s YouTube channel. THE BENEFITS OF AUCTIONS AT EJ’S Hoyer says that there are many benefits to participating in auctions—even if it’s a new way to shop to you. “When you purchase items at auction, you are most often getting them at fair market value,” he explains. “Also, it is exciting, fun and there’s just so much cool stuff! For example, right now we’re liquidating and auctioning off what might be the largest model train collection in the Southwest. These are items you won’t find at traditional big box retailers.” For sellers, utilizing EJ’s auctions to sell their collections, estates, and more, often results in higher prices than if you tried to sell the items on your own—and EJ’s takes care of everything from the appraisal to the auction and all the steps in between.

In addition to their traditional auctions, EJ’s also offers a “buy it now” section on their website for specific collectibles. And, for those who haven’t been to the facility, Hoyer shares that is it decorated with some amazing items from various unique collections. “Auctions don’t have to be intimidating— they can be exciting and fun,” Hoyer says. “At EJ’s, we treat everyone equally and believe in over-delivering quality customer service and results.” EJ’S Auction & Appraisal is located at 5880 W. Scottsdale Community College Announces New Pharmacy Technician Training Program

T

he 2020s have made clear how vital careers in healthcare are to our society, and pharmacy technicians are an integral part of that industry. Starting in the Fall 2022 semester, Scottsdale Community College (SCC) will begin offering classes for its new Pharmacy Technician Certificate of Completion (CCL) program** to efficiently prepare anyone interested in working in healthcare for the abundance of new positions set to open over the next decade. The Pharmacy Technician CCL from SCC is a 16-credit program that prepares students for a role working in pharmacy practices in retail, hospital, and institutional settings. According to O*Net, the starting annual salary for pharmacy technicians in Arizona is estimated at $37,240, which is higher than the national average, and positions in this field are expected to increase by 25% over the next 10 years across the state. This area of study can be an attractive entry point for anyone interested in a career in healthcare or for existing healthcare professionals looking to upskill within their industry. “We recognize how important it is to Scottsdale and Arizona as a whole to have a dedicated pipeline of welltrained healthcare professionals,” says SCC’s Interim President Veronica Hipolito. “From our established

popular programs like nursing to emerging fields like community health worker and now pharmacy technician training, we’re proud to be a part of supporting the health of our community through our educational programming and workforce development.” The program, approved by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, prepares individuals to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam or the National Healthcareer Association Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT), which is required for employment. Topics covered include medication preparation; handling of a variety of substances (hazardous and non-hazardous); reporting guidelines (federal and state); OSHA guidelines and best practices; patient safety and quality assurance; order entry and processing; inventory control and management; administrative duties; health and wellness guidelines; billing and reimbursement principles and practices. Coupled with the included internship or practicum at leading industry employers’ facilities, students will be prepared to take their certification exam and begin their careers in this rapidly growing field. Students will also have the opportunity to network with professionals already working in the field to help

them find positions in traditional pharmacy settings in drug or grocery stores, hospitals, clinics, nuclear medicine settings, compounding pharmacies, long term care facilities, insurance companies, pharmacy benefits companies, and other retail outlets. Classes begin in August 2022. For more information, visit scottsdalecc.edu **Pending approval by the U.S. Department of Education. Classes are open for enrollment in the fall 2022 semester and will be eligible for financial aid once approved.

Applications are also available in the front office at each district school. Families can apply for benefits at any time. High Schooler Logan Rose is Stepping Up to the Plate Again for the Third Annual Western WIFFLE Ball Classic

F

ollowing the success of the last two Western WIFFLE Ball Classics, its founder, 15-year-old Logan Rose, is excited to bring back the popular event for a third year.

some key differences include the field size and dimensions scaled down, a smaller and skinnier plastic bat, using a plastic Wiffle ball, and pegging runners with the ball.”

Rose, a Paradise Valley resident, began his journey in the sport by creating Big League WIFFLE Ball in July of 2019. In less than three years, Rose had grown such a dedicated following that in 2020 he decided to host a tournament for all ages at the Fenway Park of spring training, Scottsdale Stadium.

The 2022 tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 29 and will allow for up to 42 teams to enjoy a competitive championship tournament. All fields will be set up on Scottsdale Stadium’s main field, home to the San Francisco Giants spring training.

Teams will be comprised of three to five players, each team guaranteed to play three games each. Games will last 35 minutes or four innings, whichever comes first. Then, 16 teams will advance to a single-elimination tournament. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate in the tournament. The winner and runner-up will be awarded the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic trophy. “These past two years have been amazing. It has been so great to see

so many people get involved in the tournament,” says Rose. “My goals for the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic include growing it to one of the largest Wiffle ball tournaments in the league. I think having over 50 teams participating one day would be awesome. Among my goals for Big League Wiffle Ball are to get a bigtime feature by a sports network such as ESPN and to grow to over 100,000 total followers across social media.” To learn more, visit blwwiffleball.com.

“I was inspired to start the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic after creating a four-team wiffle ball league in my backyard during the summer when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit. Playing wiffle ball on those hot summer days brought a lot of those players, including myself, so much joy that we were all disappointed when the season came to an end. The success of the season called for something bigger and better, the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic at Scottsdale Stadium,” says Rose, who had help in starting the tournament from someone near and dear. “My dad was a major help in starting this tournament through his past experience in starting various events. It was very helpful to learn from him and hear his input on the event,” says Rose. For those who don’t know what the sport is, Rose explains: “Wiffle ball is essentially mini baseball with a plastic ball that can curve, drop, rise, etc., way more than a regular baseball. For the most part, rules and the overall format are very similar to baseball. However, 22 • August 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

Kids’ Corner

SCHOOL SAFETY FIVE QUESTIONS ALL PARENTS SHOULD ASK SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

By Nadine Bubeck

A

s parents, it’s inevitably on our minds, sending our kids back to school after ending the 2022 school year drowning in horrific headlines. Surely, we can’t help but ponder a Uvdale-like situation happening in our community, leaving us unsettled, worrisome, and nauseated. The experts at Pro Defense Advisors out of Scottsdale says 83% of attacks last five minutes or less; 44% end in one minute. In addition, the average police response time in the United States is seven to 10 minutes. Let that sink in. So, what can parents do to proactively play a role in ensuring the safety of local schools? Well, Pro Defense Advisors suggests asking your district and administrators five safety questions. Such inquiries will better educate parents on protocol, as well as encourage schools to achieve maximum safety measures.

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS TO GET THE CONVERSATION STARTED.

QUESTION 1: Does your campus have a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO) program? Why Ask: A dedicated SRO should be officed and assigned to your school for the 40-hour workweek and not split between other locations. The officer should have a fully marked patrol vehicle, usually parked in the front of the building. The role of the SRO is to be a dedicated security agent constantly patrolling campus. They also

have several duties other than security, such as teaching safety classes, increasing community engagement, and responding to regular services calls.

communication in a critical incident as well as the parent/guardian response to the scene, accountability of students, etc.

QUESTION 2: Has the school district conducted a full Threat Vunerability Assessment (TVA)? Why Ask: These assessments can be completed by the Homeland Defense Bureau of a local police department or private security consultants, such as Pro Defense Advisors. The on-site analysis provides a detailed report on campus threats and offer solutions to better secure the campus.

QUESTION 5: Does the school have a standard EOP for any type of emergency (attacker, flood, fire, etc.)? Why Ask: This plan should outline policy and procedures for the FEMA protocols. The Incident Command System (ICS) should be in place and the school staff should be properly trained. School staff will likely be the first and last line of defense for any critical incident at your school.

QUESTION 3: What is the school’s Lockdown Plan and Drill Schedule? Why Ask: A Lockdown Plan and performing regular drills, like fire drills, are incredibly important, as it gives teachers and students practice should a real-life situation occur. Food for thought: fire drills are usually conducted once per month, and the last child that perished in a school fire was 1958. Statistics have shown that no child has been killed behind a locked classroom door during an active shooting situation. What is your school’s drill and protocol?

If you seek additional resources for education on active shooting situations, there are numerous avenues available, including the RUN-HIDE-FIGHT video supported by the FBI (available on YouTube), as well as ALICE – Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate.

QUESTION 4: Does your school have a Parent/ Guardian Reunification Plan? Why Ask: A Parent/Guardian Reunification Plan should be clearly communicated with parents/guardians prior to school beginning for the semester. This plan outlines

As a reminder, always encourage your children: if you see something, say something. Reiterate that school is a place where students should feel safe in expressing concern to an adult, and all reports should be taken seriously. Create an open-door policy with your kids and welcome communication. As parents, report all things questionable. For more information, visit prodefenseadvisors.com. Real Estate

A Return to Balance

Market uncertainty is temporary By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker

M

y June article described how the Scottsdale North real estate market was changing. I wrote that piece on May 15, so that it could be in newsstands and your mailbox by June 1. While I sensed that the changes were going to be significant, it was still too early to be sure, or to provide you with the evidence. We have the data for that evidence now. But, to begin, I think this quote from Michael Orr (the Oxford mathematician from the Cromford Report) sums the change up well: “The collapse between April and June is unprecedented—faster and more violent than we have ever witnessed. This is due to a very rapid decline in demand coupled with an explosive rise in supply.” CONTRACT RATIO To demonstrate the extent of the market shift, I need to introduce you to a new

metric. The Cromford Market Index is not helpful in this situation since it is too average-based and eliminates trivial daily differences. However, the Contract Ratio is a straightforward measurement that has no smoothing or averaging effects. As a result, it is far better suited to determining how “hot” a market is and is particularly responsive to abrupt changes in the market. QUICK EXPLANATION The Contract Ratio specifically measures the number of completed sales contracts relative to the supply of active listings. The higher the number, the greater the buying activity relative to supply. In a balanced market for normal market segments, the value of the Contract Ratio is usually between 30 and 60. When it lies below 20 the market can be considered “slow” or a “cold market.” Above 60 can be considered a “hot market” and when it moves above 100, we regard this as evidence of a “buying frenzy.” Below is the 2022 Weekly Contract Ratio Chart for Scottsdale.

As you can see in just the short time from mid-March until the end of June, the Scottsdale Contract Ratio has slipped from 210.9 to just 42.7. That takes us from a very hot seller’s market to a balanced or neutral market in just four months. We have never experienced that kind of a downturn in such a compressed period. Regarding the unprecedented, compressed nature of the shift Michael Orr says, “When a housing cycle changes from positive to negative, we normally go from euphoria to uneasiness for a few months, followed by several months of denial and then several more months of pessimism before we get to the panic phase. This is what played out in 2005 and 2006. But in 2022, it seems to have taken just a week or two to skip through each of these steps and gone from euphoria to panic in no more than 10 weeks. After the first round of sharp rises in mortgage rates, everyone was so willing to believe that the market was about to fall that it became a self-fulfilling prophecy.” The market is not crashing. We are seeing balance return to the housing market as competition eases due to the Fed’s effort to dampen demand by raising interest rates. The housing market hates uncertainty, and we have buckets full of uncertainty right now. But that is temporary. It could take months to clear, but it is temporary. In the macro picture, our market still has far more demand than supply. I mentioned in June’s article that in times like these, caution is advisable, fear is not. Panic can lead to mistakes and a mistake right now will be exponentially more expensive than in a

normal market. Let’s choose data over drama during this time. DATA OVER DRAMA I will be here providing data and direction. If you like to do your own research, I caution you about going to the internet. I assume you all understand how to avoid the pitfalls of identity theft, hacking, and viruses, but the accuracy of information you can get is questionable. There are so many competing interests on the internet, and most are driven to try and get your information. Every search opens you up to spamming and phone calls because the best information is behind paywalls. We have found the two simplest and least invasive tools available for you to watch the market. If you would like to keep up with home values in your neighborhood, go to noseyneighbor.com. If you rather keep up your own Scottsdale North home value in an email once per month, go to scottsdalenorthvalue.com. As always, if you have any questions, I’m available to discuss all things real estate. Is it Time to Update Your Old Trust? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

I

review many trusts. Some are quite old, and my client knows it is time for an update. Other times, they were done not terribly long ago, but the laws have changed. How do you know when it is time to update your trust? There are a couple of key dates that give some answers. First, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, to become effective in 2009. The Arizona Trust Code changed the law governing trusts in a substantial way. Thus, if your trust was done around this time or before, an update is in order. Another key date is 2012. Before 2012, estate taxes were an issue for many people. As an example: In 2001, the federal law gave each person an estate tax exemption of $675,000. That meant that if your total assets were more, your family might end up paying estate taxes of 40% on anything over $675,000. Older trusts had complicated planning to avoid estate taxes because of the low exemption amounts. However, you may not need that complicated plan today, because each person’s estate tax exemption is now over $12 million (but will be reduced to about $6.5 million in 2026). The old planning to avoid estate taxes usually involved creating a second, irrevocable trust on the death of one of the spouses. This was called “A” and

Call us today to schedule your

FREE Estate Planning Consultation

“B” trust planning. While the surviving spouse still benefits from both trusts, the irrevocable trust cannot be changed and has its own tax identification number and its own separate tax return. If you don’t have a taxable estate, the division into two trusts at the death of the first spouse may not only be unnecessary but undesirable. When we look at whether to update these provisions of your trust, we analyze all of this and decide what is best for you given your situation and how the estate tax laws impact you. In addition to the need to update because of new laws, some changes may be needed to your trust just because of the passage of time. Your children or beneficiaries are older. Maybe you’ve had another child that’s not listed, or you now have grandchildren to include. The people you named as trustees and financial agents may not be the best choice any longer. Your decisions on how to distribute your assets may not be what you wish now. All of these are important reasons to get a review of your trust. In our office we recommend that you have a review of your estate plan every three to five years. In particular, if your trust was done before 2012, please contact us for our no-charge, 10-point review so that together we can determine if your plan still makes sense for you and your family. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

IN THEATERS

Elvis The story of the king of rock and roll from beginning to end.

The Black Phone A young boy receives calls from the dead after being kidnapped by a serial killer. The Black Phone does a very good job at managing to keep a fast pace despite its locations being limited. You’re enthralled by the imprisonment of Finney and his attempts to get out, while simultaneously seeing the supernatural side play out with his sister and her sort of detective story. All of this is obviously helped by the actors, specifically the child leads and Ethan Hawke’s rare turn in a villain role. But also, director Scott Derrickson gives the film the creepy, urban legend vibe that’s grounded by the 1970s setting. It’s the kind of pulp that still has some meat on its bones that was common from the horror genre 30 to 40 years ago, and it’s one any genre fan can enjoy.

David Cronenberg’s return to movie making is well-timed, and the focus on pollution and climate change and how it will affect our bodies is a horror that’s presented as a morbid beauty from the perspective of our characters. Characters who will change their organs for art, pleasure, or to eat plastic, and each of the actors showcase those emotions from fascination to despair. Léa Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen are of course excellent as a patient-doctor couple, but Scott Speedman stands out as an odd, sniveling figure whose life and work is falling apart around him. Howard Shore’s booming score is the defining feature to the apocalyptic world that’s just barely held together. This is another reminder of what Cronenberg is capable of and how impactful his tales of human disasters are.

Visuals that showcase what might as well be from another world, but also a showcase of just how truly driven and passionate these two were—that pursuit of the discovery of something grand while keeping a loving relationship that still was a tightrope walk for the two of them. Miranda July’s narration is a perfect bow on top, to bring home the melancholic feel of it all. What a wonderful way to tell an underseen story.

NEW RELEASES AUGUST 5 • Bullet Train (Theaters) • Easter Sunday (Theaters) • Bodies Bodies Bodies (Theaters)

The musician biopic has been done to death at this point, and Elvis follows the traditional promising start followed by struggles route. However, like Rocketman before, it’s elevated by the unique approach to it, namely in how director Baz Luhrman makes the film feel like a rush, like we’re inside Col. Tom Parker’s dying fever dream as he retells his and Presley’s story. Hanks is quite good as the devious total POS of a manager. Austin Butler steals the show as the title character in a performance that’s more resurrection than imitation. The over two-hour runtime does feel bloated in the middle section, though showing Elvis’ struggles with his aspirations towards activism makes it much more interesting, as well as the surprisingly somber note it ends on. It’s a nice reminder of a movie that shows how even the same stories can feel exciting with the right hook. Crimes Of the Future The next stage of human evolution through organ metamorphosis is shown in the stories of three individuals.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen home movies as beautiful as the Krafftt’s works shown in Fire of Love.
