City Ci ty NNeews Drive-In Concerts Debut in Scottsdale

MONTHS INTO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING BEING THE WAY OF LIFE FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, LOCALS ARE FIGURING OUT WAYS TO CONNECT AND SOCIALIZE WHILE STILL SOCIALLY DISTANCING. Because of this, the Scottsdale City Council recently approved $50,000 toward funding a drive-in summer concert series at WestWorld, which began with the July 25 Blake Shelton concert. “R Entertainment and MCulinary, producers of the WestWorld of Scottsdale Drive-In Concert Series have requested a one-year event development agreement with the City of Scottsdale,” according to a report from the City of Scottsdale. The event series will be held at WestWorld and feature popular entertain-

ment and comedic acts through early September. Each event is expected to welcome 500 cars, averaging about 2,000 attendees each time, according to the City. “WestWorld of Scottsdale will host a summer concert series in which each performance will be filmed exclusively for a one-night-only event,” according to the City.

The Blake Shelton concert charged an average of $115 per “one passenger car, truck or sport utility vehicle with up to six people (or as many as there are legal seat belts).” Prices may vary for upcoming events. The Scottsdale Drive-In Concert Series is part of a national series. “Venues hosting these events will adhere to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, as well as state and local health mandates,” cites the City.

SOME OF THE SAFETY GUIDELINES INCLUDE: • Social distancing guidelines will be mandated. • Cars will be arranged by vehicle size and height and in accordance to social distancing guidelines and to obtain optimal viewing for all guests. • Attendees will need to print tickets and bring with them or have them on their phones. There will be no ticket sales on site. • Attendees may bring chairs and sit outside their vehicle, but will need to stay within their parking space area. Space outside of vehicle may be limited. • And more, according to WestWorld staff. To see the complete list of upcoming concerts and events, or for additional information, visit scottsdalesummerconcerts.com.

A MORE PERSONALIZED DRIVE-IN EXPERIENCE For locals looking for a smaller outdoor movie experience, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess is offering drive-in movies for private groups. “The drive-in movies will only be available for private events – for example, a birthday party, anniversary, corporate teambuilding, etc.,” explains spokesperson John Glynn. City News CARES Act Funding in Scottsdale HELPING RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES THAT HAVE BEEN HIT HARD ECONOMICALLY TOP THE LIST OF WAYS THAT THE CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED MORE THAN $29 MILLION IN FEDERAL CARES ACT FUNDING BE PUT TO WORK IN SCOTTSDALE. Programs and services for Scottsdale residents in-need will receive $3 million, which will be used to provide things like meals and services for seniors and low-income families, rent and utility assistance, and programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. The council’s action also provides $5 million to support local businesses including loans, grants, commercial utility assistance, and expanded marketing campaigns to help Scottsdale businesses get back on their feet. In addition to those programs, event venues like Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Scottsdale Stadium and WestWorld, are among 30 city buildings that could receive healthfriendly upgrades including automatic doors and faucets, ultraviolet disinfection of air handling systems and expanded technology systems for remote work. Facilities to be upgraded also include libraries, senior centers, community centers, and City Hall. With the sudden decline in economic output during the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Congress introduced and passed the CARES Act. The act provides funding to state, local and tribal governments dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of the federal funding, Arizona cities and counties received about $441 million in COVID-19 relief fund, known as the AZCares Fund. City and county populations determined the specific amount each would receive. The city of Scottsdale received $29,628,014. The money will be appropriated based on two funding priorities: Community Investment and City Operations. Should I have a mortgage in retirement? By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor Affinity Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC

T

that may or may not be suitable for your particular circumstances. Rather than paying down the mortgage monthly, redirect the extra principal payment to a savings vehicle. We refer to this as building a sinking fund. If history prevails, the rate of return on an investment may allow the growth of the sinking fund to eventually equal the amount of debt on the home (as your continued monthly payments chips away at the debt balance). The flexibility of having the funds to provide income during retirement or payoff the mortgage may allow you to make decisions suited for your personal situation in whatever scenario you may find presented to you in the future. The pandemic of 2020 has clearly revealed that lending practices can adjust quickly, reducing or even eliminating your ability to refinance or obtain a mortgage when you most need it. Having the flexibility to choose your path when much is out of our control may provide the comfort you are seeking in the feeling of a debt-free home. As you age and fewer options may be available to you during economic turmoil, having a portfolio to generate income to help meet your needs may make greater sense than having a debt-free home. We encounter this thought regularly. In working with our clients, we help them evaluate ways to efficiently manage debt and investments to help meet their needs. Would you like to experience the comfort of being more in control by understanding your choices? Call us at 602.923.9800 to discover how you can live brilliantly. The views expressed here reflect the views of Renee A. Hanson as of June 3, 2020. These views may change as market or other conditions change. This information is not intended to provide investment advice and does not account for individual investor circumstances.

he dream for many homeowners is to be mortgage free entering retirement. Perhaps this is rooted in our upbringing from parents growing up in an era that coveted debt-free living. Have things changed? Yes, and the biggest one is that we are living longer and feeling the effects of compounding inflation. That means that your cost of living may triple during your retirement years. A home does not generate a level of income to pay these expenses. Will your investments keep pace? The heart string tug at owning our homes can be powerful. So powerful that we may be hyper focused on paying down the mortgage and lose track of building assets that will recreate a “paycheck” during retirement to put food on the table in our paid for home. You may feel a sense of control having no home debt, but you may be giving up control by losing flexibility during economic changes. A debt-free home provides a sense of security for a place to live out our remaining years. The silent generation (the generation before baby boomers) learned the hard lessons of the great depression from their parents and grandparents and have instilled the importance of debt-free living. However, the level of guaranteed income has decreased in years with more organizations shifting from pensions to defined contribution plans. In addition, life expectancy has increased. More responsibility has shifted to you to manage your financial future than ever before – a future that seems to grow longer with every passing year of increased healthcare advances. Creating the flexibility for continued quality of life has never been more challenging. With mortgage rates being historically low it may make sense to look more closely at your ability to maintain your quality of life throughout your lifetime and have flexibility as you live Ameriprise Financial, Inc. and its affiliates do not offer tax or legal advice. your retirement years. Kids’ Corner

Art, Culture, and Science FOR LOCAL KIDS

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

A

s parents and caregivers, we are constantly looking for opportunities to help our children grow and learn in creative, innovative ways. This is especially true these days while kids are largely stuck at home during the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fostering a love of art, creativity, and scientific exploration is a great way to keep your youngsters thinking and growing mentally, socially, intellectually, and emotionally. No matter how you encourage your children to express themselves and their interests, the act of creating and learning will help your child grow and develop. Fortunately for us, Arizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. Most of the local museums are temporarily closed, but if you want to get the kids out of the house for a while and do something fun and educational, we found a few local venues that are open to the public right now. Be sure to call ahead or check them out online before you go, but these businesses are currently welcoming visitors, so put on your masks and give them your support. HEARD MUSEUM heard.org Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming,

and unrivaled festivals. The museum has one of the largest and most outstanding collections of American Indian artwork in the country. It includes historic, cultural, and fine art collections of more than 3,600 pieces, and extensive documentation of the development of the American Indian Fine Art Movement, starting in the 20th century.

and has special features for kids, like the “Out on the Ranch” exhibit. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is definitely worth visiting and a great day trip to get the family out and about while still keeping cool indoors during the summer.

The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum presents stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective and exhibits that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary Native American art. The Heard Museum is a Phoenix treasure that provides visitors with a unique perspective of our cultural heritage in the Southwest. It’s a one-of-akind attraction and a must-see museum, welcoming visitors in difficult times to share in its wonders.

ODYSEA AQUARIUM odyseaaquarium.com The state of the art OdySea Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Southwest. It boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures, not to mention one of the best shark-watching restrooms in the Valley. It is best to buy your tickets online in advance, to check hours, get discounts, and avoid waiting in long lines. Community Local Family Fundraises for a Chance to Save Their Daughter’s Life

F

ive hundred thousand dollars and five months in Italy. That’s the Riley family’s only hope for saving their 5-month-old daughter Keira, who along with her 2-year-old sister Olivia, suffers from a form of Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) so rare that they don’t even search for the mutation in today’s genetic testing. The family needs to raise money for treatment. Tax deductible donations may be made at armerfoundation.org/keira-and-olivia. The family also has a GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/f/ help-save-keiras-life-from-mld. MLD is an extremely rare, fatal brain disease that destroys the protective fatty layer (myelin sheath) surrounding the nerves in the central nervous system. It aggressively takes away motor function and other abilities when symptoms show early in life. Most children are not expected to live past 4 to 6 years old. Olivia’s siblings were immediately tested while Olivia began the only ongoing clinical trial for MLD patients. The treatment is not curative and cannot reverse damage already done, but seeks to slow the rapid progression of the disease while protecting and preserving quality of life. “Olivia has lost her vocabulary, cannot pronounce most words and experiences some form of pain from moderate to severe on a daily basis,” says Kendra. “She still has a lot of smiles and her big

sister Eva and baby sister Keira always make her light up.” This summer, the Rileys learned Keira also has both mutated copies of the gene and has been diagnosed with MLD. The Rileys turned to CureMLD.com and The MLD Foundation, and learned of a cutting-edge MLD gene therapy treatment only available in Milan, Italy, and it may not be covered by health insurance. Since beginning the treatment in 2010, the Institute in Italy has treated 29 patients from around the world, 26 of which are still alive. Currently asymptomatic, Keira is eligible for the therapy but not as part of the clinical trial, which means the Riley family will have to pay for her treatment out of pocket if it is not approved by insurance. The investment for treatment, lodging, travel and living expenses during treatment is estimated at $500,000. “We only have one hope left; $500,000 sounds impossible. It’s overwhelming, but if 100,000 people who hear our story are compelled to donate just $5 each – we’ll have the opportunity to save our daughter Keira’s life,” Kendra says.

Educating the Whole Child Scottsdale Christian Academy offers a Quality Education with a Christian Worldview

By Michelle Talsma Everson

“P

arents shouldn’t have to choose between a quality Christian education and a quality academic education; the two are not mutually exclusive,” says Dr. Brent M. Hodges, superintendent of Scottsdale Christian Academy (SCA). Dr. Hodges explains that generations of local families have been educated at SCA. He should know: he is a former student as are several family members and his son. “Since 1968 we’ve been providing the same premier Christian education in the Valley,” he says. “If you look at our mission statement and our history, we are deep rooted in the Christian faith and providing a rich academic experience for our students.”

SCA’s motto is to “Maximize, Prepare, Impact.”

arts, AP and dual enrollment courses, and much more.

For the past 50 years Scottsdale Christian Academy has been fulfilling its mission to maximize the God-given potential of each student, preparing them to live lives of distinction, by impacting the world for Jesus Christ, according to the school. Students in preschool through high school are discipled and mentored for holistic growth through excellent academic offerings, co-curricular activities, and service opportunities.

“For example, we close the high school one week a year, and take all the students and staff on different mission trips, both locally, regionally, and even internationally,” he shares. “By the time a student graduates, he or she will have served numerous communities in a wide variety of ways.”

With the goal of maximizing each student’s God-given potential, Dr. Hodges shares that the private school serves approximately 800 students ages preschool through 12th grade and offers a rich athletic program, fine and performing

12 • August 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

With COVID-19 still at the top of everyone’s mind, Dr. Hodges says that the school does plan on re-opening this month with enhanced cleaning and prevention measures in mind. Any modifications they are making are for the following purposes, according to staff: • First, to be in compliance with

any state and local legal orders that directly apply to us as a private school. • Second, to have processes and possible alternatives specifically for those classified as being at a higher risk or who desire them. • Third, to have health and safety actions in place which include promoting healthy hygiene, intensified cleaning and disinfecting, and protocols in place that are effective but least disruptive to a student’s learning environment. “We are adapting and adjusting to COVID-19 with students’ and staff’s health and safety in mind,” he shares. “I am proud to share that our fourth quarter last spring was successful. Our faculty and our students adapted well to remote learning.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Still, Dr. Hodges reassures that he and his staff are working hard to ensure a safe return for students. “It will be a great joy to be back on campus and returning to an environment where we are teaching and learning together, in person, as a community of Christ-followers whose confidence ultimately lies in Him,” SCA staff wrote recently to current parents of SCA students. While this school year may look a bit different, it doesn’t take away from SCA’s focus on being a Covenant model Christian school with the goal to teach students to “love God, and love others,” Dr. Hodges shares. How can local parents and caregivers know that SCA will provide a quality Christian education for their students? Dr. Hodges notes that it comes down to Biblical integration, engaging curriculum, and dedicated teachers and staff. HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS: Spiritual Life: SCA integrates Biblical study and principles into academic life and lessons. In addition to mission trips, they offer Bible studies, small group get-togethers, and weekly chapel services. SCA also involves students in weekly devotionals, and emphasizes serving others in many capacities. Earlier this year (before pandemic related travel and safety restrictions), students went on local, national and international mission trips to locations such as Belize, California, the Dominican Republic, and more. Early Childhood and Elementary School: From preschool to fifth grade, SCA helps students to develop a love of learning and faith. Staff recognizes

each student represents a tremendous potential to impact the world for Jesus Christ in whatever arena they find themselves in future years. They encourage their students to explore varied interests and find joy in the process. Education is an adventure that God uses to teach us about ourselves and grow in our understanding of His purpose for our life, according to the school. Middle School: Grades 6th, 7th and 8th encompass middle school at SCA. A middle school student at SCA is working to develop the gifts and abilities that God has given them, according to the school. During these years, students experience high school preparatory academics in all of the basic subjects combined with Bible study and several elective options. Courses like journalism, choir, Spanish, visual and performing arts, and more are all available to middle school students. High School: “We seek to serve the developmental needs of the whole student. We endeavor to maximize each student’s God-given potential. We strive to stimulate the pursuit of creative expression in academics, arts, and athletics,” is the motto for SCA students in high school. In addition to traditional topics, SCA offers state of the arts performing and visual arts opportunities as well as unique courses. “In high school, we offer many electives that contribute to a positive future,” Dr. Hodges shares. “For example, we have a personal finance course, something that often isn’t seen in other schools. Our alumni are diverse and successful. They often come back and visit, and keep in touch with classmates. Our alumni are some of our best spokespeople.”

Athletic and Fine Arts: Dr. Hodges says that it might surprise some to know that, even though SCA is a small school, they have robust athletic and fine arts programs. Upper elementary, middle school and high school students can join athletic teams, many of which have enjoyed state championships and successes. In their world-class fine arts program, Dr. Hodges says SCA offers band, choir, theater, visual arts, graphic design, photography, and broadcasting. Education for Everyone: Dr. Hodges emphasizes that SCA is a school where the whole family can go. Whether students are on an honors track and ready to excel academically, or they need some extra help in the classroom, the school is prepared to assist through their honors and Pathways programs. “People who come here are actually surprised by all that our school has to offer,” he adds. Dr. Hodges notes that one thing that might surprise locals is how affordable a Christian private school education may be. “We’re actually very socioeconomically diverse and encourage those who are interested in their children attending to reach out and see how we can help make an education here possible for their students. The opportunities for financial support in Arizona are robust. A Christian education is affordable and we can help you discover how to make this possible,” he says. “We’re about educating the whole child to become a good citizen and shine a light in the community for Christ,” he continues. For those who are interested, SCA offers on-campus tours; call 602-9925100 or visit scottsdalechristian.org to learn more.

Real Estate The Next 90 Days Might Be the Best Time Ever to Sell Your Home for Years By Scott Gaertner

S

urprisingly, Valley real estate markets are even hotter than the temperatures this summer. But many see troubling signs on the near horizon, and this could be the very best time to sell your Scottsdale North home. The included chart documents the amazing recovery the local real estate market has made since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. By any measure the recovering has been stunning, but might this be irrational exuberance? Describing his thoughts on the statistics displayed in this chart, Valley real estate authority Michale Orr of the Cromford Report says, “To be honest, I find this rather scary. This is not the behavior of a normal well-behaved market and it feels to me a little bit like the upward climb of an even bigger roller coaster than the one we rode in March and April.” Obviously his thoughts don’t spell a sea change in the market but, combined with other factors, this fall it is possible. FOREBODING FOR THIS FALL The concerns for events coming this fall vary, but they are all wrapped around the national economy. Presidential Election: For many, this election is viewed as a game-changing tipping point for the country. The consequences are viewed as dire and/or even catastrophic for the economy, the real estate market, and life in general as we know it. COVID-19 “Second Wave”: The government incentives and CARE programs are running out very soon and, with or without more bailouts, a second wave could be devastating. There are so many easy examples. A fiscal cliff

for families. Rolling business failures. In healthcare illnesses and surgeries have been delayed. Patients are suffering, and hospitals need these “elective” procedures to survive. The airlines and hospitality industries can’t indefinitely continue to provide service at the vacancies levels they have endured. Small retailers and restaurants are hanging on by threads. A second wave could be terrible economically and we are already seeing signs it could happen. Irreparable Economic Damage Already Done: The bailouts and loans have been a temporary bandaid solution but what damage has already been wrought? We are just beginning to see which business will never reopen and thousands of others that will be claiming bankruptcy protection. State and local governments across the nation are experiencing budget crisis. The ripple effect on all the providers of those industries has to be enormous. And finally, what will trillions of dollars in bailouts do to the economy?

Visiting NATIONAL MONUMENTS IN ARIZONA

By Jill Frier

A

rizona is known for its abundant natural beauty and majestic scenery. Many of our fantastic natural resources and awe-inspiring historical sights are specially preserved for the public as National Monuments. While National Parks are created through acts of Congress and must be large enough for broad recreational and educational use by the public, National Monuments are created by presidential declaration and have historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest.

MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT, CAMP VERDE

TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT, CLARKDALE Another fascinating example of the history of desert people in the Southwest is Tuzigoot National Monument. Visitors cannot only see the ruins of an ancient village built by the Sinagua people, they can walk through the rooms and touch the walls of the structure. The monument is north of Phoenix just outside Cottonwood, nestled at the foot of the mountain near Jerome. Tuzigoot is a fantastic day trip for sightseeing and a definite stop if you are planning to visit the Verde Valley.

There are officially 22 National Park Service units in Arizona, visited by nearly 12 million people and bringing in around $1 billion in economic impact annually. Thirteen of these areas are designated as National Monuments, and many of our favorite sites are just a short drive from the Valley of the Sun. CASA GRANDE RUINS NATIONAL MONUMENT, COOLIDGE

Just south of Chandler on the way to Tucson, you will find one of the largest freestanding prehistoric structures built in North America. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, this site is culturally and scientifically significant. It may have been gathering place, a community, or a waypoint marker for an extensive system of canals and trade routes. Regardless of its original purpose, the majestic “Great House” at Casa Grande Ruins is a well-preserved piece of Sonoran Desert history and a must see National Monument in Arizona. 20 • August 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

the Sonoran Desert and Roosevelt Lake are worth the journey.

If you want to head north of the Valley of the Sun, Montezuma Castle National Monument is an easy stop off Highway I-17 near Camp Verde. One of the best-preserved and most easily accessible cliff dwellings in North America, this is a beautiful place to stop on the road between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
