THE LATEST SCOOP ON SCOTTSDALE 101 SCOTTSDALE 101 – APTLY NAMED FOR ITS LOCATION OFF SCOTTSDALE ROAD AND THE LOOP 101 – IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SPOTS FOR SHOPPING, DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT IN THE NORTH VALLEY. Boasting plenty of entertainment options, dozens of specialty shops, familiar big box stores and restaurants to satisfy any craving, it’s no wonder this mixed-use complex is in high demand. Under the direction of YAM Properties, the real estate company owned by well-known businessman Bob Parsons, the center has enjoyed steady growth. All businesses in Scottsdale 101 are, of course, adhering to heightened sanitation and other preventative measures to do their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Most recently, popular franchise Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers opened in Scottsdale 101 and Goldfish Swim School is set to open this fall. The premier learn-to-swim facility is designed for children, ages 4 months to 12 years, to gain confidence and water safety through play-based learning. Other recent openings have included a diverse mix of tasty restaurants and services such as Hot and Juicy Crawfish, Oralast Health and Wellness Oral Pathology Clinic, and Camp
Bow Wow, an all-day dog daycare and boarding facility.
The popular Arizona gym, EOS Fitness, also opened a 37,000-square-foot facility featuring state-of-the-art equipment, personal training services, group fitness classes and a cycling studio. There is even more expansion on the horizon including a Starbucks drivethrough, slated to open its doors early next year. In addition to the new openings, several tenants have implemented remodels and rebranding efforts within the past year. While PINO, a quick-serve Italian eatery, added a new wine bar to its Scottsdale 101 location, the popular breakfast joint previously known as N’Counter, underwent a rebrand and is now Daily Jam. In total, Scottsdale 101 is home to more than 50 diverse businesses including C2 Tactical, Escape Room 101, Cien Agaves and Bowlero, a 32-lane bowling alley complete with a restaurant, bar and arcade. And, of course, the iconic Harkins Theaters Cine Capri. This relocated, reincarnation of a classic Phoenix attraction continues to draw multitudes of moviegoers every night of the week. GREGORY UMPHREY, SAW THE EXPLOSION OF A DREAM COME TRUE WHEN THEY PUBLICLY LAUNCHED ELEVATEMED, A LOCAL NONPROFIT. ElevateMeD is committed to elevating the field of medicine by providing financial support and mentorship to future physicians of historically underrepresented backgrounds. In its first year, the Scottsdale-based organization has established a diverse board of directors whose efforts have raised more than $200,000 toward their scholarship program. The obstacles this physician couple faced on their journey are what many students from underrepresented backgrounds will face in their pursuit of medicine. According to The American Medical Student Association, “cost is the top reason qualified minority students reported not enrolling in medical school.” This is one contributing factor to our nation’s disproportionate representation in the medical field, directly impacting health disparities like those reported during COVID-19. ElevateMeD is on a mission to increase physician workforce diversity and improve cultural competence among physicians to reduce those health disparities. After accruing and paying off more than $300,000 in combined medical school debt, Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey and Dr. Gregory Umphrey saw ElevateMeD as a solution to create lasting change for the next generation of physician leaders. ElevateMeD is committed to providing that support through the Scholars Program, a multifaceted program designed to annually provide 10 recipients a $10,000 scholarship during each year of their medical program, physician mentorship, access to peer network support, leadership development opportunities, and financial management education. This year’s cohort of scholars include: Aaron Bia (University of Arizona), Anthony Osifuye (University of Minnesota), Christian Freeman (Emory University), Gabriela Alejo (UT Southwestern Medical Center), Harvey Lewis (Howard University), Kalonji Cole (Charles R. These brilliant medical students embody the drive, resilience, and tenacity that is required to affect change regarding the disparities we see in health care.” The COVID-19 pandemic continues to reveal the importance of the ElevateMeD mission and hope for the future of health care. Risk Tolerance – Time to Change? By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor

It influences our thoughts around risk and ability to manage emotions around risk. When we think about risk, we are really considering the impact of how much are we willing to accept when markets are falling. However, you may want to think about it in two ways. The first is how much are you willing to accept in annual performance reporting. The second is how much are you willing to accept in market corrections. History (1948 – 2018) shows us that the markets experience about three 5% declines per year, one 10% decline about every year, one 15% decline roughly every four years, and a 20% decline
“Should I change my risk tolerance?” This is a common question during volatile markets, albeit mostly during down markets, both on reducing and taking on more risk. TIPS FOR POSITIVE FAMILY COMMUNICATION DURING COVID-19
By Michael Aurit, JD, MDR, and Karen Aurit, LAMFT
F
amilies are facing some very difficult conversations now that Arizona has re-opened. A range of strong opinions about social distancing and safety precautions may cause family conflict if communication breakdowns and negative emotional reactions go unchecked. Even some spouses are split over best practices during the pandemic. Enter extended families into the equation and the range of opinions can quickly become a heated blame game. Some family members would rather not have any conversation at this point. Some are consumed with fear and anxiety. Some are focused on the science and support adhering to CDC guidelines and social distancing protocols. Others question the level of risk or prefer to return to normal, even acknowledging the potential for negative health outcomes within our community. Family conflict is nothing new and can be overcome when family members are committed to healthy communication with the help of some mutually agreed upon guidelines for conversations. You could propose your own version of the following suggested communication guidelines to ensure less conflict and better family discussions: • We will be respectful of one another and respect all opinions as valid. • We will make proposals about how to connect as a family instead of making demands. Family members prefer to be “asked” if they are willing to do something compared to be “told” what they should do. • We will be open to compromising whenever we can all “live with” a solution that isn’t perfect but works for everyone. • We will avoid interrupting as best we can and ensure that each person’s voice is heard.
• We will listen carefully to understand how each person sees the situation so we can “see the world through his or her eyes.” • We will stay positive and be gentle with each other, rather than placing blame or becoming judgmental. • We will acknowledge that we all love one another and want to be close again. The pandemic is temporary, but our family is forever. • We accept that we won’t all agree 100% of the time. If we disagree, we respect each person’s right to make his or her own decisions. Once you all agree on guidelines, schedule a family talk. Start with a fun activity to celebrate being together, maybe a virtual dance challenge, silliest joke exchange, or perhaps a rousing chorus of “We are Family.” When you begin, be prepared for a difficult conversation. There may be feelings of frustration. Remember, no one has all the right answers in this unique situation. The whole family can choose to use this as a wonderful opportunity to show love and compassion even when you disagree. If your family is struggling to communicate effectively, be prepared to call a “cease-fire” to give everyone time to cool off before regrouping. If relationships are in danger over COVID-related issues, seek professional help from a professional family mediator or family therapist. These professional services are often available online and can help your family to discuss difficult issues peacefully. Michael Aurit is a professional divorce mediator, Arizona attorney, and co-founder of The Aurit Center for Divorce Mediation. EDUCATION
THE IMPORTANCE OF SUMMER READING By Michelle Talsma Everson
A
recent study of children in the third to fifth grades showed that students lost an average of 20 percent of their school year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school year gains in math during summer break, according to Scholastic. com. With this school year already disrupted due to COVID-19, experts note that now, more than ever before, it’s crucial to encourage students of all ages to read during the summer. One local resource for busy families is the Read On Arizona website at readonarizona.org. On the website, you can use the “Find a Book” tool to find books that meet your child’s interest and reading level; use a reading log to track time spent reading; and find other helpful educational resources. Another resource for families includes Read Across America’s Kids Summer Reading List website at readacrossamerica.org/kids-summer-reading-list. Here, families can find an array of reading resources, book recommendations, and parenting tips. Some ideas include joining the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, where you receive digital rewards, or the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, where young readers can earn a free book after reading eight books. What can parents do to help reverse the “Summer Slide” (when children lose their reading and math
skills over the summer)? Scholastic.com recommends that parents allow children to read the books they’re most interested in; make time for “smart play,” such as games and puzzles; allow kids to use their imagination through imaginative play such as LEGO, etc.; and join a summer reading program at your local library.
The Scottsdale Library’s Summer Reading Program, Imagine Your Story, take place now through August 1. People of all ages can sign up online and earn points for every minute they read. Game boards for children can be picked up at the drive-thru windows of Appaloosa, Arabian and Mustang Libraries, curbside at Civic Center Library, or parents can download and print out game boards through the website. Prize packs for the completion of the program will be available later in the summer. More information and details on how to sign up can be found at ScottsdaleLibrary.org/summerreading. “This year’s Summer Reading Program is more important than ever for kids since they have spent the last quarter learning online,” says Jennifer WongOrtiz, community engagement and outreach coordinator at Scottsdale Public Library.

“Parents can model this behavior by signing up themselves and reading daily with their kids. Simply spending 20 minutes a day reading will help maintain the reading abilities and skills that will prepare kids to go back to school in the fall.”

he COVID-19 pandemic has certainly allowed us all to do things differently and adapt our lifestyles and habits, whether we wanted to or not. In the Cave Creek Unified District (CCUSD), we started adapting in mid-March when Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman closed all Arizona public schools. Our teaching and learning department and our principals, along with lead teachers, worked tirelessly to make sure that after our spring break, our students transitioned seamlessly to virtual schools rather than our typical brick and mortar classrooms. To assist families with technology needs, CCUSD loaned out 1,044 Chromebooks and 15 hotspots so that students would have the tools to continue their studies at home. I could not be prouder of the quick but thorough work our staff produced to make all this happen, including our technology department that continues to man the help desk.
Closed schools also meant that our students who receive meal assistance would still need to have meals during the week. Our child nutrition department wrote for a state waiver to allow CCUSD to feed any child in the community under 18 years old by receiving meals distributed daily in front of Cactus Shadows High School. In addition, Subway owner, Jeff Weckstein, donated Subway sandwiches for the first three weeks of the closure. Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek is providing 70 family meals per week for those needing assistance, jumpstarted with a $2,000 donation from Carefree Kiwanis and private donations from the community, including out-of-state donors. In addition, some community members have generously donated their stimulus checks to support our food distribution. Carefree Floors in Cave Creek donated carpet cleaning for the district buildings and Mission Grove Church donated ten $100 gift cards for staff needing
support. An anonymous donor gave $10,000 to support repairs and purchase of Chromebooks that students use for their lessons. We are grateful for such strong support despite being a relatively small community.
Our schools know that our students are missing their classmates and teachers, and our staff are missing the smiles and hugs from our students. Some of our elementary schools have hosted “car parades” where our teachers stand in the parking lot six feet apart with their masks on and our families drive through with signs, balloons and banners on their vehicles. At Black Mountain Elementary School, their spring musical, “Annie,” was cancelled so they put together a virtual production so everyone could still enjoy the performance. Our eighth graders and high school seniors have received signs for their front yards to congratulate them and
both Sonoran Trails Middle School and Cactus Shadows High School have a display wall where promoting or graduating students can post pictures for a group collage. Our CCUSD social media has been highlighting individual CSHS seniors with a picture and what their plans are post-high school. Above all, we cannot change the unprecedented situation the pandemic has caused, but like all situations, it is how we choose to handle things that makes us resilient and strong.

The Importance of Estate Planning with a Professional ATTORNEY LIBBY BANKS HELPS LOCALS PLAN FOR THE FUTURE
A
By Michelle Talsma Everson
ttorney Libby Banks is passionate about a unique area of law—so passionate in fact, it’s what she focuses on exclusively. Banks’ area of expertise is estate planning, probate and trust administration. Essentially, she helps clients of all ages plan for what happens to their estates if they are incapacitated or after they pass away. It’s an important topic that many may not realize impacts not only them but their loved ones as well. “I’ve been an attorney for many years, and about 10 years ago, I began working with another attorney who specialized in the big probate fights – fights over the money when there is no will or no valid estate plan,” Banks explains. “I saw families fall apart when the fight escalated and the court got involved through the probate process [a court-supervised process of authenticating and administering an estate or a last will and testament]. I wanted to go into the preventative side. For the past eight years, it’s all that I’ve done.” “I value family above almost everything, and these cases broke my heart,” she adds. “I decided to go into estate planning to help people avoid these painful, unnecessary family fights.”

scottsdalenorthnews.com
Banks says that estate planning is something that you can do at any age, once you’re over 18, and in any financial situation. “You need to think of what your current financial and life situation is,” she says. “For example, if you have children, you not only need to plan financially, but for guardianship of your children as well.” Estate planning, she explains, is all about selecting someone to make sure your estate is managed properly and for planning how you will distribute your assets as well. The goal is to create a plan, then keep it updated so it grows with you—for example, your estate plan would look different if you’re single with no children then 10 years later when you’re married with a child. What are some downsides to not planning? There are many, Banks shares, including unforeseen consequences for, say, blended families. Essentially, a sound estate plan helps you to advocate for your loved ones and makes sure that your wishes are respected. “Something to keep in mind, too, is that an estate plan names the right person to make decisions for you if you’re incapacitated; it’s not just about planning for when you pass away,” she adds. One misconception about estate planning is that some may try to do it themselves or go to attorneys who do not specialize in the practice. Like all important, vital tasks though, Banks says it’s best to leave something this crucial to a professional. “If you don’t do the job right and you don’t know you’ve made a mistake, it may well be too late before you – or more likely, your family – finds out,” she explains. “Without proper estate planning, your family may end up in court. If you are alive and incapacitated, they may be required to take you to court to declare you unable to handle your affairs and appoint a guardian and conservator. That is a public proceeding. If you are deceased, they may have to file a probate to transfer your property to your heirs. If you left your assets to minor children, the court will be involved in the expenditures until scottsdalenorthnews.com
COVER STORY
the children turn 18 – at which point the children get all the money turned over to them to handle. All of these things can cause major headaches and great expense for your loved ones.”
“As an estate planning attorney, I know what to recommend for you based on your situation, your beneficiaries, your assets, and your goals and dreams,” she continues. “You may not know all the ways you can benefit your heirs, or all the ways you can cause problems for them with a poorly drafted will or trust.” While some may worry about the cost of the planning process, Banks assures that it’s well worth the price. “The cost for a guardian or conservatorship if you are incapacitated [or for your minor children] and the cost of a probate on your death usually far exceeds the price of an estate plan put in place while you are alive and well,” she explains. “Putting the right plan in place, using an experienced attorney, will save your family heartache and expense. Knowing they will thank you for making it easier on them – that’s priceless!” Banks shares that with the right estate plan, you can: • Rest assured that your family or friends can step in if an emergency happens to take care of your health and of your finances. • Avoid probate and quickly transfer your property. • Minimize taxes, including capital gains taxes. • Provide a guardian for your minor children. • Designate that a trustee governs the money spent on your minor children, and that person can be separate from the guardian. • Protect your inheritance from your beneficiaries’ creditors and from their divorcing spouses. Banks shares that the estate planning process is a lot easier than some may think. “You can get started now, even though we’re social distancing, through a free-of-charge consultation over Zoom, FaceTime, or the phone,” she shares.
Estate planning prices vary based on the situation and the free consultation involves a free estimate on how much a plan would cost, Banks adds.
In addition to her busy practice, Banks is actively involved in the local community. She is a supporter of the local nonprofit Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump!, whose mission is to “provide free breast health education, mammograms, testing, and direct assistance to breast cancer patients with wigs, support and resources in Arizona,” according to the organization. She also recently started supporting Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels, a local nonprofit that works “to bring dignity and comfort into the harsh world of childhood cancer and other lifethreatening diseases.” “Being active in helping nonprofits keeps me connected to the local community,” Banks says. While many of her clients come
from the immediate area, Banks says that she can serve people from across the Valley. In addition to her business and volunteering, Banks works with her husband of 32 years, Andy, at her law office. He serves as the business’ administrator and marketing director. “Clients and locals will often see him behind the scenes at my community seminars,” Banks shares. The long-time couple have been in the Valley for twenty years and have three grown children. One of their children, John, is the firm’s paralegal. “Between volunteering for local nonprofits, networking with other local businesses, and serving clients, it’s all about helping fellow Arizonans to me,” Banks says. CREATE THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR GRILLING SPACE Contributed by BBQ Island
F
ood is always a plus when it comes to bringing friends and family together, making your grill the centerpiece of your backyard. After all, who doesn’t love a great barbecue? Here are eight tips for creating the ultimate outdoor grilling space. 1. PLAN CAREFULLY. As with any outdoor project, it’s essential to map things out before you get started. Put some thought into what you’d like in your ideal finished outdoor space. What kind of features do you want? Consider the appliances, surfaces, and utilities you’ll need, and think about whether you’ll be able to design this space yourself or will need to hire a contractor. 2. DESIGN WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND. A high-quality outdoor grilling space will last your family for generations.
When in doubt, add any features you may eventually want now since it’s easier to install electrical, plumbing, and heating utilities earlier rather than later.
3. ADD CABINETRY. Nice cabinets may seem like a luxury, but this is a great way to improve the layout and upgrade the appearance of your outdoor grilling space. You need space to stash your utensils, cookware, and other must-haves, and you won’t want to keep running back and forth to the house. 4. ALWAYS ADD A VENT HOOD. A vent hood will help reroute moisture and grease, preventing staining and other damage to your surrounding walls and the rest of your home. Most areas have building codes requiring ventilation systems in your grilling area if you’re placing it under another structure, like a pavilion or pergola.
5. PROVIDE SHADE. Speaking of pergolas and pavilions, a shaded area is a must. Spending time outdoors is essential for our health and well-being, but there’s nothing worse than baking in the summer sun with no relief in sight. 7. ADD A FIRE PIT. A fire pit is great for allowing your guests to get cozier and it’s a great conversation piece that guests love to gather around. It will allow you to extend your grilling season into the winter months.
CROSSWORD SOLUTION FROM PAGE 16
8. DON’T NEGLECT THE LANDSCAPING. Just because your grilling station is an extension of your indoor kitchen, you shouldn’t ignore the other outdoor elements that come into play. Be sure to keep the lawn properly mowed, edged, and irrigated. You can also place tall potted plants around your patio as a moveable barrier.

REAL ESTATE
LOCAL REAL ESTATE BEFORE COVID-19, AND NOW By Scott Gaertner
A
Case-Shiller report released April 28 showed that Phoenix topped the nation in home price growth immediately before the COVID-19 crisis hit. According to the report, Phoenix’s 7.5% year over year growth beat out Seattle and Tampa for the top spot in the nation. While the report was released at the end of April, the data used was through the end of February. (Note: February 27 was the night of our 2020 market forecast event discussing the unprecedentedly good real estate market.) That honestly seems like a lifetime ago now. EARLY-PANDEMIC PANIC The COVID-19 pandemic hit fast and hard, catching real estate buyers, sellers, and certainly this real estate broker, flatfooted. We are blessed to be selling in Scottsdale North with communities so many people want to be a part of, but March and April were brutal months. Buying or selling homes with no clue where the national economy is headed, to buyers who often can not even physically enter the home, is challenging. Everyone was on edge and cancellations were higher than I can ever remember with terrible reasons for canceling. Due to the prolonged seller’s market, buyers saw the pandemic as an opportunity to have the upper hand in negotiations for the first time in months. But for many, that same uncertainty that created the opportunity proved too large of an obstacle and they backed out of the purchases.
Another reason for higher cancelations is that out-of-state buyers are making offers without actually visiting the properties. Often the buyer’s agent does not share the fact that the buyers have not visited the property with the seller’s agent. This is important information to know when evaluating the strength of the offer, particularly if you have multiple offers. Pro tip: If the buyer’s agent only communicates via text and e-mails, and never speaks to your agent, there is a good chance this is the reason. They are afraid a conversation will reveal the weakness in the offer. We are having every agent attest by e-mail whether the buyer has been in the home or not. Speaking of this early pandemic phase, Tina Tamboer, senior housing analyst for The Cromford Report, says home sales in the existing resale market were sharply lower in April, reflective of the six-week decline in accepted contracts following the stock market crash at the end of February. Tamboer says, “Travel restrictions caused by stay-at-home orders and struggling investment portfolios put a damper on the luxury market and retirement communities, which were benefiting the most from inbound migration.”
WHAT COMES NEXT? Even though housing supply is 28% higher than it was seven weeks ago, metro Phoenix is still in short supply of resale homes, with under 13,000 active listings. At this time of year, anywhere between 25,000 and 30,000 listings would be what we consider a “normal” market. Clearly there is more demand than what we have for sale right now. As Michael Orr from Cromford says it: “A clear case can be made that the housing market will not be dramatically affected by the pandemic over the long term, no matter how severe the jolt may be in the short term... Even with the gloomiest of forecasts, Central Arizona has more demand for homes to live in than it has homes available. This is not 2006.”
So if you are looking to buy, the pandemic has created a window of opportunity. If you are looking to sell, now is a great time while the world economy sorts out the real-world effects of all these unprecedented job losses and the acquisition of unheard of governmental debt. Either way, we are here for you.
For more updated information or suggestions on how to succeed in the market as it exists today, give us a call at 480-634-5000. Now more than ever, nobody sells more homes in Scottsdale North than the Scott Gaertner Group. Scott Gaertner is an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Northeast, who for the past 25+ years has helped more people to find their lifestyle niche in the Scottsdale North area than anyone else. He also contributes his thoughts on lifestyle interests in the area.

THINGS ARE BEGINNING TO TURN I write these articles almost three weeks before the newspaper hits your mailboxes, but as of this writing, things have begun to turn. The country’s economic future is still unclear, but the road ahead for real estate is looking good. The state dropped the stay-at-home directive and mortgage applications are up significantly, which means buyers are gearing up. The listings under contract statistics have stopped their free fall and also

begun to go up. The Cromford Chart below shows that they reached the bottom on April 15 and began moving up.

GETAWAY
Visiting THE MO G OLLON RIM L
By Jill Frier
ooking for some less frequented spots in Arizona where you can see stunning views and tall pine forests? Head north of Fountain Hills on State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, and take a road trip to Rim Country. The inspiration of early 20th century Western author Zane Grey, and the site of the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona, the Mogollon Rim area offers stunning views of ponderosa pines from overlooks as high as 2,000 feet. Running along Highway 260 from Sedona to Payson to Pinetop-Lakeside and eventually to the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, some of our favorite areas in Rim Country are just a short drive from the Valley. The Mogollon Rim is a fantastic location for hiking, sightseeing, and horseback riding, as well as a great getaway for boating and fishing, camping, hunting, and backcountry skiing in the winter. Tiny towns settled along the Rim offer a fascinating slice of Arizona history with museums, ruins, natural wonders, and points of interest all along the route. Certain areas off the main road are rugged, and often steep, so prepare to take a high-clearance vehicle if you want to venture farther off the beaten path. Here are our favorite spots to stop when we head north to Rim Country:
PAYSON As you head for Payson and the Mogollon Rim on the Beeline Highway, you will pass through some of the most gorgeous pristine desert and mountain vistas in Arizona. At an elevation of about 5,000 feet, the town of Payson offers a mild, four season climate in the tall pines. This small town of about 15,000 was founded in 1882 and is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest and the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation. Payson is an excellent location for year-round outdoor activities including hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, camping, rock hounding, and horseback riding. The town’s centrally located Green Valley Park has three stocked fishing lakes and free outdoor concerts in the summer. Dubbed “The Gateway to Rim Country,” Payson is steeped in Arizona history and hosts the world’s oldest continuous rodeo. scottsdalenorthnews.com
PINE Heading northwest out of Payson on Highway 260, you’ll arrive at the tiny community of Pine. With a population of around 2,000, Pine is the gateway to the Tonto Natural Bridge, nestled in the valley of Pine Creek, which flows under the bridge to the East Verde River. Originally settled by a group of four families, Pine is full of fascinating history and boasts some great attractions such as the post office established in 1884 and the Pine-Strawberry Museum. Pine is a great destination for hiking, camping, and fishing, with Bear Canyon Lake and Knoll Lake nearby. There are also several good restaurants, charming local shops and antique stores, and a gas station to fill up before you head down the road. This is the last gas stop before Camp Verde if you’re heading west on 260, so make sure your tank is full.
TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK The Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located in Pine on the Mogollon Rim. A steeply graded, but paved, road takes you down to the Visitor’s Center and unassuming parking lot that sits just above a tremendous spectacle of nature. Don’t be fooled by the peaceful, idyllic, tree-lined meadow and picnic tables, because as you move toward the edge of the picnic area, you see a giant drop into the stream below. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a natural spring-fed stream that flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.
STRAWBERRY Strawberry is a beautiful and picturesque spot to stop and rest as you travel along the Mogollon Rim. This tiny unincorporated town has a population of around 1,000, but it has natural charm in abundance. Always one of our favorite places to stop for a big breakfast after a hike through the woods or an early morning visit to the Tonto Natural Bridge, Strawberry is a great place for hiking, camping, cabins, and Arizona territorial days history. One must-see site in town is the Strawberry Schoolhouse, the oldest schoolhouse still standing in the state of Arizona. The mild climate and seasonal changes along the higher elevations of the Mogollon Rim make it a great destination to visit all year round. Be sure to check LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas of great places to getaway and visit in Arizona.

ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEKS: DINE IN OR TAKE OUT
W
hen COVID-19 threatened the very core of the food and beverage industry with closures in mid-March, restaurant owners responded in turn — showing their strength by quickly adapting their business models to offer takeout, curbside and delivery options, and the widely embraced cocktails to go. The local community showed up, too, in support of these very restaurants that make up the Valley’s dynamic culinary scene. With the mandates, however, one of the most beloved culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, was placed on hold while Arizona Takeout Weeks stepped in to encourage continued dining support. Meanwhile, the Arizona Restaurant Association created Arizona Restaurant Strong, a relief fund to provide funding for restaurant workers that found themselves immediately out of work due to closures surrounding the virus.

Now, the Arizona Restaurant Association is pleased to announce that Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out (ARW) will take place from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 28 and Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27. “We are so grateful for the support of our local dining community in the weeks that followed restaurant closures in March,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “The quick creation of Arizona Takeout Weeks and Arizona Restaurant Strong efforts could not have been possible without them. As Arizona Restaurant Weeks
returns in a modified format to include dine-in, take out and liquor to go options, we are hopeful that our wonderful community of food enthusiasts will continue to show their support in any way they feel comfortable.”
During the new Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines for opening and social distancing, whether dining in or taking out. The ARA is anticipating more than 200 of the Valley’s most beloved restaurants — from five-star fine dining establishments to locally owned and operated “mom and pop” hidden gems — to get involved. As in years past, participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated menus that showcase local chefs’ creative talents through innovative dishes. Featuring a unique tasting opportunity apart from their regular menus, restaurants will offer three-course, prix-fixe menus for just $33 or $44 per person. Wine pairings to enhance each course are offered at some establishments for an additional cost. New and returning restaurants are welcome and encouraged to participate in this year’s ARW events. Applications can be completed online at arizonarestaurantweek.com/restaurant-participation. Diners can view a complete list of participating restaurants for Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out online at arizonarestaurantweek.com. The list is updated and restaurants’ ARW menus are added as participants continue to join.
