Official Investigation Crimps Panel Supplies for U.S. Solar Industry But savvy customers can still get a good deal. By Erick O’Donnell We reported just last October about the economic rain clouds looming over the American clean energy movement as inflation threatened rising costs for solar companies and their customers. Well, when it rains, it really does pour. Now a government investigation into alleged tariff circumvention by Chinese panel manufacturers is inflicting severe supply disruptions on American solar installers, threatening to curtail the nation’s clean energy transition. A survey of 200 American solar companies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that 74 percent have had orders canceled in the wake of the investigation. “This is the biggest threat I’ve seen in my 15 years in the solar industry,” said John Smirnow, general counsel and chief marketing strategist for the SEIA. The inquiry was launched by the Department of Commerce in response to a complaint filed in February by Auxin Solar, which alleged that various panel exporters in Southeast Asian countries were owned by Chinese companies and were being used to bypass tariffs set up by the Trump administration. Val Berechet, co-founder and CEO of Arizona-based installer SunSolar Solutions, predicted that some companies will go out of business after being caught unprepared. A reliable source told Berechet that a “major manufacturer” had just canceled a 100-megawatt order of panels and raised prices 20 percent on its remaining stock. The price of a certain panel used by SunSolar has gone up 62 percent since last April. “It’s insane,” Berechet said. Not that he’s sweating it. SunSolar has spent the past few months carefully preparing to thrive in an environment marked by severe

disruption, leveraging long-established industry relationships to boost the company’s panel inventory and thereby build a buffer against supply shocks, Berechet said. The company is also taking care not to commit to projects for which the availability of materials is not certain, he said. “From our end, it’s all about being informed and being on top of it,” Berechet said. “It’s about having plans so we can deliver to customers.” “I do feel confident in our ability to get through this challenging time,” he added. Berechet foresees severe trouble for companies that are not as prepared as SunSolar. “People who are not prepared, not on top of this, will absolutely be blindsided,” he said. For homeowners thinking about going solar, the recent supply shock only increases the urgency of the decision. Panel prices have been steadily creeping up because of general supply-chain issues, and Berechet predicts significant and durable increases in ultimate project costs. For example, a rooftop-installation project making use of the panels that cost 62 percent more this year will ultimately cost the customer about 20 percent more than before. The rush by customers to take advantage of today’s lower prices will only jack up the pressure on stragglers to commit. “There’s a ton of demand and limited supply,” Berechet said. “And demand will only increase, given this.” Even in these times of economic and political volatility, time can be on your side—if you’re willing to take action. SunSolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Call us today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Arizona Restaurant Week Delights Diners with 10 Days of Culinary Exploration Popular Dining Event Is Back From May 20-29 By Molly Cerreta Smith Photos Courtesy of Timothy Fox Photography LET THE DINING BEGIN! The Arizona Restaurant Association’s most anticipated event of the season is almost here. The 2022 Spring Arizona Restaurant Week, 10 days of dining deliciousness, begins Friday, May 20 and runs through Sunday, May 29. During this event, diners can enjoy incredible deals and new creative menus at some of the hottest fine dining establishments in the state as well as at restaurants that remain among the Valley’s best hidden gems. Spring Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW) offers specific three-course menus at participating restaurants throughout the state. During this time, many chefs take the opportunity to create specialty dishes that aren’t generally on their menu, using seasonal and hard-to-find or on-trend ingredients to provide guests with a truly memorable dining experience. As the restaurant industry continues to navigate labor shortages, cost increases

4 • May 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

and limited supplies, the Arizona Restaurant Association added an additional price point last year to help offset the rising industry costs. The three price points still present the state’s dining community with the most delicious way to explore Arizona’s culinary scene for a great deal while allowing restaurants greater range to provide diners with an even more elevated dining experience. The three price points on ARW menus are $33, $44 or $55 per person, and even per couple in some instances. Restaurants also may opt to feature wine pairings for each course at an additional cost. With the various price points and wine pairing options, there are many ways that diners can customize their ARW experiences to suit their preferences. “Arizona Restaurant Week serves as a time to showcase the state’s culinary breadth and highlight the talent of chefdriven establishments while giving diners an opportunity to try new menus for a great deal,” says Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve

Chucri. “With dine-in and take-out options and a variety of dining choices including high-end and independently owned best-kept secrets, we encourage diners to use Arizona Restaurant Week as an opportunity to support the industry while enjoying an incredible meal.” The Arizona Restaurant Association (ARA) has been presenting Arizona Restaurant Week for more than 15 years. As an advocate for the hospitality industry, the ARA works diligently to support the industry and present opportunities to help promote the restaurants around the state that contribute vibrantly to the state’s economy as well as its diverse dining scene. Since COVID-19 and the subsequent labor, food and supply shortages, rising prices and massive inflation, the restaurant industry has faced multiple challenges over the past few years. The ARA has responded quickly to each challenge, modifying Arizona Restaurant Week to provide take-out options at the height of restaurant dine-

in closures and evolving the program again with additional price points to help restaurants continue to provide an incredible dining experience while recognizing the vast price hikes they are facing. That’s why it’s more important than ever for the local dining community and the culinary curious to get out and support Arizona’s restaurants. And ARW provides an ideal opportunity to get a true taste of each restaurant at a significant discount. “Throughout the pandemic, the state’s culinary community continued to show support in any way they could, even in modified ways,” says Chucri. “Our industry could not continue without the support of our loyal diners; we are so grateful for everyone that dines out and joins us during Arizona Restaurant Week.” A complete list of Spring Arizona Restaurant Week participants and their menus is available on at arizonarestaurantweek.com.

An Update on the Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park Project THE ASHLER HILLS NEIGHBORHOOD PARK PROJECT HAS BEEN A HOT TOPIC IN SCOTTSDALE NORTH FOR YEARS. We recently talked to Nick Molinari, Scottsdale Parks & Recreation’s director, to learn about the latest developments.

Based on feedback received during the first open house, an exercise course was added to the walking path, improvements and shade were added to the pickleball courts, and additional details were provided about the lighting plan. The design team will look over feedback from the second virtual open house and evaluate options.

Scottsdale North News (SNN): What is the latest news on the park project? Molinari: The planning process for Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park is underway and the city of Scottsdale recently completed a second virtual public open house process to solicit further feedback on updated design elements in the park site plan.

SNN: What are the next steps in the process? Molinari: The project will now move into the structured planning process and public meetings will soon be scheduled with the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Development Review Board, the Planning Commission, and, ultimately, Scottsdale City Council. At

this point those meeting dates have not been established, but the project team is working to establish a timeline as soon as possible. SNN: What is the background on this project? Molinari: The Ashler Hills Neighborhood Park project was included in Scottsdale’s 2019 Bond Election, which was approved by voters in November of 2019. The project was titled “Build a 17-Acre Neighborhood Park at Ashler Hills and 74th Way (Whisper Rock).”

Wildland Fire Fuel Mitigation Continues in North Scottsdale

Information and Photo Courtesy of the Scottsdale Fire Department

AS THE WILDFIRE SEASON APPROACHES, THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS CONTINUING FIRE/FUEL MITIGATION PROJECTS IN AND AROUND THE NORTH SCOTTSDALE AREA. The city continues to work in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Arizona State Land Department, and the U.S.D.A. Tonto National Forest. Scottsdale Preserve and Scottsdale Fire Department staff are also coordinating with adjacent communities, Maricopa County, adjacent cities, and other Scottsdale City departments in these efforts, including Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Sanitation, and Field Services. The purpose of this work is to reduce fire/fuels in strategically targeted areas to reduce the threat of wildfires starting, and to provide defensible spaces that can slow the spread of a fire. Attention is being focused along roadway edges in and around the Preserve, School Trust Lands, and key alignments within the Preserve that function as fuel breaks to stop or slow the forward movement of potential wildfires. HERE ARE SOME RECENT PROJECTS THAT THE CITY HAS COMPLETED TO HELP WILDLIFE FIRE FUEL MITIGATION: Rio Verde Drive Fuel Management Project: Contractors working on behalf of the city of Scottsdale conducted a

vegetation thinning project on the north side of Rio Verde Drive from 122nd Street to 136th Street, and on the south side of Rio Verde Drive from 122nd Street to 128th Street. Crews removed annual grasses, thinned the density of shrubs, and removed the lower branches on some trees to alleviate ladder fuels. This work reduced the threat of a fire starting and/or spreading north or south into the Preserve. Similar work was done by the same crews last year on the west side of 136th Street from Rio Verde Drive to the Tonto National Forest Boundary.

Arizona State Land Department (School Trust Lands) Project 1: Contractors working on behalf of the city of Scottsdale conducted a vegetation thinning project in the square of Dynamite Boulevard and Pima, Jomax and Hayden roads. Crews removed annual grasses, thinned the density of shrubs, and removed the lower branches on some trees to alleviate ladder fuels. This work will reduce the threat of a fire starting and/or spreading outside of the state of Arizona lands. Similar work was done in 2019 and 2020 on the east side of North Pima Road between E. Dynamite and Legends Trail Parkway.

Jomax Road over to 90th Street. Crews removed annual grasses, thinning the density of shrubs, and removing the lower branches on some trees to alleviate ladder fuels. This work will reduce the threat of a fire starting and/or spreading outside of the state of Arizona lands. Similar work was done in 2019 and 2020 on the east side of North Pima Road between Dynamite and Legends Trail Parkway.

between East Jomax Road and I-101 (approximately 4.5 miles). Crews removed annual grasses, heavy dead and down fuels, thinned the density of shrubs, and removed the lower branches on some trees to remove ladder fuels and reduce crown fire potential. This work will reduce the threat of a fire starting and/or spreading outside of the state of Arizona Lands into the wildland urban interface.

Arizona State Land Department (School Trust Lands) Project 3: Just completed on May 1, contractors working on behalf of the city of Scottsdale conducted a vegetation thinning project on the west side of Scottsdale Road

Residents can help these efforts by reducing fuels appropriately on their property. To learn more about how to reduce wildfires around your home and neighborhood, visit scottsdaleaz.gov/fire/ wild-fire-prevention.

“Unapologetically Enough”

A Local Writer Releases Her Debut Novel on May 24 Images Courtesy of Carrie Severson WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ENOUGH? For years, local entrepreneur and writer Carrie Severson struggled with her own enoughness.

Shining the light of love on both the good and the bad of that process, Severson shares her soul quest and how she learned to navigate her own enoughness. With honesty, tenderness, and vulnerability, she taps into a powerful shared reality, illuminating the experiences so many women go through as they, too, struggle to define success and self-love.

Like so many women, she constantly questioned if she was thin enough, wealthy enough, young enough, or fertile enough. But instead of finding answers, she ended up battling professional and personal burnout by the time she was 35. Once she had a grip on her happiness again, she put her full attention on her love life. As a single woman, without her own children, she decided to create a Plan B and a Plan C for herself.

“Unapologetically Enough” is a raw, relatable story of what happens when one woman stops questioning everything about herself and her life and starts questioning what her life could be like if she accepted herself as enough.

After two failed rounds of IVF, and many bad dates, she finally came to the realization that to feel like she was enough, she had to heal herself and create massive change in her life.

“Unapologetically Enough” is available for pre-order anywhere books are sold and will be released on May 24. For more information, visit unapologeticallyenough. com.

Complete with exercises to help readers redefine their own thoughts about success and self-love, this memoir was written to inspire and support women on their own journeys of self-discovery.

These writers are all ages—from accomplished published authors to first time writers. Summer Water Safety STAY COOL AND SAFE WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS

By Jill Frier

S

ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for the Valley of the Sun, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies, and first responders come out in droves this time of year cautioning parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including lakes, canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs, and ponds. Anyone who cares for children should be aware of the potential dangers and possible tragedies of drowning. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your kids safe around water as the weather warms up and pools become more attractive to children everywhere. PREVENTING DROWNING In addition to teaching kids how to swim, the best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone or the iPad down and be sure to always keep children within reach of an adult. Never leave a child alone around a

water source. It only takes two inches of water and a few seconds to drown. OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT DROWNING: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house. • Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys, or ladders away from pool fences. • Teach your children to always ask for permission to go near the water so they develop quality water safety habits at an early age. • Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area and don’t store toys near the pool. • Don’t allow anyone to swim alone – always swim with a buddy. • Drink plenty of water, even if you aren’t thirsty, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. • Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices near the pool and readily available. • Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are near a pool or water source and take the kids with you when you leave the area. • If a child is missing, check the water first because every second counts to prevent drowning.

• Make sure everyone in your family, children and adults, learn to swim. • Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after you use them. Store containers upside down so they don’t collect water and keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Do you know what to do in an emergency? Accidents are unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, whether a child or an adult. THE MAIN STEPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU FIND SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN A WATER EMERGENCY ARE: 1. Yell for help and pull the person out of the water. 2. Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions. 3. Begin CPR, if you know it. 4. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.

Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life. LEARNING TO SWIM One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning. There are many options for swimming lessons and a range of prices, times, and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town or go to a city pool or nonprofit community center. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy our almost year-round sunshine by the swimming pool, lake, or pond. Water is a great way to cool off and have fun but take steps to be safe and prevent accidents or drowning while you splash around.

It’s Water Safety Month! Now is the time to plan by enrolling your little fish in swim lessons. While we’re focused on teaching them key water safety skills, your family will be focused on the fun. It’s what we call the Science of SwimPlay®.

Real Estate

A Huge Opportunity for Homes With Warts By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker

I

n my over 30-year real estate career I have never seen such a great opportunity to cash in a home with a wart. If you have one you should really consider selling now.

We should begin by defining what a home with a wart is. In a home, a wart is an attribute that a portion of the market would find unappealing and hurt the home’s marketability. Having a wart could be as simple as that your home has poor lighting, a dysfunctional kitchen layout or design, insufficient storage, small bedrooms, not enough baths, or poor curb appeal. These are just a few minor examples of warts where you have little control. Some warts where you do have control are the plaster on your pool is damaged and the water is no longer in it. You have mismatched or unsightly floors or you need a new roof or HVAC system. Some of the bigger wart examples are your house faces, backs, or sides a busy street; your house is near an airport with planes taking off and landing right over your backyard; or your home is close to major power lines. In a typical market any or all these impairments will result in a lower selling price. Occasionally, way less. The reason is because, when buyers have hundreds of other homes to choose from, they can become very picky. Sometimes to a fault. During times of high inventory buyers may look for reasons to exclude your home. HOW MUCH OF A PENALTY? In the extremes, my experience is that backing or siding to a busy street can be as much as a 25% discount. Buyers feel that a new roof can cost $40,000 to $50,000 in Scottsdale North so they might value the home $100,000 lower for the inconvenience. Power lines can be a 10% to 20% hit depending on their size and proximity. If your house suffers these challenges, and the investment is important to you, you really should consider selling now. The incredible market we are in now creates a once-ina-lifetime opportunity. A market with a demand that is five to ten times higher than the supply changes the normal dynamics. Impairments suddenly matter less and, in many circumstances, don’t matter at all. Buyers are looking for reasons to include your home. For the seller with a wart, that is your current opportunity. There have never been fewer homes available for sale in Scottsdale North ever. Am I saying that you shouldn’t do what you can to make myhyperlocalnews.com

your home more sellable? It depends. I always say that I will spend a dollar to make two dollars every day of the week. So, if there are things you can do to make people want it even more you should probably do those things. But if you don’t, the penalty will be much lower than normal. Obviously locational warts can’t be fixed. If the road wasn’t as busy when you bought the home, or the airport redirected the flight path after you moved in, that is tough. But right now, you have been given the chance to right that wrong. SO THAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY In this extraordinary minute in the market you can minimize or eliminate that wrong. You may sell quickly, limit showings, negotiate several offers, close swiftly, get your money, and stay in the house for 60, 90, 180 days or more if you need time to move. Just make sure you choose an experienced agent who understands what is important in your market. And make sure that they understand how to create a lot of offers and

deal with them when they come. Even a good product can go wrong in the hands of inexperienced people. When will this market and this window of opportunity for distressed sellers close? We have no idea. For months, people have been forecasting the end, but there are still too many buyers for too few homes. But with interest rates suddenly rising we are seeing significant changes in the market. Don’t be left saying, “I wish we would have…” If your home has one of the big unfixable warts this really is an extraordinary opportunity. E Squared Marketing Provides Quality Digital Marketing Services While Empowering Working Moms

W

e’re in the middle of the “Great Resignation.” Multiple sources cite than between 40-50% of the American workforce—many of them working moms—are looking for better pay, a flexible schedule, and the ability to work from home when possible. One local business owner and entrepreneur who sought out those same things years before it was part of the cultural norm is Ashley Richards, owner and founder of E Squared Marketing, a boutique digital marketing agency. Not only did Ashley trailblaze and find a better work/life harmony for herself, but she has also spent the last few years empowering other women to do the same. BREAKING THE MOLD AND INSPIRING OTHERS “One of corporate America’s largest challenges that is also contributing to the Great Resignation is the lack of flexibility and accommodations for working mothers,” Ashley shares. “When I had my daughter seven years ago, I was faced with a difficult choice: Do I want to stay home with my daughter or go back into the office for my 8-5 job? It was frustrating, as my job was fully able to be remote [she worked in marketing] and flexibility for hours or shifts was not an option. It was those traditional office hours or I was not a good fit for the position anymore—so I resigned and started my own company.” The path to founding her own agency started simply enough as Ashley began working as a freelance marketing consultant in 2015 after the birth of her daughter, Ellie. Her son, Eli, followed a year and a half later. “I felt like I had to make a choice between being a stay-at-home-mom or a working mom,” she says. “I felt strongly that I could do both.” So, she did. As her consulting business took off, she brought in more help by hiring her friends that had marketing experience. These friends were stay-at-home-moms with incredible work ethics and equally impressive careers, which they had put on hold to raise their children. That’s when she knew that she was on to something. “Here is this pot of gold, this untapped resource. These smart moms who need flexibility but want to continue to thrive in their careers,” she says. “Businesses are leaving incredible talent on the table by not offering accommodations for families,” she continues. “… Since leaving my corporate job, I have hired over 30 working moms and have given all of them the ability to work remote. They are happy, providing incredible content and executed marketing strategies for our clients while still being able to prioritize their families.” As business continued to roll in, Ashley provided quality work and 100% remote opportunities to working moms and E Squared Marketing—named in honor of her two children—was born. At E Squared Marketing, Ashley and her team of 27 remote employees provide creative digital solutions and heightened value to small and mediumsized businesses. The boutique digital marketing agency offers a variety of needed services, including social media content creation and management, digital newsletter campaigns, influencer marketing, online ad management, branding, graphic design, website design, and more. They

have worked with a variety of brands in a multitude of industries, including well-known names like Scottsdale Fashion Square, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, Cullum Homes, Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children, and many others. Her employees are not only fully remote, but she offers them the ability to work full or part time as well. “We try to be as flexible as possible and, by employing moms, we give them the confidence they need to know that they can do both—they can have fulfilling careers and provide for their families without sacrificing many of the important aspects that are a part of family life,” she says. Founding E Squared Marketing isn’t Ashley’s first time going off the beaten path to success. Fifteen years ago, she was working in commercial real estate helping to market and lease spaces across the nation. When the recession hit in 2009, she lost her job. Quick to pivot and find her next move, she accepted a position at the University of Phoenix so she could attend college tuition-free. Growing up with an alcoholic father and then losing her mom to cancer at age 13, she didn’t have a support system or safety net. “I worked full time and put myself through school,” she explains. She was able to graduate with her business marketing degree with zero debt.

“

QUALITY WORK WITH A PERSONAL MISSION At E Squared Marketing, Ashley and her team do their best to find that ideal harmony between the personal and the professional. While everyone works remote, they meet for regular Zoom meetings and quarterly in-person team meetings to help stay connected and engaged. “My mission it to help as many businesses as possible with their digital marketing needs while providing a business platform allowing working mothers the flexibility and professional opportunities they deserve,” Ashley says. Now that her children are getting older, Ashley shares that she hopes her success shows them that moms can work hard to follow their dreams—so they can too.

My mission is to help as many businesses as possible with their digital marketing needs while providing a business platform allowing working mothers the flexibility and professional opportunities they deserve.

”

Now, several years and a successful business later, Ashley has created her own support system to help her blend both her work and personal life successfully. “I don’t view success as a work/life balance, I view it more as a harmony,” she explains. “Having a supportive spouse is huge—my husband Brandon is my number one fan and rolls up his sleeves parenting just as much as I do. It takes support from family and friends. It truly takes a village.”

When it comes to current and prospective clients, she notes that just because her team’s work style isn’t necessarily traditional doesn’t mean that their results are anything short of amazing. If anything, the work they provide clients is exceptional because they know how to think outside of the box. “We [E Squared Marketing] offer a very customized approach to digital marketing strategy,” she explains. “We bring our clients’ customers an unforgettable online experience to grow their following, keep their business top of mind, and distinguish them from their competitors. We help our clients to humanize their brand; we are content strategists that keep the online conversations going about our clients.” Looking toward the future, the Scottsdale North resident plans to continue to grow E Squared Marketing—providing opportunities and inspiration for her clients and fellow working moms. “There is a need for quality digital marketing services and a space for working moms to help fill that need,” Ashley says. “My goal—and honor—is to continue to merge those two together into a successful business.” To learn more about E Squared Marketing, visit esquaredmarketing.com, call 623-205-3430 or email ashley@esquaredmarketing.com. Congratulations to the Class of 2022! By Cort Monroe, Ed.D., CCUSD Superintendent Congratulations to the Class of 2022 on their graduation! This current senior class is unique and I commend each one of them for their grit, resiliency and perseverance the last four years at Cactus Shadows High School. With their four-year experience almost in the rearview mirror, graduates can now reflect on the challenges they experienced while in high school. Many times, challenges, when seen through a long-term lens, present valuable opportunities for good, and these challenges will hopefully help our graduates be better people going out into the world and pursuing their passions. They are doing so with the support of their parents, family members, friends, teachers, coaches, and others around them. I would like to make note and congratulate the Class of 2022 on the following accomplishments: • The Class of 2022 consists of

On the Road Again! Are you Ready for Vacation? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

M

any of us are finally getting an opportunity to travel again, and we are more than ready! However, are you truly ready for that trip? One item you may have forgotten is to check on whether your estate plan is in order before you hit the road. Here are some thoughts on preparing your estate plan before your trip. • Get a Will, Trust and Power of Attorney in place. Have you ever gotten on a plane and thought, “I should have done my Will! What if something happens?” My clients feel great peace of mind after completing their plan. Your vacation can serve as the impetus to put a plan in place. • Update your existing estate plan. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to update our estate plan from time to time because change is inevitable. Are your children older now? Are your listed trustees and executors still a good choice? Check your plan to assure that you and your loved ones will be protected. • Name guardians for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents appointing guardians, especially if you are traveling without them. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so if needed.

• Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family). • Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file a probate court proceeding. It’s also a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans. • Organize your accounts and documents. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found. Then make a list of all your assets and where they can be found, including usernames and passwords. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe, secure place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files. Last, but not least: have a great time! You are likely going to come back safe and sound, but there is great peace of mind when your plan is in place before you take a trip. Seven Costly Mistakes That Can Affect Your Retirement P

ursuing your retirement dreams is challenging enough without making some common, and very avoidable, mistakes. Here are seven costly mistakes to steer clear of, if possible. 1.

No Strategy: Yes, the biggest mistake is having no strategy at all. Without a strategy, you have no goals, leaving you no way of knowing how you’ll get there— and if you’ve even arrived. Creating a solid strategy may increase your potential for success, before, during and after retirement.

2.

Not Maximizing Tax-Deferred Savings: Workers have tax-advantaged ways to save for retirement. Not participating in your employer’s 401(k) may be a mistake, especially when you’re passing up free money in the form of employer-matching contributions.

3.

Prioritizing College Funding over Retirement: Your kids’ college education is important, but you may not want to sacrifice your retirement for it. Remember, you can get loans and grants for college, but you can’t for your retirement.

4. Overlooking Healthcare Costs: Extended care may be an expense that can undermine your financial strategy for retirement…if you don’t prepare for it.

W

hile complete numbers weren’t available as of press time, preliminary estimates indicate that Arizona Gives Day 2022 is on pace for another highly successful 24-hour fundraising campaign. During this year’s 24-hour online fundraiser, which took place April 5-6, 27,741 individuals donated $4.22 million to 955 Arizona nonprofits through the Arizona Gives website (AZGives.org). Also, 868 volunteers pledged 36,269 hours to help their favorite nonprofits impact their communities. It is estimated that, once tallied, the official number will be over $5 million. “We are constantly overwhelmed by the deep generosity of Arizonans throughout the state in both financial terms and through their selfless willingness to volunteer their time for nonprofit programs, services and outreach,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. The Alliance manages Arizona Gives Day in collaboration with Arizona Grantmakers Forum. FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good,”

myhyperlocalnews.com

is the presenting sponsor. “We are deeply grateful that donors in Arizona recognized the call to action to assist all the very deserving nonprofits in very uncertain times and considering the additional challenges that people face from rising inflation and higher costs for everything. We know our Arizona nonprofits are also experiencing rising costs to provide key services to fellow Arizonans.”

5.

Not Adjusting Your Investment Approach Well Before Retirement: The last thing your retirement portfolio can afford is a sharp fall in stock prices and a sustained bear market at the moment you’re ready to stop working. Consider adjusting your asset allocation in advance of tapping into your savings so you’re not selling stocks when prices are depressed.

6.

Retiring with Too Much Debt: If too much debt is bad when you’re making money, it can be catastrophic when you’re living in retirement. Consider managing or reducing your debt level before you retire.

7.

It’s Not Only About Money: Above all, a rewarding retirement requires good health, so maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, stay socially involved, and remain intellectually active.

To help prevent making these mistakes, NOW is the time to adjust your budget and re-evaluate your goals to allow for retirement savings, just as you would for a new home or your dream vacation. This might make your retirement look a little different now, but with the right support – and strategies – you’ll be able to live the retirement you’ve always dreamed of. Consider talking with a financial professional from Diamond Retirement Strategies about your goals and most importantly to start the planning process to help ensure you are on the right path to retirement.

Since the first Arizona Gives Day in 2013, more than $34 million (and counting) has been raised for Arizona nonprofits. “Each year Arizona Gives Day brings this community together to support hundreds of deserving causes, and once again it delivered,” says Joel Johnson, FirstBank East Valley market president. “All of the nonprofits that received donations will be able to continue their respective missions thanks to everyone that donated. But an organization’s job isn’t done in one day, neither is ours. Let’s continue to bolster local nonprofits, whether that be financially or with time, and we’ll ensure Arizona remains an amazing place to live.”

We’ve built our reputation by putting clients’ needs first every time.

One of the most dynamic examples includes the use of PEMF Pulse Therapy and low-level electromagnetic pulses to soothe damaged joints, reduce inflammation,

Health Cellutions also provides the perfect opportunity to work on improving your physical strength and fitness. Those looking for fresh and intriguing ways to work up a sweat will be amazed by the assortment of dynamic and effective machines they have to offer. Timely Health Updates From Local Experts

M

ay is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month and Stroke Awareness Month. We checked in with local health experts to find out more about these two important health issues. NATIONAL SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of Justin Moser, M.D. Did you know that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined? You might think it’s unlikely to affect you until you’re older, but one specific type of skin cancer – melanoma – is one of the most common cancers you’ll find even among young adults. Melanoma also accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths due to its aggressive nature. Especially in the hot and sunny climate we enjoy here in Arizona, skin cancer and melanoma deserve our attention. The best thing you can do for your skin is wear a good SPF sunscreen (30 or greater) that protects your skin against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). Put it on every couple of hours that you’re outside – even if it’s cloudy. With proper care and monitoring, you can prevent skin cancer or catch it early, which lessens the chance you’ll be dealing with an advanced stage of cancer. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your skin for anything suspicious, and why getting regular skin checks from a dermatologist is so critical. It’s recommended that you begin annual skin screenings in your 20s or 30s, but if you’re in the sun a lot or have a family history of skin cancer, you should talk to your doctor about being screened sooner. The good news is that proper screenings catch skin cancers earlier. The earlier skin cancers are treated, the higher the chance of a cure. Even with melanoma, if it’s detected early, the five-year survival rate is 99%. Justin Moser, M.D., is with HonorHealth Research and Innovation Institute Melanoma Clinic.

STROKES NEED FAST RESPONSE: MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Abrazo Central Campus Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Lisa Ziomek, Stroke Care Coordinator at Abrazo Central Campus. More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital that can provide the right treatment in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: • Face – Ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? • Arms – Can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? • Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange? • Time – If you see any of these signs, call 911 right away.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

ON NETFLIX

“Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” A man recalls his childhood in 1969, which seems to be more fantastical than others. Richard Linklater uses his rotoscope animation style again, appropriate as it gives the film a feeling of a memory or a polaroid come to life. That’s the best way to sum up this movie— one long memory recount of a childhood that seems too insane to be true. It’s sort of an aimless movie, with its big selling point merely taking up less than a quarter of the film and its focus could be seen as boring or stretched out into a feature length. But there’s still enough charm from the actors to bring out the sincerity in it and of memories of a nostalgic time. And when it gets into the fantastical, it still fits and is entertaining. A nice, short ride.

IN THEATERS “Ambulance” Two brothers find themselves being chased across Los Angeles after stealing an ambulance with two hostages. A film

full of pure adrenaline, “Ambulance” is Michael Bay’s strongest work in a decade. This is an empathetic piece, one that explores what happens to people forced by desperation into a terrible situation, eloquently shown in performances by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzláez. Even so, the film doesn’t forget to be the thrill ride it promised, where Bay’s kinetic and fast editing is complemented by a more unhinged performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s two hours of continuous chaos, with some of the most impressive action of Bay’s career where we feel the isolation of the ambulance while also getting the impression that the entire city is after these two. In an age where action films underdeliver on their most important aspects, this film is a real triumph.

In a movie where every character must play different versions of themselves, each actor delivers on the promise, particularly Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, who go back and forth between hilarious and heartbreaking in their performances. This is a movie where you can watch fantastic fight sequences with impeccable choreography followed by some immature humor that brings the laughs, followed by one of the most crushing sequences in a film this year that happens to be between two rocks. And somehow, it all comes together and makes for what may be the best picture of the year. It’s not often we see something like this, and everyone should experience it.

biggest sin though is that, despite its claim as a horror film, there’s no tense nature to be found and it can’t even hide behind the “slow-burn” handle. Goran Stolevski’s directing is impressive and he shows some genuine promise for future films, but as a writer, it is what causes the whole film to collapse.

MAY RELEASES MAY 6 • “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” MAY 13 • “Firestarter” (In theaters and Peacock) • “Pleasure” (Limited) MAY 20 • “Downton Abbey: A New Era” • “Men” (Limited) • “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” (Disney+) MAY 27 • “Top Gun: Maverick” • “The Bob’s Burgers Movie”

“Everything Everywhere All At Once” A woman discovers that a multiverse with several versions of her exists and she is its last hope at survival. It’s rare to see a movie that pushes every limit that film can have, and yet, here it is. This film is a symphony of colors, chaos, and love for people who are broken and keep going.

“You Won’t Be Alone” A witch travels between various bodies to see the human experience. Sometimes, you come across a film that you want to admire but can’t. “You Won’t Be Alone” starts out well, with one of the most quietly nerve-wracking scenes of the year. But after that, we experience a very dull film; one that comes off as aimless. For a film that’s all about the experience of being human, none of the bodies our lead inhabits deliver a threedimensional feeling and even the usually great Noomi Rapace seems bored.
