CITY HELP FOR SCOTTSDALE BUSINESSES THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS DOING ITS BEST TO HELP LOCAL BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. We’ve rounded up some recent initiatives that help Scottsdale businesses and the customers that they serve.

SUPPORT SCOTTSDALE SITE OFFERS BUSINESS, RESIDENT RESOURCES The city of Scottsdale’s Tourism & Events and Economic Development departments, Experience Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered on a resource microsite to help businesses, employees, and residents navigate the COVID-19 outbreak.

If you are a business owner or employee, make SupportScottsdale.com your first stop to access city, statewide and national programs to keep your doors open and Scottsdale’s workforce strong.

The city is also collecting Instagram handles of businesses actively promoting offers or online shopping, as well as restaurants offering take-out, curbside or delivery, for the Shop Local and Meals To-Go pages of the site. If your business or restaurant fits these prerequisites, help support this initiative by using #supportscottsdale in your social media efforts.

SCOTTSDALE GOOD TO GO BUSINESS FINDER Scottsdale’s new interactive map puts local business information right at locals’ fingertips. The Scottsdale Good To Go Business Finder is a tool that allows users to locate open businesses. This new tool serves as a liaison between consumers and companies in terms of communicating their availability. Users can use their location to scroll through the map to see what restaurants, retail shops or hotels are open around them.

"This is a great tool for both the business community and our residents to utilize now during the COVID-19 crisis when so much information is changing daily," says Cristal Rodriguez Economic Development Marketing Manager.

The Scottsdale Good To Go Business Finder was created by the City of Scottsdale’s Geographic Information Systems department. To use the tool or have your local business added to the map, visit choosescottsdale.com/media/ covid19/good-to-go.

SCOTTSDALE SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE CENTER OFFERS GUIDANCE Scottsdale’s Economic Development Department has launched a new initiative aimed at assisting Scotts-

dale small businesses. The Scottsdale Small Business Assistance Center (SSBAC) will serve as the city of Scottsdale’s virtual one-stop shop for Scottsdale businesses looking for information on available business support programs and resources during the COVID-19 crisis.

The SSBAC looks to assist Scottsdale businesses with questions regarding federal, and other government funding programs and connect them with critical resources. Businesses can rely on the center to provide the most up to date information on assistance programs, step-by-step guides, and useful webinars. Upon contacting the virtual center, individuals will receive an email from the SSBAC team with valuable re-

sources and a commitment that a team member will follow up directly within one business day.

"Our Scottsdale businesses are working tirelessly navigating complex programs while at the same time trying to run their businesses and take care of their employees. The SSBAC is designed as a resource to get information and we look forward to helping our small businesses," says Rob Millar, Economic Development Director.

HONORHEALTH PROVIDES MEALS TO SCOTTSDALE ELDERLY THROUGH MOBILE MEAL PROGRAM COMMITTED TO THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THE COMMUNITIES, THE FOOD SERVICES TEAM AT HONORHEALTH SCOTTSDALE THOMPSON PEAK MEDICAL CENTER HAS PARTNERED WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO HELP PROVIDE HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS MEALS TO HOMEBOUND ELDERLY NEIGHBORS. The initiative, called the Mobile

Meal Program, began back in 2015, as an attempt to develop interventions and improve nourishment for neighboring senior citizens. Studies show that providing a balanced intake of proper nutrition can support aging immune systems better, and can lead to quicker recovery times for those discharged from the hospitals, as well as reduce hospital admission rates.

“As a registered dietitian, the objective of our meal service program is to work with our chef, Christine Leo, on an approved monthly menu for nutritional adequacy to ensure that seniors are receiving fresh, hot and nutritious meals,” says Melissa Schmidt, network director, clinical nutrition and food services at HonorHealth. “This not only makes eating convenient for people, but can help improve nutrition outcomes as well.”

Many factors can account for inadequate nutrition and the impact plays out in many ways. Seniors who 4 • May 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

are undernourished or don’t eat enough can impact their daily health, and in cases where people are healing after a hospitalization, nourishment helps them heal faster.

The HonorHealth team preps and packages an average of 700 meals a week, which arrive hot for immediate consumption, or refrigerated for later. Community volunteers deliver the meals, making sure that residents have a hot and well-balanced meal each day. Since March, the program has cranked out an additional 100 meals a week and increased services to three area senior centers in the Scottsdale area due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We love that we’re able to provide this service to our community,” Schmidt says. “It’s so rewarding to know that some of our homebound Scottsdale neighbors are able to receive a nutritious meal from us nearly every day.” scottsdalenorthnews.com

HELPING OUR NEIGHBORS

AS COVID-19 CONTINUES TO WREAK HAVOC AROUND THE WORLD, IT’S ESPECIALLY HARD TO BE HOPEFUL. But a local family has found a positive way to deal with this crisis.

Nellie Klooster, her husband and their toddler son have created a neighborhood “pantry” in their front yard, and the response has been very successful.

Klooster says that many neighbors have donated items in a short period of time, and it has built up so much that they went from one small shelving unit to two shelving units, bins, boxes, and a small table. Some donated items include: health care and baby products, kids’ entertainment, snacks, treats, fresh eggs, herbs, citrus, canned goods, juices, boxed goods like pasta, rice, grains and cereals, dried and canned beans and legumes, books, stuffed animals, housekeeping products, cat and dog food, cat litter, batteries, and water.

Klooster says, “We want to help our neighbors, especially those who don’t have access to food or don’t qualify for food banks, so that they don’t have to go into the stores.”

The neighborhood pantry started the day after her husband’s job was furloughed, and like numerous other Americans in a similar situation, they were concerned about how they were going to provide for their family. Due to her son’s asthma and a newborn baby at home, they can’t shop as freely as they once could. However, she realized that they have what they need, while others may not.

In order to share with others, Klooster immediately set up one shelving unit in their front yard and stocked it with extra items she and her son found in their house, like canned goods and paper products, and the pantry was born. Neighbors donate items daily and can converse with each other via Nextdoor. com.

The main supporter of Klooster’s pantry is her 3-year-old son, who does most of the work, along with his dad. “On the first day, he went into his room and picked out a few items he wanted to give,” Klooster says of her son. “Every morning at 8 a.m., he helps put out the pantry, and every night at 7 p.m., he helps put all of the items back in the garage.”

Klooster added that her son also helped her make signs: “Neighborhood Pantry”; “Take what you need, Leave what you can” and “Have a Blessed Day” so that people can quickly identify the items.

working on making an appreciation box for nearby firefighters. She’d like to donate snacks, quick meals, and drinks, and have the neighbors write thank you notes. And when the crisis passes, Klooster wants to work with schools and churches in the area to create a free pantry and library.

Klooster adds, “We want to send the message to everyone that when you are able to share and give, to do so.”

Other ways you can help and share in your neighborhood include: shopping and running errands for seniors and the disabled; making masks; and donating to other neighborhood pantries throughout the area. Some other fun ideas include: teddy bear sightings in front windows, painted rocks in yards, and chalk sidewalk drawings to view while out walking for exercise while practicing social distancing.

RESOURCES FOR ABUSE VICTIMS DURING COVID-19 Compiled by Michelle Talsma Everson WHILE MANY ARE STAYING WITHIN THEIR HOMES AND SHELTERING IN PLACE DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, FOR SOME, HOME IS THE LAST PLACE THEY WANT TO BE. “Abuse is about power and control. When survivors are forced to stay in the home or in close proximity to their abuser more frequently, an abuser can use any tool to exert control over their victim, including a national health concern such as COVID-19,” according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

“In a time where companies may be encouraging that their employees work remotely, and the CDC is encouraging social distancing, an abuser may take advantage of an already stressful situation to gain more control.”

And, it’s not just adult victims who suffer. “The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is headquartered here in

Arizona, but it’s the child abuse hotline for all of the U.S. and Canada,” shares Savannah Harrelson, a spokesperson for the hotline. “We saw a 31 percent increase in contacts to the hotline this March compared to March 2019, which is a result of the pandemic.

We’ve received numerous calls about parental anxiety, concerns about staying at home with an abuser, and resource inquiries—all related to COVID-19.”

A

s the number of COVID-19 cases continue to mount, many Arizonans may be considering where to go for care if they develop potential symptoms. One important – yet potentially overlooked – resource is telehealth, which may enable people to connect 24/7 with a health care provider via a digital device and avoid potential exposure risks associated with in-person trips to health care facilities.

Telehealth may be especially helpful as an initial option for medical advice related to COVID-19 and to help evaluate other possible health issues, as well as to assist the 20% of the U.S. population that lives in rural areas. To help people more effectively take advantage of this technology during the evolving COVID-19 situation, here are three tips to consider: IDENTIFY AVAILABLE RESOURCES To find telehealth resources, check with your care provider group, health benefit plan or employer.

Nearly nine out of 10 employers offer telehealth visits to their employees, as do many Medicare and Medicaid health plans (in some cases by telephone), and 76% of hospitals connect patients and care providers using video or other technology. In some cases, people can access telehealth visits without cost sharing. Since the outbreak emerged, some health plans are now encouraging patients to use telephone or live videoconferencing (if available) to connect people with local network medical providers, waiving all cost sharing for COVID-19 related visits. This is especially important for people with certain complex conditions, such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, as it may enable them to “see” their own physician for acute or follow-up care related to their condition and help avoid potential exposure to the coronavirus during an in-person visit.

UNDERSTAND LIKELY NEXT STEPS During a telehealth visit, care providers can give general medical advice to evaluate possible COVID-19 symptoms (fever, dry cough or difficulty breathing). While diagnostic testing services are not available through a telehealth visit to help confirm a diagnosis for COVID-19 (if needed), care providers can help guide patients to a local care provider or public health authority for testing and follow-up care. Making these connections may help people take the appropriate steps in advance of an in-person test, which may help reduce the risk of your exposure and possible exposure to other patients and health care providers. For other illnesses (not COVID-19 related) that are treatable with medications, telehealth care providers can write prescriptions and discuss how to obtain them safely, such as using medication home delivery or drive-thru pickup at a local pharmacy. Due to the COVID-19 situation, it is important to note that people may anticipate potential wait times, as some care providers offering telehealth may be currently experiencing a surge in appointments.

ACCESS OTHER HEALTH SERVICES: While elective health care procedures may be delayed to help enable care providers to focus on COVID-19 cases, telehealth may help people more effectively manage other health issues without the need to go out and risk potential exposure to the virus. Telehealth can help address myriad medical issues, including allergies, pinkeye, fevers, rashes and the regular flu.

In addition, so much time at home can also contribute to behavioral health issues, so people should consider telehealth as a resource to connect with a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist. Importantly, people who experience a significant or serious medical issue should go to the emergency room.

By considering these tips, people in Arizona may be able to more effectively use telehealth resources to help stay safe during these challenging times.

S

lip and fall accidents account for over one million emergency room visits each year, but did you know that, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an older adult dies from a fall every 20 minutes?

While slip and fall accidents are a leading cause of hospitalizations for all age groups, they can be particularly dangerous for those over age 65. Thirty-three percent of people 65 or older experience a fall each year. Tragically, these slip and fall accidents resulted in 15,000 deaths in 2015 and have increased every year since.

One of the most common slip and fall injuries older adults suffer is a hip fracture. Recovering from a hip fracture is painful and difficult at any age but can result in more serious complications as we age. Even those who do recover can experience reduced mobility, an increased fear of falling again, and a loss of independence, which can lead to depression.

The good news is that there are many steps you can take to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of slip and fall accidents for you and your loved ones.

If you are over 65, the CDC recommends four things you can do to prevent falls: TALK TO YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER ABOUT FALL RISKS AND PREVENTION Tell your provider if you have fallen or worry about falling and have them review your medicines, even over-thecounter medicines. As you get older, the

way medicines work in your body can change. Some medicines, or combinations of medicines, can make you sleepy or dizzy and cause you to fall.

EXERCISE TO IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE AND STRENGTH Exercises that improve balance and make your legs stronger lower your chances of falling. Conversely, lack of exercising leads to weakness and increases your chance of falling. Be sure to check with your doctor or healthcare provider before starting any new exercise program.

HAVE YOUR EYES AND FEET CHECKED Once a year, check with your eye doctor and be sure to update your prescription if needed. You may have a condition like glaucoma or cataracts that limits your vision. Also, have your healthcare provider check your feet once a year and discuss proper footwear.

MAKE YOUR HOME SAFER Making your home safer is something you can do right away. The National Safety Council recommends these tips: remove clutter, small furniture, pet gear, electrical cords, throw rugs and anything else that might cause someone to trip. Arrange furniture so there is plenty of room for walking. Add grab bars inside and outside of your bathtub or shower and next to the toilet. Put railings on both sides of the stairs and make sure stairs and hallways have good lighting. Make sure outdoor areas are well lit and walkways are smooth and free of puddles. Finally, older people should feel comfortable using a cane or walker if needed.

Taking these precautions today can protect you and your loved ones in the future.

MARKET VOLATILITY

T

he exhilarating anticipation of ticking up the roller coaster is quickly followed by the screams of the downward spiral to its eventual stop. We know the ride, yet we will stay the course because we know the ride will end – not just because we are locked in our seats for the duration. Understanding the outcome helps us tolerate the ride, and even enjoy most of it. But if you add uncertainty, the ride has a different feeling. No matter how often you tell yourself the ride will end, the uncertainty creates emotions.

As an investor you may read about the ups and downs of the stock market and it may feel like a roller coaster. History shows us that previous market corrections have ended. Yet even armed with the data, your emotions seem to contradict your good judgement.

This internal conflict may cause you to flip day to day from staying the course and ignoring uncertainty or selling off to reduce the risk. If we look at historical charts of the markets, we can project ahead to presume the outcome of the current correction. These rational thoughts of historical data somehow still may not communicate calm to the heart and stomach. Big market moves may seem less tolerable and there is no locking bar to keep us in place. The choice is ever constant - stay the course or stop the uneasiness. Will data or emotions rule your decision?

This is volatility. Volatility is a statistical measure of 10 • May 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

standard deviation or dispersion of returns. What it means to you is the experience of the daily fluctuations of your holdings or your account balance. It creates emotions as we see what has happened and we project the uncertainty in our thoughts of what is yet to come. Did you know that the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) created a volatility index (VIX), which is a measurement of the markets expected future volatility? Does your financial advisor discuss volatility with you and prepare you for market corrections?

To you, market volatility may be very strong emotions of the threat of losing something important to you.

Money helps provide a lifestyle and sense of security, which is important to most of us. When you feel threatened by the risk of reduced purchasing power or the ability to protect those people or things important to you, the feeling is real.

In the world of investments, volatility may challenge one’s ability to accept risk or tolerate the volatility. It is important to understand one’s own risk tolerance to identify how much to accept or how much risk to avoid. A common practice before developing an investment portfolio is to quantify your risk by completing a risk questionnaire or risk quiz to determine your personal risk tolerance. Your personal risk tolerance is the amount of volatility you are willing to accept.

Market volatility as we have recently experienced may cause you to rethink what you are truly willing to accept in relation to risk. A word of caution – risk tolerance should not be tied to short-term experiences or emotions. Risk tolerance is a representation of your willingness to accept risk, or volatility. During periods

of volatility, some are inclined to second-guess their risk tolerance. Financial experts encourage investors to make long-term decisions not market cycle decisions. If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act.

Time in the market has historically offered greater success than timing the markets.

What you may not know is that risk is something you can control. How? By aligning your values, goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon to develop a riskmitigated portfolio that is reflective of these in order to reduce your exposure to volatility.

Diversification – not having all your eggs in one basket - can help mitigate risk. What is diversification though? Is diversification having accounts at different institutions? Or is it having several managers? Or is diversification having different asset classes for asset allocation?

At the highest-level, diversification begins with a mix of stocks and bonds. A moderate investor, let’s call them Ed and Joan, may decide that a 50/50 allocation suits their risk tolerance, provides adequate return to maintain their lifestyle, and helps them stay aligned to their values (family, security, health, spirituality, and autonomy). In theory, having one stock and one bond would meet the 50/50 allocation. But common sense says that’s not enough “eggs.” To diversify the bonds, Ed and Joan may purchase Treasuries, Corporates, Municipals, or Emerging Market debt, to name a few.

hirty days ago, I wrote my article for the April edition of this paper on the topic of how to evaluate multiple offers on your Scottsdale North home. I wrote it because, at the time, we were in the best real estate market I had seen in my 30+ year real estate career, and multiple offers were reasonably common. I thought it would be helpful for you to have some tips on best practices. As of this writing just 30 days later - not only are we no longer seeing multiple offers on homes, sellers are lucky to get multiple people to tour their homes! Incredible.

Above is the “Cromford Supply v Demand Index” for Valley real estate. This snapshot was taken roughly two weeks after Governor Ducey issued a statewide Stay At Home order through the end of April. At the time of this writing,

demand is slightly below normal and supply significantly below normal, but the lines are moving toward each other.

The lines at this point are still pretty far apart, but if they continue to come together or actually cross, prices will be affected. What the supply and demand chart above will look like in the coming months is anyone’s guess. Many believe that the unprecedented national business shut down due to COVID-19 will drive our economy into a recession, or even a depression, later this year. If that is true, how long it will last, and how much that would affect the housing market, is open to debate. But I think we can all agree that our world is changing.

ELECTION YEAR, CORONAVIRUS, STOCK MARKET TURBULENCE… OH MY!

ust in case you have had your head in the sand for the last month (which may be the safest place, actually!), let’s review the trifecta of issues that are currently making 2020 a one-of-a-kind year.

Concerts, sporting events, weddings, vacations and business travel have all ground to a halt. Meanwhile, we all have recently experienced the major turn that the stock market has made.
