The Future Isn’t Looking Brighter for Fossil Fuel Diehards or Solar Stragglers. Go Solar Today. By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they

need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. The question is whether you’re prepared to thrive in the coming world of economic and geopolitical turbulence. If you’re ready to secure energy independence and security for your family, then contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

A Spotlight on Local

Connecting Scottsdale North Highlights Local Businesses and Nonprofits By Jenna-Lee Neff SCOTTSDALE NORTH IS KNOWN FOR ITS BEAUTIFUL VIEWS AND MAINTAINING A SMALL-TOWN FEEL AMID THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF LIFE IN THE VALLEY. That said, many area insiders know that it’s often under acknowledged. To change that, one local real estate professional is keeping the community connected and thriving through a special initiative called Connecting Scottsdale North. “Connecting Scottsdale North is a resource to create a sense of community and better connect the local residents to the area’s small businesses,” says creator and local real estate broker Scott Gaertner of The Scott Gaertner Group. He adds that the initiative also helps other Valley residents and out-of-state tourists understand more about the Scottsdale North community and what it offers. Connecting Scottsdale North (connectingscottsdalenorth.com) brings attention to local small businesses and organizations located in a stretch of Scottsdale that begins at Pinnacle Peak Road and extends roughly 15 miles north to the city border. The articles and video spotlights feature local businesses, nonprofits and other organizations that foster relationships and benefit the community. myhyperlocalnews.com

The initiative has already raised awareness for Foothills Caring Corps, JJ’s Deli, Why Hello! Modern Home, Health Cellutions, and more. Aside from individuals features, the website also includes a small business directory, providing names and contact information for shopping, dining and services located in The Summit, Terravita Market Place, Pinnacle At Scottsdale Shopping Center, Village At Pinnacle Peak, Scottsdale North Shopping Center Desert Village Shopping Center, and La Mirada Shopping Center. Gaertner, who has worked in North Scottsdale since 1989, says the area is commonly overlooked because of the large city size. This project allows businesses to get exposure in the local community, increase their reach, and develop a sense of belonging. “Once the business owners have a voice, they can use it to share what they do with community members,” Gaertner says. “In turn, a local resident who always goes to the same spots may try something new and patron the featured business.” Another effect of being in the “forgotten territory,” as Gaertner has previously described the area, is a lack of a cohesive area identity.

“Scottsdale is so incredibly long and narrow that it really needs distinctions, so people understand where things are,” he explains. “Old Town has become a good moniker for the southern section of Scottsdale. Now we need one for the northern.” Gaertner loves the Scottsdale North area and has been part of the development teams for the Desert Mountain, Terravita, and Winfield communities. He continues to work on increasing awareness of the area he sees as a hidden gem and encourages locals to reach out with their suggestions on how they would like to see Connecting Scottsdale North cultivate opportunities in the community. His next project is a local gift card program that will launch this spring and will be exclusive to the Scottsdale North area.

SONS OF KEMET, APRIL 15 From the mind of visionary saxophonist and bandleader Shabaka Hutchings comes Sons of Kemet, an eclectic project combining elements of otherworldly jazz, funk-infused rock, cerebral hip hop, Caribbean folk, and diverse African traditions. The London-based quartet features some of the most progressive 21stcentury talents in British jazz and beyond. Sons of Kemet is born of many vital elements, including a name that nods to ancient Egyptian culture and an unusual instrumentation combining tenor sax, tuba, and a pair of dynamic drummers.

with more than 40 recordings to his credit, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band style, and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm. Scofield is joined by a stellar band featuring Jon Cowherd (keyboardist with Brian Blade Fellowship and Cassandra Wilson, among others), Vicente Archer (string bass with Robert Glasper, Louis Hayes, and Scofield Combo 66, etc.), and drummer Josh Dion.

The record, which also features folkloric Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, was named “one of the best albums of 2021” by NPR’s Felix Contreras, reached number one on the Transglobal World Music Chart in December 2021, and received a four-star review in “DownBeat,” just to mention a few of its accolades. Each a charismatic and virtuosic performer, Sosa and Keita share a special musical chemistry that brings audiences to their feet. Each concert, a unique fusion of jazz and world music, is an uplifting experience, reflecting the close and compassionate listening of artists engaged in a captivating musical conversation. NEW BUSINESS ALERT: The Crock Pot Club Launches on April 22 “Easier than meal prep, better than takeout!” Photo Courtesy of The Crock Pot Club IF YOU’RE IN NEED OF A QUICK AND CONVENIENT DINNER OPTION THAT IS HEALTHY TOO, YOU’RE IN LUCK, AS THE CROCK POT CLUB LAUNCHES ON APRIL 22. Owned by local brother and sister duo Ian Hyslop and Shannon Brown, The Crock Pot Club steps up the convenience factor by providing fresh, fully prepared meals that are ready to make in a slow cooker. “Our motto is ‘just clip it, flip it, set it, and forget it,’” says Ian. “We want to take all of the hard work out of making healthy, delicious meals at home.” The Crock Pot Club offers a subscription for weekly delivery of their meals. All their meals use certified organic produce and grass-fed, pasture-raised meat. There is also a vegetarian option for those who don’t eat meat. Each week there is a different menu item with an option for veggie lovers. Customers can change their subscription type at any time. They offer a half pot meal for $27.99 per week, which serves four, and a full pot meal for $49.99, which serves eight. This is less than the cost of what it takes to feed a family of four at most

fast-food restaurants. Meals are delivered on Thursday mornings and customers can choose the time when they want them dropped off. The company does it this way so that their customers can throw their meals into their slow cooker before heading off to work. Ian shares that he has been in the food service business for 20 years in a wide variety of roles. He is a foodie at heart who loves experimenting in the kitchen and sharing his creations with his family. Shannon is a certified health coach with a degree in biochemistry from Northern Arizona University. She was an educator for 10 years and has a history of healing her own autoimmune conditions, so she loves bringing science into the kitchen and teaching others to heal with food. Ian and Shannon were inspired to start The Crock Pot Club for a variety of factors, including convenience for local families. Ian is a father to two teenage boys, ages 16 and 13, while Shannon is a new mom to a baby girl. “We know the challenge of finding the time and energy to make nourishing and tasty food for our families,” Shannon explains. “In addition, we saw how people

have enjoyed the convenience of getting food and groceries delivered to their door during the pandemic.” The brother and sister entrepreneurs share that The Crock Pot Club subscription is a also great option for senior citizens who don’t have the ability, space, or desire to cook for themselves. Making Your Money Last in Retirement Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA™, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®

H

aving spent decades saving for retirement, it can feel like a major shift for retirees to spend down their hard-earned assets. Research by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found people with $500,000 or more in savings at retirement spent down less than 12% of their assets over 20 years.1 Many of these retirees are reluctant to dip into their principal for fear of running out of money due to the anticipation of increased healthcare expenses and other factors. If you share these concerns about the longevity of your savings, know there are steps you can take to help you feel more confident. Here are some tips to help you get started: UNDERSTAND THE ARC OF RETIREMENT SPENDING. Annual expenses generally are highest within the first few years of retirement. This is because retirees are often taking advantage of their newfound leisure time to pursue hobbies, travel, dine out and shop. Spending tends to slow down with advancing age. You may find it reassuring to realize there’s a good chance your lifestyle expenses in retirement could level out or decrease over time. PLAN FOR HEALTHCARE COSTS. Healthcare is consuming an increasing proportion of many retirees’ income. You can start preparing for these expenses today by researching your insurance and savings options and developing a strategy to cover your needs. Your options could include a combination of the following: Medicare, Medigap supplemental insurance, health savings accounts (HSAs), long-term care policies, continuing health insurance through your current or former employer, and other dedicated healthcare savings. Having funds and protection in place can help you feel more prepared to handle a medical emergency or more routine care.

easily accessible investments to provide income in case of a market downturn or an unexcepted financial event in your life. At the same time, it’s important to also have investments that are positioned for growth, or at the minimum, keep up with inflation. Many retirees spend decades in retirement, so plan your investment strategy with longevity in mind. DEVISE A SUSTAINABLE WITHDRAWAL STRATEGY. A well-crafted retirement income plan can help you avoid running out of money and feel more confident about spending your hard-earned assets. Tally up your various sources of retirement income, which may include Social Security, annuities, retirement assets and other investment earnings. Then, decide which assets you will tap into first, and when you will claim Social Security benefits. Remember that at 72 years of age you are required to take required minimum distributions from your traditional IRA and employersponsored retirement plans, so work this income into your plan. CONSIDER THE TAX CONSEQUENCES. Reducing the tax bill on retirement income is a priority for a great number of retirees, yet many feel understanding the tax impacts of drawing down assets is complex. If you share these sentiments, starting the planning process early and seeking guidance from a tax and financial advisor can help you feel more secure in your strategy. – “The Employee Benefit Research Institute’s Spending in Retirement Survey”. EBRI, 2021.

Ortega. “I am pleased that Jackie Johnson will champion Scottsdale’s diversity programs and initiatives.” “I am very excited to join the city of Scottsdale,” Johnson says. “For more than 20 years I have served various communities by championing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The city has a great legacy of leaders who have served in this role. I look forward to building upon the foundation laid by my predecessors by engaging with employees and the community as we continue to ensure Scottsdale is a place for all.” Johnson holds a master’s degree in public administration and bachelor’s degree in social work from Arizona State University. Bayardi is active in many legal, community and educational organizations in Arizona, and has previously worked in the Office of the Arizona Attorney General, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, and the Arizona Office of Administrative Hearings. “We are pleased to extend this offer to Judge Bayardi, whose commitment to building the best possible justice system in Arizona has been well demonstrated over the course of her distinguished career,” Mayor Ortega says. “I am confident that Judge Bayardi’s expertise and experience will be an invaluable contribution to our community.” “I am honored to be selected and excited to join the Scottsdale City Court; it has a great reputation for being a court that is innovative and always seeking to leverage technology and other means to best serve the community. I am looking forward to working with the judges, staff, and stakeholders in expanding upon that reputation,” Bayardi says. City News Tía Carmen Debuts at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa

Renowned Chef Angelo Sosa to Open Contemporary Southwestern Restaurant JW MARRIOTT PHOENIX DESERT RIDGE RESORT & SPA IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEBUT OF TÍA CARMEN, A NEW DINING DESTINATION LED BY RENOWNED CHEF ANGELO SOSA ALONG WITH SEASONED CHEF RESTAURANT ANGELO OPERATOR MARK SOSA STONE SET TO OPEN EARLY THIS MONTH. Tía Carmen, named after Chef Sosa’s aunt, celebrates the local landscape, farmers, and community of the Southwest while reflecting a mix of tradition and modernity with bold, elemental cooking and a diverse beverage program. A protégé of Jean-George Vongerichten, Chef Sosa is known for his work alongside the most pedigreed restaurateurs, including Alain Ducasse, Stephen Starr, and Masaharu Morimoto. He is widely recognized for appearing on several television shows such as Bravo’s “Top Chef” for three seasons and HBO Max’s “Selena + Chef.” As the founding chef and partner in the Michelinrecommended Mexican hotspot, Añejo Restaurant in New York City, Chef Sosa is inspired by his Latin heritage

and the diverse techniques from his mentors throughout his career. “Throughout my life, my Tía Carmen instilled in me a passion and love for cooking, teaching me the impact and the power that food can have when made from a place of pure love,” says Chef Sosa. “The discovery of traveling through the Southwest gave me the opportunity to explore the region through the lens of ranchers, potters, farmers, and artisans. I have always had a deep fascination and appreciation for Southwestern food traditions. It has been an honor and privilege to be able to contribute to this beautiful and rich culinary narrative.” Open for dinner, the menu will feature flavors imbued from a wood-fired grill highlighting the beauty and ingredients of the region. The menu is divided into three sections: light + fresh, maize + harina, and charcoal + wood + fire. Chef Sosa’s signature dishes at Tiá Carmen include Tuna Crudo with chilled corn coconut broth accented with jicama and garnished with dill; Southwestern style tri-tip kebabs garnished with Thai Basil, cilantro, pickles, and serrano chilis; Lamb Ragu with mesquite noodles; and Tía Carmen’s Chicken Guisado, a stew made with succulent pieces of thigh meat and seasoned with a mélange of cumin, annatto, arbol, and oregano. Chef Sosa tapped long-time partner and restaurant operator Stone to help bring his vision for Tía Carmen to life, making this their first restaurant in Arizona.

They are collaborating with a variety of Arizona-based purveyors, including Hypha Foods, the lead producer of foraged mushrooms; Ramona Farms, where he sources the iconic Tepary beans; and Arizona Grass Raised Beef and Top Knot Farms for responsibly raised meats. Additionally, Phoenix-based Blue Door Ceramics designed an exclusive collection of plate ware in collaboration with Chef Sosa to showcase a bold, beautiful Southwestern tablescape. To complement the Tía Carmen menu, Mitchel O. Bushell (formerly of Gwen, Gran Blanco and Accomplice) created a cocktail program focusing on local herbs and spices alongside local producers of small and large batched spirits such as Arizona’s own spirits Whiskey Del Bac and a broad program of artisanal agave spirits. Eduardo Dingler (formerly of Morimoto Restaurant Group) specially curated the wine program, which leans heavily on representation from Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe as well as wines from the West Coast and emerging European producers. Designed in collaboration with Thomas Schoos of Los Angeles-based hospitality design firm Schoos Design, guests can expect an “Earth meets Art” theme when entering Tía Carmen. The 130-seat restaurant represents a clean, warm palette of sophisticated natural simplicity that was developed to harmonize with Chef Sosa’s inspiration—his Tía Carmen. ashion, celebrities, auctions and a star-studded runway will come together for an adventurous Day in Wonderland. On Sunday, April 24 at 10 a.m., Childhelp will host the 15th Annual Childhelp Wings Fashion Show at the distinguished JW Marriot Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort and Spa. Proceeds from the event will benefit Childhelp’s Arizona programs and services provided to abused and neglected children in Arizona through the Childhelp Children’s Advocacy Center of Arizona dedicated to Linda Pope (CCCAZ). This year’s luncheon will feature a live and silent auction, as well as fun themed giveaways and a heartwarming fashion show featuring local families and celebrities. Children, teens, and adults will strut the runway wearing the latest fashion trends courtesy of Saks Fifth Avenue in Biltmore Fashion Park and local retailer Cheeky Chic Baby and Kids Boutique. Event chairs Jennifer Archuleta and Jamie LeVine, in partnership with the “Founding Mother” of Childhelp Wings, Carol Hebets, bring their passion for philanthropy and love of fashion to create one of the Valley’s premier family-friendly events. This year’s theme is “A Day in Wonderland” in honor of childhood wonderment and whimsey.

“At Childhelp, it’s our mission to heal both the bodies and minds of children so that they can live a life filled with adventure and reach for their hopes and dreams,” Childhelp National Board Member and Wings Founding Member Carol Hebets say. “Thanks to supporters like our fabulous chairs, event committee and volunteers, we are able to make their dreams a reality by stopping cycles of abuse and preventing the next generation of children from being lost in the shadows.” During the event, Childhelp will honor three locals making a difference for Arizona children and families through their philanthropy and volunteerism. Carey Pauley will receive the 2022 Childhelp Helping Hand Award while Laurie and Bill Eckholm will be honored with the 2022 Childhelp Wings of an Angel Award. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Childhelp is the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit dedicated to helping abused, neglected and at-risk youth. In 2020, Childhelp served over 30,000 Arizona children and families through prevention, intervention, and treatment programs such as Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe and the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline. The Childhelp Arizona Wings Chapter is made up of volunteers who help educate youth about issues surrounding child abuse and neglect through service projects and fundraisers. Scottsdale Athlete Climbs Mount Everest As A Fundraiser for Charity Photos Courtesy of Clayton Wolfe

C

layton Wolfe isn’t your average 32-year-old. The Scottsdale resident is also a pilot, former farmer, Scottsdale 20/30 Club member, and mountaineer. He is currently in hot pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which is an adventurer’s challenge to reach the North Pole, the South Pole and

all the seven summits. Wolfe has found a way to connect his love of climbing to raising money to help those less fortunate. On April 18, he will begin his second attempt to summit Mt. Everest (last year, he got to 26,000 feet on his summit day when his teammate and Sherpa got sick and they had to turn back). He is inviting the community to get involved in his effort to tie his climb to a fundraising effort for the Scottsdale 20/30 Club. On his website, everest22.com, Wolfe is selling $100 Everest Golden Tokens (which will make the trek up to the Everest summit of 29,035 feet with him, then be mailed back to supporters) and raffle tickets for an all-inclusive trip to Everest Base Camp, with all proceeds benefiting the Scottsdale 20/30 Club (scottsdale2030.org) and the local children’s charities supported by the club, including Boys Hope Girls Hope and The Care Fund. This isn’t the first time Wolfe has climbed to raise funds for nonprofits. Before

returning to his hometown of Scottsdale in 2020, he owned a farm-to-table food brand called Northerly that featured a “Climb and Give Campaign,” donating one serving of oats grown on his farm per foot in total elevation he climbed to the Feeding America Network. By February 2020, he was able to climb three of the seven summits, which in total was 59,218 feet of elevation. This enabled him to donate 59,218 servings (11,103 pounds) of rolled oatmeal to St. Mary’s Food Bank. “Being a farmer made me who I am today,” says Wolfe. “However, it wasn’t easy to live in two countries, splitting my time between Canada and Scottsdale. Selling the farm simplified life, but it left me looking for a way to match my mountaineering to another philanthropic effort.” When Wolfe was introduced to the Scottsdale 20/30 Club, he says it was exactly what he was looking for. “This club is a way for me to be involved in supporting the community in a sustainable way—it provides me with accountability and a support system.”

“I’m a goal-oriented person, and this is a wonderful opportunity to make my pursuit of the Explorer’s Grand Slam bigger and greater than just myself,” he adds. “If I can do good for other people while reaching my goals, it’s a win-win.”

hile few things in life are certain or guaranteed, Michele Diamond, president of Diamond Retirement Strategies (DRS), makes a great point when she notes that, “Retirement is inevitable.” Because of this eventuality, Diamond and her dedicated team at DRS have worked with clients in all stages of retirement planning for over two decades and counting. “No two clients will ever be the same, just like a fingerprint,” Michele says. “My company is built on a foundation of ensuring that clients receive an experience rather than just a transaction.” DRS provides a breath of fresh air while providing comprehensive and professional advice. This provides clarity and confidence to clients as they are guided through their personal retirement journey.

Your Go-To Retirement Experts Diamond Retirement Strategies has been licensed and practicing for over 20 years, working to assist clients in all stages of retirement planning. DRS is currently licensed and active in 28 states nationwide—and counting. As independent agents, their team can work with numerous financial organizations as well as industry-related companies nationwide to assist with finding the right solution for clients’ current and future long-term goals. “Whether you are looking to retire in the near future, are currently retired, or just exploring options, we can offer you a no-cost, no obligation consultation,” Michele explains. Over the past 10 years, Michele has traveled across the country sponsoring retirement planning seminars. These events were designed to better assist those needing educational information on the several topics within retirement. Her team at DRS is dedicated to continuing education and is a member of the National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors (NAIFA) as well as the National Association of Professional Advisors (NAPA). In addition, DRS is also involved in local and national groups committed to supporting women and women business owners, which is Michele’s true passion. “As a female business owner in a predominantly male industry, I feel it is necessary to empower other women. My goal is to encourage other women to take charge of their own retirement and help them to independently improve their financial future,” she explains. “My hope is that women will want to become more involved with the retirement planning process.” During the recent pandemic, through online networking, webinars, and even virtual happy hours, Michele was able to stay connected and continue to make an impact in the community. This is when the “Women, Wealth, and Wine” concept was first established. This event is a fun, safe, and educational experience that allows women the opportunity to laugh, interact, share experiences, and learn from one another. Michele is a member of the International Association of Women (IAW), Women in Insurance & Financial Services (WIFS), and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). AT DRS, CLIENTS RECEIVE AN EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN JUST A TRANSACTION.

Michele shares that she has always been passionate about helping clients thoroughly understand the complexities of retirement by showing them easyto-understand strategies. After meeting and listening to clients’ specific needs, she works with her team to provide individualized solutions.

“Retirement planning does not have to be a dull and boring experience,” she says. “As we partner with our clients, our goal is to create a strong foundation of understanding and transparency to allow for a more comfortable and stress-free experience. The process will seem more like a teeth cleaning rather than having to get a tooth pulled— so I promise it won’t hurt a bit!” Diamond Retirement Strategies believes in putting clients first. “We strongly believe retirement income planning requires both a process and a personalized strategy to achieve optimal success. We are with you all the way,” she

Michele explains that when creating a retirement plan for one’s financial future, generally the client has two choices: the long-term growth potential of stocks or the lower returns of more conservative alternatives. “Ideally, you want your financial vehicle to offer the upside potential of stocks, with none of those downside risks,” she clarifies. “As independent agents, we can offer products of these types that are 100% safe from market volatility. Concerns such as higher inflation, the ever-increasing cost of living, the never-ending rental wars with higher rates, increasing medical costs, and more are valid. The need for additional fixed income to last throughout your retirement is becoming a major concern for seniors in today’s world.” Let Diamond Retirement Strategies Help You Today! Never Any Fees. Because Michele and her team are licensed insurance agents and not brokers, they will never charge a fee for their consultations or when they take on a client. At DRS, their motto is, “Successful strategies for successful planning.”

“We like to say, ‘When the market is up, you’re up! When the market is down, you’re not!’ The vast majority of people are not aware these types of options even exist. Additionally, some can even offer you a guaranteed lifetime of income that you can never outlive,” she adds.

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Sheryl Jane Bronkesh and I am the president of the Phoenix Holocaust Association (phxha.com).

by Bullets,” at the Hayden Library on the Tempe campus until April 17. Before dinner, there is another walk with my dog. My day nearly always ends with a show on HGTV or an episode of the “Great British Baking Show.” MY FAMILY IS… Myself, my daughter and close friends. My daughter is a graduate of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale and then went to college in Connecticut. I am happy she settled in Los Angeles after college. My car knows the way from Scottsdale to L.A. quite well as I have visited multiple times during the past two years. Because I don’t have biological family living in Arizona, my friends are my family.

I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 42 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The walking paths, hiking trails, great parks, and beauty in every direction I look. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… As soon as I awake – which is usually around 5 a.m. – I play word games on my phone before getting up for coffee. Next on the agenda, every day, is walking my poodle, Lily. Our walks are getting shorter because she is nearly 13 and is slowing down. Two days a week I work out with a fantastic trainer and one morning a week I hike in the preserve with friends. Typical days include many hours at my computer, Zoom meetings, and calls. Lately, I have been going to ASU for meetings about Genocide Awareness Week and to give docent tours of the exhibit “Holocaust

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A journalist. My undergraduate degree is in journalism although I realized early on that I didn’t want to be an investigative journalist. Through a college internship, I was exposed to public relations and marketing. That was a good fit. THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME ARE… My parents. I do what I do at the Phoenix Holocaust Association to honor the memory of my parents, both Holocaust survivors, and the memory of my ancestors who were murdered during World War II. My parents emigrated to the United States as refugees after the war with no material goods, had to learn a new language and make a way for themselves and their baby daughter, my sister, who was born in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. I came along a few years later while they were

living in Bronx, New York. When I was four, we moved to southern New Jersey to a chicken farm. Neither had ever raised chickens but through incredibly hard work they gave us a home, food, piano lessons, and education with both daughters going to college and graduate school. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… I have a special relationship with a friend’s granddaughters, aged two and almost five. Whenever I take care of them, something they say or do always makes me laugh. The innocence of youth is awesome to observe. The silver lining to the pandemic has been getting close to these girls as I helped care for them while they were kept out of daycare and their parents worked from home. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… The Phoenix Holocaust Association. As a partnership of Holocaust survivors, their descendants and the larger community, the Phoenix Holocaust Association (PHA) honors the memory and legacy of the survivors and victims, promotes awareness of the Holocaust, provides education of this and other genocides, and contributes to “tikkun olam,” which means, “repair of the world.” PHA provides, sponsors, and supports a number of Holocaust education related events and programs, as well as provides speakers, materials and references to Holocaust information.

genocide education through my role as president of the PHA and chair of the community advisory board for Genocide Awareness Week at ASU. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… That my daughter, who doesn’t enjoy traveling like I do, agreed to travel with my mother (who was 88 at the time) and me in 2009 to Poland and Ukraine to retrace my family roots. While the reason for our journey was a difficult one – my mother fled her home in 1941 to survive the Holocaust – our trip forged strong bonds between generations. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... Was from my mother who always stressed the importance of education because it is the one thing no one can take away from you. Growing up, money was extremely limited in my family but there was never a question that I would attend college. A few years after completing college, I decided to go to graduate school at ASU, where I got my MBA.

MY LIFE IS… Fulfilling. Since retiring from my career, I have focused my energy on promoting Holocaust and myhyperlocalnews.com

Does Your Real Estate Agent Really Have Your Best Interest In Mind? By Scott Gaertner, Associate Broker

R

ecently I noticed that there was a new movie on Netflix based on one of my favorite books and I decided to watch it. If you haven’t read “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything,” then I suggest you at least watch the movie. The book is authored by Steven Levitt, a brilliant economist who uses economic concepts to investigate human behavior. What I like about it is how it questions our assumptions and, as the title says, investigates the dark side of things. Believe me when I say that this is not a boring economics story. One reviewer called it, “A fascinating look at examples of cheating teachers, bizarre baby names, crack-selling mama’s boys and self-dealing realtors.” SELF-DEALING REALTORS? I’m writing about “Freakonomics” here because of the section regarding Levitt’s theory on “self-dealing realtors.” In a normal client-agent interaction, according to Levitt, the agents’ and clients’ incentives are not appropriately aligned. He discusses a clever statistical study he conducted to demonstrate that agents have no financial motivation to obtain you the best price for your home. Obtaining an additional $10,000 from a seller, for example, will normally only net the agent $150 more. He believes that there is insufficient justification for their readiness to wait for better offers so they advise you to accept the first offer you receive. And, unfortunately, he’s probably correct in a lot of cases. However, I do

not believe this is the case with a local area specialist agent—meaning an agent who decides to concentrate his business and become an expert in a specific geographic area rather than working all over the place.

The area-specializing agent understands their business model has their incentives aligned perfectly with their clientele. Using a local agent specialist has a slew of other benefits in addition to making clients more money. But if they are truly meaningful shouldn’t all those advantages translate into better sales prices for the local agent’s clients? NOBODY KNOWS IT BETTER A local specialist will be familiar with the local businesses, schools, and all the attractive features in the region. They should be able to sell the lifestyle as well as the house. They’ll know where to pinpoint the greatest dog parks, wine bars, unique restaurants, and hangout spots for the locals. Not only will a local realtor be able to detail the best cycling and hiking trails in the area, but they will also know the people in the area and have a powerful awareness of the nuances that you won’t find out about online. They have an intimate knowledge of comparable sales, area seasonality, and which characteristics impact home values most. They can confidently answer any question a buyer can throw at them. A local expert is familiar with the best methods for marketing your home to the right kind of buyer. Scottsdale North has a unique demographic from the rest of the Valley. If the agent has been specializing in the area for a long time, they should have a steady stream of buyers as well as a strong network of local experts, providers, and vendors. If the local agent does these things properly, these advantages should translate into more money and better transactions for the folks who choose to list their homes with them. If that’s the case, the local agent will easily be able to demonstrate the value that their local expertise provides, both statistically and through positive ratings. The local real estate expert should feel that every dollar their client’s homes sell above the area average comes back to them tenfold. that is how much more our clients’ properties sold for in 2021 than the Scottsdale North average. SELF-DEALING THE EXPERT WAY I can agree with the “Freakonomics” theory that some “self-dealing” agents’ goals are not properly aligned with their clients. However, when it comes to a good local agent expert, I respectfully disagree. The local agent “self-deals” by ensuring that all their client’s real estate objectives are met or exceeded. That kind of self-dealing ensures the word-of-mouth and statistical proof required for a long and fruitful career promoting his local community. If you’re looking to sell in our area of expertise, we’d be happy to show you everything we do to ensure that we continue to sell three times as many listings for much more money than anybody else. STEAM: Science, Technology,

A legacy of caring

Below is some information to educate you on changes that have occurred for 2022. Elementary school students formerly took the AzMERIT to assess their proficiency in reading, writing, and math. The state of Arizona has now moved to administering the AASA (Arizona’s Academic Standards Assessment). Third grade students will also take a

new assessment this year—ORF (Oral Reading Fluency), which measures the rate at which they can read an unfamiliar passage. Students will use headphones with a microphone to submit their test online. Fifth grade students will also continue to take AzSCI, a test measuring their proficiency in science, which includes standards covered in grade 3-5. Like elementary students, middle school students formerly took the AzMERIT and will now take the AASA to assess their proficiency in writing, reading, and math. Eighth grade students will continue to take the AzSCI, a test measuring their proficiency in science, which includes standards covered in grade 6-8. Arizona high school students used to take AzMERIT end of course assessments. The state of Arizona has now changed their high school assessment to the ACT exam for all 11th grade students and the ACTAspire exam for all 9th grade students. Eleventh grade students will also take the AzSCI, which measures their proficiency in science and includes standards covered in grades 9-11. Thank you for your support. CCUSD looks forward to this time when our students can truly shine through these examinations.

READY, SET, CAMP! HOW TO SELECT THE BEST SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier

T

he summer months are coming and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy while they’re out of school. One solution is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.

options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for nonprofit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community centers and libraries, and online offerings for lower cost options for summer camp. Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents who need a place for their kids during the summer break, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have planned. Start the Search Now: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child, and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family.

Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money. Be sure that you consider all the expenses involved, including equipment, meals, and extras. There are also a variety of

Using an Estate Planning Attorney is a Good Plan By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks

A

s an estate planning attorney, I often get calls from people who’ve used online trust or will planning software, gone to a cheap trust mill, or had their friend, the former corporate attorney, put their plan together with forms they found in a book. When I’m asked about whether these are good ideas, I like to tell a story about my dear husband. My husband Andy is a great handyman. It’s wonderful that I can ask him to fix things around the house and know he will do it right. Once, he installed a cool new stove top in our home. It was all going smoothly until he put in the new vent hood. I stood across the kitchen watching him, then walked over to the door for a better vantage point as he finished the wiring. Suddenly, the light bulbs in the hood blew out and the fan spun across the room to hit the cabinet – right where I had been standing not 30 seconds before. “Honey,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “Do you think it’s time to call an electrician?” We were lucky. No one got electrocuted due to the error and I didn’t get my head shaved by the fan. But we concluded that there are times when it is best to call in the experts. The same is true when you prepare a will

or trust. If you don’t do the job right, it may well be too late before you – or more likely, your family – finds out. Without proper estate planning, your family may end up in court. If you are incapacitated, they may have to go to court and declare you unable to handle your affairs so one of them can be appointed as your guardian and conservator. If you are deceased, your family may have to file a probate to transfer your property to your heirs. Experts know things we don’t. As an estate planning attorney, I know what to recommend for you based on your situation, your beneficiaries, your assets, your goals, and dreams. You may not know all the ways you can benefit your heirs, or all the ways you can cause problems for them with a poorly drafted will or trust. The cost of poor planning or no planning almost always exceeds the price of setting up a proper estate plan while you are alive and well. Putting the right plan in place and using an attorney who practices primarily or exclusively in estate planning will save your family heartache and expense. For more information, go to our website at LibbyBanks.com or call 602-3756752. On our website you can request a free initial consultation and sign up our newsletter for periodic updates on legal issues affecting your will or trust plan.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

IN THEATERS

Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.

the last few days of Yang’s life, finding out more about him, and the family’s reactions. The film touches on the melancholic discovery about who the person you thought you knew really was and the highs and lows of remembering them. It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

ON NETFLIX

all over the movie, killing any form of sincerity or emotional qualities. Several actors in the film are barely used; they are less characters and more objects to advance the story. Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

“Studio 666” The Foo Fighters move into an old mansion to complete their new album, only to discover the remains of its dark past. This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds

Getaway

Las Palomas BEACH & GOLF RESORT

A stunning waterfront resort situated along the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico Photos Courtesy of Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort

D

uring the hot, dry summer, Arizonans crave sea breezes, cool ocean water, relaxation and activities that will keep the whole family active and entertained. While seaside resorts aren’t part of our desert landscape, Puerto Peñasco (commonly referred to as Rocky Point), is often considered “Arizona’s beach” due to its proximity to our border and its popularity as a vacation destination for desert dwellers. Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, located in the exclusive Sandy Beach area of Rocky Point, features more than 800 contemporary condos perfect for families, friends and couples looking for a beach getaway just hours away from Phoenix.

Luxury condominiums range from one to four bedrooms, each with its own terrace or balcony to take in the breathtaking views and can sleep up to 10 people. Las Palomas was the first resort in Rocky Point to receive a four-diamond rating from AAA. It has also been recognized with a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award for two years in a row, placing it in the top 10 percent of hotels worldwide. It’s located just 10 minutes from Old Port and downtown — where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and shops — and popular Rocky Point watering holes and attractions with live music on the beach. Jacques Cousteau once called Mexico’s Sea of Cortéz “the world’s aquarium.” Set against the sea, and its beautiful beaches, Las Palomas is an ideal locale for exploring or simply taking in the views. Those looking for an active vacation can enjoy Las Palomas as their home base for deep sea fishing, snorkeling, parasailing, or kayaking in the Sea of Cortéz, or hiking or cycling in the surrounding areas. Even if you choose to stay on the secured grounds of the resort, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for every member of the family. 34 • April 2022 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

You can pack light for a road trip to Las Palomas – bathing suits and flip flops are all you need during the day, when you can drift on the property’s lazy river, take a trip down the water slide, or lounge in a gorgeous negative-edge pool, taking in the spectacular views and enjoying a cocktail from one of the swim-up bars. Or stroll over to the full-service spa to indulge in a massage, facial or body treatment. Bring workout wear if you want to participate in activities like Zumba, Aquaerobics, or stretching, or to exercise in the fitness center. If golf is more your speed, Las Palomas is home to The Links, the only true links golf course on Sandy Beach. Open to the public, it is a professional 18-hole, par-72 course that hosts several events throughout the year and attracts world class professional and amateur players, such as the resort’s annual anniversary golf tournament to be held May 13-15. If you’re looking for world-class cuisine, Las Palomas is the home of one of the finest restaurants in Rocky Point, La Maria Bistro & Fine Cuisine, featuring Mexican and world fusion in a beautiful seaside setting. Or enjoy gourmet options from Citron Fine Cuisine, Las Palomas’ French themed full-service restaurant. Both venues feature charming bars that are perfect gathering spots for enjoying fine wine, cervezas, margaritas or sophisticated cocktails. There’s always something happening at Las Palomas, whether a gastronomy class, a beer or wine tasting, or a holiday celebration. You can make a vacation to Rocky Point as adventurous or as laid-back as you want it to be – and even change it up from day to day. * Must present coupon or ad at the time of initial appointment. Offers are first appointment incentives only and only good if both decision-makers are present. Cannot combine offers. Dustless tile removal does not actually mean no dust, rather a lot less dust and still a construction site and will need professional cleaning. $189 per month based on 36-month financing including basic installation and product with 1000sf or less, and room size 12x15. Rooms greater in size or using upgraded flooring will add additional monthly costs. Does not include stairs or rip up. Financing is based on approved credit. $5,500 min purchase for free air duct cleaning. Free home disinfectant service makes no claims to kill COVID-19 or prevent it.
