lmost five decades ago, Dr. James Tupper set out for Antarctica aboard a U.S. Navy ship. While docked in South America, he witnessed some of the most disadvantaged families living in shacks built on islands of garbage, a water system completely contaminated by sewage, adults and children suffering from malnutrition, cleft lips and a mouthful of missing teeth.

After fulfilling his military duties, Tupper began his surgical residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He loved medicine, but the suffering he witnessed during his time abroad continued to invade his thoughts, so in 1963, he gave up a promising career as a surgeon for his priestly vocation.

He was ordained in 1969, vowing to care for the bodies and souls of the poorest among us. Returning to those Brazilian communities, determined to carry out this mission, he soon realized he lacked the necessary resources including medical supplies, laboratory facilities, surgical equipment and standard medication to truly make an impact.

After expressing his concerns, family members and friends immediately rallied to help. In 1970, his brother, a lawyer in Phoenix, incorporated a nonprofit organization in order to support his efforts. Deemed “Esperança Inc.” from the Portuguese word for “hope,” Tupper was no longer in this fight alone.

Soon, the organization became known as a symbol of hope for those who have learned to live hopelessly. And the mission remains the same to this day—nearly 50 years later.

Through fundraising, donations and active volunteers, Esperança now provides medical missions to such places as Peru, Mozambique, Ecuador, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

In addition, volunteers and indigenous partners provide these communities with access to clean water, stable sources of food, disease prevention, health education and ecological home-building.

“Although I am a general surgeon within the U.S., I feel truly fulfilled when I am volunteering my time overseas,” said Dr. Brandt Feuerstein, a volunteer surgeon for Esperança. “I am able to combine my studies and training as a surgeon to provide necessary medical care, in a culturally sensitive way, to international locations where they are needed most.”

Esperança’s mission to improve health and provide hope for families in the poorest communities now includes

those in the Phoenix area, with the organization’s domestic program.

“While conducting these global missions, we realized there were so many more people that could benefit from our services—many of which are located right in the Phoenix area,” said Jeri Royce, president and CEO of Esperança. “In 2000, we launched our domestic program in order to serve our community’s most under-resourced children, adults and seniors.”

By partnering with Title I schools, dental clinics and community centers, Esperança’s bilingual and bicultural health educators provide children with oral health literacy, referrals for free or low-cost dental care and daily health and wellness exercises. They stress the importance of nutrition and physical activity, providing information in a language and at a level the kids can understand.

Known as Salud con Sabor Latino (Health with a Latin Flavor), adult classes are built around the idea that a family can be healthy, without losing touch with their culture.

Participants engage in hands-on activities, such as cooking sessions and tours of local grocery stores. Further, the team offers parent-ambassador training, which teaches parents about public health and how to be a strong advocate for their children.

“Whether local or global, we don’t enter communities with the intention to disrupt their way of life, rather we listen to their needs and give them the tools, training and support they need to succeed,” said Royce.

SCOTTSDALE SHIFTS PHOTO ENFORCEMENT LOCATIONS BASED ON SPEED, CRASH DATA

Photo enforcement systems on Thomas Road eastbound at Hayden Road and McDowell Road eastbound at Scottsdale Road will be deactivated.

Choosing which locations are no longer needed photo enforcement, and selecting new locations was a data-based decision made after city traffic engineers analyzed an aggregate of collision, red light/speeding violations, collision severity and traffic volume data.

“The technology helps us enforce traffic laws and allows us to maximize the deployment of our patrol officers throughout the city,” said Alex Ristuccia, Scottsdale Police Program Manager of Photo Enforcement.

Scottsdale has used photo enforcement systems since 1996. A 2017 study by Lee Engineering, an independent firm specializing in research and forensic traffic engineering, showed that overall crashes decreased by 23 to 24 percent, and crashes related specifically to red-light running decreased 33 to 35 percent at the city’s existing intersections with red-light and speeding photo enforcement.

The study added to a growing body of research conducted both in the Valley and nationwide that demonstrates the effectiveness of photo enforcement for reducing traffic violations and crashes.

“If you reduce the problem of speeding, you automatically reduce the problem of people violating red lights because they can stop,” said Scottsdale Transportation Director Paul Basha.

Scottsdale’s fixed intersection safety cameras operate 24/7 and capture both red-light violators and those exceeding the speed limit by 11 miles-per-hour or more. For the first 30 days of operation, warnings will be issued to drivers who speed through or run red-lights at the new locations. The fixed intersection safety cameras will work in conjunction with the mobile vans and portable photo enforcement towers, which rotate around the city based on citizen complaints and speed data.

All violations and citations are reviewed and approved by police employees.

AG BRNOVICH WARNS OF SPIKE IN RESALE SCAMS INVOLVING TIMESHARES IN MEXICO ATTORNEY GENERAL MARK BRNOVICH IS WARNING ARIZONANS ABOUT A RISE IN SOPHISTICATED SCAMS RELATED TO THE SALE OF TIMESHARE INTERESTS IN MEXICO. Scammers often posing as real estate brokers contact consumers and claim that a buyer would like to purchase or rent the consumer’s existing timeshare interest at a location in Mexico. The con artists tell consumers that a buyer wants to pay tens of thousands of dollars for their timeshare, but the consumer must pay money upfront for taxes, or put money into an escrow account.

The consumer is directed to wire money to accounts in Mexico. The scammers will attempt to continue to extract money from the consumer until the consumer runs out of money or realizes they’ve been scammed.

Although these scams are typically operated by individuals within the country of Mexico, scammers frequently conceal their identity by using the name of legitimate businesses in the United 4 • April 2019 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

States, often using the names of businesses registered with the Arizona Corporation Commission that have been inactive for years. Scammers will also create new, slick websites to appear legitimate, and populate internet sites with fake reviews. In some cases, con artists have even posed as part of Mexico’s government and say the Mexican government has set up a fund to assist victims of timeshare fraud in Mexico.

“Our office has seen an increase in consumer complaints involving timeshare resale scams in Mexico,” said Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

“These scammers know some people are desperate to get out of their timeshares and prey upon that vulnerability to steal their money. Never wire or send money to people you don’t know or to a stranger in another country.”

FIRE OFFICIALS URGE RESIDENTS IN URBAN INTERFACE TO REDUCE THREAT

By Scottsdale Fire Department RECENT RAINS HAVE GREENED UP OUR DESERT, WHICH WILL SOON BECOME DRY FUEL AS OUR SUMMER HEATS UP. In Scottsdale, with so many homes in urban interface areas, these dangers are especially concerning.

Even with nature’s threat, it is possible to minimize the community’s risk with these types of incidents.

The following steps can be taken to protect property from a wildland fire.

• Create a 30’ foot defensible safety zone around individual homes and properties by removing flash fuels, thinning overgrown vegetation in these defensible space areas, and removing dry and dead vegetation around the home.

• Manage the vegetation fuel load by initially focusing on and removing invasive plants, especially around permanent residential structures.

• Trim the lower branches on trees, up to 4ft to

6ft from the desert floor and remove overgrown branches from the roof and patio areas of the home.

• Address and remove the accumulation of dead branches or leaves, especially near structures.

• Do not keep flammable items or allow excessive foliage to collect underneath wooden decks and other combustible overhangs.

• Keep eaves, gutters, and roofs clear of leaves and combustible debris.

• Keep a garden hose connected to exterior hose bibs and available for use.

• Be keenly aware of potential ignition sources like fireplaces, BBQ grills, improper disposal of smoking materials and fireworks.

• If you believe you see a wildfire incident, call 911 immediately while the fire is still small and before you take action yourself.

ENHANCED ARIZONA 511 TRAVELER INFORMATION SYSTEM LAUNCHED ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES EASY ACCESS TO ROAD CONDITIONS A MODERNIZED, MOBILEFRIENDLY ARIZONA 511 TRAVEL INFORMATION SYSTEM WEBSITE AND PHONE LINE ARE NOW AVAILABLE FROM THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. The new system uses the latest technology to provide a customized experience with realtime updates from ADOT, the premier source of information on Arizona’s highway system.

The new AZ511.gov website allows users to save their favorite routes and most used traffic cameras. Before leaving for a destination, drivers can log onto AZ511.gov to view incidents along their route, get estimated travel times to their destination and receive alternate route suggestions.

Travelers may set up text or email alerts for their routes. Users can also call the 511 phone line to hear perscottsdalenorthnews.com

sonalized updates. The 511 phone line is now easier to navigate and voice recognition has been upgraded.

“Drivers have always turned to ADOT for the most accurate information on Arizona’s highways. The improved website and phone line make it even easier to access the information drivers need to make informed decisions when traveling throughout our state,” said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “As Governor Ducey has said, the principal job of state government is to protect and improve the quality of life for our citizens. Embracing new technology and offering better information to support motorist safety aligns with his charge to state agencies.”

The new site is easy to navigate and includes information not previously available. Speed maps for all of Arizona’s roadways are displayed. Motorists can see the weather forecast, radar,

and National Weather Service watches and warnings. Border wait times have also been added. ADOT’s Twitter feed is visible on the home page, making it easy for travelers to get their questions answered by ADOT public information officers.

The 511 phone system includes the ability to transfer directly to state and national parks, airports, and other transportation-related contacts. Additionally, the phone system will allow callers to transfer to the Arizona Adopt a Highway system to report those who litter.

Soon to follow is an AZ511 mobile app for iOS and Android that will offer route planning, advanced monitoring of route conditions, and “drive mode” that will read off critical alerts to drivers.

“The new Arizona Traveler Information System was born out of demand from Arizona motorists for more information – especially during critical events like snowstorms or highway closures. With a 24/7 operations

center, ADOT is the principal source of this information,” said Dr. Timothy Tait, ADOT’s director of communications. “While these new services have officially launched, we are still adding features, addressing issues and catching bugs. If you see something we can improve, be sure to look for ‘Contact Us’ under the ‘About’ link on the website.”

ADOT set up its statewide 511 phone line in 2002 and is part of the nationally-designated three-digit phone number for traveler information. Over the past year, AZ511.gov had more than 65 million hits and the 511 phone line received more than 430,000 calls.

The new AZ511 system is part of a range of tools used by ADOT to help drivers safely navigate the state.

With the ADOT Alerts app – available at ADOTAlerts.com – more than 65,000 users are receiving alerts about crashes, serious weather or closures of highways to help them make informed driving decisions based on their location using geofencing technology.

BANNER ALZHEIMER’S TO HOST MUSICAL SERIES FOR PATIENTS AND THEIR CARE PARTNERS MUSIC CAN AFFECT US IN POWERFUL WAYS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO MOOD AND MEMORY. In support of this engaging connection, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is proud to introduce Passport to Music in 2019 in partnership with the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). The new life enrichment program is designed for persons with mild to moderate memory loss and their care partners. The participants will experience a different region of the world each week through music being encouraged to explore memories and engage in interactive experiences in this unique environment. MIM fosters appreciation of the world’s diverse cultures by showing how we innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the language of the soul.

“We’re excited to offer this series to people and families within our com-

munity, because it offers an opportunity to help them remain socially active and engaged which is key to maintaining quality of life,” said Lori Nisson, LCSW, Family and Community Services director. “Recent studies convey the health benefits of music intervention for these patients. People living with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias maintain musical aptitude and appreciation. While dementia affects mood, memory and language; music can function as a powerful tool in eliciting positive memories, emotions and interactions.”

Local resident Diane Gerdts has seen the positive results music has had on her 85-year old husband Marlin, who has been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He was first diagnosed about four years ago. Being a previous choir director, Diane knows the power and influence of music so was thrilled to

participate during the pilot program.

She said she couldn’t believe how much Marlin enjoyed himself. “My husband really blossomed during that event. That was a joy to me,” she said.

“But it was also a great experience for me to meet other families and caregivers. We’re all going through the same journey in different ways, and that connection was incredible.”

The Passport to Music series will be offered over the course of five weeks during 2019, and participants are encouraged to attend all sessions in their selected series. Each session will take place from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Musical Instrument Museum, main entrance lobby, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix.

TOWN OF CAREFREE NAMES 2017 CAREFREE DESERT GARDENS ANNOUNCES

SPIRIT OF CAREFREE AWARD RECIPIENT DATES FOR ANNUAL GARDEN PHOTO CONTEST KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE DESERT FOOTHILLS AREA AS “CAREFREE SANTA,” RON BACHER HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS THE 2017 RECIPIENT OF THE SPIRIT OF CAREFREE AWARD, UNDERWRITTEN BY SANDERSON LINCOLN. This annual distinction honors Carefree residents who demonstrate above-and-beyond dedication to the community and its residents. The award will be presented during the Town’s Community Block Party event on Saturday, April 6 at 3 p.m., and will be accepted by Mr. Bacher’s widow, Annette Bacher.

“Ron actually WAS Santa to those of us who knew him and loved him,” noted Carefree Mayor Les Peterson.

“Many area children who grew up with Ron being the ‘Carefree Santa’ for a decade miss his twinkling eyes, his hearty laugh and his always positive personality. His spirit of cooperation and his willingness to share his many talents capture the essence of the Carefree spirit, that of giving back unselfishly to the community.

He is a most deserving recipient of the award.”

Ron Bacher relocated to Phoenix from his native Chicago in 1972 and was an accomplished jewelry artist and woodworker. He was perhaps best known throughout the area for his distinctive long, white beard, and each Christmas season he became Santa Claus for the Town’s annual holiday celebrations.

His woodworking artistry can still be viewed in the Carefree Desert Gardens, as he was the creator of the post for the Little Free Library located on the west side of the gardens. Mr. Bacher passed away suddenly of a heart attack on March 26, 2018.

The Spirit of Carefree Award, established in 2013, is presented on an annual basis in recognition of those individuals that demonstrate dedication and service to the Foothills community, and Carefree in particular. Previous recipients include former Town councilman Arthur Gimson, former Carefree Mayor David Schwan, and local business owners Harry Vardakis and Steve Woods.

CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS! The Town of Carefree is again holding its annual Carefree Desert Gardens Photo Contest, with submissions being accepted beginning Monday, April 1 in several location throughout the Town.

Entries vie for the popular “Peoples’ Choice Award” as voted by the public, which will be presented in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion on Friday, May 10, in conjunction with National Public Gardens Day.

“The Carefree Desert Gardens present a wide array of spectacular photographic opportunities,” shared Mayor Les Peterson. “Opportunities abound – from the exotic desert plants sprinkled throughout to magical sunrises and sunsets; from spectacular mountain vistas to the memorable people who stroll through the Gardens. Take your pick and let your imagination and photographic skills capture a masterpiece!”

Images must be taken within the Carefree Desert Gardens in the Carefree

Town Center, with no time constraints on when the images were taken.

Photographers are limited to a maximum of three image entries, and all entries must be received no later than Friday, April 26. Submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel, and 12 images will be selected to compete for the “Peoples’ Choice”, with voting taking place at the Desert Foothills Library from April 27–May 5.

OCTANE RACEWAY ANNOUNCES NEW SISTER CONCEPT – MAVRIX

NEW FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CENTER TO OFFER BOWLING, LASER TAG, ARCADE GAMES, CHEF-DRIVEN MENU

S

cottsdale will soon welcome Mavrix, the Valley’s newest entertainment hub, offering 24 lanes of upscale bowling, 85 arcade games, state-of-the-art laser tag, billiards tables, dozens of 4K televisions, 1,500 square feet of meeting and event space, a 5,000 square-foot restaurant and bar featuring chef-prepared menu items and a large outdoor games patio.

Mavrix will be the latest addition to Octane Entertainment’s roster, the parent group known for Octane Raceway, Arizona’s premium kart racing facility, and Velocity VR, the state’s only free-roam virtual reality gaming arena.

Mavrix will be located in the 50,000 square-foot retail space next door to Octane Raceway at the Pavilions at Talking Stick. Mavrix and Octane Raceway will total a combined 110,000 square feet with shared access to the outdoor games patio, which

will connect the two entertainment powerhouses. Guests will be able to seamlessly flow between the two venues and use shared arcade game cards at both Mavrix and Octane Raceway.

“Talking Stick is booming with new development,” said Scott Sanders, CEO of Octane Raceway and owner of Octane Entertainment. “As a long-standing tenant, it’s exciting to contribute to the growth by delivering Mavrix, which will be the premier family entertainment center in the area. Octane Entertainment has had its sights on expansion, and when the space next door to Octane Raceway became available, it was too good to pass up.”

The Mavrix name pays tribute to the original story of Sam Maverick, an “independently-minded” rancher

who refused to follow convention and carved his own path into history.

t is getting to be that time again when our fine weather fowl friends will be leaving us, and we need to remind them of best practices for leaving.

THE SNOWBIRD’S CHECKLIST: Alert Your H.O.A. Most HOA’s have vacation watch programs. Let them know you are leaving.

Shut Some Power Off Turn off the breakers to anything that won’t need power including the microwave, range and dishwasher to minimize “power drain” and higher utility bills.

• Make sure the water heater is turned to “off” (not set to “pilot” or “vacation”) or you could cook the heater if you’re gone for a long time.

• Have someone come turn the water on once a month (at least) and run all fixtures and flush the toilets. Have them

also run a quick cycle in the washer. If not, the traps will dry out and the house will smell like a sewer.

• Fill a 5-gallon bucket of water, one for every bathroom and one in the kitchen, to keep moisture in the house so things don’t dry out too much. I recommend putting the buckets in the tub/shower and the kitchen sink to keep from making rings on the flooring.

• Plastic wrap over the toilets will slow down evaporation. Choose colored wrap to avoid… well, you know! Some people even put a little vegetable oil in the sink/tub/shower drains to slow down evaporation.

MARKETING MATTERS - ANOTHER DISTRESSED SELLER SAVED

I

t happened again! I recently wrote an article in this paper describing how choosing the right real estate agent to sell your home can make a huge difference in terms of dollars, time on the market and overall peace of mind. In the article, I shared one of my favorite client success stories that happened last fall - our team took over a listing that had been on the market and not sold for five years with seven different agents.

We created a great marketing strategy and sold it in just eight days, for a full price that was higher than the last agent’s listing price.

Well, a similar client success story happened again this month, but this time with a twist. This time the agent called me and asked if I would take over the listing. Maybe this will be the second in a series of articles on how we save sellers in distress, but I can assure you that we don’t look for these failed listings - they find us. I promise you that we are not the people who continually call you when your listing expires. We do not do that, ever!

In this case, the home had been on the market for 1,192 days, or just over three years. The agent told me that the seller asked him to call me, and he asked if I would consider taking over the listing and paying him a referral fee. I agreed.

I told the seller that he wasn’t overpriced, he was undermarketed. We went in and made some pretty dramatic but simple changes to the marketing. The seller was absolutely incredible and did everything we asked - including starring in a video! (This guy was a captain of industry, but I think he may have missed his calling as an on-screen personality.)

We raised the price by $10,000, put it on the market with the new marketing strategy, and received an offer the very first day. After a few days in negotiation, we are now in escrow waiting to close and our seller will get move on with his life.

We don’t mind helping distressed sellers in need, and we absolutely love the success stories. But it is counterproductive to have a home sit on the market for a long time. The listing becomes stigmatized as potential buyers wonder what is wrong with the home. If you want to sell a home quickly and for top dollar, skip all those headaches and give us a call first.

As I write this, it feels uncomfortably braggy, which turns my stomach a bit. But I think this is very important information to convey to you. My point is this: marketing matters and the agent you choose to sell your home matters.

(By the way, I purposely didn’t name the seller, the previous agent, or the property to avoid embarrassing anyone.)

WATER SAFETY IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN

By Jill “Mamabug” Frier ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for Phoenix, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies and first responders come out in droves this time of year to caution parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs and ponds.

Here are some safety tips from the experts and local resources for you to help you keep your kids safe around water.

PREVENTING DROWNING The best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone down and be sure to keep children within reach of an adult. And never leave a child alone around a water source – it only takes two inches of water to drown.

Other important ways to prevent drowning are to: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house.

• Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices, near the pool and readily available.

• Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area or store toys near the pool.

• Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys or ladders, away from pool fences.

• Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are around the pool and take the kids with you when you leave the area.

Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers and kiddie pools immediately after you use them and store them upside down so they don’t collect water. Keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed.

HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Accidents happen and sometimes kids find their way to the pool or water source, despite your best efforts. Do you know what to do in an emergency?

An accident by definition is unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, child or adult.

The main steps to remember if you find someone in trouble in a water emergency are:

• Yell for help and pull the person out of the water.

• Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions.

• Begin CPR, if you know it.

• If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.

Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life.

POOL SAFETY TIPS One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. There are many different options for swimming lessons and a huge range of prices, times and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town, or go to a city pool or non-profit community center. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning.

Here are some specific tips to keep kids, and adults, safe around the pool this summer: • Learn to swim – this is the best way to gain respect for the water and keep yourself afloat.

• Never swim alone – use the buddy system, whether you are an adult or keeping an eye on kids.

• Never swim under the influence of alcohol or medications – it’s hard to prevent drowning if you’re not awake, alert and attentive.

• Never swim when you hear thunder or see lightning – electricity and water are a bad combination.

• Never dive into an unfamiliar body of water – you never know what will be at the bottom.

• Learn CPR – you may just save someone’s life one day.

o further elevate the stature of one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) recently announced that the month of April will once again be designated “National Pickleball Month.”

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) 2018 Pickleball Participant Report reported that the sport currently has 3.1 million players in the U.S. – an increase of 12% over the previous year. SFIA is the premier trade association for top brands, manufacturers, retailers and marketers in the American sporting goods and fitness industry since 1906.

Pickleball ambassadors and providers can utilize National Pickleball Month by scheduling events and social play in April, promoting tournaments throughout the month, offering special discounts for first-time players, or other local events to create additional programs and courts. National Pickleball Month will also generate renewed interest in the many health, fitness and social benefits of the sport.

For sports facilities, schools and communities, pickleball courts are easy to build. A pickleball court is 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, and many courts are lined on existing sports surfaces, such as tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, in addition to being built as “standalone” courts. The USAPA estimates that each month, 300 pickleball courts are created in the U.S., either by adding lines to existing courts or building standalone courts. To date, there are nearly 21,000 courts in the United States.

WINFIELD PICKLEBALL

mma Burns tells us that the Winfield pickleball courts officially opened for play Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. with over 30 residents enjoying their new amenity on the two recently completed courts. Construction began in early January after the community voted to add the two courts adjacent to tennis court one. Over 60 residents already belong to the newly formed Pickleball Club. Winfield tennis and pickleball pro Chris Cummings offers lessons to beginners and intermediate players. The new courts are open only to Winfield residents every weekday morning from 9 a.m. to noon and with online reservations for all other daylight hours. Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. are reserved for weekly socials. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 6 at 10 a.m. followed by lunch in the community’s Cafe. KARSTEN’S ACE PRESENTS IRRIGATION DIY TIPS

A

s you know, most homes in the Desert Southwest have irrigation systems to keep all of your plants green and healthy throughout the year. Maintaining your irrigation system is not as difficult as you would think. All you need is a nice day, which is plentiful here in the Valley of the Sun. We thought we would outline three areas that arise the most that you can handle all by yourself. Below you will find three helpful hints to repairing your irrigation system.

SOLENOID REPLACEMENT If your irrigation system is turned on and a valve does not seem to be working, first locate the valve.

It will either be in an inground valve box, or may be located above ground adjacent or in close proximity to the main water line into your home.

Once you have located your valves and determined which valve is not working, make sure all wires are properly connected to the solenoid on top of the valve. If they are and the valve is still not working, then you will need to replace the solenoid.

The solenoid is a small black cylinder about 2-3 inches in length and has two black wires attached to it. The solenoid’s main job is to operate the gate that is located inside the valve itself. The solenoid is screwed into the top of the valve and can be easily removed by detaching the black wires and unscrewing the cylinder out of the valve. Once this is completed, take your new solenoid and screw it back into the same location that you removed the bad one. Next, reattach the wires using waterproof wire nuts (note that the wires are color coded).

These wire nuts are usually blue in color and have gel in them to protect the wires from getting wet.

Once that is complete, wrap the wires and connectors with electrical tape to secure the joining of the wires and help keep the elements out.

Supplies needed: First determine what brand the water valve is by looking on top of the valve. The most popular valves are Orbit, Toro or Rainbird. LEAKY IRRIGATION TUBE LINE If you have water seeping out of your gravel or dirt in your yard, you will need to find the source. First you will need to grab a spade shovel with a pointed edge to dig a hole where the water is leaking. Once you have reached its source you can determine how to repair. Be careful while doing this so you do not make your matters worse by creating more leaks by damaging your existing water line. In most cases your leak is being caused by a crack in your irrigation tubing, which will happen over time due to the movement in the earth or if your hose is above ground, our beautiful warm sunshine will cause it to become brittle. From this point you will need to dig a wide enough hole to be able to repair the tubing.

If the crack is small, you can repair it by cutting the tube with a tube cutter and inserting each end of the tube into a coupler, and hand tightening to get a good fit. That is all there is to it. If your hose is damaged more than a simple hole or crack, you will probably need to replace part of the tubing. Once you have determined the extent of tubing damage, you will need to replace that tubing the same way that is mentioned above, by doing it twice on both ends of your new piece of tubing. Before you cover up the tube with the dirt, test the seal by turning your water back on and check for any leaking water. If you are free of any leaks or drips, you are good to go.

ADDING MORE DRIPPERS ONTO YOUR EXISTING SYSTEM If you would like to add more plants to your yard near what is already being watered by your drip system, it is very easy to add drippers to your line to water your new plants. The process starts by locating your existing ½” water line. Access the tubing by digging a hole big enough so you can poke a hole in the existing ½” line. Next you will need a ¼”

barbed connector that you will insert into the hole you made (pointed end is inserted into the hole), then add a precut ¼” tubing on the other end that will be long enough to reach your new plant. That tubing can either be buried or run along the top of the ground. At this point you would add a 1-4 gph (gallon per hour) dripper based on the requirements of the type of plant you are planting. This simple process can be followed wherever you decide to add a new plant.

If you would like your system to reach further into your yard or reach a plant that is further away, you can easily extend the length of your ½” tubing by adding a coupler and more tubing.

VETERANS OUTREACH CENTER RECEIVES NEW COMPUTERS

T

he Veterans Outreach Center (Catholic Charities/MANA House) in Phoenix helps support those Veterans who find themselves in difficult situations. Many of the Veterans who are allowed the privilege of using this facility are homeless. These men and women can enter the Center and grab a hot cup of coffee, a sandwich and fellowship. The Veterans who come to the Center have an opportunity to learn basic computer skills enabling them to get an entry level job; thus, helping them get off the street. For a number of years, Desert Foothills Lutheran Church (DFLC) in North Scottsdale has supported the Center with donations of non-perishable food, clothing and last year with Christmas gifts.

Recently, Tech 4 Life, a computer repair and web design company in Carefree, asked DFLC if they were in need of computers. The church responded with a definite “yes” and a call was made to Chuck Ashby at the Outreach Center. On February 26, Chuck received five newly refurbished computers for the Center. Chuck told DFLC that one lucky Veteran will receive a laptop when he transitions through MANA House.

A

s Phoenicians, we love to travel north towards Flagstaff, especially during the heat of summer. But one of our favorite areas to visit on weekend and day trips is nestled between Phoenix and Flagstaff, in the rolling hills of the Verde Valley, just south of Sedona. The small, rural towns of Camp Verde, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Cornville, Page Springs and Rimrock sit along the banks of the Verde River as charming little slices of Arizona history and western culture, just an hour or two from the Valley of the Sun. Here are a few of the spots we recommend you visit the next time you’re looking for a quick and unique getaway.

CAMP VERDE Camp Verde is the first stop on our list. The town prides itself on being “the center of it all,” due to its very central location in the state of Arizona.

Camp Verde is full of historic sites, ranging from Fort Verde State Park, a well-preserved example of the Arizona Territory in the wild west era of the late 1800s, to the nearby Montezuma’s Castle National Monument, an 800 year old legacy of the Sinagua people who lived in ancient Arizona. More modern attractions to the Camp Verde area include Out of Africa Wildlife Park, Cliff Castle Casino, and the Verde Valley Archeology Center. The climate is perfect and there are plenty

COTTONWOOD Cottonwood, known as the Heart of the Verde Valley Wine Trail, is a friendly haven for artists, foodies, wine and antique lovers. Once a small farming community, historic Old Town Cottonwood is now known for its Main Street, featuring cafes, restaurants, wine tasting rooms, antique stores, art galleries, hotels, shops and boutiques. The town is also home to Dead Horse Ranch State Park, a beautiful location for camping, hiking, boating and fishing near the Verde River Valley lagoons located in the area.

CLARKDALE Clarkdale, Arizona, just a few minutes down the road from Cottonwood on the way to Jerome, was designed and built

by Senator William Andrews Clark as a copper-smelting company town for the mine employees in Jerome. Although it has a population of less than 5000 people, Clarkdale is big a tourist attraction with daily train rides on the Verde Canyon Railroad bringing hundred of tourists to the area. It is also home to Tuzigoot National Monument, a fascinating look at ancient Sinagua pueblo ruins on a hilltop overlooking the Verde River. Visitors to Clarkdale can also

experience the Arizona Copper Art Museum, enjoy some of Verde Valley wine country’s finest at the Southwest Wine Center, or float down the Verde River with experienced local river outfitters through unspoiled riparian areas adjacent to the Audubon Important Birding Area in Tavasci Marsh.

CORNVILLE AND PAGE SPRINGS The tiny towns of Cornville and Page Springs are a bit further off the beaten path, on the road to Sedona between Cottonwood and Rimrock. Both communities sit alongside Oak Creek, a tributary of the Verde River flowing through Sedona, and both are part of the Verde Valley Wine Trail, in the heart of Arizona wine country. A trip north on the winding Page Springs Road out of Cornville will take you along a trail full of local wineries and beautiful scenery on the way to Sedona. Cornville was once the home of long-time Arizona Senator John McCain. Page Springs hosts the largest state run fish hatchery, the Page Springs Fish Hatchery, which is operated by Arizona Game and Fish and stocks more than 50 percent of the state’s trout population.

RIMROCK Rimrock is a small town north of Camp Verde along I-17, incorporating the Beaver Creek Communities of Lake Montezuma, Rimrock and McGuireville. Just down the Verde River from

Sedona, Rimrock is the town nearest to the Montezuma’s Well National Monument, the site of Sinagua ruins just downstream from the larger and more popular Montezuma’s Castle National Monument. The location of this monument is beautiful, lush and green, with a pueblo community built into a cliff overlooking a small, deep pond. Rimrock is also the gateway to the Beaver Creek Wilderness area, a perfect place to camp, hike and fish, just downriver from Sedona, and the fascinating V Bar V Ranch Heritage site, the largest and best-preserved petroglyph site in the Verde Valley. Most of the more than 1000 petroglyphs were created by the Sinagua people from about 900 AD until about 1350 AD. The Verde Canyon Railroad’s motto – “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” – is one of my very favorites. It applies to all of the trips that take you to visit the tiny towns and desert hideaways throughout our great state. The places listed here are just a few of our favorite spots to visit in the Verde Valley area of Arizona, but there are many more worth seeing. Take your time and enjoy the slow pace of the many small towns and communities that line the Verde River on the way to Sedona and Flagstaff from Phoenix.
