FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH:

SHOEBOX MINISTRY

ost of us take soap and shampoo for granted. Our hands are clean, teeth brushed, and our faces washed. Sadly, for far too many of our neighbors, this is not the case.

Since 1988, those at Shoebox Ministry have made it their sole mission to provide hygiene items to neighbors in need through their network of over 30 nonprofit agencies, all of whom are local to the Greater Phoenix area. These agencies distribute their hygiene kits to their clients who are adults and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence survivors, people in recovery, and others who need, but cannot afford, hygiene items. For many adults, having the opportunity to maintain their personal hygiene means that a homeless individual may have a chance at being offered employment, setting them on a path to become independent and productive members of society once again. For kids, school attendance, academic achievement, positive peer relationships, confidence, a sense of control, and health all increase with good hygiene.

Shoebox Ministry is grateful for the support of our community here in the Valley and would like to leave with four ways to get involved: • You’re invited to Fill the (Shoe)Box on April 3 for a hot breakfast, a little inspiration, and an opportunity to contribute to the good work they are doing now. Find more information, including sponsorship opportunities, at shoeboxministry.org/upcomingevents/breakfast. • Donate new and very gently used purses for their annual Mother’s Day event where they give away purses stocked with beauty products to moms experiencing homelessness and domestic violence survivors. • Have a drawer full of toiletries from traveling? They’d love to take them off your hands! Stop into their office, located at 13645 N. 32nd St in Phoenix, Monday-Friday between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Lee Humes, founder of one of their nonprofit partners, Deep Within, and Shoebox hygiene kits recipient himself over 20 years ago, said “Shoebox Ministry and the personal hygiene items represented a new beginning in my life and my recovery, and gave me a fresh start with increased confidence to continue my life - and my journey.”

• As a nonprofit, they have access to discounted toiletry items and can purchase by the pallet, averaging 3x more hygiene items with every donated dollar. Bonus: your gift qualifies as an Arizona Charitable Tax Credit donation, meaning that up to $400 or $800 of it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state taxes. When you make a donation to Shoebox Ministries, it doesn’t cost you a dime. Questions? Visit shoeboxministry.org/tax-credit

While the government-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds provides money for food, it never allows for the purchase of basic hygiene items. Shoebox fills this gap in our community, helping to alleviate the burden of having to choose or go without.

We know that when everyone has access to the basics, they gain a positive outlook and are able to take the next big steps in their journey of becoming productive and accepted members of our community—and we’d love to have you become a part of ours! Join us at www. shoeboxministry.org

PUTTING AN END TO ROBOCALLS WITH THE TRACED ACT By Congressman David Schweikert

I AM EXCITED TO REPORT CONGRESS HAS FINALLY PASSED THE TELEPHONE ROBOCALL ABUSE CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT AND DETERRENCE (TRACED) ACT, LEGISLATION CREATING STRONGER AND MORE ROBUST POLICY TO COMBAT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS. Now that this legislation has been signed into law, phone companies will be held responsible for verifying calls, and criminals working behind illicit robocalls will be held accountable. Robocalls have become an incessant problem faced by the people of Arizona. These calls are likely telecommunications providers or can entail fraudulent activity. Do not call lists are proving to be ineffective, and I have been working to advocate for increased transparency and higher penalties for unauthorized calls. After introduction, I knew I needed to co-sponsor the TRACED Act because it was strong, bipartisan legislation that would provide a solution from Arizonans. This legislation increases the authority of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand civil penalties of up

to $10,000 dollars for telemarketers who violate legal call restrictions and accommodates the FCC by allowing more time to administer these laws. It also puts legal responsibility on telephone companies to verify incoming phone calls. I am proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to accomplish by working across party lines to pass thoughtful and effective legislation, and I am grateful to have been a part of this effort. To take greater preventive measures, I have included below links to resources for you to use to learn more about what Cox Communications in Arizona is doing and information from the National Do Not Call Registry about how you can stop receiving unwanted calls. If you are a Cox Communications customer, they are providing free access for you to a third-party app called NoMoRoBo. USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER

SET TO OPEN IN FEBRUARY 2020 THE SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY (SRPMIC) IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE PUBLIC OPENING OF THE USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER ON FEBRUARY 22. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River, located at 7455 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale, honors the brave individuals that served aboard the USS Arizona that sank on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It pays tribute to, and recognizes the individuals aboard the ship that day; sharing their stories, their efforts and their sacrifice. The Salt River Indian Community became the recipient of a large part of the superstructure of the USS Arizona (BB-39), identified as the original Boat House, and built the Gardens around it. The Boat House relic was part of the original memorial built at Pearl Harbor in 1951 and is the largest and only piece ever given to a tribal community. “It is a great honor that the land of the O’odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa) will be the final resting place and home to the Boat House relic of the USS Arizona,” said Martin Harvier, President, SRPMIC. “The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River as a whole, will honor the brave soldiers who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and all military veterans who have served our great country.” In 2007, an American flag flown over the USS Arizona Memorial was awarded to the SRPMIC and the

American Legion Bushmaster Post 114. Today, it is kept at the American Legion Bushmaster post with an annual “Breathing of the Flag Ceremony” that takes place during the SRPMIC Pearl Harbor Day event as a fine tribute to all soldiers. The honor of receiving a retired flag started a journey that will forever change the landscape of SRPMIC and Arizona.

SCOTTSDALE PINNACLE PEAK & PIMA

NOW OPEN!

The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River spans the exact length and width of the USS Arizona with over 1,500 commemorative columns, outlining the actual perimeter of the USS Arizona. The project extends across the entry drive of Salt River Fields to the north and juts into the lake on the south. Each column is representative of a life aboard the ship that day. In addition, there are gaps within the column outline representing an individual who survived the attack. As the day ends, each column will subtly glow with light, transforming the memorial at night representing each individual as a light and that their light will continue to go on and stand through the test of time. The Gardens will be open daily from dawn until dusk and is open to the public. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is proud to honor all Veterans and takes pride in sharing the stories of some of those aboard the USS Arizona. The public opening of the Gardens will coincide with Spring Training Opening Day at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, which will also be Veterans Appreciation Day at the Fields.

FINANCIAL

RENEE A. HANSON NAMED CERTIFIED FINANCIAL TRANSITIONIST

W

e are proud to announce that Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, CeFT®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA®, CFS® is now a Certified Financial Transitionist®. Renee A. Hanson has 29 years of experience as a financial advisor and is also a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. Her practice focuses on helping individuals manage their finances while experiencing life transitions, such as divorce, widowhood, and retirement. “As a Certified Financial Transitionist®, I understand human transitions on their deepest levels. I know what influences the way we think and act when our world has suddenly and irrevocably changed,” says Renee. “I’m able to identify when a transition is going well, and I have tools to further enhance the experience. And if a client is struggling with their transition, I know how to keep them safe and help them work through their difficulties.” What is a Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®)? Every person will experience at least one of the following major life transitions, and the likelihood that more than one at a time will be experienced increases with age. • Inheritance • Loss of a parent • Loss of a spouse • Divorce • Major career change • Retirement • The sale of a business • Insurance settlement • Pro sports or entertainer contract Whether they begin with an inheritance, the sale of a business, or both simultaneously, transitions thrust

individuals and families into a position where what was once considered stable is suddenly in flux. Traditional financial planning covers the bases when it comes to important topics such as taxes, investments, cash flow, and estate planning. But that’s only half of the experience of financial change. The other half is the human experience of adapting to change. The Sudden Money Institute (SMI) has spent 19 years studying the psychology, sociology, and neuroscience of change. They’ve even delved into what thought leaders in the business world say about change and adaptation. As important, they know that perceptions and expectations about change are powerful and can profoundly affect thinking and decision-making. The Sudden Money Institute created the Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®) designation to give financial planners and their clients science-based, field-tested tools and protocols designed specifically to merge the personal side and the technical side of financial change. The training and certifying division of SMI, the Financial Transitionist Institute, awards this new designation only after candidates demonstrate fluency with the unique skill set of the CeFT®; deep knowledge of the stages of transition; and skillful use of proprietary materials designed for Financial Transitions Planning. That yearlong-plus process includes mandatory coaching, over 30 hours of coursework, and a Day-Long Certification Exam that tests content, communication, and listening. The result? Professionals who can create solutions that are customized for each client’s unique values, relationships, and vision of the future.

The QCD rule allows IRA owners or those who have inherited an IRA to exempt their required minimum distributions (RMDs) from taxation through direct charitable giving. It’s especially pertinent given recent tighter rules on itemized deductions. Here’s what you need to know to benefit from QCDs. Who qualifies to make QCDs The age requirements for RMDs and QCDs are similar, but not the same. IRA owners become eligible for RMDs any time during the year in which they turn 72 years old. For the QCD rule to be in effect, you must have reached 70½ years of age. It’s a slight distinction that matters when you want to reap the QCD tax benefit in your first year of eligibility. Meeting RMD rules with a QCD RMDs can often be seen an annoyance, especially when you don’t need the money from your IRA. Yet failing to take RMDs is a costly mistake. The IRS imposes heavy fines on taxpayers who skip this annual obligation. If you can get by without taking income from your IRA, you might want to consider doing good with the dollars you are required to withdraw. That’s where the QCD can do double duty. The IRS states, “your qualified charitable distribution can satisfy all or part of the amount of your required minimum distribution from your IRA.”1 Eligible amounts The QCD rule applies to IRA distributions of up to $100,000 annually. The limit applies to the IRA owner and not a household. This means your spouse can also donate up to $100,000 (from his or her own IRA) through a QCD in the same year.

Who can receive QCDs Choose your charity carefully. QCDs only apply to charities granted tax-exempt status by the IRS. This generally includes nonprofit groups such as churches, charities and other 501(c)(3) organizations. When in doubt, visit the IRS online tool to confirm nonprofit status.2 Eligible IRAs You can make a QCD from either a traditional or Roth IRA. However, the tax benefit associated with the QCD rule only applies to owners of traditional IRAs since withdrawals from Roth IRAs are not taxable. Savings held in an employer-sponsored retirement account are not eligible; consider an IRA rollover if you want to take advantage of the QCD rule in the future. Tell your tax preparer It’s important to properly report your QCD at tax time. Under certain circumstances, the IRS may require an extra form. Plan ahead Talk to your financial advisor at or before the beginning of the tax year if you wish to satisfy RMD rules with charitable giving. Consult your tax professional to ensure compliance with both RMD and QCD rules. 1 https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/retirement-plansfaqs-regarding-iras-distributions-withdrawals 2 https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/tax-exemptorganization-search THIS IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT.

Growing up in Somerton, Arizona, Robles remembers her father building additions to their house and working on cars. “My dad was an amazing man, a true craftsman,” she says, “My parents built the house I grew up in…without any experience, my mom learned how to put up drywall and framing. I feel like this is why I love making things with my hands and the feeling of creating makes me happy.” After attending UofA, where she graduated with a BA in graphic design, Robles moved to Phoenix.

Robles admits she loves to lose herself in the process of creating custom one-of-a-kind pieces. “I usually throw my wood scraps onto the floor and start putting a pattern together. There have been times where I step back and feel it’s not the right one. So I start all over again and sometimes it’s something completely different than what I intended it to be at the beginning. My favorite part of it is once I find the design that I believe the client will love, I step back and admire the beautiful pattern. I love to create furniture that is nothing you would find at a typical furniture store. ASK THE IAQ EXPERT

THE AIRPURPROS TEAM ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS

Q: Is indoor air pollution a real thing? A: Yes, indoor air pollution is definitely a real thing. It all started with the 1973 Oil Crisis. Members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries proclaimed an oil embargo. By the end of the embargo, the price of oil had risen nearly 400%. Because of this event, the government-mandated the building industry to build higher energy-efficient homes. Fast forward 47 years, the result is much more energy-efficient homes - but the side effect is a modern health problem that will not be resolved anytime soon. Even though they are trying to balance energy efficiency with circulating outside air into our homes, this does little to correct the problem. In a metropolitan area like ours, we are constantly introducing pollutants from vehicles, manufacturing, and more into our

scottsdalenorthnews.com

homes. Many studies including those by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have found that indoor air pollution could be up to two to five times worse indoors than outside. That same airtight construction that makes for an energy efficient home also reduces ventilation, trapping indoor air pollutants inside your home which could be making you sick.

indoor air quality. The American Heart Association has linked poor air quality to heart problems, while the American Lung Association lists it as a leading cause of lung cancer. Your air conditioner is part of the problem, because it’s dark, damp and hot, causing it to be an ideal place for mold, bacteria, and fungus to grow… the perfect petri dish for microbial growth.

Q: Should I be concerned? A: The average person spends about 90% of their time indoors. This should be a major concern when you consider that the EPA has recognized that poor indoor air pollution is a very real problem and ranked it among the top five environmental dangers facing the public. The amount of children and young adults with severe allergies and asthma continues to climb. This has been linked to increasingly poor

Q: What can I do to improve the Indoor Air Quality in my home? A: First, check your indoor air quality to see if there are any red flags. We have a survey on our website that can help with that. Steps to help reduce indoor air pollution include: • Ensure proper ventilation. The air inside may contain chemicals from a variety of sources including cleaners, hair sprays, cooking, nail polishes, etc.

• Don't smoke in or near the home. • Eliminate odors instead of covering them. • Avoid using aerosolized sanitizing sprays, and Air Fresheners, as most contain compounds with carcinogens. • Dust often and well and avoid using harsh chemicals to clean. • Clean floors regularly. Use tile and wood flooring instead of carpet. • Keep floor mats at every door, or better yet, take your shoes off before you walk inside. • Keep your AC components and ducts clean. • If you use scented candles, make sure the wick is lead-free. • Most importantly, acquire an active purification system that will kill germs at its source. Take our survey at www.airpurpros. com to see if your home is affected by indoor air pollution.

Serving as Cavasson’s first anchor tenant, the new 460,000-squarefoot Nationwide Insurance regional headquarters building will house approximately 2,200 associates with room to grow. The five-story, worldclass facility will allow the company to bring more associates and like business operations together to create efficient and collaborative work environments and align business units in an effort to better serve the needs of both the company’s policyholders and its associates. Nationwide plans to move its associates into the new building in late 2020.

REAL ESTATE REPORT: “THE LACK OF SUPPLY CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS SHOCKING” By Scott Gaertner

T

his month we are having a guest speaker! Each month you hear my opinion on the market and I thought it might be good to give you another view. The thoughts below are that of the man I think of as the “Master of Math” here in the valley, and whom I am pleased to consider a good friend. Mike Orr holds a master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford and is the founder, chief analyst, and editor of the Cromford Report. It is one of my favorite sources of real estate data. Below are Mike's thoughts on the greater Phoenix real estate market: “The lack of supply can only be described as shocking. A 30% decline since this time last year to reach the lowest level since August 2005. This to satisfy a population that has grown more than 20% since 2005. Anyone who thinks this severe shortage will not result in a significant rise in prices is going to have another thought coming pretty soon. The median sales price is already up 11% over the last 12 months

and the average price per square foot is up almost 9% and probably heading for a double-figure appreciation rate.

We note that December 2019 contained 21 working days and December 2018 contained 20, giving 2019 a 5% advantage. However, unit sales were up more than 20% so making an allowance for the advantage still gives 2019 a win by 15%. The listings under contract count is less impressive. While it is almost 20% up from last year, it had been almost 24% up at the start of December, so gave back a little of its lead. Only a little mind you. We are clutching at straws here to find something indicating a little cooling in the market. Demand remains higher than normal but the Cromford® Demand Index has eased from around 107 to around 103 over the past four weeks. This will not make much of a difference while supply remains under half of what is needed for a balanced market. The big hope for buyers must be for a surge in new listings arriving over the next 12 weeks. Perhaps sellers will be tempted by the higher pricing they can achieve. However, if they are staying

around Phoenix, they will have to pay more for their new home too. Phoenix is currently the strongest large-city housing market in the USA, and this is fueled by inter-state population movements. Retirees are a big part of that, but so are people moving here from California and other Western states for work and the lower cost of living. Demand is likely to remain healthy despite the rising prices.

The primary question is whether we will see any change in the meager supply of homes for sale. If this is to take place, it is likely to be visible over the next few weeks. There has been no sign of an improvement in new listing flows in the last several weeks of 2019. But 2020 is a new year, so we will be watching closely for signs of change.” Cromford measures dollar volume on a weekly basis for all areas and types, shown in this latest weekly chart below. On this chart, the lonely dark brown

dot at the left represents the first week of 2020 and has a value of $2,742,696,250. This is the highest dollar volume we have ever measured for the beginning of the year, and it is up a massive 26% from this time last year. Coming second and third are 2018 and 2019 with 2006 in fourth place. The 2020 real estate market shift is important enough that we have decided to have a Housing Forecast event with the top statistics person in the valley on February 27 in Scottsdale North. Rio Verde Country Club

THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE NORTH VALLEY

R

By Molly Cerreta Smith

io Verde Country Club, nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains and abutting the Tonto National Forest, is a hidden golfer’s paradise that is world’s away, yet just minutes from Scottsdale North.

Recently the Rio Verde Country Club completed a $3.75 million renovation that included a refresh and upgrade of the Club and its signature restaurant, to provide an outstanding member experience and to attract new members to discover the Rio Verde experience for themselves. Formerly the Copper Room, the Box Bar Grille features a new kitchen and a stunning layout that offers diners fantastic views of the McDowell Mountains with multiple large windows that seamlessly meld the indoors with the outdoor environment. The ample patio provides table seating for dining as well as cozy and comfortable seating around multiple firepits, ideal for enjoying a meal and a drink before or after golf. According to David Benham, Membership Director, the open air concept of the restaurant provides a whole new experience for members and their guests. Named for the Box Bar Ranch upon which Rio Verde sits today, the Box Bar Grille features traditional country club fare with a core menu of options as well as providing multiple nightly features for the “adventurous palette.” Menu options include hearty fares such as Shepherd’s Pie, Filet Mignon with “voodoo sauce”, Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon with Brussel sprout-Spanish chorizo and Braised Short Rib Stroganoff.

While the clubhouse remodel certainly deserves attention, the golf courses are the highlight of Rio Verde. With 36-holes of traditional-style golf, Quail Run and White Wing courses offer a challenging yet enjoyable golf experience for players of all levels. “Both are very walkable courses that are no longer built today,” says Darryl Janisse, Director of Golf. Redesigned by PGA pro Tom Lehman during a $6 million course renovation project just under a decade ago, each course offers distinct features so that members have an array of options when they play. Quail Run offers more elements of a traditional style golf course while White Wing is more comparable to a links-style course. Though nestled in a desert setting with spectacular mountain views, each course offers excellently maintained tees, fairways and greens. The property itself pays homage to its desert environment and is respectful to both the land and wildlife here. Rio Verde is certified by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an environmental education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment, preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf, and gain recognition for their efforts. According to Audubon International, “The ACSP assists each golf course member to take stock of its environmental resources and any potential liabilities, and then develop a plan that fits its unique setting, goals, staff, budget, and time. Audubon International provides information to help golf course personnel with six key environmental components: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, water quality management, outreach and education.” Certification is awarded to golf courses that meet these specific environmental management standards in each area, and Rio Verde Country Club is proud to be among them. “Yes, we have natural Arizona scottsdalenorthnews.com

wildlife, but we live in harmony with them,” adds Janisse.

While many of the 410 Country Club members are also residents, the Club community does not differentiate. In fact, one of the most notable features of the Country Club environment is the welcoming sense of connectivity that takes place here. Tonie Lindenberger, Marketing Committee Member of the Club, notes that it is very easy to get involved and to meet new people here. “The number one reason people join our club is the sense of community,” she says, adding, “People often comment on the old-fashioned neighborhood feel. No one is a stranger here.” The community itself has just more than 1,000 lots and offers a number of vibrant reasons outside of golf to get involved, including the Community Center with pool tables, pickleball and tennis courts, bocce ball, a wellstocked library, and even a dance studio.

and clubs to choose from, standing out from the crowd is what Rio Verde is all about. “We give people a reason to see what we’re all about,” says Benham. Another benefit is that Rio Verde includes trail fees and cart fees for its members. Perhaps a hidden gem for many years, Rio Verde Country Club has dedicated millions in renovations to ensure

that they are offering their members the very best experience around — especially on the course. So while its perhaps a local secret for now, the word is out.. and spreading. For more about Rio Verde Country Club, the types of memberships available and additional amenities, visit www.rioverdearizona.com/thecountry-club.

The community hosts fun events including comedy nights, high-end wine dinners, jazz nights, game show themed activities and more. There are also numerous clubs for people to join including those that enjoy horses, Jeeps, hiking, biking and so on. “We’re an extremely active community.” And first and foremost, Rio Verde is a golf community. Among the golfers, there are women’s groups, men’s groups and players of all skill levels so no one ever feels as though they have to go at it alone. The Club also employs professional certified PGA instructors for private and group lessons. “We have our own teachers, our own clinics and our own fitters,” adds Benham. “We have a wide range of golfers when it comes to skill levels. Whether you carry a 2 or a 40 handicap, all golfers have a place at Rio Verde Country Club.” Rio Verde Country Club is focused on providing its members, whether residents or not, with an unparalleled golf experience that is unmatched in the Valley. KIDS’ CORNER

Kids & Golf IN ARIZONA I

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

t’s February, which in Arizona means prime golf season. Ranked as the second “golfiest” state in the union by Golf Magazine (only Florida ranks higher), our state hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and is home to seven of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses. Our stunning desert and mountain views serve as a backdrop to a world class golf experience, and we can’t think of a better location to introduce the game of golf to your youngsters. There are many kid-friendly golfing facilities, camps, and training resources available in the Valley of the Sun.

any sport is to have fun. Golf is no exception. When you take your kids out to the course, rather than focusing on developing the proper swing and learning the fundamentals right away, let them enjoy just whacking the ball around and being creative. Experts recommend that adults focus on having fun with golf initially, rather than trying to develop a great swing or technical ability, so that your kids will be more likely to want to go to the course with you again. Playing frequently is the biggest key to developing a golfer; learning proper technique will come as you child’s excitement for playing golf grows.

Here are a few tips for getting your kids started on the right foot when you introduce them to golf.

It’s also a good idea to start with the short game when you’re getting kids interested in golf. It can be hard for small children to get a golf ball into the air, but almost anyone can putt. Take your kids to play mini-golf, or to the driving range to practice and learn about the game. Also, take time to teach them about golfing rules and etiquette while you play, and emphasize that this is a fun activity – there should be no pressure, even if they can’t hit the ball very well.

TEACHING THE GAME AND KEEPING IT FUN The most important thing to remember when teaching kids how to play

16 • February 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Before you head out, be sure that you are prepared for your time out on the course. Wear sunscreen, hats, and the proper attire required by the course you plan to play on, and plan ahead for water, weather, and snacks. One of the most important things to think about is kidsized equipment. Many experts say that a putter is the best choice as a kid’s first club, then a 9-iron training club because it is fun and easy for kids to hit the ball in the air off of a tee. The weight and length of clubs makes a difference in a youngster’s ability to swing the club, so take time to visit a local golf store or pro shop to make sure your child’s clubs fit properly as they grow and develop. But a word of advice: golf equipment can be very expensive, so save your money until you know that golf is a good fit for your kid. Many instructors and courses have loaner equipment that your child can use until they start getting excited about playing on a regular basis.

KIDS GOLF RESOURCES There are hundreds of golf courses here in the valley, so do some research before you go to make sure that the course you want to play is kid friendly. Find out the course policies and costs of tee times, equipment rentals, and dress code so you can prepare ahead of time. The brothers’ dark comedy and panic attack-esque filmmaking style also shines here in scenes that can make you laugh at even the most horrifying of moments. Bolstered by Daniel Lopatin’s score and a colorful supporting cast, you’ve got an experience that feels like the lost Martin ScorseseRobert De Niro collaboration. While this film likely won’t be for everyone, I highly recommend it.

6 UNDERGROUND

This is Michael Bay without limits and that’s not necessarily good. Imagine his immature humor, over the top action and frantic editing…and then multiply it by 10. Now imagine one-dimensional characters, lazy continuity errors, obnoxious comedy and exploitation of some serious real-world horrors. None of the actors, despite being highly talented, bring anything to the table and Bay confirms that the charm of his insane style wears off after an opening 10-minute car chase scene. At least he avoids exceeding a 2hr and 15 minutes run time.

THE GRUDGE

The most disappointing films are the ones that feel like they waste all of their good qualities. Taking the anthology format of Grudge in a new direction with an R-rating, an interesting director like Nicolas Pesce and a great cast seems like a perfect idea. Unfortunately for the viewers, somewhere something went horribly wrong. There are no characters here, only archetypes (the haunted cops, the soon-to-be parents, etc.) The horror consists of nothing more than jump scares. Overall, the movie doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. The worst part was that somehow, in a series where there was always a sense of dread, grief or trauma, the film continuously pulls punches leaving it flat and almost comedic. While it’s still early in the year, I believe this will be one of 2020’s most underwhelming films.

1917

Like a horror film, 1917 makes each moment feel like the difference between life and death. The long takes aren’t there just for the sake of showing off, but for Director Sam Mendes and DP Roger Deakins to place you in the shoes of the characters. This film mirrors real life with sudden, pivotal moments that change the course of everything, and everyone effected. The actors mesh perfectly in their roles - particularly the decision to give the minor/ supporting roles to major actors, portraying a sense of importance without taking away from the leads. The production design and looks are also incredible. My favorite nightmare is the detail given to No Man’s Land. As a whole, 1917 was an intense, emotional experience.

GETAWAY

Arizona's West Coast

GETAWAY TO WESTERN ARIZONA LAKE HAVASU

W

ay out west, along the Colorado River, the “west coast” of Arizona stretches from north of Hoover Dam to just south of Yuma and the border of Mexico. Although the summers can be even hotter than Phoenix, winter is a great time of year to visit, and the Colorado River and Lake Havasu provide a cool getaway for every water enthusiast all year round. Here are a few places we recommend you check out when you head for Western Arizona. LAKE MEAD AND THE HOOVER DAM Built in 1936, the Hoover Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country today and provides hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. One of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, the immense dam spans the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, creating Lake Mead along the Colorado River. Visitors can see the dam up close by driving down a winding road into the canyon and parking to take a tour of the historic art deco structure. The byproduct of this fantastic feat of engineering is 700 miles of Lake Mead shoreline, an attraction for water and outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all kinds. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was the nations first designated recreation area, providing 1.5 million acres of preserved recreational space

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier across mountains, canyons, valleys, wilderness areas, and two lakes, Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. ROUTE 66 AND GRAND CANYON WEST A bit further south as you head down I-40, you find many areas of the highway that run right along the historic Route 66, including Kingman, considered to be the heart of Route 66. Tiny towns a little east of Kingman also give you a taste of the historic Route 66, like Peach Springs or Seligman, the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Reservation and is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West has two main locations: The West Rim, which is accessible from State Route 93 on the way to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, is the site of the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon. The second location is Peach Springs, located along a well-preserved stretch of the historic Route 66 and is the gateway to beautiful Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon. LAKE HAVASU Further down the Colorado River on Arizona’s border, along Highway 95, you will find the world-famous London Bridge, now a permanent resident of Lake Havasu City. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River border of California

and Arizona, this area attracts visitors with its 50 miles of pristine lake and river waterways, laid-back community, and ideal climate for people who love the water and outdoors. Lake Havasu is also home to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and many undeveloped wilderness areas along the Colorado River. YUMA About two hours south of Lake Havasu and Parker, you’ll find Yuma, a frequent stopping point for travelers between Phoenix and San Diego. As one of the easiest spots to cross the Colorado River, Yuma developed a unique and exciting history in the Old West Arizona Territory. Visitors can also enjoy the cool waters of the river nestled in the mountainous Sonoran Desert, play in the sand dunes, and visit many historic sites throughout the city. Whether you visit the famed Yuma Territorial Prison or the Colorado River State Historic Park, you’ll enjoy a visit to the southernmost point on Arizona’s West Coast. Western Arizona is a great place to visit this time of year, when desert temperatures are mild and sunny. The cool Colorado River provides outdoor adventures, rich history, and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each area, and be sure to check LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! scottsdalenorthnews.com

Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small cups as suction devices that are placed on the skin to disperse and break up stagnation and congestion by pulling blood closer to the surface. As blood flow increases to the area, the muscle fascia and connective tissue loosen. Cupping therapy has been used for back and neck pain, migraines, muscle recovery and tissue relaxation. There are two forms of cupping; wet and dry. In dry cupping, the therapist will simply place the suction cups on the skin. In wet cupping, the practitioner will make a small incision on the skin and then apply the suction cup to draw out small amounts of blood. In our office, we only perform dry cupping. Cupping treatment is very similar to how a deep tissue massage reduces pain. However, cupping is the opposite of massage– rather than applying pressure into the muscles, it uses negative pressure to pull them upward. The suction in the cups causes the skin and

superficial muscle layer to be drawn into the cup. Once suction has occurred, the cups can be moved across the skin in a gliding motion using massage oil or lotion. Most patients find this pressure to be particularly relaxing and relieving. The cups are generally left in place for about 10-15 minutes while the patient relaxes. Cupping therapy might cause bruising and soreness, which is temporary. The bruising side effects depend on the severity of blood stagnation in the area the cups are placed. The bruising or redness is just from the dilating of the red blood cells - there is no cell damage occurring. During the treatment, some discomfort from the suction is normal. However the elimination of the toxins in the tissue does give the patient some immediate relief. To inquire more regarding cupping treatment or other treatment options at our clinic, please call our office at 480470-0133. Dr. Beau Horner is a licensed Chiropractor. He provides patient-specific treatment plans that incorporate the use of chiropractic, physical therapy techniques, soft-tissue therapies, nutritional and ergonomic counseling, and home exercises to provide the most time-efficient and effective plan to treat patients with a variety of conditions. 4 EASY STRENGTH TRAINING EXERCISES

TO HELP WITH EVERYDAY MOBILITY By Erin Mahoney, VP of Education at ISSA

T

he human body is a complex mechanism, where muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments all work together as one. The more effective the components of the body are, the better movement in activities of daily living, which can lead to a better quality of life.

Q: What Are the Best Functional Strength Training Exercises? A: There are countless functional strength exercises we can perform to improve our health and wellbeing. The following four exercises focus on strengthening common muscles used in daily life. 1. Good Morning – This is a great exercise demonstrating a hip hinge movement pattern. When you lean over to pick something off the ground, you are performing this same movement. Good mornings help provide resistance for the hamstrings to avoid unnecessary lower back stress. No weights necessary. scottsdalenorthnews.com

TM

Why do so many people trust Wellphora as their source for CBD? It comes down to 3 important reasons: 3rd-party lab tested. All of our products are lab tested to ensure both safety and effectiveness. All organic ingredients. We use only the highest-quality USA, organically grown and processed ingredients. Locally produced. All of our A D E I products are manufactured right here in Arizona.

2. Dumbbell Reverse Lunge with Rotation – This can improve getting in and out of a car by improving rotational core strength. This can be done with one or two weights. 3. Single-Leg Dumbbell Row – This is great for balance and stability, relating to picking something up off the ground. This exercise will also strengthen the back musculature for all pulling movement patterns, such as pulling a door open. This can be done without weights or with a light handheld weight. 4. Farmers Carry – This is a great exercise for improving grip strength, but also posture. Posture is vital to optimal health, strength, and fitness. Considering all the sitting and standing we do at work all day, spine health should be at the forefront of our minds. If we properly strengthen

the right muscle groups, then there should be no need to think about sitting up straight all the time. This can be done with two heavy handheld weights or one heavier handheld weight, one side at a time (be sure to do both sides to stay even). One side at a time will also help strengthen your core. Whether a you are a seasoned-gym goer or just starting your fitness journey, functional training is an important component to add into your daily routine. Get started by practicing these four movements, with 10 to 12 repetitions, three times. Erin Mahoney is the VP of Education at International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), a global leader and pioneer in the personal training certification industry. For more info visit issaonline.com.

N

Functional training improves coordination, balance, and body awareness and reduces risk of injury. As range of motion is enhanced, day-to-day activities become easier. Functional strength training is important in general, and even more so as a we grow older.

for making Wellphora your go-to CBD source.

M

Q: What Does Functional Strength Training Mean? A: The goal of a functional strength training is to practice physical activity that translates to actions we do every day. These movements include being able to get out of bed, standing from a seated position, opening the refrigerator door, or reaching for a glass from the kitchen cabinet. In exercise terms, we use different movement patterns such as pulling, pushing, squatting, hinging, pressing, and lunging every day.

Have you given up on cleaning your house, and would like to see it emerge from under the dirt again? We’re there for you. Looking for a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or yearly service that you can trust? Our staff is prompt, courteous, and friendly. We understand what it takes to keep your home thoroughly clean. LOOK NO FURTHER THAN JOHNSON’S CLEANING THE ONLY SERVICE YOU WILL NEED TO STAY DIRTFREE AND SATISFIED!

MAKING CONNECTIONS New to a networking event? Don’t be shy – jump right in! At one point or another, everyone there was a newcomer, so don’t hesitate to approach new people, introduce yourself and ask them about their business/company and what brings them to the event. This is the easiest way to start getting the most out of the event and start connecting with new people. SENSE OF COMMUNITY Joining a group of like-minded people can not only help people make connections, but it can also build a sense of community. Businesses in the same neighborhood or in the same industry can really benefit from building a community that supports one another. EXPANDING YOUR REACH Networking is also beneficial for helping people expand their circle and reach new people they might not have otherwise met or done business with. For those that are new to the area, starting with a new company, opening a new business or wanting to expand their businesses, networking allows the perfect opportunity to meet new people and get connected with other businesses. SHARING NEW IDEAS Whether or not people in the network-

ing group are in the same industry, they can share ideas, bounce thoughts off one another and help create new and different solutions to the “same old” challenges. Getting a diverse range of opinions, advice or support on a topic is one of the greatest benefits of being part of a networking group. GAINING REFERRALS Some of the best advertising one can get is the referral of a friend, colleague or business associate. By expanding their reach and making new connections, businesses can truly benefit from great a great resource of referrals. ADVANCING YOUR CAREER Networking isn’t just for business owners and top-level execs. There are benefits to networking if you’re looking for a new job, looking to gain more experience or find a mentor, or if you’re looking to move up the ladder. INCREASING YOUR PROFILE Those that are part of the regular networking scene are the ones that people begin to recognize and see as a source of knowledge and advice. When you’re looking to become a part of a community, this is an extremely powerful tool.

Networking events allow you an opportunity to get out there, make yourself more visible, and introduce yourself and your company to a whole new group of people. There are so many ways that individuals and businesses as a whole can benefit from taking the time to network. It’s usually a social environment, so don’t stress too much about trying to get a hard sales pitch in right then and there. Focus on making genuine connections first, and the rest will come.
