The Scottsdale restaurant, located at 7361 E. Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, is the privately-owned company’s first in the western United States. Each Cooper’s Hawk location offers wine tasting, a wine club, a shop with wines and accessories, and an expansive eating area suitable for both leisurely dining and business meetings. The menu features dishes that pair naturally with Cooper’s Hawk wines. Wines are made at the company’s main winery in Illinois and then aged and served at locations onsite. While wellestablished throughout the Midwest, Cooper’s Hawk also has locations from Michigan to Florida, along the East Coast. Founder Tim McEnery opened the first winery and full restaurant in Orland Park, Ill., in 2005. This year marks the privately held company’s sixteenth anniversary. Arizona DPS to Enforce Distracted Driving Law By Sergeant Kameron Lee, Arizona Department of Public Safety NINETY FOUR PERCENT OF CRASHES THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (ARIZONA DPS) INVESTIGATES ARE DUE TO DRIVER ERROR, MEANING 94% OF THE CRASHES ARE COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE. Distraction remains a common theme in many of the crashes we respond to. Beginning this month, Arizona DPS will enforce the law signed last year that says it is “Illegal in Arizona to talk or text on a cellphone while driving unless the device is in a hands-free mode.” This law prohibits drivers from using a cellphone or a stand-alone electronic device while driving unless it is being used in a handsfree mode. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, tablets, music and gaming
devices. A “stand-alone electronic device” is a portable device other than a portable wireless communication device that stores audio or video data files to be retrieved on demand by a user. We want people to think of the consequences of distracted driving now, not after a crash has happened. If someone is hurt, or worse, loses their life because you chose to look at a text, scroll social media or even looked down to follow the GPS on your phone, the consequences can be life altering and life changing. The hardest part of a trooper’s job is knocking on the door of a home and telling the people living there that their family member isn’t coming home. We

are asking for voluntary compliance of the hands-free law. In our day and age, we have the technology that allows us to safely operate our vehicles without phones or other electronics in our hands. That one text or that one phone call isn’t worth it. This is more than a text and driving ban. You cannot hold your phone or any portable electronic communication device in your hand while driving–you don’t have to be texting to be in violation.
WHAT YOU CANNOT DO: 1. Holding your phone to make or answer a call (except a 9-1-1 call). 2. Read or send text messages, emails, etc. 3. Hold/support the device with your body. Learn more at azdps.gov/handsfree.
THREE INSTANCES WHERE YOU CAN USE YOUR PHONE INCLUDE: 1. Using GPS navigation while the phone is docked. 2. Talking on the phone via Bluetooth or other hands-free devices. 3. Calling 9-1-1. myhyperlocalnews.com
City News The Arizona Fine Art EXPO to Take Place with COVID-19 Safety Precautions WILLIAM DAGGETT’S SCULPTURES START IN A PLACE MANY MAY NOT EXPECT – THE FORESTS OF NORTHERN ARIZONA AND SOUTHERN UTAH. Each year, Daggett takes several days and hikes many miles in search of the perfect juniper branches to transform into beautiful, moving sculptures. Local residents can see Daggett work his magic on the juniper limbs during the Arizona Fine Art EXPO, taking place from Friday, Jan. 15 – Sunday, March 28 under the “festive white tents” at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road. The Arizona Fine Art EXPO, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, features 120 patron-friendly artist studios in a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their journey, inspiration and techniques. Throughout the 10-week event, patrons can enjoy watching artisans sketch in rapiograph, pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; chisel, carve and shape stone; scratch and etch on porcelain and clay board, and saw and carve wood sculptures. Artists will also paint in all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; design and create jewelry; and assemble mosaics. Art is for sale during the event and commissions are welcomed. WILLIAM DAGGETT A developer by trade, Daggett has spent his career working on commercial, residential and custom home projects. He’s always enjoyed creating new things and has tried his hand at stained glass, furniture building and jewelry design. He found his true passion 15 years ago when he began carving wood. “I started with a chainsaw, caving bears and eagles. It wasn’t rewarding enough so I moved on to cottonwood
bark carving,” says Daggett. “Then I discovered a twisted piece of juniper while walking our dog in Utah. I’ve been hooked ever since.” Daggett backpacks out interesting limbs from dead trees during his forest searches. In a typical three-day trip, he’ll see thousands of trees and come home with fewer than 20 pieces of wood for his sculptures.

After he returns home, Daggett takes time to decide with his wife what each piece of wood should become. Once he has a vision for the piece, he uses both hand and high-speed tools to create the shape he’s looking for. He then begins the painstaking process of sanding the piece, working his way through five different grits of sandpaper and finishing with hand rubbed Danish oil. A finished piece can take Daggett anywhere from a 40hour week to several months to complete. COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS EXPO organizers are working closely with city officials to ensure the safety of this year’s artists, staff and visitors. The event will follow all Centers for Disease Control recommendations, including requiring masks and social distancing for all patrons and artists in attendance. Artists will receive daily temperature checks and each studio will have hand sanitizer available for patron use. The annual event is one of Arizona’s premier venues for collecting fine art. Season passes cost $10; season passes for seniors and military are $8; and children under 12 are free. Parking is free. For more details about the event or participating artists, call 480-837-7163 or visit ArizonaFineArtEXPO.com.

City News A Local Church Helps to Bridge the Digital Divide Information Courtesy of Scottsdale Bible Church TODAY, MOST STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO USE TECHNOLOGY AT HOME, BUT MILLIONS DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO COMPUTERS OR INTERNET AND RISK FALLING BEHIND IN THEIR EDUCATION. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic put a spotlight on this crisis known as the Digital Divide, revealing the millions of K-12 students who are unable to navigate distance learning. These children face long-term social, academic, emotional and economic challenges as a result. Thirty percent of Arizona students lack high-speed internet access and 20% do not have access to
appropriate devices. These inequities in education have been exacerbated by COVID-19, creating an urgent need to give kids equal access to technology for remote learning. In our state alone, thousands of kids have vanished from the school system because their teachers cannot contact them remotely. Together with the City of Phoenix and School Connect, a local nonprofit, Scottsdale Bible Church (SBC) wants to help close the digital divide in Phoenix by providing 9,640 laptops. The plan is to: • Raise $1 million to purchase 5,265 laptops at $190 each for students in every City of Phoenix school district that reported a need. These districts will
check out laptops to students so they can do homework and participate in distance learning as needed. • The City of Phoenix will purchase the additional 4,375 laptops needed in these districts using CARES Act funding. • SBC and the City of Phoenix will reach out to businesses to help provide high-speed internet service for kids in these districts. To learn more, and to donate, visit scottsdalebible. com/events/bridging-the-digital-divide. Have questions? Contact Shannon Cox at scox@ scottsdalebible.com or 480-824-7243.
Holland Center Hosts 6th Annual Arizona Sage Art Market ON JANUARY 30 FROM 10 A.M. TO 4 P.M., THE HOLLAND CENTER, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO ENHANCING ARTS, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY IN THE DESERT FOOTHILLS REGION, WILL HOST THE 6TH ANNUAL ARIZONA SAGE ART MARKET. Attendees will be able to purchase works of art from a variety of mediums, including painting, jewelry, glass art and more, while meeting the 30 juried artists participating and learning more about their creative processes. Admission is free to the Market, which will take place both indoors and outdoors to allow plenty of room for social distancing. Fifteen percent of the proceeds will go to The Holland Center to support their programming.
By allowing attendees to make a personal connection with the artists, the Arizona Sage Art Market offers a distinctive experience reminiscent of shopping on the Main Street of a small town, in the days before the internet and big box stores were the vendors of choice. The artists who participate are passionate about showcasing their art, explaining their creative processes, and getting to know their customers. When people shop at the Arizona Sage Art Market, they are not just buying an inanimate work of art — they are gaining insight into the consciousness of the artist while enjoying a friendly, intimate, unhurried shopping experience.
The Holland Center is located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. Formerly known as the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF), the Holland Center has been striving to enhance quality of life in the Desert Foothills region since 1986. As part of this mission, the Center offers a diverse array of programs, including Lifelong Learning classes, fine arts exhibits, and performing arts through the Desert Foothills Theater. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Holland Center does not receive any funding from government entities and relies exclusively on the generosity of donors. A Message from CCUSD’s New Superintendent with a great team of educators and professionals who serve our students in CCUSD is exciting. As superintendent, I express my commitment to begin the work by engaging and listening to stakeholders so that we can continue the many great things already going on and collaborate on how we can continue to improve. I look forward to visiting schools to connect with our administrators, teachers, staff, and students, meeting with our parents and community groups, and becoming a member of the CCUSD family. Together, we will continue to Inspire Excellence within Cave Creek and build upon its success moving into the future.

In addition, we wish Dr. Debbi Burdick a happy retirement and thank her for all of her efforts over the many years she served in helping to achieve the level of excellence that exists in CCUSD for both students and families. Neighbors Help Neighbors with Scottsdale’s Brown Bag Program By Jan Horne THE DARK, CALM EARLY THURSDAY MORNING IS A STARK CONTRAST TO THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE TAKING PLACE INSIDE THE BRIGHTLY LIT CITY OF SCOTTSDALE GRANITE REEF SENIOR CENTER. Human Services Representative Kevin Herrick is helping Desert Mission and St. Mary’s Food Bank unload delivered food targeted for the city’s Brown Bag Program. He safely works alongside a handful of other staff to put together care packages for our most vulnerable residents: homebound, disabled and lowincome seniors. The senior centers’ Brown Bag Program supplies protein, bread, fruits and vegetables to 240 eligible residents the first and third Thursday of each month. Each bag contains about 15 pounds of food valued at $25.50. The program has been in existence for 20 years.
Resident Helen Hawkins has been receiving bags for three years. She’s grateful for the food and says, “There’s always plenty, including fresh fruits and vegetables that I don’t always have easy access to.” Besides being a recipient, Helen also volunteers by delivering Brown Bags to other people who live in her retirement building. HOW SCOTTSDALE FUNDS THE PROGRAM The nonprofit Scottsdale Community Partners contributes significantly to this program, providing funding for the food purchases and delivery requirements. Now, the CARES Act also is providing dollars to ensure the program continues seamlessly during COVID-19. The city received $29 million in CARES Act funding and has allocated the money to two funding priorities: Community Investment and City Operations. About $3 million is helping care for our most vulnerable citizens through services such
as the Brown Bag Program, employment training, and the recent Adopt-a-Family holiday donation program.
or make monetary contributions. Learn more at scottsdalecommunitypartners. org/program/brown-bag.

Waste Not Launches Free App to Connect Donors with Nonprofits Feeding the Hungry WASTE NOT, A 501(C) 3 NONPROFIT AGENCY THAT RESCUES PERISHABLE FOODS BEFORE IT GOES TO WASTE AND DELIVERS IT TO THOSE IN NEED, HAS LAUNCHED THE MEALCONNECT APP, A FREE AND EASY WAY TO DELIVER EXCESS FOOD PRODUCTS TO NONPROFITS HELPING FEED THE HUNGRY. After a successful and well-received soft launch last spring just as the coronavirus pandemic took hold, MealConnect “is easy to use and requires no obligation from the user, only that they use it when they have surplus food,” says Hillary Bryant, community engagement manager at Waste Not. “MealConnect users don’t need to donate a lot of food to be part of the effort because every donation, no matter how big or small, has an impact. And,
with the intensifying impact of the pandemic, the need for food items also is growing.” Users of the app are immediately connected with nonprofits in their community and local volunteer drivers who deliver the food. “The process of donating meals through MealConnect is seamless and very user-friendly,” says Samantha Liotta, a sports dietician for Sun Devil Athletics. Liotta and her team create balanced, nutritious meals for ASU student athletes. “It makes the process so easy and we have recommended it to others to use. It feels good knowing our excess nutritious meals are being donated to those who need and appreciate them. All the volunteers have been kind and great to work with as well.” The app has significant benefits for the community and for donors: • Nonprofit agencies, including homeless shelters, transitional housing, senior facilities, preschools and after-school programs, rehabilitation centers and food pantries receive food with no cost for distribution to individuals and families. • Food businesses reduce waste costs, generate tax savings and help those in need. • The food donation system addresses food insecurity in a state where one in four children go to bed hungry every night and one in five adults lack consistent access to adequate food.

“Our goal is to add to our base of more than 70 generous local food businesses, including restaurants, catering companies, resorts, grocery stores and event venues that consistently donate excess perishable food that would otherwise go to waste,” Bryant says. “Expanding our base means that we can provide food to more people in more communities across the Valley.” Nationally, more than $218 billion is spent on food every year that is never eaten. Waste Not provides nearly 3.5 million meals a year through donations. In 2019, Waste Not diverted 963 tons of food from landfills, a total value of more than $2.2 million. Among the more than 70 agencies served by Waste Not are A New Leaf, Arizona Center for the Blind, Arizona Housing, Inc., Arizona Retirement Home, Boys & Girls club of Metro Phoenix, Homeward Bound, Hope Women’s Center, Joshua Tree Feeding Program, Maggie’s Place, New Dimension in Recovery, Salvation Army, UMOM New Day Centers, Veterans for Veterans and West Valley Community Food Pantry (The Way). Community Sam Baker Inspires Kids Through His Second Children’s Book
E
verybody could use some joy and a reminder that we are all connected. Scottsdale author Sam Baker promotes this through his children’s books. Baker is a 98-year-old former Marine who served in World War ll. Today, his passion is creating stories that bring the joy of reading and imagination to children of all ages. Oscar the Mouse is Baker’s second work in as many years. His first, The Silly Adventures of Petunia and Herman the Worm, is an award-winning chapter book about unconditional love. Oscar the Mouse is a timely picture book with a message about inclusivity and the joy of finding a new friend. As a result, both find more love and laughter in their lives.
Baker wants children and adults alike to learn how to imagine the world as a better place - a place filled with love, harmony, hope, and joy. “If you can imagine it, you can create it,” he says. This fun and entertaining experience gives all of us a chance to escape the stress of everyday life and be appreciated by others. Baker was raised in an inclusive household. His father emigrated from Lithuania in the early 1890s where he experienced the wrath of antisemitism.
Upon arriving in America, he vowed to treat everyone with respect and kindness. “Everyone was equal. This is how both of my parents raised me and our family in Clarksdale, Mississippi during the height of the depression.” To help children stay positive during the pandemic, and because reading is the foundation of all learning, Baker will be reading from his books and posting the videos on Facebook (search for Oscar The Mouse) and Instagram (@author_ sambaker). “My goal is to create a creative community where kids share their artwork and ideas so we emerge from this pandemic stronger as a community,” he says. To kick off this idea, Baker will be giving away his books, stickers, and other prizes to children who post drawings of anything they love or by coloring his free coloring pages and posting them on his Facebook pages – Oscar the Mouse or The Silly Adventures of Petunia and Herman the Worm – by January 20. The images that get the most likes will win prizes as will the drawings that are voted most original. To obtain the free coloring pages and learn more, visit his website at SamBakerBooks.com.

investment strategy that aligns with your values, goals, and risk tolerance. As you rebalance your portfolio this bucket provides the opportunity to replenish at more opportunistic times. Cash reserve bucket one should be managed with short-term cash and cash alternatives such as savings, money markets, and certificates. This allows for liquidity. Liquidity is the ability to access funds with little to no principal reduction. In other words, it doesn’t matter when you need it, the value is about what you invested. Marketability is the ability to access your funds, but the balance may have changed with market conditions. Cash reserve bucket two may hold short-term bond funds, structured notes, and certificates. This allows for ease of access and reduces the exposure to penalties or redemption costs. A laddered maturity approach for your holdings could provide intermittent access without penalties should a rebalance of your portfolio not create the opportunity to replenish your reserves. Bucket number one is your traditional three to six months of household expenses. These classic reserves help you avoid going to the credit reservoir when unexpected expenses arise. And, if you haven’t noticed, things seem to happen in threes. Just as soon as you have a flat tire, the water heater goes out and the cat needs to go to the vet. The second bucket is the one that helps maintain the integrity of your portfolio. This bucket holds your monthly paycheck if you no longer draw one from employment. It should hold up to three years of your annual “income” needs. Your income need is twelve months of expenses. WILD ANIMAL RESCUE IN ARIZONA By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
O
ne of the many reasons we love living in the Sonoran Desert is that it is home to an abundance of wildlife. Coyotes and their kits roam freely across the desert behind our home, while hawks, owls, and falcons soar above the mountains throughout the metro area. We have frequent visits from hummingbirds and bats, with the occasional Javelina scavenging for food down the block. But living in such close quarters with wild animals can take its toll on both humans and wildlife. As the Phoenix metro area has grown over the years, our love of wildlife in the Valley has given rise to some fantastic nonprofit animal sanctuaries and rescue facilities. Many of these facilities are open to the public and are a great way to get your kids interested in science and
nature. If you and your family need help with a wild animal rescue or want to lend your support to helping these efforts, take a look at these local organizations.
SOUTHWEST WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER southwestwildlife.org One of the leading wildlife sanctuaries in the southwestern United States can be found in northeast Scottsdale, just north of McDowell Mountain Regional Park. The Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWCC) is a nonprofit organization that has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of wild animals for more than 25 years. The main goal of SWCC is to release the animals back into the wild. However, their accredited sanctuary also provides a home for those animals that cannot be released. The SWCC facility is open to the public 365 days a year to provide education and help inspire people to learn about and respect native wildlife and conserve its habitat. The sanctuary is home to native wildlife from around the southwest and is proud to offer space at their sanctuary to care for part of the captive Mexican Wolf population as a member of the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP). PHOENIX HERPETOLOGICAL SANCTUARY phoenixherp.com The Phoenix Herpetological Society (PHS) is one of the premier reptile sanctuaries in the country. This North Scottsdale based organization and its research facility works with private citizens, rescue organizations, and state and federal wildlife officials and law enforcement to house and care for rescued, unwanted, or seized reptiles from across the United States. Most of the hundreds of animals at the sanctuary were abandoned, abused, or confiscated from individuals who possessed them illegally. PHS was started almost 20 years ago to provide a refuge for unwanted or rescued reptiles around the state due to a lack of specific knowledge and understanding of the special care and housing required for reptiles by other rescue agencies. The organization believes that conservation begins with education and their volunteers spend countless hours visiting schools and educational locations around the Valley to educate the public about reptiles and how important they are to our ecosystem. The facility is

open by appointment only, but they do host birthday parties, lead field trips, and conduct classroom programs, professional development workshops, and venomous snake training courses for the public.
WILD AT HEART wildatheartraptors.org Wild At Heart in Cave Creek is a rescue, rehabilitation, and release center specifically for raptors and birds of prey. This organization focuses on rehabilitating and rescuing injured owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles with a goal to release them back into the wild. Wild At Heart also works to relocate displaced burrowing owls, manage species recovery programs and habitat enhancement projects, and provide educational presentations to schools and other organizations. This facility is open to the general public by special appointment only, but they do provide educational presentations upon request. LIBERTY WILDLIFE libertywildlife.org Liberty Wildlife, located in the heart of downtown Phoenix just south of Sky Harbor Airport, has been helping Arizona rehabilitate and release thousands of wild animals every year for almost 40 years. The organization cares for between 7,000 and 8,000 animals every year and has a release rate of over 50%, well above the national average. You can find animals that they were not able to be rereleased in many zoos, nature centers, and breeding facilities as wildlife ambassadors for conservation around the state. As strong believers in educating the public, especially children, Liberty Wildlife provides world class educational programs with trained wildlife handlers and teachers using well-conditioned educational raptors who have been deemed non-releasable. The organization provides hundreds of programs each year for the public in a variety of settings. They also host field trips, summer camp, activities for kids, and a special program for Eagle Scouts. These are just a few of the many nonprofit organizations in the Valley of the Sun that rescue injured and displaced wildlife in Arizona. Visit Ladybug’s Blog at ladybugsblog.com for more information about wildlife and other animal sightings in our state.

Family The Free January 16 Itty Bitty Open Introduces The Littlest of Golfers to the Sport
I
n its thirty third year, the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) will host the 2021 Itty Bitty Open on January 16 at numerous Valley-wide locations. Open to all kids age 3-5 years old, the free event offers three clinic times per location starting a 9, 10 and 11 a.m. where juniors and their parents will learn the basics skills of golf taught by qualified PGA and LPGA professionals. Locally, the event takes place at Cashman Park and Scottsdale Ranch Park. After the clinics, the kids will then participate in fun-filled, non-competitive golf games and tournaments. Each golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs (right-handed only), balls, a bag, and a visor – participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer.
“The Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” says Scott McNevin, executive director of the JGAA. “In fact, after 33 years, adults who attended Itty Bitty Open decades ago are now bringing their kids, so the second generation is already here.” A special contest with prizes will be held at each session for the “Best Dressed Golfer and Caddie Team.” Anything goes: classic golf fashion; contemporary golf fashion; or any unique golf duds that may come to mind. All winners will receive a trophy. Space is limited; sign up before January 11 deadline. For more information, call 602-944-6168. Register online at jgaa. bluegolf.com.

BUILDING BETTER GOLFERS
THROUGH BALANCE
By Michelle Talsma Everson
FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center can help you improve your golf game
B
ecause of its outdoor location and the ability for players to physically distance themselves from one another, the already popular game of golf has experienced an upswing during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, a University of Arizona study found that golf contributes $3.9 billion to the state’s economy. With near perfect weather, it’s the ideal time to hit the green. If you’re a golfer and looking to improve your game, don’t forget about balance. That’s right—according to the experts at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center, working on balance is a crucial way to improve your swing. Nick Newquist, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at FYZICAL, and Sandi Salazar, physical therapist, PT, MSPT, Nike GPS (golf performance specialist), CAFS, and the owner of the practice, are both confident that working on balance is often a missing component for many avid golfers.
14 • January 2021 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS
“Balance is often not viewed as important but working on your balance can lead to a longer drive, strength, and distance,” Newquist explains. As an avid golfer, most of his clients the last six months have been golfers looking to improve their game. “Golfers tend to be a very motivated crew when it comes to doing whatever it takes to improve their game and keep them on the course,” Salazar says. “So, what if I told you a balance deficit you were not even aware of was killing your game? This hidden demon could be the missing link to the game of your dreams.” Let’s face it, most of us are not even aware that we have an issue with our balance or balance has the stigma of being an issue for “old people.” The reality, however, is that most of us are walking around with a deficit in our balance system.
“We did a fun balance assessment on our staff and uncovered a deficit in our physical therapist (age 50) who continues to run, hike and participate in competitive volleyball,” Salazar shares. “The deficit likely started from a mild concussion many years ago but could lead to a more sinister injury if left unaddressed. It also uncovered a deficit in our other physical therapist (age 25), also stemming from a concussion during his hockey days. Once we discovered this surprising deficit, it could be traced to episodes of back, neck, knee and shoulder pain that we all have experienced along the way. That was really eye opening and caused us to take a deeper dive into just how big of an influence balance can be on our performance and pain. What we discovered was that balance is vital to optimal health and golf performance.” An underlying balance deficit is often the trigger for many joint aches and pains because the body is having to work harder to compensate for that deficit, both
myhyperlocalnews.com
Salazar and Newquist explain. The body naturally compensates for that balance deficit by limiting or slowing down our motion, allowing it to feel more stable. Over time, we start to notice this motion loss most pronounced in our thoracic spine (mid-back) and hips, which are vital to the golf swing. “Improving balance will allow for faster trunk and hip rotation, which directly translate to greater power behind the swing and greater distance to the drive,” Newquist says. “Improving balance can also lead to longevity on the golf course and endurance during and after a round of golf.” “Another key component to affecting balance and optimal performance is posture,” Salazar adds. “Even a slight deviation from our ideal posture affects the function of every single muscle in the body. Improving posture and balance reduces the underlying compensatory patterns that cause those nagging back, neck, hip, knee, elbow, and shoulder pains. When muscles aren’t compensating and are restored to their ideal functional length, strength and mobility increase, improving performance with the swing naturally becoming more effective.” At FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers, they incorporate a unique, but highly effective form of myofascial release for structural body work, postural correction and pain relief. This provides a powerful combination for results. “A simple shift in weight distribution from the being too far into the heels or the balls of the foot can have the effect of a lower golf score and change the
nature and quality of your shot and sets the stage for other improvements,” Newquist explains. “If such a small tweak can improve your game, imagine what a full golf performance assessment can do.” For a limited time, FYZICAL is offering free golf performance assessments for those looking to improve their game. Mobility, stability (also known as balance) and strength are required to meet the demands of golf and achieve the desired results and should be a part of any quality golf performance program, both Newquist and Salazar share. So how can FYZICAL help your golf game? “At FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center, balance and posture assessments are a staple to our program, along with taking into account any previous or existing injuries that may be impacting performance,” Newquist explains. “Combining the result of our balance and postural assessment with a joint-by-joint analysis allows us to develop a program tailored to the specific needs of each golfer.”
addressing balance, strength and motion components allows for you to be able to maximize the fun. “The results have the added benefit to translating to all other areas of your life,” Newquist says. “This is how FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers is helping
“There is no one size fits all that you can read in a magazine and do,” Salazar adds. “We all arrive at our present state of function or dysfunction through use and abuse over the course of our lifetime. This is impacted by injuries, accidents, surgeries and sustained postures related to our work and daily activities. Your program should be unique to you to maximize performance and longevity on the greens.”

Real Estate The Lowest Number Of Homes For Sale in Scottsdale Ever By Scott Gaertner
I
f you are not actually involved in real estate, there is a very good chance you don’t fully understand how crazy today’s real estate market really is. As I write this article on December 9, 2020, the active listing count in the Arizona Regional MLS for the greater Phoenix area is 6,544, which is down 19% from this time in November. That is crazy low! How low? A normal market is about 30,000 listings available. In December 2008, there were 56,000 listings available.
for sale than we entered it. We have run out of adjectives to describe the weakness of the supply situation. It looks almost certain that supply will collapse further during December, so if we had a good adjective, we would need a better one for January 3. Demand is extraordinarily strong for this late in the season, so we currently have a market that is more unbalanced (in favor of sellers) than we have ever seen before, even at the height of the 2005 bubble. But January will be even more extreme.” “There seems to be a certain amount of
inventory,” Mike says, “It is likely that we will see more distressed sales in 2021 than 2020, but 2020 was a record all-time low, and reverting to normal would help a bit with the supply situation. In fact, we would have to see a colossal increase in delinquency from current levels just to get back to normal supply conditions.” If that still doesn’t give you a sense of the critical nature of the real estate market today, consider this: If you are looking to buy a single-family home in Scottsdale North priced under $400,000, as of this morning, you have just one choice. And it isn’t built yet. In all of Scottsdale, you have just seven choices! In an unprecedented sales environment like this, the stakes for buyers and sellers are higher. Wins and losses can be magnified exponentially. The National Association Of Realtors statistics tell us that 87% of real estate agents fail in the first five years.
Michael Orr of the Cromford Report tells us that the supply situation has recently gone from bad to worse with five cities, including Scottsdale, hitting record lows for the number of homes available to buy: • Chandler: 140 • Gilbert: 116 • Mesa: 285 • Phoenix: 1,031 • Scottsdale: 725 (The lowest number since we have been keeping track!) “This is not because of a low number of new listings. The flow of new listings was respectable in November and exceeded the total for November 2019 and 2018. However, it increased by far less than the annual increase in demand, and many of these new listings went under contract within days of listing,” Orr tells us. “We exited November with 15% fewer homes myhyperlocalnews.com
That means that the vast majority of agents have never worked in a market anything like this. In real estate, experience isn’t expensive - it’s priceless. We have been your Scottsdale North trusted lifestyle experts for over 30 years and we can help. On the back page of this newspaper we have included some tips to help buyers be more successful. denial in some quarters,” he continues in the report. “Concerns about delinquency rates and forbearance are being widely discussed. The idea is often expressed that this can reverse the current situation as if this is a foregone conclusion. We do not think the level of delinquency is anything high enough to seriously disrupt the housing market. For such drama, you probably need to look to the commercial real estate market, particularly the retail, office, and hotel sectors. Housing has been bolstered by the pandemic. This is a worldwide phenomenon, not confined to Arizona or even the U.S.A. At times of medical emergency, people really value their homes across the globe.” Regarding the often-proposed notion that foreclosures and short sales will come in to flood the market with SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS • January 2021 • 17
Home Finding the Right Built-In Gas Grill Contributed by BBQ Island
B
uilt-in gas grills are a must-have to hosting a barbecue party in your backyard. As the name suggests, built-in grills are installed within a structure or built into it. With outdoor cooking more popular now than ever before, outdoor kitchens and equipment are hot sellers. There are many brands to choose from and even more products. Therefore, it is essential to keep a few things in mind before you choose a built-in gas grill for your home.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT BRAND With it being a popular installation, there are numerous options available for gas grills. Some of the popular brands that are used are Alfresco, BBQ Island Grills, Alturi, Blaze Grills, and more. Invest in a good quality gas grill that sustains for a long period of time, even if it is higher than the average price.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE AND MATERIAL Built-in gas grills can be made up of various materials including aluminum, stainless steel, and cast iron. Each material has benefits of its own. For instance, aluminum is inexpensive, lightweight and prevents rust and discoloration. Stainless steel is also longlasting and is touted to be the best material for building built-in-gas grills.
Reputed brands provide good quality products and also provide good customer after-sale service. Even if there is a requirement of replacing any part of your grill, you can always go back to the trusted brand. Model upgrades can also easily be accommodated in your built-in gas grill.
Choose the right material depending upon the climate and the area you live in. Ensure that your grill is covered at all times to increase its life cycle. Specifically, in winters and rainy seasons, it is essential to shield your grill from water. The size of the grill needs to be deciphered keeping in mind the area of your backyard.
PICK ONE WITH UNMATCHED STYLE AND CONVENIENCE Choose a built-in gas grill that easily merges with the design and aesthetic of your outdoor setup. A built-in gas grill will never be an eye-sore or look odd in your backyard. You may also choose to expand around the gas grill in keeping with the size and shape of the equipment.
Get a chance to build your dream outdoor kitchen featuring state of the art gas grill equipment with BBQ Island Inc. Make sure that you study the manual or take professional help from those who install your grill. This is essential to ensure security while using a built-in gas grill. A built-in gas grill is a long-term investment and is, therefore, an important one. Learn more at bbqislandinc.com.

of products from the world’s leading manufacturers, available to see, touch and experience all in one location. “Just as vintners hold their finest wine – called their reserve – for their family and closest friends, we have curated our highest quality and most unique collection of appliances, plumbing and lighting into one spectacular location,” says Jeremy Smith, co-owner and director of showrooms. “Central Arizona Reserve is my family’s 50 years of experience in kitchen and bath distilled into a singular showroom.” To coincide with the opening, Central Arizona Supply is also introducing 10 new appliance brands to its already impressive offering, including: Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, Hestan, Liebherr, Lynx, Miele and PITT Cooking. These manufacturers join Alfresco Grills, Asko, Bertazzoni, Blue Star, Café, Coyote Grills, Electrolux, GE, LG, Ilve, Monogram, Perlick, Scotsman, Smeg, Speed Queen, Sub-Zero, Wolf & Cove, ULine, Vent-A-Hood, Verona and Viking.
How To Sell A North Valley House That Didn’t Sell North Valley - If your home has just come off the market and hasn’t sold, don’t be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn’t Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period. Don’t risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on myhyperlocalnews.com
your investment. Before you hire a realtor, know the right questions to ask to save you time and money. “At Central Arizona Reserve, we exclusively showcase the best-inclass, most premium products and we look forward to welcoming designers, homeowners, builders and contractors who are looking for a fully immersive experience within the world of luxury kitchen and bath,” says Smith. “We only just introduced our appliance division in January 2020 and, in a year, the growth has already wildly surpassed our expectations. The appetite in the Arizona market for an independent company to be delivering the variety, quality and unique products that we are has exceeded our expectations on every level.” In January 2020, Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove were the first brands to sign on with Central Arizona Supply and helped spawn interest from other major appliance retailers. At Central Arizona Reserve, these three brands are continuing their support by having the largest and most diverse product offering on display in the state of Arizona.
“Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove comprise the premier brands in the luxury appliance category that saw our vision early on and began working with us immediately. With their support, we have been able to bring this Reserve concept to life and bring on other brands to complement them,” says Smith. Central Arizona Reserve is located at 15500 N. Greenway Hayden Loop in Scottsdale. For more information about Central Arizona Supply, visit CentralAZSupply.com.

Legal Out With the Old, In With the New By Libby Banks with the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
where your assets go on your death. The Trust does that, and more.
s we start the New Year, I want to talk about older methods of estate planning versus newer, more efficient and cost-effective means of planning. Your estate is simply what you own. For most reading this article, that at least includes a home, a retirement account, bank accounts and maybe a brokerage account. In the not-sodistant past, planning for your estate at death meant preparing a Last Will and Testament. Today, we use the Revocable Living Trust more often.
HERE ARE A FEW ADVANTAGES OF USING THE TRUST: The Revocable Living Trust Helps You if You Are Incapacitated Both a Will and a Revocable Living Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Revocable Living Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets should you become incapacitated. In the Trust, you name your successor trustee who steps into your shoes to pay your bills and manage your finances when you can’t.
There are many benefits to using the Revocable Living Trust, but often people think that only the wealthy need a Trust. I think that instead, we should consider the Trust as simply the more modern way of planning
A Revocable Living Trust Avoids Probate and Reduces Expenses A Will says who will receive the assets in your estate after your death, but it does not automatically transfer your assets. Instead, your executor
A
must probate the estate, starting with submitting the Will and an application to the probate court and asking the court to appoint them executor. Until they have the appointment papers, they cannot do anything with your estate. A Revocable Living Trust, on the other hand, appoints your successor trustee who can step in to take charge of your estate promptly. The Trustee can quickly gather, sell and distribute your assets to your beneficiaries with no need for a court’s involvement. How the Trust Works When you set up a Trust, you transfer assets from yourself to the trust. While you are alive and able, you are the Trustee and the only beneficiary. For a married couple, managing your assets in the trust won’t feel much different than it does when you hold your assets in joint tenancy. You
maintain full control of your assets, doing the same things with them you did before: write checks, buy and sell, direct your stockbroker. Even your income tax returns stay the same. Transferring assets to the Trust is also relatively simple. In my office, we transfer all of the Arizona real estate into your trust and assist you in retitling your other assets. Once you understand how to title assets, you won’t need to call us unless you want our help. The Revocable Living Trust makes sense for most of us. To find out if it makes sense for you, take advantage of my free initial consultation for estate planning. ARRIVE PHOENIX IS HANDCRAFTED BY LOCALS

N
ow open, and featuring high-tech safety protocols, ARRIVE Phoenix invites visitors and locals alike to explore its gorgeous open-air design and gracious home-grown hospitality at Uptown Phoenix’s first-ever neighborhood hotel. ARRIVE Phoenix is an allnew 79-room, $25 million boutique hotel spanning two restored mid-century modern towers at Camelback Road and 4th Avenue (400 W. Camelback). Opening in two phases, guests will be able to check in at the colorful Pop Stand, a handcrafted popsicle shop that doubles as the registration desk, plus enjoy the onsite Cartel Coffee Lab or lounge around the Lylo Swim Club. Then soon, the second guestroom tower featuring the Don Woods’ Say When rooftop bar is scheduled to open. Of course, the world has changed since ARRIVE Phoenix kicked off construction more than a year ago, but guests can rest assured that every step has been taken to ensure their safety, says ARRIVE Hotels & Restaurants CEO and Co-Founder Matt Steinberg. “From touchless on-site payments, to sanitized and pre-bagged linens and bathrobes, every aspect of the guest experience has been thoughtfully redesigned for today’s hospitality world.” This includes the use of Hospital-Grade Electrostatic Disinfection machines utilizing a non-toxic disinfectant solution (the same technology deployed in hospitals) to sanitize guestrooms before and after any staff member enters the room. Plus, guests are required to wear masks in all public areas.
myhyperlocalnews.com
As part of that mission to welcome people to the neighborhood, ARRIVE has partnered with Great Minds Drink Alike, the hospitality company known for globally recognized local favorites Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour and Little Rituals to create Lylo Swim Club, a standout poolside bar and restaurant to anchor the hotel. ARRIVE also collaborated with top local artists and designers such as ModFire, Slabhaus and Urban Plough to put a stylish, uniquely Phoenix twist on this boutique property. “Phoenix’s world-class dining and drinking scenes and vibrant arts and design community is what drew us to Uptown in the first place,” says ARRIVE’s Co-Founder and Chief Development Officer Chris Pardo. “So, we’re proud to have partnered with top local artisans to make ARRIVE Phoenix part of the local, cultural fabric, right down to the rooftop lounge named after a famed former tenant of these very buildings, Don Woods’ Say When.” ARRIVE Phoenix features on-site dining, drinks and amenities such as: THE POP STAND Paying homage to the team’s favorite Mexican paleterías, the ARRIVE popsicle stand is the starting point for an ARRIVE escape. Hotel guests will enjoy a welcoming gift of handcrafted paletas-style popsicles while completing their check-in process. Guests will feel like kids in a candy shop as they choose from an ever-changing menu made from fresh fruit, luxurious cream and even your favorite booze, such as strawberries con crema, chile mango, pink lemonade, and frozen margarita.
CARTEL UPTOWN PHOENIX Cartel Coffee Lab’s Cartel Uptown Phoenix is the boutique roaster’s first central Phoenix location, housed in a sleek 600 square feet space fronting Camelback Road. Offering fresh baked goodies and grab-and-go meals, Cartel Uptown Phoenix offers their full coffee program, complete with single origin beans, canned cold brew, plus the classic six-ounce cappuccino, which allows aficionados to experience and appreciate espresso and milk in perfect balance. LYLO SWIM CLUB Pronounced ‘lie-low’ (a U.K. term for a pool float), Lylo tempts with delicious, balanced and refreshing cocktails enhancing its pool setting, with craft cocktails such as rotating sorbet bellinis, fresh fruit Caipirinhas and other reworked poolside favorites, like a rum-spiked version of the classic Dole Whip frozen pineapple drink. Rounded out with a thirst-quenching selection of canned craft beers and wines, the 15-item drink list can be enjoyed poolside by the bar or in the social-distancing-friendly cabana service. The fare is served with eco-conscious thoughtfulness, including colorful plush acrylic drinkware and small compostable wares. Open daily to guests and locals, Lylo also features an all-day menu of light, Hawaiian-Japanese influenced bites, such as made-to-order musubi, stunning poke bowls and Japanese-style fried chicken. DISNEY+
WandaVision Marvel’s first Disney+ show is a doozy. Wanda and Vision finally find their peace in a quaint town straight out of a 1950s sitcom. In fact, it very well might be out of several sitcoms from several decades. As they start to uncover the truth, a more sinister presence lurks to destroy the quiet, family life they’ve worked so hard to create. A uniquely funny, yet still epic and heartfelt series, WandaVision takes the MCU to a new place for its next chapter, bringing several familiar and new characters along with it. Starting on Disney+ January 15. .
One Night in Miami Imagine a night where four icons converse over several hours. That’s the hook to One Night in Miami, which features incredible performances from actors portraying such characters as Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown. What starts as a celebration of the former’s recent victory turns into an in-depth conversation about their responsibilities in the fight for civil rights. The directorial debut of Regina King, the film is a nice showcase of how thrilling such a simple concept can be. On Amazon Prime January 15.

Tips For Homebuyers That Want To Make a Competitive Offer In Today's Market Hire An Agent You Trust In today's real estate market, you actually need a strategy to succeed. Remember to let your homebuying team guide you on your journey, not your emotions. Their support and expertise will keep you from compromising on your must-haves and future financial stability.
Understand Your Finances Having a complete understanding of your budget and how much house you can afford is essential. The best way to know this is to reach out to your lender to get pre-approved for a loan early in the homebuying process. NOTE: THE LENDER YOU CHOOSE MATTERS. They can literally determine your success. You agent should be able to help you with your choice
Be Ready To Move Quickly According to the NAR the average property being sold today is receiving more than three offers and is only on the market for a few weeks. Be prepared to work with your agent to submit an offer as quickly as possible. Following the advice of an experienced agent can make all the difference.
Make a Fair Offer It’s only natural to want the best deal you can get on a home. However, Freddie Mac also warns that submitting an offer that’s too low can lead sellers to doubt how serious you are as a buyer. “If it’s meant to be . . .” is really not a formula for obtaining the home you love.
Be a Flexible Negotiator After submitting an offer, the seller may accept it, reject it, or counter it with their own changes. In a competitive market, it’s important to stay nimble throughout the negotiation process. This part can be extremely frustrating. Many buyers give up too early. Resolve and creativity are often rewarded.
If your thinking of buying its VERY important to have a knowledgeable and experienced agent in the area you are purchasing. Give The Scott Gaertner Group a call today! With over 35 years of experience and selling more homes than anyone in 85266 they will help make the home buying process a great experience!
