ARIZONA IN REVIEW: 2019, A YEAR TO REMEMBER

By Governor Doug Ducey

2019 WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR ARIZONA. From breaking through 300,000 new jobs added since 2015, to earning the state’s highest-ever credit rating; coming together to sign historic water legislation; recognizing 60 years of partnership with Sonora, Mexico; blazing the trail as the first state in the nation to provide universal recognition of out-of-state occupational licenses; passing historic tax reform that benefits middle class families; boosting Arizona’s Rainy Day Fund to $1 billion while investing in teachers, students, infrastructure, public safety and more. KEY HIGHLIGHTS SECURING ARIZONA’S WATER FUTURE: Governor Ducey in January signed legislation ratifying Arizona’s Drought Contingency Plan (DCP), allowing Arizona to sign onto an inter-state water agreement that outlines ways the state will contribute to conserving more water from the Colorado River. Arizona joined six other states and Mexico in the signing. In April, President Trump signed legislation formalizing the DCP, Arizona’s most significant water reforms in four decades. A FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE, BALANCED BUDGET: Arizona’s balanced budget added $542 million to Arizona’s Rainy Day Fund, bringing it to a record $1 billion and helping better protect Arizona’s investments during the next economic downturn. PASSING REVENUE-NEUTRAL TAX REFORM: Arizona’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget built on the tax relief passed as part of President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to make Arizona’s code simpler, flatter and more fair. The revenue neutral tax reforms—the most significant of the past 30 years—prioritized middle and low-income earners, increasing Arizona’s standard deductions to $12,000 for individual filers and $24,000 for married filers. For the first time in Arizona, the state standard deduction matches the federal standard deduction, representing a significant simplification of the tax code.

INVESTING IN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS: The FY 2020 budget added $660 million new dollars to K-12 public schools, bringing the total new dollars added to public education since 2015 to $4.5 billion.

GROWING CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION: Governor Ducey’s FY 2020 budget invested $10 million to expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings across Arizona. Through a grant program, high schools with CTE programs will receive up to $1,000 for each student who graduates with a certification in specific industries. The budget also invested $20 million to expand Pima Community College’s Aviation Technology Program and $5.8 million to expand Maricopa Community College’s healthcare offerings. JOBS ON THE RISE: Arizona this year surpassed 300,000 new private-sector jobs added since 2015, with companies such as Infosys, Offerpad, Raytheon, Microsoft, Benchmark Electronics, Lucid Motors and more making major jobs announcements this year. EXPANDING I-17, INVESTING IN INFRASTRUCTURE: Governor Ducey announced that investments topping $300 million will widen I-17 to three lanes along 15 miles between Anthem and Black Canyon City and build an 8-mile system of flex lanes on the grade between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. The project is set to begin by spring 2021, with completion of all improvements expected by 2023. INVESTING IN HEALTHY FAMILIES: Arizona kicked off the year with a plan to invest $56 million to expand Arizona’s childcare subsidy programs, increasing access to childcare for low-income working families and foster parents. SUPPORTING THOSE WHO KEEP ARIZONA SAFE: This year, Arizona added $74 million dollars to provide raises for over 14,400 public safety personnel employed by the state, totaling roughly 40 percent of the state workforce. Those receiving pay raises

included State Troopers, personnel at the Department of Corrections, the Department of Juvenile Corrections and the Arizona State Hospital and caseworkers at the Department of Child Safety. SAFER SCHOOLS: Governor Ducey’s executive budget included the first-ever dedicated funding for school counselors. With $20 million added to Arizona’s school safety grant program, in total, 383 school resource officers, counselors and social workers were funded through the program, with more on the way. EXPANDING SUICIDE AWARENESS IN SCHOOLS: Governor Ducey in September signed the Mitch Warnock Act, expanding suicide prevention and awareness training throughout Arizona schools. The bill requires school districts and charter schools to provide training in suicide awareness and prevention to school guidance counselors, teachers,

principals and other school personnel who work with students in grades 6 through 12. NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR CYBERSECURITY: Recognizing Arizona’s bipartisan leadership in cybersecurity, the National Governors Association (NGA) selected Arizona along with five other states to participate in the NGA’s policy academy on election cybersecurity operations. Through the program, Arizona receives technical assistance from NGA staff to develop, implement and scale training and best practices throughout the state to improve coordination between election officials and reduce cyber-related risks ahead of the 2020 election. All in all, 2019 was a year to remember – and we are looking forward to an equally successful 2020. scottsdalenorthnews.com

SCOTTSDALE NAMED A GOLD-LEVEL BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY THE LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS HONORED THE EFFORTS OF SCOTTSDALE TO BUILD BETTER PLACES TO BIKE BY DESIGNATING IT A GOLD-LEVEL BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY (BFC) FOR 2019 - 2023. The award recognizes Scottsdale for its commitment to creating transportation and recreational resources that benefit its residents of all ages and abilities while encouraging healthier and more sustainable transportation choices. “Communities like Scottsdale are leading the nation when it comes to important livability factors that people want where they call home, like safe and accessible places to bike,” said Bill Nesper, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists. The League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly America program sets the standard for how communities scottsdalenorthnews.com

evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and accessibility, while allowing them to benchmark progress toward making biking better. With this latest round of 53 new and renewing awardees, there are currently 488 Bicycle Friendly Communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Gold BFC award recognizes Scottsdale’s commitment to improving conditions for all people who bike through investments in bike education programs, bike events that promote and encourage people to choose biking, probike policies and bike infrastructure. Scottsdale Councilwoman Solange Whitehead said her family chose Scottsdale because of biking. “Our kids would hop on bikes and end up miles away at Tempe Town Lake or thousands of feet up at Windgate Peak," said Whitehead. "I cherish riding to work on the greenbelt and mountain biking in Scottsdale’s

McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I am not surprised that studies routinely show that bike-friendly cities are healthier, happier and more prosperous.” More than 850 communities have applied for recognition by the Bicycle Friendly Community program, which provides a roadmap to making biking better for communities of all shapes and sizes. While the award process considers very visible elements such as bike infrastructure, other essential elements include efforts around education, encouragement, evaluation and enforcement all through the lens of equity. The rigorous application process is an educational tool and includes an opportunity for local bicyclists and active transportation advocates to provide input on their experiences and perceptions of bicycling in their community. Scottsdale sought community input throughout the application process with

public meetings and a survey. “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to provide input during the process,” said Senior Transportation Planner Susan Conklu. “Not only does it help with the Bicycle Friendly Community application, but it helps us continue to improve biking in Scottsdale.” The five levels of the BFC award – diamond, platinum, gold, silver and bronze, plus an honorable mention category – provide a clear incentive for communities to continuously improve. Scottsdale is one of only 39 communities nationwide to achieve the gold-level or higher designation. Awarded communities must renew their status every four years to ensure that they not only maintain existing efforts, but also keep up with changing technology, national safety standards, and community-driven best practices. THE ARIZONA MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER! By Scott Gaertner

A Salute to John Williams, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as works by Beethoven, Ravel and Rachmaninoff highlight this year’s Festival Orchestra Week in February. Under the direction of Maestro Robert Moody, The Festival Orchestra is comprised of musicians from the nation’s finest orchestras. Additional symphonic works include Elgar’s Enigma Variations, featuring the stirring “Nimrod” movement, as well as Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America, which tells the dramatic stories of immigrants to our nation.

THE 29TH ANNUAL ARIZONA MUSICFEST FESTIVAL SEASON THIS YEAR BRINGS AN EVEN MORE DIVERSE LINEUP OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTS RIGHT TO SCOTTSDALE NORTH AUDIENCES. From Grammy award winner Michael Bolton; to multitalented entertainer Vanessa Williams and acclaimed country star Sara Evans; all the way to iconic TV, stage and screen celebrity Tony Danza. And the best part? Almost all of the performances are either located right here in Scottsdale North or they are just a stone’s throw away! No more driving in the early dark of those fall and winter evenings to travel all the way to downtown Phoenix or Tempe to hear the rhythms your heart has been longing for.

“We are thrilled to offer Musicfest audiences another exciting season filled with exceptional artists from across the music spectrum.” said Arizona Musicfest Executive and Producing Director Allan Naplan. “While some artists are returning to the Musicfest stage, others are making their much-anticipated festival debuts. Combined, our line-up of diverse artists and musical genres offers something for everyone.”

Founded in 1991, the Arizona Music festival is a secular non-profit arts organization based in North Scottsdale and produces an annual concert festival as well as important music education programs, youth performance opportunities and a community lifelong learning series for the Greater Phoenix area. We recently did a spotlight video for Connecting Scottsdale North at a fantastic event at Highlands church and it was clear that everyone enjoyed the venue and the performances.

A LOOK AT WHAT’S NEW FOR THE 2020 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN

NEW VENUES, ENHANCED FAN EXPERIENCES SPICE UP 85TH EDITION OF “THE PEOPLE’S OPEN” THE 2020 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, AND THERE IS ALREADY PLENTY OF BUZZ AT TPC SCOTTSDALE TO PREPARE FOR THE 85TH EDITION OF “THE PEOPLE’S OPEN.” Construction began on September 16 and will continue for more than four months leading up to the tournament, which will tee it up January 27 – February 2 in Scottsdale. “Each and every year we try to improve upon the previous year, and this year is no different,” said

Tournament Chairman Tim Woods. “Everyone is aware of our iconic 16th hole and the various popular hospitality venues throughout the course, but our focus the last couple of years has been to enhance the overall experience for our general admission guests, something we are doing again for 2020.” One of those new venues open to the public is the Kiva Club, a multi-level general admission venue located next to Bay Club that offers views of holes 10 and 17 and will provide food and beverage options for purchase. Kiva Club will feature a main viewing deck and a second-level platform with tables and seating across the rail, along with a large bar in the middle, making it a prime spot to watch the golf action. “The 17th hole has really grown over the last few years, but the majority of that growth was corporate hospitality,” Woods said. “It’s such a great hole, we wanted to create a venue for the public to be able to experience it in style and comfort as well.” Another public hospitality venue, while not new, is being expanded for the fourth straight year. The area atop the hill overlooking hole No. 12, No. 6 green and No. 13 tee which started in 2016 as

El Rancho will get yet another upgrade for the 2020 tournament. The extremely popular generaladmission viewing area now named The Ridge presented by Taylor Morrison will double in size, providing a nearly 36,000-square-feet viewing platform featuring lounge style furniture as well as food and beverage options, along with drink rails on three sides. Another major expansion will be found at the finishing 18th hole. Last year the new E18hteen venue was introduced and doubled in size; this year that venue will be matched by the new Scorekeeper suites that will sit directly across from E18hteen on the west side of the 18th Fairway and will feature a double-decker, arcum-style structure that will house 60 additional hospitality suites on the 442-yard, par4 finishing hole. Other changes for 2020 include the addition of four new loge suites near the tee box on the south side of the 16th hole that will include Aces Lounge, an exclusive bar for loge patrons aptly named to honor all of the players who have carded a hole-in-one on the famed 16th hole; five new loge suites at the Cove that will offer views of 17 green and 18 tee box; and newly refurbished Greenskeeper Suites.

The demand for these cars will continue to grow, and we’re excited to lead this trend with some of the finest, low-mileage examples from this era.” Regardless of the style, make, model or year, there is certain to be a wide range of all of these represented at this year’s Barrett-Jackson , in addition to all the other events and fanfare surrounding the auction itself. One of the nation’s premier collector-car auction houses, Russo and Steele will provide hundreds of topquality collector cars for a variety of buyers at their new site. Featuring the equivalent of five football fields of tents with easy access off the Scottsdale Road exit, acres of contiguous and close proximity parking will greet attendees along with valet parking directly at the main entrance. Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions is thrilled to offer an ultra-rare 1985 Lamborghini Countach QV Downdraft at its 2020 auction. Known as the most powerful Countach variant ever built, this particular model offers 455 bhp and was used as a factory press car and was the photo subject of the Downdraft brochure distributed at the 1985 Geneva Salon. Fewer than 1/3 of all Countach models built were Downdraft variants and this model is without

question the very best example of this variant to ever be presented at public auction anywhere. It is 100 percent fully restored by Californiabased marque specialists at a cost of almost $300,000 to exact original specifications down to brand new Pirelli P7s and Ansa Sports Exhaust, which are all period-correct. It even comes with original books and all tools complete.

Built in February 1985 in Iconic Bianco Polo Park with Rosso livery, this Countach Downdraft was the very first to be imported into the United States by Al Copeland, car enthusiast and multi-race winning offshore boat racer, and owner of Popeyes Chicken nationwide restaurants. It was kept in Copeland’s New Orleans car museum for 15 years resulting in just 9,750 miles on the odometer.

LET’S CONNECT SCOTTSDALE NORTH! By Scott Gaertner

L

ast month’s cover story “Scottsdale North: Connecting Forgotten Territory” described how the very best part of Scottsdale has been ignored and neglected (check out ScottsdaleNorthNews. com if you missed it). That story was really just a description of something I perceive as an injustice. The purpose of this article is to try and do something about it. This is an appeal for your help to create an identity for the furthest most beautiful section of North Scottsdale - Scottsdale North. Consider the comparison to Arcadia in Phoenix. Those who know the valley hear the name Arcadia, and it immediately calls to mind gorgeous, mid-century homes built on grassy lawns with mature landscaping and

lots of foliage set in the middle of the city. Arcadia was built on citrus groves and low scrub desert that was scraped and bladed 100 years ago. If you were magically transported into Arcadia, you would have no idea where you were - it could be anywhere in the Midwest or even California. Scottsdale North is not that.

Scottsdale North is the thickest of High Sonoran Desert that has been carefully preserved in a rural setting, with lighting restrictions to protect the starry dark sky nights. Apart from the city, Scottsdale North is a place of majestic beauty, quiet solitude, abundant wildlife, ancient artifacts, exhilarating exercise and, most of all, community pride. Transporting you here would leave no doubt where you landed.

Legal Loophole Costs Local SCOTTSDALE NORTH ZIP CODES SOME OF Homeseller $3,742 in the Sale THE “MOST EXPENSIVE” IN METRO PHOENIX of Their North Valley Home

I

n a new ranking released by PropertyShark, the company analyzed residential sales between January 1 and November 5 of 2019 to determine the most expensive zip codes in the metro area. Median sales prices were calculated for each zip code.

Naturally, Paradise Valley’s 85253 ranked #1 among the valley’s most expensive zip codes but it also broke a record by edging into the top 100 most expensive zip codes in the country. According to PropertyShark, PV’s 85253 took the 93rd spot with a median sale price of $1.46 million. Following 85253 were some of Scottsdale North’s most prominent areas. Scottsdale North’s 85262, 85266 and 85255 came in second, third and fourth respectively on the ranking list. Homes in the 85262 zip code sold with a median price of $815,000; homes in 85266, $728,000; homes in 85255, $650,000. A few other notable rankings include 85259 with an average of $625,000; Carefree’s 85377 at $606,000; and 85258 with a median of $480,000. The “magic zip code” of Scottsdale’s 85254, which lies along the Phoenix/Scottsdale border, holds the #10 spot with a median sales price of $451,000, while North Phoenix’s 85050 is holding strong at No. 24 with a median of $361,000. PropertyShark also ranked 50 of the most expensive zip codes in the “desert states” of Arizona and Nevada. According to the company’s report, “After releasing our traditional year-end report

of the 100 most expensive zip codes in the U.S., we were curious to see what the priciest desert states zip codes were in 2019. After all, Arizona made its way into top 100 for the first time ever with Paradise Valley’s 85253, while Nevada was represented by two zips for the first time: 89413 and 89402 in the Lake Tahoe enclaves of Glenbrook and Crystal Bay, respectively. Maricopa County nabbed 25 of the state’s most expensive zip codes, while Pima County filled two other spots on the list. Scottsdale North’s 85262 zip code took the fifth most expensive on the desert states list. Paradise Valley's 85253 ZIP code also ranked No. 3 on the list of most expensive desert states zip codes, as the only Arizona zip code with medians above $1 million. Other fun facts by the numbers, according to PropertyShark: • With seven each, Phoenix and Scottsdale tie for the highest number of expensive zips per location • Paradise Valley remains home to Arizona’s priciest zip code, up 40 percent in two years • Arizona’s most expensive zips are almost exclusively in Maricopa County

PropertyShark calculates medians based on sale prices rather than asking prices to more accurately reflect the reality on the ground, as the final sale price can easily be higher than the initial asking figure in competitive markets. It also circumvents properties that linger on the market for extended periods of time from skewing the figures.

FINE ART EXPO R E T U R N S TO S C OT TSDA L E C

By Molly Cerreta Smith

ome January 10, a dedicated parcel of desert in North Scottsdale will become a temporary arts community for the following 10 weeks as the Arizona Fine Art Expo returns to the valley. Renowned artists from across the globe will set up their studios and create original pieces of fine art in what has come to be known as Arizona's premier venue for collecting fine art.

Judi Combs, founding partner of the Arizona Fine Art Expo, shares, “Actually, Jess Davila (stone sculptor) talked to me about doing a 10-week show for over a decade. It took ten years to make sure I had someone who I could depend on, and it was my brother, Denny Long and his wife, Judy. I approached them and we all chose Scottsdale for the venue as it is well known in the art world.”

Celebrating its 15th year, the Arizona Fine Art Expo combines the aspects of a juried fine art festival, the elements of a gallery and the inner-workings of an artist’s studio. Today, the event reaches artists around the globe and provides an outlet for the community to appreciate art and to help educate children about fine art as well. During the Expo, guests have the opportunity to meet the artists, watch them in action and learn about their inspiration, techniques and spirit, as well as stroll throughout an enhanced two-acre sculpture garden, which will feature stone, metal, glass and mixed media sculptures.

The event features 124 patron-friendly artist studios within a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their passion, inspiration and techniques. While the fine art show features several local artists, some artists will travel from Israel, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Holland, China, Canada, France and throughout the United States to participate in the show. Part of what makes the Expo so unique is the friendships and community that develops during the course of each show. “The camaraderie among the artists is very special. The local patrons in Scottsdale and surrounding areas love our show and return every year to support them,” says Combs.

When asked how the Expo originally came to be,

Artist Beth Hyatt, who has lived in Arizona since 2002, has been participating in the Expo for more than a decade and loves the family element that is created during each season. “For ten weeks, I’m surrounded by fantastic artists who are like my extended family. Not only do we have fun together, we learn from each other,” she says of the Expo experience. “I’m also grateful for their support. Sometimes, if I’m getting too close to my work, I can ask for and receive honest feedback and helpful suggestions.” Hyatt is best known for her portraits of people and animals, which focus on faces, but her new abstract work focuses on the female body and motion. “With my facial paintings, I was capturing emotions through the eyes, but now I’m having fun discovering how I can capture emotion through body movement,” she says. “With my faces, I would often include subtle colors that in some ways would appear invisible, and with my fashion series, the figures are not outlined – I create patterns that trick the brain into thinking there is an outline of

the figure.” Hyatt will be showcasing her fashion paintings during this year’s Expo. Prescott resident Charles Huckeba is a contemporary painter who will be showcasing three distinct styles of paintings this year: one that focuses on rock art, another that is abstract, and a third style featuring his Chroma Textures of southwestern animals. A participant in the Expo since the very beginning, Huckeba says, “The Arizona Fine Art Expo provides a platform of exposure like no other… it’s an art destination that gives us a unique opportunity to connect face to face with collectors. We’re not just there to show and sell our work…we’re there to get to know the patrons. It’s a reciprocal relationship. I also enjoy the sense of community and camaraderie among the artists. We sometimes experience ups and downs during the 10 weeks of the show, and everyone is always very supportive.” This year, Huckeba is set to exhibit a new series of his hand-painted containers featuring the colors of nature…deep burgundies, deep blues and greens with a plant flora theme. He is also drawing inspiration from the Hopi culture, but taking artistic and archaeological license inserting his own style into his paintings of petroglyphs and pottery shards. His will also exhibit his popular “Chroma Texture” assemblage paintings of wildlife and flora on small and medium-sized canvases. scottsdalenorthnews.com

William Daggett, a wood sculptor residing in Paradise Valley, will be showcasing his art for the fourth time at this year’s Expo. “I couldn’t be more excited! The Combs and Longs [show founders/organizer] are experts at setting us up for success and having it all run smoothly for all of the 100+ artists and patrons that are at the show. The 10-week show gives the patrons multiple opportunities to revisit the Expo through special events to see their favorite artists. Wonderful friendships are developed and shared through art.”

all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; solder and weld jewelry; and assemble mosaics. Art is for sale and commissions are welcomed. The Expo begins Friday, January 10 and runs through Sunday, March 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily under the “festive white tents” at 26540

N. Scottsdale Rd., on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax Roads, next to MacDonald’s Ranch. Season passes cost $10; season passes for seniors and military are $8; and children under 12 are free. Parking is free. For more details about participating artists or events during the show, call (480) 837-7163 or visit www.ArizonaFineArtEXPO.com.

Daggett creates sculptures from ancient Juniper. Of his artistic process, he says, “Using multi hand and machine tools, I let the wood tell me what it wants to be. It is a collaboration of what I see and the spirit of what Mother Nature has already given me to work with, bringing it back to life.” For the upcoming Expo, Daggett will be featuring Juniper sculptures including hummingbirds, swallows, eagles, fire, elephants, horses, ocean waves, and abstracts as well as patina and colored bronzes of four of the most popular sculptures including hummingbird, swallows, eagle, and horse. Throughout the 10 weeks, artisans will sketch passionately in radiograph, pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; chisel, carve and shape stone; and saw and carve wood sculptures and fine furniture. KIDS’ CORNER

Taking your kids to

A PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY GAME

I

t’s hockey season! With the regular season being in full swing from October through April, and post-season lasting until early June, going to a hockey game is a great way to get your kids out of the house and have a fun sports experience for the whole family. We love going to see the Arizona Coyotes whenever we get the chance, but we’ve learned a few lessons about taking kids to hockey games along the way. Here are some tips to help you and your kids appreciate the noise, excitement, and frozen fun of attending a professional hockey game.

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

TICKETS Like all professional sporting events, there is a range of pricing for tickets to hockey matches. Prices will fluctuate based on demand for each game, seat location, and time purchased, so take time to plan ahead to maximize your enjoyment of the event. Scope out your options and buy tickets for seats in a location that works best for your family. Upper level or club level seating can be a bit quieter and is less expensive, while sitting closer to the ice lets you see more action. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Hockey games are cold. Really cold. Here in the desert, it’s important to remember that you need to bring sweaters or jackets with you to the game, or you and your kids will get uncomfortable very quickly. Wear long pants, leave the flip flops at home, and dress for very low temperatures. PARKING Plan ahead to know where to park and the directions for getting into the parking lot and then the hockey rink. Take time to know where you are allowed to park and, if possible, purchase passes in advance to make getting to and from the arena easier for everyone. FOOD Anticipate mealtimes and plan food purchases and locations before you go. There are food options in the arena, but when you attend a Coyotes game, Westgate also has tons of great options for places to eat. Plan mealtimes and venues to make sure your kids stay on schedule and avoid the crankiness.

16 • January 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

SAFETY Plan your safety and exit strategies. Discuss where to meet if someone gets lost, know where your seats are, know how to keep track of your children, and agree on deciding when to bail on watching the match. PARTICIPATE IN THE KIDS CLUB Howler’s Kids Club is open to kids 14 and under, and is a great way to help your kids get excited about hockey and attending a game. Kids Club memberships range from free to special exclusive pricing, and some of the benefits include discounted tickets to certain games, special IDs and wristbands, autograph events, and participation in the Kids Post Game Slapshot. BE PREPARED FOR NOISE AND HOOPLA Remember that a hockey game and the crowd attending it will be very loud and at times can become really rowdy. Most hockey fans are pretty well behaved, but if you are concerned about rowdy behavior be sure to check out the stadium layout in advance to find places to take your kid to get out of the crowd. Many parents also bring headphones and a mobile device with movies, music or games to help smaller children avoid the noise. My advice is that you know your kid best. Think about how they will react to big, noisy crowds and the loud sounds of hockey players crashing into the glass. Some kids absolutely love hockey, but others not so much. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy cheering for your team. Hockey is a game, and games are all about having fun. Going to a hockey game should be an adventure with your kids and a great memory for your whole family. Be sure to check out LadybugsBlog.com for more tips on finding fun adventures and activities with your kids everywhere in Arizona!

CCUSD SUPERINTENDENT’S CURRENT LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

W

e are so fortunate to live in a community where so many people and entities in our community graciously support our schools in so many ways. One of our newest partnerships this school year is with the Town of Carefree. Titled Carefree Cares, it was developed after Carefree Mayor, Les Peterson, Carefree Cave Creek Chamber President/CEO, Patty Villeneuve and I attended a Maricopa County Greater Phoenix Chamber meeting of mayors, chamber executives and superintendents. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the ways the cities and towns could support education. Although it was noted at the meeting that the Legislature and the Governor determine state funding for our public school districts, many in the group felt that individual towns and cities could do more on the local level to support our schools.

where they receive a certificate and a gift card from a community member who prefers to remain anonymous. We are so proud to announce the inaugural honorees of Carefree Cares below. Congratulations to:

Mayor Peterson asked about having a quarterly program to recognize and honor staff members to show the town’s appreciation and Carefree Cares was born. Each school quarter, every school identifies a staff member based on exemplary service they have provided to our CCUSD community and schools. The honorees are invited to a Carefree Town Council meeting where each council member reads their nomination accolades and the Mayor presents them with a Carefree Cares pin. At a subsequent CCUSD Governing Board meeting, the honorees are presented to the Governing Board and public

GETAWAY

Out Wickenburg Way

GREAT GETAWAYS IN ARIZONA

VULTURE CITY

J

ust a short drive north and west of Phoenix, you’ll find the oldest Arizona town north of Tucson, and the Dude Ranch capital of the state. Wickenburg is a thriving small town full of Old West, Arizona Territory traditions. Whether you are planning a horseback riding vacation, on your way to Las Vegas, headed for Havasu, or just looking for a quick day trip out of town, Wickenburg is a quaint, local slice of western charm that you simply must stop to visit. Here are some of our favorite spots to see when we visit the birthplace of the Bola Tie (the official neck wear of the State of Arizona).

HASSAYAMPA RIVER PRESERVE The Hassayampa River Preserve stretches for five miles along the Hassayampa River, along highway 60 as you head into Wickenburg from Phoenix. Originally established by the Nature Conservancy to protect more than 290 species of birds on 70,000 acres of riparian forestland, the preserve is now managed by the Maricopa County Park System. The preserve provides self-guided trails along the lush river bottoms and floodplain, and through cottonwood-willow forests and dense mesquite bosques, where you can view a wide variety of wildlife species, including the endangered Southwestern Will Flycatcher, the rare Arizona Red-Shouldered Hawk, and the largest concentration

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier of migrating turkey vultures in the state. If you love bird and wildlife watching, the Hassayampa River Preserve offers some of the best views in Arizona. DESERT CABALLEROS WESTERN MUSEUM Known as “Arizona’s Most Western Museum,” the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is a state of the art museum open to visitors year round. The museum displays a collection of more than 400 works of art about the American West by artists such as Frederick Remington, Charles Russell, and Joe Beeler. It also showcases historical exhibits depicting turn-of-thecentury Wickenburg, and has special features for kids, like the “Out on the Ranch” exhibit. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum is definitely worth visiting. FRONTIER STREET AND HISTORIC WALKING TOUR The town of Wickenburg is full of Western history. To celebrate this, their Chamber of Commerce developed a self-guided tour of historic buildings, plus about two dozen bronze sculptures and works of art placed throughout the downtown, to showcase the town’s roots. One of the most famous highlights is the Jail Tree, one of Arizona’s Centennial Witness Trees, which acted as a “jail” for shackling prisoners and

18 • January 2020 • SCOTTSDALE NORTH NEWS

drunks for over 20 years before the jailhouse building was put up in 1890. The tour also includes six large bronze sculptures and 16 linking pieces, all uniquely colored to appear realistic. Each of the large sculptures includes a button with a narrative from Arizona State Historian Marshall Trimble describing the history of Wickenburg. VULTURE CITY AND VULTURE MINE TOURS The Vulture mine just outside of Wickenburg opened in 1863 when Henry Wickenburg, a prospector during the California Gold Rush, discovered a quartz outcropping containing gold. Shortly after the mine was established, the small mining town of Vulture City was developed. At one point, the town had a population of several thousand citizens with amenities including a brothel, mess hall, and post office. Today, visitors can take a guided tour through the beautifully restored buildings of Vulture City and get a first-hand glimpse of life in an Old West mining town. Winter is a great time of year to visit Wickenburg whether for a day trip or a weekend stay, with many fun places to see and experience. Take some time to check out local favorites and be sure to check out LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas of great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! scottsdalenorthnews.com

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal

KNIVES OUT

Knives Out is not your every day, run-ofthe-mill murder mystery. This film makes the normal macabre subject matter feel playful, without losing that “what will happen next” feeling you expect from the genre. At its core, this is a rich story about greed and how it destroys families and those around them. An incredible cast is brought to life in the memorable Thornbery family, with Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas as the outsiders looking in. With its balance of humor and tension, Rian Johnson made one of 2019’s most entertaining films.

THE IRISHMAN

Martin Scorsese has never been better than here. The Irishman delivers all the great traits of traditional mob films, while still managing to bring something new to the table. It delves deep into how crime can kill our family relationships, and the fear of growing old, death and simply being alone. De Niro, Pacino and Pesci are extraordinary, the latter delivering probably his most human performance ever. Scorsese still showcases his “larger than life” style, but with a new vision leaning towards a dour look in production design and cinematography. By the end, you may not like these characters, but you do feel sorry for them.

DOCTOR SLEEP

Mike Flanagan manages to combine Stanley Kubrick’s otherworldly horror with the strangeness of Stephen King’s

NEW RELEASES

writing without losing his own vision. The creepy designs, camerawork, and music complement each other making this film truly Flanagan’s, while still respecting what has come before. Danny, Abra and Rose are all brought to life by amazing performances. The careful balance of gore without becoming exploitative is impressive. Most movies of this genre fall heavily to one side of the blood and guts line or the other. An interesting exploration of addiction is also very nuanced and thought-provoking. Without a doubt, Doctor Sleep is a worthy successor to an iconic film.

JANUARY 3

A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The Last Full Measure

Let me start by saying that Tom Hanks does a great job in a role that he was obviously born to play. Unfortunately, for me, the film just does not work. Fred Rogers seems to be portrayed as a god of “nice guys.” While we all agree that his message of understanding was and is important, it’s one that has already been told. What was needed here was a dive into the real Rogers and what it took to maintain the magic that was “Mr. Rogers.” Yes, this was a film about his interaction with Vogel, but it missed so much going from point A to point B. No one does a 180 that easily. The real Rogers must have opened himself up so much more, exposing his own flaws to help Vogel - that is what we need to see today. Heroes are not born, they are made through hard work.
