ARIZONA STATE PARKS AND TRAILS HOSTS WINTER PHOTO CONTEST Arizona State Parks and Trails is inviting photographers to participate in the Opt Outside Photo Contest. Running through January 15, the contest aims to celebrate the state’s natural beauty and encourage outdoor adventures during the winter months.
Pet owners interested in this free service are encouraged to register online prior to visiting the shelters located at 2500 S. 27th Ave., in Phoenix (West Shelter) and 2630 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., in Mesa (East Shelter).
Open to both amateur and professional photographers aged 18 or older, the contest requires all submissions to be captured within Arizona’s more than 30 state parks. Entrants can compete in five categories: Living Creatures, Friendly Faces, Outdoor Activities, Landscapes, and Arizona History. These categories are designed to spotlight the state’s diverse flora, fauna, and cultural heritage. The competition offers an excellent platform for photographers to exhibit their skills while emphasizing the significance of conserving Arizona’s natural and historical resources. Contestants are encouraged to explore the parks and share their unique perspectives and experiences. Prizes await winners in each category, with a grand prize for the overall contest winner. This grand prize includes a two-night stay in a Pin Drop micro-camper, a cave tour for two at Kartchner Caverns State Park, an Arizona State Parks annual pass, a $15 REI gift card, and an AppreciateAZ gift box. MCACC ROLLS OUT FREE MICROCHIP PROGRAM TO TACKLE STRAY DOG CRISIS In a bid to reduce the number of stray dogs and alleviate shelter overcrowding, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) is offering free microchips for dogs at both its East and West shelter locations through December 29. The service will be available Monday to Friday, from noon to 4 p.m. This year, MCACC has seen a surge in stray dog intakes, totaling nearly 13,000 animals. “With over 900 dogs, we’re out of kennels,” says an MCACC representative. “Most stray dogs lack any form of identification, making it difficult to reunite them with their owners.” The simple procedure of microchipping, which involves implanting a chip between a dog’s shoulder blades, greatly increases the likelihood of reuniting lost

This heartwarming event, spanning three decades, will once again transform their meandering half-mile-long street into a breathtaking spectacle of over 1,000 white luminarias. These incentives have been extended to support Fender’s relocation of its Scottsdale co-headquarters to the new build-tosuit office within the former Paradise Valley mall redevelopment, as well as the company’s commitment to generating an estimated 100 new jobs. Paradise Valley to Shine Brightly with Chanukah Car Parade and Menorah Lighting
THE SPIRIT OF CHANUKAH WILL TAKE TO THE STREETS OF PARADISE VALLEY IN A SPECTACULAR FASHION THIS DECEMBER. Chabad of Paradise Valley, in collaboration with the local community, is organizing a Menorah Car Parade on Monday, Dec. 11. Beginning at 6 p.m., the event will kick off with a special Menorah Lighting ceremony by Town of Paradise Valley Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner, which will be broadcasted to participants in their cars. This event, starting and ending at Paradise Valley Town Hall, 6401 E. Lincoln Dr., will see cars adorned with menorahs and Chanukah-themed decorations parading through the town’s major thoroughfares like Lincoln Drive, Tatum, Invergordon, and Mockingbird. This celebration is not just about lighting the menorah but about spreading the joy and light of Chanukah.
Rabbi Shlomy Levertov of Chabad of Paradise Valley emphasized the significance of this year’s celebration, noting the community’s enthusiasm to come together to celebrate Chanukah with family and friends. The event, which began as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic,

More than 6,500 Hanukkah menorah-topped cars are expected to participate in menorah parades globally, continuing to share the message of hope and joy that Hanukkah brings. W
hen Danny Quinn set out to develop his third restaurant in McCormick Ranch, he focused on Mexican food. The result is El Carbón, which will open in February 2024. “‘Al Carbón’ means in Spanish to grill over natural fuel like charcoal or wood,” he explains. “We’ll grill over a wood-fueled fire.” Quinn, owner and founder of the independent hospitality group F+F Concepts based in Phoenix, says they’ll prepare the proteins such as whole chicken, big chunks of ribeye, and shrimp on skewers on the woodfire grill. Once the food is grilled from the heat from below, causing some surface charring and creating a smokey taste, the proteins will be turned into Mexican cuisine served with homemade tortillas on the side. Quinn has two other restaurants only a few blocks away in McCormick Ranch. The first is Pubblico Italian Eatery, which has been featuring classic, homemade Italian served in a contemporary yet casual setting since opening in 2018 in Phoenix and 2020 in Scottsdale. Rockefeller, which followed two years later, features signature cocktails and an expertly selected wine list in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment where small bites, entrées, and classics meet inventive seafood-centric dishes. The inspiration behind Pubblico? Quinn says it was Italian food because that’s Head Chef Danny Garcia’s specialty. Garcia shares classic old-school Italian with homemade pasta made daily in-house. The contemporary part of Pubblico comes in with its cocktails in the hip, casual setting.
A seafood restaurant was missing in McCormick Ranch, so Rockefeller was born to fill the space. While homemade tortillas at El Carbón and homemade pasta at Pubblico distinguish the restaurants, Rockefeller’s cocktail scene sets it apart. STARTING IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY Working as a busboy in a Santa Barbara, California, family-owned restaurant during his teenage years, Quinn moved up to running the family’s four locations after 12 years in the business. “I intended to do my own thing in the service industry eventually,” says Quinn. “I just didn’t know what yet.” When a friend who owned Cucina Cucina Modern Italian at the Arizona Center called in 2016, Quinn didn’t hesitate to relocate with his wife and young children to “escape the higher cost of living in California and come to the more business-friendly Valley.” While managing and operating Cucina Cucina, Quinn met Head Chef Danny Garcia. “I realized what a gem he was and how good his food was,” Quinn says, adding that when Cucina Cucina closed, it made sense to open a restaurant where Garcia could have complete creative control. A few years later, Pubblico Italian Eatery was born. “We’re taking over McCormick Ranch; I could walk to all three of them, but they’re all different concepts,” he says. However, Quinn says the priorities remain: delicious fare, expertly crafted cocktails, skillfully curated wine lists, and vibrant but laid-back ambiances.

Real Estate Shake Up in the Real Estate World By Realtor Brian Doherty, JD, LLM, ABR, PPS
Y
ou may have read a Missouri jury recently awarded the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and several other real estate companies almost $1.8 billion in damages. In short, the lawsuit alleged that the defendants had industry established policies and practices which resulted in consumers paying inflated commissions.
Many commentators are suggesting that the verdict may trigger a major shakeup in the real estate market, potentially changing the practice of buying and selling homes. More specifically, how homes are listed for sale and how brokerage fees are paid – and who pays them. Due to my legal background, I have a heightened interest in the “nuts and bolts” of important litigation, so please allow me to highlight what I feel are a few important points in this lawsuit. The verdict was the result of a lawsuit home sellers in Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois brought against the nation’s largest professional organization of real estate brokers, the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and several other real estate companies. The suit was Burnett v. National Association of Realtors et al, in which the plaintiffs alleged an NAR requirement known as the cooperative compensation rule amounted to price fixing. As a result of NAR’s policies, the plaintiffs further alleged they were forced to pay excessive commissions to real estate companies when selling their homes. A jury found that the plaintiffs proved their allegations, so they won in the trial court. The NAR disputes the court’s finding and is planning an appeal. It is important to note that several defendants, including my company, RE/ MAX, settled with the plaintiffs prior to the jury verdict. It is also noteworthy that other lawsuits alleging circumstances similar to Burnett have been filed and are yet to be resolved. myhyperlocalnews.com
Interesting topic for sure, but what is the practical effect of this litigation to you, if you are contemplating buying or selling a parcel of residential real estate? As a person with a legal background and years of experience in the real estate world, it is difficult for me to conclude other than that the outcome of the litigation will bring significant permanent changes to the way an agent representing a buyer in a real estate transaction is compensated; AND that commission savings for home sellers will result. How soon these changes will take hold in Arizona remains to be seen, but home sellers right now should be exercising extra caution when choosing a real estate agent to list their property for sale. On the other side of the transaction, home buyers need to understand that the representation provided by their real estate agent as they look for a home to buy will require a formal Buyer’s Broker Agreement, and that their agent’s total compensation may not be paid by the seller. I feel an important outcome of these lawsuits is the reminder that that the buyer’s agent and the listing agent are meant to be on opposite sides of the transaction! It is more important than ever, as you contemplate a real estate transaction, that you to have a knowledgeable and experienced real estate agent on YOUR SIDE protecting YOUR INTERESTS! It can range from someone fraudulently refinancing your home and pocketing the money, accessing the equity with a home equity line of credit, forging a deed, and selling your property to an unsuspecting buyer, or providing fake wiring instructions so the payment for your new home goes to a fake title company. How can we protect against this type of title fraud? Recently the Maricopa County Recorder has set up a program to alert you if a document is being recorded that might affect your title. You can sign up to be notified by email with Title Alert. You can sign up to get an alert regarding your name (it is not specific to your property) at https://recorder.maricopa.gov/ MaricopaTitleAlert/. I highly recommend this to keep on top of what might be happening with your title. Pinal County has a similar alert, but our other counties have not yet put in place an alert system. So, what about a house held in trust? Could having your house in a trust help prevent fraud? Likewise, is a rental property in an LLC better protected from title fraud than one held by an individual? For most fraudsters, the easier it is to defraud you, the better for them. The

Likewise, a fraudster stealing or financing a property in an LLC must again show that they are authorized to act. The lender should be checking the State records to determine who owns the LLC, who is the manager, and asking for documents showing the authority of each person to act. The criminal is likely to move on if you have an LLC as a stumbling block.

IN THEATERS & ON PEACOCK “Five Nights at Freddy’s” A security guard discovers a chilling secret behind the animatronics at a children’s restaurant. While "Five Nights at Freddy’s" boasts a cast of talented actors, the film struggles to deliver a compelling horror experience. The narrative takes an excessive amount of time to progress beyond its initial setup, resulting in a sluggish first act. The remainder of the film seems to experiment with various elements—such as dream sequences, playful encounters with animatronics, and a murder mystery—but these aspects feel underdeveloped. The actors, despite their capabilities, are constrained by the film’s uneven direction and lackluster script. Furthermore, the cameos, although potentially exciting, come across as overly indulgent. This movie, even for younger audiences who might be new to the horror genre, falls short in providing the engaging, thrilling, and genuinely scary experience that can be both entertaining and a suitable introduction to the genre. However, the film primarily suffers from its characters’ lack of depth and rational decision-making, reducing the impact of their fates. While featuring unlikable characters can be an intriguing approach in horror, the film

Nearly three decades after “Seven,” David Fincher and Andrew Kevin Walker reunite to create a film that surprisingly blends dark humor with its narrative. His quest for vengeance is driven more by personal ego and pride than by a pursuit of justice, adding layers to his character. The film’s approach to its antagonist’s targets is noteworthy, featuring a series of mishaps that could be likened to a comedy of errors. These encounters often end unexpectedly, either through accidental circumstances or quick, unceremonious conclusions, deviate from the typical climactic showdowns common in the genre. Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain Shooting Into Your Hips, Back, and Leg (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

I
s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable. Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain. Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery. One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.” You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed. This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse. 2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back. 3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work… 5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked If any of these things have happened to you,
unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica. What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse. Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby. Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved. Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back. Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active. How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
