The Marvelous Marilyn Maye Dazzles at the Musical Instrument Museum

Photos courtesy of the Musical Instrument Museum

ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, THE MIM MUSIC THEATER AT THE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM (MIM) WILL PLAY HOST TO THE GRAMMY-NOMINATED SENSATION MARILYN MAYE. Attendees are in for a timeless performance from this treasure of the jazz and cabaret worlds, who has headlined Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops and received multiple standing ovations at her MIM appearance last year.

Described by the “New York Times” as “still enterprising and still twinkling at nearly 96, the last of a great generation of American Songbook singers,” Marilyn Maye’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Starting her professional singing career at the tender age of nine, she has since dedicated her life to the art of song and performance. Steve Allen was instrumental in bringing her talent to a national audience, leading to her storied tenure on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” where she appeared an astonishing 76 times. As Carson once noted, “And that, young singers, is the way it's done.”

In a glowing tribute, the “New York Observer” encapsulates her artistry: “She can belt, and she can sing ballads with the kind of warmth that makes your heart smile… She’s the real deal.” And she is. Her accolades include having her recording “Too Late

Now” selected by the Arts Council of the Smithsonian for an album representing the 110 best American compositions of the 20th century.

Her dynamism isn’t bound by the studio recordings; her live performances are magnetic. Will Friedwald from the “Wall Street Journal” observed, “Ms. Maye is the only pop-song diva working today who can satisfy both the Broadway and jazz crowds at once. And she does, with an enviable prowess and energy that belies her age, earning her the title of being 'younger than springtime.”

Her upcoming engagement at the MIM Music Theater is poised to be a culmination of all her experiences and achievements. With each song, Maye makes it her own, her off-the-cuff comments drawing hearty laughter from the audience while her backing musicians complement her without overshadowing her brilliance.

But what makes the December 12 performance even more remarkable is the venue — the Musical Instrument Museum, located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, in Phoenix, stands as a testament to the universality of music. Founded by Bob Ulrich, the former CEO of Target Corporation, MIM showcases instruments played daily by people worldwide, emphasizing that music is, indeed, the language of the soul. With over 7,500 instruments from more than 200 countries, MIM is an immersive journey into the world of music.

Visitors don’t just see instruments; they experience them. State-of-the-art interactive media allows one to hear the sounds and witness the instruments being played in their original cultural context. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, diversity, and the profound sensory nature of music. And the MIM Music Theater has had an array of award-winning talent grace its stage—from Don McLean to Sergio Mendes and Judy Collins to Samara Joy and Diane Reeves. Plus, the theater is getting ready to roll out its “Winter Concert Series” later this month, with over 50 shows featuring Americana, folk, jazz, classical, and world music.

Marilyn Maye’s performance at MIM isn’t just another concert. It’s a melding of two musical forces, both dedicated to celebrating the universal resonance and power of song. As MIM aims to deliver an experience that is “enriching, inspiring, interesting, and fun,” Maye is the perfect embodiment of that mission.

In a world often divided, Marilyn Maye's performance at the MIM Music Theater is a beautiful reminder of the power of music to unite, to inspire, and to remind us of our shared language. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tickets are expected to sell quickly for this event. Those eager to be part of this unforgettable evening should call 480-478-6000 or visit mim.org/concerts

the idea for Billie & Lulu’s, I was hesitant. I have always hated clothes shopping, especially at thrift and resale stores. Natasha had a vision and has been one of my biggest confidence boosters; together, we want to help others feel beautiful in their own skin.”

Koffman and co-owner Natasha Beal have invested countless hours in designing an inclusive and empowering shopping space. “Now that we are open, our goal is to create a thriving community where women feel seen and loved, and can find clothes that make you feel beautiful and sexy,” Koffman adds.

Billie & Lulu’s is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. While the store is not yet buying clothing from the public, its curated selection continues to grow in response to community needs.

Small Business Saturday

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, CELEBRATED ON THE SATURDAY FOLLOWING THANKSGIVING, HAS BECOME A VITAL EVENT TO PROMOTES AND SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES ACROSS THE VALLEY. First started in 2010 by American Express, this grassroots movement has grown into a nationwide campaign encouraging consumers to shop small and recognize the unique contributions that local businesses make to their communities and the economy.

One of the most significant aspects of Small Business Saturday how it fosters community ties. Our small businesses reflect the character and values of the neighborhoods they serve. Typically run by individuals who live in the community, understand its needs, and are often invested in its well-being. By supporting these businesses, consumers not only get unique products and personalized

service, but they also help bolster the local economy. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, for every $100 spent at a local business, approximately $68 stays in the community, compared to only $43 when spent at national chains.

Economically, small businesses also play a crucial role in job creation. They account for nearly two-thirds of net new jobs created in a community each year. By participating in Small Business Saturday, consumers contribute directly to job stability and growth within their neighborhoods. The event serves as a reminder that when individuals support local businesses, they help sustain livelihoods and foster economic resilience.

Moreover, Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services. Many small businesses

offer unique items that cannot be found in larger retail stores, providing consumers with distinctive shopping experiences. This variety not only enriches the local marketplace but also promotes creativity and innovation.

Local artisans, craftspeople, and service providers benefit from the heightened visibility and customer engagement that comes with this dedicated shopping day.

The day also serves as an essential marketing opportunity for small businesses, many of which operate on limited advertising budgets. The collective momentum generated by Small Business Saturday helps to amplify their presence in the market.

Social media campaigns, community events, and special promotions draw attention and encourage foot traffic.

Many small businesses take this opportunity to build relationships with customers, offering personalized

shopping experiences that larger retailers often cannot match.

Furthermore, Small Business Saturday aligns with a broader movement toward conscious consumerism. As shoppers become increasingly aware of the impact of their spending habits, many are prioritizing local over national. The event highlights the importance of making thoughtful purchasing decisions, encouraging consumers to consider where their money goes and its potential impact on their community.

Small Business Saturday is more than just a shopping day; it is a celebration of your community, creativity, and economic resilience. By choosing to shop small, you play a vital role in sustaining local economies and nurturing the unique character of their neighborhoods. This November, make a commitment to support your local businesses—not just on Small Business Saturday, but year-round.

The Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak Purchased by Pivotal Group

Phoenix based Pivotal Group has purchased the 50 year old Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak for $100 million. Pivotal plans major renovations to elevate and modernize the 20-acre resort which sits on one of the best locations in the Valley.

The resort is part of Phoenix history, welcoming guests since its opening in 1977. Blending desert views, luxury lifestyle, and Arizona cultural traditions, the resort has grown alongside the city with new names, ownerships changes, and a slew of renovations. The resort is home to the Hole In The Wall restaurant (which was part of a dude ranch in the 1940’s) and a few blocks from Aunt Chilada’s restaurant whose main dining room was a general store dating back to the 1890’s. More recently, President Barack Obama stayed at the resort during a 2015 trip to the Valley.

Pivotal Group plans to build on this

history by undertaking a careful twoand-a-half-year renovation that will include:

• Upgrading and complete renovation of more than 430 suite style rooms

• Construction of a new adult pool

• Creating a new elevated spa

• A new fitness center

• Additional dining options

• Creation of a new outdoor gathering and event space

• A complete modernization and upgrading of the entire facility

The group plans to keep the resort open during the entire process so that guests and visitors can still experience the existing historic luxury. The Pivotal Group is owned/operated by local Phoenix family the Najafis. The family has long been known as meaningful contributors to the Phoenix community and look forward to continuing that with this latest venture.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “The Committments” or “The Blues Brothers,” both classics, they’re funny and feature soul music.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… out in the world on an adventure and running a business! Monopoly was my favorite game.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… something Irish to get a sing-song going, maybe the “The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee” because I am from Cork or bring out a bit of Gaeilge singing Mo Gheile Mear.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my kids. I do take the role model role seriously and do my best to keep a balance of working, being involved in the local community and being available at home. It’s not always easy but I keep on trying.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… definitely something the kids did… they are close in age and have fun together.

THE PERFECT DAY IS… a Saturday, temperatures in the 70s, exercise at the Village Club or a hike in the close by Phoenix Nature Preserve, brunch at Lon’s, followed by both kids napping in the afternoon, an early evening family cycle around the neighborhood and dinner, live music and dancing with good friends.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Their work is cutting edge. We are lucky to have such a talented and growing team local to Phoenix. We now have a burgeoning world class institute for neurological and neurosurgical treatment and research in children on our doorstep. It benefits us all, especially the kids who need it most and we should be proud of it. It’s growing and building year over year.

MY LIFE IS… busy and interesting! I have always kept an open mind and embraced opportunities and new experiences. It has served me well.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my engagement ring and a piece of furniture made by my grandfather.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… learning or practicing a new skill. For the past few years, I have been learning to ski better, surf, sail and speak Spanish (all the S’s). I am an adult learner and basically staying a couple of steps ahead of my already accomplished children.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… blossom where you are planted.

Kids' Corner Bubbling Brew

Transform

dry ice and dish soap into a magical bubbling potion

that’s perfect for curious young scientists and wizards alike!

Get ready to mix some magic with this bubbling potion experiment! Using dry ice and a few household items, you can create a frothy, foggy brew that looks straight out of a wizard’s workshop. Perfect for kids who love hands-on science with a magical twist!

WHAT YOU NEED

• A cookie sheet or cake pan

• A tall glass of water

• Dry ice (about 2 pounds)

• Liquid dish soap

• Food coloring

MIXING THE MAGIC

1. Set Up Your Station: Place a tall glass of water in the center of your cookie sheet or cake pan. This will catch any

overflowing bubbles, keeping the mess to a minimum.

2. Add the Dry Ice: Carefully drop a small piece of dry ice into the glass of water. Instantly, you’ll see a foggy mist forming as the dry ice turns into carbon dioxide gas. Note: Avoid touching dry ice directly with your skin! It’s so cold that it can cause burns similar to frostbite, so always use gloves or tongs to handle it safely.

3. Color the Potion: Add a few drops of food coloring to the water.

4. Create the Bubbles: Squeeze some liquid dish soap into the water. In moments, bubbles will form, filling with the foggy gas and overflowing from the glass.

5. Enjoy the Fun: Watch the bubbles grow and spill over the sides, then pop them to release the mist inside!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MAGIC

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, which must be kept below -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit to remain in its solid form—that’s seriously cold! What makes dry ice unique is that it undergoes sublimation, meaning it changes directly from a solid to a gas without turning into liquid first. When you add dry ice to water, it releases carbon dioxide gas, which creates the fog you see. Adding dish soap traps the gas in bubbles, causing them to froth and foam. This fun bubbling effect is a great way to explore concepts like sublimation, density, and gas formation! It's also a bit of Halloween-style fun.

HELPING KIDS WIN AT LIFE

KidStrong’s two new North Valley locations help build strong kids and families.

Local dad Alex Weisman and his wife Marci are passionate about finding fun, fitness-oriented activities for their two young children, ages 10 and 7. When they didn’t find quite what they were looking for, they decided to invest in the popular KidStrong brand and bring fun and fitness to the Valley through KidStrong North Scottsdale, which opened this past spring, and KidStrong Paradise Valley, which opened just last month. The two locations have proven to be a hit with their own children and families across the North Valley.

“The KidStrong brand started nearly 10 years ago in 2015 and now has over 100 locations across the U.S.,” Weisman says. “KidStrong is a science-based program that helps parents build strong, confident, high-character kids. It’s well thought out and more than 50,000 kids go to KidStrong across the country each week. Our Gilbert location of KidStrong has been open for three years and we opened our two here in the North Valley this year.”

As the owner of all three Arizona KidStrong locations and the state’s area developer, Weisman explains that, “Our program focuses on character, physical and brain development through weekly 45-minute, age-based classes.” There are also at-home activities available on an app for KidStrong attendees’ parents and caregivers.

“At KidStrong, we have a three-pillar approach: Physical, Character and Brain,” he explains. “The physical is the exercise, which is always fun and based on scientific research. The character part is about soft skills kids need to learn, including proper social greetings with handshake and eye contact. And, the brain portion is comprised of a lot of brain games, such as learning ASL [American Sign Language].”

The KidStrong signature affirmation is, “I am strong. I am brave. I can do this.” Weisman often hears his own children recite the affirmations to themselves outside of KidStrong classes.

Why should parents and caregivers consider KidStrong? “We reimagine what parenting could be like without the stress and worry that comes with the desire to raise the best humans possible. We have clean, modern centers, world-class coaches and a commitment to helping parents raise awesome kids,” according to the KidStrong company.

“Our 45-minute weekly classes challenge families to live out the monthly KidStrong Superpower with brain boosts, fitness challenges and social skills training. Because our curriculum is action-packed, organized and fun, you won’t want to just drop your kids off and run. KidStrong parents love to hang out at class to see their kid thrive.”

For families who are nervous about the athletic portion of the KidStrong mission, Weisman says that the program is tailored to be welcoming to all kids no matter their athletic abilities.

“KidStrong is an athletic play program, but it’s more than that,” Weisman affirms. “Kids who are natural athletes will have fun but so will kids who aren’t necessarily athletic. It’s about having fun, moving your body, and boosting your brain power and soft skills. We welcome all kids.”

With the two North Valley locations having just opened, Weisman says that the local community has been welcoming.

“The community reception to our North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley locations has been great,” he says. “Both locations are growing really nicely, and we are just trying to get the word out there that we’re here and, for families who are curious, we offer free trials so they can see if it’s a fit.”

When asked what made KidStrong stand out the most, Weisman shares, “KidStrong is a parent-based program; they are just as excited about the program as the kids. We offer a whole child approach to children’s development that has proven successful for thousands of children and their families for nearly a decade. We’re so proud to have brought KidStrong to Arizona.”

Arizona’s Largest Artist Studio Tour, HIDDEN IN THE HILLS, Returns in November

Arizona’s largest and longest-running artist studio tour, Hidden in the Hills, takes place during the last two weekends of November: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22, 23 & 24 and Nov. 29, 30 & Dec. 1. Coordinated by the nonprofit Sonoran Arts League, this year’s free, self-guided tour features 179 artists at 44 studios throughout North Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree.

Ray Richardson’s wood sculpture, “Island,” graces the cover of this year’s popular four-color, glossy artist directory. The colorful piece depicts a cactus wren starting to leap into the air from a prickly pear cactus.

CREATIVITY TAKES FLIGHT THROUGH WOOD

Growing up in northwest Connecticut, Ray Richardson was enthralled with birds at a young age. He loved spending time outdoors, and his grandmother fueled his interest through nature books and magazines. She also introduced him to comic books, where he was captivated by the idea of using lines, shapes, and colors to tell stories. Later, after serving in the Navy, Richardson attended community

college and found his passion for fine art. While he excelled in oil painting, he began working in carpentry, which opened the door to woodworking.

He began carving birds in the early 2000s while working outside on a client project.

“The property had a beautiful garden filled with hummingbirds and they would buzz me as I was carving,” Ray Richardson said. “I was so enthralled that I started wondering if I could capture the moment in wood. I believe that was the catalyst moment for me.”

Richardson’s “Island” measures 15" wide x 9" deep x 19.75" high. Much of the piece is made of maple, including the base. His initial inspiration came from encountering cactus wrens shortly after moving to Arizona in 2015. He sketched his ideas, but it wasn't until years later, during the pandemic, that he began sculpting “Island.”

“As I was working on the piece, the shape of the base suggested the idea of a landmass to me. That visual

idea blended with the deep isolation of those days. I would look out of my garage while I was carving and see my neighborhood...somehow the houses across the street seemed so far away. I think that the wren leaping from the cactus signified my desire to connect with a world that was still turning as it always had, but felt remote,” he said.

Richardson will exhibit and sell his work at Roxanne Eklund’s Studio No. 31 in Cave Creek. Eklund is a fiber and textile artist who is also new to the art studio tour.

This year’s artist directory also will feature five diverse artworks on the back cover. The artists featured include mixed media sculptors Terry and Marilyn Alexander, mixed media painter Nancy Pendleton, abstract landscape painter Scott Rispin, jeweler Celest Michelotti and oil painter Marless Fellows.

Avoiding the Pain of Probate

You’ve probably been told by friends or advisors to avoid probate at all costs. Probate is the court proceeding filed in order to appoint an executor – called a personal representative in Arizona – to be able to access a deceased person’s bank accounts and assets and settle their estate. You will likely have to file probate if your deceased loved one has no Will. However, the estate of a person that has only a Will is also very likely to end up in probate court. That’s because a Will doesn’t enable the personal representative named in the Will to act for them. The court still has to formally appoint your personal representative before they can begin to work on settling the estate. The Will is just directions to the court on what you want the court to order as to your estate.

Another reason to avoid probate is that it’s a public proceeding. I can call and for just a few dollars have a copy of your Will by the end of the day. I can go look at the court file and get a list of the people who are included – with their addresses. In many cases, a list of assets must also be filed. Wow. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want people to be able to get information about my affairs that easily!

Another aspect of the public nature of probate are the predators actively

looking at case files and approaching the family. One client recently said they had numerous letters from people wanting to buy her deceased mother’s house, and that one real estate agent actually came knocking on the door when they didn’t respond to his calls.

If privacy is important to you, then you want to avoid probate by using a Revocable Living Trust for your planning. The Trust avoids probate. Your named successor trustee does not have to be appointed by the court. The Trustee is able to access the accounts and property owned in the trust right away. The Trust is private too, there is no need to file anything with the court if it is put together properly.

On your death, your heirs will need to settle your estate, and unless you have the right plan in place, you may be placing a heavy burden on them. The best way to make it less burdensome is to use a Revocable Living Trust for your estate planning. A trust isn’t just for the wealthy. Everyday people who want to make sure their affairs are in order after death can easily do so with a trust.

If you are ready to put a proper estate plan in place – one that avoids probate and makes it easier for someone to manage your assets if you are incapacitated – give our office a call at 602-375-6752, and book an initial consult with me or our other attorney, Allison Gloss.

Why Your Shoulder Hurts At Night (and How to Finally Get Relief)

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

You’ve seen everyone for shoulder pain, and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…

When you’re experiencing shoulder pain all day, it’s no surprise that you would turn to sleep for relief. But when sleeping seated in a chair becomes as bad as lying on your side, it’s time to solve the mystery of your shoulder pain.

Unfortunately, for many on the quest to conquering discomfort, their only option from healthcare providers is to

“wait until it gets worse.” Here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can actually get relief now.

SHOULDER PAIN WHILE SLEEPING

Irene, who had been dealing with shoulder pain for six months, came to us for this exact reason. She didn’t want to resort to temporary cortisone injections, daily sleeping pills, or pain medication. She wanted a long-term solution.

“The worst part was not being able to sleep at night.” Despite three months of physical therapy, her improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also diagnosed her with a rotator cuff injury, but told her she needed to wait for it to get worse to consider surgery.

GETTING RELIEF AND FINALLY SOME SLEEP

Recognizing Irene’s frustration, we swiftly took action, confirming her rotator cuff tear, and identifying a second injury in her shoulder that was contributing to her pain.

We explained to Irene how she had fallen into what we call “The Gap” in conventional medicine, and how regenerative medicine bridges this gap. Irene chose to partner with us and underwent two treatments. In just four weeks, her pain had improved significantly, allowing her to finally get a good night’s sleep.

HOW OUR DEEP DIVE BRIDGES “THE GAP”

Irene’s story is not uncommon; applying a one-size-fits-all approach left her without clear guidance or solutions. You don’t need to wait until it gets worse!

With our comprehensive Deep Dive (which includes our Pain Profile, 32-Point Shoulder Inspection, Precision Shoulder Scan, and Diagnostic Mapping Technique — all of which were used to confirm Irene’s pain and guide her treatment strategy), we’ll not only get YOU an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you!), but will also provide you with a personalized treatment

plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.

Hospice of the Valley Ranked 3rd in Nation for Quality Care

We are extremely humbled to learn that Hospice of the Valley has been ranked third in the entire country for providing quality care to patients and families. A new study ranking the 50 largest U.S. hospices was recently published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. The study, “Caregiver and Employee Experience Among Big Hospices,” looked at three quality indicators: Medicare surveys of families assessing patient care and support; caregiver satisfaction and employee satisfaction ratings.

It is an honor to be so highly regarded by families who have entrusted us to care for their loved ones. This is a true testament to the specialized care our staff provide each and every day. They are passionate about this important work and dedicated to our mission — bringing comfort, dignity and compassionate care to our community.

This comprehensive study also found that even though 74% of the market is dominated by for-profit hospices, the top 10 highest-quality hospices in the nation are all nonprofits. Hospice of the Valley is the only nonprofit hospice in Maricopa County and has always cared for all in need, regardless of insurance or financial resources. This study shows that caregivers expressed higher satisfaction with nonprofits, and nonprofit hospice employees felt a deeper commitment to delivering exceptional care.

Our clinical teams cared for nearly 28,000 patients and their families last year in Maricopa and northern Pinal counties and Tucson. Since we were founded in 1977, we have continued to expand programs to meet evolving needs and bridge gaps in the healthcare system. We are the only Arizona hospice providing in-home primary care for frail and vulnerable patients;

in-home supportive care at earlier stages of illness; and hospice care for children and adults in the comfort of home. And our innovative Dementia Care and Education Campus helps improve quality of life for people living with all types and stages of the condition and supports their caregivers. Families can always speak to a nurse 24/7 and they derive comfort in knowing we are there for them — any time of day or night.

It has been our privilege to serve our community these past 47 years. We are grateful for the employees who have made us Arizona’s leading hospice provider and for the patients and families who choose Hospice of the Valley to walk alongside them during this meaningful time.

We are here to support all those in need. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at (602) 530-6900 or hov.org.

Charity HALO Celebrates 30 Years of Saving Lives

It all started 30 years ago with one adoption and a hope to stop the endless euthanasia of so many healthy animals in Maricopa County. One adoption became hundreds, and hundreds became thousands. Since then, more than 85,000 dogs and cats have received medical care, shelter, and placement into loving homes. Without HALO’s volunteers, medical care partners, and donors, none of this would have ever been achievable.

This year marks HALO’s 30th anniversary, and they need your support to make it their best year yet! They aim to raise $30,000 to continue their vital work in the community. Thanks to a generous donor, every dollar you give through November 15 will be TRIPLED, up to $30,000! That means your contribution can have three times the impact for animals in need.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP:

• Donate: Every dollar counts! Your gift will be tripled, turning $10 into $30, $50 into $150, and so on.

• Spread the Word: Share HALO’s mission with friends and family. The more people know, the more animals they can help!

• Get Involved: Join HALO at upcoming events or volunteer your time to make a difference. Visit halorescue. org/volunteer

“Together, we can ensure that more animals live happy, healthy lives. Let’s make this milestone year a memorable one for HALO and the pets we love,” said Heather Allen, President and CEO of HALO Animal Rescue.

U.S. Egg Partners with The Foster Alliance for Pajama and Toy Drive

U.S. Egg is proud to announce that it is teaming up with The Foster Alliance this November for its annual toy and pajama drive benefiting children in foster care.

The Foster Alliance is the largest organization in Arizona that provides beds, cribs, clothing, toiletries, birthday gifts, holiday toys, backpacks with school supplies, licensing safety items, and more to 12,000+ children in state and tribal foster care.

“We’re excited to partner with The Foster Alliance again this year to support boys and girls in foster care,” said George Gebran, COO and co-owner of U.S. Egg. “Our toy and pajama drive has become something we truly look forward to, as giving back to the children in our community is a top priority for us. We encourage everyone to join us in making a positive impact on the lives of these children.”

For the entire month of November, all Valley U.S. Egg locations will be collecting new toys and pajamas for

donation to The Foster Alliance. The nonprofit stated that its priority items are pajamas for preschool to teenage-aged children, new toys, diapers and hygiene items. Arizonans are invited to come enjoy a delicious breakfast or lunch at the restaurant while also providing support and kindness to foster families before the holiday season.

“The holiday season is a time when children hope and wish for a special surprise chosen especially for them. At The Foster Alliance we realize our amazing kids should also receive what they have always wished for. We cannot fulfill all of these wishes alone,” said Maureen Noe, President & CEO of The Foster Alliance. “We are grateful to our corporate and community partners like U.S. Egg. We count on this toy and pajama drive so we can show Arizona’s foster children that they are important to our community.”

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“A

Different Man”

After a surgery that fixes his facial deformity, a man finds a play about his story colliding with his life.

A very funny film about oneself and perception, with Sebastian Stan’s greatest performance to date. Watching his character, Edward, bottle up his insecurities before they leak out, whether it’s in basic conversations or his own quiet parts, is truly great. All the while, Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson’s supporting work show how versatile the two are as they enhance the grounded but odd world it has. From a filmmaking perspective it’s stunning, some great lighting here to add to the mood of the film. That said, the movie does end on a rather strange note, a result of the film perhaps not stopping at the right moment. Still, it doesn’t ruin what was an hour and forty minutes of unnerving and thoughtful humor.

“Saturday Night”

The chaos surrounding the 90 minutes leading up to the first Saturday Night Live episode.

One of the most self-congratulatory pieces of film in a while, one that can’t bother to actually explore the people behind SNL beyond an easy and consumable level. There’s no examination of how Lorne Michaels sees his cast or the actual impact the show had for its time period, just about how wacky everything is. This is a highly talented cast but most of them don’t get to do much with the material given, just imitations of these people. The only exceptions are Cory Michael Smith, Lamorne Morris and Willem Dafoe who give the film energy. The most insulting thing is how the film builds tension about whether the show will come together - not because we know it will, but because it acts like these future stars may not be. It goes for the easy option.

ON PARAMOUNT+

“Apartment 7A”

A young dancer finds herself at the center of a horrifying conspiracy when she moves into a new apartment.

It’s an enormous task to follow up a classic like Rosemary’s Baby, but that’s still no excuse to deliver such a dull waste of time. Apartment 7A offers nothing new as a prequel or as its own experience, more a retread with less interesting moviemaking and with nothing new to say from 56 years ago. It moves at a snail’s pace, with nothing of interest happening beyond odd antics and the occasional jump scare. The actors do their honest best with the material but are unable to rise above it. There’s little that makes the film even feel like a distinct and new entry from its predecessor. It’s as if it was its own script that was slapped into the universe as a quick cash-grab.

ON APPLE TV+

“Wolfs”

Two lone-wolf fixers find themselves forced into the same job together.

Clooney and Pitt’s long awaited reunion lacks energy and personality for a stereotypical streamer movie. There is no real movement to the film, just events happening for the sake of the plot rather than any real story motivation, and in a world that feels

dead (which is odd for a city like New York). It would be made up for if the main duo were as fun as expected, but the script and direction give neither much to do which results in the two seeming to be bored throughout the film. Ironically, for a movie all about unexpected twists and turns, it’s very predictable in terms of filmmaking and plot. A disposable film, one that will be forgotten about by the time you read this.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And

How To Get Rid Of It For

Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.

This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:

1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

Good)

4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work…

5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked

If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica. What to Avoid

Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
