Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Veterans Day, this much-awaited event promises an ensemble of vintage vehicular marvels, ranging from pre-1983 sports and race cars to antique and special interest vehicles. Motorcycle enthusiasts won’t be left out, as the show also includes a lineup of classic two-wheelers.

Valley’s Push Towards Cooler Pavements: Desert Ridge Marketplace Leads the Way with ASU Graphic courtesy of city of Phoenix As temperatures continue to rise, the city of Phoenix and prominent retail spaces are exploring innovative ways to combat the heat. Leading this charge is Desert Ridge Marketplace, which recently unveiled its collaboration with Arizona State University on the “Cool Pavement Project,” aiming to mitigate the heat emanating from concrete and asphalt.

The property owner, Vestar, has committed to layering 63,000 feet of a novel coating, CoolSeal, across the marketplace’s northside roads, sidewalks, and parking areas. Produced by GuardTop, CoolSeal is designed distinctively to reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it, differing fundamentally from traditional asphalt and concrete. Introduced to several Phoenix residential streets back in 2020, streets adorned with this innovative coat recorded temperatures averaging 10.5 to 12 degrees cooler during midday compared to the standard asphalt.

Desert Ridge’s pioneering project grants ASU researchers an unparalleled opportunity to study the effect of CoolSeal in expansive commercial areas.

While the research is ongoing, some results are evident. ASU’s data suggests that while humans may experience a slight increase in heat due to surface reflectivity, akin to walking on a typical concrete sidewalk, the overall benefits of cool pavement could be significant in terms of energy conservation, water savings, and potential health outcomes.

Hidden in the Hills: Arizona’s Premier Artist Studio Tour Returns for its 27th Year!

ARIZONA’S LARGEST AND LONGEST-RUNNING ARTIST STUDIO TOUR, HIDDEN IN THE HILLS, RETURNS FOR ITS 27TH YEAR DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS OF NOVEMBER: FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17 TO 19 AND NOVEMBER 24 TO 26. This year’s free, self-guided tour features 164 artists at 41 studios throughout North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree.

Two Scottsdale artists have their work featured in the event’s four-color, glossy artist directory. Ceramic artist Sharon Albrektsen’s fanciful sculpture, “Bee Free,” graces the directory cover. The surreal piece depicts a fairytale-like woman setting a bee free. And glass artist Jacki Cohen’s bright, colorful “Blaze” wall panel is featured on the directory’s back cover.

A NARRATIVE ARTIST WHO LOVES CLAY Sharon Albrektsen grew up in an artistic family who encouraged her to explore her imagination. Being dyslexic, she struggled to read, but she thrived in her art classes. She earned her BA and MA from Adams State College in Colorado, and MFA at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She owned and operated a coffee

house, and she also taught art in grades from kindergarten through college.

“I am a narrative artist who is in love with clay,” Albrektsen says. “Clay gives me the placidity to capture my thoughts when it is wet and permanency of the form when fired. My work is layered with meanings of who I am now and who I was.”

Using borrowed symbols from the Christian religion, other cultures visited in her travels, and those from history, she combines all to make her own personal symbolism.

“I love color, vibrancy, and bold design. These are what ignite my soul and fuel my spirit,” she says.

In addition to incorporating circles and other symbols into her work that celebrate life, she often mixes in dichroic glass, which is a metallic glass that sparkles and shines.

BY FAMED MUSICIAN DUKE ELLINGTON, BILLIE HOLIDAY IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL JAZZ VOCALISTS OF ALL TIME. Now Valley audiences can see a remarkable recreation of one of Holiday’s last performances before her untimely death.

“Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” is onstage now through Nov. 26 at The Phoenix Theatre Company in Central Phoenix. The production kicks off the 104th season of shows at Arizona’s oldest producing theatre.

In the Tony-award nominated musical, audiences get an up close and intimate look at the iconic vocalist. The show takes place in 1959 in a seedy Philadelphia bar just four months before Holliday’s tragic death. “Lady Day” includes soulful and heart-wrenching songs from her extraordinary music catalog and touches on her battles with alcoholism and drug abuse in her later years.

Holiday’s canon includes recognizable songs like “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.” The one-woman show features a live band on stage and Yolanda London as Holiday. This is not the first time London has portrayed Holiday at The Phoenix Theatre Company. She was part of the heralded 2016 production of “Lady Day” and has since played Holiday in productions across the country including shows in Alabama and Pennsylvania.

This will be her fifth time in the role.

“I would definitely say I feel connected to Billie Holiday in many ways,” says London. “I find her music incredibly moving and emotional. I also feel for her. This production is especially poignant for London who will be performing the story at the same age Holiday was when she died. “I think, now more than ever, I’m ready to tell her story,” she says.

In her main stage directorial debut at The Phoenix Theatre Company, Chanel Bragg feels a tremendous responsibility to share the highs and lows of the prolific vocalist’s life.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to tell this story and to pay a great deal of respect and reverence to the legend with introspection through the Black female lens,” says Bragg. “I have always held a deeply personal connection to Billie Holiday and the universality of her story of both joy and immense pain. I hope this production will leave audiences as enamored with her as I have been since I was a young child.”

Bragg started her professional career at The Phoenix Theatre Company in 2010 when she made her stage debut in “Hairspray.” She has since performed in countless shows at the theatre and co-founded two initiatives: The Soul of Broadway performance troupe in 2009 and The United Colours of Arizona Theatre in 2016 with an emphasis to inspire diversity, equity, and true inclusion in the local arts community.

“There are a lot of strong emotions in this show - love, pain, and the ability of people to lean on each other when times are tough,” Bragg adds. “Billie was not afraid to take risks. She was a truth teller, a disrupter, and an unmatched artist. I am proud to be able to bring her story to Valley audiences again.”

I

n North Phoenix, a young boy named Carter Cunnius is turning his past challenges into a mission of joy for other kids. This 8-year-old, with twinkling eyes and an unstoppable spirit, is the mastermind behind a heartwarming toy drive that is making waves in the community and brightening the days of children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Carter’s journey began in a way none of us would want.

When he was only 4 years old, his doctors shared the news that he had a type of cancer known as leukemia.

His days became filled with hospital visits, treatments, and many moments that required extraordinary bravery.

After a challenging battle of two and a half years, Carter triumphantly emerged, being declared cancer-free one year ago.

Carter, now a third grader at Norterra Canyon School, is inspiring not just adults, but his classmates too.

Together, they’ve been gathering toys by the hundreds, establishing a tower that symbolizes hope, kindness, and youthful solidarity. This year marks the third of Carter’s initiative, and it’s not just about collecting toys, but also about remembering and honoring friends made along the way. Last year’s Page 14 drive paid tribute to a young friend, Junior, who sadly lost his fight with cancer.

However, his experience in the hospital wasn’t forgotten.

During one particularly tough week, when an infection kept him bedridden, Carter experienced the boredom and sadness that can come with long hospital stays. A small box of LEGOs, which became a source of creativity and escape, sparked an idea in his thoughtful mind.

“My mom and I built it and took it apart so many times. I was so sad, and my mom kept making up games for us to play. I still had a lot of unopened gifts at home and told my mom that I wanted to donate them so no kid would feel the way I did during that week,” says Carter.

In Carter’s words, the best part about organizing the toy drive each year is “knowing kids will feel loved and it will take their mind off of what they’re going through.”

And his top pick for a universal toy? LEGOs, as he believes “everyone loves LEGOs!”

That memory led to the birth of Carter’s toy drive, which kicked off in September 2020. With an objective to ensure no child felt the loneliness and boredom he once did, Carter, along with the support of his community, started collecting toys. His endeavor began to fill trucks and cars with toys destined for children in the hospital.

Busting Myths About Estate Planning

here is lots of confusion about estate planning, what wills and trusts do, and what the law provides. Let’s bust a few of those persistent myths!

MYTH 1: MY WILL TRANSFERS MY PROPERTY TO MY HEIRS AT DEATH. Wrong! Your will is a document that tells the court who to appoint as your executor and to direct the executor where and how to distribute your assets.

A will alone won’t deed your house to your children or cause your bank to give the funds in your bank account to your heirs. Instead, before your executor can even touch these assets, they are forced to file paperwork with the court to start the probate. Then they must file reports with the court as they take care of your estate. This probate proceeding is expensive and time consuming – and it means that your will and anything else filed is now available for the public to see.

MYTH 2: ESTATE PLANNING IS NOT NECESSARY UNLESS I AM OLD OR RICH: What we mean when we say “estate planning” is planning for your assets whether you have a lot or a little. Even your 18-year-old has an estate – a bank account, the paycheck their employer owes, their laptop, car, and other personal property. Your “estate” is simply what you own. If you don’t prepare any plan, the state of Arizona has dictated what happens. It will likely also require

probate, and it may not result in who you want being in charge, and it may not dispose of your assets the way you would like.

The truth is, if you have assets, you should have a written estate plan. It may not be as elaborate as Bill Gates’ plan or be used as soon as your 90-year-old grandfather’s plan, but it is still important to have a plan you put together.

MYTH 3: A REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST IS TOO COMPLICATED FOR MY SIMPLE ESTATE: The revocable living trust simplifies things. It’s easy for you to use, and for someone else to assist you if you need help managing your finances during your life. That’s right – the revocable living trust operates to help you during your life and not just at your death.

During your life, you own your property in the trust, but you still own everything, and file taxes just the same as always.

You have complete control over your assets, just as you did before. But if you become disabled or incapacitated, your designated successor trustee can step in to help you, and on your death, the successor trustee distributes your property without any court involvement and distributes it the way you have directed in your trust. The revocable living trust is an easy way to provide for the future while maintaining control over your assets.

“No One Will Save You” A young woman's home is invaded by extraterrestrials.

When a genre film addresses trauma while staying true to its genre elements, it's a treat, and “No One Will Save You” accomplishes this. For 90 minutes, it lives up to the phrase "all killer, no filler" with an active series of escalating set pieces and tension. In a movie with almost no dialogue, Kaitlyn Denver and director/ writer Brian Duffield do an impressive job of letting the actions speak for themselves while depicting the isolation our character feels. The big reveal is slightly half-baked and causes an odd ending, but not in a way that ruins the movie.

Combine this with some stellar creature effects, and you have a solid, exciting, and even scary creature feature.

IN THEATERS “The Creator” A soldier in the near future becomes the unintentional protector of a robot girl who is more powerful than it seems.

“The Creator” is unfortunately a victim of bad timing given the current debate around AI, and it risks having its message being misinterpreted. Fundamentally, Gareth Edwards uses it as a metaphor for U.S. militarization in events such as the Vietnam War, and how it executes that will be up to the beholder, though I found it enthralling. Much of that is thanks to Edwards' direction, which brings a combination of technology and natural beauty to its world, and the lead performances of John David Washington (with his dry charisma bringing heart to the character of Joshua) and newcomer Madeline Yuna Voyles (incredibly gifted at delivering a balance between emotional and robotic). I also greatly appreciate the tone of the film.

It manages to stay true to its general message and idea without falling apart, though at times the imagery can risk coming off as exploitative or empty. It also mostly underuses its supporting cast, aside from Ken Watanabe's stellar work.

Ultimately, “The Creator” still comes through as a breath of fresh air in the modern blockbuster sphere that shows what director Edwards is capable of.

None of the five shorts have anything to say about the 1980s or the sort of fetishization the decade has received in recent years. Nothing about the shorts makes them particularly '80s, aside from the aesthetic choices in the overarching story. This movie could be set in any decade, and it would change little. As stated before, this isn't exactly a scary movie but instead just bores, which is the worst thing you can do in this genre. Not one of the ideas is given the time to explore; it just shows up and then is done with. By the end of the movie, you just feel like you wasted time.

It's one last gift from a master of filmmaking.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain Shooting Into Your Hips, Back, and Leg (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain?

You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain.

You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints.

Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.

This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica.

Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change?
