It is suggested that applicants review information about the Planning Commission and view meeting videos online at paradisevalleyaz.gov/planningcommission. This will provide insight into the duties of the commission and types of cases it considers. In summary, the Planning Commission is a group of seven residents appointed by the town council. They provide recommendations on a wide array of land-use issues including subdivision plats, lot splits, zoning ordinance amendments, special use permits (SUPs), and general plan amendments. The Planning Commission is also the primary entity responsible for long-term, comprehensive planning and often acts as the advisory committee on long-term plans. Service on the Planning Commission requires a significant time commitment. In addition to two meetings a month lasting more than two hours each, it is often necessary for commissioners to conduct site visits and invest time preparing for meetings. Commissioners also serve six-month rotating terms on the Hillside Building Committee (one twohour meeting per month).

City News Arizona Live Music Cooperative Finds Vibrant

New Home at Aunt Chilada’s

Photos courtesy of Arizona Live Music Cooperative

AS THE AUTUMN BREEZE SETS IN, THERE’S A FRESH MELODY IN THE AIR! The beloved Arizona Live Music Cooperative (AZLMC) has moved to a new address, and it’s creating quite a buzz in the Phoenix music scene. Having made their transition to Aunt Chilada’s on September 18, the cooperative has found a new rhythm in their new abode.

Located at 7330 N. Dreamy Draw Dr., in Phoenix, Aunt Chilada’s isn’t just any venue. A cherished, family-owned establishment that has served the Phoenix community for decades, it boasts a sprawling outdoor patio and multiple rooms. And while patrons can enjoy the famous Aunt Chilada menu and beverages, AZLMC ensures its primary focus remains – providing a dedicated listening room segregated from the main restaurant.

Speaking of community, AZLMC’s commitment isn’t just to tunes and notes. As an Arizona nonprofit, they’ve managed to donate thousands to various noble causes in Phoenix, including Studio 164, Shoebox Ministries, Grounded 32, and The Alice Cooper Teen Center, among others. And while a $5 donation from patrons is always welcome, it’s never obligatory. The gathered funds go into maintaining the open mic nights, with surpluses generously forwarded to other deserving charities.

The recent launch of AZLMC at Aunt Chilada’s wasn’t just successful; it was monumental. Packed to the rafters, the night witnessed enthralling open mic performances, and a standout concert featuring Annie Moscow and the Cool People. The flawless execution, achieved in less than a week, speaks volumes of the relentless efforts by Cowboy Wrecks (David T. Finfarra), Gwen Jorgenson, El Bisko, Aunt Chilada’s staff, and the entire music community of Phoenix.

The move not only brings the AZLMC a tad closer for their southern fans but also continues their legacy of being north siders. Having shifted six times in just nearly three years, the cooperative is no stranger to change. But each move amplifies their commitment to their mission: crafting spaces where music reigns supreme and the community’s spirit shines bright.

For those eager to immerse in Phoenix’s pulsating musical heart, the nonprofit AZLMC Open Mic beckons every Monday night. Swing by and experience the magic yourself!

Arizona’s Motorcycle Safety Gets a Boost

AMSAF secures $100,000 for rider training scholarships.

Photo courtesy of Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation

THE SAFETY AND TRAINING OF ARIZONA’S MOTORCYCLISTS JUST GOT A SIGNIFICANT LIFT. The Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) recently celebrated the acquisition of a $100,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (AZGOHS). This grant accentuates AZGOHS’s commitment to AMSAF’s objective: to elevate motorcycle awareness and consequently reduce rider fatalities and injuries.

According to Mick Degn, AMSAF’s executive director, the emphasis is on continuity. “Our enthusiasm about awarding scholarships for educating both new and ongoing riders remains steadfast,” he notes. Degn also takes a moment to acknowledge AZGOHS director Jesse Torrez, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support in this shared vision of motorbike safety in the state.

To paint a broader picture, this scholarship initiative isn’t AMSAF’s maiden voyage. They’ve been at this for a while, having provided an impressive tally of over 5,000 scholarships in Arizona geared toward rider education. But they’re not resting on their laurels. The grant will facilitate:

• The cultivation of distinctive partnerships with local businesses, eyeing the reduction of crashes and fatalities.

• Investigations pinpointing perilous intersections and road patches notorious for motorcycle mishaps.

• Encouragement for more Arizonians to undergo rider training through attractive discount enticements.

• Engaging influential industry collaborators to amplify AMSAF’s mission through diverse events and outreach.

It’s about making rider education accessible. An elementary rider course in Arizona can burden an individual with up to a staggering $350. But with the AMSAF scholarship, only a modest $100 non-refundable co-pay is required. A boon to every Arizonian motorbike enthusiast, details on availing of this scholarship are available at amsaf.org/scholarships.

Further, successfully clearing a rider’s skill course or mastering the in-person skills assessment is a pre-requisite for the motorcycle endorsement (M) on the Arizona state driver’s license. The cherry on top? Most major insurers roll out enticing policy discounts for those who’ve accomplished this safety and training course.

Whether you’re a newbie on two wheels or a seasoned rider wanting to sharpen those riding reflexes, the Basic Rider Course (BRC) endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is your go-to.

AMSAF stands tall as Arizona’s beacon for rider and driver safety. With the state witnessing an escalating number of motorcycle-involved crashes, approaching 3,000 annually, AMSAF’s dual approach - bolstering motorcycle awareness among drivers and top-notch safety training for riders - is more crucial than ever.

For the latest in motorcycle news, safety tips, and more, visit amsaf.org.

Fine Art Photographer

Larry Brecker is PV Arts

Board New Featured Artist

DR. LARRY BRECKER, A FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER, WAS CHOSEN BY THE PV ARTS BOARD TO BE THE FEATURED ARTIST AT PARADISE VALLEY TOWN HALL FOR 2023-2024. A Paradise Valley resident, Brecker will exhibit 40 pieces of fine art photography featuring Arizona flora and work influenced by ikebana, the art of Japanese floral arranging.

The year-long exhibition opens to the public for self-guided tours on Wednesday, Oct. 25 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special “Meet the Artist” receptions, free to the public, are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. December 7 and February 7 and April 18, 2024. Brecker will answer questions about his work and sign his newly released art book, “Desert Inspired.”

PV Arts Board Chair Laura PaqueletCarpinelli encourages residents and visitors alike to experience Brecker’s art.

“The passion and clarity of Larry’s work was evident to each of our board members who toured his studio,” Paquelet says. “The joy and enthusiasm Larry shared while explaining how he completes a piece from concept to finalization was informative and triggered emotional connections. His art moved us, and it was no surprise that the board unanimously voted to invite him to be a PV Arts Board Featured Artist.” Brecker, a New York native, is a life-long

photographer. His interest grew while traveling extensively in Europe during his medical school training in Geneva, Switzerland. With his medical degree in hand, Brecker chose Tucson for his internship and fell in love with Arizona.

“Four years of dermatology specialty training in Oklahoma introduced me to pathology. The importance of subtle differences in detail, color, and texture was crucial for diagnosis of skin diseases. One of the first things I learned was to look at the big picture, then to dial into the microenvironment. Capturing light and shadows to show color, texture, depth, and detail on the slide became an obsession,” Brecker says.

He chose Phoenix to open his practice, where he further honed his skills while photographing skin lesions for educational lectures.

He shared his own nature and landscape photography in his office and created a gallery with moveable walls in the waiting room. While he also showcased other artists’ work, none of the work was for sale.

Brecker’s body of work on display at Town Hall shows his evolution and transition through various photographic techniques over the last 20 years.

“I chose work for this exhibition primarily from my wife Carol’s and my Arizona garden. I love exposing intimate close-ups of desert flora and immortalizing Carol’s ephemeral Ikebana arrangements in my work,” he says.

For more information, visit paradisevalleyaz.gov. To see more of Brecker’s work, visit breckerarts.com.

Bikers for Boobies AZ, the renowned Arizona-based charity, has revved up its engines for the 14th year in a row to combat breast cancer. Teaming up with prominent local businesses and bands, the charity invites community members to be part of this exceptional cause.

The 14th Annual motorcycle event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14, is backed by Arizona Bike Week, J&P Cycles Scottsdale, Chuck Franklin Law, and over 20 Valley businesses.

“It is hard to believe that we have been doing this for 14 years,” says Bikers for Boobies AZ President Shelley Brorsen “It’s a great feeling knowing that together, we are raising awareness and fighting all types of cancer with the emphasis on breast

cancer. We’re hoping to raise more funding and awareness through this event.”

Kicking off at J&P Cycles, 8606 E. Shea Blvd., in Scottsdale, the day's journey will conclude with a grand parking lot party at the Dirty Dogg Saloon, 10409 N. Scottsdale Rd. Attendees can look forward to live performances from local musical talents, an array of raffle prizes, a silent auction, and delectable bites from the popular Pizza Butcher food truck.

Bikers for Boobies AZ's commendable legacy since its inception in 2009 includes providing over 1,000 women with free mammograms. Through its grants program, the charity has also distributed more than $200,000 for survival and medical grants. Furthermore, the charity has generously donated between $1,000 to $10,000 to various organizations aiding families and individuals grappling with

cancer. “We are so grateful,” says Treasurer Laura Rasmussen.

In the past, Bikers for Boobies has contributed over $250,000 to charities such as The Singletons, Casting for Recovery, Don’t be a Chump–Check for a Lump, Forth & Bubble, The Joy Bus, and many others. This year, with renewed vigor and a broader partnership with local

resources, the charity is poised to make an even bigger impact.

Tickets for the event can be secured at bikers4boobiesaz.org at $30 per individual or $40 for couples. Non-riders are equally welcome to join the festivities with a $20 donation as the entry fee. It's essential to note that the event caters exclusively to attendees aged 21 and above.

Slated for Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the iconic Arizona Biltmore Resort, located at 2400 E. Missouri Ave., in Phoenix, this fundraiser promises not just a scrumptious breakfast, but also a powerful message.

Tickets for the event have already gone live. A potent narrative about how “Food is Medicine,” emphasizing the crucial interplay of nutrition and health.

Proceeds from the breakfast will channel into the critical community initiatives undertaken by HonorHealth Desert Mission. This organization has been a beacon of support for the greater Phoenix

populace, offering a plethora of services and programs. Their impressive contributions in 2022 encompassed distributing over 16,000 emergency food boxes and aiding more than 8,000 households with essential food supplies. They also supplemented over 3,000 emergency food boxes designated for low-income seniors, as federally mandated.

Park Howell, notable as the brains behind the acclaimed “Business of Story” podcast—a podcast hailed as 2022’s premier business storytelling platform by Feedspot—will grace the occasion. Complementing Howell’s narrative insights will be chef Bianco, whose culinary accolades speak for themselves.

Registration and networking start at 7:30 a.m. and the breakfast and program run from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 per person. For those interested in furthering their support, sponsorships and table packages remain up for grabs. For more information or to secure your spot, visit honorhealthfoundation.org/dmgold.

JOHNSON’S CLEANING

Have you given up on cleaning your house, and would like to see it emerge from under the dirt again? We’re there for you. Looking for a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or yearly service that you can trust?

Our staff is prompt, courteous, and friendly. We understand what it takes to keep your home thoroughly clean.

Two Paradise Valley brothers, Ishan and Sahil Bagai, set out to address a daily challenge faced by countless families: the logistical nightmare of ferrying kids to school and various activities. Their brainchild, LetsRideKids, an app-based carpooling platform launched in 2022, offers a unique solution to this modern-day puzzle.

Ishan, a student at Brophy Preparatory High School in Phoenix and an environmental sciences and robotics enthusiast, recently was one of five prestigious recipients of the Nobel Good Earth Sustainability Scholarship, presented by the National Society of High School Scholars for his work . This award spotlights young individuals who fervently advocate for conservation, sustainability, and the preservation of Earth.

Joining forces with his younger brother Sahil, a techsavvy student at Basis Scottsdale, their combined experiences, which ranged from participating in science competitions to leading 3D printing clubs at school, fueled their determination to bring their idea to life.

LetsRideKids stands out in the saturated world of apps because it’s not just about sharing rides; it’s about fostering community ties and promoting sustainability. The premise is simple: drivers list rides with available seats, and passengers can search for drivers headed in the same direction. This arrangement ensures that kids travel with familiar faces from school or neighborhood activities, creating

a safer environment and fostering long-lasting relationships.

The brothers recalled an instance when, after being ferried around town by their parents for various activities, they noticed their peers heading to the same destinations in separate cars. This realization birthed LetsRideKids, aiming to pool resources for a greener, more efficient solution.

Beyond convenience, safety is paramount. The app boasts many safety features, such as driver’s license and identity verification, live geo-tracking during rides, and an in-app chat and calling system. Furthermore, users can rate drivers and passengers, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness.

Ishan and Sahil’s commitment extends beyond the virtual realm. They believe that by reducing individual car journeys, they can foster closer community bonds and contribute to a sustainable future.

Although the Bagai brothers had the vision and design for the app, they relied on freelance developers to bring their creation to life. Launched earlier this year, LetsRideKids, accompanied by its supportive website, seeks to revolutionize the way parents and communities think about daily commutes.

The free app, currently available on the App Store and Google Play, might introduce a subscription model if it gains traction. But for now, the brothers are focusing on their mission of uniting communities, making daily rides safer, and contributing to a greener world. For more information, visit letsridekids.com.

Birth to Five Helpline Awareness Week to Spotlight Free Support Line for Families with Young Children

Southwest Human Development, the leading nonprofit in early childhood development in Arizona, is celebrating the third annual Birth to Five Helpline Awareness Week from October 9 to 15.

This week-long event shines a spotlight on the organization’s free support line for Arizona parents, caregivers, and professionals to call, text, or email questions or concerns about parenting and the early development of children from birth to age 5.

“At one time or another, all of us as parents have had questions about raising our children, and many of us don’t have local family or friends to turn to,” says Jake Adams, chief development officer at Southwest Human Development. “We find ourselves asking, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’, or ‘Why is my child behaving this way?’ The Birth to Five Helpline is a critical resource for families that helps bridge that gap and provides muchneeded support for families of the nearly 80,000 babies that are born in Arizona each year.”

Started in 2005 with support from First Things First

and other community partners, the Birth to Five Helpline offers information and advice around a variety of early childhood issues such as feeding and eating, sleep, toilet/potty training, developmental milestones, fussiness/colic and difficult behaviors, general parenting questions, and more.

“The Birth to Five Helpline specialists take the time to listen and think together with the caller. Plus, our specialists serve as a gateway to programs and services throughout our community,” says Ricardo Reyes, manager of community outreach at Southwest Human Development. “Parenting can be hard, so our goal is to make sure every Arizona family with young

children knows that this free service is available to them.”

The Birth to Five Helpline is also available to help staff of childcare centers and other professionals across the state who work with children from birth to 5 years of age.

Early childhood specialists who are bilingual in Spanish and English are available by phone or text (877-705KIDS) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Birth to Five Helpline app available on the Apple App and Google Play stores and an on-line form found at birthtofivehelpline.org offer individuals an afterhours option.

Barro’s & Dr. Pepper's $10,000 Tuition Giveaway Returns Applications for

the prize money now open.

Barro’s Pizza is once again joining hands with Dr. Pepper to grant $10,000 to one Arizona resident through the 2023 Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway. The prize aims to support a student's college expenses. Through December 17 of this year, entrants can text BARROS to 737737 for a chance to win the tuition award.

"Our partnership showcases our mutual commitment to fostering young talent," says Bruce Barro, Barro’s Pizza owner. "Each year, we're proud to collaborate with Dr. Pepper to provide $10,000 to a deserving student, helping them focus on academics without financial stress. Community support is at the heart of our family and business values."

Barro’s Pizza is a family-owned and operated pizza restaurant with 48 locations in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal

counties. The Barro’s Pizza recipe comes from Grandma Angelina Barro who came from Italy in the 1930s, making a pizza unlike any other. People may disagree on whether it's the thick crust with its light, flakey texture, or the tangy and sweet spiced sauce that is the secret of this great tasting pizza. Barro’s Pizza also offers wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, glutenfree pizza options, dessert, beer and wine.

Since its inception in 2012, the Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has granted $105,000 to Arizona students. Eligibility includes Arizona residents 17 years and above who are or will be attending a qualified institution. A random draw will determine the winner from text entries. Prize money can be used for tuition, books, or settling student loan debts.

ANTI-GRAVITY GYROS Kids’ Corner

Gravity got you down? Explore ways to overcome it by building and testing an anti-gravity device. Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that objects at rest tend to

stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion (unless acted on by an outside force). Centripetal forces are any forces (gravitational, electrical/atomic, or tension) that move inward, toward the fixed center of the circular motion. In this activity, the string attached to the cup creates a centripetal force and

when the circular motion of the cup moves faster than the horizontal motion (inertia) of the water/objects. As a result, the water/objects stay in the cup.

SUPPLIES

• A 9 oz. paper or plastic cup

• One (1) sharpened pencil

• One to five (1-5) pennies or marbles

• Water

• Two 2-ft. long pieces of string

HOW TO

1. Using the pencil, punch one hole in the cup ½ inch below the rim.

2. Punch a second hole on the opposite side of the cup ½ inch below the rim.

3. Thread one piece of string through each hole and tie them off.

4. Place pennies, marbles, or water in the cup.

5. Investigate how you can prevent the materials from falling out of the cup when upside down.

Repeat steps four through five with pennies, marbles, and water.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

1. What direction does gravity point?

2. What is inertia?

3. What things resist the force of gravity by moving in the opposite direction?

4. How can you prevent gravity from making the water spill out of the cup when it is turned upside down without placing your hand over the top of the cup?

5. When you tested your anti-gravity device, what was it that prevented the penny, marble, or water from spilling out?

You can learn a bunch more about gravity and more when you visit the Arizona Science Center. Be sure to stop by the Dorrance Planetarium and Forces of Nature! Visit azscience.org for more information!

20 • October 2023 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW myhyperlocalnews.com Cover Story

In our teens and 20s, most of us feel invincible, full of life with endless energy, and rebound quickly from injuries. In our 30s and 40s, our sleep quality typically decreases, causing us to feel more tired from the grind of work and kids. We rely on coffee or caffeinated drinks to get through the day and help with brain fog. If this sounds familiar, it may be a sign of the early stages of cognitive decline that can lead to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

“When people get a diagnosis, it’s like a death sentence because the medical community can’t give you a pill to fix the problem — only to slow the progression,” says Dr. Michael Jarembek at Active Care Wellness PLLC in Scottsdale. “It’s like kicking a can down the road to get the same result.”

However, Dr. Jarembek says decline is not inevitable, and his practice helps patients detect early cognitive decline and make lifestyle changes, so they don’t go down that road.

A chiropractor who has served the Valley for more than 20 years, Dr. Jarembek began his journey in functional neurology in 2020 out of intrigue. Little did he know it would open his eyes to the realities of cognitive decline and brain-based disorders. He took a course through the American Functional Neurology Institute where “I got hooked because everything that they were talking about resonated with me,” he says.

Dr. Jarembek learned that the first sign of cognitive decline is decreased focus and concentration, which can progress to anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

“When addressing brain-based disorders, you can’t look and treat only the brain; you have to treat the whole body, especially the gut, or ‘the second brain,’” he explains. “The gut is directly connected to the brain through a superhighway nerve known as the vagus nerve. So, if your gut is healthy, your brain should be healthy, right?

Unfortunately, Dr. Jarembek says 90% of the U.S. population has leaky gut syndrome, an intestinal condition in which a weakening of the intestinal walls allows bacteria and toxins into the bloodstream. These toxins can cause autoimmune disorders in the body.

“Leaky gut is typically caused by the GMO [genetically modified organism] wheat we eat daily,” he says. “Years of eating gluten breaks down the lining in the gut from inflammation, and it will slowly damage the vagus nerve over time.”

He says damage to the vagus nerve causes gut issues, such as bloating, gas, and heartburn. That’s

when we often reach for antacids and may notice our brain isn’t as sharp, and we suffer from brain fog and sleep disturbances.

Dr. Jarembek warns that research shows that leaky gut syndrome will also occur six hours after a concussion, head trauma, or car accident. “The leaky gut doesn’t fix itself and progresses, worsening over decades, and, at some point, you can start to suffer with chronic pain syndromes and cognitive disorders like early dementia, Parkinson’s, or Alzheimer’s.”

As Dr. Jarembek assessed himself through his functional neurology program, he discovered at age 45 that he had early-stage cognitive decline. Diagnosing himself early allowed him to absolve his symptoms through a 10-week gut cleanse and doing neurological brain-based exercises and rehab.

“Much of the work comes from the patient,” he says, “from what they put in their mouth to doing the brain-based exercises in the office and at home. The patient must show up.”

Dr. Jarembek put his passion for his work in functional neurology and helping people toward a book. “Enough is Enough: Take Your Health into Your Own Hands” was released in early December. In the Amazon best-selling book, he explains extensively the correlation between the brain, body, and gut.

“There are seven key areas of health that I look

RightEye Vision System. Through an eye-tracking exam, it can quantify a number from zero to 100. A score of 90 or more is a healthy brain.

“We monitor and manage patients’ progression as they do home exercises and in-office treatments over time,” he says.

Active Care Wellness also offers Pulse PEMF technology. PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic fields, infuses the body with magnetic energy at the cellular level to enhance the body’s natural recovery and healing.

“I have about $200,000 in state-of-the-art equipment to help assess and treat the brain and body for optimal healing,” he says.

New patients who sign up for the neurology exam with nerve damage screening will get a free copy of the book. Call Dr. Jarembek today if you’d like him to speak at your next gathering or group event about detecting early cognitive decline and preventing dementia and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

“Don’t let your age or symptoms fool you,” says Dr. Jarembek. “Decline is avoidable.”

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Rich Sullivan. I’VE LIVED IN ARCADIA FOR 32 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… it is beautiful and central to everywhere in the Valley. Scottsdale, Biltmore, Tempe, and downtown Phoenix are all easily in reach. The airport is conveniently located just down the street, providing easy access for travel requirements. Coupled with the freeway system, it truly serves as the heart of the Valley.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… getting organized each morning, having a productive workday, exercising when possible, and having a nice meal to wind down in the evenings.

MY FAMILY IS… mostly in the New England area, but also expands into Nashville, Tennessee, and Keller, Texas. My children all live here in the Valley.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… welcoming the day with a rich, strong cup of coffee. It's a habit I happily rely on to jump-start my mornings.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Casablanca.” It has it all – beauty, love, intrigue, suspense, humor, and a nationalistic pride that speaks to protecting freedoms everywhere.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an attorney, but got caught up in hospitality. I loved cooking and the rewards of taking part in an intense team-driven mission.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Walking in Memphis” by Marc Cohen because it is soulful, spiritual, and has a nice melody.

THE PEOPLE WHO MOTVITATE ME ARE… my children.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… listening to David Spade and Dana Carvey. They are quick, insightful, and just plain fun.

THE PERFECT DAY FOR ME… starts with the morning ritual of sipping a cup of coffee. Next, I'd hop on my bike and take a peaceful ride along the canal, followed by a hearty breakfast at Matt's. If the weather is good, a walk around Scottsdale Mall makes for the perfect mid-day activity. As evening approaches, I cap off the day with a delicious dinner at one of our local restaurants, paired with a full-bodied glass of red wine. With so many choices on offer, the restaurant is always a fun pick depending on my cravings for the day.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… the 100 Club of Arizona. I cannot think of a better way to give than to give to those who give us everything.

MY LIFE IS… about learning and growing, paying attention to the little things, teaching all around me, and explaining the “why” to help understanding.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… a Honda 70 minibike when I was a kid. It was the biggest surprise I never saw coming and still makes me smile.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… a couple of days dining in New York City, then off to Nantucket to smell the ocean air, and feel the cools breezes.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… be the calming force in the middle of a storm.

Phoenix Theatre Group Delights People Living with Dementia

It’s a little magical how a small theater troupe can walk through the door and instantly transform the space around them.

That’s exactly what five talented actors do so effortlessly as part of Phoenix Theatre’s Partners That Heal program. They travel all over the Valley, using improv, music, storytelling, and movement to engage and delight audiences of every age and ability.

Recently, they visited Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus in central Phoenix. They spent time with residents at the assisted living center, members of the adult day club and preschoolers in the adjoining child center. Working in perfect harmony, they lead people who are living with dementia on a spontaneous journey that unlocks their imaginations.

“We all have that child inside of us and we let them be kids again. We give them a chance to play,” says PTH member Mike Lawler. “And we feel like we’re part of the care team.”

Marshal Glass agrees. “This light goes on inside of them and it’s just wonderful to see. Then the staff tells us the patient’s never done that before!”

The actors harness joy by sparking happy memories with familiar songs and stories.

“We come in and people who are showing no emotion or expression immediately start remembering moments,” shares Sally Jo Bannow. “Somehow, it taps into their imagination and creativity.”

“We want to get a smile on people’s faces. I get chills just thinking about it,” Kim Manning gushes. “That’s the whole reason we’re here.”

“You can tell they’re so connected and waiting for more,” adds Brian Sweis. “It’s so rewarding, and we just feel honored to be a part of that.”

Partners That Heal has visited more than 70,000 people in our community over the last decade. “They appeal to preschoolers; they appeal to someone who’s in their 70s and 80s with dementia. They meet everyone where they’re at,” says Dementia Campus Enrichment Coordinator Angela Hofler.

“Their stories might be about someone’s favorite animal, or maybe we’re all going on an African safari, and the next minute we’re waterskiing in the ocean having ice cream. They bring so much fun to us. We are lucky to have them spreading their magic and touching so many lives!”

Why You Shouldn’t Be Worried About HRT Causing Breast Cancer

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and our goal is to empower women with accurate health information! Misconceptions about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) often deter women due to fears of breast cancer risk. Let’s address this concern.

WHAT IS HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY?

HRT provides the body with necessary hormones to ease discomfort from hormonal imbalances, like menopausal symptoms of hot flashes and mood swings. HRT is available in various forms, but not all HRT is created equally.

Synthetic hormones are chemically altered, often leading to side effects. Bioidentical hormones, however, are structurally identical to hormones naturally produced by the body, reducing associated side effects. Many women prefer bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) for this reason.

DEBUNKING THE MYTH THAT HRT CAUSES BREAST CANCER:

The risks in the media aren’t what we thought them to be! Initial studies from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) indicated a 26% increase in breast cancer risk with estrogen and synthetic progestin use. Unfortunately, this was interpreted as 26 in 100 women will get breast cancer.

It actually translates to less than one additional breast cancer case per 1,000 women, per year. A recent UK study also confirmed the WHI results: Women using estrogen-only HRT did not show elevated breast cancer risk compared to non-users.

THE KEY TAKEAWAY:

The only group with increased breast cancer risk were those taking estrogen

and synthetic progestin. Women using estrogen and bioidentical progesterone had no increased breast cancer risk.

For many women, BHRT has transformed their health, alleviating hot flashes and night sweats, stabilizing mood, improving vaginal health, and supporting weight management.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR WOMEN:

Hormonal shifts are not something you “just have to deal with.” At Ethos Integrative Medicine, we prioritize assessing for potential risk factors before any treatment. Our approach involves a comprehensive evaluation of your health history and precise lab tests before recommending any BHRT.

With the right provider, thorough lab testing, advanced cancer screening, and tailored care, BHRT is a safe and effective solution to alleviate peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms, leading to an improved quality of life!

Pediatric Support with Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a specific type of health care that focuses on whole patient wellness. The role of a naturopathic physician is to diagnose, treat, and prevent acute and chronic illness by identifying underlying causes. We focus on removing barriers that may be impacting health, rather than solely on symptomatic treatment. This medicine can be very beneficial for children. Pediatric health care is a big part of my practice and children respond very well to integrative medicine. Here are a few ways a naturopathic physician can help support your child.

SKIN CONDITIONS

Skin conditions are very common in my practice, especially for children. Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions I see in children and can last throughout adulthood. When there is a skin condition, one of the first places we investigate is the digestive system. We focus on healing the gut by balancing the gut flora. Food sensitivities can also be a cause of skin conditions and we explore those by elimination of highly allergenic foods and/or food sensitivity testing. Other skin conditions, such as acne, can also be supported in similar ways with additional focus on hormone balancing and diet changes.

DIGESTION

Gastrointestinal support is a staple for all ages in naturopathic medicine; however, it can be an important part of pediatric support. Many children struggle with constipation, stomach pain, and diarrhea. We investigate the root cause of any digestive upset. We focus on diet, as food allergies and sensitivities can play an important role in constipation or stomach pain. We support the GI tract by balancing gut flora, especially if there has been a long history of antibiotic use. We also look at stress management and anxiety as it can be a big culprit of digestive upset as well.

IMMUNE SUPPORT

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to support the body and maintain optimal health. Children are exposed to many illnesses, so proper immune support is important. We investigate any nutritional deficiencies and ensure proper supplementation if warranted. If illness occurs, we can support with many natural remedies such as herbal formulas and supplements that can boost the immunity and help fight illness. If stronger intervention is needed, such as antibiotics, we will support any side effects from those medications.

WELL CHILD EXAMS/CHECKUPS

Well child exams start at infancy to check growth and development. This includes a detailed health history review, diet, and nutrition evaluation, physical examination, immunization discussions and support, and a growth review. We also focus on the naturopathic approach by supporting parents, discussing milestones, and supporting the immune system naturally.

As a naturopathic physician, my job is to treat the whole person and individualize medicine. We can treat a variety of conditions in children in addition to the above listed. I love to teach children to be proactive about their health starting from a young age. It is very rewarding to see my little patients grow into young adults with the knowledge of a healthy lifestyle and immune system support.

Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information visit drjennadye.com

Health Navigating Cold and Flu Season: Strengthening Your Immune System

Article courtesy of Prime IV Hydration

As the autumn breeze brings colorful foliage and cooler temperatures, it also ushers in the annual cold and flu season. The quest to safeguard our well-being becomes a top priority, prompting us to explore a variety of strategies to bolster our immune defenses.

Among these approaches, oral vitamin supplements, injections, and IV therapy stand out as noteworthy options.

EMBRACING IMMUNE VIGILANCE

October Special

EXPLORING THE NUTRIENT TRIO

Vitamin C: Renowned for its antioxidant properties, Vitamin C supports immune cells’ ability to ward off infections. Whether through oral supplementation, injections, or IV therapy, Vitamin C is a versatile ally in immune defense.

Zinc: This mineral is essential for immune cell function and inflammation control. Zinc injections or IV therapy can help quickly restore optimal levels, providing a shield against seasonal illnesses.

SUMMER Gift VOUCHERS

The transition from summer to fall comes with shifts in weather, which can impact our immune system’s ability to fend off infections. Understanding the dynamics of immune resilience during this time can help us take proactive steps to stay healthy.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF SUPPLEMENTS

$400

Oral vitamin supplements have long been a cornerstone of immune support. Vitamins such as C and D, along with minerals like Zinc, play vital roles in immune function. These supplements are easily accessible and can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines.

INJECTIONS: A TARGETED BOOST

Injections offer a more targeted way to deliver essential nutrients directly into the body. Vitamin injections, for instance, provide a rapid dose of nutrients that can quickly contribute to immune system health. Professional guidance ensures proper administration and monitoring.

IV THERAPY: ELEVATED IMMUNE FORTIFICATION

Intravenous (IV) therapy takes nutrient delivery to the next level. By infusing a blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants directly into the bloodstream, IV therapy offers unparalleled bioavailability. Vitamin C, Zinc, and Glutathione are often part of IV formulations, synergistically enhancing immune responses.

Glutathione: A potent antioxidant, Glutathione aids in cellular repair and neutralizes harmful free radicals. Its inclusion in IV therapy formulations adds a layer of protection to our immune system.

COMPLEMENTARY STRATEGIES

While oral supplements, injections, and IV therapy offer targeted approaches, they’re most effective when coupled with a comprehensive immune-boosting lifestyle. A balanced diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, stress management, and proper hydration collectively contribute to resilient immunity.

PERSONALIZED PATHS TO WELLNESS

Before embarking on any immuneboosting regimen, consulting a healthcare professional is crucial. They can tailor recommendations based on individual health profiles, ensuring that the chosen approach aligns with specific needs.

NAVIGATING THE SEASON AHEAD

This fall, as the leaves change color, let’s also change our approach to immune health. Whether you opt for oral supplements, injections, or IV therapy, the goal remains the same: to equip your immune system with the tools it needs to thrive in the face of seasonal challenges. So, embrace the beauty of the season and embark on a journey towards wellness that will carry you through the colder months with confidence.

Planning Your Estate with the Revocable Living Trust

Afriend recently told me a story about a woman she knew who did her trust with a company that offered steep discounts. You may already know what’s coming. She met with an attorney for less than 15 minutes. Then, when she signed her trust documents, she was with a salesman who spent hours trying to sell her an annuity. That is one of the problems that often arise with the companies who offer cut-rate deals on a trust.

But what about the other problems? If a trust isn’t put together properly, it won’t provide the support for you and your family when the time comes to use it. Here are a few things that a good trust needs to provide.

Done properly, the trust makes it easy for someone to step in to assist when you need help. However, often trusts done by non-attorneys fail in this role. The trustee appointment only says what happens if the trust owner dies – there is no appointment of a person to serve on incapacity of the trust grantor. To deal with this, we must file expensive court proceedings to appoint a trustee for incapacity when needed. In the meantime, bills go unpaid, or finances deteriorate, since the family cannot move forward.

The trusts we prepare in our office avoid these issues. We are clear about how a successor trustee is appointed to step in for you. In addition, even if all of your named trustees are unable to serve, we have a backup plan to get the right

trustee in place without having to go to court. A well drafted and well thought out trust will have these kinds of fail-safe provisions that an estate plan, that is only for the purposes of an annuity sales pitch, won’t contain.

Next, a properly formed and funded trust will hold your assets and upon death provide for the transfer of assets while avoiding a probate and a public disclosure of everything you own. The trust appoints the person you name to handle your estate, and they can do so quickly and in private. First and foremost, the trust first needs to put forward the proper plan for you. I once reviewed a trust done by an annuity company that did not even contain beneficiaries. None. The beneficiaries were left out of the trust document, not even contained in a document attached to the trust (which is also a bad idea).

A trust that is tailored to you will not only name your beneficiaries but take their situations into account. Is someone receiving important government benefits? The trust can hold their share in a special needs trust. Has someone had drug or alcohol issues? We can include substance abuse provisions to protect them. Have a blended family and want to include your spouse and still have your separate children inherit? That takes planning with an attorney, and more than just 15 minutes total time.

It’s important to plan for your estate, and it is important that you do it right. Our office, which includes me and my associate attorney Travis Meyers, would be happy to assist you in doing it properly. Call us at 602-375-6752 and check out our website at libbybanks.com.

Our Estate Planning in Phoenix and Scottsdale is highly customized to meet your unique family situation, assets, values, and personal goals. Our complimentary first meeting allows you to get to know our Estate Planning team and talk about your unique situation and what plan will best fit your needs.

Remember, when you choose us you are not only hiring someone to prepare your Estate Plan, you are choosing a seasoned Estate Planning attorney to guide you through this often complex process and raise questions you might not have considered. You are choosing an experienced team to create a plan that serves your family in the way that you want and, after you are gone, a trusted advisor that your loved ones can depend on.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

IN THEATERS

The third installment in this series once again delivers what fans expect: Denzel Washington brutalizing bad guys in unique and gory ways. This time around, director Antoine Fuqua infuses the action scenes with a horror-like atmosphere, showing McCall stalking his prey from the shadows and using distorted angles, thanks to the work of DP Robert Richardson. This approach helps the film stand out from its predecessors, even though it sometimes reverts to a more conventional style in certain scenes and exhibits pacing issues reminiscent of earlier installments. Intriguingly, the film also delves into the deeper aspects of McCall's character, questioning if he can ever find true peace and whether there's more to his life than violence. These reflective moments create a striking contrast to the film's brutal scenes. This is arguably the best installment of the series, and it could serve as a fitting conclusion.

performances as surprisingly welldeveloped characters, especially given the film's brief duration. The movie serves as a testament to what can be achieved with limited resources and time. I eagerly anticipate Rodriguez's next project.

“Bottoms”

A group of girls start a fight club to try to get with their crushes.

“Bottoms” is a true-blue contender for the title of most anarchic movie of the year, given the reality it presents. Every character and scenario is exaggerated to the max, and it’s an absolute blast to watch everyone adopt the most extreme approaches to everything, from singing to fighting. The superb cast sells it all, from leads Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri to even the minor background characters. Emma Seligman's direction is simpler compared to her debut, "Shiva Baby," but it complements the tone of the film. The visuals and tropes of a typical comedy (paired with a familiar soundtrack) contrast sharply with the Mad Max-esque actions on screen. It's a truly unique and entertaining piece.

“The Equalizer 3”

Robert McCall finds himself defending a small Italian town from the mafia.

“Miguel

Wants to Fight”

A young man wants to get in a fight before his life goes through a major change.

Short and sweet aptly describes Oz Rodriguez's new movie. At its core, the film presents a moral tale about the perils of succumbing to peer pressure and allowing fiction to shape one's worldview. Rodriguez adeptly navigates the young cast through two contrasting styles: reality and imagination, which feel like distinct films yet seamlessly blend together. This is not to undermine the cast's contribution; they certainly hold their own, delivering heartfelt

“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

Two BFFs find their friendship tested against the dangers of middle school drama.

A more traditional comedy, this film isn't particularly memorable, but it's not bad either. Sunny and Sadie Sandler are the clear standouts of the movie. The latter's deadpan delivery and the former's exaggerated humor truly make them shine. The film's primary drawback is its repetitiveness, often recycling the same beats to pad its runtime. Its structure is peculiar, seemingly introducing specific plot points either too early or too late. While I appreciate its attempts at originality and its refreshing depiction of Judaism compared to other

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain?

You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:

1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…

5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked

If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.

What To Avoid

Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

How To Get Rid Of Sciatica Pain for Good
