411: The Latest Local News You Need to Know
HISTORIC PARADISE VALLEY CHURCH SOLD
Ascension Lutheran Church, designed by William Wesley (Wes) Peters, a protégé of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was sold due to steep maintenance costs. As the church approached its 60th anniversary, it was confronted with about $2 million in repair bills.
Faced with declining congregational numbers and the pandemic’s challenges, church leaders made the difficult decision to sell. On July 24, CHM Holdings acquired the nearly 5-acre property for $11 million. This comes after the church had previously offloaded an acre of their land, a transaction in which broker Frank DiMaggio played a role.
MANUEL’S MEXICAN RESTAURANT TO OPEN AT FORMER TAPHOUSE KITCHEN SITE ON SHEA BOULEVARD
Notable local eatery, Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant, has announced the opening of its newest restaurant at 3131 E. Shea Blvd., Phoenix, just west of 32nd St., this month. The restaurant will take over the location previously occupied by Taphouse Kitchen.
The Salazar family, pillars of the Phoenix culinary scene, initiated their venture with Manuel’s Mexican Food back in 1964 at 32nd Street and Indian School Road. Founded by Manuel and Alice Salazar, the restaurant’s ethos has always been rooted in delivering a welcoming ambiance coupled with the finest Mexican delicacies.
Manuel’s has been honored as a Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite since 2017, reflecting their consistent quality and community rapport. As the Salazar family grew, so did their business footprint. Today, with the addition of the new venue on Shea Blvd., the chain boasts eight locations throughout the Valley. While each restaurant under the Manuel’s umbrella is individually owned and managed, the overarching leadership and shared values remain a collective effort of the Salazar family.
For more information, visit manuelsaz.fiestaconcepts.com.
In a nod to community concerns and attachments, CHM Holdings has allowed the congregation to use the premises for another year while they scout for a new location. Despite the sale, the church remains committed to its community, considering options like merging with another church or sharing facilities.
One significant aspect of the church’s current location is its “Homeless Jesus” art installation and a columbarium, both of which church officials wish to relocate.
However, potential redevelopment by CHM Holdings will face regulatory scrutiny. Before any transformation begins, especially into single-family homes, the buyer must navigate a series of approvals from Paradise Valley, including rezoning and preliminary plat considerations. As of now, no applications have been filed for the site.

Railroading enthusiasts from across the Valley will present these exhibits, shaded under tents, and strategically positioned near the Merci Train Car and the Model Railroad Building.

Arabian National Breeder Finals Returns to Scottsdale
Unique, complimentary event to showcase the world’s top Arabian horses.
THE ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED RETURN OF THE ARABIAN NATIONAL BREEDER FINALS AT THE EQUIDOME OF WESTWORLD IN SCOTTSDALE. SCHEDULED FROM WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 13 TO SATURDAY, SEPT. 16, THIS PREMIER EVENT PROMISES TO SPOTLIGHT THE PINNACLE OF ARABIAN HORSE BREEDING IN AN UNPARALLELED SETTING.
“We eagerly anticipate the 2023 Arabian National Breeder Finals and warmly welcome the international Arabian community and enthusiasts,” says Melissa Schalles, executive director of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona. “This boutique-style horse event encompasses both breeding and performance competitions. It’s an excellent spectacle for those unfamiliar with Arabian horses, ensuring entertainment for both longtime aficionados and newcomers to the equine world.”
Conceived from an enduring passion for the Arabian horse, the Arabian National Breeder Finals provides a thrilling platform for these majestic animals to compete. This year’s event will emphasize an elite halter/breeding showcase, promising prize money, prestige, and unparalleled opportunities for breeders and Arabian horse lovers. With up to 300 horses vying for the top spot, this competition stands out as the equine equivalent of the Westminster dog show.
The finals encompass diverse performances or “classes.” Participants include some of the world’s best Arabian and halter horses, competing for over $85,000 in prize money and the much-coveted title of “Finals Champion.”
Schalles adds, “The array of classes this year is particularly exciting. The Liberty Class showcases horses running free, riderless in the arena. The Weanlings Class spotlights horses aged between 3 to 6 months. And, of course, the Performance and Arabian Native Costume Classes never fail to captivate the audience.”
Beneficiaries of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona’s charitable endeavors include the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund, Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge, Hoofbeatz USA, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, March of Dimes, Scottsdale Community College Equine Science program, and Youth for Troops, among others.
The event will also feature exhibitors presenting jewelry, clothing, equestrian art, and a variety of food and beverages. CELEBRATING MUSIC AND THE ARTS FOR TWO DECADES, THE RED ROCKS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS BACK, PROMISING AN UNFORGETTABLE 22ND SEASON PACKED WITH A DAZZLING ARRAY OF PERFORMANCES. The festival, a nonprofit organization established in 2002 by Moshe Bukshpan, an esteemed Valley resident and violinist, continues to shape Arizona’s cultural scene.
With a mission to educate, engage, and challenge, the festival weaves a tapestry of melodies by fusing the talents of Arizona’s leading artists with globally acclaimed musicians. This season’s lineup at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church and Sedona Creative Life Center is particularly notable.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m., music
enthusiasts will gather at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church to celebrate the 70th birthday of iconic composer Daniel Asia. The evening promises an auditory journey featuring Asia’s “Piano Variations” & “Why (?) Jacob,” alongside “Variations on a theme by Chesnokov” by Joshua Nichols.
As an additional treat, Aaron Copeland’s “Piano Sonata” will be masterfully executed by Dr. Daniel Linder from the University of Arizona. To further enrich the experience, Prof. Asia will provide personal insights, introducing his compositions to the audience.
But the magic doesn’t stop there. Sunday, Oct. 15, sees another spectacular offering at 3 p.m. with “Brahms & Amram.” The iconic composer, pianist,
and singer David Amram collaborates with Grammy-nominated violinist Elmira Darvarova, Howard Wall on the French Horn (formerly of the NY Phil), and Thomas Weaver on the piano from Curtis Music Institute. A delightful medley of Amram’s pieces, including “Themes from Splendor in the Grass” and “Spontaneous Blues,” will be performed, with the Arizona evening piece dedicated to the festival, encouraging audience participation. The concert also boasts Brahms Horn Trio, Op.40 among other selections.
Sunday, Nov. 12, promises to be an affair to remember. Held at 3 p.m., the legendary violinist Shlomo Mintz teams up with pianist Vitaly Serebriakov to deliver masterpieces like A. Dvorak’s “Romance for violin & piano” and
Mintz’s “Sonatina,” marking its Arizona Premiere.
Outside its headline events, the festival holds the Winter Chamber Music Institute annually. This institute nurtures advanced strings and piano students, offering them coaching opportunities from a distinguished faculty.
Tickets for the various concerts range from $10 for students to $36 for general admissions. Given the excitement surrounding this year’s lineup and the festival’s stellar reputation, tickets are expected to sell out swiftly.

Outdoor Retailer Just Roughin’ It to Debut Second Store in the “Sheaborhood”
N. 32ND ST., IN PHOENIX. The store is targeting a soft open date of September 1.
Like its Scottsdale counterpart, the new store will offer a diverse range of hiking gear. However, this location will particularly spotlight day hiking equipment, with an assortment of other engaging merchandise.
The journey of Just Roughin’ It began in 2006, spearheaded by Arizona native Ray and his partner Debbie Hendricks, originally from upstate New York. The duo’s initial venture, a guiding service, proved to be a hit, leading them on adventures across various renowned locations, from the Grand Canyon to Yosemite National Park. Transitioning from guiding to a ‘brick and click’ business model, the store now offers both online and in-store shopping experiences, leveraging their extensive outdoor knowledge to aid customers.
Just Roughin’ It’s ethos is rooted in inclusivity. From novices to seasoned hikers, the store caters to all, ensuring everyone has access to top-tier gear tailored to their needs.
As the team behind the brand notes, they’re eager not only to sell quality products but also to share their vast knowledge of the great outdoors.
As the Just Roughin’ It team enthusiastically advocates, it’s all about embracing the “dirty fun” the outdoors offers. Customers agree, Just Roughin’ It has earned the accolade Best Outdoor Outfitter of the Valley for four years running: ‘19, ‘20, ‘21, and ‘22.

Scottsdale Plaza Resort Set for Major Expansion with New Rooms, Restaurants, and Spa
Rendering courtesy of Highgate
THE SCOTTSDALE PLAZA RESORT, A PROMINENT FIXTURE AT THE INTERSECTION OF SCOTTSDALE AND INDIAN BEND ROADS, IS GEARING UP FOR A MASSIVE EXPANSION. Recent developments reveal that the 404room resort has gotten the green light to add new rooms, restaurants, and a state-of-the-art spa.
Highgate, a hospitality management group based in New York, unveiled its plans for the nearly 50-year-old property after acquiring it in a partnership with Boston’s Rockpoint Group in 2021 for $90.75 million. Their vision for the Scottsdale Plaza Resort includes a redevelopment of the eastern portion of the 40-acre property close to Scottsdale Road. Key components of the renovation include 64 additional guest units, three new restaurants,
a modern spa with an upper-level pool area, a redesigned resort pool featuring a second-level viewing deck, a fresh lobby pavilion, and various enhancements peppered throughout the property. In total, this makeover will introduce 153,230 square feet across 12 new edifices.
However, this transformation is not without its sacrifices. Several existing buildings, amounting to over 39,000 square feet, are slated for demolition to accommodate the new structures. Although Highgate remains tight-lipped about the expenses linked with the expansion, projections indicate that the rejuvenated resort will welcome guests by the first quarter of 2025.
Highgate’s innovative vision for the Scottsdale Plaza Resort involves crafting “two cohesive but distinct resort experiences.” While exact details remain under wraps, one segment targets a younger audience, promising a vibrant and social experience. Conversely, the southern section will radiate luxury, offering upscale amenities to match.
These dual themes aim to cater to a diverse clientele, ensuring that guest expectations align with their experiences. Both segments will feature their dedicated lobbies. The pre-existing resort lobby will undergo a makeover, and its restaurant will sport a new identity as
an all-day dining spot. Meanwhile, a 2,700-square-foot lobby pavilion will emerge in the luxury segment.
These additions will witness the resort’s room count jump to 468. Some guest rooms will replace antiquated buildings, offering direct access to the new resort pool, while others will pepper a former parking lot. Eight villas are also in the pipeline for the resort’s southern side.
Highlighting the spa, Highgate emphasized the present facility’s outdated nature, prompting the decision to construct a two-story building. This establishment will house a brand-new spa, a fitness center, and retail outlets on the ground level, with a café and pool gracing the rooftop.
In terms of dining, the resort’s blueprints reveal the demolition of the now-defunct Remington’s restaurant and 10 lodge suites to pave the way for three new dining establishments. With a seating capacity ranging between 8,000 to 12,500 square feet, these venues will predominantly serve dinner.
Highgate has hired Angeles’ HKS as the chief architect, Floor Associates for landscape architecture, Simeone Deary Design Group and Design Agency for interior design, Rider Levett Bucknall as project manager, and Scottsdale’s Rose Law Group for legal expertise in land-use.

Dogtopia: Where Play Meets Training
In today’s dynamic world of pet care, Dogtopia emerges not just as another daycare but as a holistic center for your canine friends. Here, playful romps seamlessly blend with structured, impactful training sessions, creating a haven where dogs can both play and learn.
Imagine dropping your pup off for a fun day of play, and while they’re at it, they master essential commands like “sit” and “down.” Dogtopia’s daily training sessions, priced at $50, offer just that. Each session, spread across the day, instills vital skills, from the basics of “sit” and “down” to advanced techniques such as “loose leash walking.” To ensure the best outcome, a schedule of one or two visits a week over a minimum four-week period is suggested.
For those seeking a more tailored approach, private lessons provide a dedicated space for your dogs to overcome behavioral challenges and refine obedience skills, all for $150 a session. But, if you’re looking for something intensive, consider Dogtopia’s 10-day Board and Train camp. At $1,500, this all-inclusive
package promises a transformative journey. Dogs delve deep into on-leash obedience, engaging in allday group play, and return home adept in commands like “stay” and “touch.” And Dogtopia stands firmly behind its training, offering a one-year success guarantee.
Beyond structured lessons, the heart of Dogtopia lies in its commitment to ensuring every dog enjoys their time, is socially engaged, and stays active. Think of it as a retreat for your pet, where they receive the care, attention, and fun they deserve. Akin to a children’s daycare, Dogtopia prides itself on knowing every canine guest, delivering report cards, and building a transparent relationship with pet parents.
Dogtopia promises more than just a space; it promises a community. Each facility ensures only evaluated, vaccinated dogs play in a supervised environment, with pet parents having the delightful perk of watching their furry loved ones through live webcams.

Kids’ Corner From Backyard to Ballpark
Paradise Valley teen’s vision
transforms into the Fourth Annual
Western WIFFLE Ball
By Sondra Barr
It all began in the Paradise Valley backyard of 16-year-old Logan Rose during those quiet days of the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as a simple passion project has now transformed into a national phenomenon! Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 21, as Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 S. Ballpark Way, in Goodyear, hosts the Fourth Annual Western WIFFLE Ball Championship.
Rose’s idea wasn’t just about playing ball; it was about bringing joy, promoting outdoor activities, and ensuring everyone stayed active. From its humble backyard beginnings, the championship has grown to include over 75 teams from across the country. And that’s not all; it even attracted YouTube sensation, Eric Sim, the King of Juco, last year!
What’s Wiffle ball? If you’re new to the fun, imagine baseball’s cool cousin. Played with a plastic ball that can zig, zag, and zoom in unexpected ways, it offers thrills unlike any other.
This year, the festivities have shifted from Scottsdale Stadium to Goodyear Ballpark, a regular playground for baseball pros like
Championship.
the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds. The ceremonial first pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m., signaling the start of an exhilarating day.
Whether you’re a competitive player or just someone seeking recreational fun, there’s a spot for you and your team, which can range from three to five players. And for those who fancy their home run skills, step up for the Home Run Derby. It’s not just about winning; it’s about participating, laughing, and creating memories.
Rose, with his innovative spirit and aided by his father’s experience producing events, managed to create an event that celebrates sports, camaraderie, and community. His mantra? “If you’re doing something you enjoy, you can achieve so much more than you can imagine.” Given the Western WIFFLE Ball Championship’s success, his words ring true.
So, gear up for a day of unmatched Wiffle-tastic fun! And remember, it’s not just a game; it’s a testament to a young boy’s dream and determination.

Kids’ Corner Horizon High School’s Teraya Sigler Clinches Gold for U.S. Girls U19 Volleyball Team
Photo courtesy of Horizon High School
Horizon High School is buzzing with pride as its very own junior, Teraya Sigler, emerges as a world champion in the realm of international volleyball. Earlier this month, Sigler, who occupies the position of an outside hitter for the U.S. Girls U19 National Volleyball Team, led her squad to victory against a formidable Turkish team, bringing home the gold medal.
This win is particularly noteworthy as Sigler’s team is the inaugural group to ever be crowned the Girls U19 world champions. Their ascent to this title was not a matter of luck or chance, but a testament to the relentless dedication, countless hours of rigorous training, meticulous drills, and the sacrifices made while travelling the world to represent their country.
Throughout the championship tournament, Teraya Sigler stood out not only as a pivotal offensive weapon but also as a bulwark in the team’s defense. Her skills on the court were instrumental in her team’s dominion over their rivals, propelling them to secure the world championship with a close but decisive 3-2 record.
A further feather in her cap, Sigler’s exemplary performance didn’t go unnoticed. By the end of the tournament, she had accrued an impressive total of 13 points, with 12 of those coming from her kills and one from a formidable block. Recognizing her
prowess and contribution, she was rightfully dubbed one of the best outside hitters of the championship event.
When asked about her experience and the team’s journey, Sigler was effusive in her praise for her teammates, describing them as fighters with an unparalleled spirit and an insatiable fire to win, with every member playing their part toward a collective goal.
As celebrations continue and accolades pour in for the young champion, PVSchools join in the revelry. They extend their hearty congratulations to Teraya Sigler, marking her achievement not just as a victory for the school but as an inspiration for budding athletes everywhere.

TINTED TOPS! Kids’ Corner
By Sari Custer
This is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.
SUPPLIES
• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper
• 2 rubber bands
• 1 pencil
• 1 pair of scissors
• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)
CHALLENGE
• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate
• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle
• Cut the circle out from the paper plate
• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle
• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color
• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle
• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands
• Spin the top
ASK YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS
What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?
Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?

THE BENTLEY SCOTTSDALE
POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS:
PRESENTED BY TALKING STICK RETURNS NOVEMBER 4
20 • September 2023 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW myhyperlocalnews.com
Cover Story
By Sondra Barr
On the sunlit lawns of WestWorld of Scottsdale, the rhythmic sounds of galloping horses will once again fill the air as the 12th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Presented by Talking Stick returns this November 4. Touted as America’s most attended polo event, the championship promises action, adrenaline, and allure.
Nic Roldan, America’s top-tier polo player, makes a much-anticipated return, solidifying the event’s status on the global map. With his unmatched prowess and charismatic presence, Roldan’s participation is a beacon for polo aficionados. Once again, the championships tout both local and international teams, each bringing their distinct flair to the field, making for a riveting, cosmopolitan showdown.
Eight teams will vie for supremacy on the turf, representing regions from Texas to Wales, including PRIDE USA and USA Women’s All-Star team. The thrills commence at 10 a.m. with a vibrant contest between the Texas Polo Club - Garland and PRIDE USA. Sterling Jones, famed actor from hits like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Barbie Movie,” will rub shoulders with fellow polo enthusiasts on the field as a player on the PRIDE USA team. He will be joined by 3-goaler Juan Bollini and Vinny Sangaline. Garland standouts Oscar Chacon-Hidalgo and Alec Felhaber will also bring their skills to the field.
The second match at 12:15 p.m. promises to be electric as the Arizona Polo Club, sponsored by Lamborghini, faces off against the USA’s Women’s All-Star team. Local polo stalwarts Diego Florez and Andres Camacho, both with over 12 years of association with the event, will steer the men’s team, while Danielle Travis, Natalie Grancharov Camacho, and Carolyn Likas represent the women.
The day’s highlight will be the clash between the undefeated Bentley Scottsdale’s Aspen Valley Polo Club and the Wales Polo Team from Great Britain at 2:30 p.m. Leading Aspen is USA’s top player, 8-goaler Roldan alongside teammates 3-goal champion Grant Ganzi and patron Melissa Ganzi. Aspen’s fast action will met by some fierce competition as 5-goaler Jason Crowder, alongside Ricky Cooper, and 5-goaler Pete Webb promise a tough battle as they represent the Wales team. With seven Scottsdale titles under their belt, Aspen Valley is primed for an eighth victory.
Then in the final match-up starting at 4 p.m. the North Scottsdale Polo Club, led by another Arizona polo player, Josh Black, will play in a riveting match against New Orleans Polo Club.
Florez, whose ties to the event span 12 years, is not just a competitor but also a passionate advocate for polo. He champions the Scottsdale Polo Academy, which runs out of SandSpur Ranch, 12302 N. 93rd St., located in the heart of Scottsdale’s Cactus equestrian corridor. The academy’s aim, introduce enthusiasts to polo in a supportive and secure setting, emphasizing safety and foundational skills.
Natalie Grancharov Camacho, another ardent advocate for Arizona’s burgeoning polo scene, shares her infectious zeal for the sport, equating its intensity to mainstream sports like football and hockey. Her love affair with polo began at UC Davis. “Being around the team, the horses, it just felt right,” she reflects. For Camacho, polo is more than a sport; it’s an adrenaline-fueled passion.
Beyond the thrilling chukkers, attendees have a plethora of attractions. The Sunset Concert, crafted by leading concert organizers, will feature a top-tier DJ. Meanwhile, wine connoisseurs in attendance are in for a treat with the expanded wine tasting experience. As glasses clink and laughter resonates, enthusiasts can sample an array of wines, immersing in the rich palettes and discovering new favorites, while savoring culinary delights from renowned Scottsdale steakhouse, Maple & Ash. The event also embraces philanthropy, partnering with institutions like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Every sip, cheer, and celebration echoes with a purpose, highlighting the event’s commitment to weaving sport and society seamlessly.
And for those looking for a touch of glam, the Canine Couture Fashion Show by Lugari Pet Salon and The World’s Longest Catwalk Fashion Show, produced by Phoenix Fashion Week, are sure to dazzle.
Adding to the grandeur, the 2023 All-Porsche Grand Display is set to rev up the excitement. Porsche aficionados can revel in a visual feast, culminating in the Best of Show People’s Choice Award.
Whether you’re a fan of the sport, intrigued by its history, or looking for an exhilarating day out, the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships promise an unforgettable experience.

Hello Neighbor!
a quiet space. After that, I do yoga and light stretching to get my body and mind ready for the day. I always go for a walk to get in 10,000 steps to keep myself active. No matter what’s going on, it’s important to take care of yourself.
I’ll arrive at Daytryp Health really early before anybody and take a half hour for myself to think about what I need to do that day, and answer emails and calls. When my staff arrives, we’ll go over the day plan, but I love taking that time to focus and set intentions.
MY FAMILY IS… the most important group of people in my life.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… yoga. It wakes me up, keeps me healthy, and keeps me focused.
tremendous work ethic and how he lives his life. He treats everyone with integrity and respect. He never speaks poorly about anyone. He’s a very impressive person.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… something that my father said. It’s interesting how you can laugh out loud but not remember the joke and this is that instance. 8th Annual Runway to Success Fundraiser to Support GateWay Community College Students
GateWay Community College is gearing up for its annual gala, the 8th Annual Runway to Success, on Friday, Sept. 29, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. This critical fundraiser will be held at The Clayton House, 3719 N. 75th St., in Scottsdale.
An initiative that has seen tremendous support over the years, the event plays a crucial role in generating funds that bolster the college’s programs, provide scholarships, and ensure student success and retention. The evening, hosted by Event Chair Lisa Andrus and emceed by Carey Pena, will offer guests an immersive experience with a silent auction, dinner, and a unique segment where GateWay students take center stage. Through their stories, attendees will hear firsthand how GateWay transformed
their educational dreams into tangible realities.
For over half a century, GateWay Community College, a celebrated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), has been a beacon for education and workforce training. The institution, where over 50% of the students identify as Hispanic/Latinx, offers a vast selection of over 160 degrees and certificates tailored to diverse interests, passions, and schedules.
Ann Blatté, the development director at GateWay, expresses her hopes for a strong turnout this year, emphasizing the event’s significance. “Our students’ stories underscore their incredible journeys and the heights they’ve reached with their education at GateWay. We’re eager to showcase
these successes and raise funds to help develop tomorrow’s workforce.”
With a commendable economic impact of $85 million, GateWay propels over 1,500 graduates into the workforce annually. The college is especially recognized for its programs in nursing, healthcare, apprenticeships, and trades, which often lead to lucrative careers without the need for a four-year degree.
The impact of GateWay’s programs on its students is profound, as exemplified by alumna Robbie Mathews-Pierce. Having navigated her academic journey at GateWay, Mathews-Pierce achieved her associate in applied science in radiologic technology and subsequently completed her bachelor’s at Grand Canyon University. Today, she is employed as a radiologic technologist
at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center, attributing her success to GateWay’s comprehensive approach to education and abundant scholarship opportunities.
The upcoming Runway to Success is anticipated to be a highlight of the season, with its vibrant ambiance, touching student accounts, and the imperative mission to augment educational backing for future professionals.
For those interested in attending, tickets for the event start at $125, with sponsorship opportunities commencing at $1,500.

North Scottsdale’s Zamora Acupuncture Offers Hope for Back Pain and Nerve Pain Sufferers, Even After Failed Surgeries Charity
For those who have been struggling with chronic back pain or nerve pain, even after undergoing unsuccessful back surgery, there’s a beacon of hope in North Scottsdale: Zamora Acupuncture.
Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a Doctor of Acupuncture, is compassionate and loves what she does. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Dr. Zamora later earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Acupuncture and is board certified through the NCCAOM. She combines evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with FDA-approved modern technology to help decrease pain levels. Many of her patients have undergone surgery, tried multiple medications, physical therapy, and injections, but still suffer from conditions such as back pain, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatic pain.
We sat down with Dr. Zamora to learn more about Zamora Acupuncture.
SNN: What services do you offer that are unique?
KZ: I provide services for people who have been in pain for a long time. People come in with back pain, peripheral neuropathy, sciatic pain, and more. I provide evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern technology that has been FDA approved to decrease pain. I use my experience in healthcare to provide exceptional care. Often, the patients that I see have already tried everything else. They have done surgery, tried various medications, physical therapy, injections, and more. Many people think they are too far gone in terms of their pain. In many cases, this can lead to depression because they are unable to get out and enjoy life.
I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more pain-free life.
SNN: Is there hope for someone that’s had back surgery and still in pain?
KZ: Yes. I have treated many patients with pain after surgery successfully. We call this Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). The reality is that not every surgery is successful. Many times, patients have had multiple surgeries without success or with partial success.
SNN: If someone is not eligible for surgery due to weight or age, can you help them?
KZ: Absolutely. Acupuncture is a pain management option for these types of patients. I treat patients of all sizes and ages. Once pain levels decrease with acupuncture, many patients become more active and are able to lose weight easier. So that’s a very positive outcome! Additionally, with natural aging, there is no reason to suffer in pain. The treatments I provide can help decrease pain, even in cases of severe arthritis.
If you are suffering in pain, schedule a complimentary consultation at Zamora Acupuncture to discuss your condition. It’s never too late to start your journey to better health.
Zamora Acupuncture is located at 17787 N. Perimeter Dr., Suite A101, in Scottsdale. Learn more at www. AZacu.com. Call for a complimentary consultation 480-300-5767.

Furthermore, the event proudly announced AZPetVet as its title sponsor, with Tami Butcher and Cherie Malkoff at the helm as dedicated chairs.
For over two decades, Gabriel’s Angels has been at the forefront of providing pet therapy to vulnerable children across Arizona. The organization, a stalwart believer in the transformative power of pet therapy, equips children with seven vital core behaviors. Schools, shelters, and
community partners consistently extol the free pet therapy services, citing them as instrumental in changing young lives.
With an ever-increasing demand for these invaluable services, Melissa Steimer, CEO of Gabriel’s Angels, underscores the urgency. “The schools, group homes, domestic violence shelters, and other community partners we serve are telling us how our free pet therapy services are making such a positive difference in these children’s lives. We’re scrambling to keep up with the constantly increasing demand and hope to expand services to include even more children in need,” Steimer says.
Funds raised from the gala play a pivotal role in sustaining and expanding the pet therapy services. Given the sold-out history of the event, supporters are urged to secure their tickets — priced from $225 — without delay.

-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain? You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.
Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What To Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Unveiling the Silent Shifts: Hormonal Changes Before Menopause
By Dr. Alexandra Mayer, Ethos Integrative Medicine
Did you know that hormonal changes can start up to 10 years prior to menopause?
For many women, navigating this premenopausal period can be a frustrating and confusing experience as these subtle, silent shifts often go untreated.
Recognizing the symptoms and patterns that signal the start of peri-menopause can empower women to better understand their health and get the relief they deserve.
THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
The first hormones to change during peri-menopause are progesterone and testosterone. Unpredictable periods, heavy
bleeding, or heightened PMS symptoms could be whispers from the body, signaling that change is underway. These symptoms are commonly associated with declining progesterone levels.
Low testosterone can manifest in a range of symptoms including weight gain and fatigue, diminished muscle, strength and libido, skin changes, and difficulty concentrating. Many women also experience changes in their mood, encompassing feelings of anxiety, depression, and increased irritability.
While changes in estrogen typically occur closer to menopause itself, fluctuating estrogen levels can lead women to experience the hallmark symptoms of hot flashes, joint pain, night sweats, and moodiness. Additionally, estrogen often spikes right before it declines, causing
many women to experience weight gain, bloating, cramping, and heavy periods.
GETTING RELIEF FROM SYMPTOMS
While peri-menopause is not commonly talked about, it is a common experience for women to be missing their mojo before menopause! Unfortunately, with a one-size-fits-all approach, many women are left to suffer until their labs are “out of reference range.” So what’s the solution?
Partnering with a physician that is well-versed in the intricacies of perimenopause is key for navigating these silent shifts with grace. Working with a women’s hormone specialist can ensure that accurate, comprehensive labs are run at the right time of your cycle, and that optimal lab values are considered when creating your individualized treatment plan.

Simple Ways to Reduce Your Daily Sugar Intake
By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
Sugar seems to be in almost everything we eat and often it is hidden in foods that we least expect. Overconsumption can lead to chronic health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, fatigue and more. Sugar can directly inhibit the immune system and cause inflammation in the body.
TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR DAILY SUGAR INTAKE
Eliminate sugary beverages. Sodas, energy drinks, fancy flavored coffee drinks and juices are very high in sugar. Even those “healthy” premade smoothies/juices can be loaded with sugar. Calories from sugary drinks do not satisfy our appetite like whole real foods do so we tend to consume larger quantities. Instead try the following:
• Sparkling water and add lemon or lime to flavor.
• Herbal tea (without caffeine counts as water) and try it iced in the hot weather months.
• If you drink coffee, you can add stevia, which is a natural sweetener, or unsweetened alternative milk.
• And just plain water: most of us do not drink enough of it anyway.
Read the labels and look for hidden sugars. We know the obvious sugar rich foods such as sodas, candy bars and desserts. However, there are many hidden sugars in the processed foods we eat. Added sugar can be found in ketchup, BBQ sauce, salad dressings, canned soups, and spaghetti sauces. We can also find added sugars in alternative milk. It is important to read the ingredient labels and choose foods that do not have these added sugars. Choose unsweetened alternative milks and reduced or no sugar sauces. Or even better, make your own at home.
Watch out for “healthy” processed foods. Even foods from a health food store can have high amounts of sugar. Hidden sugar can be found in granola bars, protein bars, premade fruit smoothies and some
dried fruits. Always check the labels for the added sugars. Alternatives for these snacks can include: a handful of nuts or trail mix with dried fruit with no added sugar, a hard-boiled egg, or fresh fruit with a protein source (apple slices with nut butter).
Eat more protein and full fat foods. When you eat protein rich foods, your blood sugar does not spike like it does with sugar rich foods. Adding in protein snacks throughout the day can help balance blood sugar and decrease those sugar cravings. Many of us have been programed to think that fat is a bad thing, especially when you may want to lose weight and cut calories. Unfortunately, the “low fat” or “fat free” options typically contain more sugar, thus adding more calories. Healthy full fat foods also satisfy our hunger, which will help cut those sugar cravings. Plus, they just taste better! I encourage patients to choose full fat Greek yogurt or full fat cottage cheese in moderation.
Decreasing sugar in your diet has many benefits, including potential weight loss, reducing inflammation, strengthening the immune system, and improving chronic diseases and overall health. Your naturopathic doctor can further individualize treatment that is tailored to your specific health goals.

Estate Planning for the Blended Family
By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
In first marriages, a couple generally have identical goals for their estate planning: take care of the surviving spouse for as long as he or she lives, then distribute what’s left to their children.
But second marriages can be different. The blended family – his children, her children and sometimes their children as well – makes for more complicated planning. Each spouse may have separate assets as well as their joint, community assets. Both usually want at least some of their assets to go to their own children after they die. At the same time, they want to make sure the surviving spouse has enough to live on.
With a blended family, a couple has to put a plan in place if they want to be sure their goals are met. This won’t happen automatically.
Think about one of the most famous blended families – the Brady Bunch. What happens if Carol and Mike have all their assets in joint tenancy and don’t have a will or trust? If Mike is the first to die, Carol will get all the couple’s joint assets. But then what happens when Carol dies? Without a will or trust, state law steps in. Arizona law says that Carol’s children get her assets. That
means the three girls get everything, and Mike’s boys are left out. I’ll leave it to your imagination whether those girls are going to share the wealth. If Mike and Carol want to divide everything between all six of the kids, they need a plan to assure that will happen.
Mike and Carol may want to be sure that the survivor of them is well cared for, but they also want to be sure their own kids share in what’s left after they are both gone. They can plan for this in their trust. The trust can provide that some of their assets go to an irrevocable trust at the first spouse’s death. The surviving spouse is the beneficiary during his or her lifetime. The trust, however, says where the assets left in the trust go when the survivor passes, and the survivor can’t change that. This way the first spouse to die is assures that there are assets distributed to his or her children when the second passes.
There are many factors going into estate planning for the blended family. However, most couples do have one common goal, which is doing the right thing for everyone involved: themselves, their spouse, their children, and their spouse’s children. A good estate planning attorney can help put together a plan that accomplishes your goals. We offer a free initial consultation. Just call us at (602) 375-6752 and check out our website, libbybanks.com.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“Oppenheimer”
The true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s work towards the creation of the atomic bomb and its social fallout.
"Oppenheimer" is one of the most devastating motion pictures to emerge from the studio system in a long while, both in its presentation of its subject and his actions. This isn't a movie about triumph in the face of potential destruction; it's about a selfish man, nay, a selfish group, whose desire for selfpreservation threatens our very existence. Through clever editing and visuals, in both subtext and overt message, we witness the lead's gradual realization of the consequences of his actions— but only after he has acted to save himself. He complies until the deed is done, selecting his moral stance when it suits him. Meanwhile, the supporting characters either defend or confront him. The entire experience is suffocating yet undeniably brilliant.
“Talk
To Me”
A group of teens go too far in a supernatural game and suffer the consequences.
"Talk To Me" possesses a fury in its terror that's rarely seen. Each scene virtually chokes the air out of you, making you feel as if you're in as much danger as the characters. When the violence ensues, it's visceral; you can't look away. Coupled with a standout performance from newcomer Sophie Wilde, this film provides an experience that's both terrifying and emotionally devastating. It's a new installment in the horror canon that will, hopefully, influence many works to come.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”
The four mutant brothers have to step into responsibility when the world is at risk.
"Mutant Mayhem" serves well to introduce younger fans to the series, while also paying tribute to longtime aficionados. It's a solid, entertaining flick, bolstered by the chemistry among the four leads who truly capture the
'teenage' essence implied in the title. While the characterization and story may be somewhat lacking and familiar, the unique and thrilling animation and action more than compensate. The humor appeals to audiences of all ages. It's a fun, lighthearted romp, even if there isn't much depth to delve into.
combined with a thunderous score from Bear McCreary, puts the finishing touch on this film. It's a commendable addition to the creature feature genre.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”
The crew of the cargo ship Demeter find themselves fighting for their lives upon realizing there’s a stowaway onboard: Dracula.
This film is engagingly surprising, given that it's essentially "Alien" at sea, substituting the Xenomorph for Dracula. It's appeal lies in the direction, which conjures an isolating ambiance, thanks both to the confined space of the ship and the vast emptiness of the surrounding ocean. The narrative delivers a raw brutality that makes viewers flinch, especially a scene in the third act that stands out for its sheer cruelty and viciousness. One drawback is the excessively dark visuals, often obscuring the on-screen action. Nevertheless, the cast's unwavering commitment,

The Flagstaff Trails Passport: FROM FOREST TREKS TO BOUTIQUE RETREATS
As trails lead to discoveries, Flagstaff’s hotel scene unfolds like a trove of stories waiting to be experienced.
Tucked in the vast expanses of the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest, Flagstaff unveils its newest charm - the Flagstaff Trails Passport. It’s not merely a guide but an invitation to traverse lesser-trodden paths, diving deep into the fabric of a city that fuses nature, culture, and luxury.
The Flagstaff Trails Passport operates with a simple yet engaging premise: check-in at the curated list of local trails, and based on the level of difficulty, earn points. The more you explore, the more rewards you gather. These range from commemorative stickers for just a single trail point, to wooden postcards for 5 points, and even a heartwarming opportunity to give back with a donation made in your name at 10 points to the FTI (Flagstaff Trails Initiative). Passionate hikers hitting the 15-point mark can snag a stylish fanny pack for future adventures.
Each trail in the passport beckons with a unique allure. One-point trails, like the Arizona Trail through Picture Canyon or the Campbell Mesa trail system, offer gentle strolls for those seeking serenity. Meanwhile, the Kachina Trail and the Little Elden Spring Trail, falling under the two-point category, up the ante a bit. And for the thrillseekers, the three-point rank awaits with challenges like the rigorous O’Leary Peak Trail and the lofty Kendrick Mountain Trail.
Little America Hotel Flagstaff emerges as a blend of elegance and wilderness. Located amidst 500 acres of pristine Ponderosa Pine Forest, this AAA Four Diamondrated hotel exudes luxury at every corner. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the sprawling rooms to the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. But it’s not all about the outdoors. The Silver Pine restaurant offers culinary delights, a perfect end to a day spent at nearby attractions like Meteor Crater.
Meanwhile, the High Country Motor Lodge resonates with younger travelers. Set just off Route 66, this boutique-style, pet-friendly hotel merges vintage aesthetics with modern vibes. Its proximity to Riordon Mansion and Northern Arizona University adds to its charm. But it’s the evening entertainment, tailored for Millennials and Gen Zs, that truly sets it apart, offering a fresh twist on Flagstaff hospitality.
Not too far off, the Weatherford Hotel stands as a testament to Flagstaff’s rich history. Dating back to 1897, this quirky-chic establishment retains its historic charm while catering to modern sensibilities. It’s a slice of history, positioned a heartbeat away from Route 66, allowing guests to relive the tales of old while reveling in contemporary comforts.
Outside the walls of these establishments, Flagstaff unfolds its myriad offerings. From exhilarating mountain biking trails, checking out the stars at the Lowell Observatory, leaf peeping in autumn’s hues, to visiting The Museum of Northern Arizona (established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens), to miles of Route 66 that echo with the mountain city’s vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone.
Of course, traversing trails and exploring Flagstaff’s gems can ignite a hunger only the city can satiate. James Beard nominees include Proper Meats + Provisions, Atria Restaurant, and Shift Kitchen + Bar, and are ready to tantalize the taste buds.
In Flagstaff, trails don’t just lead to nature’s wonders, but to boutique retreats, gastronomic adventures, and historic tales. So, grab your passport, let Flagstaff guide your steps and heartbeats, and dive deep into the city’s many tales. They’re all waiting to be written in your travel chronicles.
It’s a good idea to visit the experts at the Visitor Center, 1 E. Route 66, upon your Flagstaff arrival, as they can assist with recommendations and itinerary things to do.
