Arizona Live Music Cooperative’s Unique Open Mic: Transforming Local Musicians into Rock Stars Every Monday
THE ARIZONA LIVE MUSIC COOPERATIVE IS INVITING MUSIC LOVERS AND PERFORMERS TO A UNIQUE OPEN MIC EXPERIENCE EVERY MONDAY NIGHT. Unlike the typical open mic night held at a bustling bar or restaurant, this event is entirely about the music. It’s a listening room, free of distractions like clanking dishes or idle chatter, designed to make each performer feel like a rock star.
Held at the 500-seat venue of Genesis in the building that houses Alice Cooper’s The Rock, located at 13625 N. 32nd St., this weekly event kicks off with a lottery sign-up at 4:45 p.m. The music starts at 5:30 p.m., featuring a twosong rotation of performers. The cooperative makes an effort to include as many musicians as possible before the event wraps up at 9:30 p.m.
The Arizona Live Music Cooperative is a nonprofit organization with a goal to support and elevate the state’s live music scene. Its vision for the open mic nights is not only to provide a space for performers to share their talent, but also to ensure they sound and feel like true rock stars on stage. To facilitate this, the venue is equipped with professional sound and lighting systems, video equipment, and a full 88-key keyboard.
“We want everyone who steps on our stage to have that rock star moment,” says a representative from the cooperative. “This is a pure listening room. It’s all about the music.”
In an effort to extend the reach of these unique performances, each event is live streamed on the cooperative’s Facebook page. This feature allows those unable to attend in person to still enjoy the diverse talents of the Arizona music scene.
While there is no official cover charge for this event, the cooperative suggests a $5 donation. These contributions support the cooperative’s ongoing work in providing a superior space for local musicians to perform. However, this is simply a recommendation, not a requirement – the Arizona Live Music Cooperative insists that the main goal is to encourage community engagement with live music, irrespective of one’s ability to donate.
Whether you’re a musician or just someone who appreciates quality live music, this unique open mic night at Genesis offers an unparalleled listening experience. In this venue, the music takes center stage, offering performers and listeners alike an unforgettable night of passion and performance.

Ability360 Presents Independence Cup
on July 4
First-ever inclusive public eSports tournament benefits the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer team.
INDEPENDENCE DAY THIS YEAR WILL HOLD A NEW EXCITEMENT FOR ESPORTS ENTHUSIASTS AND SUPPORTERS OF INCLUSIVE SPORTS, AS ABILITY360 INTRODUCES ITS INAUGURAL INDEPENDENCE CUP. Scheduled for July 4, this groundbreaking eSports tournament will spotlight inclusivity in gaming, with the fast-paced game Rocket League taking center stage. The event seeks to raise funds for the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer Team, with corporate sponsorships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
Player registration opened on May 26, and the event is already attracting interest from across the gaming community. “We’re very excited about this new opportunity to bring attention to our diverse supports and programs for people with disabilities,” says Chris Rodriguez, president and CEO of Ability360.
The Independence Cup promises not only thrilling Rocket League action, but also a platform to celebrate adaptive sports. Power Soccer, the game loved and played by those who Ability360’s tournament seeks to honor, shares a common theme with Rocket League - playing soccer in non-traditional ways.
Power Soccer caters specifically to individuals with disabilities, with players using power wheelchairs in place of conventional soccer maneuvers. Over the years, it has gained international recognition as an adaptive sport, with tournaments taking place worldwide.
The Independence Cup pays tribute to Ability360 Power Soccer players Austin Cuaderno and Everett Frahm, who were cherished members of the community. Tony Jackson, Ability360 Power Soccer coordinator, athlete, and coach, says, “”The Ability360 Independence Cup is a wonderfully fitting way to honor Austin and Everett, both incredible power soccer athletes and dear friends. Funds raised will help us continue sharing the sport they loved with a new generation of adaptive sport athletes.”
All proceeds raised from the Independence Cup will directly benefit the Ability360 Phoenix Rising Power Soccer Program, fueling its mission to make adaptive sports accessible to all.
Meghan Fable, director of development at Ability360, encourages anyone interested in supporting the event to reach out. As the organization presents its first-ever inclusive gaming tournament, Ability360 is setting an example for the industry, highlighting the significant role inclusive gaming plays in the broader sporting landscape.
In a world where eSports are rapidly gaining popularity, the Ability360 Independence Cup serves a dual purpose: fostering a sense of community and inclusivity in the gaming world, while honoring the legacy of two beloved athletes. As Rocket League players gear up for the tournament, the spirit of the event echoes far beyond the virtual playing field: it’s about empowerment, remembrance, and the joy of sport. Detour Company Theatre will present “Little Shop of Horrors” and “James and the Giant Peach” at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
DETOUR COMPANY THEATRE IS BRINGING DOUBLE THE FUN TO SCOTTSDALE WITH ITS PRODUCTION OF “LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS” AND “JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH” JUNE 9 THROUGH 11 AT SCOTTSDALE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, 7380 E. SECOND ST.
Sophie Stern, who plays Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors,” is excited to perform a lead role in one of her favorite musicals.
“I love Detour, and I love how people come together and do shows,” Stern says.
“I love acting with Detour because we are a big family and a big community. The audience will be impressed that we are doing such a hard show.”
out into the audience and fills them with a newfound passion for the artistic process.”
for a community that is severely underrepresented in the visual and performing arts.
Detour Company Theatre provides theater training and performance experiences for adults with developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities, providing them authentic opportunities to develop artistry, demonstrate courage and collaboration, experience joy and participate in the sharing of musical theater with the entire community.
“’James and the Giant Peach’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ are two stories about success, family and community,” says Detour Director Simon Ridley. “We are thrilled to be back at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts to share these marvelous musicals!”
In the first of these two plays, “Little Shop of Horrors” follows meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn as he stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” after his coworker crush. This R&Bsinging carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to Seymour as long as he keeps feeding it. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-thisworld origins and intent toward global domination!
Following “Little Shop of Horrors” will be “James and the Giant Peach,” a whimsical and magical journey about one boy out to change his life and find a real family. Based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, “James and the Giant Peach” features a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald.
“James and the Giant Peach” actor Jessica Stamm has been acting with Detour since 2006 and previously acted as Marcy Park in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
“I love acting at Detour because I like to be different characters,” Stamm says. “I’m excited for the audience to see these next two shows: ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ The audience will love it in ‘James in the Giant Peach’ when the two evil aunts come on stage!”
Director Andrea Head looks forward to using these shows as a space to explore, create, support, and enjoy theatre as a community.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to tell these stories on the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts stage,” Head says. “We hope the love we have as a theater company spills
Detour Company Theatre stages its productions in June and January of each year at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, where Detour is a resident company. Detour creates a vital space for honing creativity, building community, and shaping social progress. Detour will have two showings of “Little Shop of Horrors” on Friday, June 9, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, June 10, at 3 p.m. “James and the Giant Peach” has two showings on Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 11, at 3 p.m. Admission is free for all productions, but RSVP is mandatory for all planning to attend. “We look forward to this fundraiser every year,” says Ken Barro, co-owner of Barro’s Pizza. “Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children has been instrumental in helping so many Arizona families during a very trying time. Thanks to our loyal customers, we’ve raised more than $221,000 to date and are excited to support them again this year.”
Established in 2013, ACFC was born out of the heart-wrenching experience of Chrisie Funari, who lost her young daughter, Ava, to cancer. Funari channeled her pain and the struggles of navigating Ava’s treatment into a mission to empower families in similar situations.
ACFC ensures these families have access to necessary medical treatments, secure housing, and continual support. The foundation’s efforts have since assisted
hundreds of local families and remain committed to expanding this reach.
“We are so grateful for Barro’s Pizza’s continued support,” says Funari president and founder of ACFC. “Their contribution has had a significant impact on our ability to provide critical services and support to children and their families affected by cancer. We can’t thank them enough for their commitment to our cause and for making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are proud to have partners like Barro’s Pizza in our community.”
Barro’s Pizza, a beacon of local enterprise and tradition, is known far and wide for its unique pizza recipe. Passed down from Grandma Angelina Barro, who migrated from Italy in the 1930s, the pizza boasts a thick crust, tangy, and sweet spiced sauce that has won over many a palate. The restaurant chain operates 47 locations in Maricopa, Pima, and Pinal Counties, and one in McKinney, Texas. In addition to their signature pizzas, the menu includes wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, glutenfree options, desserts, and a variety of beverages. They also cater to different dining preferences with dine-in, take-out, delivery, online ordering, in-app ordering, and catering services.

AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan Helps Bring Dreams to Life with Creative Photo Contest
AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office are inviting kindergarten through 12th grade students across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the “My Picture-Perfect Career” photo contest. Summer vacation is an ideal time for families to talk with children about what they’d like to be when they grow up and explore potential career interests with trips to Arizona libraries, museums, and other local handson learning resources. Taking and sharing pictures while discussing job aspirations is the goal of this summer’s “My Picture-Perfect Career” Photo Contest, which is open to students through 12th grade across Arizona.
Students are encouraged to take or pose for a photo representing themselves in their dream job. They can take a selfie, pose for a picture, invite friends and family into the shot or come up with their own creative ideas. The final photo just needs to visually communicate their vision of a dream job – whether the participant is in front of or behind the camera! A total of 10 winners will be selected across the state and receive $529 towards opening a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from across Arizona’s 15 counties.
The goal of the photo contest is to increase awareness of the AZ529 Plan and pave a path for another generation of students to achieve their post-secondary dreams through proper savings. Winners will be honored by Treasurer Kimberly Yee during a special ceremony at the state capitol in September. Be advised that by submitting photos to this contest, you acknowledge and agree that the photo may be publicly displayed.
In total, $5,290 will be distributed to 10 students to assist in saving for their educational plans beyond high school. Parents or guardians of the winners will be responsible for setting up an AZ529 account if an account does not already exist. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-
free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school, and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-fordollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.
For more information about AZ529, visit az529.gov. For complete contest details and rules, visit az529.gov/ photocontest.

Education Local Girl Scouts Earn Gold Award, Most Prestigious Award in the World of Girl Scouting
Photos courtesy of Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council
Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) awarded its most prestigious honor, the Gold Award, to 22 local girls this year. This
distinguished award recognizes Girl Scouts in grades nine through 12 who act in their communities by tackling an issue they are passionate about and developing sustainable solutions to local, national, and global challenges.
“This year’s Gold Award honorees exemplify fantastic leadership and civic engagement by dedicating themselves to addressing important causes and taking action to make the world a better place,” says Christina Spicer, co-CEO of GSACPC. “As a nationally recognized symbol of leadership, the Gold Award is a truly remarkable achievement.”
According to Mary Mitchell, co-CEO of GSACPC, this year’s Gold Award winners tackled prominent issues faced by their communities by establishing designated mental health spaces for students on high school campuses, fighting food insecurity in Indigenous communities, building the first dog park located in a national park, designing inspirational campus murals with worldrenowned artists, collecting bikes and helmets for children of military families, creating online resource platforms for youth and much more.
“The Gold Award allows Girl Scouts to showcase the problem-solving, communication and time management skills they have learned throughout their experience in the organization and prepares young leaders by giving them the confidence to succeed,” says Mitchell. “By earning the Gold Award distinction, the 22 awardees join a legacy of Girl Scouts that have used their passion and persistence to make a lasting positive impact on the community.”
Recipients of the Gold Award not only change the world for good and establish themselves as community leaders, but awardees can also take advantage of unique scholarship opportunities, are entitled to enlist at a higher pay grade when they join the military, distinguish themselves among the competition in the college admissions process, and when entering the workforce.
AMONG THE 2023 GOLD AWARD GIRL SCOUTS WINNERS IS ONE FROM PARADISE VALLEY:
MISHA GHAFOURI Iranian Youth Connections
As a first generation Iranian American,
Ghafouri often felt there wasn’t a welcoming space for Iranian American youth to connect with one another and learn from passionate Iranian leaders, which inspired her Gold Award project, Iranian Youth Connections. This online platform is dedicated to creating a welcoming space for Iranian youth to connect, learn more about Iranian culture, and gain skills to become successful leaders in their community. To ensure her project’s success and sustainability, Ghafouri created a website and partnered with the Iranian American Society of Arizona to provide high-quality mentorship and programs for Iranian youth. She was also invited to speak at their annual gala and held a booth at the annual Persian New Year Festival with an audience of 5,000 people. Her Gold Award project helped her gain confidence and professional networking skills that have helped her share the importance of her cultural heritage. As a Girl Scout of 14 years, she will continue to amplify her voice and advocate for the Iranian American community at a local and global level.

RAISIN' THE ROOF WITH SCIENCE!
Unleash your inner scientist and make raisins dance in this fun, fizzy kitchen chemistry experiment!
Want a reason to play with your food? While adults may discourage us from doing so, food items can teach us a lot about science, especially chemistry. And it can be fun too! In this activity, you’ll learn about how vinegar and baking soda create a reaction and form carbon dioxide bubbles. When a raisin joins the (dance) party, the bubbles that are formed stick to the raisins and their many wrinkles, causing them to float to the top. When the raisins reach the top, bubbles tend to pop and release the gas which, in turn, allows the raisins to sink back down to the bottom.
Supplies
• 1 clear plastic cup
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 to 7 raisins
• Water
• Vinegar Challenge
• Fill you cup about halfway with water
• Add one teaspoon of baking soda and stir until dissolved in water
• Add 6 to 7 raisins into the cup
• Very slowly pour in vinegar until cup is three-fourths full
• Watch the raisins dance
What did you think would happen to the raisins? Did they surprise you? What happened? What do you think is causing the bubble to form? What type of gas is it? You can try this experiment with other small fruits–how do you think the reaction would
be different if you used grapes? Or a blueberry. What about a cherry tomato?
There are lots of different ways to learn about science in your very own home. Science is all around us, and as long as you ask and have supervision, it is great to be curious about what other experiments you can conduct. Visit azscience.org and find experiments just like this!

22 • June/July 2023 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW myhyperlocalnews.com Cover Story Zamora Acupuncture Offers Hope for Back Pain and Nerve Pain Sufferers, Even After Failed Surgeries Dr. Kourtney Zamora, D.Ac., specializes in evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture, helping patients alleviate pain and improve their quality of life.
For those who have been struggling with chronic back pain or nerve pain, even after undergoing unsuccessful back surgery, there’s a beacon of hope in the area: Zamora Acupuncture. Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a Doctor of Acupuncture, has been providing pain-relieving acupuncture for over nine years. She relocated to the Valley with her family from Washington state in January 2022 and has since become an active member of the community.
Starting her healthcare journey as a nursing assistant at the age of 16, Dr. Zamora has always considered herself a natural caregiver. She’s grateful for finding her calling for healthcare early on in life. As a healthcare provider, she is compassionate and loves what she does. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Dr. Zamora later earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in Acupuncture and is board certified through the NCCAOM.
In a recent Q&A, Dr. Zamora explained that she offers unique services for those who have been in pain for extended periods, often after trying various other treatments. She combines evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with FDAapproved modern technology to help decrease pain levels. Many of her patients have undergone surgery, tried multiple medications, physical therapy, and injections, but still suffer from conditions such as back pain, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatic pain.
Dr. Zamora’s most rewarding experience comes from witnessing her patients’ progress and improvement throughout their treatments. Patients who initially feel impatient for results eventually experience the benefits of acupuncture, leading to a more positive outlook on life.
We sat down with Dr. Zamora to learn more about Zamora Acupuncture.
PVV: What services do you offer that are unique?
KZ: I provide services for people that have been in pain for a long time. People come in with back pain, peripheral neuropathy, sciatic pain, and more. I provide evidence-based traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern technology that has been FDA approved to decrease pain. I use my experience in healthcare to provide exceptional care. Often, the patients that I see have already tried everything else. They have done surgery, tried various medications, physical therapy, injections, and more.
Many people think they are too far gone in terms of their pain. In many cases, this can lead to depression because they are unable to get out and enjoy life. I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more pain-free life.
PVV: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
KZ: The most rewarding part of my job is seeing how patients progress through their treatments and get better. The first phase of treatment can be slow moving. At this phase, patients are often impatient for results because they have been in pain for so long. During the second phase of treatment, patients begin to feel the benefits of acupuncture. They become hopeful, I see an improvement in their mood, and they tell me things like, “I was able to take my dog for a walk without my sciatic pain acting up the rest of the day. I slept all night without waking up with nerve pain in my feet.” And “I was able to complete 18 holes of golf, which I haven’t been able to do in years!”
PVV: Is there hope for someone that’s had back surgery and still in pain?
KZ: Yes. I have treated many patients with pain after surgery successfully. We call this Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). The reality is that not every surgery is successful. Many times, patients have had multiple surgeries without success or with partial success.
PVV: If someone is not eligible for surgery due to weight or age, can you help them?
KZ: Absolutely. Acupuncture is a pain management option for these types of patients. I treat patients of all sizes and ages. Once pain levels decrease with acupuncture, many patients become more active and are able to lose weight easier. So that’s a very positive outcome! Additionally, with natural aging, there is no reason to suffer in pain. The treatments I provide can help decrease pain, even in cases of severe arthritis.
If you are suffering in pain, schedule a complimentary consultation at Zamora Acupuncture to discuss your condition. It’s never too late to start your journey to better health.
You can find Zamora Acupuncture on the web at www.AZacu.com to learn more. Call for a complimentary consultation 480-300-5767.

Hello Neighbor!
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… music. I would eventually starve without food and really miss my husband, but music completes me!
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “50 First Dates.” What could be more romantic than falling in love every day— even if it’s with Adam Sandler!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a singer. I practiced belting out songs into my hairbrush all the time! When I discovered I was unable to carry a tune, but realized I could LITERALLY talk to a wall, radio was the logical career choice.
encouragement keep me going through the good and not so good times. He truly lifts me up!
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Kyle Cruz was doing a live shot from spring training on “Good Morning Arizona.” She tossed a baseball to a young fan on camera that missed his mitt and hit his head. The youngster was not hurt but she was mortified and the anchors in the studio were rolling in laughter. I’ve also experienced rare moments of embarrassment during live broadcasts, so I felt for her!
HI, MY NAME IS… Karen Dalessandro. I’VE LIVED IN PARADISE VALLEY FOR TWO YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… it has EVERYTHING! Amazing restaurants, shopping, spectacular mountain views, biking trails, hiking. We’re literally surrounded by beauty!
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… a morning walk with my dog, Bodie, at Andaz Resort, a couple hours preparing content for my afternoon radio show, a quick workout before my KSLX 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. air shift, and getting acclimated to my new “hometown.” I also enjoy networking lunches and dinner with friends and co-workers.
MY FAMILY IS… my hubby Doug and our Shih Tzu Bichon mix Bodie.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… see above! But there was one night (with cocktails involved), I got up to perform The Go Go’s “She’s Got the Beat” and promptly retired my karaoke career the next morning.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my husband of 30-plus years, Doug. His constant support and
THE PERFECT DAY IS… driving around town with the convertible down, a solid workout with yoga at Village Club Gainey, and an outdoor patio dinner with Doug and Bodie catching one of the amazing Arizona sunsets. Bonus points if I can add a couple hours of shopping!
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… it’s impossible to pick just one. There are SO many local organizations doing incredible work! But I’m especially fond of Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Centers. It offers teens an immersive experience in the arts, music, dance, video/audio production, computer labs, and more. I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of the students - it’s a life changing program for them.
MY LIFE IS… full of unique experiences! My mom always told me I needed to write a book because my job is so interesting and different. From interviewing former presidents to
hanging out backstage with rock stars, emceeing local and national events, and connecting with people on a personal level every single day. It’s not an ordinary job and I’m blessed to have a career that affords these amazing opportunities.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… the gift of health. Not a gift money can buy, and it’s not guaranteed. You can do everything right and still face a crisis that changes your life. I’m so grateful for it every day!
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Doug and I have traveled all over the world. It’s what we do! We’ve visited six of the seven world continents including incredible trips to Cuba, Hong Kong, and South Africa. The Galapagos Islands was HIGH on my bucket list and I I checked it off a few years ago. We’re now having fun exploring Arizona and all the beauty of the southwest.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED… knowledge is power. When you cease to learn, you cease to grow.

Community D-Backs Score a Grand Slam with 100-Year-Old Hospice Patient
By Lin Sue Flood

Growing up in the Babe Ruth era, Myra Blaker has been a lifelong baseball fan. After moving to Phoenix from Chicago, she pledged loyalty to her hometown Arizona Diamondbacks — even posting their game schedule on her front door. In the weeks leading up to their home opener at Chase Field, all she talked about was baseball.
As a surprise, Blaker’s Hospice of the Valley care team made a great play — pitching her as the inaugural guest of D-Backs Wishes for Seniors. This special program grants once-in-a-lifetime experiences to deserving seniors and is sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Arizona Complete Health.
“We are so honored to partner with the devoted nurses and social workers at Hospice of the Valley to deliver these incredible experiences,” says Debbie Castaldo,
D-Backs’ senior VP for Corporate & Community Impact. “It was wonderful to see Myra rooting for her team. She was living her best life!”
On the night of the game, the team covered all the bases. Blaker, who turns 101 in September, got the VIP treatment — premium parking, great seats, free food and drinks, including a beer she insisted on finishing! Hospice of the Valley nurse Kelly McGovern and social worker Renee Adams came along to monitor her oxygen and make sure Blaker had the time of her life. Paul Piperata, her caregiver at Weyrich Health Care Center in Scottsdale, also joined the fun, and kindly arranged for a seven-passenger van with wheelchair access.
As they took their seats near the on-deck circle, Blaker whispered, “Look how close we are! We can even see what they keep in their pockets!”
Blaker’s daughter, Laura, says she couldn’t remember
seeing her mom so excited. “The D-Backs hit a homerun with Mom. She loved every single minute and never stopped smiling!”
About the fifth inning, McGovern started to wonder if the centenarian might want to leave early. “Not a chance,” Blaker insisted. “I won’t miss a single play!”
Just when the baseball fanatic thought nothing could top the magical evening, D-Backs legend Luis Gonzalez came by to visit. “I can’t believe they are making such a fuss over me!” she gushes.
“She will never forget this,” says Adams. “At Hospice of the Valley, we’re honored to help make our patients’ dreams come true. We are so grateful to be part of this tremendous night.”

Healthy Summer Travel Tips Health
By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
It’s summertime! Many of us are preparing for some fun summer getaways. It is important to remain healthy while traveling. Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family healthy while you enjoy those welldeserved vacations.
STAY ACTIVE: If you have a long flight, make sure to get up at least once per hour and walk a bit for better circulation. Find fun family activities that include hiking and exploring. Take a nice long walk after a big meal. If on a long road trip, take breaks at a park or an area where everyone in the car can enjoy some movement.
IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT: I always travel with the immune system essentials. I bring vitamin C and vitamin D for general support. This is great to take the days leading up to travel or daily to enhance the immune response. I also like to bring elderberry for the entire family. Elderberry is an herb that is great for supporting and boosting the immune system. You can take it daily for immune maintenance.
DIGESTION: I have many patients who struggle with constipation and traveling does not help. Our diets are usually different while traveling and water intake is much lower. These two things alone can contribute to constipation. A naturopathic physician can work with you prior to vacation to help support the gastrointestinal tract to find the root cause of constipation or provide helpful tips to ensure regularity while traveling.
EATING OUT: Food is one of the most exciting parts of a vacation and I love exploring new places to eat and trying new foods. Often, we go off our regular eating habits while on vacation. It can be helpful to find a place to stay that has a kitchen, this way you can plan to make a few meals. I always recommend healthy road trip snacks for those long trips. Trail mix, fruit, and healthy bars are always a great idea and if you have snacks packed you are less likely to stop at a convenience store and grab those less healthy options.
HYDRATION: When we travel, our water intake typically decreases. We do not want the burden of having to stop so frequently to use the bathroom. When we get dehydrated, we can have more inflammation in the body. It is important to drink at least half your weight in ounces each day. I will often suggest adding electrolytes while traveling too. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated while traveling.
STRESS: The goal of vacation is to leave the stress behind but sometimes traveling can be stressful. If possible, plan some “down time” while on vacation to recuperate and relax. You can also work with your naturopathic physician prior to traveling to support those stress hormones prior to a big trip.
Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com

Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing Offer Resources, Support for Seniors with Hearing Loss
By Sherri Collins
Most of us know someone who has hearing loss. Some of you may be experiencing hearing loss yourself. Oftentimes people dismiss signs of hearing loss as “no big deal.” In reality, hearing loss is a very big deal. Hearing loss can impact all the areas of your life, including relationships, health, and safety. It can also be linked to depression and memory loss, an early indicator of dementia.
While the likelihood of developing dementia exists, there are ways to prevent hearing loss:
• Protect your ears. Keep music or TV volumes low, especially when you are wearing headphones. If you have headphones on and someone else can hear your music, the volume is too high.
• Don’t ignore your hearing loss. If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, see a hearing healthcare professional right away to start combating the symptoms.
• Tackle the hearing loss head on. Don’t assume hearing loss will go away on its own. It won’t. The sooner you get assistance with your hearing loss, the more likely you are to possibly prevent early dementia.
• Utilize technology. If you have a hearing aid, wear it as much as possible. You can also consider other hearing interventions including cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, amplified telephones, or captioning.
ACCESS TO RESOURCES
As you begin to age, access to valuable resources is critically important. However,
Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain?
an Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) survey found that older adults report that they are concerned with where to find these resources. Survey respondents indicated that they need information on general health and wellness as well as information on memory loss and dementia, pharmacy benefits, and access to mental health services. Other important resources mentioned included assistance with maintaining their independence, access to caregivers fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and access to attorneys and estate planners.
As such, ACDHH is launching its Age of Access initiative designed to be a one-stop destination for resources, information, and programming for Arizona’s older adults who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss. An online survey is in the field right now to gain additional information regarding the needs of the community and how best to provide access to these resources. Take it here: https://bit.ly/acdhhsenior.
Respondents that participated in preliminary research conducted by Gallaudet University indicated that there is a lack of access to home health care aides (caregivers) that can sign or have awareness about deaf people’s needs. Therefore, in the fall of 2023, ACDHH, in partnership with the university, will conduct focus groups on this as well.
Sherri Collins is the executive director for the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing. For more information, visit acdhh.org.
You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.
Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love.
Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration.
e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself.
ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What To Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

The Life Estate in Estate Planning
By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
O
A life estate is what it says: ownership of a property for the entire life of the beneficiary, even if they no longer can or want to live in the home. The life estate may not be what the client really wants. An alternative we offer is the right to occupy the home while the home is held in an Occupancy Trust.
The Occupancy Trust allows the client to tailor the terms according to their wishes. The Trust contains the terms that govern the loved one’s right to occupy the house. It might provide that the occupant must pay for all maintenance, utilities, taxes, insurance, and other expenses of the home while the occupant lives there, or the trust may include money for payment of all those expenses.
The Occupancy Trust can provide for how long the occupant may stay in the home. It can include a fixed length of time or allow the occupant to stay until they pass or can no longer live in the home. A right of occupancy is similar to a life estate, but the occupant cannot sell or transfer their interest in the property
like a life estate beneficiary can, and the rights of the beneficiary can before their death.
ften, a client asks me if we can give a life estate in a home to a beneficiary. The client wants to allow a loved one to occupy the home they are living in, even after the client passes away. The intent is to provide a home for their loved one without giving them complete ownership of the home.HERE ARE TWO EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS USING THE OCCUPANCY TRUST FOR PLANNING:
John has a home in Phoenix, where his special needs brother Andy lives with him. John wants to provide a place for Andy for as long as Andy is able to live independently. John’s revocable trust states that on his passing, the house and a certain sum of money will be held in an Occupancy Trust for Andy. Upon Andy’s passing, or when he is no longer able to live there, the home is to be sold and the proceeds distributed to John’s two children.
Joan owns a home where she lives with her second husband. Joan wants her husband to have time to decide his next steps if she passes first. Her trust provides for an occupancy trust for her current husband, allowing him two years to live there. Upon her husband vacating the property it will be sold, and the proceeds distributed to named beneficiaries.
The Occupancy Trust can provide great flexibility for you if you are concerned about providing for a spouse or other loved one who is living with you. If you have a situation that might merit this planning, we can work through the terms of a plan that will fit you and your loved one perfectly. Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“Evil Dead Rise”
A small family is trapped in their apartment building when a demonic force is unleashed with the ability to possess.
While the “Evil Dead” series may not be a regular topic of conversation among the general public, its deep roots in the horror genre and accessibility for newcomers make it truly special. “Rise” continues this legacy, embracing the more serious tone of the original film and the 2013 iteration, while maintaining the distinctive excess of content and action that sets the series apart. This is a hard-hitting piece that conveys the pain and terror of its characters in a way that will make you cringe. Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan deliver stunning performances as sisters, with Sutherland’s compelling portrayal of a possessed character and Sullivan’s heroic essence reminiscent of Ash and Mia, while also bringing motherhood themes into focus. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat, holding nothing back, which is a major plus. It stands as a worthy addition to one of the greatest horror series of all time.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
The Guardians must face their greatest enemy yet to save one of their own.
James Gunn is a constant reminder of the creative possibilities inherent in the comic book film genre. Despite certain shortcomings, the third installment of his Guardians saga is among his most compelling work to date. Gunn escalates the level of intense action and mature content in a way that complements the overall narrative and tone, while still harmonizing with the previous films. It’s the empathetic core of the story that keeps us invested, as the cast subtly conveys their characters’ growth through nuanced changes in their movements and vocal inflections. Importantly, the film remains clear about its identity and effectively concludes the overarching themes of the trilogy. It’s a truly remarkable piece.
“Hypnotic”
A detective uncovers a supernatural element in the search for his daughter.
“Hypnotic” is a film that, despite having ample talent both on-screen and behind the scenes, struggles to achieve its ultimate, yet confused, objective. Director Robert Rodriguez, known for infusing style and charisma into his low-budget projects, seems to fall short here, with the film’s low-cost aesthetic lacking the charm of his previous works. The cast, including
usually impressive actors like Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, appear disengaged or unenthusiastic about the story, though William Fitchner gives a notably overthe-top performance. The film aims for complexity in its structure but ends up being more incoherent and confusing, and its attempts to draw parallels with filmmaking feel underdeveloped. There’s a glimmer of an intriguing concept in the third act, but it’s undermined by a hurried conclusion. Overall, it’s an unfortunate squandering of potential and talent.
satisfy both hardcore fans and casual viewers, even though the ending may leave some yearning for more.

Dom and his family’s past actions come back to haunt them, with a new foe hellbent on revenge.
By now, fans know what to expect from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and “Fast X” delivers the anticipated thrills, albeit in a somewhat overstuffed package. The consistently strong performers (Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang) maintain their high standards, while others (Ludacris, Gibson) have yet to master their craft, even after two decades. The film’s abrupt shifts between narratives, some of which appear only briefly before a lengthy absence, may disrupt its flow. Nevertheless, the film’s charisma and action sequences help propel it forward. In terms of the latter, Louis Leterrier masterfully orchestrates some of the series’ most audacious stunts, managing to balance fight scenes, varied vehicle chases, and shootouts to prevent repetition during the film’s extensive run time of nearly two and a half hours. The editing truly shines in these moments, producing a solid action film that should
