Beginning with this issue, North 32nd News—which started in 2018—is transitioning to Paradise Valley View. This change is an addition, not a subtraction. With it, we will now not only be covering hyperlocal news from the North 32nd area but also Paradise Valley. One of the most common things we’ve heard from readers and advertisers is, “I wish you delivered to Paradise Valley.” Well, now we do. After much thought and consideration, we have decided to change the North 32nd News’ delivery area. Moving forward, we will now deliver to 20,000 homes and businesses in the 85028 and 85253 (Paradise Valley) zip codes. We are making this move because, as the area grows, we are growing with it. We want to make sure to cover the news that matters to North 32nd and Paradise Valley residents and reach as many readers in the area as we can.

Multiple Arizona House of Representatives Candidates Up for Election at August 2 Primary ON AUGUST 2, MULTIPLE CANDIDATES FROM SCOTTSDALE AND PARADISE VALLEY WILL BE UP FOR ELECTION TO THE ARIZONA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. This primary election is the first since legislative district boundaries statewide changed. In addition to the changed district boundaries, names also changed. Legislative District (LD) 23 is now LD 3 and LD 24 is now LD 4. Each district will vote for two representatives. LD 3 covers North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Fountain Hills, and parts of Phoenix. The candidates for LD 3 include: • Joseph Chaplik, R-Scottsdale, an incumbent • Ernest Anderson, R-Scottsdale • Alexander Kolodin, R-Scottsdale • Nicole Cantelme, R-Cave Creek • Darin Mitchell, R-Fountain Hills

Colorado River Water Shortage Caused by Climate Change Requires Phoenicians To Adapt Information and Photo Courtesy of Phoenix Water Services AT A RECENT BRIEFING, OFFICIALS WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES, AND CENTRAL ARIZONA PROJECT DELIVERED A STARK ASSESSMENT OF THE COLORADO RIVER. As impacts of climate change persist, more significant Colorado River cuts are likely to occur. Those reductions will impact the amount of Colorado River water available to Phoenix and other central Arizona municipalities, farmers, and tribes. Central Arizona is currently experiencing the first-ever declared shortage on the Colorado River. “Three things are true about this situation: first, it is serious. Second, it will require the city to think differently, and plan differently, for how we use water. Third, we need to enlist the people of Phoenix as our partners in the hard work ahead,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Researchers are serious when they tell us this megadrought is the worst in at least 1,200 years. The more we can encourage people and businesses to think creatively about how to reduce water consumption now, the better off we will be.”

With just a little effort, every Phoenix Water customer can easily reduce their water use by 1% to 5%, saving millions of gallons of water every year. HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOMES AND BUSINESSES: • Do not overwater landscaping and use a smart irrigation controller to reduce outdoor water use. Text WHENTOWATER to 33222 for simple monthly reminders to keep your watering on track. • Find and fix leaks inside and outside. • Know the optimal amount of water to use in your home with the Water Usage Calculator. • Choose xeriscape by removing or reducing grass lawns and planting native or desert adapted trees, shrubs, and groundcover that require little water once established. • Upgrade to water-saving toilets and a low water use dishwasher and washing machine. • Cover swimming pools to reduce evaporation.
While asking residents and businesses to do their part, the city is increasing its conservation outreach effort. For example, the Phoenix Water Conservation team expanded its homeowner’s associations outdoor water efficiency program to reach more neighborhoods. After meeting with just six associations, the Water Conservation team identified a potential for more than 20 million gallons per year of savings – enough water to supply 184 families for a year. As more HOAs participate, Phoenix expects even more water savings. The city has worked hard to develop a sustainable water supply and has been designated by the state as having a 100-year assured water supply. In addition, Phoenix recycles nearly all its wastewater, delivering it for use in agriculture, energy production, urban irrigation, aquifer recharge, and riparian wetland maintenance. Phoenix will continue to plan, invest and conserve to ensure a sustainable future while providing safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers without interruption. Additionally, the city will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River as we strive to become the most sustainable desert city in the world. Over the course of decades, Phoenix developed a robust and diverse water resource portfolio with multiple sources and contingency supplies to provide safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers. The Colorado River currently supplies 40% of the water Phoenix uses. “The Colorado River shortage is coming sooner than anticipated,” says Phoenix Water Services Director Troy Hayes. “But all the planning and investment in infrastructure that we have done has put the city in a good place to manage the challenging conditions.” The city has invested in infrastructure and underground water storage, and has been a strong pioneer in water conservation in anticipation of a Colorado River shortage. Yet, as the drought intensifies, the city must continue to innovate new, proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River, which is over-allocated and in decline due to climate change. The city is prepared to implement additional actions, including those described in its Drought Management Plan. “Our customers have always been our partners in conservation, and we need that more than ever now,” says City of Phoenix Water Resources Management Advisor Cynthia Campbell. “It is imperative that 6 • June/July 2022 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW

Antique Gatherings Moves Into The Neighborhood This Summer By Gretchen Pahia ANTIQUE LOVERS UNITE! ANTIQUE GATHERINGS, ORIGINALLY LOCATED AT THE GASLIGHT SQUARE SHOPPING CENTER IN PHOENIX, IS MOVING INTO THE NORTH 32ND NEIGHBORHOOD. The shop is taking over the old Walgreens location on the northeast corner of 32nd Street and Shea, next to Bashas’, which has been vacant for several years. Their last day at the Gaslight Square location will be June 15. This places an opening date for their new location (10629 N. 32nd Street) in mid-June. Antique Gatherings isn’t new to the Valley, having spent several years near 36th Street and Indian School. However, the owners are moving their showroom several miles north, bringing several unique and timeless antique deals to residents in the North 32nd area and Paradise Valley.
“We were in our old location for almost 30 years and some of the dealers coming with us to the new location have been there just as long,” says owner Amanda Wilson. “I have owned Antique Gatherings for 10 years. We have a very loyal following but are very excited to meet and make new customers as well. I’ve been told that we are one of the few true antique shops in the Valley; we do carry wonderful and unique treasures.”

City News Valley Residents Team Up to Encourage The State to Ban Declawing Cats WHILE IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, THERE ARE CAT OWNERS WHO STILL ASK VETS TO DECLAW THEIR CATS, WHICH IS AN AMPUTATION OF THE CAT’S “FINGERS AND TOES.” It is illegal in the state of New York and banned in 40 countries worldwide. According to many experts, it’s extremely painful to cats and they never fully recover. Several Valley residents are spearheading an effort to ban the practice in the state of Arizona so that no additional cats suffer from this surgical procedure. One such person is Kallie Rose. “When I found out that declawing cats was still legal in Arizona, I knew I had to step up and take a stand. All our pets are precious, but no other species are subjected to the amputation that cats still endure. While many vets refuse to perform this barbaric surgery, it is still possible to get it done,” Rose says. “It’s imperative that we prevent additional suffering.” Nonprofit organization The Paw Project is heading up a nationwide effort, state by state, to make declawing cats illegal. For more than two decades, they have been committed to educating the public, legislators
and veterinarians about how this potentially crippling surgical procedure can harm a cat’s physical health and result in disturbing behavioral changes. Unsuspecting cat guardians are often unaware that declawing is an amputation of a cat’s toes at the last joint. They do not realize that negative behavioral and health changes caused by declawing can be irreversible and permanent; in effect, trading one set of problems for another. Arizona legislators are reaching across the aisles to move AZ Anti-Declaw Bill, HB2014 (formerly HB2224), all the way to Governor Ducey for signature before year end. It has already unanimously passed the Arizona Senate Commerce Committee. The bill, which would prohibit non-therapeutic declawing, was authored by State Representative Amish Shah, MD (D - Phoenix) and State Representative John Kavanagh (R - Fountain Hills). Paw Project Director and Founder Dr. Jennifer Conrad, DVM and Arizona Humane Society CEO Dr. Steven Hansen, DVM provided testimony at the Committee hearing. The bill must pass both houses of the legislature and be signed by the governor before becoming law. Unfortunately, there is opposition to the bill. “It’s hard to believe that anyone would oppose this bill,” said Shah, who is also an ER doctor and familiar with the painful procedure. “In my mind, there’s no way to rationalize allowing an animal to suffer in this way.” “It’s time we get this anti-declaw bill passed. We have the support of veterinarians such as VCA Animal Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital who have already banned the practice and our local animal rescue organizations like the Arizona Humane Society,” Rose adds. “More than 70% of people polled are in favor of making declawing illegal; the additional 30% probably just need to be educated, which is what we are trying to do.” To learn more, visit pawproject. org.

“In Los Angeles, I kept meeting all these really talented kids from Phoenix in showcases and auditions,” says Rossi. “I took it kind of as a sign. Now that I’m back in the Valley, I feel like these kids won’t miss out on an opportunity because I’m a local resource that they can reach out to.” Rossi is currently working with an amazing assortment of young local actors and is always on the lookout for more show-stopping natural talent. Arizona natives unsure of where to start in show business can dive right in simply by sending in a resume and a headshot. Greater Phoenix Unemployment Rate Falls Below 3%

THE UNADJUSTED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN GREATER PHOENIX RECENTLY DROPPED TO 2.4 PERCENT, DOWN NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF A POINT FROM FEBRUARY’S 3.1 PERCENT AND HALF OF LAST YEAR’S 5.4 PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN MARCH. Robust hiring brought the Phoenix metro workforce to nearly 2.5 million people in March, up 110,800 from March last year. Hospitality (up 17,600 jobs in yearover-year comparisons) and retail (up 14,400 jobs in March 2022 over March 2021) showed strong gains recovering to nearly pre-pandemic levels. Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS. According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water.
Several municipalities have created partnerships with the Mission, bringing relief to the streets in the Mission’s Hope Coach vehicles to distribute water, toiletries, and case management services. “Anything helps in this undertaking to save and change lives, whether it’s through a monetary donation, dropping off a case of water or starting a water drive,” says Brissa. “This is so much more than a handout of water. This is arming people with the tools to change their lives and move out of harm’s way.”
Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies. PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission.

“During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa. “While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.”
The Mission is also in need of volunteers to help distribute vital, nutritious food to families in need at its Hope for Hunger Food Bank.
Food, water, and all other heat-relief donations can be dropped off at the Mission’s Donation Warehouse, located at 2515 N. 34th Drive in Phoenix.

Ron Safcik, former athletic director at Shadow Mountain High School, has been named the Arizona Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (AIAAA) 4A Conference Athletic Director of the Year. The AIAAA gives this award to only one athletic director in each conference. “Being an athletic director has given me the opportunity to develop relationships with the Shadow Mountain community and other athletic administrators around the state,” says Safcik. The award came at a perfect time as Safcik just retired at the end of the school year after 25 years of service at PVSchools, 13 of which were as an athletic director. SUNRISE MIDDLE DLC STUDENTS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL HISTORY DAY COMPETITION Sunrise Middle School’s Digital Learning Center (DLC) students have done it again. Three students (Ira Parsons, Audrey
Horizon High School is adding another state championship to the list of accomplishments for the 2021-22 school year! At the Winter Guard Arizona State Championships, Horizon High School had two separate groups win their state championships. The Horizon Indoor Percussion Ensemble (HIPE) and Winter Guard teams both took home the prestigious state championship titles. “Both of our groups worked extremely hard over the season, and you can see that with their performances. Their determination to grow at every rehearsal was evident every day, and their passion for music is inspiring. I also cannot thank our assistant directors enough for helping create a great environment for all of our students,” says Kyle Hollerbach, band teacher.

Craft Nights Hosts Summer Camp for Young Artists
July 18-21 Camp Now Enrolling Kids Ages 7-11 Interested In Arts and Crafts
I
f you’re the parent or caregiver of a mini artist and still need something fun to keep them entertained this summer, consider the new “Under The Sea” themed Kids Summer Camp at Craft Nights. The camp takes place July 18-21 from 9 a.m.-noon at Craft Nights, located at 3241 E. Shea Boulevard, Ste. 9A. Craft Nights is a woman-owned, DIY arts and crafts studio that hosts regular events for crafters of all experience levels. In this four-day camp, budding artist ages 7-11 (or going into the first through fourth grades) will paint with acrylics, draw, and create mixed media projects. “Guided by our own educator artists, each camper creates a portfolio worthy of display in your own living room art show,” according to Craft Nights. “Parents and campers alike agree that this unique program is an ideal blend of art, crafts, education, and creative fun.” “Students develop many benefits through arts and crafts,” explains Heidi Koffman, Craft Nights’ owner. “Arts and crafts help to develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and concentration.
Our favorite part though is helping to build each student’s self-confidence.” Students who participate will need to bring their own lunch, water bottle and snacks. Before care is available for an extra fee. For student and staff safety, no food products with nuts are allowed at camp. In addition to camps, Craft Nights offers a variety of classes from canvas painting and string art to acrylic pouring, painting, and planting. All sessions are instructor led with step-by-step directions for each crafting project, making it perfect for crafters of all skill levels. “We believe our classes remove the intimidation factor from crafting,” Koffman says. “Oftentimes people want to try a new skill but just don’t know where to start. Coming to a class takes away the pressure of figuring out which supplies to buy and how to begin. We also provide the experts in case crafters need any advice or help along the way.” Not only does Craft Nights offer a variety of classes, but they also host private parties. This is a great option for bridal showers, birthdays, and more. If
there are a minimum of 12 guests, you can choose your favorite crafts and host a private event. “We love seeing people learn and express themselves creatively,” says Koffman. “Whether you come on your own, or bring a friend, or sign your child up for summer camp, people have a great time here. Oceans of Possibilities: Maricopa County Reads’ 2022 Summer Reading Program Begins

ixty-five libraries across the county are gearing up for Summer Reading as Maricopa County Reads opens June 1 with a community goal of 50 million minutes read. Maricopa County Reads is one of the county’s largest literacy efforts and plays a vital role in
reducing learning loss while transitioning between school years. “Building a community of readers means we are building a community of problem solvers, collaborators, and lifelong learners,” says Bill Gates, Chairman of the

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 1. “The Summer Reading program is just one way to continue building an even brighter future for Maricopa County.” Participants earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks. Additional points are earned for attending in-person and virtual events hosted by librarians and local performers, completing summer reading challenges, and participating in community experiences to find secret codes while exploring Maricopa County. Prizes vary based on the number of points readers achieve. Readers who achieve 1,000 points can choose a free book for their home library or to donate to a local Head Start classroom. The theme of this year’s program is “Oceans of Possibilities,” encouraging readers of all ages to explore the many stories from under the sea.
The primary goal of the program is to interrupt the summer slide, the common term given to the learning loss experienced by children while transitioning between school years. The secondary aim of the program is to promote early literacy among prereaders and their families during the summer months. The Maricopa County Reads summer reading program began in the summer of 2013. It has continued to grow, and now hosts 65 public, tribal and military base libraries within Maricopa County. More than 80,000 children, teens, and adults participate in the program annually. The program runs through August 1 and all Phoenix Public Library locations are participating. The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer By Donna Throckmorton
T
he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics. One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library. Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general. In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.
Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day. It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency. Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.
A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier. Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today! t’s summertime! We are all ready to get back to traveling and enjoying our summer. Of course, it is important to remain healthy while traveling. Here are some helpful tips to keep you and your family healthy while you enjoy those welldeserved vacations.
HYDRATION: When we travel, our water intake typically decreases. We do not want the burden of having to stop so frequently to use the bathroom. When we get dehydrated, we can have more inflammation in the body. It is important to drink at least half your weight in ounces each day. I will often suggest adding electrolytes while traveling too. Make a conscious effort to stay hydrated while traveling.

NUTRITION: Food is one of the most exciting parts of a vacation and I love exploring new places to eat and trying new foods. Often, we go off our regular eating habits while on vacation. It can be helpful to find a place to stay that has a kitchen so you can plan to make a few meals. I always recommend healthy road trip snacks for those long trips. Trail mix, fruit, and healthy snack bars are always a great idea. If you have snacks packed, you are less likely to stop at a convenience store and grab those less healthy snacks. STAY ACTIVE: If you have a long flight, make sure to get up at least once per hour and walk a bit for better circulation. Find fun family activities that include hiking and exploring. Take a nice long walk after a big meal. If on a long road trip, take

How A Revocable Trust Benefits You and Your Family By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
T
he Revocable Living Trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. The assets you worked and saved to accumulate go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee, and you are the only beneficiary of the assets. If you can’t take care of your treasures (manage your finances), either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign, and record a deed to the house. In the deed John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. The same thing happens with your financial accounts.
Once your Trust is in place, you continue as always to be the manager of your financial affairs. You manage your assets, receive the income, write checks, make deposits, pay bills, and buy and sell property. You have full control. But if you can no longer manage your financial affairs, either because of death or incapacity, your Trust contains the instructions for who is in charge – the designation of your successor trustee. The Trust tells the successor trustee how they are to manage the trust assets and distribute money for your benefit if you are incapacitated. The Trust also contains your instructions for administering your assets and distributing them to your beneficiaries at death. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, when a client has become incapacitated or passed away, their designated successor trustee certainly notices the difference. The trust results in a much easier transition for them to take care of financial affairs for the incapacitated person, and to manage and distribute the assets after death.

Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke.
“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-

breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace. “Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.
