City News Fire Ban in Desert Parks and Preserves Starts May 1
THE PHOENIX PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT WILL PUT INTO EFFECT ITS ANNUAL BAN OF OPEN FIRES IN THE CITY’S DESERT PARKS AND MOUNTAIN PRESERVES STARTING MONDAY, MAY 1. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department’s annual fire ban goes into effect the same day.
In consultation with the Phoenix Fire Department, smoking and charcoal fires are included in the ban due to the extreme fire danger that the combination of low humidity, increased temperatures, excessive dry vegetation, and frequent high winds create each spring.
The ban applies to Camelback Mountain, Deem Hills Recreation Area, Lookout Mountain, Papago Park, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, North Mountain Park, Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, and South Mountain Park/Preserve.
The ban does not apply to the city’s flatland parks.
For those using the city’s desert parks and preserve land, the fire ban stipulates the following:
• Open wood and charcoal fires are prohibited
• Propane or gas grills may be used, but only in established picnic areas
• Smoking outside enclosed vehicles is prohibited year-round
• Fireworks are prohibited year-round
Motorists traveling through or near Phoenix’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extreme care with smoking materials and dispose of those only in their vehicle’s ash tray.
To protect their homes, residents whose property borders the city’s preserve land may remove dry shrubs, brush and grasses, and trim dead branches from trees within the 10-foot strip of land that borders their property. By creating this 10-foot “buffer zone” residents can help to protect their homes from potential brush fires in the adjacent preserve land.
Preserve neighbors also should check irrigation lines and pool back-flush hoses to ensure that water is not seeping into the preserve. Outside water sources encourage unnaturally dense vegetation growth, which increases fire risk.
For general information regarding removing vegetation, residents can contact a Phoenix Park Ranger at 602495-5458 or natural.resources.pks@ phoenix.gov .
As the temperature increases and humidity drops this time of year, those utilizing the city’s desert parks and mountain preserves should use extra caution. Heat-related illness is common from May to October, and generally occur because the victim has been overexposed to heat or overexerted their body based on physical condition or age.
For the safety of pets, dogs are prohibited on any city of Phoenix trail when the temperature is 100 degrees or warmer. The Arizona Humane Society advises that temperatures in the 90s are also unsafe for pets to be outdoors.
Detailed information about Phoenix’s 41,000-plus acres of desert parks and mountain preserves, and 200-plus miles of trails, is available at phoenix.gov/ parks.
Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain? You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.
Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What To Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Education Musical Prodigy Benny Taylor Shines at North Ranch Elementary School, Inspires Community with Unwavering Passion for Violin
Paradise Valley Unified School District’s North Ranch Elementary School is beaming with pride as young violin virtuoso, Benny Taylor, takes center stage in the local classical music scene. Recently featured on the renowned KBACH radio station, Benny’s exceptional talent has been captivating audiences and inspiring fellow students.
Having played the violin for eight years, Taylor’s dedication to his craft is evident in his impressive accomplishments. For half a decade, he has been a key member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, even serving as concertmaster, which he cites as one of his fondest musical memories.
Taylor’s prodigious abilities are rooted in a rich family history of professional musicians who have devoted their lives to classical music. His mother, in particular, has been his greatest musical inspiration. With a deep affinity for the classical genre, Taylor’s favorite piece is “Millionaires Hoedown” by Herman Clebanoff, and he holds Friedrich Seitz in high regard as his top composer.
Despite his extraordinary musical achievements, Benny remains grounded and maintains a variety of interests outside the realm of music. North Ranch Elementary School and PVSchools couldn’t be prouder of their multitalented student, whose passion and humility serve as an inspiration to all.

SOUND OFF WITH THE LYRICAL TUNE OF VIBRATIONS.
What’s that sound? Sound waves are vibrations and while music may be invisible, it doesn’t take much to know it’s there. And you don’t need a fancy guitar or a grand piano to play a song - you can create a musical instrument at home and play it with air from your very own lungs. In this activity, explore the sounds you make with a whistle crafted from a piece of paper.
YOU WILL NEED:
• 1 paper whistle (instructions below)
• 1 pair of scissors
MAKE A PAPER WHISTLE:
1. With adult supervision, draw and cut out a whistle blueprint that looks like the diagram on this page.
2. Fold along dotted lines
3. Once folded, cut the small triangle from the larger bottom fold
4. Open smaller folds like a book, and gently hold against lips with a finger on each side. Don’t press too hard or air can’t flow through easily. Purse lips and blow air into the whistle.
whistle? What did you do to make the sound? Why do you think it happened? Were you able to do anything that changed the sound? What happens when you blow harder or softer? Does the sound change?
If you’d like to experience more related to the science of music, get your groove on and head over to Arizona Science Center. Discover the science of soundwaves, music, and vibration! Our exhibition, “Good Vibrations: Where Science Gets Loud,” is sure to hit all the right notes. Visit azscience.org to learn more.
TRY THIS AT HOME!
Before you use the whistle, hypothesize! What do you think will happen when you blow into the whistle? What sounds do you think you’ll make?
When you do use it, be sure to observe what happens! What happened when you blew into the

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… my childhood passion was performing as a singer/dancer/ actor in professional musical theater, which I did through medical school. I also wanted to be involved in the education and medical fields, so after medical school I had the good fortune of combining my varied expertise to become the woman pioneer of medical communications (according to “TV Guide” in 1976) as the resident health reporter for NBC in Philadelphia, creating a health tips syndication that was airing on CBS in Phoenix when we moved here in 1980, started Health Team 12 at our own Phoenix NBC affiliate, and was the medical consultant at USA Cable in the 80s. I started my own company, Health Education Learning Programs, in 1985 to produce award winning, impactful classroom prevention/education videos and curricula concerning vital health issues such as substance abuse prevention, AIDS, and teen pregnancy, that were distributed by Discovery Education for many years. When the Phoenix Lights came into my life in 1995 and then thousands reported during the March 13, 1997, mass AZ UFO sighting what I had been witnessing and photographing on video and 35-mm prior to, during, and after the historic event, I felt obliged as both an experiencer, scientist, physician, and educator to share that vital issue. SHADOW MOUNTAIN AUTO SERVICE: The relationship you and your car need
By Shay Moser
Curt Morgan is not your average auto repair shop owner, nor are the people who work for him.
“We’re not only fixing cars,” Morgan says, “we’re building relationships.”
Shadow Mountain Auto Service, south of Shea Boulevard on 32nd Street in Phoenix, is the sort of place where the staff gets to know their customers along with their cars. It’s also where a minor repair might be performed for free, and more complex issues will be patiently, even exhaustively, investigated. Car owners tend to linger inside the lobby catching up about life with the shop manager/service writers who make customers’ experience the best possible.
Morgan and the advisors employ a kind of relationship therapy, learning about their customers to help them plan and budget in a way that will save them money. They explain the problem in plain terms and point out the affected parts. They look at customers’ cars’ long-term health, document the good and bad conditions in photos, and provide options for their needs and budgets.
20 • May 2023 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW myhyperlocalnews.com Cover Story
“We never talk down to our customers,” says Morgan. “We avoid overly technical language, and most importantly, we actively listen to the questions and concerns of our customers. We understand that every situation is different and take steps to ensure the solution is tailor-made for each customer and their vehicle. This approach has always been at the core of our business practice, and it always will be.
The same approach is taken with Morgan’s team.
“Our company is all about people, inside and out,” continues Morgan, who knows not only his team’s auto experience but also their families and hobbies. “As technically challenging as the automotive repair business is and what we do, it’s not always brain surgery. I don’t hire a skillset; I hire people.”
PASSION FUELS AUTO REPAIR PROFESSION
Morgan fueled his passion for repairing cars and the people behind the wheel as a mechanic at national chains in the Valley for 30 years before opening Shadow Mountain Auto Service with his wife and co-owner, Cindy. That passion led him to become a double master ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) certified mechanic with advanced-level certifications in automotive and diesel applications.
“I was passionate about it, even working for others,” says Morgan. “There were so many people in the business that I looked up to and admired and thought the world of because of their honesty and character.”
Morgan brought his passion for car repair to teaching classes in Glendale Community College’s Auto Technology Department for 15 years. He’s currently chairman of GCC’s National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation advisory committee.
As a member of the Better Business Bureau since 2008, he was invited to join its Automotive Repair Advisory Council in 2012. He was elected as chairman of BBB’s council from 2015 to 2017.
Morgan also shares his auto expertise during the Bumper to Bumper Radio show on KTAR, 92.3 FM in Phoenix, every Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon.
“What do you want to do when you’re passionate about work? Morgan asks. “You
want control over how you do it and the final product.”
OPENING DOORS TO FULL-SERVICE FACILITY
That passion prompted Morgan to open Shadow Mountain Auto Service in 2008 with the motto, “Where character counts.”
As a full-service, preventive maintenance and auto repair facility, it services and repairs all imported and domestic cars, trucks, and SUVs. It has the staff, skills, training, and equipment necessary to perform most required maintenance on cars and trucks, whether new and still under warranty or older vehicles.
Customers can bring their vehicles in for heavy-duty services, including engine and transmission replacement, to heating and cooling, electronic, electrical, minor engine, and fuel-economy services. Miscellaneous services are also offered, such as afterhours drop-off, emission repairs, and prepurchase and pre-trip inspections.
The shop gives customers a five-year, or 50,000-mile, warranty on almost every service, which is way above the industry norm.
“While we are not the cheapest place in town, we are far from the most expensive,” says Morgan. “We strongly believe that saving money on auto repair is more about the honesty of the institution working for you than using cheap parts or the lowest paid people doing the work.”
Case in point: A customer left an online review about how they needed the plastic piece in the undercarriage of their car replaced. The part was mainly unnecessary in Arizona’s dry climate, per Shadow Mountain Auto Service. So, the customer told them to cut it out, and the shop did free of charge. That customer ended their review with, “Appreciated the honesty. Trusting them for any car repairs I need in the future.”
Genuine, professional, knowledgeable, trustworthy, timely, great service, and fair prices are other words used in online reviews for Shadow Mountain Auto Service. It’s also the sort of place where most of its business comes from referrals.

Organizations Unite to Prevent Childhood Drownings through Pool Fence Safety Program
As the weather warms up, swimming is top of mind for children and families looking for a fun way to escape the heat. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 4 in Arizona. Child Crisis Arizona, Salt River Project (SRP), and the United Phoenix Firefighter Charities (UPFC) are working together to prevent childhood drownings through the 2023 Pool Fence Safety Program.
“The Pool Fence Safety Program is
a wonderful opportunity to create awareness and keep children safe around water,” says Caitlin Sageng, director of Special Projects & Family Resources at Child Crisis Arizona. “The program provides funding for families that are financially unable to afford pool barriers and have young children.”
Families living in Maricopa County can apply to be awarded a new pool fence at no cost if they meet certain eligibility criteria. The application process
officially opened last month and closes on May 26.
“As the largest provider of water in the Valley for the past century, water safety is paramount at SRP. Research shows that secure pool fencing can prevent about 75% of water-related drownings of unsupervised children,” says SRP Community Engagement Strategist Rori Minor. “SRP is committed to improving the quality of life for the people we serve. Through our various drowning-prevention outreach programs and contributions, we hope to help provide parents with the education and resources they need to keep their children safe around water.”
The total sponsorship is $35,000. Twenty-five thousand is funded by SRP and the UPFC pledges to raise $10,000 to support the program.
“The installation of pool barriers continues to be a key factor in the prevention of child drownings,” says David Ramirez with United Phoenix Firefighters Charities. “There is nothing more aggressive in preventing tragedies
than putting in a pool fence. Child drownings are truly a community problem. We are encouraged to have organizations like SRP and Child Crisis Arizona step up and lead this effort.”
Applications are available in both English and Spanish. Families may apply on the Child Crisis Arizona website, childcrisisaz. org/pool-fence-safety-program.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Must have a child 6 years old or younger living in the home
• Home must be owner-occupied, no renters
• Family must reside within Maricopa County
• Family must be income qualified. Participation in one of the following assistance programs will be used to verify income eligibility: food stamps, Medicaid, WIC, energy assistance, or unemployment.
• If the family is not enrolled in one of the assistance programs, household income will be considered, and your 2022 tax return will be used to verify income eligibility.

Community Hospice Team Helps 101-Year-Old Math Whiz Share Secret to Solving Rubik’s Cube
By Lin Sue Flood
Photos courtesy of Hospice of the Valley
Dr. Evar Nering’s passion for numbers has only grown stronger over a century of living.
The 101-year-old began his career as a young man at Princeton, earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics. He later helped create an algorithm for linear programming that garnered five patents. He spent three decades teaching at Arizona State University, building its math program and chairing the department for eight years.
Obviously, Nering has a lot of experience with equations, theorems, and statistics. But his most pressing challenge is the one he is facing now: How to share his algorithm for solving the Rubik’s Cube.
Most people abandon the frustrating 3D puzzle within a few minutes. But not Nering. He was so intrigued that he set out to create a mathematical formula that anyone could use.
“I’ve seen videos of people working the Rubik’s Cube super-fast, but I can’t tell what’s happening,” the Scottsdale resident chuckles. “I’m not about speed or competing. At my age, I just want to give my algorithm to the world — as my legacy.”
As soon as Nering’s Hospice of the Valley care team heard about his dream, they wanted to help. “Even at 101, he is very mentally alert and loves to talk about math,” says social worker Alanna Ambos. “We decided to connect him with someone who shares that same joy.”
So, Ambos and nurse Bonnie Lazzeri teamed with Nering’s daughter and caregiver to reach out to a math professor at Gateway Community College. JW Gaberdiel agreed to visit Nering to learn about his formula.
“Evar’s algorithm is for any cube size and that’s part of its power,” Gaberdiel says. “His approach is symmetric and beautiful, but not necessarily fast. That is also its charm. There’s something elegant about it.”
The men spent two hours together, chatting about Nering’s life, career, and dream to help all of us conquer the Rubik’s Cube.
“I like the challenge of solving problems,” Nering admits. “And getting my algorithm out there in the public domain is just one more thing to figure out.”
In the meantime, he’s sharing it with us. For Nering’s solution, visit hov. org/media/3016/evar-paper.pdf.

Digestive Health and Naturopathic Medicine
By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
In naturopathic medicine, gut health is a primary focus. Bowel movements are discussed at every visit. Are they daily and well-formed? Is there constipation or diarrhea? Is there cramping, bloating or gas? These are all common symptoms that patients experience with a digestive disruption. It is healthy to have at least one well-formed bowel movement each day and it is not normal to experience discomfort.
Many patients have some sort of digestive symptom, and the goal is to identify the root cause, regulate bowel movements, eliminate discomfort, and support healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients. This is how we start.
FOOD
Food is one of the most common causes of inflammation in the digestive system. We focus on the diet in detail to find any foods that could be aggravating the system. Common foods that upset the digestion are wheat, diary, and eggs as well as artificial sweeteners and other food additives. We can further investigate specific foods with a food sensitivity test, specifically IgG sensitivity testing. When we identify the foods that could be causing some upset, we can eliminate them for a certain period of time, heal the gut, and then try the foods again. Sometimes it just takes a little break from those aggravating foods to heal the gut. It is like wearing a shoe that causes a blister, you have to stop wearing the shoe for a little while, let it heal and then try the shoe on again.
IMBALANCED GUT FLORA
This can be a major cause of digestive symptoms. Our gut requires a harmonious balance of bacteria. Stress, food sensitivities, and other health conditions can all disrupt the flora and lead to a change in digestion. Prolonged or frequent use of antibiotics can also affect gut health and lead to yeast and/ or bacterial overgrowth. It is important to support the gut during and after any antibiotic use to ensure that the
good bacteria are replenished. We are able to identify any bacterial or yeast overgrowth with specific testing and then treat with proper probiotics and additional support that are tailored towards each patient.
OTHER UNDERLYING CAUSES
Underlying illnesses and other conditions can also affect the digestive system. Thyroid disease can have a direct effect on the digestive system causing constipation or loose/frequent stools. Autoimmune disease such as inflammatory bowel disease can also cause a disruption in the digestion and lead to symptoms of gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. Stress levels play a huge role in the digestive system, so lifestyle changes are essential as well. Certain medications can also be a culprit and are investigated if symptoms arise. Those with skin conditions such as eczema typically improve with digestive support as well.
A complete history, physical, and appropriate testing will allow us to piece together all aspects that may be affecting your digestive health. Treatment is always individualized and tailored to your specific needs.
Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information visit drjennadye.com.

Your Revocable Trust May Increase Your FDIC Insurance Coverage Beyond $250,000

bank accounts. It makes managing your accounts during your lifetime easier, which in turn also makes it easier for your successor trustee when they step in.
But wait! Your revocable living trust might help by increasing your coverage. We generally recommend that our clients who have created a revocable trust change their bank accounts and other bank deposits and products over to the name of the trust. The FDIC recognizes these accounts as held in a trust relationship and calls these trusts formal revocable trusts. The trust, as owner of these accounts, is insured for up to $250,000 for each beneficiary of the trust, as long as the beneficiaries are individuals or qualified charitable or non-profit organizations. Beneficiaries are identified in the trust, and language such as “to my descendants” is sufficient – as long as the number and names of the beneficiaries can be determined.
The FDIC examples included in its brochure, includes a depositor with a trust account who has identified five unique beneficiaries. The FDIC coverage of $250,000 per account is increased to $1,250,000 for that depositor. Quite a difference! With increased FDIC coverage using the trust, you can consolidate your
he banking industry is under fire again, with many people worried about bank failures, wondering about their own bank’s health, and their own vulnerability to losses. The FDIC insures deposits – but only up to $250,000 per deposit at each bank. If your account at a bank is over $250,000, or if you have CDs and multiple accounts exceeding $250,000, you would only be covered up to that $250,000 amount. The revocable living trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. It’s also easy for you to use. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees.
For bank accounts, you still can deposit checks made to your name, withdraw money, and write checks. You won’t notice any difference from an account in your name, or a joint account with your spouse. With the additional FDIC insurance coverage, the revocable trust provides great peace of mind.
If you have questions about whether a trust is right for you, or if you have a trust you think might need updating, I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your specific situation and talk about the trust and how it might work for you. Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“Renfield”
Dracula’s longtime assistant, Renfield, attempts to find happiness and his own independence in modern day New Orleans.
The titular assassin finds himself at a turning point in his quest for freedom against the High Table.
It’s been impressive to see how far the John Wick series has come from its low budget origins, and the newest film is the culmination of that. We’ve gone from the excellent nightclub fights and shootouts of the first film to impressive large scale brawls involving cars, guns, and swords that increasingly escalate in scenes that can go up past 30 minutes. Despite that, there’s still the knowledge that the series never forgot what made it special in the first place, be it the small-scale final action sequence or Keanu Reeves’ performance of a man who is unsure of his place beyond killing. That’s before you get to a cast of unique and diverse characters who are just as tortured, veering down that path, or are just absolute fun. The film is a true accomplishment and career high from everyone involved, and possibly the best film of the series.
The plumber brothers are transported into an alternate world where they find themselves unlikely heroes.
I understand I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I expected more from a movie based on the “Mario Brothers” video games. It’s disheartening to see a lack of creativity in the storyline and entertainment, relying heavily on poor music choices and tiresome ironic humor. The film features a celebrity voice cast, most of whom seem to be playing themselves, with the exception of Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key, who genuinely immerse themselves in their roles. On a positive note, the animation is truly remarkable and expressive, making it one of the best I’ve seen from an Illumination film. Kudos to the animators for their incredible work! Despite the stunning visuals, the movie feels forgettable. However, it remains watchable and will undoubtedly appeal to younger audiences.
It’s unfortunate when a horror-comedy falls short because one aspect doesn’t quite measure up to the other, and “Renfield” seems to struggle with both. The sarcastic, self-aware humor prevalent in modern entertainment, such as “Rick and Morty” (which shares a writer with “Renfield”), comes off as particularly grating here, clashing with the intended horror atmosphere. Most characters in the film are unlikable and overly quippy, including the titular character and his boss (despite commendable efforts from Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage). The action sequences also disappoint, with choppy editing and minimal impact, even when blood splatters across the screen. This lackluster action does not blend well with the harsh, unappealing colors. While there are occasional successful gags or gore moments, they are rare and not enough to sustain the entire 99-minute runtime.
to genuinely capture the essence of an underground work, but “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” achieves just that. Much of this authenticity comes from its documentary-style approach, with visuals depicting a world bathed in perpetual twilight and actors who resemble real people plucked from the streets. The film’s intensity is palpable, not only during action sequences but also in quieter, small-scale moments where a single misstep could lead to catastrophe. In a time when highbudget action movies often feel uninspired and low-stakes, this film demonstrates the remarkable impact that can be achieved with limited resources. “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” is truly an exceptional cinematic experience.

CREEKSIDE CABINS, TAVERN AND TOURS:
Payson’s Hidden Gem for Family Getaways and Magical Weddings
By Sondra Barr
Photos courtesy of Creekside Cabins
Nestled beneath the mighty Mogollon Rim, just a stone’s throw from the banks of Christopher Creek, lies Payson’s best-kept secret: Creekside Cabins, Tavern and Tours. This hidden gem, a mere 90-minute drive from Phoenix, has recently undergone a fabulous renovation, and it’s now open for spring and summer reservations. It’s the perfect retreat for those looking to escape the Valley heat, with temperatures 20 degrees cooler than the desert metropolis.
But the fun doesn’t stop at the doorstep of your cabin. Creekside Tavern, an on-site restaurant and bar, serves up mouthwatering dishes and signature craft cocktails to tantalize your taste buds. With live entertainment every weekend, you can kick back and unwind to the sounds of local talent as you feast on slow-cooked baby back ribs, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, or seasoned grilled salmon. Sip on cocktails like the Duck & Cover or the Mogollon Margarita as you enjoy the aroma of BBQ meats wafting from the 2,500-square-foot patio in the pines.
If you’re itching to explore the great outdoors, Creekside now offers Jeep tours that whisk you away into the heart of Arizona rim country. Discover the Tonto and ApacheSitgreaves National Forests, marvel at the breathtaking views, and encounter local wildlife in their natural habitat. With elevations ranging from 5,800 to 7,500 feet, you’ll be able to truly appreciate the majestic beauty of the Mogollon Rim and its surroundings.
Creekside Co-Owner Jeremy Stensland proudly describes the property as “the best-kept secret in Payson” – and it’s easy to see why. The cabins, surrounded by breathtaking Ponderosa pines, offer rustic charm and cozy comfort that’s unparalleled in the area. With themes like the Bird’s Nest, Bear’s Den, Hunter’s Blind, and Enchanted Forest, each cabin has its own distinct personality. Sleeping six people comfortably, they’re equipped with all the modern amenities you could wish for – including a flat-screen TV, DirectTV, Keurig coffee maker, microwave, and a small refrigerator.
For larger family gatherings, Creekside offers more spacious units with full kitchens. And if you’re worried about leaving your furry friends at home, fret not – the cabins are pet-friendly!
“This area was made famous by author Zane Grey who wrote about the mystical wild Tonto Country,” says Creekside Co-Owner Tami Stensland. “Christopher Creek is brimming with natural beauty and is truly a destination for people who want to hear the wind in the forest, the rushing water of the pristine creek tumbling over small falls or the bugle of a Rocky Mountain Elk.”
For couples seeking a memorable and affordable wedding venue, Creekside has the answer. The newly built wedding site offers stunning views of the Mogollon Rim and Tonto National Forest and can comfortably accommodate up to 150 people on the property itself, eliminating the need to secure off-site accommodations. With a wealth of activities nearby – including stream fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking –entertaining your wedding party has never been easier or more convenient. As an added bonus, Creekside Cabins is an Instagrammer’s paradise, with countless pictureperfect spots to capture your special moments. Whether it’s a family vacation or your dream wedding, you’ll leave with a treasure trove of beautiful memories and photographs to cherish forever.
So why wait? Head over to Creekside Cabins, Tavern and Tours in the village of Christopher Creek – just 22 miles east of Payson and 10 miles west of Woods Canyon Lake – and discover for yourself what makes it the best-kept secret in Payson.
