I provide evidencebased traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern technology that has been FDA approved to decrease pain. I use my experience in healthcare to provide exceptional care. Oftentimes, the patients that I see have already tried everything else.

They have done surgery, tried various medications, physical therapy, injections and more.

Many people think they are too far gone in terms of their pain. In many cases, this can\ lead to depression because they are unable to get out and enjoy life. I am here to tell you that there is hope for a more pain-free life

Answer: The most rewarding part of my job is seeing how patients progress through their treatments and get better. The first phase of treatment can be slow moving. At this phase patients are often impatient for results because they have been in pain for so long. During the second phase of treatment, patients begin to feel the benefits of acupuncture.

They become hopeful, I see an improvement in their mood, and they tell me things like, “I was able to take my dog for a walk without my sciatic pain acting up the rest of the day. I slept all night without waking up with nerve pain in my feet.”

And, “I was able to complete 18 holes of golf, which I haven’t been able to do in years!”

NEW ALDI STORE OPENS

Photo courtesy of city of Phoenix Air France has announced the launch of a nonstop service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, starting May 23. This inaugural route, the first direct flight between Phoenix and France, will operate three times weekly using the Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner.

Flights are scheduled to leave Paris at 10:10 a.m. and arrive in Phoenix at 12:10 p.m., with return flights departing Phoenix at 2:10 p.m. and arriving in Paris at 9:15 a.m. the next day. The service is expected to significantly enhance travel and business links between the two cities.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the route as a major milestone for the city, anticipating new opportunities for exploration and business.

The Dreamliner aircraft will feature a three-class configuration with a total capacity of 279 seats. The new service is projected to contribute a $30 million annual economic impact to the Phoenix community.

A new Aldi grocery store opened in the area to much local fanfare. Located at 4555 E. Cactus Rd., in Phoenix, the store opened its doors on February 1 following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Aldi is known for its unique shopping model designed to keep prices low. Shoppers are reminded to bring their own bags and a quarter for a shopping cart, which is refundable upon return. This approach, along with a no-coupons policy, is part of Aldi’s strategy to offer competitive pricing.

The store offers an array of products, with over 90% being Aldi exclusive brands. While this might mean limited brand-name availability, according to company representatives this strategy means more

Paradise Valley Council Approves Makeover for Historic SmokeTree Resort Rendering courtesy of Walton Global THE PARADISE VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL HAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED A MAJOR MAKEOVER FOR THE SMOKETREE RESORT. Scottsdalebased Walton Global Holdings LLC received the green light on January 11 to transform the currently dormant site into an 82-room luxury resort, following a $14 million acquisition deal in June 2022.

Located at the intersection of Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive, the project signifies a new chapter for the iconic location. The site is near the upcoming Ritz Carlton Paradise Valley and The Palmeraie luxury retail center. The

revamped resort will feature top-notch amenities, including a spa, a pool, and underground parking, enhancing the area’s luxury hospitality offerings.

As reported by the “Phoenix Business Journal,” the new development plan also includes a restaurant, cocktail bar, and café. However, initial proposals for a separate speakeasy and standalone restaurant were dropped during the project’s revision stage. These changes were made in favor of expanding parking facilities, a key consideration in the council’s decision-making process.

The approval marks a significant shift from earlier concepts, reflecting the council’s commitment to balancing

development with community needs.

The move is set to rejuvenate the site, replacing the old façade with a modern, upscale resort. The resort, originally built in 1954, seven years before the town’s incorporation, has been closed since mid-2020.

As demolition and construction pick up pace, the new SmokeTree Resort is poised to become a prominent luxury destination in Paradise Valley, complementing the area’s reputation as a hub for high-end leisure and hospitality.

Their signature program is the Critical Care Program which offers their partners financial assistance to defray the high cost of veterinary care for sick, injured, or abused animals. This allows their rescue partners to “intake” thousands of animals who otherwise would have no chance at life. Their partners depend on these funds to save the lives of the most vulnerable animals. In 2023 alone, the program impacted close to 1,750 dogs and cats; and since inception in 2012, close to 10,000.

City News Scottsdale’s Historic Arabian Horse Show Returns for the 69th Year

The world’s largest Arabian horse show will run from Thursday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 25, featuring the world’s best Arabians, exciting competitions, a shopping expo, and more.

“We’re thrilled to invite unique, beautiful horses from all over the world to join us in Scottsdale for the 69th year,” says Melissa Schalles, executive director of the AHAA. “If you’re curious about Arabians or know nothing about them, this is the perfect show for you – there’s something for everyone here.”

The 2024 show will feature over 2,100

horses who will compete for more than $3 million in prize money. Event goers can look forward to a huge variety of classes where Arabians will show their versatility, beauty, and grace.

The immersive experience will return this year, giving attendees a hands-on experience to learn, touch and ride, hosted

by HoofbeatZ USA, a Phoenix-based organization. The interactive experience, included in the event ticket, introduces newcomers to the world of horses and all the benefits they offer.

Along with the engaging performances, event attendees will have the opportunity to see exhibits featuring fine art, crafts, clothing, and jewelry in the Shopping Expo adjacent to the main arena. More than 300 artisans and entrepreneurs are expected to sell unique goods and offer a wide variety of products and services.

The AHAA will also be celebrating the third annual National Arabian Horse Day on February 19 with special events and activities at the show.

Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography

T

his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures.

It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.

MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE

1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes.

• With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.

2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently.

3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water.

• Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.

4. Observing the Colors Separate • As the water travels up the paper, it will carry the ink from the markers with it.

Here are some thoughts to guide you in the process: 1. AM I SEEKING A ONE-TIME PROFIT, OR DO I WANT TO GENERATE INCOME? A.) Fix and Flip: The activity commonly known as “house flipping” has become increasingly popular over the past few years, with some reality television shows undoubtedly contributing to the popularity. If you do choose to buy and flip a home, doing it in the shortest period of time should produce the maximum one-time profit. However, like many financial matters, pulling that off may be easier said than done. With many of the nation’s more affordable fix and flip properties already largely picked over, and in a market generally featuring rising real estate prices, getting into a fix and flip today generally requires a much more significant capital expenditure (the cost of acquiring the property and repairs) than just a few years ago. Of course, the activity still has the potential to return a nice profit.

B.) Long-Term Ownership: “Buy and Hold” real estate investing has been around longer than house flipping, partly because it historically has been attractive to major investors who are trying to provide a steady cash flow. Think of what you get as rent as your return on the investment you made when you bought the property. When considering a buy and hold real estate investment, focus immediately on the ongoing monthly costs of the mortgage, taxes, utilities, HOA fees, and maintenance. This total monthly outlay must be less than the amount for which the property can be rented, or your contemplated project is a non-starter.

2. WHAT IS THE DEMAND FOR RENTERS IN THE AREA? If you want to invest in buy and hold property, the first step is to assess the demand for renters in the area. Even if you find a great deal on an investment property, it won’t matter unless you can find someone

to live there! Look at other rentals in the area and whether they are being filled. As a general rule, an area with a high percentage of condominiums, townhomes, and apartments has a high rental demand.

3. WHAT IS THE LOCAL MARKET LIKE? Even if home values are increasing nationally, they may not be increasing equally in your local market.

In some areas of the U.S., home values have actually declined recently. It’s best to discuss the market with a knowledgeable real estate professional and to do your research. Also, focus on the local property taxes. For a buy and hold investor, property taxes are an important fixed cost that frequently is the determining factor on whether a profit can be realized on a particular property.

4. SHOULD I MANAGE THE PROPERTY OR HIRE A PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COMPANY? The answer to this question depends on how much time you have and whether it’s financially advisable to hire someone to manage the property for you. Do you want to deal with finding and keeping tenants?

Are you able to do maintenance and repairs on the property when needed? Are you close enough in proximity to the property to manage it? Are you physically capable, and have the desire, to do these things? If not, property management companies

generally charge 7 to 10% of the monthly rent, and sometimes the first month’s rent. If you can make a reasonable profit using a property management company, it probably is advisable to do so, as you will avoid the hassle that comes with finding and managing tenants.

5. AM I FAMILIAR WITH THE LAWS AND REGULATIONS OF INVESTING? Always consult an attorney when deciding to invest in real estate. It’s essential that you have a proper knowledge of the laws and regulations, and follow them accordingly before becoming an investor, and then making a commitment to rent your property.

Health Utilizing your Insurance Benefits with a Naturopathic Physician

I

t’s a new year so that means you may have a new health insurance plan or policy. I always try to help my patients utilize what they can with naturopathic medicine. Board certified and licensed naturopathic physicians in the state of Arizona are not typically contracted with insurance companies and therefore do not accept insurance for office visits. The good news is that many patients are able to utilize some of their insurance benefits. I always recommend that patients contact their insurance company prior to visits to inquire about possible coverage.

HSA/FSA Some plans offer a Health Spending Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA). These accounts can be used to pay for naturopathic visits at the time of service and may also be used for nutritional supplement purchases and specialty labs. Any extra documentation can be provided, and approval will be dependent on your specific plan.

OUT OF NETWORK CLAIMS Some insurance companies may consider naturopathic physicians as out-of-network providers.

Insurance companies may be able to reimburse you for partial or all of your visits with proper documentation. At the time of your visit, you will be provided with the necessary forms, which include Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and diagnostic codes (ICD-10). You can submit these forms along with your receipt to your insurance for possible reimbursement. This may be a mail in form or an online form with uploaded

documentation and receipts. The reimbursement amount will depend on your specific plan.

LABORATORY SERVICES AND IMAGING If you have private insurance and your particular plan covers routine lab work and/or imaging, naturopathic physicians are able to order particular laboratory testing and imaging through your insurance. Sonora Quest and LabCorp are usually the preferred labs for most insurance companies here in Arizona. If you do not carry private insurance or do not have lab work or imaging coverage, there are cash pay options available depending on your specific needs.

Specialty labs such as Food Sensitivity IgG testing, Comprehensive Stool Analysis and others are not covered by insurance and are either paid at the time of purchase or directly to the specific specialty laboratory.

MEDICARE/MEDICAID AND AHCCCS Naturopathic physicians are not eligible to be providers with Medicare/Medicaid as well as state insurance (AHCCCS). Due to this, there are no options for possible reimbursement of visit costs.

Unfortunately, there is no laboratory or imaging coverage if ordered by a naturopathic physician. In this situation, labs can be ordered at cash pay facilities for reasonable pricing.

o I have to quit tennis if I want to avoid surgery?” This was the first question Jerry lobbed at me as we sat in my office.

His once-ace tennis game had been disrupted by a persistent rotator cuff injury, dealing him a double fault in his athletic pursuits.

“I don’t know what else to do, doc. I’ve done e-stim, dry needling, physical therapy exercises — and I am still having pain. The orthopedic surgeon gave me a cortisone shot and told me I’d have

to wait until the tear was bad enough for surgery — which also means I have to wait for the pain to get worse. And I can’t even play now.”

THE ACES AND PAINS Jerry’s story is a common one in our office. He has done everything his insurance allows him to do, but he’s not making a “grand slam” recovery. The good news for Jerry is that there are options outside of insurance that allow him to get back to playing without shoulder pain.

To better understand Jerry’s options, we need to look at why he isn’t better in the first place. The vast majority

of injuries are a result of repetitive, poor movement patterns, which cause wear and tear to the muscle and joint structures in the body. Jerry’s rotator cuff injury was a result of this poor movement pattern.

While the treatments he received focused on correcting the movement pattern, which is crucial, they missed the sweet spot in addressing the rotator cuff injury causing his pain. Sure, the cortisone injection provided temporary relief, but it also caused more damage to the tissue.

EXPERIENCING A LITTLE DEUCE? Jerry found himself in what our team calls “The Gap” in orthopedic medicine — where conservative care is exhausted, surgery isn’t an immediate option, and waiting for the pain to get worse is the only choice.

But it’s also about who will manage your assets and take care of you and your financial affairs if you become incapacitated. With proper planning, you decide that. Without proper planning, a court may get to make the choice.

Incapacity means you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Incapacity can result from an accident, or arise from health issues, dementia, or plain old age.

If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, you need the right legal documents in place to be sure someone else can.

The revocable living trust is the best way to plan for incapacity. When you set up a revocable living trust, you transfer assets from your name to the name of your trust.

While you are alive and well, you control your trust and assets as the trustee. You name a successor trustee to take over upon incapacity and on your death. Jonathan Glazer's new movie presents a unique form of horror: watching a family lead a seemingly normal life overshadowed by an unspeakable evil.

The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly

Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat").

The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire.

The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. However, it is Penelope Cruz who astonishes with her portrayal of quiet heartbreak, delivered with minimal 32 • February 2024 • PARADISE VALLEY VIEW

remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away.

“The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him.

"The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.

It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact.

Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element.

It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth.

This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing.

Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

I

s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain?

You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain.

You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints.

Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration.

The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself.

These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.

This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica.

Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change?
