Going Solar Is Now Easier and Less Expensive
hoever said that all good things must come to an end never saw anything like the Arizona solar industry. With generous government subsidies, rapidly improving technology, and plenty of Arizona sunshine, the past decade has been a great time for homeowners to invest in solar power, and the reasons to go solar are about to get even better after some recent policy victories for energy customers go into effect this month. Arizona’s utility regulator, on November 9, issued a litany of ruleshredding orders to one of the state’s largest power companies, resolving a number of longstanding disputes over burdensome restrictions on solar energy. A few of these orders make solar power even more economically beneficial than it already is. Most importantly, the Arizona Corporation Commission ordered APS to eliminate the “grid-access charge” that it had imposed on owners of home solar systems. This fee, which totaled about $100 a year per household on average, was based on a supposed need to recoup a shortfall in what solar customers contributed to grid maintenance. But after a long debate, the commission found this need to be unsubstantiated and ordered it revoked. Solar-industry companies and their customers are celebrating the removal of this arbitrary financial burden, which promises to enhance the financial returns to an investment in solar. “Arizona got rid of an unjustified and outdated charge that has been a drag on the Arizona solar economy,” said Sara Birmingham, a senior policy director at the Solar Energy Industries Association, in a statement. “We are at a point in our country where we need to focus SSS Horizontal.qxp_Layout 1 11/19/21 3:57 PM Page 1 on deploying more clean energy, and unnecessary utility charges and
fees can be a major deterrent to potential solar customers. This change will more fairly recognize the benefits of local solar adoption and we hope we can expand solar accessibility to even more Arizonans. We commend the commission for reversing course on this harmful and discriminatory charge for residential solar customers in Arizona.” Two other rule revocations lift arbitrary restrictions on the size of customers’ solar systems. APS had previously capped the productive capacity of residents’ systems at 1.5 times their greatest energy demand, which APS calculated on the basis of one hour of peak usage in a year. Another scrapped rule had required customers with systems above a certain KW threshold to buy an expensive new electrical control panel, a mandate with no basis in either technological necessity or the electrical code. This will have the effect of reducing the cost to homeowners of larger system installations by up to $3000. These rule changes, which are effective this month, promise to make a good deal even better. By creating substantial cost savings, increasing home equity, and insulating homeowners from unpredictable fossilfuel prices, solar power has already proven its ability to enhance Arizonans’ financial security and independence. Now APS customers can maximize their energy freedom with fewer arbitrary restrictions on how much solar energy they can harness or how much financial benefit they can derive from it. (GSI). Executive Chef James Moran introduced an inspired new menu of seasonal dishes and drinks to mark the reopening. The reimagined menu offers guests a range of rotating selections that celebrate culinary influences from around the globe, many prepared with local flavors and ingredients. Upcoming Art Adventures at Sonoran Arts League THE SONORAN ARTS LEAGUE IS A NONPROFIT 501(C) (3), VOLUNTEER-BASED, ARTS SERVICE ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO ACTIVELY ADVANCING ART, ARTISTS, AND ART EDUCATION.
This month, they offer a multitude of art classes for North Valley residents to enjoy at The Holland Center, located at 34250 N. 60th Street in Scottsdale. Veterans are invited to take part in a monthly free open studio art workshop on the second Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. This month, it will take place on December 9. Veterans and active-duty service members can work on any of their art for free; guests and spouses are invited to join pending available space for $12. Join a two-session ceramics class with instructor Robin Ray from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, December 10 and 17 to learn advanced hand building techniques. This is designed for adults who have attended an Intro to Ceramics workshop at the Sonoran Arts League or who have prior experience with ceramics. Ceramics materials that are provided will include clay, tools, ware boards, plastic, and underglazes with two rounds of firing. The fee is $150 with a $20 materials fee to be paid to the instructor. Students in third through eighth grades can get in on the pottery painting fun for free from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, December 11. Kids select a bisque-fired ceramic piece and use a variety of glazes and texture materials to

Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers Delivers $1 Million to Arizona Educators THOUGH THANKSGIVING WAS TECHNICALLY CELEBRATED ON NOVEMBER 25, FOR 400 TEACHERS ACROSS ARIZONA – INCLUDING MORE THAN 25 FROM ACROSS THE NORTH VALLEY – IT CAME EARLY THIS YEAR. During the first days of November, in what has become an annual tradition to honor, support and celebrate Arizona’s teachers, the Fiesta Bowl Organization was proud to award $1 million to teachers through the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program. Through a three-day Virtual Draft Day presented by Salt River Project (SRP), 400 teachers from K-12 schools were each given $2,500 to grant a wish in their classrooms. The winners were chosen based on a program in the fall wherein any Arizona K-12 teacher was able to fill out an online application detailing a school or classroom need. The wishes were then verified and selected by random drawing for teachers to receive a grant. Over the six years of the program, Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers has granted $4.7 total million to more than 1,200 Arizona teachers, impacting more than 500,000 children across the state.

Through the program, two local teachers had their wishes granted: • Kimberly Skinner, a fourth-grade teacher at Wildfire Elementary School, will furnish her classroom with inclusive furniture. • Jordan Wolf, a kindergarten teacher at Boulder Creek Elementary School, will provide iPads for the class.

Real Estate Have We Hit the Top of the Market? By Holly Henbest, Realtor
H
ave we hit the top of the local real estate market? The short answer is “no,” but here are some reasons why. Over the last few months, we’ve seen what is being referred to as a “cooling” of the market. Although the “frenzy” has subsided, we have not yet hit the top of the market and prices are continuing to rise. However, they are not continuing to soar. During the “frenzy” last spring, we listed several houses where we received over 20 offers in one day. When we list homes now, we are often seeing between five to ten offers on the first day. So, while we aren’t seeing the volume of offers on a home, we are still typically receiving multiple offers. When you receive five offers and can only sell it to one, that leaves several buyers still in search of a home. Our price per square foot in Maricopa County increased about $10 between September to November. This is not as dramatic as the increases we experienced over the last year, but prices are continuing to rise. While prices continue to rise, we continue to see an inventory shortage. In October, just over 10,000 total homes were sold, which was 8.5% below October 2020. New construction homes were down 22% from last year, but re-sale homes were up 6.6%. A lot of people are looking to new construction homes to help alleviate our inventory issues, but there are not enough new construction homes in process to help compensate for the lack of re-sale inventory. New construction homes are suffering from shortages and delays with product, as well as a shortage of labor. The bigger issue, however, is the number of new construction permits being issued. In September, only 2,325 permits were issued in Maricopa and Pinal Counties; that was the lowest month since May 2020 and it was down 25% from September 2020. With new construction permits on a downward trend, we’re likely to continue to see a housing shortage for quite some time.
The issue of supply and demand remains, which leads a lot of people to assume that the market will crash when we finally catch up with inventory. Keep in mind that, while we will likely continue to see prices increase, they aren’t increasing dramatically, and we now have a new baseline of home prices and a significant population of home owners with equity. Equity in homes is at an all-time high, which will also help to support stability and prevention of a crash. When you think about the recession and the housing crash, a key component to the crash was lack of equity. Homeowners owed more on their home than it was worth, and a significant population of buyers bought their home with little or no down payment, so when the prices fell, they were upside down. The future continues to be bright for our housing market. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Waking up before the rest of the family to exercise, drink coffee while it’s still hot or have some quiet time to plan my day, get my husband and 3-year-old son out the door for work and school, and jumping on my computer to start my workday. I am the Vice President of Marketing and Development for a local charity named Homeward Bound. We serve families facing homelessness and I oversee all our marketing, media, events, fundraising campaigns, and donor engagement. I love fall in Arizona because we can take family walks around the neighborhood after dinner. Most of the evening is spent chasing around an energetic preschooler until bedtime and hopefully enjoying some wine and a book—if I am lucky! In our free time, my husband and I are active in
the philanthropic community and love to travel to new places and try new restaurants. MY FAMILY IS… Everything! I believe that a house is just a shelter, but the family inside makes it a home. My son Avery is super high energy and is always making us laugh. My husband Jose is the Chief Marketing Officer at Fiesta Bowl, so we are big into college football as a family. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My son Avery playing the harmonica and guitar at the same time tapping his foot to the beat, singing some song I didn’t recognize. He looked wise beyond his years, and it made me laugh at how serious he was about it and how cute he was at the same time. THE PERFECT DAY... Would start with plenty of coffee, spending time with family on some sort of adventure in the sun, followed by a relaxing dinner and drinks while enjoying the sunset. Probably on a beach!

may limit your opportunities. However, you may also be able to find scholarships from other sources that apply specifically for older students. Your school’s financial aid office may be a helpful resource. • Loans. Adult students are eligible to take out traditional student loans. If you do, be thoughtful about the amount you borrow and diligent about repaying them quickly after graduation. You may be able to deduct a portion of the student loan interest from your gross income, subject to certain limitations. • Tax credits. There may be opportunities to reduce your tax bill if you qualify for education-related tax credits. For example, the Lifetime Learning Credit is a tax credit of up to $2,000 per tax return for qualifying higher education expenses (income limits apply). Which option – or combination of options – is right for you? Enrolling as a full-time student means higher upfront costs and a bigger time commitment. Yet, it can result in a degree or certification faster, which may be ideal if you are eligible for a higher-paying position afterward or if you are funding your schooling through scholarships and loans. If you choose to complete a class at a time, your education will take longer. Financially, this could allow you to absorb tuition and fees into your regular budget or pull the funds from a 529 account that is earning investment income in the meantime. Additionally, doing so may maximize your tax credit and reimbursement options. No matter how you fund higher education, consider how the cost fits within your overall financial strategy. A good place to start is to sit down with a financial advisor to discuss how you can prioritize school amid your other financial goals.

A big component of this beautiful care comes from volunteers who visit with patients and families. Volunteer Gretchen Surridge fell in love with dementia patients after caring for her own father. “I love the sweetness I see in them. I enjoy the challenge of finding a way to break through and get to the person who is still there. They are not the same, but they are still there. It’s gratifying to unlock their happy memories. They have a whole life story, and I want to tap into that.” There are many rewarding ways to volunteer — from storytelling, art, dance, games and reading to nature walks around the beautiful campus courtyard. Med student Jia Kai Pan enjoys soothing families with his violin. “It amazes me how music can open someone’s heart,” he says. “I see them perk up and turn toward me — and sometimes, even the ones who don’t really speak anymore start to sing.” The Dementia Care and Education Campus has a special need for volunteers with professional talents — for example,
licensed/certified hair stylists, nail artists and yoga instructors who enjoy pampering someone with a relaxing experience that lifts or calms the spirit. Volunteer Debi Wineroth sees how people light up when she trims or styles their hair. “They sit taller in their wheelchairs or smile and stare at themselves in the mirror. There’s something special about putting caring hands on someone and taking them back to a time when life was more normal, and they felt beautiful. I’m so grateful to give them that bit of dignity.” Lynn Tolmachoff is a longtime volunteer manager with Hospice of the Valley. “Our volunteers are so diverse, but they all provide that one-on-one support to our patients, meeting them where they are,” she says. “They help redirect someone who may be confused, they reassure someone who is distressed, and they bring indescribable joy to someone who only knows how to live in the present. They are a true gift.” So, as we look toward the holiday season and into a new year, perhaps it’s the perfect time to ponder our own unique gifts. And even more, how to give those gifts away. hange is inevitable. With estate planning, you put in place the best plan you can at the time. However, as your life proceeds, and the law twists and turns, your plan may need an update. So, when should you review – and possibly renew – your estate plan? CHANGES IN THE LAW One change that can make a difference in your plan isn’t even something you might know about. Federal or state law may change, and your plan might need to be adjusted to address the new laws.

THE BIG FOUR OF LIFE EVENTS – MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, BIRTH AND DEATH It seems obvious that if you get married or divorced, you need to change your plan. When you leave a marriage, leave the old estate plan and replace it with a new plan. On marrying, don’t forget to change the plan you did before marriage. I’ve had to console the spouse who finds out too late that her husband failed to adjust his plan and didn’t change his life insurance or IRA beneficiaries.
For example, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, changing the former trust law completely. If your trust was put in place before 2008, you need a review, because the law on which it was based is now very different.

The federal estate tax exemption has changed over the years as well. The exemption (what you can give away in life and at death without taxes) has been as low as $600,0000 but is now $11.7 million per person. arlier this year, Arizona became the fifteenth state in the nation to legalize recreational marijuana. Now, adults ages 21 and over can legally purchase marijuana (also known as cannabis) in its various forms from qualified dispensaries.

“It is not uncommon to see our patient consultants spending a significant amount of time with customers, tailoring their cannabis uses to their specific needs,” Stewart says. “Educating the consumer is as important as treating them. We have a motto: passion for the plant and patient.” To give back to their patients and the community at large, ANC often has thoughtful deals and affordable options—especially when it comes to cannabis for medical use. When a new or returning patient or recreational client comes in, they meet with an educated patient consultant and go over questions like: • What is your budget? • What is the patient/client looking to accomplish? • How do you want to ingest the cannabis? (Smoking, eating, etc.)
Looking toward the future, Hicks excitingly shares that ANC has purchased a 60-acre outdoor growing space in Wilcox to continue growing their own products. She also plans for ANC to continue connecting with local businesses and is considering a local business fair to build connections in the North Phoenix community.
They then make recommendations on their experiences and product knowledge. If a patient/ client is using the bud of the plant, they will weigh it out right there. They also always have deals happening to make sure that patients receive the best deals possible.

s you may have heard, our locally supported bond election did not pass. Despite the results, I want to thank everyone who supported this bond. Many of you worked tirelessly to communicate the facts and you encouraged our community to vote. First, I want you to know how thankful I am that our Governing Board approved this bond election. This was not an easy decision and was not taken lightly. Living in a state that is ranked 48th in the country for education funding with severe cuts to capital funding over the past eight years, bond elections are inevitable. Our board is not only committed to serving our current students and families, but they are
also working to help make CCUSD a proactive organization that is prepared for the future for our students. Second, even though the bond did not pass, we will do our best to plan and prepare for this future. There are many possible options and, as always, we will do our best to find creative solutions to the challenges and opportunities ahead. Although this was not the outcome we predicted, we respect the collective vote of our constituents, and we are committed to providing all CCUSD students with an education of the highest quality. Our institution serves as a cornerstone to a strong economy and democracy, and I want to encourage you to continue supporting and sharing the positive news about our exceptional district.

All CCUSD Schools Receive Grants Totaling Over $25,000

he Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation (CCUEF) is pleased to announce that all schools within the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD) recently received grants totaling over $25,000 to support teachers and their classrooms. In 2009, the Cave Creek Unified Education Foundation launched as a 501c3 with the mission to support programs for learning in all CCUSD schools and to establish a partnership between the educational community and local businesses. The Foundation has awarded more than $200,000 in grants over the last 10 years. The grants are applied to purchasing materials that fall into one of the four pillars that CCUEF supports: resources, international learning, music and the arts, and health and wellness.

The Horizon Huskies beat the Millennium Tigers in three games, 25-15, 25-14, and 25-15. The Horizon Huskies ended the season with a record of 38-5. “Winning this state championship was even more special as I had coached many of them for three to four years. I thank the assistant coaches, parents, staff, administration, my family, and all the players for being a part of this achievement,” adds Coach McKenzie. PARADISE VALLEY HIGH CREST TEACHER NAMED 2021 ASTA HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER OF THE YEAR Amanda Cherry, a science teacher in the Center for Research in Engineering, Science, and Technology (CREST) program at Paradise Valley High School, received the 2021 High School Science Teacher of the Year award presented

of An Interfaith Holiday Season By Nadine Bubeck
G
rowing up I always wanted a Christmas tree, and like most Jewish kids, I had immense Christmas envy. Sure, my parents went big for Hanukkah, but still, I put out cookies and milk hoping Santa wouldn’t forget me… and go figure, he never did. I tell my kids they’re the lucky ones— they get to celebrate both holidays as my husband and I come from different backgrounds. While things can be a tad confusing, we’re flooding our children with tradition and instilling in them values varying religions have in common: being a good person, compassion, integrity, and faith. To us, the holiday season is about a twinkling Christmas tree and lighting the menorah. It’s about listening to jolly jams, watching holiday movies, visiting Santa, and spinning the dreidel. It’s about opening presents—maybe too many— considering we celebrate eight crazy nights and the joy of Christmas morning. It’s about discussing the miraculous meaning of Hanukkah and attending church on Christmas. And it’s about believing—simply believing in the magic of the season.
If you’re anything like us, juggling holidays and striving to find meaning, remember you’re not alone. As parents, we aim to pave “the right path” for our children, but I’ve come to realize there’s beauty in our winding journey, and that is what makes it special, interesting, and sacred. Here are some of our annual traditions to ring in the holidays. READ Sure, we’re stocked with Christmas books, but one of my favorites is a good read that’s ideal for interfaith families with young children. My son’s former kindergarten teacher introduced us to the book “Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama,” by Selina Alko, and it’s a colorfully illustrated, beautiful story showcasing a mix of two traditions. The storyline makes for an excellent road map to help navigate the holidays. DO SOMETHING GOOD Every year we bring goodies to our hospital’s NICU—whether little gifts for the newborn babies or cookies for the nurses working overtime. Pick a place special to your family and drop off some treats or have your kids choose a few toys they don’t play with anymore to donate to a children’s shelter. Teaching your kids to give back is the true spirit of the season.
ARRANGE A NEIGHBORHOOD GIFT EXCHANGE A neighborhood gift exchange is a simple way to celebrate with friends without going overboard. With Mercy Care Advantage and its broad range of benefits and services, you can confidently say, “I’m Covered!” Mercy Care Advantage, an Arizona-based not-for-profit health plan, is a comprehensive health and prescription drug plan serving individuals throughout Arizona whose special needs and/or financial status makes them eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. To qualify for Mercy Care Advantage, you need both Medicare Parts A & B and you must be eligible to receive AHCCCS Medicaid benefits. Medicare and AHCCCS Medicaid eligibility are verified at the time of enrollment. he North Pole Experience (NPX), the Home of Santa’s Workshop, is heading into their twelfth year of opening their workshop doors to families from around the world to build toys with the elves. Located in Flagstaff, the North Pole Experience is the only one of its kind in the United States, providing guests the utmost unique Christmas adventure of a lifetime. The NPX adventure begins at the Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, which is decked out in millions of lights. When families arrive to Little America, they will check in and receive their golden ticket to Santa’s Workshop. The golden ticket grants access to board one of Santa’s trolleys, which is where the North Pole Experience begins. Families take a ride through a magic portal to Santa’s massive workshop in the middle of the forest. As guests pass through the portal, Christmas music fills the trolley, lights flash, and children close their eyes. Before they know it, they have reached the North Pole. There in front of them lies the secret of all secrets: Santa’s massive workshop in the middle of the North Pole Forest. Children receive high-clearance access to build toys with the elves, interacting with the workshop bustle. Families visit Santa’s main factory floor, which is filled with conveyor belts and soaring ceilings filled with gifts and packages. The fun doesn’t stop there as you stop for a visit with Mrs. Claus and enjoy scrumptious “Yeti-o’s” (sugared donuts) and “snowman soup” (hot chocolate with marshmallows) in the North Pole Bakery before heading into Elf University.

IN THEATERS Dune
Spencer A fable about Princess Diana set over three days. Haunting, but not scary, Spencer is strangely a relatable movie. The anxiety that Diana feels throughout the film, in one of Kristen Stewart’s finest roles, is realistic and terrifying, sometimes going into surreal. The fuzzy visuals add to the mood of the film, giving it a lovely but still unsettling mood. Jonny Greenwood’s score is outstanding, very different from his usual film work, more like his earlier Radiohead days in how somber it comes across. If you can stomach how patient it is as a film, you will be rewarded with an incredible experience. Eternals
have praised this film for diverging from the usual Marvel fare, but to me it didn’t go far enough. Every now and then, an interesting idea about these characters’ roles pops its head, and almost goes somewhere. But then, the script does nothing with it and chooses to focus on something else, like the usual forced humor of Marvel films or long scenes of dull exposition. You feel bad for the actors here, trying so desperately to get something out of this material when they have so little to work with, but only Brian Tyree Henry comes out succeeding. Most of all, for a film with the lore it has, it strangely does little with it and takes potentially grand images and worlds and wastes them. What could have been something special in this series turned out to be another disposable picture to add to the Disney+ library.
ON NETFLIX The Harder They Fall
In the far future, a young man must face his destiny when his family is under attack over control of a planet and its resources. Dune is the ideal blockbuster and a showcase of Denis Villenueve at the height of his filmmaking career. With worldbuilding not seen since The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, each faction, character and planet feel alive and breathing, despite their different amounts of screen time. In spite of its handling as an adventure/action film (which it delivers), the film is filled with several moments straight out of a horror movie with Paul’s terrible visions of war and the scenes on Giedi Prime. At the same time, the tragic moments pack their necessary punch and the cast is one of the best ensembles in recent years. A true masterpiece, and likely to be a defining film of its time, Dune is not to be missed.
They Fall establishes Jeymes Samuel well. An homage that doesn’t become a copy, energetic but still thoughtful, it’s a rare Netflix original with genuine personality to it. Portrayed like a tall tale of these real-life people, the cast brings them to life with the tone that fits its time while still modernizing it. The old west feels like it’s at the end of its peak in this film, complimented by the production design, which is both complex and minimal when needed. Most of all, the action is exciting with each blast, explosion and punch hitting their mark. The Harder They Fall is one of Netflix’s best films yet.
