REAL ESTATE WEDNESDAYS THE HOME OWNERSHIP INDUSTRY PARTNERING WITH THE SALVATION ARMY TO RING THE BELLS THIS SEASON
A
young mother approaches the supermarket door and her two children light up with anticipation. She stops to search her purse for loose change as her little boy jumps up and down. When she finds two quarters, she gives them to her child and he rushes to the red kettle. Once there, he carefully drops the coins, one by one, into the slot, receiving a thank you and a smile from the bell ringer nearby. This scene plays out over and over again throughout the season and is often a child’s first experience with charitable giving and the Salvation Army. Real Estate Wednesdays began in 2013 when super volunteer, Marlene Klotz-Collins explained to JoAnn Callaway at lunch that on Wednesdays, the Salvation Army had difficulty recruiting volunteers and consequently had to pay minimum-wage workers to ring the bells at red kettles. “Joseph and I can do Wednesdays”, JoAnn said, and before dessert she had volunteered the entire Home Ownership Industry, agents, brokers, lenders, title officers and affiliates, in Maricopa county to ring the bells as well. They just didn’t know it yet. That first year, more than 1,100 Home Ownership Industry volunteers rang the bells at almost 100 kettles each Wednesday between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last season, the effort grew to over 3,000 participants and topped the million-dollar mark since its inception. “Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without ringing the bells,” says Alison Hudgins, Title Officer at Old Republic. “I love the people and the Salvation Army stories they tell as they stuff a bill into the slot.” Income from the kettles remains a big part of the Army’s budget as they provide services such as family shelters, meals for the elderly, disaster response, abuse counseling, addiction recovery, summer water drives,
the Kroc Center and more all year. At Thanksgiving, the Army feeds 3,000 meals at the Phoenix Convention Center to the homeless. The big event is Christmas day, when more than 5,000 enjoy a holiday meal at the convention center. Free haircuts and phone calls anywhere in the USA are offered, and clothing is made available to those in need. All this comes from Red Kettle donations. DID YOU KNOW ? Commissioned to write a new Christmas song for Bing Crosby’s 1951 movie, The Lemon Drop Kid, Jay Livingston and Roy Evans were inspired by the Salvation Army kettles in front of The New York City department stores. “Silver Bells” became a Christmas standard and has been recorded by more than twenty major artists including Elvis Presley and Twisted Sister. As you visit your local retailer this season and when you hear the ringing bells, stop for a moment and say hi to the volunteer. It just may be your Realtor, home inspector or mortgage lender.

DEDICATION OF ELLIE & MICHAEL ZIEGLER TEEN CENTER HELD BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE (BGCS) FORMALLY DEDICATED THE NEWLY REFRESHED ELLIE AND MICHAEL Ziegler Teen Center at its Vestar Branch on Monday, October 22, 2018. The renovations included new paint, flooring, a wall mural, new furniture, technology and safety updates, and the addition of a half gym to the existing Vestar facility built in 2007. The dedication ceremony marks the culmination of the 2017-18 One in a Million community matching challenge to fund new construction and revitalize the teen centers at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s Thunderbirds and Vestar Branches. Community leaders Ellie and Michael Ziegler provided the matching funds igniting community support and donations for the teen projects in the Grayhawk and Desert Ridge® communities.
“For more than a decade, this center has provided a safe place for teens after school and during the summer,” said Ellie Ziegler, speaking to more than 60 dedication ceremony attendees at the Vestar Branch. “Michael and I want to thank this community for the passionate, unrivaled support in recognizing this need and for continuing to believe in our kids” Nearly 100 teens attend the center at Vestar every day. One of BGCS’s busiest Clubs, Vestar has more than 2,500 registered members, 600 of whom are teens.
“Ellie and Michael have invested in local youth and our community with a commitment to creating higher education opportunities and providing positive role models for youth and teens,” said Robyn Julien, BGCS President and CEO. “Upon hearing of the need at our Vestar Branch for safety updates, technical upgrades and a refresh of the facility including the half gym addition, Ellie and Michael led the cause. We are so proud to have their name on this facility.” “For me the Ellie & Michael Ziegler Teen Center is where I go after school to have fun with my friends, get my homework done and hang out in the computer room making music,” said Bella, Club teen and Keystone member. “We volunteer at St. Mary’s Food Bank and work on service projects to make our com-
munity better for everyone,” she explained about the Keystone academic and community service program. The Ellie & Michael Ziegler Teen Center includes the Rikki & Barry Chasse Games Room; the Cox Innovation Lab; the Terri & John Heitel Homework Room; the Kevin Rowe Teen Lounge; the Michele & Stephen Schwanz Teen Office; and the Liz & Mike Thorell Music & Multimedia Center. Julien recognized all of the investors for their contributions and commitment to youth and teens in the community. The Vestar Club was named in honor of Vestar Corporation who provided the interior design for the refresh project. “Vestar Corporation continues to put kids and community first by helping with big and little things around the Club to keep it fresh, fun and safe,” said Julien. “We know there are many charities all of you can donate to,” Michael, high school junior and Vestar Keystone Club President, told the honorees and donors at the ceremony. “We are here being active, playing volleyball, planning and completing service projects helping others and our community, getting our homework done and hanging out with friends— in person—not on our phones. We are developing skills that help us work with others and doing things we can put on our resumes and college applications...all because of you.”

CACTUS BRICK 5TH ANNUAL A LEGO WINTER WONDERLAND LEGO LOVERS REJOICE! CACTUS BRICK WILL BE BACK AT DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE FOR THEIR 5TH ANNUAL A LEGO WINTER WONDERLAND.
Formed in June of 2008, Cactus Brick is a group of adult (over 18 only) fans of LEGO who collect, build, play with, and share ideas about the LEGO hobby. The group
meets officially on a monthly basis and presents their creations at public displays throughout the year. These larger than life displays are an impressive sight to see for all ages. Past exhibits have been hosted at venues such as the Tempe History Museum, AZ Science Center, Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest and more. This year’s Winter Wonderland display will include a winter village, city/train layout, an Aquaman underwater section, Star Wars and a Build a Mosaic for the public to help with! When asked about it what it takes to bring this festive creation to life, Club Secretary and Organizer Corey Gehman answers, “Most of the display is pre-built and we just assemble the sections. Most sections are 10” x 10” in size. For this display, it usually takes us about 15 hours to setup with an average of five or six
people working on it. There will be contributions from 10 to 12 people for the display. We have no idea how many pieces are in it, we keep building each section until it’s done. The various sections and buildings have been built over time. Some will only be a few days old while others have been built over the past several years. Each display we do usually adds a bit more or a different theme. This allows our displays to gradually get larger and more varied over time.” Bring the family and enjoy free admission between November 23 – December 16. The display will be open Fridays from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. and will be located in the storefront across from Justice. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM HAS FESTIVE HOLIDAY SEASON AHEAD THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS ABOUT COMING TOGETHER AND CELEBRATING THINGS WE LOVE. IT IS ALSO A TIME FOR FAMILIES TO COME TOGETHER AND LEARN ABOUT OTHER CULTURES. The Musical Instrument Museum offers a variety of cultural concerts and holiday activities to spread holiday cheer. fter a long work day, most parents look forward to the after-school conversation they may have with their child. Here are a few tips to encourage your child to open up and talk about the school day. SHARE INFORMATION ABOU T YOU R DAY By talking with your child about your day, your child may be more open about sharing details about his or her day at school. 5 TIPS FOR ADOPTING A PET DURING THE HOLIDAYS

W
hen it comes to adopting pets during the holidays, the Phoenix Metro Chamber of Commerce wants to help dogs and cats find their forever homes. That’s one reason the chamber, which serves the Greater Phoenix metro area, is teaming up with Floor & Decor in Glendale to host a Pet Adoption Day on Saturday, December 15. The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 5880 W. Bell Road, and benefit the non-profit foster groups, Arf-Anage Dog Rescue and Saving Orphan Souls Rescue. “This is the time of year that many people are tempted to surprise their family or friend with a lovable, furry pet. While we want folks to come out and adopt a dog or a cat, we also want to make sure the adoption is a good match,” said Jason Bressler, founder and executive director of the
Phoenix Metro Chamber of Commerce (PMCC). Cathy Roe Mullooly is the founder and CEO of Arf-Anage Dog Rescue, which is a non-profit, all-breed dog rescue specializing in care, rehabilitation and rehoming of momma dogs and pups in local shelters, and pups with medical conditions. Ro Perez is CEO and founder of Saving Orphan Souls Rescue, a dual feline and small dog rescue group that provides a loving, safe environment with proper medical care to those orphaned souls left out on the streets, dumped at the county shelters, or animals that are abused or relinquished by their owners. They offered these tips for adopting a pet during the holiday season: 1. DON’T MAKE IT A SU RPRISE Spur-of-the-moment, emotional decisions sometimes backfire, so tell

your family or friend that you want to help them adopt a pet and bring them with you. If there are any dogs at home, bring them too, to make sure they get along with the dog or cat up for adoption. 2. CONSIDER LIFESTYLE FACTORS If your loved one is older or has health challenges, a grown pet might be a better fit. Conversely, a young energetic puppy might do better with a family that has a big yard. Be sure to consider family members’ allergies too. 3. PREPARE YOU R HOME AHEAD OF TIME Certain holiday decorations, like tinsel and ribbons, can be hazardous to dogs and cats who chew and swallow them. In addition, poinsettia plants and chocolate are poisonous to pets who eat them. Make sure your home
is safe before bringing your new furry family member home. 4. ESTABLISH A ROU TINE Your new pet will need time to get used to his or her new surroundings and establishing routines will help them feel more secure. Try to feed, walk, and play with them around the same time each day. 5. BE PATIENT The holidays can be stressful for everyone, including pets. If possible, carve out extra time to play or snuggle with them. If your new pet is exhibiting negative behaviors, like scratching furniture or having potty accidents inside the house, ask your vet or an animal advocate for some advice to help them break bad habits. AVOID THE NAUGHTY LIST: DON’T LET THE HOLIDAYS RUIN YOUR CREDIT

ooking for the “perfect gifts,” paired with enticing retail discounts and deals, can pressure holiday shoppers to spend more than they can afford. As a result, consumers may max out credit card limits or miss payments, negatively affecting credit scores. In addition, store credit cards may offer instant discounts that are tempting at the register -- but that new application could decrease your credit score. Not having enough money for presents and the strain holiday shopping puts on
their finances are big causes of anxiety for many consumers, according to a recent Experian survey. However, many of these same consumers seem to be on the right track: in the survey, respondents listed several smart financial resolutions, including 28 percent who want to improve their credit scores, while almost 50 percent said saving more was a New Year’s resolution.
• CREDIT HISTORY: Those who’ve never used credit before will likely have a low score, or no score at all, while credit accounts that have been active for a long time reflect positively on your score, as does a healthy mix of accounts, such as having a mortgage, a few credit cards and auto loans.

SEDONA: TLAQ U EPAQ U E FESTIV AL OF LIG HTS We love visiting Sedona whenever we get the chance, but this year we hope to make it to their annual Festival of Lights celebration.
The tradition of the Tlaquepaque Festival of Lights began 46 years ago and is a highly anticipated holiday event in Sedona. Admission is free for this event, where musical entertainment, a visit from Santa, and free cider lead up to the lighting of 6,000 luminarias in the Tlaquepaque courtyards and walkways. You may also purchase specially designated luminarias to honor cancer survivors in the Patio del Norte store in Tlaquepaque. The lovely, twinkling pathways wind through the new Electric Desert display and lead to nine different musical entertainment areas, and dinner and warm refreshments are available each night. There are some great realtors servic ing our c ommunity, but the reason we started “The Team” is bec ause we saw a need. We worke d on an interac tive map which allows visitors to select specific subdivisions to get a better feel for the area. Our searc h tool is so easy, a nd we c reate free top-notc h CMA’s (Comparative Marke t Analysis) for our c lients thinki ng about selling their homes or even just for residents who are c urious about their home value. Not to mention the searc h tool, ( unlike Z illow) that will allow you to searc h all parts of Arizona, w ithout seeing homes that are pending, unde r c ontrac t, or sold. Tell us about yourself. I have been in real estate personally for over 10 years. I know the residential real estate side of the business, a s well as the lending side of the business. I started out as a lender many years ago and found that selling homes was muc h more rewarding. We love giving bac k a nd wouldn’t hire anyone who didn’t feel that way. I wouldn’t be in this business, if I didn’t enjoy people. I think s ome agents are too transac tional and lose the relationship side of the business. Selling or buying a home is very personal and, i n my opinion, s hould be treated that way.
I live in the Desert Ridge® area with my amazing wife Maria, a nd three adorable c hildren; Cash (7), Maya (4), a nd Dublin (2). Yes, w e have our hands full, but wouldn’t c hange it for the world! We love living in Desert Ridge and sending our c hildren to sc hool here. The Desert Ridge® area boasts some of the best public sc hools in the state, a nd we have been very pleased with our experienc e thus far. Is it harder to buy or sell a home during the holidays? The marke t has been hot for a few years now in Arizona. Multiple offers and over-aski ng-pric e sales have somewhat bec ome the norm if pric ed at marke t in desirable areas. B uyers c ompeting in this marke t

That said, buying over the holidays c an help you slic e through the buyer pool. While others are trimming their turke y or searc hing for the perfec t present, you c an be off snagging the home you want! For sellers, t his is a great time to get some exc lusive eyeballs on your property. B ec ause most sellers will wait until “after the holidays” to list, you ha ve an opportunity to marke t your home to hungry buyers ready to make a qui c k de c ision. The fac t is, a fter the ball drops in NY on New Year’s, w e experienc e the highest number of new listings. If your puppy is too young to walk on the ground, they c an still be c arried outside for short soc ialization experienc es. If you k now someone who c an sew, you c an even c onstruc t a puppysling out of some extra fabric . B e sure to bring puppy food or treats to reward them when they spot something new or meet a new human. Q. What is the first thing you tell someone, that is the foundation of creating a social dog? A. Always be on the look out for opportunities to c reate positive experienc es with other dogs. A positive experienc e does not always mean a direc t interac tion with another dog. It is good prac tic e to let your new puppy or dog see other dogs, without going up to meet them. Puppy-playdates are still a great idea, but there will be many times when you spot another dog ac ross the park without meeting them. Teac hing your puppy or dog that it’s ok to see other dogs without interac ting c an help prevent leash reac tivity later in life. Tip: Treat your puppy for seeing the other dog and staying c alm. Then enc ourage your puppy to look bac k up at you for another reward. Continue this as you walk past the other dog. Q. Is a dog park a good place to teach my dog socialization? A. Think of it this way… A supervised puppy playdate is lik e having some friends over for dinner. A dog park is lik e attending an outdoor music festival. There will be lots of strangers behaving in a variety of ways, not all of them polite. We suggest having small playdates over going to the dog park for soc ialization. Q. What are some tips for having a successful dog playdate? A. • Keep any play session short and sweet. A q uic k playdate will be more suc c essful than a long drawn out one. It is rare for dogs to tire out northtatumtimes.com
at exac tly the same rate. Inevitably one of the dogs will get tired and want to rest. If the other playmate doesn’t let their friend rest, their friend is lik ely to get irritable. It is always ok to c almly remove your dog from the situation when they begin to get too tired or overwhelmed. • B ring food and toy items to mak e sure it is a lot of fun for your dog. Only use food or toy items if you are confident your dog is not possessive of these things with other dogs present. Its best to bring more than one k ind of treat just in c ase you enc ounter something that is sc ary or overwhelming to your dog. Giving your dog treats while they are afraid won’t reward their fear, but if your dog refuses the food they are too fearful or too distrac ted. Walk away from the area until your dog c an relax or refoc us on you again. • Praise your dog for good interac tion and enc ourage them to c ome “c hec k -in” with you periodic ally. If you c an use food, mak e fun sounds and c all your dog when they are nearby and not ac tively playing. Give them a reward for c oming to you, then send them off to play again. B efore long, your dog should start c oming to “c hec k -in” all by themselves, reward periodic ally so it stays reliable.

Q. What are some other ways to help with socializing my dog? A. Sign up for a group training c lass is a great way to get regular soc ial prac tic e. Did your parents sign you up for a sport or danc e c lass as k id? Maybe they sent you to summer c amp. Either way, the goal was to c reate a struc tured setting where you c ould meet other k ids and learn some new sk ills. That’s a puppy obedienc e or puppy agility c lass for your four-legged k iddo. Adult dogs also often benefit from working in a group c lass setting. The Americ an Kennel Club offers the Canine Good Citizen certification. You can take a course with your dog to prepare or find a loc al CGC evaluator to test your dog’s sk ills. If obedienc e training isn’t your style, think outside the dog c rate for a more interesting c lass or sport. Consider tak ing a c lass that appeals to your dog’s natural breed instinc ts. OVERLORD
A group of Americ an soldiers disc over a sec ret lab underneath a German radio tower, where they disc over experiments to reanimate the dead. Overlord is a c razy, entertaining movie. It delivers on the exc iting grindhouse-lik e ac tion and monster effec ts you expec t from the trailers, while delivering two great leads with Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell. The dynamic they have together is not only interesting, but it leads to some surprising themes from the film, that of going lower than your enemy in order to win. It’s impressive and makes the film that much more engrossing. Nothing revolutionary, but it’s one not to miss.
ROMA
Roma shows us a year in the life of a family and their nanny as the father is away on business. Empathy, that’s the word to desc ribe Roma. You feel nothing but empathy for Cleo and the family she work s for. The ac tors, many of whom are first-timers, earn it, because they are amazing - espec ially Yalitza Aparic io as Cleo. Alfonso Cuaron also impresses not only with his direc tion, but also his work as his own c inematographer, with the film featuring several long takes that put you into the world. While the film will be seen by many on Netflix, the sound design is fantastic and must be experienc ed in theaters. It c aptures every raindrop, c ar and person walk ing by, and it’s absolutely immersive, and must get a nomination from the Ac ademy. NOTE: Roma will only be playing in selec t theaters, and will be available on Netflix on Dec ember 14.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
The story about the rise, fall and resurgenc e of Freddie Merc ury and Q ueen. Every biopic has to tak e some c reative liberties with history, that’s understandable. B ut B ohemian Rhapsody c rosses many lines. The depic -
tion of Freddie Merc ury being the only diva of the band while B rian May & Roger Taylor were perfec t friends that just wanted to help is rather disturbing, mostly due to the fac t that the latter two were heavily involved in the mak ing of this movie. And if you’re wondering why John Deac on isn’t listed in that, well that’s bec ause not only is he not c redited lik e May & Taylor, but he is constantly shafted in the film, essentially relegated to just “the fourth member of Q ueen” (the man doesn’t even get a proper introduc tion sc ene). There are plenty other moments I c ould bring up, but I think the fac t that the big emotional sc ene towards the end, where Merc ury reveals his AIDS diagnosis is the worst example. The film depicts this as happening just before Live Aid in 1985, when in reality Merc ury was not diagnosed until 1987. It’s REALLY bad when your big “tearjerker bit” has to be falsified. This c ould be forgiven if B ohemian Rhapsody was at least interesting, but it basic ally follows every music al biopic trope to a T and isn’t even shot or edited interestingly outside a sparse few moments. That’s really unfortunate given how extraordinary of a band Q ueen was. Rami Malek ’s amazing performanc e as Merc ury, whic h c aptures all his mannerisms and traits while rarely feeling lik e an imitation, c ouldn’t save this movie.
SUSPIRIA
A danc e ac ademy sec retly run by a c oven of witc hes prepares for an upc oming ritual as a psyc hotherapist searc hes for a missing student. This is how you do a remak e. Keep the spirit of the original film while making your own path, and Luc a Guadagnino does that. Creepy, beautiful, and terrifying, Suspiria will never mak e you leave its world until the c redits roll. Thom York e’s sc ore is breathtak ing, experimenting with different types of music not expec ted in a horror film. A great cast all around, but Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth, Tilda Swinton and “Lutz Esberdorf” are the greats. And don’t even get me started on the c inematography. A word of warning though: if you have a weak stomac h, this might not be for you.
