Brought by visionaries and operators of Tomaso’s Italian Restaurant, Tomaso’s When in Rome, and Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher is a chef-driven neighborhood restaurant developed by husband-and-wife duo Joey and Cristina Maggiore and Flora Tersigni. “I was inspired by my father who is a Sicilian-born chef and created an Italian institution that has been making classic Italian meatballs for over 40 years,” said Joey Maggiore, co-founder and executive chef. “Equal parts classic and progressive, we’re excited to bring Tomaso’s famous version combined with creative, modern modifications in a meatball and charcuterie centric spot.” With casual dine-in and to-go services, The Sicilian Butcher is primarily centered on a build-your-own meal experience with gourmet meatballs and Italian-cured meats for charcuterie boards. Using family recipes, they introduce 15 craft meatball varieties including dry-aged steak, lamb, ahi tuna, lump crab, and Tomaso’s Sicilian version made with ground veal, prime beef, pork, pine nuts, raisins, and pecorino cheese, and meatless/ vegetarian choices such as lentil and eggplant parmigiana. The choose-yourown-meatball adventure continues with eight sauce options such as garlic-basil marinara, pesto trapanese, parmigiano cream sauce, truffle mushroom, and spicy arrabbiata and guests can mix or match their meatballs with a Caesar salad, houseextruded pasta, bread for sandwiches, polenta or risotto. The menu extends from salads and flatbreads,
to assemble-your-own charcuterie boards where guests can select from a range of Italian meats such as salami, prosciutto, and porchetta, artisanal cheeses, house-cured olives, pickled vegetables, and sweet and savory jams. Over 10 signature bruschetta and charcuterie boards are featured on the menu including a polenta board, mozzarella board, and a five-foot long Sicilian Butcher’s board with gourmet meatballs, cured meats, and bruschetta. The Sicilian Butcher enlisted master mixologist, cocktail consultant, and Guinness World Record holder, Sheldon Wiley, from New York City to collaborate on the cocktail design and beverage experience. CATCHING A FLIGHT? KNOW YOUR RIGHTS By Don Alvarez Partner at Radix Law

illions of travelers are expected to take to the skies this holiday season, each one undoubtedly hoping their trip will go smoothly from takeoff to landing. From weather delays to lost luggage, we all know things will inevitably go wrong for many of us. The best thing you can do is be prepared and arm yourself with information about your rights as a passenger. The good news is, the U.S Department of Transportation has established very specific rights for air travelers. Here are the main things to know before you head to the airport: DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS: • Airlines are required to notify you of flight delays of more than 30 minutes, as well as flight cancellations and diversions within 30 minutes of the carrier becoming aware of a change in flight status. • The flight status must be posted in the boarding gate area, on the carrier’s website, through an airlines flight status notification service, and via the carrier’s telephone reservation system upon inquiry by any person.
LOST OR DAMAGED LUGGAGE: • Airlines are required to compensate you for lost, delayed, or damaged bags. • If a passenger’s bag is delayed, airlines will pay reasonable expenses the passenger incurs while he or she waits for the delayed bag. • If a passenger’s bag is damaged because of rough handling, airlines will pay for the repairs or negotiate a settlement to pay the passenger the depreciated value. • If a passenger’s bag is lost, airlines will reimburse the passenger the depreciated value of his or her lost belongings (up to $3,500 domestic and $1,536 international). • Airlines are required to reimburse you for any fee charged to transport a bag if that bag is lost. OVERBOOKED FLIGHTS: • When a flight is overbooked, airlines are required to ask passengers to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation, before bumping anyone involuntarily. Airlines may offer passengers incentives, such as vouchers, to volunteer. • If there are not enough passengers
who are willing to give up their seats voluntarily, an airline may deny you a seat on an aircraft based on criteria that it establishes, such as the passenger’s check-in time, the fare paid by the passenger, or the passenger’s frequent flyer status. However, the criteria cannot subject a passenger to any unjust or unreasonable prejudice or disadvantage. For example, an airline could not lawfully use a passenger’s race or ethnicity as a criterion. • DOT requires each airline to give all passengers who are bumped involuntarily a written statement describing their rights and explaining how the carrier decides who gets bumped. • Passengers who are denied boarding involuntarily are entitled to compensation that is based on the price of their ticket, the length of time that they are delayed in getting to their destination because of being denied boarding, and whether their flight is a domestic flight or an international flight leaving from the United States. • For a passenger who is involuntarily bumped, if substitute/alternate transportation is provided which arrives 1-2 hours of original arrival time, the passenger is entitled to double the price of the ticket of the one-way fare up to $675. If the delay is more than 2 hours of the original arrival time, or if no
substitute transportation is provided, the compensation is 4 times the ticket price up to $1,350 Airlines are free to offer more money than required to passengers involuntarily denied boarding. COST OF TICKET & FEES: • Airlines are not allowed to increase the price of your ticket after it is purchased. They are also prohibited from increasing the price of a first or second checked or carry-on bag that is not paid for when the ticket is purchased. • Airlines must forward a credit to your credit card company within seven business days after receiving a complete refund application when a refund is due. For purchases made with cash or checks, airlines must provide a refund within 20 business days. DEPRESSION TRIGGERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

epressive disorders don’t take holidays. Stress management can be key to maintaining mental health. It is no secret that the holiday season can be a stressful time. With family gatherings, office parties, gift exchanges, and other demands on our time and attention, the final month of the year can be a trying time for even the most optimistic and enthusiastic people. For individuals who suffer from or are at risk for depression, though,
the impact of holiday stresses and pressures can be much more severe than the momentary frustrations that almost everyone experiences. For example, some of the common triggers for the onset of a depressive episode, such as feeling overwhelmed, experiencing a sense of isolation or deprivation, and having personal conflicts, are also common holiday experiences.
For individuals who are at risk for depression, here are five simple tips that can help keep triggers at bay during the holiday season: 1. Stay Organized Considerable holiday stress is
related to feeling overwhelmed or out of time. Planning ahead can help eliminate or ease some of this pressure. 2. Learn to Say No You do not have to accept every invitation that comes your way. Giving yourself time to relax and decompress during the holidays is more important than yet another party. 3. Set Realistic Expectations There is no such thing as a “perfect holiday,” and trying to create one is an invitation to disappointment. On the other side of the coin, don’t allow dread to destroy your ability to enjoy the season. 4. Take Care of Yourself Sugary and highfat foods, which are staples during the holidays, can drain your energy and increase your risk getting sick. Enjoy a sweet here and there, but do not abandon your healthy diet. Also,
make sure that you are getting some exercise and enough sleep.
5. Get Help When You Need It The holidays are definitely not the time to go it alone. From an extra set of hands in the kitchen to the therapeutic insights of a professional counselor, ask for help when you need it. Please note: These tips can help to reduce the risk of a depressive episode, but they are by no means a substitute for effective professional help. Depression is a serious illness that impacts more than 15 million adults and more than 2.5 million adolescents in the United States. Contrary to a prevalent myth, suicide does not peak during the holiday season. However, depressed individuals are hardly immune from either depressive episodes or suicidal ideation during this time. If you or someone you love is struggling with depression and/ or thinking about suicide, get help now. The National Suicide Hotline, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), is a free resource that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for anyone who is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
GIVE THANKS FOR GOOD HEALTH BY DONATING BLOOD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

he American Red Cross encourages people to share their good health this holiday season by donating blood for patients in need. Mike Healey’s son was born prematurely, weighing three pounds, and immediately needed blood. “I gave blood the next day and have done it 56 times since then,” he said. Though Healey’s son spent his first 49 days of life in the neonatal intensive care unit, he has thrived and is now a healthy, 10-year-old little league baseball player. “I will never forget whoever selflessly gave blood for my son.”
A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and travel. However, patients don’t get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. By giving blood or platelets, donors may give patients more time – and more holidays – with loved ones. I also appreciate the subtle nuances you pick up by rewatching the film again and again. That said, when studying screen writing we had to dissect Casablanca over and over again. I still have an affinity for that flick. It really holds up.

TIPS TO KEEP HOLIDAY BUSINESS PARTIES SAFE AND FUN
T
he holiday party season is here, and the Small Business Legal Center at the National Federation of Independent Business, together with The Cavanagh Law Firm, one Arizona’s leading employment law firms, are advising small-business owners to keep celebrations safe by watching out for problem areas – drunk driving and harassment. DRUNK DRIVING, DRUGS, AND DISTRACTED DRIVING An increasing number of states require employers to exercise reasonable care to prevent injuries by intoxication or impairment of employees leaving holiday parties. To minimize the risk of
liability, an employer could do the following: • Use professional bartenders, and instruct them not to serve anyone who appears intoxicated. • Distribute drink tickets to limit the number of free drinks to two and serve food. • Have an ending time to any company event, even happy hours. • Ask trusted managers and supervisors to be on the look-out for people who have had too much to drink and unable to drive or need assistance getting home. • Consider setting up a corporate account with Uber, Lyft or similar service to take people home. • Pay for cabs to take impaired
employees and guests home or offer designated drivers. • Remind employees that prescription or legal drugs can impair employees’ ability to drive (watch out for edible brownies!) • Texting is still one of the most dangerous activities to engage in when driving. HARASSMENT AND INAPPROPRIATE CONDUCT Socializing, alcohol, drugs, and mistletoe combine to create an environment that can lead to sexual harassment or fighting. Just because it’s a holiday party, doesn’t mean you can’t be liable for what happens as an employer. Employee lawsuits can result from voluntary
events held outside the office and outside normal work hours. • Remind employees about the company’s anti-harassment policies before the party. • If your business does not have an anti-harassment policy, get one! Check out the free sample policy developed by NFIB. Have an attorney review it. • Don’t hang mistletoe. • Ask trusted managers and supervisors to intervene and stop any fighting or inappropriate conduct that witnesses report. • Finally, make sure that all employees understand that a holiday party is a work-related activity, and that rules for appropriate work behavior still apply.

A CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND ILLUMINATION MAKES ITS DEBUT By Dave Ficere
T
he holiday season is all about giving and a new Valley tradition captures that spirit in a unique way. Illumination – billed as America’s largest drive-through light show – made its debut in mid-November, offering Valley residents a brandnew holiday light display with a twist: A portion of all monies received goes to support Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The brainchild of Phoenix businessmen Simon Kreisberger and Ronny Urman, Illumination is a dazzling drive-through display of festive lights synchronized to holiday music and video. Designed for families, this symphony of over one million lights draws oohs and ahhs from young and old alike and runs nightly beginning at 6:00 p.m. through January 14, 2018.
Located on 14 acres of land in North Phoenix, the more than onemile long drive-through display of lights features everything from well-lit arches to holiday trees, snowmen, a large American flag and much more. The holiday event utilizes the latest in world-class technology and computer programming to create an amazing, familyfriendly experience sure to put guests in the holiday spirit. After the approximately 25-minute drive through the light display, young and old alike will enjoy the attraction’s festive Holiday Boulevard, an interactive family area that includes concession stands, glow-in-the-dark novelties, five bouncing castles for the kids and enormous displays. Among the latter: a 30-foot lit sphere tree and – my favorite – the 20-foot walkthru ornament, perfect for a photoopt or selfie. On top of all that, kids can get their pictures taken with Santa while adults learn how to help the nation’s veterans by
visiting the Youth for Troops booth located along the way. “Wonderful,” “Stunning,” “Breathtaking,” were just some of the comments overheard by Illumination visitors on opening night. “We definitely want to come back with the rest of our family,” Angela from Scottsdale said. “This is one of the best holiday lights shows we’ve ever seen,” added Jacob from Peoria. “We will definitely tell our friends about it.” Because the holidays can be expensive, organizers have done all they can to keep the costs affordable. The cost is $29.50++ per car and parking is free and plentiful in the event’s asphalt lot. The cost includes access to the festive Holiday Boulevard. “We know that the holidays can be costly at times, so we wanted to create an opportunity for our community to
rejoice and truly enjoy the holiday spirit without adding additional financial concern,” says Illumination Director of Marketing. Las Noches de las Luminarias One of our favorite holiday traditions every year is visiting the Desert Botanical Garden to see Las Noches de las Luminarias. displayed using a traditional Chinese lantern festival. The Lights of the World promises “an unforgettable exploration of global cultures and cuisine”, and features carnival rides and games, with a daily performance of acrobatics, dance, and music concerts, in addition to the light show. This year’s event in Phoenix is billed as the largest Lantern Festival produced in the world, and it is definitely on our list of festive light celebrations to visit this holiday season. Dates: November 16, 2017 – January 2, 2018 (Closed December 26, 2017) Times: 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. Illumination New this year, the Illumination light display is a must-see for this holiday season. KIWANIS CLUB OF CAREFREE DONATES $92,000 FOR TECHNOLOGY
T
he Cave Creek Unified School District is pleased to announce that the Kiwanis Club of Carefree has donated $92,000 for technology and licenses for students in the district.
each elementary school, 70 to the middle school and 80 to the high school. The next delivery will be a similar rollout until we have reached our 1040 mark for this school year.
The technology is in the form of Chromebooks and licenses that are used for student learning in the classroom. A total of 400 Chromebooks will be distributed district-wide. The Chromebooks will be used in a variety of ways to enhance our shift to Personalized Learning. Students are able to work in smaller groups to access digital content and work at their ability and pace. This frees up the teacher to work with small groups of students to reteach concepts when students need a little extra help. The initial delivery of Chromebooks provided 50 to

But what is going on with home buying and selling? Showings of current listings decrease as people get busier with holiday preparation and activities. However, those out looking at homes during this time of year are usually people who really need to buy something soon so they’re very serious buyers. Q: If I see a for sale sign on a home I’m interested in, do I call the agent listed on the sign or can I call my Realtor? A: Today people see all kinds of homes listed on-
line, while driving neighborhoods or visiting open houses. You’ll have many questions as to how the pricing is for the neighborhood or how to proceed with an offer. If you don’t know a Realtor, talk to the agent who has listed the home. Or ask your friends for a referral to their trusted Realtor. If you have a Realtor you feel comfortable with, ask them about the homes you’ve seen. As licensed Realtors, we can show any home that is listed – not just ones listed by a specific broker company. In fact, most homes are not sold by the agent or broker company marketing the property. So, always call your Realtor of choice with any questions about a property you’ve seen or are interested in.
