The Marvelous Marilyn Maye Dazzles at the Musical Instrument Museum

Photos courtesy of the Musical Instrument Museum

ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, THE MIM MUSIC THEATER AT THE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM (MIM) WILL PLAY HOST TO THE GRAMMY-NOMINATED SENSATION MARILYN MAYE. Attendees are in for a timeless performance from this treasure of the jazz and cabaret worlds, who has headlined Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops and received multiple standing ovations at her MIM appearance last year.

Described by the “New York Times” as “still enterprising and still twinkling at nearly 96, the last of a great generation of American Songbook singers,” Marilyn Maye’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Starting her professional singing career at the tender age of nine, she has since dedicated her life to the art of song and performance. Steve Allen was instrumental in bringing her talent to a national audience, leading to her storied tenure on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” where she appeared an astonishing 76 times. As Carson once noted, “And that, young singers, is the way it's done.”

In a glowing tribute, the “New York Observer” encapsulates her artistry: “She can belt, and she can sing ballads with the kind of warmth that makes your heart smile… She’s the real deal.” And she is. Her accolades include having her recording “Too Late

Now” selected by the Arts Council of the Smithsonian for an album representing the 110 best American compositions of the 20th century.

Her dynamism isn’t bound by the studio recordings; her live performances are magnetic. Will Friedwald from the “Wall Street Journal” observed, “Ms. Maye is the only pop-song diva working today who can satisfy both the Broadway and jazz crowds at once. And she does, with an enviable prowess and energy that belies her age, earning her the title of being 'younger than springtime.”

Her upcoming engagement at the MIM Music Theater is poised to be a culmination of all her experiences and achievements. With each song, Maye makes it her own, her off-the-cuff comments drawing hearty laughter from the audience while her backing musicians complement her without overshadowing her brilliance.

But what makes the December 12 performance even more remarkable is the venue — the Musical Instrument Museum, located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, in Phoenix, stands as a testament to the universality of music. Founded by Bob Ulrich, the former CEO of Target Corporation, MIM showcases instruments played daily by people worldwide, emphasizing that music is, indeed, the language of the soul. With over 7,500 instruments from more than 200 countries, MIM is an immersive journey into the world of music.

Visitors don’t just see instruments; they experience them. State-of-the-art interactive media allows one to hear the sounds and witness the instruments being played in their original cultural context. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, diversity, and the profound sensory nature of music. And the MIM Music Theater has had an array of award-winning talent grace its stage—from Don McLean to Sergio Mendes and Judy Collins to Samara Joy and Diane Reeves. Plus, the theater is getting ready to roll out its “Winter Concert Series” later this month, with over 50 shows featuring Americana, folk, jazz, classical, and world music.

Marilyn Maye’s performance at MIM isn’t just another concert. It’s a melding of two musical forces, both dedicated to celebrating the universal resonance and power of song. As MIM aims to deliver an experience that is “enriching, inspiring, interesting, and fun,” Maye is the perfect embodiment of that mission.

In a world often divided, Marilyn Maye's performance at the MIM Music Theater is a beautiful reminder of the power of music to unite, to inspire, and to remind us of our shared language. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tickets are expected to sell quickly for this event. Those eager to be part of this unforgettable evening should call 480-478-6000 or visit mim.org/concerts

PINNERS CONFERENCE — THE TWODAY EXPERIENCE THAT BRINGS ONLINE INSPIRATION TO LIFE THROUGH 120 CREATIVE, EDUCATIONAL EXPERT-LED CLASSES AND A MASSIVE SHOPPING EXHIBITION WITH 300 VENDOR BOOTHS — RETURNS TO ARIZONA THIS FALL. The event takes place at WestWorld of Scottsdale, located at 16601 N. Pima Rd., on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9.

“We could not be more excited to return to Scottsdale and present the Arizona Pinners Conference to our many supporters,” said Kendall Bennett, who co-founded the event with Roxanne Bennett. “We look forward to seeing familiar faces and new ones, too, as we host our best Pinners yet with incredible vendors, shopping opportunities and so much more!”

In 2015, the Bennetts founded the Pinners Conference in Salt Lake City with the idea to bring the spirit of Pinterest to life. Through these events, guests are encouraged to learn, create and connect through workshops and opportunities that empower them to customize their experience while interacting with other passionate “DIYers,” creators, experts, influencers and retailers.

Bringing Pinterest to life was the initial impetus for this event; however, attendees don’t need to be on Pinterest

to experience everything there is to see, do and take away from the Pinners Conference. There are endless opportunities throughout the course of the two-day experience for attendees to meet with, and learn from, some of the most influential and inspiring women on the internet. Pinners features experts in topics such as DIY, crafts, cooking, self-improvement, photography, party planning, scrapbooking, holiday, beauty and fashion, and much more.

During the event, guests can enhance and improve their skills across a range of niches, take home finished projects and leave with the knowledge to propel their personal advancement in a new capacity. Pinners serves as a place to create lasting memories, build relationships and empower guests to create without limitation.

Pinners Conference continues to bring some of the best brands together under one roof. This year’s event sponsors include Ryobi, Magnolia Design Co., FamilySearch, Makerflo Crafts, Experience Scottsdale and Mulqueen.

General admission tickets are $12 and include entry to the exhibition hall and shopping area. Attendance for kids ages eight and younger is free.

Class passes range from $22 to $39, including admission. Many classes will have optional kits available for purchase as well.

Event hours are Friday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. All ticket options are available online ataz.pinnersconference. com as well as at the door prior to entry. Parking is available in the north parking lot of Westworld for $10.

Small Business Saturday

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY, CELEBRATED ON THE SATURDAY FOLLOWING THANKSGIVING, HAS BECOME A VITAL EVENT TO PROMOTES AND SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES ACROSS THE VALLEY. First started in 2010 by American Express, this grassroots movement has grown into a nationwide campaign encouraging consumers to shop small and recognize the unique contributions that local businesses make to their communities and the economy.

One of the most significant aspects of Small Business Saturday how it fosters community ties. Our small businesses reflect the character and values of the neighborhoods they serve. Typically run by individuals who live in the community, understand its needs, and are often invested in its well-being. By supporting these businesses, consumers not only get unique products and personalized service, but they also help bolster the local economy. According to the American Independent Business Alliance, for every $100 spent at a local business, approximately $68 stays in the community, compared to only $43 when spent at national chains.

Economically, small businesses also play a crucial role in job creation. They account for nearly twothirds of net new jobs created in a community each year. By participating in Small Business Saturday, consumers contribute directly to job stability and growth within their neighborhoods. The event serves as a reminder that when individuals support local businesses, they help sustain livelihoods and foster economic resilience.

Moreover, Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services. Many small businesses offer unique

items that cannot be found in larger retail stores, providing consumers with distinctive shopping experiences. This variety not only enriches the local marketplace but also promotes creativity and innovation. Local artisans, craftspeople, and service providers benefit from the heightened visibility and customer engagement that comes with this dedicated shopping day.

The day also serves as an essential marketing opportunity for small businesses, many of which operate on limited advertising budgets. The collective momentum generated by Small Business Saturday helps to amplify their presence in the market. Social media campaigns, community events, and special promotions draw attention and encourage foot traffic. Many small businesses take this opportunity to build relationships with customers, offering personalized shopping experiences that larger retailers often cannot match.

Furthermore, Small Business Saturday aligns with a broader movement toward conscious consumerism. As shoppers become increasingly aware of the impact of their spending habits, many are prioritizing local over national. The event highlights the importance of making thoughtful purchasing decisions, encouraging consumers to consider where their money goes and its potential impact on their community.

Small Business Saturday is more than just a shopping day; it is a celebration of your community, creativity, and economic resilience. By choosing to shop small, you play a vital role in sustaining local economies and nurturing the unique character of their neighborhoods. This November, make a commitment to support your local businesses—not just on Small Business Saturday, but year-round.

Desert Hills Community School of Music Opens New Recording Studio Lab Kids' Corner

Desert Hills Community School of Music (DHCSM) is excited to invite students to enroll in its new Recording Studio Lab class. Created thanks to a generous grant from the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, Recording Studio Lab (RSL) will train students aged 10 through adult in the fundamental principles of music recording, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will enable them to effectively record and produce their own music. Students do not need any musical training to attend the RSL class, which will be held on the campus of Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, 34605 N. Tom Darlington Rd. in Scottsdale.

Jointly taught by Kevin Weingartner and Shane Vance, the RSL class will also provide students with an opportunity to record others, including individual musicians, small ensembles and larger

concerts. Weingartner, who serves as director of bands at Cactus Shadows High School, holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Audio Production Technologies, works as a freelance DJ and audio specialist, and is so passionate about teaching audio production to middle- and high-school students that he named his dog “Audio.” Vance has many years of recording experience and has independently released two albums from his own studio.

Recording Studio Lab is a hands-on class that will provide students with a strong foundation in recording techniques and the ability to use various recording tools and software. Topics covered may include: introduction to recording, exploring the history and evolution of recording in order to help students better understand today’s equipment and capabilities; digital audio workstations, including how to set up a

recording session and basic editing and mixing techniques; practical recording sessions, where students will learn to set up and record different instruments and vocals, overdub and layer tracks, and apply effects and processing; and other hands-on activities, such as setting up and recording a live band, creating and editing MIDI tracks and mixing a multi-track session.

The goal of building an RSL arose following the popularity of the “Recording Studio” elective at DHCSM’s 2024 summer Band Camp. With funds from the Kiwanis Club’s Major Projects Grant Award, DHCSM was able to purchase the necessary equipment and build a portable recording studio as part of its ongoing mission to expand music education opportunities for students in the North Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek communities.

The Recording Studio Lab classes are held on Thursdays from 3-4:30 p.m. Attendance will be capped at six in the Fall 2024 semester. To register or learn more, visit deserthillsmusic.org/recordingstudio-lab.

Holland Center Presents High School Poetry Jam Featuring “America’s Got Talent” Winner Brandon Leake Kids' Corner

Poets, writers and rappers in grades 9-12 are invited to experience a day of learning, creating and expressing who they are and what is on their minds with “America’s Got Talent” Season 15 winner Brandon Leake at the High School Poetry Jam, taking place November 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Holland Center, 34250 N. 60th Street.

School groups, creative writing classes, literary clubs and solo poet hobbyists from anywhere in Arizona will be able to hear Leake perform spoken word and learn his tips and tricks for making art with words and voice using raw emotion, energy and freedom. No experience is necessary.

“Often times we have stories and emotions that we just need to express and get out,” said Leake. “This is a space to share those thoughts – without judgement – on stage, if you choose, or just in your notebook.”

“Expression through poetry is recognized by health professionals as a valuable healing tool,” added Jennifer Rosvall, The Holland Center Executive Director. “We are humbled and honored that Brandon will be at The Holland Center to not only teach poetry as art, but also help our youth see poetry as a healthy outlet for their thoughts and emotions.”

Tickets are $10 each and include lunch and a swag bag. Space is limited and will fill up fast. To secure a spot, please purchase tickets as soon as possible at hollandcenter.org/event/poetry-jam.

Brandon Leake is an award-winning spoken-word poet, artistic educator and motivational speaker from Stockton, Calif. He is best known for his 2020 America's Got Talent (AGT) win, earning the coveted golden buzzer, and is the competition's first (and only) spoken-word poetry champion. His

creative mixture of art, charisma and passion tailored to his own unique personal narrative has taken him across the world as a speaker and performer.

Leake has performed in locations such as New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and 36 U.S. states for his “Dark Side Tour,” which promotes his first-ever published poetry chapbook and his crown jewel, “Deficients: A Tale From My Dark Side” – an album rooted in transparency and healing.

Brandon is also the founder and CEO of Called to Move (CTM), an artistry organization with the pursuit of aiding youth in self-actualizing and personally developing through the art of poetry. This endeavor has led to Brandon leading workshops around the world with several curricula he has developed himself, and in particular, teaching youth in his hometown of Stockton, CA.

Phenom Taking the Court by Storm Kids' Corner

In a sport traditionally dominated by older players, a new wave of talent is making its mark. At just 10 years old, Desert Ridge resident JZ Holmes is turning heads and smashing expectations, proving that age is just a number when it comes to skill and passion for the game. “I have a lot of friends over the age of 70 now!” JZ shares.

with weekends and mornings before school spent on the court, honing skills, and learning from older, more experienced players.

JZ’s pickleball coach knows it’s rare to see someone so young who is not only talented but deeply committed. “JZ is a joy to work with as he is coachable and determined to improve. Winning and learning is in his eyes,” says John Solema, Head Coach at The Pickleball Space.

Like many people, JZ first encountered pickleball while playing casually at a friend’s house. Intrigued by the fastpaced rallies and easy-to-learn rules, he picked up a paddle and gave it a try. Little did anyone know that this would be the start of something special.

With a background in competitive basketball, JZ’s hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and strategic mindset were far beyond what you’d expect from someone his age. What started as a fun hobby soon turned into a passion,

Between practicing with his Junior Club team Monster Athlete and competing in tournaments on the weekends, JZ has embraced every opportunity to improve his game. This year, he became sponsored by CRUSH, a leading pickleball gear and apparel company and continues to play on two competitive basketball teams. Most recently he and his partner placed 4th at the National Junior Pickleball Tournament and his basketball team won the Jr. Suns Championship at the Footprint Center.

As with any young athlete, finding the balance between school and sports is crucial. Homework gets done ahead of practice, and weekends are carefully structured to allow time for pickleball tournaments and basketball games without compromising schoolwork and a social life.

As the sport continues to grow in popularity, JZ hopes to keep climbing the ranks and one day compete at the professional level. For now, though, he’s focused on enjoying every moment on the court, learning from each game, and proving that even at a young age, anything is possible in pickleball.

Kids' Corner Bubbling Brew

Get ready to mix some magic with this bubbling potion experiment! Using dry ice and a few household items, you can create a frothy, foggy brew that looks straight out of a wizard’s workshop. Perfect for kids who love hands-on science with a magical twist!

WHAT YOU NEED

• A cookie sheet or cake pan

• A tall glass of water

• Dry ice (about 2 pounds)

• Liquid dish soap

• Food coloring

MIXING THE MAGIC

1. Set Up Your Station: Place a tall glass of water in the center of your cookie sheet or cake pan. This will catch any

overflowing bubbles, keeping the mess to a minimum.

2. Add the Dry Ice: Carefully drop a small piece of dry ice into the glass of water. Instantly, you’ll see a foggy mist forming as the dry ice turns into carbon dioxide gas. Note: Avoid touching dry ice directly with your skin! It’s so cold that it can cause burns similar to frostbite, so always use gloves or tongs to handle it safely.

3. Color the Potion: Add a few drops of food coloring to the water.

4. Create the Bubbles: Squeeze some liquid dish soap into the water. In moments, bubbles will form, filling with the foggy gas and overflowing from the glass.

5. Enjoy the Fun: Watch the bubbles grow and spill over the sides, then pop them to release the mist inside!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MAGIC

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, which must be kept below -109.3 degrees Fahrenheit to remain in its solid form—that’s seriously cold! What makes dry ice unique is that it undergoes sublimation, meaning it changes directly from a solid to a gas without turning into liquid first. When you add dry ice to water, it releases carbon dioxide gas, which creates the fog you see. Adding dish soap traps the gas in bubbles, causing them to froth and foam. This fun bubbling effect is a great way to explore concepts like sublimation, density, and gas formation! It's also a bit of Halloween-style fun.

HELPING KIDS WIN AT LIFE

KidStrong’s two new North Valley locations help build strong kids and families.

Local dad Alex Weisman and his wife Marci are passionate about finding fun, fitness-oriented activities for their two young children, ages 10 and 7. When they didn’t find quite what they were looking for, they decided to invest in the popular KidStrong brand and bring fun and fitness to the Valley through KidStrong North Scottsdale, which opened this past spring, and KidStrong Paradise Valley, which opened just last month. The two locations have proven to be a hit with their own children and families across the North Valley.

“The KidStrong brand started nearly 10 years ago in 2015 and now has over 100 locations across the U.S.,” Weisman says. “KidStrong is a science-based program that helps parents build strong, confident, high-character kids. It’s well thought out and more than 50,000 kids go to KidStrong across the country each week. Our Gilbert location of KidStrong has been open for three years and we opened our two here in the North Valley this year.”

As the owner of all three Arizona KidStrong locations and the state’s area developer, Weisman explains that, “Our program focuses on character, physical and brain development through weekly 45-minute, age-based classes.” There are also at-home activities available on an app for KidStrong attendees’ parents and caregivers.

“At KidStrong, we have a three-pillar approach: Physical, Character and Brain,” he explains. “The physical is the exercise, which is always fun and based on scientific research. The character part is about soft skills kids need to learn, including proper social greetings with handshake and eye contact. And, the brain portion is comprised of a lot of brain games, such as learning ASL [American Sign Language].”

The KidStrong signature affirmation is, “I am strong. I am brave. I can do this.” Weisman often hears his own children recite the affirmations to themselves outside of KidStrong classes.

Why should parents and caregivers consider KidStrong? “We reimagine what parenting could be like without the stress and worry that comes with the desire to raise the best humans possible. We have clean, modern centers, world-class coaches and a commitment to helping parents raise awesome kids,” according to the KidStrong company.

“Our 45-minute weekly classes challenge families to live out the monthly KidStrong Superpower with brain boosts, fitness challenges and social skills training. Because our curriculum is action-packed, organized and fun, you won’t want to just drop your kids off and run. KidStrong parents love to hang out at class to see their kid thrive.”

For families who are nervous about the athletic portion of the KidStrong mission, Weisman says that the program is tailored to be welcoming to all kids no matter their athletic abilities.

“KidStrong is an athletic play program, but it’s more than that,” Weisman affirms. “Kids who are natural athletes will have fun but so will kids who aren’t necessarily athletic. It’s about having fun, moving your body, and boosting your brain power and soft skills. We welcome all kids.”

With the two North Valley locations having just opened, Weisman says that the local community has been welcoming.

“The community reception to our North Scottsdale and Paradise Valley locations has been great,” he says. “Both locations are growing really nicely, and we are just trying to get the word out there that we’re here and, for families who are curious, we offer free trials so they can see if it’s a fit.”

When asked what made KidStrong stand out the most, Weisman shares, “KidStrong is a parent-based program; they are just as excited about the program as the kids. We offer a whole child approach to children’s development that has proven successful for thousands of children and their families for nearly a decade. We’re so proud to have brought KidStrong to Arizona.”

Belgravia Group’s Atavia Condominiums Receives Scottsdale Design Review Board Approval

Following the Successful Sellout of Belgravia Group’s Portico, Atavia Brings 88 Luxury Condominiums to Scottsdale’s New ‘Luxury Corridor’

Belgravia Group, Chicago’s award-winning real estate development firm with more than 75 years of luxury projects constructed under its brand, has announced its second North Scottsdale development, Atavia. The project has received Scottsdale Design Review Board (DRB) approval and follows the rapid and successful sell-out of its first North Scottsdale project, Portico.

Atavia will be developed in North Scottsdale’s new “luxury corridor” at Loop 101 and Scottsdale Road. Located adjacent to Portico, Atavia will bring a limited collection of 88 luxury residences to the heart of DMB’s One Scottsdale project.

“The North Scottsdale market continues to be our main focus, and following the tremendous demand we experienced at Portico, having the opportunity to develop another project right next door makes a ton of sense for this growing community,” said Jonathan McCulloch, CEO of Belgravia Group. “Atavia will bring to Scottsdale a completely unique condominium product. The homes at Atavia are designed to blend the breathability of single-family living, such as private entries and attached two-car garages, with the carefree convenience of lock-and-leave condominium ownership.”

Designed by the award-winning international architecture firm KTGY, Atavia redefines modern luxury living in North Scottsdale and features a clubhouse inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Taliesin West. Homeowners will also enjoy a sparkling pool and spa, fully equipped fitness center, private indoor/outdoor yoga studio, outdoor fireplace, lush courtyards and a golf simulator.

Homes at Atavia leave nothing to be desired. Thoughtful design and functionality are married to create a timeless, eminently livable experience. The homes feature 10-foot ceilings, Italian cabinetry, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, private elevators, and expansive rooftop decks of up to 570 square feet that create the perfect backdrop for unforgettable moments.

Atavia’s residences will include floor plans for 2, 3 and 4-bedroom residences priced from the $800’s to $1.7 million.

Portico sold out months ahead of schedule, and broker Cambridge Properties aims to continue this momentum for Atavia.

“We’re continuing to see a strong interest in the

Scottsdale luxury market, and Atavia is the type of development we tend to see sell out quickly, as shown by the success of Portico,” said Keith Mishkin, President and Designated Broker at Cambridge Properties. “On top of high demand for properties of this type, Atavia’s standout features truly make it a product that will move fast.”

Belgravia Group’s sterling reputation and intuitive home designs have collected numerous accolades throughout its tenure, including Portico being named Multifamily Project of the Year in both Phoenix Agent Magazine and the Scottsdale Progress. Belgravia Group will bring its signature, stress-free home buying experience to Atavia with highly livable floor plans, renowned building designs and a vertically-integrated customer purchasing process that allows for a seamless experience from handshake to move-in.

Atavia will begin accepting unit reservations this month.

Considering Selling Your Home? Here are a few words of wisdom!

As we approach the end of 2024, many people begin reflecting on their goals for the coming year. It’s also a time when thoughts turn toward making significant life changes, like selling a home and starting fresh in the new year.

If selling your home is on your mind, here are a few key tips to help you prepare.

GET YOUR HOME READY

When it’s time to sell, we often discuss with sellers the importance of preparing their home for photos, videos, and showings. This includes staging, decluttering, deep cleaning, and even cleaning windows to make the best impression. It’s also a good idea to repair any items you know need attention. An equally important step is preparing yourself both physically and mentally for the move.

Once your home is under contract, you typically have around 30 days to move—a period that can feel overwhelming. During that time, the buyer will likely schedule a home inspection and appraisal. About 20 days before closing, you’ll have a clearer idea of whether the sale is

secure. In those 20 days, you’ll need to make moving arrangements, finalize where you’re going (if you haven’t already), all while managing your regular day-to-day life.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a great time to start purging and packing. Donate what you no longer need, throw out what you can’t use, and pack up items you don’t use daily. Consider renting a storage unit to store packed boxes and declutter your space. The more you can pre-pack, the less stressful those final weeks before the move will be.

An added bonus: a decluttered home not only makes moving easier but also helps your home show better to potential buyers.

CONSIDER PAYING FOR BUYER’S CLOSING COSTS OR FEES TO BUYDOWN THEIR INTEREST RATE

While interest rates have eased in recent weeks, they are still higher than what many buyers can comfortably afford. As a result, more buyers are requesting sellers to contribute funds toward reducing their interest rates. This can sometimes lead to hesitation from sellers, who may feel they’re being asked to cover costs that should fall on the buyer.

However, the most important factor for sellers to focus on is the net amount they will receive from the sale. For instance, if a seller is content with a $1,000,000 sale price, and a buyer offers $1,020,000 while requesting $20,000 to buy down their interest rate, the seller still nets the same amount. Both scenarios result in the same financial outcome for the seller.

The only potential risk arises if the home doesn’t appraise for the higher $1,020,000 amount, which could require renegotiation. However, we’ve seen many cases where offering a credit created a win-win situation for both the buyer and seller.

Similarly, buyers may ask for a contribution toward closing costs. They may need help conserving cash for a larger down payment or for upgrades and repairs after the sale closes. Again, as long as the seller’s net proceeds align with their goals, this can be an effective negotiation strategy.

The key is to always focus on the net amount!

YOUR HOUSE WORTH WHAT A BUYER IS WILLING TO PAY

Realtors are often asked to provide an opinion on a home’s value. When we meet with homeowners, we analyze similar properties currently on the market as well as recently sold homes. By comparing these properties, we can establish a realistic value range for their home.

Many homeowners believe their home is unique and should command a higher price due to its standout features. While this can sometimes be true, it’s crucial to remember that a home’s value is determined by what a buyer is willing to pay—not by the homeowner’s financial expectations.

Additionally, some buyers may have specific needs, and while certain

features in your home were perfect for you, future buyers may need to make changes to fit their lifestyle

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SELL

We’re often asked, ‘When is the best time to sell?’ In Arizona, summer can be challenging due to the extreme heat, which makes home tours and moving less appealing. The ideal time to sell typically falls between September and May, though the market tends to slow down a bit during the holiday season.

In my experience, the peak buying and selling season is from the Super Bowl to Cinco de Mayo. If you’re considering selling, targeting the first quarter of 2025 could be a smart move. During that time, Arizona sees an influx of people, drawn by our fabulous weather and major events like Spring Training and Barrett-Jackson.

That said, buying and selling happen year-round. While many people aim to time the market, the best time to buy or sell is when it aligns with your personal goals and circumstances.

Foothills Caring Corps to Host 13th Annual Golf Classic, Honoring a Legacy of Generosity

Foothills Caring Corps (FCC) invites the community to participate in the 13th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, December 2, at the prestigious Mirabel Private Golf Club in Scottsdale.

The event serves as a day of camaraderie and sport and as FCC’s sole fundraising initiative of the year, providing critical support for services that benefit older adults and individuals with disabilities in the northeast Valley.

This year’s Golf Classic holds special significance as the organization honors the life and legacy of Noah, the founder of Kendrick Wealth Management and a beloved community member who passed away earlier this year. Noah was a devoted supporter of FCC, whose unwavering generosity has made an enduring impact on the lives of many.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Foothills Caring Corps has provided more than 28,600 service touchpoints in the past year, meeting the needs of vulnerable residents with the following programs:

• 19,342 mobile meals delivered

• 3,879 non-emergency medical trips

• 3,530 recreational van trips

• 1,151 mobility equipment loans

“The Golf Classic plays a vital role in keeping our programs running,” said Brent Downs, Executive Director of FCC. “This year, we’ve seen the highest demand for our services in over 24 years, and our goal of raising $110,000 is critical to meeting the increasing needs of our community.”

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Participants can support the Golf Classic in multiple ways:

• Golfers can enjoy a day at the Mirabel Private Golf Club while contributing to a meaningful cause.

• Sponsors can promote their businesses while making a tangible impact on the community.

• Donors who can’t attend the event can still contribute financially to support the programs that matter most.

• Supporters can also help by spreading the word to friends, family, and colleagues.

All contributions from this event will stay within the local community, ensuring older adults and individuals with disabilities receive the assistance they need to live with dignity and independence.

Avoiding the Pain of Probate

Y5010 E. Shea Blvd, Suite 205 Scottsdale, AZ 85254 602.375.6752 | www.libbybanks.com | info@libbybanks.com

ou’ve probably been told by friends or advisors to avoid probate at all costs. Probate is the court proceeding filed in order to appoint an executor – called a personal representative in Arizona – to be able to access a deceased person’s bank accounts and assets and settle their estate. You will likely have to file probate if your deceased loved one has no Will. However, the estate of a person that has only a Will is also very likely to end up in probate court. That’s because a Will doesn’t enable the personal representative named in the Will to act for them. The court still has to formally appoint your personal representative before they can begin to work on settling the estate. The Will is just directions to the court on what you want the court to order as to your estate.

Another reason to avoid probate is that it’s a public proceeding. I can call and for just a few dollars have a copy of your Will by the end of the day. I can go look at the court file and get a list of the people who are included – with their addresses. In many cases, a list of assets must also be filed. Wow. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want people to be able to get information about my affairs that easily!

Another aspect of the public nature of probate are the predators actively

looking at case files and approaching the family. One client recently said they had numerous letters from people wanting to buy her deceased mother’s house, and that one real estate agent actually came knocking on the door when they didn’t respond to his calls.

If privacy is important to you, then you want to avoid probate by using a Revocable Living Trust for your planning. The Trust avoids probate. Your named successor trustee does not have to be appointed by the court. The Trustee is able to access the accounts and property owned in the trust right away. The Trust is private too, there is no need to file anything with the court if it is put together properly.

On your death, your heirs will need to settle your estate, and unless you have the right plan in place, you may be placing a heavy burden on them. The best way to make it less burdensome is to use a Revocable Living Trust for your estate planning. A trust isn’t just for the wealthy. Everyday people who want to make sure their affairs are in order after death can easily do so with a trust.

If you are ready to put a proper estate plan in place – one that avoids probate and makes it easier for someone to manage your assets if you are incapacitated – give our office a call at 602-375-6752, and book an initial consult with me or our other attorney, Allison Gloss.

Why Your Shoulder Hurts At Night (and How to Finally Get Relief)

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

You’ve seen everyone for shoulder pain, and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…

When you’re experiencing shoulder pain all day, it’s no surprise that you would turn to sleep for relief. But when sleeping seated in a chair becomes as bad as lying on your side, it’s time to solve the mystery of your shoulder pain.

Unfortunately, for many on the quest to conquering discomfort, their only option from healthcare providers is to

“wait until it gets worse.” Here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can actually get relief now.

SHOULDER PAIN WHILE SLEEPING

Irene, who had been dealing with shoulder pain for six months, came to us for this exact reason. She didn’t want to resort to temporary cortisone injections, daily sleeping pills, or pain medication. She wanted a long-term solution.

“The worst part was not being able to sleep at night.” Despite three months of physical therapy, her improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also diagnosed her with a rotator cuff injury, but told her she needed to wait for it to get worse to consider surgery.

GETTING RELIEF AND FINALLY SOME SLEEP

Recognizing Irene’s frustration, we swiftly took action, confirming her rotator cuff tear, and identifying a second injury in her shoulder that was contributing to her pain.

We explained to Irene how she had fallen into what we call “The Gap” in conventional medicine, and how regenerative medicine bridges this gap. Irene chose to partner with us and underwent two treatments. In just four weeks, her pain had improved significantly, allowing her to finally get a good night’s sleep.

HOW OUR DEEP DIVE BRIDGES “THE GAP”

Irene’s story is not uncommon; applying a one-size-fits-all approach left her without clear guidance or solutions. You don’t need to wait until it gets worse!

With our comprehensive Deep Dive (which includes our Pain Profile, 32-Point Shoulder Inspection, Precision Shoulder Scan, and Diagnostic Mapping Technique — all of which were used to confirm Irene’s pain and guide her treatment strategy), we’ll not only get YOU an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you!), but will also provide you with a personalized treatment

plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.

If you’ve been wondering, ‘why does my shoulder hurt at night?’ and are eager for answers, call 480-573-6171 to schedule your Deep Dive for a Pain-Free Shoulder with our specialists at Ethos Integrative Medicine, and scan the QR code below to access our FREE report, “Shoulder SOS: The Expert Guide to Decoding Your Pain.”

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

“A

Different Man”

After a surgery that fixes his facial deformity, a man finds a play about his story colliding with his life.

A very funny film about oneself and perception, with Sebastian Stan’s greatest performance to date. Watching his character, Edward, bottle up his insecurities before they leak out, whether it’s in basic conversations or his own quiet parts, is truly great. All the while, Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson’s supporting work show how versatile the two are as they enhance the grounded but odd world it has. From a filmmaking perspective it’s stunning, some great lighting here to add to the mood of the film. That said, the movie does end on a rather strange note, a result of the film perhaps not stopping at the right moment. Still, it doesn’t ruin what was an hour and forty minutes of unnerving and thoughtful humor.

“Saturday

Night”

The chaos surrounding the 90 minutes leading up to the first Saturday Night Live episode.

One of the most self-congratulatory pieces of film in a while, one that can’t bother to actually explore the people behind SNL beyond an easy and consumable level. There’s no examination of how Lorne Michaels sees his cast or the actual impact the show had for its time period, just about how wacky everything is. This is a highly talented cast but most of them don’t get to do much with the material given, just imitations of these people. The only exceptions are Cory Michael Smith, Lamorne Morris and Willem Dafoe who give the film energy. The most insulting thing is how the film builds tension about whether the show will come together - not because we know it will, but because it acts like these future stars may not be. It goes for the easy option.

ON PARAMOUNT+

“Apartment 7A”

A young dancer finds herself at the center of a horrifying conspiracy when she moves into a new apartment.

It’s an enormous task to follow up a classic like Rosemary’s Baby, but that’s still no excuse to deliver such a dull waste of time. Apartment 7A offers nothing new as a prequel or as its own experience, more a retread with less interesting moviemaking and with nothing new to say from 56 years ago. It moves at a snail’s pace, with nothing of interest happening beyond odd antics and the occasional jump scare. The actors do their honest best with the material but are unable to rise above it. There’s little that makes the film even feel like a distinct and new entry from its predecessor. It’s as if it was its own script that was slapped into the universe as a quick cash-grab.

ON APPLE TV+

“Wolfs”

Two lone-wolf fixers find themselves forced into the same job together.

Clooney and Pitt’s long awaited reunion lacks energy and personality for a stereotypical streamer movie. There is no real movement to the film, just events happening for the sake of the plot rather than any real story motivation, and in a world that feels

dead (which is odd for a city like New York). It would be made up for if the main duo were as fun as expected, but the script and direction give neither much to do which results in the two seeming to be bored throughout the film. Ironically, for a movie all about unexpected twists and turns, it’s very predictable in terms of filmmaking and plot. A disposable film, one that will be forgotten about by the time you read this.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.

Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.

One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.

Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love.

Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.

This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:

1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.

2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.

3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work…

5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked

If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica. What to Avoid

Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.

Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.

Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.

Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.

Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.

How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
