City News PVSchools Approves New Principal for Elementary #33 THE GOVERNING BOARD OF THE PARADISE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (PVSCHOOLS) VOTED TO APPOINT CHAD CAUDLE AS THE NEW PRINCIPAL OF ELEMENTARY #33 COMMENCING WITH THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR.
“Mr. Caudle has the experience, vision, and drive to work with the Elementary #33 school community to ensure the successful launch for the 2021-2022 school year,” says Dr. Jesse Welsh, superintendent. Caudle has been the principal at Desert Shadows Elementary School since the 2015-16 school year. Throughout that time, he has worked with his school community to establish a positive and safe environment for students. These efforts solidified the hard work and dedication that teachers, staff, students, and families put into their school and resulted in the following accomplishments and achievements: • Developed the framework for the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program: JAWSOME. • Received the 2017 PBISAz Gold Award. • Implemented a school-wide STEAM program as well as a wide variety of educational opportunities offered to students and families. • Improved the Arizona Department of Education A-F School Letter Grade from a C to an A. • Received the 2019 A+ School of Excellence Award presented by the Arizona Educational Association.
Caudle will begin assuming some initial responsibilities at Elementary #33 during the 2020-21 school year while remaining committed to the success of Desert Shadows Elementary and ensuring a safe and smooth transition back to in-person learning. Caudle earned a bachelor’s of health science degree in physical education from the University of Wyoming and a master’s of administration and supervision degree from the University of Phoenix. He has been an educator for 23 years and was appointed principal in 2007 at Hohokam Elementary School in the Scottsdale Unified School District. After six years at Hohokam, he was the principal of Ingleside Middle School before coming to PVSchools. As a result of population growth, PVSchools has a need for a new elementary school in the Sky Crossing area of North Phoenix. Understanding this need, Cave Butte Development Partners donated 11.49 acres of land in the Sky Crossing Development in order for a new elementary school to be built. Elementary #33 will open in the 2021-22 school year and will be located near Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley Drive. The new school will be the 33rd elementary school in PVSchools 107-year history.

City News The Bourbon Cellar to Host Free Veterans Day Feast, Community is Invited By Michelle Talsma Everson ON VETERANS DAY, NOVEMBER 11, THE BOURBON CELLAR WILL BE HONORING ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES AND FIRST RESPONDERS BY HOSTING A FREE DAY-LONG BUFFET. “Everyone is welcome to come share in this wonderful day of remembering why this country is so great,” says Doug Smith, chef and owner of The Bourbon Cellar. “I know that I’m blessed—I get to do what my passion is each and every day. I want to give back to the community, especially our veterans and first responders, and it is our great customers that allow me to do that.” After the Veterans Day feast, Smith says that the monthly free buffet in honor of “all those who protect our country” will continue on the third Wednesday of every month. On those days, the buffet will open at 4 p.m., and like a family cook out, everyone is welcome. “Before COVID-19, we would do this monthly free buffet dinner and feed anywhere from 80 to 1,200 people depending on the day. I’ve been doing this for about five or six years and, as a Navy veteran myself, I just wanted to find a way I could give back.” The monthly meal is not only a way to give back but to bring the community together. All restaurant staff will be wearing masks and patrons will be required to do so when not eating and drinking. For those who wish to support local veterans, donations will be accepted at the November feast and all of the following ones. Donations are given directly to veterans’ causes and the local legion. “I feel like with everything going on right now it’s great to pause, enjoy a meal, and reflect on how great this country is,” Smith says. “It truly is the land of opportunity; the place where dreams come true. Junk in the Trunk Market, a semiannual shopping experience that is the most popular attraction of its kind in the Southwest, canceled its 2020 Scottsdale markets due to COVID-19. The pop-up event will allow people to shop for the one-ofa-kind items that Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market is known for in a smaller, more intimate setting.

City News Modified Pinners Conference and Expo Comes to West World THE PINNERS CONFERENCE AND EXPO HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO MAKE A SAFE RETURN TO SCOTTSDALE ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13 THROUGH SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14. Held at West World, located at 16601 North Pima Road, the two-day event brings the online inspiration of crafting to life through more than 100 classes taught by the nation’s top experts plus an entire shopping floor featuring nearly 300 local and national brands. “Initially, we were worried about explaining the unique coolness of Pinners, but we’ve been amazed by how quickly everyone picked up on the vision,” says Kendall Bennett, who co-founded the Pinners Conference and Expo with Roxanne Bennett. “People love the classes; they love the shopping; they love the pervasive feeling of sharing that happens at Pinners. Wherever we open a show, people just seem to immediately get it, and more importantly, love it.” In the wake of the pandemic, the co-founders have worked closely with Arizona officials to present an event that’s approved, safe and fun. aisles and more free space; increased facility sanitizing stations and restrooms; and disinfection of each classroom between workshops. Attendees are required to wear a mask during the event. Those that are not feeling well are asked to stay home and those over 65 or at high risk are asked to consider their own health prior to attending. Kendall and Roxanne founded the Pinners Conference and Expo seven years ago in Salt Lake City with the idea to bring the spirit of Pinterest to life by inviting crafty guests to learn, create and connect through a series of workshops and opportunities allowing them to customize their experience while connecting to other passionate crafters, experts, influencers and retailers. Pinners has since expanded nationally with events in California, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas, and Arizona. Community TEDx Scottsdale Women Event Benefits Ryan House on November 20

cottsdale and Phoenix entrepreneurs Jeanna Valenti, Kelly Sallaway and Tina Bakalis announce the organization of a TEDx Scottsdale Women event on November 20. In the spirit of TED’s mission, “ideas worth spreading,” the TEDx program helps communities, organizations and individuals produce TED-style events at the local level. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis, under a license from TED. “We decided to coordinate this event for many reasons,” says Valenti. “We want to inspire, motivate, educate, engage and entertain our audience during a time when the community wants and needs to come together.” The event will be held in two sessions: from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, November 20 at Sneaky Big Studios in Scottsdale. he holidays are just around the corner, and when the family gathers, it can be a great time to talk to the person or persons you have chosen as your executor, personal representative and/ or trustee. IS YOUR EXECUTOR WILLING TO SERVE? If you are just beginning your planning, it is a good time to ask your chosen trustee if they are willing to serve. You don’t want a situation to arise where the people you counted on to serve are saying they won’t. That is one way to end up in an expensive court proceeding. DOES YOUR EXECUTOR UNDERSTAND WHAT’S EXPECTED OF THEM? Next, talk to them about the type of plan you are putting together. Is it a Last Will and Testament with the expectation that they will be filing the Will with the probate court before being able to proceed? Or have you put in place a Revocable Living Trust that will let them avoid court proceedings and quickly
step in to wrap up your estate? Be sure they know what will be expected of them. Another item to mention is your incapacity planning. Many trustees only think about being called to serve when you pass away. Make sure they understand that if you are incapacitated, they may need to step in to manage your finances. If your trustee will also be managing a trust for a beneficiary, perhaps a minor or young adult, talk to them about what you wish for your beneficiaries. How should distributions be handled? Career-driven, student-focused educational opportunities

hroughout 2020, schools and students alike have faced unprecedented challenges. Now, as Arizona starts to revive, students are looking for the education option that best fits their needs. Some schools are offering online learning while others are offering a hybrid learning model. Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC), a local public career and technical education district, has returned to their in-person, hands on learning model, which is necessary for the variety of programs and certifications they offer. With four campuses throughout the North and West Valley and more than 37,000 students from 48 high schools from districts in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, West-MEC offers an assortment of funded programs designed for students that are looking for unique career pathways after high school graduation. West-MEC students can earn a certification and gain employment immediately after high school or apply their experiences and knowledge to their next level 16 • November 2020 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

There are a variety of career programs for students and families in North Phoenix and nearby communities. “Today, more than ever, it’s vital that students understand the application of academics to real-world careers,” says West-MEC Superintendent Greg Donovan. “The United States is, and will be, in need of a highly trained and skilled workforce for the 21st century. We are grateful for the opportunity to develop new and thriving educational centers where students are empowered to participate fully in the economy.” West-MEC’s focus is on the delivery of quality, comprehensive, articulated, industry-validated programs, facilities, equipment and resources that include classroom instruction, laboratory instruction, work-based learning, and a Career and Technical Student Organization. The Northeast Campus features West-MEC’s Automotive Collision Technology, Automotive
Technology, General Construction Technology, Medium/Heavy Diesel Technology, Coding, Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, and Veterinary Sciences programs. Those with specific career aspirations such as Alexia Schuyleman, a senior in the Northeast Campus Veterinary Sciences program, can get a head start on the competition for college after high school graduation. The two-year program she has enrolled in will teach her how to deliver medical care to domestic, exotic and large animals, i.e. cats, dogs, reptiles, and birds. “I’ve wanted to be a veterinarian since I was five-yearsold. Being here and in the profession and having the knowledge is important so when I am working in a clinic, I’ll have that experience to know how I can help right away. to assist a certified veterinary technician and/or veterinarian in surgery, run laboratory tests, obtain animal vitals, and provide daily care and enrichment to the animals up for adoption. This program prepares students to be a vital part of the veterinary team, working together to save animal lives. The Veterinary Sciences program is not the only healthcare related certification a student can obtain at West-MEC’s Northeast Campus, either. Students can participate in the Medical Assisting or Pharmacy Technician programs, as well as other trades such as General Construction Technology or Automotive Collision Technology. Pharmacy Technician program instructor Audrey Stewart said that every graduate of her one-year program is eligible to test and be employed as a pharmacy technician. Should students choose to further their education at a university or pursue additional healthcare-related careers, they will already have an advantage. “Anyone my age when I describe what I do says, ‘I wish they had that when I was in high school,’ and the amazing part is that the students all have an inkling in what they want to do. I don’t expect them to all come in to be pharmacy technicians for life or to become pharmacists, but they have an interest in healthcare. So, I try to keep it broad so they can have success in whatever they choose to do in the end,” Stewart says. “The best part is that it gives them flexibility with full-time options with benefits, or part-time while pursuing other options such as college or other education.” West-MEC’s Northwest campus offers many of the same programs as its sister locations, but a unique aspect of the Northwest Campus is the Biomedical Science program. “This comprehensive and accelerated program invited students to participate in the vast field of biomedical science including work in forensics, anthropology, biomedical engineering, and more,” says instructor Tye Helm.

Helm adds, “West-MEC’s Biomedical Science program bridges the gap between academics and industry by instilling vital biomedical skills and techniques, core knowledge, and professional softskills for students to enter the laboratory technology field prepared. The Project SEARCH students are fully engaged in both classroom and on-the-job learning experiences through worksite rotations, giving them not only knowledge but also confidence to succeed in their future workplaces. “The steps you see the students take are amazing,” says Job Coach Lyntasha Barrett, whose own daughter went through the program several years ago. “They’re nervous and a bit stressed out at first, but then they blossom into confident and happy adults. And, when they go on to get a job and do well in their careers, it’s a wonderful sight to see.”

The two-year Medical Assisting Program prepares students with the necessary clinical and administrative knowledge to become entry-level medical assistants. Students will receive handson training and learn how to properly administer injections, take vital signs, record EKGs, implement basic accounting procedures, and understand the fundamentals of patient documentation.
West-MEC does not limit its instruction to traditional high school students, either. The district offers a variety of adult education courses to those wishing to make a career change or become certified for indemand job opportunities. In addition, West-MEC also boasts its Project SEARCH Program. Project SEARCH is an international program that helps empower young adults with disabilities to help them make a successful transition from school into a professional career. Participants are taught relevant, marketable skills while immersed in the working world. Student
West-MEC is a public school district and receives its funding from the state of Arizona. About 68 percent of its funding comes from the state and the remaining 32 percent comes from the CTED (Career and Technical Education District) voter-approved measure. The majority of West-MEC’s instructional budget is designated to 12 Member School Districts that teach satellite programs. This funding helps support CTE programs, Career and Technical Student Organizations training, student grants, and professional development for teachers. The remainder of the funding goes toward West-MEC operated programs. Applications for all of West-MEC’s CTE programs went online in early October for the next academic year. Caring for A Loved One with Dementia? Hospice of the Valley Provides Free Support By Lin Sue Cooney
F
amily caregivers often feel overwhelmed, anxious and isolated while they are caring for a person with dementia. They want to keep their loved one at home for as long as possible but wonder how to make it all work. Thanks to a federal grant, Hospice of the Valley can now help these families at no charge. The Administration for Community Living has awarded funds to 12 agencies nationwide to help families living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. The three-year grant allows Hospice of the Valley to significantly expand its dementia support program, which provides home visits to help caregivers with education, emotional support, behavior management strategies, medications, respite, placement options and living wills. Families also have 24/7 phone support with a Hospice of the Valley nurse, social worker or medical director Dr. Gillian Hamilton. “We are absolutely thrilled to be able to help more families who so desperately need this support,” Hamilton says. “Dementia is a vulnerable and challenging journey and no one should travel it alone.” This program serves those at any stage and with any type of dementia, and — equally important — their family caregivers. “I don’t know what I would do without this kind of
support,” confides Christiane Cole, who is caring for her husband Muryl. “I have a whole team of people helping me understand what to do as my husband’s dementia progresses. Offering assisted living, an inpatient unit, intergenerational adult and childcare centers and an education center, this unique facility will serve as a community resource for families struggling to cope with the challenges of dementia. “Our goal is to help those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their caregivers live at home with high quality of life,” says Executive Director Debbie Shumway. “This campus and this grant will help so many families achieve that with confidence and peace of mind.” The grant also allows Hospice of the Valley to deepen collaborations with a number of local organizations to create programs with a special focus on people with dementia living alone; those with distressed behaviors; and those with developmental disabilities like Down syndrome, who may develop Alzheimer’s at an early age. Health HonorHealth Enrolls First Patient in the Southwest for Phase 3 Clinical Trial of Novel Drug to Battle COVID-19
H
onorHealth Research Institute has begun enrolling participants in a clinical trial at three hospitals within the HonorHealth system in Phoenix and Scottsdale to study an investigational drug to treat patients with COVID-19. The randomized controlled Phase 3 trial compares the safety and efficacy of two different doses of the drug ruxolitinib to placebo in participants with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who are on a ventilator. In a recently published article, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that of the patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized, 14.2% were treated in the intensive care unit and of those patients, 85.9% received mechanical ventilation.
“For our sickest patients with COVID-19 infection, those in intensive care on ventilators, we are sorely in need of new options, this study could potentially reduce the duration of time that patients are intubated on ventilators,” stated Michael S. Gordon, MD, principal investigator of the study.
(CRS), or “cytokine storm,” an uncontrolled and overwhelming release of pro-inflammatory proteins throughout the body.
Researchers throughout the country expect to enroll approximately 500 participants with confirmed COVID-19 infection that must have been confirmed two weeks prior to randomization. Participants must also be intubated and receiving mechanical ventilation at the time of randomization, among other criteria.
Ruxolitinib is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of adult patients with intermediate or high-risk myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera after resistance or intolerance to hydroxyurea, and steroid refractory acute graft versus host disease. Ruxolitinib is not approved for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 ARDS who are on a ventilator, but positive clinical trial results could lead to a pathway for FDA approval for this use.
Prior studies have shown that many patients with severe respiratory disease due to COVID-19 have features consistent with cytokine release syndrome

020 has proven to be a challenging year in many ways, not the least of which has been a less than hospitable financial environment. Events ranging from a significant bear market in stocks earlier in the year to a dramatic increase in job layoffs have put many Americans in difficult financial positions. If you find yourself in these circumstances, you may be wondering what it will take to get back on track. A recent study by Ameriprise Financial shows that with or without a pandemic, financial setbacks are more common than you might think. More than three-quarters of those surveyed experienced at least one major financial setback in their lives and this does not include events since COVID-19 emerged.1 According to the study, more than half of respondents faced setbacks costing them at least $50,000, and for one-third of respondents the losses exceeded $100,000. The impact was experienced across a wide range of households regardless of age or income level. But persistence paid off – a full 90 percent of respondents who experienced a serious setback say they have recovered from it. What can we learn from their experiences? Here are three key takeaways: #1 BE READY FOR ANYTHING Financial setbacks can occur for a variety of reasons. Based on survey results, those range from investment market declines to earnings that did not meet expectations, to a job loss. Other events that created negative financial consequences include making a bad financial decision, having to provide support to family members, and divorce or illness. In short, there are any number of obstacles that could put a wrench in your financial plans. Having a contingency plan in place to respond to these types of emergencies can help you weather the immediate financial stress.

For half of survey respondents, that included finding ways to cut back on spending. Tied to that, some (37%) say they changed their practices around saving money. A quarter of respondents decided that adding work hours or delaying retirement was a necessary step. Others found that having emergency reserve funds in place helped deal with their sudden financial shortfall. #3 YOU MAY BE BETTER PREPARED AS A RESULT Despite the stress of suddenly facing a financial struggle, there may be a bright side. More than half of survey respondents said they ultimately felt stronger as a result of the experience. And almost all (97%) say they have focused on improving their ability to withstand a repeat event. They decided to boost their emergency savings, many accumulating more than $50,000 in cash reserves, or enough to fill a six-month income gap should they face another setback in the future. GETTING BACK ON TRACK Whether the economic fallout from COVID-19 or some other factor has resulted in a financial setback for you this year, remember that you are not alone. Take the matter seriously but keep a level head. You’ll want to closely examine your financial situation to determine the most appropriate steps to take to get your recovery underway. re you thinking about buying or selling? Your first step is to hire a Realtor. With so many Realtors to choose from, how do you select the best one for you? Here are some suggestions on how to determine who will be the best fit for your needs.
QUESTIONS BUYERS AND SELLERS SHOULD ASK: • Is the Realtor full-time or parttime? This is critical! Is this their career or something they do on the side? If it’s their career, they are more likely to be available when you need them and be available to negotiate and manage the process through to closing. If they are parttime, this may not be a priority for them or they may not be available when you or the other parties in the transaction need them. • Are they experienced? We all know that with anything you do in life, the more experience you have, the more you know and the better you perform. Practice makes perfect is a saying for a reason. Without the appropriate experience, you may find yourself paying more or missing out on opportunities because the Realtor is not savvy enough to know how to maneuver through situations. • Do they have a team or are they solo? There is no right or wrong answer here, but it’s critical to know that if your Realtor is sick, on vacation or on another appointment, will someone be available to assist you? In other words, do they have enough coverage to ensure your needs are met? • Are they familiar with the area? Will he or she know how to evaluate the comps in the area, including the nuances to neighborhoods and builders? • How much of their business is representing buyers vs. sellers? • Do they have a website and social media presence? • Do they have repeat clients and examples to share? • Do they have references you can call? • What makes them unique? • What was their most difficult purchase/sale? • What was their proudest purchase/ sale?
• Have they won any awards or recognition? • Do they provide any educational materials? QUESTIONS SELLERS SHOULD ASK: • What is their average amount of days on the market? • What is their ratio of list price to sale price? • Do they use professional stagers, photographers, and videographers? • Can they provide samples of previous listings? Ask them to email the listings to you so you may review their descriptions, photos, videos, etc. • Do they have any unique marketing avenues? • What is your home worth and what is their pricing philosophy? QUESTIONS BUYERS SHOULD ASK: • Have they won bidding wars? If yes, ask them to describe examples. • How do they work to find a home for a buyer? • What should a buyer do to be prepared to write an offer? • What is their best advice for the next steps in the buying process? There are of course many more questions to consider, which may depend on your unique buying and/or selling situation and needs, but these are a good start. When interviewing a Realtor, you’ll not only want to verify that you are partnering with someone qualified, experienced and savvy, but you also want to ensure that you are working with someone you trust and with whom you will enjoy a working relationship. Do they have the right energy and disposition for you to feel comfortable and confident? Realtors and their clients spend a lot of time talking on the phone, so it will be important that you partner with someone you will look forward to spending time with and you’ll be excited to see their name pop-up on your phone with an incoming call. hanksgiving and the holidays are a time when many families travel long distances to celebrate together. Travel increases the chance of getting and spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others. If you must travel, be informed of the risks involved. The information below is only a part of the CDC’s recommendations. To see the full list, visit cdc.gov/coronavirus. LOWER RISK ACTIVITIES • Having a small dinner with only people who live in your household. • Preparing traditional family recipes for family and neighbors, especially those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and delivering them in a way that doesn’t involve contact with others. • Having a virtual dinner and sharing recipes with friends and family. • Shopping online rather than in person on the day after Thanksgiving or the next Monday. • Watching sports events, parades, and movies from home. MODERATE RISK ACTIVITIES • Having a small outdoor dinner with family and friends who live in your community. • Visiting pumpkin patches where people use hand sanitizer before touching pumpkins or picking apples, wearing masks is encouraged or enforced, and people are able to maintain social distancing. • Attending a small outdoor sports events with safety precautions in place. HIGHER RISK ACTIVITIES Avoid these higher risk activities to help prevent
the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19: • Going shopping in crowded stores just before, on, or after Thanksgiving and other holidays. • Participating or being a spectator at a crowded race. • Attending crowded parades. • Using alcohol or drugs, which can cloud judgment and increase risky behaviors. • Attending large indoor gatherings with people from outside of your household. DURING THE CELEBRATION Follow these tips to reduce your risk of being exposed to, getting, or spreading COVID-19 during the celebration: • Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet or more from people you don’t live with. Avoid using restroom facilities at high traffic times, such as at the end of a public event. • Minimize gestures that promote close contact. • Wear a mask at all times when around people who don’t live in your household to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. • Avoid singing, chanting, or shouting, especially when not wearing a mask and within 6 feet of others. • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces and any shared items between use when feasible. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. • Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that handling food or eating is associated with directly spreading COVID-19. It is possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object, including food, food packaging, or utensils that have the virus on it and then touching their own

You must also choose the best spot for all your appliances. Many enthusiasts choose to have it flow with the indoor kitchen. On either side of that window, you can see something cooking. The decision may come down to the current location of your sources for water and power. SEPARATE THE ZONES Every professional kitchen is divided into zones. These distinct areas are reserved for specific activities, and appliances are installed accordingly. Restaurants do this for the convenience of chefs. Even if you want an outdoor kitchen for your own reasons, using this principle for the layout can come in handy.
PRE-MADE OR CUSTOM? Speaking of layouts, there are two choices for purchasing backyard food preparation equipment. You could order complete BBQ islands and all-in-one outdoor kitchen sets. These bundles contain multiple appliances and structures for a single price. They may also come with a specific layout. Options may include linear designs, L-shaped layouts, and more. INSTALL PROPER VENTILATION Your cooking equipment will produce smoke, gas, and smells when you use it. If they build up without any release, they could damage the appliances.
