EAT THE FROG FITNESS TO OPEN AT DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE JANUARY 2020 DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE WILL WELCOME EAT THE FROG FITNESS (ETF FITNESS) IN JANUARY 2020. The studio will be located on the southwest side of the shopping center near Chipotle. Keeping in mind society’s propensity for putting off fitness, Eat the Frog’s unique name comes from an age-old Mark Twain quote, “Eat a live frog first thing every morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Cofounder and Olympic Decathlon gold and silver Medalist Bryan Clay

used this mindset to become an Olympic champion and create ETF Fitness.

ETF Fitness blends proprietary training methods with an evidence-based business model to create a fitness approach to be inclusive of everybody and every body. Small class sizes and coach-led sessions help ETF eliminate gym-intimidation, encourage social interaction and integrate adaptive technology. The regimen starts with a 30-minute fitness assessment of each new client. Fitness needs are customized for an 8-week training guide based on each person’s heart rate training zone. Classes are specifically designed with a mix of cardio, strength, flexibility, core and recovery to benefit everyone from the first timer to the professional athlete. “With 24-hour class schedules and the ability to experience live or virtual led classes, ETF Fitness is the perfect addition to the Desert Ridge community,” said Jenny Cushing, vice president of leasing at Vestar.

They are the latest tenant to join Desert Ridge Marketplace’s lineup of wellness options, which include Lagree Fitness studio The Body Lab, recently opened BackFit Health & Spine, and coming soon, top-rated med spa, Derma Health Skin & Laser.

“ETF Fitness will provide the Desert Ridge Community a unique fitness program that combines Olympic inspired training, cutting edge technology and the science of your body to create the most advanced workout,” said Bryan Clay, cofounder. To celebrate the upcoming opening, the new ETF location is offering founders rates for new members, locking in the lowest rate for life. You can find them onsite now to lock in that low rate and ask any questions you might have about this new facility. To learn more about how Desert Ridge Marketplace continues to evolve, visit shopdesertridge.com or visit the center at 21001 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix. Arizona dropped from 4.9 percent last year to 4.5 percent last month. The Phoenix area workforce increased by 51,200 jobs from last year, a gain of 2.4 percent, compared to the U.S. job gain of 1.6 percent in September 2019 over September 2018. September marked the 37th consecutive month of manufacturing job gains. Transportation and warehousing increased new hires by 7,900, a 9.8 percent year-over-year increase. Restaurants and bars added 2,700 new jobs in September, traditionally a month of declining hiring before the prime season boost.

LOCAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM HONORS FALLEN VETERANS PLEASE JOIN THE PARADISE VALLEY NATIONAL SOCIETY DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA REVOLUTION (PVNSDAR) AND HELP SPONSOR THE WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM. The PVNSDAR chapter has sponsored veteran memory wreaths for the Wreaths Across America Program for several years and is a fundraising and sponsoring group for it. The event is a wonderful way to remember our fallen Veterans, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom. In 2007, the Worchester family of Harrington, Maine along with veterans and others who had helped with their annual Christmas Wreath ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, formed Wreaths Across America. The goal was to continue and expand this effort and

support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. In 2018, Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers laid over 1,800,000 memorial wreaths at nearly 1,440 locations in the United States and beyond. This was accomplished with help from over 3,270 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, donations of trucking and shipping plus thousands of helping hands. The annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as “the world`s largest veteran`s parade,” stopping at schools, monuments, veterans’ homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to Remember, Honor and Teach!

IN DA CLUB(HOUSE) CLUBHOUSE AT MAYA DEBUTS IN SCOTTSDALE By Alison Bailin Batz

IMAGINE THE WORLD’S GREATEST BACKYARD PARTY, AND THEN COMBINE IT WITH CONCESSIONS, BEER-INFUSED COCKTAILS, FOOTBALL GAMES AND THEME PARTIES. Now, imagine it 10 times bigger and better that. And now, you are approaching the OMG-factor of Clubhouse at Maya. Now open in the heart of the Entertainment District in Old Town Scottsdale, the 14,000-square-foot, dog-friendly party palace for the ages is a complete re-imagining of the Maya Day + Nightclub. “For both those who have and haven’t been to Maya in the summer, we have a massive, Las Vegas-style party pool, cabanas and entertainment pavilion that must be seen to be believed.

That’s Maya Day Club,” says Jason Adler, director of operations for Spellbound Entertainment, parent company for Maya. “But, once the temperatures begin to dip each year, the Valley’s best pool party needed a facelift; one focused on what folks like best during the fall and winter months.”

The re-imagining begins with the covering of the pool – no easy feat! – and the transition of each cabana into an interactive game or entertainment experience. “In place of the pool, we’ve built a treehouse-themed bar, which specializes in shareable cocktails, beer cocktails and food meant to be enjoyed with friends,” says Adler. But that is only the beginning. Cozy furniture with a nod to Americana and definitely placed with comfort and relaxation in mind are abound throughout the space. Adler and his team also brought in over two dozen flat screen televisions and placed them through-

out Clubhouse to ensure all fall sports – especially college and professional football – could be enjoyed by guests at all times. Beyond the flat screens and football-themed activities and specials, there is pop art on nearly every single wall, all begging to be the background of a selfie or photo opportunity with friends. Those having a date night will be impressed as well. “The Lego wall is an early favorite,” laughs Adler, referring to an entire wall that has been covered in a Lego art piece that must be over 20 feet tall. “Oh, and the Cher homage is pretty popular, too.” The Cher homage to which Adler is referring is located in one of the former cabanas – and it has more than just Cher. “The ceiling in that ‘experience room’ is covered in disco balls, and yes, Cher imagery throughout, but it also has Skee-Ball, darts and other games as well,” says Adler.

The comic strip room, according to Adler, features floor-to-ceiling comics one might see in a newspaper as well as foosball, air hockey and more.

There are also giant-sized Jenga games on picnic tables throughout the venue, and several corn hole – some call it bags – games set up for guests to enjoy, as well as shuffleboard, ping pong, giant Connect Four and more. For those looking for something wholly different than most other spots, they also boast a giant-sized version of beer pong where guests throw a volleyball into almost human-sized containers shaped like red Solo Cups. Finally, there is also a concession area in addition to the traditional menu with cotton candy, popcorn, waffle sticks, hot dogs and street tacos. Clubhouse at Maya is open seven days a week and offers brunch on weekends. For more, visit www.mayaclubaz.com.

With ease of booking and direct flights out of Scottdale to vacation locales such as Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas — and seasonal flights to Aspen, Colorado and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico — Set Jet utilizes the safety-proven Bombardier Challenger 850/CRJ 200 luxury aircraft with 13- to 15-seat ultra-VIP cabin configurations for the ultimate in luxury travel. “There are many organizations that have tried, in their own way, to provide what Set Jet provides. But Set Jet has truly cracked the code and we are excited to provide an unparalleled, five-star aviation experience to all of our members,” says Set Jet CEO Tom

Smith. “We are changing the way people will travel forever.” Set Jet serves to bridge the gap between flying private and flying commercial, makes the experience of owning and flying one’s own private jet available to the masses, and offers jet owners a more economical option. This club is limited to just a few thousand members and offers the most exclusive amenities. Set Jet’s unique and proprietary business model allows its members who are early planners to schedule or “book” flights and have the opportunity to select their chosen time of departure and destination city. Then all other like-minded members who wish to travel to the same destination can join the flight or “buy a seat” up to thirty minutes prior to departure. Set Jet utilizes private and non-congested VIP terminals so members can avoid the inconveniences of commercial air travel such as advance notice for booking

flights, premiums for last-minute travel, security delays, check-in requirements, and parking expenses. Set Jet has also partnered with five-star restaurants, resorts, luxury brands and other service providers such as rental car companies and car manufacturers that provide ancillary benefits to its members. Initially launched in Scottsdale in 2012, the Set Jet concept then expanded into other markets including Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and Las Vegas. Due to support and demand from the local market, the company

is once again taking memberships in Scottsdale and has recently completed its headquarters, private VIP terminal and member lounge at the Scottsdale Airport. Set Jet is scheduled to commence flight service in Scottsdale this December — just in time for holiday travel. Membership is limited and costs $99.95 per month, with a onetime $99.95 security check fee. Guest members may pay the $99.95 rate for a single month, plus the $99.95 security check fee. Flights cost between $400 and $470 one-way, including taxes and fees. For more, visit www.setjet.com.

GIVING BACK: THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING KIDS HOW TO BE THANKFUL AND GENEROUS

T

his time of the year, we stop to reflect on all the things that make us thankful. A roof over our head when so many are homeless, food in our stomachs when so many go hungry, and the love of friends and family when so many are alone. As parents, it’s so important to pass on our values to our children, and help them understand why we should be thankful for what we have, even when life has difficulties. There are many ways to encourage your kids to be thankful, but one of the best ways to show them why is by giving back to others who are in need. Here are some ways that you and your family can embrace the spirit of giving thanks and give back to people who are less fortunate than you.

You’re You’re always always set set for for aa sitter. sitter. (No really, we mean it.) (No really, always we mean it.) You’re set for a sitter.

DONATIONS AND GIVING It’s important for kids to feel like they are helping when you talk about giving back and being thankful. One way they can help is by donating old books, toys and clothes, and by helping you give items to people less fortunate than you. Let your kids help you pick out the items to donate and pack them up, then take them with you to drop off the donated items.

Here are a few organizations that collect special holiday donations in the Valley: • Salvation Army Christmas Angels • Toys for Tots • Food Banks and collection boxes at grocery stores VOLUNTEERING You can set an example of generosity for your kids by taking time to

volunteer with organizations that help others. Donating your time is a great way to actively demonstrate how it feels to help people in need, and will let kids gain a sense of pride that they are helping out. Here are a few suggestions for places to volunteer your time: • Local Food Banks • Nearby nursing homes and retirement communities • Community clean-up activities • Homeless shelters • Local churches

PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS Another great way to get kids involved is to participate in charitable events and fundraisers as a family. Non-profit organizations hold walks, fundraisers, and events to raise money

for charities all year long. There are really too many events to list here, but you can easily search by organization, date, or cause to find the activities that will work best for your family. Consider cause, distance, cost or fundraising requirements, time of day, and the day of the week when you do your research. There are endless ways to give back and tons of places in the Valley of the Sun that need your help. Do your homework, get your kids involved, and make it a point to give back and be thankful this year. We at Ladybug’s Blog (www. LadybugsBlog.com) are sincerely thankful for you, our readers, and for the opportunity to share information and tips for doing great activities with your kids all year round here in the great state of Arizona!

LOCAL AMERIPRISE FINANCIAL ADVISORS HOST ANNUAL DIGNITY DRIVE TO HELP

preparing for job interviews. The drive ended with a tea event where attendees learned more about the missions of these organizations and met other civicminded professionals. It was an uplifting experience for all involved, resulting in nearly 600 bras and counting as word gets out about the need.

Private wealth advisor Renee Hanson is a founding member of the Women in Service and Hope committee supporting the missions of St. Vincent de Paul. She is also a regular contributor at both Fresh Start Women’s Foundation and Sojourner Center. When planning the practice’s community outreach activities for 2019 she uncovered a need that is often overlooked by donors – women’s undergarments. A plan was put in place to host a donation drive and event to gather at least 500 new and gently-used bras to help clothe women

Plans are underway to host the event on an annual basis every October which happens to be breast cancer awareness month. Next year’s lofty goal is 1,000! It truly is a community-wide effort and could not have happened without the support of the sponsors who donated gifts for prizes, the donors (including the women of WISH,) family, friends, and colleagues. CCUSD WELCOMES 14 INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS & INTERNS

C

ave Creek Unified School District Governing Board members met 14 new international teachers and interns that teach Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese to preschool through 12th grade students. The recently arrived teachers introduced themselves, shared where they were from and their reflection on American students. Ms. Liffick, a teacher originally from China, said “My fourth graders at Horseshoe Trails Elementary School just amaze me every single day.” She teaches math and science in Chinese as well as Chinese language arts, as part of the Chinese immersion program. The three interns from France shared their initial experiences as they start their one year stay at Desert Sun Academy supporting the French immersion program and promoting French language and culture school wide. While international teachers come through different pathways that authorize working in the USA, interns come through the Embassy of France and Spain as competitive

awards given to exemplary schools.

As leaders in world language programming, CCUSD knows that leaving 12th grade with a bilingual/biliterate skillset will open doors for its students regardless of whether they work locally or on the global stage. A recent study

of 1,200 U.S. based employers confirmed this by noting that “56 percent of U.S. employers state that the need for bilingual workers in their field will increase” (leadwithlanguages.org/ report). CCUSD Director of World Languages, Cristina Ladas, appreciates that “international teachers bring a little

piece of their world to Cave Creek so that our students are better prepared for the future.” Please contact CCUSD Director of World Languages, Cristina Ladas, for more information 480-575-2019 or cladas@ccusd93.net.

ARIZONA LAW GIVES VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE A NEW HOPE By Robert E. Pastor t can take decades for survivors of child sexual abuse to share their secret and break the silence. Arizona law now recognizes that victims of sexual abuse need time to process and understand what happened to them.

conclusively shows people with a history of childhood sexual abuse have an increased risk of major depression, suicide attempt, alcohol or drug dependence, social anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, rape after the age of 18 and divorce throughout their lives.

Adults who have suffered child sexual abuse may experience a variety of symptoms throughout their lives or in chronic episodes. Survivors of sexual abuse often suffer deep seeded shame, guilt and self-blame that often leads to depression and anxiety. Survivors of abuse may develop a belief that they caused the sexual abuse or that they deserved the abuse. No child causes or deserves to be sexually abused. These beliefs may lead to self-destructing or sabotaging relationships. As children and as adults, survivors of sexual abuse may experience intrusive or recurring thoughts, nightmares or even flashbacks about the abuse. Research

Elliot Nelson et al., Association Between Self-Reported Childhood Sexual Abuse and Adverse Psychosocial Outcomes: Results from a Twin Study, 59 Archives of General Psychiatry, 139, 139-145 (2002). Studies also show child sexual abuse can lead to sexual dysfunctions, sexual compulsion, confusion and struggles over gender and sexual identity, homophobia, problems with intimacy, guilt, self-blame, low self-esteem, negative self-images, and increased anger. The complexities surrounding child sexual abuse and the trauma that victims endure is just one reason why Arizona changed the statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse. A statute of limitations is like a legal stopwatch that counts down the time to file criminal charges or a civil lawsuit. There are often different statutes of limitations for different types of cases. It is important to know when the clock starts ticking, when the clock stops ticking and whether anything restarts the clock. The new law in Arizona gives victims of child sexual abuse more time to take legal action and for some victims, it restarts the clock - but for a limited time. The new law now gives victims until age 30 to file civil suits; an additional 12 years. The new law also restarts the statute of limitations clock for victims of

child sexual abuse. Under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse have until December 31, 2020. It does not matter how long it has been or how old a victim is, under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse can take back their voice and seek the justice they deserve. By taking action against perpetrators and the institutions that covered for them, victims can expose perpetrators and expose the cover up. Civil actions will also protect other children because these institutions now know that they are not above the law. Robert E. Pastor is an attorney with the law firm of Montoya, Lucero & Pastor, PA. Mr. Pastor has been representing and advocating for victims of child sexual abuse and sexual assault for more than sixteen years. He understands the needs of survivors of sexual abuse and the importance of exposing the truth for his clients and for the safety of all our children.

COVER STORY

everything beautiful ARTWALK

BUILDING AN ART COMMUNITY IN NORTH PHOENIX By Molly Cerreta Smith

A

t this time last year, the first Everything Beautiful Artwalk was held as way to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Cast Salon and Spa, located at 5355 E. High Street in North Phoenix. But it was also the beginning of a movement to formulate a strong and supportive arts community in the area… which is a beautiful thing. Friends Jamie Almarez, owner of Cast Salon which offers an extensive array of full hair services as well as lash extensions, facials, dermaplane, facial peels, micro-needling, brow tinting and waxing and much more, and Linda Del Toro have long been passionate about the arts and supporting local artists. The initial Everything Beautiful Artwalk was the culmination of that through the vision of celebrating the salon. However, the show was such a success that the friends decided to keep it going — for both the artists and the community. Barbi Niblick — a local abstract artist working in acrylics and oils whose work has recently been accepted into On the Edge Gallery in the Scottsdale Arts District in Old Town — began painting seven years ago as a method of self-exploration using YouTube as her guide. “When I needed something more tangible, I engaged in the study of art with a local artist and sculptor who was instrumental in helping me take my work to a whole new level,” she explains.

Niblick has been with the Everything Beautiful Artwalk since the first show last November. “I started with Everything Beautiful as an artist displaying my work, and this season I have offered to assist in the recruiting of artists and marketing on social media for the event. I’m very excited to be part of such an important initiative,” Niblick says. “I’m passionate about helping to boost fellow artists and see them succeed, and I believe strongly in the mission to bring the arts and community together in North Phoenix.” As the concept for the Everything Beautiful Artwalk was starting to develop, Almarez and Del Toro hosted additional shows in February, April and May of this year, and each quickly grew to include more artists, more space and more entertainment. The November 2018 show had just a few artists set up on the sidewalk — and the most recent show this past October included 16 artists. The event now takes over an entire side street that is closed off to cars, so that people can peruse the event and then easily access High Street for shopping, dining, entertainment and more. Niblick admits that the shows are “a lot of work,” especially considering each undertaking is in addition to each of the women’s full-time jobs. However, it’s truly a labor of love and a concerted effort to help the art community grow in this pocket

of the valley. “Each show is born out of Jamie and Linda’s dream to connect local artists with the local community,” Niblick says. “It’s about creating an inviting environment where people want to come and hang out.” Aside from the fact that Cast Salon, the impetus for the first show, is located at High Street, the area remains the perfect location for the Artwalk. The vibrant shopping and dining district located conveniently at the intersection of Loop 101 and the SR51 features a wide array of restaurants, services, entertainment and more. “High Street is like a minicity right in the middle of the desert. It’s urban, modern and hip with so much nightlife and so many dining establishments,” she says. “It’s lit up as if there’s a party there every night — so it’s a great setting for people to come and enjoy a night out, which they had come to High Street to experience anyway! It’s a great place to have the Artwalk.” Every show going forward takes place along 54th Street, a small auxiliary road, which is where High Street Gallery is, and still allows people convenient access to Main Street so they can funnel in and out. This location draws people into the gallery and along 54th Street where artists are set up and there is live music playing throughout the event. Each show also features highlighted artists, who

Niblick explains showcase not the type of art one would expect to see — or they may be yet-to-be-discovered talents. Artist Joe Holdren has been the director and curator of Ice House Gallery, and now also helps run the newly opened High Street Gallery. Holdren is being highlighted during the next show, which takes place on Saturday, November 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. as well as a few following shows. Holdren is a large scale painter with a large collector base. The Alabama-born artist moved to the valley six years ago to obtain his MFA from ASU and currently has his works on display at the FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel full time. Editorial photographer Heath Grout, who has lived in Arizona since 1983 and graduated from Chaparral High School before following his artistic dreams to the Big Apple, returns to the valley as the highlighted artist for the Artwalk’s December show on Saturday the 14th. Grout will be showcasing photographs, mixed media art and even custom designed apparel by his company, Agency Nomadic, which he runs with business partner Max P. Goodwin, creative director and designer of the company. During both the November and December shows, the Mark Zubia Band will entertain crowds. Zubia is featured in the Arizona Music northtatumtimes.com

COVER STORY and Entertainment Hall of Fame for his work with the Pistoleros, Doug Hopkins (of the Gin Blossoms), and more. In addition to the highlighted artists, there are artistic vendors of all mediums showcasing their works and wares during the Everything Beautiful Artwalk including jewelers, sculptures, painters and more. “Pretty much every medium is represented,” adds Niblick. Beyond art and live music performances, High Street itself offers an endless variety of food and entertainment for those looking for a complete night out experience to enjoy. With restaurants like Modern Margarita, High & Rye, La Bocca Wine Bar, Ocean Prime, Mellow Mushroom and more, and entertainment such as Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy, Pinspiration (where budding artist wanna-be’s may find crafty inspiration!) and Torch Cigar Bar, time spent strolling along High Street before or after the Artwalk makes for a complete date night or family night on the town! “Food, entertainment and more are just steps outside where the artists are,” she adds.

on the sidewalk. Now we have enough artists to close down part of a street and we draw in so many people.” She notes that they want not only visitors and neighborhood residents to feel welcome, but also the artists. “We encourage artists of all levels to be a part of our show,” she says,. “We want to introduce our community to our local artists and to help people understand that they don’t need to go to LA or New York to find amazing art —it’s right here in our own backyard.” “Arizona in general has amazing art in nearly every community. Phoenix has such a strong art community as does Old Town Scottsdale’s Arts District,” she continues. “It’s just this

little pocket here that is missing that dedicated artists’ community. With the Everything Beautiful Artwalk, we hope to serve as the bridge that connects people to the area’s art — and the people who create it.” The quick growth the event has experienced in such a short time appears as evidence that residents are responding well to having this niche filled. Niblick says that the local artists community is welcome to reach out directly with interest in being part of the show or simply with questions about it. People can check out the website at www. everythingbeautifulartwalk.org,

and updates are often posted on their social media outlets including Facebook (www.facebook.com/ everythingbeautifulartwalk/) and Instagram (www.instagram.com/ everythingbeautifulartwalk/). In addition, attendees are welcome to reach out directly by emailing questions to info@ everythingbeautifulartwalk.org. The company is currently seeking artists for the coming shows for the remainder of the year and invite artists of all types and skill levels to register! From experienced artists to those that have never shown their work before in a public setting, now is the time to be part of something beautiful!

The November and December shows will also serve as great shopping opportunities for those who are looking for holiday gifts for the art lovers on their lists. As people come to shop and interact with the artists and vendors, Niblick hopes that relationships will begin to form with local residents and the artists. As the year comes to a close, Niblick reveals that they have big plans for the event in the coming year and are so excited about what the future has to hold. After the November and December shows, they will take a break in January, and then roll into new events for 2020. Reflecting on how much has happened since the Artwalk’s not-so-distant beginnings, Niblick says, “We have grown so much in just one year. BE HOMESMART: THE BATSON TEAM – FROM OUR VIEWPOINT

By Al and Jean Batson The Batson Team

ast month we discussed timeshares; this month we’re responding to inquiries about owning vacation rental properties. What are the legal ramifications of owning a property to rent out for vacation rentals (i.e. through VRBO, HomeAway, Airbnb etc. – also referred to as “short-term rentals)? There has been some concern/ controversy because owners of rental properties want the right to make money on their properties - however there have been situations of parties or bad behavior by those vacationers that impacted the neighbors. Sadly, the renters we hear about are the few inconsiderate ones; most renters are very respectful of the properties.

The State Legislature has spoken with the recent passage of HB2672: • Short-term rentals are lawful in Arizona; local municipalities do not have the authority to restrict them. • All short-term rental owners must obtain a transaction privilege tax license and list that number on all advertising. Failure to comply will result in civil penalties. • The owner must provide the local town/city government their contact information so they can be notified if the city gets complaints about the property/tenants. • The new law provides that the town or city shall notify the owner and the Department of Revenue, within 30 days, if any complaints are received that result in verified violations and civil penalties. • Short-term rentals are prohibited from having “special events” at the property that require any kind

While not specified in the House Bill, owners should certainly post rules and “Quiet Times.” Tenants expect information to be posted explaining the area, local events, restaurants and house rules and other helpful information. Short-term rentals can be profitable. Vacationers often prefer a private home vs. a hotel and are willing to pay a premium price for such a space. Short-term rental properties can be a good investment in the right area with an appealing property. High-season rates can bring much higher rates per week/month. These types of rentals require knowledge and work on the owner’s part to tastefully and completely furnish the home, including cable TV and internet. What would you want to be there if you were ready to start your vacation? The most important ingredient to owning a short-term rental is the business end; you need someone to clean it thoroughly and check to be sure everything is complete (nothing missing or broken). HOPEKIDS PROVIDES HOPE

E

ric and Tabatha White joined HopeKids in June 2017 after their daughter, Raven, age 4, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia - a type of cancer that affects white blood cells and is the most common form of childhood cancer in the U.S.

“After the initial shock, the child life specialist at the hospital brought us a binder detailing organizations, resources and support groups,” Tabatha said. “She emphasized that our family should join HopeKids.”

HopeKids provides ongoing events and activities for families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition, such as cancer. Each month, they schedule a variety of sporting events, live performances, museum visits or other types of fun activities for the whole family. “Raven spent much of the time since her diagnosis in the hospital,” Tabatha said. “I had no idea how difficult it would be for her brothers, Roman and Taj. [HopeKids] provided a special evening for the two to spend time together that we could never have afforded with the increasing medical expenses.” Shortly after joining HopeKids, Tabatha couldn’t believe how incredible it was to meet another family with a daughter near the same age as Raven and a similar diagnosis. The two families met through HopeKids’ online forum and made a point for the two girls to meet once Raven was out of the hospital. “When Lily and Raven met for the first time, they pointed to each other’s nearly bald heads and hugged,” Tabatha said. “We all knew we had met someone else who gets it.”

HopeKids strives to keep kids focused on the future, looking forward to the next fun event around the corner, rather than dwelling on what

they are dealing with in the present. All events are focused on the whole family to prevent siblings from being unintentionally overlooked, bring families together that understand their journey, and are offered at no cost to families. “You would be hard-pressed to find anyone close to us who has not heard about HopeKids and the impact it has had on our life through this difficult journey,” Tabatha said. “Seeing and meeting other families through HopeKids has provided a lot of comfort in our hardest days.” Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 children cope with life-threatening medical conditions. These conditions affect the entire family with more than half of parents suffering from acute stress disorders and 80 perce of siblings having elevated levels of posttraumatic stress. “We love attending HopeKids events now as a family,” Tabatha said. “Spending this quality time together is important while Raven continues treatment for a couple more years.” Numerous studies show that hope can increase one’s overall ability to cope, and familial support in chronically ill children is vital. HopeKids understands they are not a cure for these illnesses, but they believe hope is a powerful medicine. HopeKids Arizona began in 2001 and currently serves more than 1,400 families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition. GETAWAY

Visiting SOUTHERN AR IZONA

HISTORY, NATURE, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

J

ust north of the Mexico border and a bit south of Phoenix you can find a part of the state that is steeped in history, beautiful terrain, and fascinating sights to visit. Southern Arizona is a great place for a weekend getaway, and an ideal location to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals heading to locations further north. The gateway to Southern Arizona is Tucson, which is a destination unto itself, but a little further south you can find many interesting small towns, national and state parks, historic sites, and local artists and wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorite Southern Arizona towns and the must-see places to visit when you go. BENSON The first stop on our list is Benson, Arizona. A tiny town of about 5,000 people, Benson is the first major stop on the highway past Tucson. The town was founded as a railroad terminal and a stagecoach station, serving as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way through the southern part of Arizona. It’s historical status as a “pit stop” for tourists passing through remains to this day. One of Benson’s key features, however, is that it is also the home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. This world-class Arizona State Park features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. The

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course, touring the caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance as tours book up quickly. SIERRA VISTA A bit further down the road, past Kartchner Caverns on Highway 90, you’ll find the town of Sierra Vista. Much closer to the border of Mexico, Sierra Vista is a larger community with a population of around 44,000. The Hummingbird Capital of the World, Sierra Vista has a more temperate climate than Phoenix, with beautiful mountain views, big skies, and tons of Old West history. As one of the key settings for many of the popular Joanna Brady novels by J. A. Jance, this idyllic area is a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors and hike one of the many Southern Arizona “sky islands.” Sierra Vista is also adjacent to the historic U.S. Army base, Fort Huachuca. Constructed in 1877, Fort Huachuca was one of several forts established to protect southern Arizona against the legendarily ferocious Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. It was also headquarters of the famed 10th Calvary, also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” The fort is still an active Army base today, but you can

visit the historic district and see many of the notable Old West structures still standing. TOMBSTONE One of the most well-known small towns in Southern Arizona is Tombstone, located down Highway 80, south of Benson. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. With a population of less than 1,500 people, Tombstone is still one of the most popular places for Arizona tourists to visit and experience a true taste of western history. Visitors can see a reenactment of the showdown at the O.K. Corral, visit Boot Hill Cemetery, or stop in the historic Rose Tree Inn Museum. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. If you’re looking for a trip to one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, this is it. BISBEE Further south down Highway 80, about 10 miles north of the Mexican border, is the small town of Bisbee. A cultural

mecca for artists, the historic mining town is home to about 5,600 people with charmingly restored Victorian homes, galleries, museums, and historic sites throughout the town. The Queen Mine was one of the richest copper mines in history and is still a popular spot for visitors. WILCOX One of our favorite stops as we travel further west on I-10 towards New Mexico is Wilcox. A small town of not quite 4,000 people, Wilcox is known as southern Arizona wine country. An agricultural oasis, the Wilcox area produces almost 75 percent of the grapes grown in Arizona, and grows more wine-making grapes than any other region in the state. This small railroad town is also the gateway to the Chiricahua National Monument, known for its fascinating rock formations and mountain trails. Located at the convergence of the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre, Sonoran Desert, and Chihuahuan Deserts, Chiricahua is one of most unique National Park sites to visit in the state. Southern Arizona is a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique, historical places and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each town and be sure to check www.LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! northtatumtimes.com

CHEW ON THIS

YOUR GUIDE TO LOCAL DINING LUCCICARE ITALIAN RESTAURANT By Just Your Average Joe

T

onight we dine Italian at LUCCICARE Italian Restaurant. Located at 4727 E. Bell Rd., Ste. 59 in Phoenix, LUCCICARE is a central for anyone living in the north valley. LUCCICARE boasts one thing the loudest…FRESH. Each of their pastas are house made and the ingredients are all brought to the kitchen at their peak. The menu has its staples however it does change regularly and for good reason; if you want fresh, you have to work with what is in season. Facing Tatum in the plaza,

LUCCICARE sparkles with its café style lights. As you walk through, you feel as if you are in an Italian café with a slightly modern twist on décor. The tables are well spaced so there is no issue with elbow room, or there is bar seating if you are dining alone. There are even a few tables for patio dining, if you want to sit outside and take advantage of this gorgeous weather. The staff is small, but the waitress took her time with us and was extremely helpful with the menu. The menu itself was full of favorites. Appetizers included Brushetta, a Charcuterie Board and mussels. Pastas each had multiple choices of styles and included Ravioli, Lasagna,

Penne, Tagliatelle and more. The entrees options all looked spectacular; Italian sausage, Meatballs, Parmesan (your choice of chicken, eggplant or veal), Osso Bucco and seafood. If you’re in the mood for pizza, they offer a Neapolitan and a deep-dish Sicilian pizza, as well as an authentic Stromboli loaf. Traditional desserts cap it off with tiramisu or Cannoli’s. My choices tonight included a Caprese starter, house salad and an entrée of Chicken Piccata. The Caprese was excellent. The flavors complimented each other, and it was obvious that everything was at its peak of freshness with their house made mozzarella, Roma tomatoes and basil. The house salad was a crisp spring mix with tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncini, olives and onion. As for the main course - as any true Italian house would have it, the plate held enough to ensure I would not leave hungry. The hand pounded chicken was juicy and the sauce was extremely flavorful without

being overpowering. While I hardly had room for a dessert, I couldn’t turn down an opportunity to try their cannoli’s. After all was said and done, I was in for one more surprise - a complimentary Limoncello. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a fantastic way to end a meal and help with digestion. This little detail genuinely put this meal over the top for me. It may not seem like much but for me, it’s the little things. As luck would have it, I live just up the road from LUCCICARE. This will become a regular stop, even if it’s just for a pickup order; but I think the location is part of the dining experience. Slowing down and enjoying the meal, either with the staff or with friends and family makes it all the better. Oh, and I would be remiss if I did not mention that they cater too - the holidays are upon us! Check out LUCCICARE online at www.luccicarephx.com.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON

A police detective tries to figure out a series of similar murders that occur every nine years. Combining sci-fi with more grounded genres like crime can lead to mixed results, but In the Shadow of the Moon is done in a way that is both creative and satisfying. Director Jim Mickle gives a unique look and feel to each decade the film is set. Boyd Holbrook gives one of his best performances as the lead, balancing obsession, sadness and determination in a great way. Michael C. Hall is also enjoyable as his brother-in-law who starts as the “jerk sibling” but slowly becomes more empathetic over time. A little more development behind the killer in question would have been ideal, however the film is still a satisfying piece of pulp with a new take on the genre. *NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.

GEMINI MAN

A retiring assassin is on the run from an organization using a younger clone of himself to try to kill him. Ang Lee gives us an exciting look as to what the future of cinema will be. While I can’t speak for the high frame rate 3D (the viewing was in 2D), the de-aging work is well done. Aside from

one scene, the young Will Smith looks lifelike and highlights the real potential this technology has. The action is also a lot of fun. DP Dion Beebe, working with Lee, captures the intensity and high speed of each scene, including some great one takes. The script, however, is another story. It felt jumbled, thin and has clearly been rewritten multiple times by different screenwriters since the 90s. A good example of an interesting idea that is executed poorly.

IN THE TALL GRASS

A brother and sister get lost in a field of grass searching for a young boy, only to discover the field is more than what it seems.

In the Tall Grass is a prime example of why some stories should stay in written form. You can only have people walk into grass, wander around and scream for each other for so long before one becomes bored. If the characters have nothing beyond basic traits (concerned brother, mother-to-be, creepy kid, etc.), you have a bigger issue at hand. Great photography, including some interesting incorporations of CGI, can only get you so far. The film doesn’t even have much of the viciousness of the original novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Of the numerous King works that have yet to be adapted, this is one that was unneeded.

BUSINESS BEWARE OF GREEDY LANDLORDS AS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE CONTINUES TO BOOM

D

r. Scott is a successful chiropractor in the Valley. He built his business in a prime location, doing all the right things to build a clientele. And then he made a horrible mistake. He renewed his lease on his own. As soon as he signed, he was paying twice the going rate for office space in nearby complexes. “The landlord was selling the building and I only had a few weeks to make a decision on whether to stay or go. I was too busy and felt pressured, so I just signed the lease and figured I would deal with it when it came up for renewal again. So here we are,” said Dr. Scott. “Here we are” translates into him paying $3,200 per month when he should be paying closer to $1,600. The lease also included a clause that prohibited him from relocating within

a three-mile radius of his current location. I kept seeing these nightmare stories for business owners time and time again, and knew that I had to do something to help. So, I spent the past year putting together a book that provides money saving tips and a sure-fire 11 step guide to help businesses when leasing office, medical, industrial and retail space, before they found themselves in Dr. Scott’s position. Below are a few things to remember when leasing commercial space: • Tenant representation costs nothing for businesses and can save you thousands of dollars and help avoid major problems. • Discuss your business plan and exit strategy with your tenant rep before touring space.
