ANNOUNCES LIVE & LOCAL EVENT

O

n Sunday, November 12, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCS) will hold its Live & Local event, transforming the District at Desert Ridge in Phoenix to a red-carpet dining and entertainment event destination. Celebrating the best of the Arizona dining, cocktail and live music scene, Live & Local’s entertainment and culinary lineup includes local restaurant and beverages partners, celebrity mixologists, performers and more. The Live & Local event is presented by GoDaddy.

Hosted by the BGCS Associate Board and in partnership with the Arizona Restaurant Association, the event features acclaimed restaurants offering tasty bites — such as Tryst, The Thumb, Chef Wade’s Bistro on Wheels, and The Dhaba — and performances by local entertainment on the Main Stage near Dave & Busters from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $65 each and include access to on-stage entertainment, beer garden and wine tastings, and samplings from 20 local restaurants. VIP tickets are $150 each, and include mixologists serving up drinks from a full cocktail bar, upgraded wine selections, 10 additional restaurants catering exclusively to VIP guests, and an after party from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. “It’s an honor to bring recognition to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, an organization we’ve passionately supported for many years,” said Stacy Bennett, GoDaddy Corporate Responsibility Lead. “Beyond supporting a worthy cause, we’re looking forward to getting the community together to enjoy local food, libations and entertainment.” “We are grateful for the partners and sponsors who come together, work hard and put on such an amazing event to help us continue to serve children and teens in need throughout Greater Scottsdale,” said Dr. Lisa Hurst, BGCS CEO. Tickets can be purchased and additional information found at www.bgcs.org/liveandlocal.

ABOUT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale (BGCS) serves thousands of youth at nine Clubs located within the communities of Scottsdale, North Phoenix, Fountain Hills, Mesa, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Hualapai Nation. Research shows that the more time youth spend at a Boys & Girls Club, the more likely they are to feel more connected to school and have greater postsecondary aspirations. The door to our kids’ futures is often crowded by temptation and misdirection making it difficult for them to reach their full potential. Inside our doors, youth development professionals and mentors provide guidance, support and encouragement in an enriching and safe environment. Our outcomebased programming assures that success is in reach for all kids and teens who enter our doors, no matter their circumstances.

CALLING ALL DESERT RIDGE PARENTS

By Erin Moorhead

CALLING ALL PARENTS, THE DESERT RIDGE PARENTS’ GROUP NEEDS YOU! WHY JOIN A PARENTS GROUP YOU ASK? When families join a parent group, they can meet other families with similar interests, activities and likes. Parent groups can serve many purposes, but one

of their most important can be to introduce families to others like themselves in their community. When my family and I moved to Desert Ridge almost three years ago, we were instantly looking to connect with other families in the area. After spending many days at the park and walking around the neighborhood with no real connections, I started to search on-line. My Facebook search led me to the Desert Ridge Parents’ Group. I joined immediately and started to connect with other moms and families located within

my own community. The events were convenient, easy and fun. I now serve on the Board and am lucky to work alongside several amazing moms and dads to continue to grow and benefit from this wonderful group. Founded in 1997, The Desert Ridge Parents’ Group (DRPG) is a fun-filled organization for parents and children in the North phoenix area. Focusing on families with infants through early elementary school, DRPG offers play dates, family events, Mom’s & Dad’s Nights Out and much more. There is something for everyone to enjoy with all events conveniently taking

place in and around our wonderful Desert Ridge Community. If you are new to the area or simply looking to mix and mingle with other Desert Ridge Families, this is the group for you. All families in the Desert Ridge community are invited to check out our activities and events. For more information find us on our Facebook page at Desert Ridge Parents’ Group.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA: SPONSORSHIP OF WREATHS ON NATIONAL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY EACH DECEMBER, VOLUNTEERS PLACE WREATHS ON INDIVIDUAL VETERANS’ GRAVES IN OVER 1,200 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE U.S., with ceremonies at sea, and at each of the national cemeteries on foreign soil.

The Paradise Valley Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution is supporting sponsorship of wreaths for our Veterans who are buried at the Arizona National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, at Cave Creek and Pinnacle Peak. The ceremony will take place on December 16 at 10 am.

We are not here to “decorate graves.” We’re here to remember not their deaths, but their lives. —Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America

When we lay wreaths on veterans’ graves, we say their names. We encourage every volunteer who places a wreath on a veteran’s grave to say that veteran’s name aloud and take a moment to thank them for their service to our country. It’s a small act that goes a long way toward keeping the memory of our veterans alive. Wreaths may be purchased online

at www.Wreaths AcrossAmerica. org. Deadlines to purchase wreaths is November 24. If you have any questions, please contact Carolyn Rearley, DAR WAA Chair at grandma4cjs@cox.net or by phone at 480-998-4226.

BUSINESS

IN WEINSTEIN’S WAKE: STUDY SAYS 1 IN 3 WOMEN HAVE BEEN SEXUALLY HARASSED IN THE WORKPLACE EMPLOYMENT SOLUTIONS EXPERT ADVISES EMPLOYERS ON HOW TO KEEP THEIR WORKERS SAFE By Rob Wilson of Employco USA

1

in 3 women have been sexually harassed in the workplace. As the Harvey Weinstein scandal continues to rock Hollywood, millions of these women have taken to Twitter to use the hashtag #MeToo and share their own story of trauma.

“Many of the people using the #MeToo hashtag are revealing stories of being sexually harassed in the workplace,” says Rob Wilson, President of Employco USA and workplace trends expert. “While we would like to believe that predators like Harvey Weinstein are rare, sexual harassment is actually a common problem that women (and men) in the workplace face.” So how can employers help to protect their workers?

Here, Wilson reveals these Do’s and Donts: Do watch your humor: “We have all heard blonde jokes, and perhaps you even know a few blondes who find them funny,” says Wilson. “But that doesn’t matter. These could be construed as misogynist in nature because they are attacking women, so they could land you in hot water.” Do beware of what you post on Facebook. “We once had a company that needed to terminate an employee because his social media was rife with sexy images. He felt he had the right to post whatever he wanted, but because he was friends with other employees on his page, they said the behavior made them uncomfortable around him. So, save your lust for Kim Kardashian—or don’t friend your coworkers.”

Don’t think you have to be the ‘target’ to speak up. “Even if you are not the one who is being flirted with, you can go to H.R. and complain if the behavior is making you uncomfortable. That is all that is required—that the behavior makes you uneasy as an employee and threatens your feeling of security, whether or not you are in the direct line of attention.” Do make your dress code policy gender-neutral. “Dress code policies used to advise women to wear skirts or pumps, or men to wear neckties. But, nowadays, it is frowned upon to ask women to dress in feminine ways or to wear makeup. Instead, advise all employees to present a well-groomed appearance, and to wear business-formal or business-casual attire. You can

make stipulations such as ‘no revealing clothing,’ but make it across the board—not just for women.” Don’t forget about LGBTQ rights. “Riffing on Caitlyn Jenner or teasing a coworker for his gender/sexual orientation counts as sexual harassment, even if you think it is all in good fun. This could even include ‘mis-gendering’ someone—such as using the wrong pronoun or name.” Wilson concludes, “There are many more behaviors which are frowned on in today’s workplace, such as referring to women as ‘gals’ or ‘girls,’ or making personal comment to pregnant/nursing employees. People today want their workplaces to feel safe and welcoming, and they aren’t afraid to take legal action if their rights are stepped on.”

HI, MY NAME IS...

PROFILE ON LOCAL BUSINESS: SIMON KREISBERGER MY COMPANY & TITLE IS…. The Play Factory, Desert Ridge Marketplace. I am its owner, creator and officially the biggest kid there. Yes, I refuse to grow up. That why The Play Factory is the perfect office for me.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I pride myself on not only being a passionate, hands on business owner but also the world’s greatest husband and hands on father to my 3 boys. With that comes a whole lot of prioritizing and organizing

each day to make sure you squeeze in the important things. My mornings are always filled with lots of good morning hugs, cereal with the kids on the couch watching cartoons and sending them off for the day. Once they’re off, I run to the nearest phone booth, get into my superman outfit and I am full on into super multi-tasking mode throughout the day. I’m always working through my endless to-do lists to get everything done from emails and phone calls, running errands, trying to make all my scheduled meetings on time (that’s where the cape comes in handy) and balancing all my business projects along with the personal responsibilities of raising a family. Most people if asked how your day going would sarcastically reply “living the dream,” or “another day in paradise.” I on the other hand have been living the American Dream in paradise. I am truly blessed with healthy children, an amazing wife and incredible stories around the dinner table at night of life, love and laughter.

THE PLAY FACTORY IS LOCATED IN DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE AT 21001 N. TATUM BLVD., #38-1335, PHOENIX, AZ 85050

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE DESERT RIDGE AREA IS… The atmosphere. I love the North Phoenix vibe especially on the District at Desert Ridge where it’s dynamic and hip.

I love the families who frequent my store. Amazing young families with a zest for life which always helps keep my day fun. YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE YOU COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Three Amigos. “Would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?” First I’m an 80’s movie buff so pretty much anything from that era works for me especially anything with Chevy Chase in it like the National Lampoon series. Classic. MY FAMILY… Is my rock and the foundation on which I can only survive. They are the only people I would want to venture into and through this thing called life with. Best teammates anyone can ask for. They are the backbone of the entire operation! THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… Once you’ve finally taken that leap of faith, are all in and pursing your passion, it’s really important to understand the economics of business and how to sustain your growth and build your dream through making smart decisions and at the same time following your instinct and understanding this one little things called cash flow. I knew nothing of this when I started out. I just thought ‘if you build it they will come’ and they did…until they didn’t. With the onset of the economic depression in 2008, disposable income for everyone went down the tubes. I made it through those times with great advice from people much smarter than me who have been there before and came out a much stronger business owner as a result. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… If we are talking about material

HYPER LOCAL NEWS FOR THE PHOENIX NORTH VALLEY / northtatumtimes.com

• November 2017 • 9

things, it would be my legal notepad with my to-do list on it. I use my smartphone for a lot of things but I’m old school when it comes to checking things off my list. If we are talking food, it would be chicken parm and spaghetti. If we are talking more spiritual, I would have to say laying with each one of children at bedtime where they teach me that every day is so precious and life goes by too fast. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A fighter pilot. My father was an aerospace engineer at Northrop Grumman and his work inspired me from a young age but when I got through high school, I realized my passion lied in other spaces. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... Paradise City and Sweet Child O Mine by Guns and Roses. Both of those songs bring back incredible memories of my teenage years back in New York where I grew up. Good times. Good times. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My wife. Not only is she my number one supporter but she inspires me every day with her work over the past 20 years as one of the most dedicated, passionate Kindergarten teachers. I cannot take any credit when it comes to getting it all done. My wife Lauren is

HI, MY NAME IS...

the glue that holds it all together and I am awe everyday how she gets it all done. I can never complain and I don’t.

The last thing that made me laugh out loud was… this comedian I was listening to on the Sirius XM comedy channel. I still have no idea who he was but he made me laugh so hard while driving that I started to cry and almost had to pull over. 30 minutes later in a meeting, he crept into my mind and I couldn’t stop laughing. Yes, I looked a bit strange. THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… Today, tomorrow and the next day. I am so blessed and so thankful for what God has given me. With everything going on in the world, to see how people are effected and how they are living and going through each and every day, I know what we have is close to perfect. I am so appreciative of our health, our freedom and the opportunities I have been given to pursue my passions. MY FIRST JOB WAS… A film editor at one of the largest post production houses in New York city where we cut film for various broadcast stations. Graduating from the Walter Cronkite School at ASU in 1996, my first passion was film followed by broadcast news.

MY LIFE… Is a gift from God and my parents of course. I’m currently working on… the next chapter in my life, a bucket list item that you will all hear about soon if you haven’t already. I am in the process of building one of the largest drive though holiday light shows in the southwest called “Illumination” right on the I-17 Freeway and Jomax which I hope you will all take your families to and experience the magic I have felt in my heart for years that I have finally been able to bring to life. If that wasn’t enough, I am also a wine producer. I import some of the most incredible wine from all over the world and I distribute here all over Arizona. If you have a restaurant, bar or hotel, I can help you build the most amazing wine list to offer your customers. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS...my life. Think about it. The most obvious and popular answer would be my wife and kids but I have to tell you that without God and my parents giving me the gift of life, I wouldn’t have been able to receive all the beautiful gifts I’ve been given throughout my own life including my wife and kiddos. Love you mom and dad! THE ACTOR I WOULD WANT

TO PLAY ME IN A MOVIE OF MY LIFE IS... Tom Cruise. I do all my own stunts and if I fall down, I just get back on keep on going and whenever I do something I am in it for the long haul. Tom Cruise has been around a long time and loves his craft as do I love what I do every day. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE TO… build a tiny house and travel the country with my kids before they go off to college. We have been fortunate to travel the US and throughout many parts of the world together but it’s been on our bucket list to do the tiny house thing. Love HGTV! MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS... Is what any other small business owner would say and knows and that’s to put it all on the line. Take the leap of faith, follow your passion, leave the status quo behind and do whatever it is you love. But do something that will make a difference in other people’s lives. My passion is creating experiences for people that will create beautiful memories for a lifetime. It’s my life’s mission statement. Figure out your purpose, your passion, don’t listen to your parents and dive head first in. It’s the most amazing feeling once you get there.

We thought so. “We’re delighted to return to High Street and call it home to our largest Farmers Market”, said Monique Lightner, owner of M&M events who produces the monthly event. “High Street offers such a warm, neighborhood that lends itself perfectly to a community event like the Farmers Market.” November and December’s Farmers Market will continue to grow and offer holiday treats and décor that should not be missed. “We welcomed more than 4,000 guests to the first market in October and we’re excited to see how many people will attend in the coming months”, said Lightner. is friendly when meeting thousands of new people.

“We’ve revived the Farmers Market on High Street to fill a significant void of quality markets in the north Valley”, said Bryan Laurel, marketing spokesperson for High Street. “Our intent is to grow our Farmers Market every month. We insist on growth, quality and variety so when regulars return each time, they’re experiencing something larger and with more offerings”. If haven’t yet visited High Street, you’re missing out. If you think you know High Street, it probably more than you remember. For the uninitiated, High Street is the north Valley’s growing entertainment district and a gem in the Desert Ridge area offering an alternative to typical malls and strip centers. THE ZOO REVIEW! THE BEST ZOOS AND WILDLIFE PARKS IN ARIZONA By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

O

ne of our favorite things to do as a family when the weather cools off is to visit the zoo. Any zoo. Every zoo. It’s a great way to get outside, enjoy the weather and see nature and wildlife in action. Arizona has some outstanding zoos and wildlife parks. Each of these places has something unique to offer – they are all much more than just a zoo. And all of them are worth the trip! Wildlife World Zoo It’s a zoo. It’s an amusement park. It’s a peek into a privately run breeding program. This zoo has something for everyone. Animals from around the world are plentiful and the Wildlife World Zoo lets you see them up close and personal. This privately-owned zoo participates in a breeding program for many of its animals, which lets you see baby animals all year round. It also features a hands-on petting zoo with goats, sheep, baby deer, llamas, desert tortoises and more. And don’t forget the aquarium, where you can see everything from penguin feedings, to sharks, to the only sea lions in Arizona. There are many other fun activities available, too. The train and safari rides take you through the African animal enclosures. The boat tour drifts through the Australian animal exhibit. The sky ride takes you across the park and over the animal enclosures. And many of the dozens of new amusement park rides in the zoo’s new Adventureland area weave their way through the North American animals exhibits (you can

say hello to the llamas while you ride the rollercoaster). With the largest collection of exotic animals in Arizona, this zoo in Litchfield Park is worth the price. Phoenix Zoo The Phoenix Zoo is a traditional, world-class city zoo right in the heart of Phoenix. It features animals from across the globe and participates in a wide range of conservation efforts locally and globally. The zoo was recently granted accreditation by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). Due to its leadership in animal welfare and conservation efforts, the AZA considers it to be one “the best zoos and aquariums in the world.” This zoo is unique to Phoenix and is always a joy to visit. The Phoenix Zoo hosts special activities, events, camps, and educational programs throughout the year. Out of Africa Out of Africa Wildlife Park is an adventure and a joyful animal encounter experience just a short drive from Phoenix. This Camp Verde zoo and wildlife park has an amazing collection of wild animals from Africa and many other parts of the world. It also provides a caring home for rescued wildlife from around the country. Visitors are allowed to see, and sometimes interact with, the animals up close and in action. Out of Africa offers a wide variety of options to see the animals, from a behind the scenes tour, to a tram ride through various enclosures, to a zipline run over the park. This unique and

fascinating experience makes for a great day trip north of Phoenix. Bearizona Bearizona is a one-of-a-kind wildlife park in Williams, Arizona, just west of Flagstaff. This state of the art wildlife refuge allows visitors to drive through enclosures with bears, wolves, coyotes, elk, bighorn sheep, bison, and other large animals native to Arizona and North American. You can then park and walk through a zoo to see smaller animals, including young bears. The Birds of Prey show is up close and personal, with owls, falcons, hawks and other birds of prey flying directly over the heads of audience members while the host describes each bird. If you are headed for Northern Arizona, take some time to visit Williams and see Bearizona if you have a chance. You’ve never seen anything like it!

bordering the Saguaro National Park West. The paths through the museum allow you experience the wildlife, flora and fauna of the desert from javelinas, to butterflies and birds, to mountain lions, bears and bobcats. One of our favorite areas is the geological display of underground caves and gemstones. Plan to stop at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum the next time you visit Tucson – it’s one you shouldn’t miss. These are just a few of the many places to see animals, wildlife and nature up close in Arizona. Watch Ladybug’s Blog for more fun with animal sightings in our state! Sonoran Desert Museum The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson is natural park that is completely unique to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert. PVCC GROUP ORGANIZES EFFORTS TO HELP DACA STUDENTS

Now, many DACA students are anticipating for their applications for renewal to be processed, while Congress is deciding the future of the program. As of Oct. 3, The Department of Homeland Security will stop issuing any new applications for DACA program, according to CNN. No students will lose their status before the program expires, and all applications received before the announcement will be processed, CNN reported.

Olave-Rodriguez mentioned PVCC has one of the strongest leadership training among the Maricopa Community Colleges, which helped the affected students. Some DACA students had meetings with administration and leadership and are ready to stand up for other DACA students. The DACA event was a brainstorming session on what could be done to help DACA students and how to implement that, according to OlaveRodriguez.

Atchison mentioned attendees of the DACA event came up with many ideas to help, like forming scholarships or doing book drives where stu-

Atchison was also saddened by the decision, especially because DACA kids were brought here not by their own choosing. They had to leave because there was something going on in their country or hometown, and their parents felt like they need to take them someplace where they can have a potential in life.

“We are doing what we can here,” said Camila Olave-Rodriguez, a sophomore at PVCC and a worker at Student Life and Leadership. “But most of the stuff is not personal enough for DACA students, not everyone knows who they are.”

“How can a college help other than accepting students for who they are?” said Victor Atchison, a former PVCC student who is still actively involved in Student Life and Leadership at PVCC. “Everyone is here to get an education. DACA students pay their way through college, they work, they pay taxes, just like any other American citizen.”

“Anger. Sadness. And just frustration,” said Rowdy Duncan, a Student Life and Leadership specialist at PVCC, regarding his reaction to Trump’s decision. “It has been much more difficult since I have become much more personally connected with folks that have DACA. The closer you are to someone that is affected, the deeper you feel it.”

Duncan along with a non-profit organization Aliento planned a Civil Conversations Series: DACA Allies Training at PVCC, bringing people together and organizing help for DACA students. Aliento focuses on helping people who are directly impacted by the unjust laws of immigration. Currently, Aliento is offering scholarships to DACA students to cover their renewal fees because these funds cannot come out of financial aid that the college offers, according to Duncan.

The Conversation Series focused on educating attendees on what DACA is, its benefits and downfalls, as well as connecting DACA students with people who can help – bankers, scholarship providers, and other students. Duncan said many attendees were willing to help DACA students with simple things they struggle with like opening a bank account or a credit card.

Tuesday, Oct. 3, Trump’s administration formally announced the end of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. CNN reported the program had protected nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children from deportation. Even though Trump made a decision to end the program, he gave Congress an extension to preserve the program’s protections. If the Congress does not act before the set date, nearly 300,000 people could begin to lose their status in 2018, and more than 320,000 would lose their status in 2019, according to CNN.

THE BATSON TEAM – FROM OUR VIEWPOINT

BE HOMESMART By Al and Jean Batson

Q: If we go into an Open House, should we tell the host Realtor that we’re already committed to our Realtor? A: Absolutely! In fact, once the Realtor establishes that you’re a Buyer, that is the FIRST question they should clarify. A good Realtor never interferes with that relationship.

We welcome every visitor – a Realtor never knows who will walk through the door or why. Are they just curious? Serious buyers? Committed to another Realtor? It’s our job to ascertain these things so we know how to help; or stay out of the way. Everyone who walks through is a potential resource as a buyer for the home; perhaps a friend or family member.

We are your neighborhood Realtors – we live, work and shop here in Desert Ridge. Our goal is to put Buyers and Sellers together for a smooth transaction – let us handle your next one. And, we love referrals!

If the visitor is looking to buy (or sell), whether now a year from now, we ask what they’re looking for to be of assistance; and always ask, “Are you work-

ing with a Realtor?” If they are but seem to like the property, we answer their questions and invite them to come back with their Realtor. We very much respect the loyalty the visitor has shown to their Realtor – as we appreciate our clients’ loyalty to us. The goal of an open house is to expose the property to potential buyers and find a qualified buyer – whether directly or through another agent. Obviously, the home won’t be a fit for every Buyer who walks through the door so if a visitor is looking for something different and is not already working with a Realtor, we are there to help meet their needs. Of course, if asked to provide information on values in the visitor’s neighborhood or area of interest, we’re happy to provide that – no obligation. That’s part of the service. We feel that real estate is primarily a service business. We’re here to put buyers and sellers together for a successful closing with trusted lenders, home inspection services, title/escrow officers and other services that might be needed along the way. If you have any questions, please email us at: Jean@AlandJeanBatson.com

ne of the reasons we live in Arizona is our beautiful fall and winter weather. Now that we are into November, the temperatures are dropping and we can take advantage of the weather by spending as much time outdoors as possible.

Moving the kitchen to the backyard is a little involved, depending on the specific design you are looking for. Outdoor kitchens can include the BBQ, under counter refrigerator, sink, smokers and side burner. If you want to turn the area into a complete “outdoor experience” a fireplace or fire pit is a great idea. Outdoor pizza ovens can add yet another dimension to your outdoor kitchen. The whole family can get involved with preparing the pizza. There’s nothing more satisfying than cooking on an outdoor fire to give you peace.

Director Denis Villeneuve “Arrival, Sicario” has asked critics to be as spoiler free as possible when talking about this so I will be respectful of his wish. What I can say is that Blade Runner 2049 is another fantastic work by Villeneuve and Co. His recurring DOP Roger Deakins makes even the simplest scenes look breathtaking, with the combination of colors and lighting in the scenery. The score by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch is memorable, and gives the feeling of the series while standing on its own. And of course, there’s the cast, with Ana de Armas and Harrison Ford being my personal favorites. ONLY THE BRAVE This film tells the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots from 2012-2013, leading up to the Yarnell Hill fire in Arizona. Joseph Kosinski’s previous two films (Tron: Legacy and Oblivion) were beautiful to look at, but I felt lacked in the character department. I feel Only The Brave switches that around, in that the visuals are nothing to write home about, but the ensemble cast are great. Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly in particular steal the film. It’s also impressive how real the film feels, all the way to the small details of the real story. It’s one of the better “true story” films in a while and a beautiful tribute to these men and their families.

HAPPY DEATH DAY On her birthday, Tree Gelbman constantly relives her murder and needs to find out who her killer is. The film’s main character is incredibly unlikeable, This combined with the obnoxious editing (note: a combination slow-mo and a rock scene does not always equal humor), a completely out of left field villain, and ridiculous motivation...good lord, the motivation…. does not help the movie. I had very low expectations going in the film, but it couldn’t even live up to those. It’s a rare stain on Blumhouse’s winning streak of great horror films. THE SNOWMAN In Norway, a detective investigates murders that are similar to ones that occurred nearly a decade before. I’m amazed at how disastrous this film came out. You have Tomas Alfredson, who directed the great Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and the fantastic Let The Right One In, at the helm, and a top notch cast to boot. And somehow, we get a film that feels disjointed. It’s editing is very rapid and often feels like we’ve missed a scene or two. With the exception of Michael Fasssbender and Rebecca Ferguson, the cast feels wasted, giving very disappointing performances. And I know this is not a film where CGI matters, but the very little that is used is terrible, looking fake even for a film reportedly costing only $35mil.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR LESS STRESSFUL HOLIDAY HOSTING

C

raft Nights, owned by The Hippie Hobby, is a local Arizona company that caters to bringing craft parties to you. “We realized sometimes people want us to bring the fun to them, so we started small with friends; and have grown into friends referring us to their friends, in a snowball effect, for their private craft parties. Ultimately

people wanted to show up to a craft night and have fun. We’ve allowed them to do just that by eliminating the stress of buying all the supplies, teaching the craft and cleaning it all up. We do all of that, and allow the host to be part of their party and engage with their friends,” says Heidi Koffman, co-owner of Craft Nights and The Hippie Hobby.

As the holidays approach, there is no better time to create meaningful memories with friends and family – couple that with a craft night and your guests are sure to remember you! Never thrown a party before? No sweat! The Hippie Hobby will walk you through everything you need to have a successful craft party, and even send you a checklist upon booking.

PAINT YOUR GLASS! Join us for a fun afternoon of painting, wine, and appetizers!

Here are a few tips and tricks to make holiday parties less stressful for you as a host:

$35 includes 1 glass to paint, 1 glass of wine and delicious appetizers by organic Chef Jennifer Johnson with Witnessing Nature in Food.

1. Make a list – No matter what kind of holiday party you are hosting, make a list. Plan ahead and start delegating right away. “Being a queen of delegation, I always take a moment with each Craft Night party we are a part of and know what areas I am awesome at performing, and then allow others to participate by assigning simple tasks to them”, says Heidi Koffman. Guests, employees, co-workers – whomever your party is

for LOVE to be a part of the process and feel much more involved if they can help. Never be afraid to ask! 2. Prepare the food ahead of time If you are not catering your party, and have taken the task of cooking and preparing food, start preparing food ahead of time. Soups, stews and potluck meals are well known holiday dishes. They are easy and will feed a crowd. The best part? You don’t have to make them from scratch. You can purchase them ahead of time and warm it all up the day of the party. 3. Hire it out When it comes to cleaning, hire it out! Book a cleaning company ahead of time, as in now - and allow yourself to focus on being a host, not running around last minute dusting!
