ARIZONA’S TOP WATER OFFICIAL, TOM BUSCHATZKE, IS PREPARING FOR A POTENTIAL LEGAL BATTLE OVER THE STATE’S COLORADO RIVER WATER DISTRIBUTION SHOULD ONGOING NEGOTIATIONS WITH OTHER STATES FALL THROUGH. Buschatzke is requesting $1 million from Gov. Katie Hobbs and state lawmakers as a “set-aside appropriation” to cover any potential legal expenses if an agreement on water allocation cannot be reached by 2026.
While Buschatzke hopes for a peaceful resolution between the seven basin states, various tribes, and federal agencies, he acknowledges that a legal fight is a real possibility. He continues to stress the importance of collaboration but to be prepared for the worst. If talks do break down, Arizona could face court-imposed reductions in its access to the river, potentially harming the state’s water supply.
Arizona’s Colorado River Fight Speed Scam Alert: Fake Notice of Violation Text Messages
The Bureau of Reclamation has warned that climate change and decreasing water availability could require cuts of up to 4 million acre-feet annually, beyond current reductions. The Upper Basin states—Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming— want the burden to fall on the Lower Basin states—Arizona, California, and Nevada—arguing that they are responsible for draining the reservoirs and should bear the responsibility of refilling them.
Buschatzke insists Arizona must protect its entitlement to 2.8 million acre-feet of water, an amount critical to the state’s needs. He also wants to send a message that Arizona will not back down in defending its rights and that we as a state must maintain a significant commitment to protecting our entitlement of the Colorado River.
The current operational guidelines for the river will expire in 2025, and negotiations
VALLEY AUTHORITIES HAVE RECEIVED AN INCREASE IN REPORTS OF A NEW SCAM TARGETING AREA RESIDENTS. The scam involves fraudulent “Notice of Violation” text messages which claim that a “speed monitoring camera” has captured you speeding and demanding immediate action. The text further instructs you to click a link and make immediate payment to avoid having to appear in court. Currently, the message appears to be coming from the City of Phoenix.
HOW THE SCAM WORKS
Fake Violation Message: Scammers send out mass text messages, pretending to be from legitimate authorities such as the City of Phoenix or other municipal bodies. These messages inform recipients that they have been caught speeding by a camera, often in school or construction zones where fines can be higher, making the claim that much more alarming.
Urgent Payment Demand: The message creates a sense of urgency by stating that failure to pay immediately will result in court action. This tactic is designed to panic recipients into acting quickly and without taking time to verify the claim.
Fraudulent Link: The message includes a link that

are underway to create a long-term plan. Buschatzke stresses that any agreement should last at least 20 years to ensure stability. Meanwhile, Arizona has already reduced its water usage, taking only 1.9 million acre-feet this year, compared to its full allocation of 2.8 million, to help maintain water levels in Lake Mead.

directs the receiver to a fake website, which looks legitimate and mimics an official city or court page. Once on the site, recipients are prompted to provide personal details, such as name, address, driver’s license number and payment information.
Stealing Your Information: Once the scammers have received this information, they are able to use it to steal identities, commit fraud, or access personal financial accounts. The payment details entered are compromised and the scammers begin using it for as many unauthorized transactions as they will be able to get away with.
Buschatzke’s $1 million request underscores his determination to be prepared for all possible outcomes, including a legal battle to protect Arizona’s water rights. If not funded, Arizona risks being unprepared for any potential legal action should negotiations fail between the agencies.
WHAT TO BE AWARE OF:
• Municipal Court, or any legitimate court, will never request or accept payment via text message or email.
• Legitimate requests by any government agency can be verified. No requesting agency will force you to do anything without first being able to confirm the claim. Verify the source of such messages by directly contacting the agency in question.
• Never click on links in unsolicited messages. These can lead to phishing websites designed to steal sensitive information.
HOW TO STAY PROTECTED:
• Do not click on any links in suspicious messages.
• Do not provide any personal or payment information requested through unsolicited texts or emails.
• Delete the text or email and do not respond or engage in any way.
If you or someone you know has received a suspicious text, email, phone call or in-person visit, before agreeing to anything, contact the main line for the agency or company that is in question and ask for assistance.
City News MVD’s Keys to Change station aids over 8,300 people in first year
Partnership with Homeless ID Project helps campus clients get state-issued IDs
A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION AND THE HOMELESS ID PROJECT HAS HELPED MORE THAN 8,300 PEOPLE GET STATE-ISSUED IDS IN ITS FIRST YEAR AT THE KEYS TO CHANGE CAMPUS NEAR DOWNTOWN PHOENIX.

Nearly 6,600 clients experiencing instability or homelessness have been able to get replacement driver licenses or state IDs at the campus, while an additional 1,800 people were connected with help available beyond the location. Getting a state-issued ID is essential for obtaining housing, services and employment.
MVD’s presence began with an on-site representative and has transitioned to a TeleMVD location connecting clients with live assistance.
“The TeleMVD setup inside the Homeless ID Project offices is an exciting opportunity for MVD to use technology to provide services at places they are needed at the moment our customers need them,” said Eric Jorgensen, ADOT Motor Vehicle Division Director.
“With TeleMVD directly on site, we are excited to assist the Homeless ID Project with their community efforts helping those individuals experiencing homelessness.”
The MVD presence complements the efforts of the Homeless ID Project, which helps provide documents, including replacement copies of birth certificates from all 50 states, on the Keys To Change campus.
“After one full year, our appreciation for this service remains high,” said Homeless ID Project Executive Director Rick Mitchell. “We are truly grateful to the Department. The partnership with ADOT/MVD has been a game changer in our efforts to help so many of our clients.”
This location is set up with the computer equipment, printer, scanner and camera necessary to help fulfill requests as a TeleMVD office in which customers can conduct many transactions with MVD representatives located elsewhere. City News Billie and Lulu’s: A New Plus-Size Clothing Resale Store Opening in North Phoenix
NORTH PHOENIX IS ABOUT TO GET A LOT MORE FASHIONABLE WITH THE OPENING OF BILLIE AND LULU’S, A PLUS-SIZE CLOTHING STORE SET TO OPEN MIDOCTOBER. Owned by longtime friends and business partners Natasha Beal and Heidi Koffman, Billie and Lulu’s will be the first store in the area fully dedicated to providing stylish and affordable clothing for women sizes large to 4X+.
The idea for Billie and Lulu’s was born from the success of a special section at their first store, Discover Mercantile, a popular thrift collective known for its eclectic mix of clothing and accessories, home decor and one-of-a-kind Arizona made items. Heidi, being plus-size herself, found that thrifting was often a frustrating experience due to the limited selection.
“I’ve always struggled with finding pieces that fit and made me feel good,” says Heidi. “Most plus-size sections are small and often lacking in style. I wanted to create a space where plussize women could finally feel included and find fashionable pieces that make them feel confident.”
After creating a dedicated plus-size room at Discover Mercantile, the response from the community was overwhelming. Women expressed excitement, many saying they felt "seen" for the first time. When a retail space became available in a shopping center that they both love, it was a moment of pure serendipity. The duo knew it was time to expand their vision – and Billie and Lulu’s was born.

Billie and Lulu’s will offer a wide range of styles, from vintage to modern. Shoppers can expect to find pieces that have been specially curated secondhand, are new with tags, and even custom handmade. "We focus on quality and affordability," says Natasha. “We want every woman, no matter her size, to feel confident and stylish while knowing she got a great deal."
Billie and Lulu’s will also be home to Discover Mercantile Too, a large room of local vendors carrying everything from vintage clothing and antiques to handmade candles and soaps.
More than just a clothing store, Billie and Lulu’s aims to build a community of women who want to wear fashionable plus-size clothing that is often lacking in traditional retail.
“We are passionate about helping women feel included and empowered,” adds Heidi. “It’s not just about selling clothes; it’s about creating a space where women can connect, share experiences, and feel supported.”
Billie and Lulu’s plans to have a soft opening mid-October with a grand opening scheduled in November. Stay tuned for more!

Holland Community Center Presents Fifth Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser
THE HOLLAND COMMUNITY CENTER IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT ITS POPULAR GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH FUNDRAISER WILL RETURN OVER THE WEEKEND OF OCT. 25-27. Now in its fifth year, this festive event will showcase hundreds of one-of-a-kind, hand-blown glass pumpkins crafted by Greg Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his vibrant, intricate designs. These whimsical works of art will be available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Center’s efforts as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing arts, education and community in the Desert Foothills region. The event will take place at the Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th St. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood, when road trips with his family would often include visits to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, Tomb explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. He occasionally rented glass studio time over the years and began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for world-renowned glass maker Simon Pearce. In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival and the Scottsdale Artfest. His colorful creations have also been featured in numerous museums and magazines.
In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flameworked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Additionally,

he shares his passion and talent for glass art with others by leading classes across the country, from the Bay Area Glass Institute in San Jose, Calif. to the town of Johnsburg, NY, where he is proud to serve as artist-in-residence. He is also currently operating Arizona Glassblowing Studio as the artist-inresidence of the Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak. With this year’s Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser, Tomb is eager to once again celebrate the beauty and joy of glass art with the Desert Foothills community.
The Holland Community Center is a unique partnership dedicated to promoting arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need and encouraging lifelong learning. Previously known as the Foothills Community Foundation, the Holland Community Center provides a diverse array of programs, including classes, fine art exhibits and performing arts events. As a nonprofit organization, the Center does not receive any funding from government entities and is proud to rely exclusively on the generosity of donors.

Over the weekend of Oct. 12-13, the 33rd Annual Sedona Arts Festival will showcase a diverse lineup of more than 100 juried artists from across the country. Held on the campus of Sedona Red Rock High School, 995 Upper Red Rock Loop Road in West Sedona, this renowned fine art festival will also feature live music, raffle prizes, food, and a beer and wine garden – all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sedona’s red rocks. The festival will run from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Considered Sedona’s oldest and largest premier arts event, the Sedona Arts Festival is proud to present award-winning artists working in a wide array of mediums that range from painting to sculpture to glass and beyond. The festival enjoys a great mix of returning artists, along with new artists that keep the show fresh and interesting each year.
“After 14 years of coordinating this event, what I really appreciate is the relationships I’ve created with the artists,” said Lori Reinhart, Festival Director.
“Our attendees enjoy that too. In a short amount of time, you can make a connection with an artist, and purchasing one of their pieces becomes personal and special. We have patrons who return year after year to see their favorite artists as well as connecting with new artists.”
In recent years, the Sedona Arts Festival has forged partnerships with the Sedona Visual Artists Coalition (SVAC), which presents the Verde Valley’s highly popular Open Studios Tour. Festival attendees will find a variety of SVAC members within the field of artists, participating with a wide range of artistic mediums. Additionally, SAF’s partnership with Chamber Music Sedona has mutually benefited both organizations’ missions to support arts education in Sedona and the Verde Valley. Chamber Music Sedona is working diligently to keep music education alive in local schools, providing instruments and private lessons to students and funding the schools’ orchestra program. Sedona Arts Festival’s “Dollars for Scholars” raffle features a vast offering of art prizes from the festival’s participating artists. In support of their efforts, Chamber Music Sedona receives 100% of the proceeds.
The Sedona Arts Festival rounds out its offerings with a

variety of food truck choices along with beer and wine selections. Gourmet Row features locally produced kitchen, bath and home items available for sale. The Sedona Arts Festival is also proud to include live music throughout the weekend. The lineup will be announced in the fall.
Attendees are sure to enjoy a fabulous fall day in Sedona with amazing art, food, libations and music. Admission to the Sedona Arts Festival is $15, which covers both days of the event; children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets may be purchased online at sedonaartsfestival.org.

Estate Planning Options for Pet Parents

The Law Office of Libby Banks and the Arizona Humane Society team up to raise awareness on the importance of planning for pets.
When Allison Gloss, an attorney at The Law Office of Libby Banks, had a client ask about how to make sure her cats would be taken care of when she was no longer able to do so, she began to reach out to local organizations to see if such programs existed.
She knew that the client liked to donate to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), so she gave them a call. In a moment of serendipity, she found that AHS has a Continuing Care Program for its Legacy Circle members where, if their owners predecease them, they are placed with loving families who have been carefully selected by AHS staff.
“A lot of pet parents – especially those who are older – are concerned about what will happen to their beloved pets when they pass,” explains Vanessa Martin, planned giving manager for AHS. “The Continuing Care Program offers peace of mind to our donors.”
Martin shares that the innovative program is for those who include AHS in their estate plans. She adds that planned giving counts for one third of AHS’ total revenue.
“Other organizations have similar programs, but they often have a specific gift amount,” she says. “At AHS, you can give $500 or $5 million, and we will take the same quality care of your precious pet.”
Another way this program is helpful is that it allows seniors the peace of mind to adopt pets later in life and know that they will be taken care of when it’s time.
THE IMPORTANCE OF INCLUDING PETS IN ESTATE PLANNING
Libby Banks, estate planning attorney and the owner of The Law Office of Libby Banks, says that, in addition to considering options like the Continuing Care Program, there are ways that pet parents can make sure their fur babies are taken care of when they are unable to do so.
“Just like you would create a trust and pick a guardian for your minor children, it’s similar for pets as well,” Banks explains. “One way is a pet trust where money is set aside, and a guardian chosen for the remainder of a pet’s life. If there is money left after the pet passes, it can be donated to a charity like AHS or another that was close to the pet parent’s heart.”
Oftentimes more common than a pet trust is a pet provision, where you add in your wishes for your pet within your estate planning documents.
“Whatever you decide to do to provide for your pets, it is important to put it in writing if you want it to be binding,” Banks explains. “Having a plan in place for your assets, for your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind.”
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS
One might not think that an animal rescue and an estate attorney’s office have anything in common, but both AHS and The Law Office of Libby Banks are in support of teaming up to make sure that the public is aware of the importance of including pets in estate planning.
“Partnerships like this are so important,” Martin says. “Our partners come from a wide selection of industries, and they support us in a variety of meaningful ways.”
“Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t have someone who will take their pets when they pass or are no longer able to take care of them,” Banks says. “Letting our clients know about programs like AHS’ Continuing Care Program is perfect because a lot of our clients are charity minded.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING
Even if someone isn’t a pet parent, Banks says that no one can overlook the power and necessity of estate planning.
“Big or small, most adults have an estate of some sort,” Banks says. “If you don’t plan for it, don’t worry,

the state has a plan for you; it just may not be what you want. While a large portion of estate planning is determining how your estate will be distributed at death, a good estate planner is doing much more. The estate planning professional should assure that you have the right things in place in case you become incapacitated. This provides you with peace of mind for protecting your people and pets.”

The Luxe at Desert Ridge Unveils Limited Release of Six Customizable 4,000
Square-Foot Expansive Condo Homes
The D’Luxe Offers One of the Largest New Build Condos in the Valley, Featuring Expansive Patio with Chef’s Outdoor Kitchen, See-Through Gas Fireplace, Customizable Walk-In Closets, and a Spa-Inspired Wet Room.
The Luxe at Desert Ridge, a premier gated luxury condominium development, recently unveiled a limited release of customizable expansive condos for buyers who desire hasslefree maintenance “lock and leave” living without compromise. The D’Luxe floor plan is one of the largest new-build condominium offerings in Maricopa County. Only six are available for sale.

The Luxe delivers an ideal location that backs up to the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort with views of the Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo Golf Courses adjacent to High Street, City North, and Desert Ridge Marketplace.
The D’Luxe condos feature 3,200 square feet of interior living space with three bedrooms plus a den, three and a half baths, an extra-large walk-in pantry for ample storage, dual custom closets in the primary bedroom, and an 891 square-foot outdoor patio with an outdoor chef’s kitchen, as well as other desirable features as an extension of the home like parking for two vehicles plus ample storage space in the community’s private underground parking garage.
The Statesman Group, the developer of The Luxe at Desert Ridge, identified the need for a larger condoliving option based on feedback from prospective buyers seeking to downsize from their single-family homes without sacrificing space and large home amenities.
“While many of our early residents selected The Luxe at Desert Ridge as a second or third home, we are increasingly seeing buyers looking to downsize from their primary residence averaging more than 5,000 square feet to a more spacious, maintenancefree home with all the amenities and socialization of condo living,” said Alana Mann, president of The Statesman Group.
The D’Luxe includes Sub-Zero/Wolf appliances, 10-foot ceilings, two customizable storage units in the underground parking garage, a luxurious wet room in the ensuite primary bathroom, a built-in vanity, and a spacious 335-square-foot primary bedroom. Expansive patios offer outdoor kitchens and fireplaces tastefully designed for enjoying the beautiful outdoors in sunny Arizona. Residents also have access to amenities such as Olympic-sized swimming pools, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an infrared dry sauna, a 12,000+ square-foot clubhouse, a movie room and more.
“The biggest concern for buyers downsizing from a single-family home to a condo was the lack of walk-in closets,” Mann said. “We solved that problem. The closets in the primary bedroom are massive and customizable to each buyer’s wants and needs, with more space than I’ve ever seen in a condo.”
The D’Luxe model offers a concierge design experience, allowing buyers to customize their homes with the in-house design team. The Luxe has also partnered with Est Est Interior Design, one of Scottsdale’s most prominent firms, to offer complimentary furniture design consultations to all buyers.
“Buyers of the D’Luxe model have the option to fully customize their condominium if they get in early enough,” said Alissa Becker, Luxe design manager. “From material selections to the build-out of two large closets and the pantry to the wine area and built-in bar in the dining room. We also love the option to add a two-way outdoor fireplace on the expansive patio to give the primary bedroom its own secluded patio space. This floorplan is one-of-a-kind, and it’s going to be exciting to see what buyers do to make each home their own.”

New details enhance the luxurious living experience at The Luxe, including smart home technology, living room gas fireplace, double built-in ovens, natural gas burner cooktop, upgraded quartz countertops, frameless cabinets, spacious laundry room, soft water system, and expansive indoor/outdoor living areas.
UNCOMPROMISING OPTIONS FOR CUSTOMIZATION INCLUDE:
• Outdoor cooking with sink
• Wine room and wet bar
• Flex space with barn door
• Linear primary bedroom fireplace
• Outdoor linear or two-way fireplace
• Beverage refrigerator
• Extra refrigerator or freezer
• Laundry sink
• Two customizable primary closets
With only six available and prices starting at just under $2 million, the D’Luxe expansive condo homes are anticipated to sell quickly.
Since welcoming its first residents in 2022, The Luxe has set a new standard for luxury living in Phoenix by investing more than $400,000 in sound mitigation assemblies to ensure unparalleled privacy and tranquility in every home. Nearing its final phase, The Luxe will be complete with 223 homes distributed among six buildings, offering a selection of two-, three-, and three-bedroom plus den residences ranging from 1,600 to 4,000 square feet.

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!

HI, MY NAME IS… Alison Walsh
I’VE LIVED IN DESERT RIDGE FOR 11 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the conveniences of so many amazing hiking and biking trails at Reach 11, shops and restaurants, activities for the family like the Musical Instrument Museum and it’s also convenient to get to Scottsdale, which is where I was born and raised. I love the restaurants on High Street and visit Humble Bistro more than I care to admit.
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… shuttling my two boys to school and all of their activities like flag football and the ninja gym. I work for a local public relations agency, so I
tend to have a lot of calls, events, media interviews and in-person meetings throughout the day as well. My husband and I also love walking our two Olde English Bulldogges, Biscuit and Waffles, around the neighborhood.
MY FAMILY IS… my everything. I’m so lucky to have a husband who loves to cook, two healthy and rambunctious elementary school-aged sons, and both my mom, my in-laws, my sister and my sister-in-law all live nearby. We spend a lot of time together. There are six children all under the age of 12 and it’s the best kind of chaos.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my phone. I’m running around town all day, and I can check email on the go! I also take way too many photos of my kids and my dogs.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Home Alone”. It’s just such a classic and I miss the ‘90s era of movie production, when things were more innocent. And John Hughes was simply the best!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A Chicago Cubs baseball player. I guess that wasn’t in the cards for me, but public relations is a pretty fun second choice.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Nobody should be punished with having to endure my
singing, but “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks is definitely my favorite.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my mom. She worked very hard when my sister and I were young to provide us with so many opportunities to play sports, attend private school and she and my dad were the most supportive parents I could imagine having. The memories of our annual beach vacation in San Diego will be with me forever.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… an Instagram reel from one my favorite parenting influencers. Go check out @bigtimeadulting for a good laugh, especially if you’re a mom.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… March in Arizona, sitting outside at a Spring Training baseball game – especially if it’s the Chicago Cubs!
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Maggie’s Place. They are a wonderful resource for pregnant moms in need. They’re currently in need of Halloween costumes and they can always use diapers, of course!
MY LIFE IS… a gift. I try to remember that every day, and to help others when I can – with my hands and with my wallet. Giving to others in need brings me joy and I want my sons to see that too. They love volunteering at Feed My
Starving Children and that makes me really happy.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… That’s a tough one to answer! I would say a very special trip. Memories made on vacation with the people you care about the most are priceless.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… The Maldives. I dream of staying in an over-the-water bungalow.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… Good things come to those who aren’t afraid to try. (Not to those who wait). There will never be the “perfect” time to do something. You just have to make it happen.

Young soulmates say ‘I do’ at Ryan House
By Lin Sue Flood
Couples often spend months, if not years, planning their nuptials. But there was no such luxury for Jovani Colmenero and Kaylie Garcia. Time was especially precious because the groom was a 20-year-old with late-stage cancer.
Jovani has battled bone cancer since the age of 16. As the disease progressed, Hospice of the Valley provided compassionate comfort care in his home. Eventually, he moved to Ryan House, which offers round-the-clock clinical support.
The young couple envisioned a small gathering to celebrate their unconditional love. They were overwhelmed when Hospice of the Valley’s pediatric inpatient unit and other care team members rallied to create the wedding of their dreams.
The agency’s Helping Hand Fund covered a catered dinner from Ajo Al’s. The wedding bands, bridal gown, tuxedo shirt, flowers and dessert were all donated. Ryan House home health aide Alexundria Fernandez provided hair and makeup, while Hospice of the Valley videographer Delbert Vega captured stunning photos of the ceremony. The marriage was conducted in Spanish by Hospice of the Valley chaplain Frank Macias in Ryan House’s sanctuary, transformed into a cozy pink chapel in honor of the bride’s favorite color.
“They got us a priest, a gown, shoes, his clothes, décor… everything! When I arrived, everything looked beautiful! I wasn’t expecting this — it exceeded all my expectations,” Kaylie said.

“I feel like the happiest man on Earth,” Jovani said. “When I look at her, I look at the love of my life.”
Jovani is Kaylie’s first boyfriend. They met in 2022 at a party, seven months before he became ill.
“I admire how strong he is. He taught me things that I would never think I’d learn,” said Kaylie, also 20. “When I see him, I feel really lucky. Jovani knows how to make a difficult moment a happy moment. In him, I see happiness and love, and that’s what I need. This is what true love is — being together during the happy times and the hard times. He is my angel.”
“And vice versa,” Jovani added. “How many people would stand by someone in my situation?”
After the ceremony, Jovani’s dad, German, struggled to convey his appreciation. “I don’t have words for this. I’m very grateful to the nurses, the doctors, the entire staff.”
A sentiment echoed by Kaylie’s mom, Lorena. “Every single person in here projects confidence, kindness and, above all, love.”
Jovani’s care team was deeply touched by the couples’ commitment. “There was a point in the ceremony where Giovanni looked at Kaylie and I know it took a lot of his strength to give her that smile,” Ryan House nurse and team leader Karena Fisher recalled. “It gave me comfort to know that he will always cherish that memory. That’s what we wanted to give Jovanni.”
Lin Sue Flood is director of Community Engagement at Hospice of the Valley. To learn more about programs and services, visit hov.org.
Family members helped the couple celebrate their special day.
Kaylie and Jovanni were overwhelmed with gratitude for their dream wedding.

When Life Changes, Your Estate Plan Might Change Too
By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
Change is inevitable. With estate planning, you put in place the best plan you can at the time. However, as your life proceeds, and the law twists and turns, your plan may need an update. So when should you review –and possibly renew – your estate plan?

One change that can make a difference in your plan isn’t even something you might know about. Federal or state law may change, and your plan might need to be adjusted to address the new laws.
For example, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, changing the former trust law completely. If your Trust was put in place before 2008, you need a review, because the law on which it was based is now very different.
The federal estate tax exemption has changed over the years as well. The exemption (what you can give away in life and at death without taxes) has been as low as $600,0000, but is now over $13 Million (but goes down to $6 to $7 Million in 2026). If your estate plan was done when the exemption was low, your plan may be far more complex than you need now. A simpler plan may make it easier for your surviving spouse and children. If your estate plan was done when your net worth was much less, you may need to think about planning for estate tax avoidance.
THE BIG FOUR OF LIFE EVENTS –MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, BIRTH AND DEATH
It seems obvious that if you get married or divorced, you need to change your plan. When you leave a marriage, leave the old estate plan and replace it with a new plan. On marrying, don’t forget to change the plan you did before marriage. I’ve also had to console the spouse who finds out too late that her husband failed

to adjust his plan, and didn’t change his life insurance or IRA beneficiaries.
The birth of a child is also an occasion to change your plan or put one in place if you haven’t done so yet. You need to protect that life you brought into the world. Protection includes making sure things are in place for their care if you are no longer here.
MOVING FROM STATE TO STATE
Another significant life event is a move to another state. While your attorney in your old state may have done a fine job, it is important to be sure that your new home state doesn’t have laws that affect your plan adversely. A local attorney can advise you about whether your existing plan requires changes.
A REVIEW EVERY THREE TO FIVE YEARS
I recommend that my clients review their trusts with me every three to five years. That way, we can discuss any changes in their lives and in the law and update to be sure the plan is what is needed.

Why Your Shoulder Hurts At Night (and How to Finally Get Relief)
By Shoulder Pain Expert, Dr. Matthew Hernandez, Ethos Integrative Medicine
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
You’ve seen everyone for shoulder pain, and are still left without solutions. You’ve tried therapeutic massages but it came back (or worse, aggravated it), chiropractic care only offered temporary relief, your physical therapist put you on the same exercises as everyone, the pain management doctor did a nerve ablation and told you to stop being active, and the orthopedic surgeon told you that you weren’t a surgical candidate…
When you’re experiencing shoulder pain all day, it’s no surprise that you would turn to sleep for relief. But when sleeping seated in a chair becomes as bad as lying on your side, it’s time to solve the mystery of your shoulder pain.
Unfortunately, for many on the quest to conquering discomfort, their only option from healthcare providers is to
“wait until it gets worse.” Here’s what they don’t want you to know: You can actually get relief now.
SHOULDER PAIN WHILE SLEEPING
Irene, who had been dealing with shoulder pain for six months, came to us for this exact reason. She didn’t want to resort to temporary cortisone injections, daily sleeping pills, or pain medication. She wanted a long-term solution.
“The worst part was not being able to sleep at night.” Despite three months of physical therapy, her improvement was minimal. An orthopedic surgeon also diagnosed her with a rotator cuff injury, but told her she needed to wait for it to get worse to consider surgery.
GETTING RELIEF AND FINALLY SOME SLEEP
Recognizing Irene’s frustration, we swiftly took action, confirming her rotator cuff tear, and identifying a second injury in her shoulder that was contributing to her pain.

We explained to Irene how she had fallen into what we call “The Gap” in conventional medicine, and how regenerative medicine bridges this gap. Irene chose to partner with us and underwent two treatments. In just four weeks, her pain had improved significantly, allowing her to finally get a good night’s sleep.
HOW OUR DEEP DIVE BRIDGES “THE GAP”
Irene’s story is not uncommon; applying a one-size-fits-all approach left her without clear guidance or solutions. You don’t need to wait until it gets worse!
With our comprehensive Deep Dive (which includes our Pain Profile, 32-Point Shoulder Inspection, Precision Shoulder Scan, and Diagnostic Mapping Technique — all of which were used to confirm Irene’s pain and guide her treatment strategy), we’ll not only get YOU an accurate diagnosis (and explain it to you!), but will also provide you with a personalized treatment

plan to effectively treat your pain and prevent it from coming back.
If you’ve been wondering, ‘why does my shoulder hurt at night?’ and are eager for answers, call 480-573-6171 to schedule your Deep Dive for a Pain-Free Shoulder with our specialists at Ethos Integrative Medicine, and scan the QR code below to access our FREE report, “Shoulder SOS: The Expert Guide to Decoding Your Pain.”

EXPERIENCE THE FREEDOM OF A PAIN-FREE SHOULDER:
1. Ethos Pain Profile: Is designed to identify the specific characteristics of your pain, so we can pinpoint exactly where it’s coming from.
2. 32-Point Shoulder Inspection: Your pain bothers you during specific movements. Our 32-Point Shoulder Inspection allows us to replicate those painful movements so we are one step closer to eliminating them.
3. Precision Shoulder Scan: Our advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound exam gives a detailed, real-time view of your shoulder’s structures, providing more accuracy than a regular MRI.
4. Ethos Pain Map: This is a specialized method to confirm the exact source of pain in your body. This detailed approach helps us create a personalized strategy, increasing your likelihood of long-term success.
5. Easy-To-Understand Explanation: We skip the complex terms and offer you a direct, honest breakdown of your diagnosis.
6. Leave You Better Promise: If by the end of the visit you do not have a better understanding of your pain or what your options are moving forward we will give you a full refund on your visit.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS

“Strange Darling”
The final attack of one of the 21st century’s most prolific serial killers reenacted in great detail.
“Strange Darling” is the perfect example of homage without being derivative, even if it does get a little self indulgent at times. Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner are astonishing here as two multilayered individuals who continuously surprise you with their actions. It’s a gorgeous film that harkens back to the mood of low budget cinema of the 70s but still has its own identity with the camerawork and editing. There are some aspects of the film that could be cut to make the film’s plot more surprising, but it still feels like a natural progression. Most impressively, it makes the most of its resources without feeling showy, which is an issue with a lot of “homage cinema.”
“Blink Twice”
A vacation to a billionaire’s island becomes a nightmare for a group of women.
It’s an ambitious debut for director Zoë Kravitz, one that doesn’t pull any punches. At the same time, there’s a sense that some of the decisions hold the film back from its full potential. Perhaps some of the choices, such as the over reliance of glamorous, but empty, imagery and repetitive storytelling, is the point; but there are better ways to execute those ideas. And without spoiling, the ending seems to throw out the ideas of abuse of power in favor of a more audience-friendly idea. It’s a movie that one has to respect for its goals and what it does, but it also has many elements that are clearly the result of a first-timer. It will be interesting to see where Kravitz goes from here.
“Alien: Romulus”
In a bid to escape their current lives, a group of young people inadvertently unleash the universe’s greatest terror.
“Alien: Romulus” is frustrating at times because it’s a generally good, at times great, movie that’s held back by an adherence to the past of the series. When it focuses on its own identity, it’s a gripping tale of young people repeating the mistakes of their previous generations to escape the cycle they’ve been forced into. That’s combined with themes of siblinghood and some new set pieces which takes the creatures of the series to a new sense of scale. Unfortunately, the amount of homages to previous films and the desire to feel familiar at the same time holds the film back, whether it’s lines from prior installments or an unfortunate case of CGI dead people. It’s unnecessary, not doing anything for the film or it’s themes, rather detracting from it. And it’s a shame because it is so close
to greatness. This is a well made and entertaining film with a very good cast of newer talent...it just had to be more confident in itself.
ON NETFLIX

“Rebel Ridge”
A former marine finds himself against a small town’s police force following the theft of his bail money.
Jeremy Saulnier returns with a bang in “Rebel Ridge”, a surprising thriller in terms of its approach. Specifically, through how it approaches action, in a violent but not fatal manner which parallels its social commentary. For our lead Terry, played excellently by Aaron Pierre, it’s a world he has to bring down in a manner that is playing fair when it shouldn’t be. Backed by a supporting cast and an excellent use of slow burning tension, it’s the best Netflix original film in a long time. It’s good to know films like this are still being made in the action genre.

Free Community Event! Why You Still Have Sciatica & Back Pain
(And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed.
This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you

pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What to Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Getaway

at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino Dive into Fun
Along the banks of the Colorado River and nestled between surrounding majestic mountains, emerges the picturesque destination named for gaming pioneer Don Laughlin. Founded in 1966, Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, is the town’s first and only family-owned and operated resort. This is Nevada style gaming in a small town atmosphere.
“My grandfather, Don Laughlin, enjoys having a variety of gaming and activities as he doesn’t like to see anyone left out of fun,” said Matt Laughlin, Don Laughlin’s grandson and the Riverside Resort CEO. “If you are interested in table games, we have blackjack, craps, roulette, Three Card Poker, Deuces Wild, Ultimate Texas Hold ’em, Let it Ride, Mississippi Stud, Face up Pai Gow and more.”
For slot lovers, there are many variations of Buffalo machines, wheel of fortune, lightning links, Blazing 7’s, plus video poker and four card keno. Be sure not to forget the famous Riverside Poker Room and Bingo Paradise. For those not feeling competitive on the casino floor, there is a 34-lane bowling center, 6-plex movie theater, salon and day spa, USS Riverside boat tour, classic car collection, Don’s Celebrity Theatre indoor showroom, plus two beautiful pools overlooking the river including their south tower adult pool and bar. “We have something for everyone here,” Laughlin said.
Although gaming is one of the biggest draws for many guests, it’s only one of many activities during a stay at the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino. Cool off in the water at the South Tower adults-only pool and bar, overlooking the scenic Colorado River. For visitors with children, check out the north tower family-friendly pool.
Looking for another way to spend some time outdoors? Set sail on the USS Riverside, the resort’s cruise boat that takes guests under the Laughlin Bridge up to the Davis Dam. Guests can feel the wind on the shaded outdoor upper deck or check out the views from the climatecontrolled lower deck. Listen to the narrated history of the Colorado River while cruising during sunset.
