Celebrating 20 Years at Desert Ridge Marketplace The community is welcome to a calendar full of fall events DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE IS CELEBRATING ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A MONTH-LONG CALENDAR OF FALL FUN. During October, guests will be treated to free family fun, giveaways, and no shortage of live entertainment. Desert Ridge Marketplace, located at 21001 N. Tatum Boulevard, celebrates two decades of being the place #WHERELIFEHAPPENS. Guests are invited to help the center swing into its 20s with Deals of the Decade, 20 days of giveaways from favorite brands and a custom photo opp experience with an interactive swing. Locals can enter on the center’s website for a chance to win a pair of tickets to see The Jonas Brothers at Ak-Chin Pavilion on October 26 and a pair of tickets to see Florida Georgia Line on November 11.

It’s starting to look like fall at Desert Ridge Marketplace. The third annual Pumpkin Patch returns to The District near AMC Theatres from October 15 through October 31. Pick the perfect pumpkin (while supplies last), snap a seasonal photo, and enjoy free face painting and balloon twisting on select dates. Then on October 22, venture out to the center from 6 to 8 p.m. for an evening of spooky surprises during Creepy Candy Crawl. Music to Our Ears: Lakeshore Music Moves to the new Ravenscroft Hall THE NORTH SCOTTSDALE JAZZ MUSIC SCENE IS GETTING A NEW NEIGHBOR. Lakeshore Music, which has grown into one of the most-respected jazz concert series in the U.S. during its 12 seasons at Tempe Center for the Arts, is moving to Ravenscroft Hall, a beautiful new state-of-the-art venue in North Scottsdale. The nine-concert season, which opens October 16, runs through May 2022. Tickets, with a variety of packages and pricing, are on sale at lakeshoremusic.org.

“It’s an exciting new beginning for us in an area thirsting for cultural activity and live music,” says Woody Wilson, Lakeshore Music founder and president. “It has been a long and painful ordeal since February of 2020 when we were forced into shutdown by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ravenscroft, at 8445 E. Hartford Drive in the Scottsdale Perimeter Complex, just off Loop 101 at Princess Drive, is a 30,000-square-foot campus with a music venue and multi-use space. Its Ravenscroft Hall is an intimate 200-seat concert venue. The campus includes Jazzbird, a first-class jazz lounge, which, starting Fridays this month, will host music from popular and up-and-coming local musicians accompanied by a fine selection of wine and local craft beers.

Barron, a National Endowment for the Arts and American Jazz Hall of Fame pianist, opens the building on October 16 with an already sold-out performance. Cuban pianist Harold Lopéz-Nussa, whose work reflects the range and richness of Cuban music and its embrace of jazz improvisation and interaction, is up next on October 30.

City News The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Returns October 23 at WestWorld of Scottsdale Photos Courtesy of Dave Seibert THE BENTLEY SCOTTSDALE POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS: PRESENTED BY TALKING STICK RESORT IS ONCE AGAIN MAKING HISTORY. On Saturday, October 23, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, attendees can start the day with a brand-new field-side Scottsdale Morning Beer Festival from 10 a.m. to noon. The Polo Party will also debut DJ MPower who will be spinning his electric house music sets in various tents, alongside several of the Valley’s top DJs. The 22-year-old inspiration with Down syndrome has overcome many challenges to DJ on a professional level. Also entertaining on site is jazz musician Doc Jones and acoustic guitarists. As always, fans can expect to see four thrilling and action-packed polo matches. Since its inception, the event has traditionally brought in many of the world’s most talented and notable polo stars. It is only fitting for 2021 that polo fans will see the return of GQ model and undoubtedly one of America’s best players,

Nic Roldan, who returns representing the former champion Aspen Valley Polo Club, owned by Marc and Melissa Ganzi. Roldan’s team will go head-to-head with La Mariposa Argentina Polo Club. La Mariposa is making its first appearance in the event. Among the other new teams that are also scheduled to play include the Grand Champions Polo Club and the Jet Set Woman’s All-Stars. Also newly expanded for this year: retired NFL star AC Caswell will once again bring his Million Dollar Mingle charity experience to the event with an even larger VIP presence on site. City News Holland Center Presents 2nd Annual Glass Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser OVER THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 22-24, THE HOLLAND CENTER WILL CELEBRATE THE HALLOWEEN SEASON WITH ITS 2ND ANNUAL GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, this festive event will showcase over 1,000 whimsical, vibrantly colored glass pumpkins handmade by Gregory Tomb, an acclaimed local glass artist known for his unique, intricate designs. These one-of-a-kind works of art will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Holland Center, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing arts, education and community in the Desert Foothills region. ABOUT THE ARTIST Artist Gregory Tomb has been fascinated by glass art since childhood when his family’s frequent road trips would often include visits to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. After studying glassblowing as an art student at Hartwick College, Tomb explored a variety of personal and professional interests — but glass art always remained his passion. He

occasionally rented glass studio time over the years and began honing his craft as a production glassblower in a factory for world-renowned glass maker Simon Pearce. In 2014, he started participating in juried art shows nationwide. Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival, and the Scottsdale Artfest. For the next three years, he will serve as artist-in-residence for the Town of Johnsburg, N.Y., where he will facilitate classes for over 500 students each summer. In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flameworked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light. Since 2013, he has taught glassblowing at the Bay Area Glass Institute, as well as through lessons from his own mobile studio. Tomb’s colorful autumnal creations celebrate the season and have been featured in museums and magazines around the country. THE HOLLAND CENTER As a former artist-in-residence at the Holland Center, Tomb is excited to share the joy and beauty of glass art with the Desert Foothills community. Located in North Scottsdale, the Holland Center is a unique partnership dedicated to celebrating arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need, and encouraging lifelong learning. ecently a client asked whether his Revocable Living Trust (RLT) would protect his assets from his creditors. The answer is no. While the RLT is a great estate planning and probate avoidance tool, it is not an asset protection trust.

Giving the inheritance in trust could have protected the inheritance from the bankruptcy creditors and could have given him a fresh start.

TRUSTS CAN PROTECT THE INHERITANCE IN CASE OF YOUR BENEFICIARY’S DIVORCE OR DEATH My client liked the idea of the irrevocable trust and asked me about protecting his daughter’s inheritance from her husband. The marriage was rocky, and he was concerned about what would happen if she decided to divorce after getting her inheritance.

I told him that while his RLT didn’t protect him from his debts, we could structure the inheritance for his children to protect them – and not just from potential creditors. We do this by directing in the RLT that each beneficiary receives their share in their own irrevocable trust. TRUSTS CAN KEEP AN INHERITANCE OUT OF THE HANDS OF CREDITORS The beneficiaries’ trusts do give them asset protection. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. For instance, in 2008, Son started a business, but in the economic downturn, the business failed. He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing, Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It

I explained that if his daughter received her inheritance in trust, it could prevent her from losing part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the daughter and not her husband.

I told him the irrevocable trust can provide protection for beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well, whether due to addiction issues or just being bad with money. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust provides that the trustee can make discretionary distributions to the beneficiary for their health, education, maintenance, and support.

We’ve helped over 7,000 Arizona households across our state switch to solar and benefit from affordable and reliable clean energy that also addresses climate change. Fortunately, this month, Congress is taking up critical infrastructure legislation that can make the urgent investments we need to promote solar energy in our state. Local solar companies need long-term stability to grow and sustain our businesses. Policies like the Solar Investment Tax Credit can encourage more solar energy installations by reducing taxes for Arizonans that go solar. Extending this policy for ten years gives businesses like ours the green light to hire more people to meet the demand, bringing new jobs to the Phoenix area. We also need more support to encourage domestic manufacturing so we can make more solar components here at home. Investing in solar production capacity will only lead to more employment in our state, and as we create these jobs, that means more opportunities to diversify our workforce and provide high-paying careers for women, people of color, and workers transitioning from the fossil fuel industry. That’s why it’s so critical for Congress to pass strong pro-solar legislation. We have an incredible opportunity to boost our economy, fight climate change, and create well-paying jobs for families in our state. Failing to pass these provisions in the upcoming infrastructure legislation could have catastrophic outcomes that means less prosperity in our state. And with frightening reports that indicate Phoenix might be unlivable by the end of the century due to extreme heat, we need to do everything we can to curb the impacts of the climate crisis. We urge Congress to pass infrastructure legislation that sets the country forward towards a bright clean energy future. eal estate is a hot topic, and it seems like everyone is interested in real estate data, which means there is a lot of gossip and “talk” about real estate. A lot of that talk can become exaggerated or modified to make the stories sound better at cocktail parties or when you bump into friends and neighbors on a walk or at the mailbox. Through the old game of ‘telephone,’ these stories get more and more ‘modified’ as time passes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been at the grocery store or a restaurant and I

see a client or neighbor who tells me about the “house down the street that sold for xyz price in xyz hours and had xyz offers” and I happen to know the details of the real estate transaction and much of the rumor is simply wrong. Everything from the days on market, to the price, to how much over list price, to all the repairs needed can often be wrong. I’ve heard countless stories that just don’t have the facts straight at all. So, we implore you: don’t let gossip influence what you believe your home is worth and impact your real estate decisions. Instead, rely on the data and a trusted real estate professional to guide you through the process. Another popular topic of conversation relates to financed versus cash buyers. nderstanding Arizona’s Open Enrollment process and how it works can be challenging. Open Enrollment allows parents to apply for admission to any public school as long as there is classroom space available. Each school district develops its own Open Enrollment policies, which are then approved by its governing board. So, why would parents choose to enroll their child into a school other than their home school? Parents choose to open enroll their child in PVSchools for a variety of different reasons such as unique program offerings, teaching philosophy, extracurricular activities, or a closer proximity to work.

Jan. 21. Applications received during this time frame will be processed and accepted and/or denied based on remaining space availability at the requested school. Please note that there may be additional closures by Dec. 2. Applicants will be notified via email in February. • After Jan. 21, you may go directly to the school of your choice to enroll your child. Students are accepted based on availability. • The Early Bird Round is not first come, first served. Everyone applying from now through Dec. 2 has the same opportunity for acceptance. • Open Enrollment applications will only be accepted via the online form.

At PVSchools, the Open Enrollment period for the next school year (2022-23) runs through Jan. 21, 2022.

MOVIE REVIEWS Malignant

Shang-Chi is a story about the scars that family leaves behind. Bolstered by Simu Liu and Tony Leung’s performances, the title character and his father Wenwu are at the heart of the film and deliver some of the best scenes from the film. When the film focuses on these themes, it’s great, but it staggers when it doesn’t. Its comedy particularly is grating, with most coming from Awkwafina’s supporting character that we are unfortunately forced to hang out with most of the movie. Action-wise it is better than previous films. Despite the usual problems with superhero movies, there’s still enough good in this film to make the watch worthwhile. In theaters. Kate

A figure from a woman’s past comes back and begins a murder spree, which she finds herself tangled into. Malignant is James Wan’s unapologetic love letter to horror. Combining the tones of classic Giallo films with underground 90s horror, we have a psychological/ slasher/slight body horror feature, which masterfully balances scares, excitement and even humor (if sometimes unintentional). With such striking visuals and effective gore, as well as an incredibly committed performance by Annabelle Wallis, Wan transports you into a demented world, and it’s a ride that will not stop until the end. It’s very much not for everyone, especially if you’re not familiar with the more specific parts of horror this review is referencing. But if you can get along with it, it’s a blast. An ex-marine, living a free life of poker playing to cope with a haunted past, finds himself having to face it once the son of a man he knew asks for his help in a dangerous plan. A quiet, patient film, like many of Paul Schrader’s previous films, The Card Counter is about a lonely man, content with his current existence, if still clearly hiding his pain. It’s the lead performance by Oscar Isaac that sells this movie. He subtly shows a range from pained to scary as he portrays William Tell. His character is so interesting that he actually overshadows the other characters, despite the best efforts of the other actors. It’s a very uncomfortable film with disturbing imagery and dark subjects, but if you can be able to stomach it, you will be rewarded. In theaters. Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings After ten years apart, a young man must fight against his father to save the world. A surprising work from Marvel,

posts, without any thought put into it. The actors try their best, but there’s only so much one can do with paper-thin characters like these. The neon drenched sights have become tiresome in this genre by now, offering nothing more than “Look at how cool this place is!”, instead of mood or tension. A potentially great film that can’t get past itself in its desire to be a John Wick clone. On Netflix.
