continued need to address COVID-19, the center has proactively implemented health and safety practices for the Fall Concert Series. The operations plan for the series is based on CDC guidelines and has been reviewed and approved by the City of Scottsdale, Scottsdale Police Department, and Scottsdale Fire Department. Scottsdale Quarter’s already rigorous disinfectant and cleaning practices will continue, and the following additional measures will be implemented for the concert series: • Designated seating areas in varying sizes will be clearly marked on the grass and concrete and spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart. Guests are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs and blankets to place within available designated seating areas. Sitting or standing will not be permitted outside of designated areas within the event perimeter during the concert. • Masks are required unless actively eating or drinking unless otherwise exempted by local ordinance. Disposable masks will be provided free of charge for those who need one. • Hand sanitizing stations will be available inside the event and at both public restroom entrances. • Floor decals will be placed in areas where lines may form, including outside of the public restrooms. Additionally, the shopping center asks all guests to conduct themselves in a safe and respectful way in accordance with the updated Code of Conduct as well as all laws and local ordinances. City News Slider Throwdown Moves to High Street for Burger Battle on November 8 Photos by Joanie Simon ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, THE 2020 SLIDER THROWDOWN IS SET TO TAKE OVER HIGH STREET FOR THIS ANNUAL “BATTLE OF THE BURGER” BENEFITTING THE ARIZONA FRIENDS OF FOSTER CHILDREN FOUNDATION (AFFCF). chicken, veggie, and more — from some of the Valley’s most popular food trucks, all in the name of helping the AFFCF’s mission to support local foster children in need, in a COVID-19 friendly event environment.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving foster children the opportunity for “normal” childhoods and prepare them for successful adulthoods through programming and scholarships. The AFFCF needs the community’s help to continue this important work for the more than 13,000 children currently in foster care in the state. City News Jack is Back! EARLIER THIS YEAR, LOCAL BUSINESSES ACROSS THE STATE PAUSED OPERATIONS AS A MATTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE MIDST OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. Among those businesses was Barbershop Jack, a fixture in the North Phoenix community. “It was a simple matter of priorities,” says owner Don Benaglio. “And topping the priority list is the health of our customers, staff, and the community.” For the seven weeks their doors were shut, the crew at Barbershop Jack spent time with their respective families. Benaglio says that his team experienced the same ups and downs as other families across the state. While they found the extra time with loved ones to be a blessing, home quarantine was not without its challenges. They hunted for toilet paper and hand sanitizer. They changed the way they buy groceries. And the time away from the gym might have added a few extra pounds on the scale. The barbers also realized just how much they missed seeing friends, neighbors, and clients. Following Governor Doug Ducey’s announcement authorizing the reopening of barbershops and hair salons, their doors opened once again for haircuts and shaves. (Plans are in the works for reintroducing their full complement of offerings, including spa services and teeth whitening). There was some initial concern about whether clients would come back after the lockdown ended. Not only did their clients return, but

they also made a big statement: Barbershop Jack was just voted Best Barbershop in the Valley for 2020. More than 400,000 votes were cast during the “Best Of” voting process.

NATHAN DELAFIELD, AN INTERNAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN WORKING AT VALLEYWISE HEALTH AND RESIDENT OF THE DESERT RIDGE AREA, IS VERY FAMILIAR WITH. As an eight-year-old, Delafield entered the foster care system where he remained until he was 21. It is in those formative years where he witnessed the struggles of many around him to gain access to affordable, quality health care. This experience fueled his passion to return to the community that he came from and provide healthcare, compassion, and education. Growing up in the shadows of Valleywise Health Medical Center in Central Phoenix living in a hotel at 24th Street and Van Buren for a portion of his childhood, Dr. Delafield realized early on that his interest in science coupled with his drive to improve his circumstances, may land him in the halls of that hospital where he now works. As a 21-year-old exiting the foster system, Delafield was a ward of the state after his 18th birthday, which allowed him to receive the resources needed to complete his undergraduate degree at ASU and then attend medical school at Indiana University. In navigating a turbulent system and coming out the other side as a physician, he is an instant role model to those he serves. “For many growing up in the foster system, hope for a better future seems impossible,” says Dr. Delafield. “I decided that I never wanted to be consumed by the environment and become another statistic, so I leveraged the resources available to me to get a great education and make my dream a reality where I can now make an impact, one patient at a time.” Further, as an African-American physician, he believes that racial diversity in health care is critical to overcome disparities in healthcare that disproportionately impact minority communities. “After completing my residency at Mayo Clinic, I could have worked anywhere, but with Valleywise Health and the renewed vision of the safety-net system, I knew I would be able to impact patients that come from similar environments that I came from,” says Dr. Delafield. “Having that empathy from experience to know these patients may be facing food scarcity, homelessness or come from a home with domestic violence, I feel I can better assist them with their health care needs and hopefully make them feel recognized and heard.”

To give a hand up to those currently in the foster system, Dr. Delafield also dedicates time as a board member for the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation which gifts roughly $1M annually in scholarships, resources and extracurricular funds to children in the Arizona state foster care system. City News Four-Legged Friend Carries On Legacy of Fallen Phoenix Police Officer KRISTEN AND DAVE GLASSER HAD BIG DREAMS. The dog lovers were building a life together with their two young kids. Milo was the newest member of the family. “We loved dogs,” Kristen says as she fought tears. “We had plans some day to have tons of dogs.” But in May 2016, that dream was shattered when Phoenix Police Officer Dave Glasser was killed in the line of duty. “After Dave passed, it was hard,” Kristen says. “And two very large young dogs was a lot to take care of. I tried and tried and tried, but we moved to be closer to my family, which came with a much smaller back yard than he was used to. And it just got to the point where it was more than I could take care of by myself.” Kristen made the difficult decision to rehome Milo. She was put in touch with Myla Marovich, the communications supervisor at the Phoenix Police Communications Bureau. Myla fell in love with Milo, and with names so similar, it seemed like it was meant to be. She took

Milo into her home, and not long after, decided to bring him into the office. “Milo became our support K-9 in March and that was kind of right at the beginning of things kind of turning to the hectic 2020 that we’re in right now,” Marovich explains. “It was perfect timing and, right now, it means the world to all of us to have him here.” Milo was sponsored and trained through The Fetch Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Once Milo had his K-9 Good Citizen certification, he started work at the Phoenix Police Department. Milo roams the Communications Bureau during the work week, giving and getting love — something he comes by quite naturally.

“It has been a challenging time for everyone, and as a community, we have the ability to come together and support a very important group of artists and small businesses,” the organizers of the event wrote in an recent e-mail to patrons. “We will have booths outside, socially distanced walkways, live music, and the High Street restaurants along with House of Comedy will welcome you to dine, drink and laugh during your myhyperlocalnews.com

“You always want to find a reason for things,” Kristen explains. “And just him, kind of finding his purpose through all of this, I feel like this is where he was kind of destined to be. And what he was destined to do. And we were just a little story along that way. And bigger picture for me, that just gives me hope that through all this, there is a bigger story being written. Giving him up was one of the hardest things I did, so to see that come into a positive thing is...it gives me hope that there is more positive to come.”

Teaching Kids How to Navigate the Kitchen By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

T

he holiday season is fast approaching, which makes this a great time of year to start giving your kids some practical life skills by helping you in the kitchen. Getting your kids involved in the holiday food preparation is a great way to bond and pass on your traditions for celebrating. BENEFITS OF COOKING WITH CHILDREN One of the biggest benefits to having your kids help you in the kitchen is that you are teaching them about food and nutrition. Learning about food helps you learn how to eat right, handle food safely, and be healthier. In fact, studies show that people who regularly eat meals prepared at home are more likely to be healthier – and happier. When you eat less sugar and avoid processed foods, you typically have more energy, a healthier immune system, and overall better mental health as a result. Research shows that people who eat home-cooked meals at least five or more days a week tend to live longer lives, too. Cooking with your kids is also a great way to help them grow and develop. From improving vocabulary, math, and fine motor skills, to teaching your kids critical life skills so they will be able to take care of themselves as adults, cooking is an important way to help kids to become healthier and more independent.

HELPING IN THE KITCHEN Kids get hands on learning while helping in the kitchen because, as you cook, you are actively teaching them by showing them what to do. Cooking improves vocabulary by labeling ingredients as you go, reading to understand and follow recipes and instructions, math by counting and measuring ingredients, and following directions by listening to your instruction. There are many ways for kids to help you in the kitchen. You can encourage your child’s interest in cooking by giving them different age-appropriate activities. Whether they stir batter, measure a cup of ingredients, knead dough, roll out cookies, or crack eggs, they are developing skills that will help them learn how to cook as they grow. Here are a few ideas to get your kids helping in the kitchen, no matter what age they are: • Let kids punch and knead dough for yeast breads • Have kids cream butter and sugar by squishing it with their hands • Allow kids to measure ingredients and pour them into the recipe with your guidance • Let your kids draw designs in extra flour (put down parchment or wax paper first) • Add food coloring to different recipes to help kids learn about colors and mixing

• Let your kids decorate cookies and cupcakes with frosting, sprinkles, candy, or other treats • Show your kids how to crimp the edges of a pie and let them do it for you • Put ingredients into a re-sealable bag and let your kid mix it with their hands • Ask kids to help you figure out how to double or half a recipe before measuring • Find no-bake recipes and help your kids walk through making the food from beginning to end The level of help in the kitchen should be based on your child’s age and ability. Younger kids have fun watching and playing, while older children want to be more hands on and participate in making the final product. You know your child best, so think about what they are ready for when you get ready cook. ating back to as early as 2007, numerous research studies and countless news sources have covered the story of filthy shopping carts and their potential for transferring dangerous microbes and diseases to shoppers. In fact, some of those studies suggested that a shopping cart carries more germs than a public toilet seat. Until now, shoppers have dealt with these filthy carts by wiping them down with disinfecting wipes or attempting to outsmart germs by pulling the shopping cart by the tail or side rails—a fruitless endeavor given the research. But thanks to an ingenious and simple idea by a Scottsdale mom, all of that is about to change. CartSafe was created by Andi Barness-Rubin, a working mother of three boys who was frustrated with the thought of going to the grocery store and trying to keep germs off of herself and her food. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she would always wipe the handle of the shopping cart with a storeprovided sanitizing wipe (when they were even available), but once the novel coronavirus began to spread, she starting thinking about all of the germs that were not only on the handle, but also all over the inside and outside of the cart. Frustrated by having to wipe down her entire cart, she came up with an idea that she knew would simplify her ability to keep herself and her family safe. s Arizona prepares for influenza season amid COVID-19, Governor Doug Ducey recently issued an Executive Order extending the Enhanced Surveillance Advisory for COVID-19 and adding new influenza reporting requirements for health care facilities. Arizona’s Enhanced Surveillance Advisory, established by Executive Order 2020-13 in March, required hospitals, testing laboratories and other health care facilities to report detailed information about COVID-19 cases, health care capacity, and more. This most recent order extends the COVID-19 reporting requirements and further strengthens the ability of the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) to respond to COVID-19 during influenza season this year. “COVID-19 and influenza season pose a dual threat to Arizona this year,” says Governor Ducey. “That’s why it is so important to get your flu shot and continue making responsible choices, such as masking up and staying physically distant. We are committed to keeping Arizonans healthy and safe throughout influenza season, and we will continue our state’s around-theclock efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect public health.” “Our team remains committed to doing everything we can to fight the spread of COVID-19,” says ADHS Director Dr. Cara Christ. “The

enhanced surveillance advisory has been critical to our awareness of COVID-19 in Arizona, allowing us to understand the situation throughout the state and respond effectively.” To better understand and fight the spread of COVID-19, the advisory has required hospitals in Arizona to report daily statistics on staff resources, ventilator availability, intensive care unit (ICU) bed availability, inpatient bed availability, personal protective equipment (PPE) supply levels, medical supply levels, and more. KNOW THE RISK FACTORS While most breast cancer cases can’t be linked to a specific cause, there are a few known risk factors to be aware of. • Age: As you get older, your risk of breast cancer increases. Most cases are found in women over the age of 50. However, we are seeing breast cancer more and more in younger women. • Personal History: If you have had breast cancer in the past, your chances of developing cancer again are higher.

• Family History: If a direct relative like a mother, sister or daughter has developed breast cancer, or other type of cancer, this increases your risk. • Genetic Factors: The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are genetic mutations that greatly increase the chance of developing breast cancer. There are other genes as well that increase your risk, so if you have a family history of breast cancer, genetic testing may be indicated. EARLY DETECTION IS KEY As with any cancer, early detection greatly increases the chance of beating cancer. There are a few different methods that, when done in combination, are the best tools to see early stages of cancer. Regularly examining your breast is a great place to start. While examining, look for any swelling, soreness, lumps or changes in the shape or size. Anything abnormal should be brought to your doctor’s attention for further examination. The most important findings are

hard, immobile masses, and indentations of the skin. Also examine yourself standing, laying, and leaning over forward, as skin retraction can be more prominent in one position vs. another. Mammograms are one of the most important screening methods for women over the age of 40 as it can detect signs of cancer up to two years before a tumor can be felt. The X-ray can see tiny white dots, or micro-calcifications, which can be a sign of breast cancer. Another technique that works well for younger women with more dense breasts or implants employs quantitative transmission ultrasound, also known as a QT Ultrasound. It provides a much clearer view and provides images more like an MRI. Women at high risk should consider yearly mammograms along with ultrasounds starting at 30. TECHNIQUES ARE IMPROVING If you do develop breast cancer, take heart that treatment technologies and

techniques have greatly advanced over the years. Even options for breast reconstruction have advanced like using your own tissue rather than a traditional implant which can improve the feel and shape of the breast. Your plastic surgeon can work closely with you to determine the best option for you. Often, an oncoplastic reconstruction can improve the appearance of the breast. Breast Cancer Awareness month is a great time to educate yourself and make breast health a priority. Consider creating standing annual appointments for the appropriate screening procedures and monthly reminders for self-examination; your body will thank you. Real Estate Holly’s Housing News: What Is My Home Worth? By Holly Henbest

A

re you thinking about selling your home? When we meet with sellers, they typically want to know about the structure of our team, how we market our listings, our experience and knowledge of the market, but most importantly they want to know: What is my home worth? Often times, sellers are surprised to learn about the value of home features and how they impact the price. For instance, did you know that single story homes sell for a higher price per square foot than two story homes and basement square footage typically sells for less than second story square footage? Did you know that the smaller the house, the higher the price per square foot? If you’re comparing your two story 3,500 square foot home to your neighbor’s single story 1,800 square foot home, the price per square foot will be significantly different.

Location is also a key factor in pricing. Does your home have golf course, mountain or desert open space views? Is it on a cul-de-sac, walking distance to a park, school or community center? Does it back to a busy road, sports field, shopping center or office building? All of these location specifics play a role in how we price your home. Once you compare the location value, it’s time to look at the condition of your home. Is it upgraded? Does it have deferred maintenance needs? Keep in mind that websites that calculate value haven’t seen your home or the one that just sold down the street. Not only does the computer not understand why your location was better or worse, but they haven’t seen your new appliances and flooring or your broken pool equipment or leaky roof. Determining the valuation of your home is a little bit like making a cake. You mix together the values of loca-

tion, upgrades, floor plan, condition, style and the frosting on top – will buyers become emotionally connected to the home? It is often said that home valuation is an art, not a science. It’s a combination of facts and market knowledge. It’s not simply a calculation. When it’s time to list your home for sale, determining the list price and targeted sale price is critical. It’s important to partner with a realtor you can trust to give you the best advice. We’ve lost listing opportunities recently because we always tell sellers what they need to hear and sometimes that doesn’t match what they want to hear. We were interviewed recently for a listing and told the owners what we felt they should list and sell their home for. They opted to select another realtor who told them they could sell their home for $100,000 more. They listed for $100,000 more than we suggested and, after a couple of price reductions

Legal Charitable Giving With Your Estate Plan By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

eptember was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. One of the charities I support, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels (amandahope.org), is an organization supporting children with cancer and their families in a variety of wonderful ways. Working with Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels this past month on their annual gala made me think about how we can give to charities when we do estate plans, benefitting the charity and giving us tax advantages. 1. GIFTS FROM A 401(K) OR TRADITIONAL IRA Your contributions to your 401(k) or IRA are pretax money. You or your individual beneficiary will pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. A charity, on the other hand, will not pay taxes if they are the beneficiary. If you are including a charity in your

estate plan, be sure to consider giving by making them your IRA or 401(k) beneficiary. 2. GIFTING YOUR REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS Another option for giving is to make a direct gift of all or part of your required minimum distributions to the charity. Individuals who are at that point of being required to take RMDs can give up to $100,000 from an IRA to a charity tax free. If you are already making gifts to a charity each year, this can be a way to benefit your charity to a greater extent and save yourself taxes. 3. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to give assets to an irrevocable trust, which provides income to an individual beneficiary for a period of time and gives the remainder of the assets to charity at the end of that time. The trust will permit a donor to claim an immediate charitable deduction for the value of the assets that will ultimately pass to the charity.
