CUTTING-EDGE WATER CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGY TO BE PILOTED IN PHOENIX THE CITY OF PHOENIX WATER SERVICES DEPARTMENT, RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT IS THE RECIPIENT OF AN APPROXIMATELY $100,000 GRANT BY THE U.S. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION FOR AN INNOVATIVE WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM. The grant will allow Phoenix Water, in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), to pilot new technology to reduce lawn water usage between 40 and 45 percent, based on results experienced in California.

“When you live in a desert city, it’s essential to explore innovative ways to conserve water for future generations,” said Phoenix Water Services Director

Kathryn Sorensen. “With the successful completion of the pilot, there is potential to extend the technology to other areas within the City of Phoenix.”

The pilot will be performed on 12 acres of existing soccer fields near ASU-West in Phoenix, owned by the City and ASU. The process involves injecting water-absorbing polymers (known as “hydrogel”) below the root zone of existing turf. The hydrogels can absorb up to 400 percent of their weight in water and release up to 96 percent of the water to the turf, as needed. The injected hydrogels retain the ability of repeating water absorptions and release over a period of 5-7 years.

About 60 percent of water consumption in the arid Southwest occurs during

exterior landscaping, JoEllen Alberhasky, Program Manager for Sustainability Practices at Arizona State University said. “We are eager to see if this project produces similar or better conservation results in our climate and soil as compared to California.” She adds, “If so, it will become another valuable tool in addressing the ongoing drought in Arizona.”

The existing soccer fields at ASU currently consume roughly 11 million gallons (34 acre-feet) of water per year at a cost of approximately $63,500.

At a 40 percent reduction, 4.4 million gallons (13.5 acre-feet) of water and $25,400 thousand per year will be saved. Additionally, based on a conservative 5-year life cycle for the hydrogel, savings could equate to 22

million gallons (67.5 acre-feet) of water and $127,000 in savings over the life of the pilot.

Application to these 12 acres will take approximately 6-8 weeks.

CYCLISTS GEAR UP FOR ANNUAL TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE ON OCTOBER 13 16TH ANNUAL TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE BENEFITTING THE MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANCY WILL HAVE NEARLY 2,000 CYCLISTS RIDING ITS 30- AND 70-MILE COURSES Hosted by DC Ranch, the annual Tour de Scottsdale features a 70-mile and 30-mile ride with up to 2,000 cyclists gathering on Market Street. The event begins at 6:30 a.m. on October 13 and allows riders to enjoy spectacular scenery while supporting the legacy and protecting the future of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The event beneficiary is the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization that protects and promotes the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in North Scottsdale. Now in its 16th year, the Tour de Scottsdale donates 100 percent of sponsorship proceeds and a portion of registration fees to the Conservancy and has raised over $600,000 to date. Lori Calhoun from the Conservancy says, “With the money raised from the Tour we can develop and grow our education programs.

The programs both in and out of the classroom will reach thousands of students and preserve users. Some of whom might

not otherwise have the chance to develop a knowledge and love for the vast and marvelous makeup of the Sonoran Desert in which they live.”

The Four Stages of Transition (part 2)

he Stages of Transition can offer insight to our behavior during uncertain periods. The first stage of transition is Anticipation. Stage 2 is Ending.

Ending is the actual event that we experience, such as a move, a divorce, death of a family member, or perhaps a retirement. It is the time in which the experience we anticipated or expected finally transpires. There is no going back.

Ending can be a period of great emotion, including both a sense of loss and perhaps a sense of relief over the event. For example, when people move they may grieve over the loss of a beloved home full of memories while still being very relieved and excited to make new memories in their next home. Other endings may provide the same, though less comfortable, emotions. An example could be losing a family member who has been ill for a period. A person may grieve the loss of their loved one, yet still be riddled with shame or guilt for feeling relieved to not have to deal with the health complexities any longer. This feeling may remain private for fear of being judged by others, but it creates internal turmoil.

This Ending stage is about change management. Our perceptions of change can influence our outlook and how we manage change. It is the proverbial one door closing and the next one opening. We must determine if we are going to stare at the closed door or walk through the open one.

Pumpkin Patch Season Has Arrived!

TIPS FOR PUMPKIN PATCHING IN YOUR FAVORITE ARIZONA PATCH OF PUMPKINS

T

emperatures are slowly starting to drop, leaves are beginning to change in Northern Arizona, and everywhere you look are pumpkin patches, fall festivals, haunted houses, costumes, and spooky decorations. Autumn is officially arriving in Arizona and one of our favorite ways to celebrate and enjoy the season is to visit one of our many local pumpkin patches.

We’re sharing our inside knowledge and some of our best tips for visiting pumpkin patches here in the Sonoran Desert.

TIP 1: REMEMBER YOU ARE IN THE DESERT Many people who currently live in the Valley of the Sun are transplants from other parts of the country, so our most important tip for anyone planning to make the trek to a local pumpkin patch is this: remember that you’re still the desert and that it’s still hot outside! Nope, you’re not in Kansas anymore – or Minnesota, or Wisconsin, or California, or Illinois, or Pennsylvania. Remember that even though fall is in the air and you’re in full pumpkin mode, Phoenix is still a desert. And it’s still hot. It is almost guaranteed to still be hot every afternoon until the week after Halloween, so plan accordingly.

TIP 2: RESEARCH THE VENUE Take time to find the pumpkin patch that will work best for your family. Consider how long you are willing to sit in the car, what activities your kids will enjoy, and how much different pumpkin patches cost. All of them are fun, but there are ranges of activities and price points. If you are all about taking a day trip, plan on heading to a different part of the Valley or outside of Maricopa County. There are some great pumpkin patches in

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier the Tucson and Prescott areas, for example. If you are looking for just a few hours of fun, try something in town a little closer to home.

Generally, pumpkin patches have a somewhat common range of activities for most ages, but some specialize in adult fun too. Watch for extras like haunted houses, music venues, or even beer gardens. In this day and age, most pumpkin patches have a good website or at least a Facebook page. Check out their information before you go to find distance and directions, hours, and prices, as well as to check out what kinds of activities are available on-site. A little planning ahead will make your trip much more enjoyable.

TIP 3: GO EARLY Temperatures are usually quite a bit cooler in the morning, which makes it a great time to get outside and enjoy autumn weather. Typically, the crowds at a pumpkin patch are smaller right when they open, so the lines and wait times are shorter. It’s also easier to maneuver small kids around before lunchtime, when they get hungry. I recommend arriving as early as possible to make the trip more enjoyable for the whole family.

TIP 4: TAKE WATER It’s the desert and you are outside in the sunshine.

Even in cooler temperatures, you need to be sure to drink tons of water. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your beverages at home or trying to rely on food and drink stands at the pumpkin patch.

Sometimes the costs are high, and sometimes they just don’t sell what you need. Be sure bring enough water for everyone in your group, to reduce the risk of running out while you’re there.

It’s always best to be prepared for the trip ahead of time, especially in the desert.

TIP 5: DRESS APPROPRIATELY Whether the venue is a farm or a working ranch, the pumpkin patch will be sitting in an outdoor desert area that is not flip-flop friendly (think dirt, rocks, scrub grass, and cactus). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, socks, a hat, sunscreen, and layer comfortable lightweight clothing. I recommend the type of clothes you would wear hiking as the environment is the same, but cowboy gear is great too. Nothing beats a good pair of cowboy boots at the ranch!

TIP 6: BRING CASH In our experience, there is a really high likelihood of needing cash. Most pumpkin patches are small family farms or ranches, so credit card readers are not always readily available. That has changed gradually over the years, but it’s still best to bring some cash for your pumpkins and snacks, just to be on the safe side. Also, remember that most pumpkin patches are located on the outskirts of town and away from stores and strip malls, so an ATM machine may be a little tough to find.

Visiting a pumpkin patch once fall arrives is a special treat, full of great memories and well worth the trip. There are some great pumpkin patches in all corners of the Sonoran Desert, and most of them bring a special Arizona flare to the mix that you just won’t find in other parts of the United States. TAKE A BREAK BEFORE YOU GET STARTED Rather than diving straight into homework after an exhausting day, give your child 30 minutes to unwind enjoy a healthy snack, and maybe stretch their legs after sitting all day. Especially helpful for younger children, the break allows them to avoid feeling attacked by homework routines the second they walk in the door.

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS Help reduce distractions by turning off the TV and music when your child

USE A TIMER By using a timer, you’ll keep your child on track with very little distraction. You can use a kitchen timer or the timer on your smartphone.

If your child is easily distracted or gets frustrated, set the timer for 10 minutes to see how much work can be completed in that timeframe. If your child still has trouble with the assignment, provide assistance.

PRAISE YOUR CHILD When graded homework, classwork and tests are returned to your child, review the graded material together. If your child struggled with a particular concept in the past, but received a good grade on this assignment, praise your child on how well he or she did.

HELP WITHOUT DOING THE HOMEWORK Offer assistance when your child needs it. If your child is having trouble with a math concept, find a YouTube video that your child can view. As a parent, you shouldn’t complete your child’s homework assignments. Plan ahead and make sure that your child has enough time to complete bigger projects.

CHECK YOUR CHILD’S HOMEWORK Offer to review your child’s work for accuracy before it’s due. Go over any items that your child may have missed. Ask your child how he or she got that answer. It’s always a good idea to double-check work before it’s turned in.

very October, High Street in North Phoenix transforms into a veritable foodie paradise - all to support Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix (BGCMP). Restaurants and beverage experiences line the main street offering up great bites and sips from some of the Valley’s most popular spots.

Presented by Fry’s Food Stores, all proceeds from Dish It Out go towards helping the Clubs provide meals and programs to children in need around the Valley for the next year.

This year’s event is shaping up to be

Timeshares were very popular long ago before there was access to the Internet, which has brought travelers AirBnB, HomeAway, VRBO and other resources world-wide. With these venues, you just go and enjoy – no ownership costs. Thus, the need for timeshares has changed dramatically, even though resort/hotel chain marketing has not diminished in their efforts to sell them.

LEAVING YOUR JOB? WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR 401(K)?

I

f you’re in the early stages of your working life – or even in the notso-early ones – the chances are pretty good that you will change jobs at some point. When that happens, you’ll probably leave a few things behind – but will one of them be your 401(k)?

Of course, you wouldn’t really forget about your 401(k). (It does happen, how-ever – over the period from 2004 through 2013, more than 25 million people left at least one 401(k) or similar plan behind when they left their job, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.) But you will have to do something with your account.

Essentially, you have four choices: • You can cash out your 401(k). It’s your money, but if you take it out before you reach 59½, you will owe federal income taxes, plus any applicable state and local taxes. Also, you will likely be charged a 10% penalty

for early withdrawal. Perhaps even more important, if you liquidate your 401(k) when you change jobs, you’ll be reducing the amount you’ll have left for retirement.

• You can leave your 401(k) with your old employer. If your former employer permits it, you can leave your 401(k) intact, even after you move to a different job. This might be appealing to you if you like the investment choices in your account, but you won’t be able to make any new contributions. Plus, you won’t face any immediate tax consequences.

• You can move the money to your new employer’s 401(k). You can consolidate your old 401(k) with one offered by your new employer, if allowed. You won’t take a tax hit, and you might like your new plan’s investment options. And you may find it easier to manage your funds if they’re all held in one place.

• You can roll your 401(k) into an IRA. You don’t need the permission from any employer – old or new – to move your old 401(k) to an IRA. Your money will continue to grow on a tax-deferred basis, and an IRA offers you a virtually unlimited array of investment options – stocks, bonds, mutual funds and so on.

You can make either a direct or indirect rollover. With a direct rollover, the administrator of your old 401(k) sends your money directly to the financial provider that holds your rollover IRA. No tax is withheld because you never actually take possession of the money.

With an indirect rollover, you’re technically withdrawing the money and moving it to the IRA provider yourself. (You’ve got 60 days to make this transfer.) You will face a withholding of 20% of your account’s assets, but you may be able to recover most of this amount when you file your tax return.

Still, for the sake of ease of movement and avoidance of all tax issues, a direct rollover may be more advantageous.

What I love about Ready or Not is that it gets tons of laughs, not just because of its massive amount of gore or swearing, but because of its staging and slapsticklike comedy. The chaotic and relentless feeling, combined with the editing, gives you the feeling that you’re right there along with Grace (Samara Weaving).

Weaving proves to be a true badass and manages to be a standout in a cast full of incredible performances, including Adam Brody, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell. Ready or Not’s only real issue is that it isn’t a particularly scary film…a difficult thing to swallow in a movie meant to be in the horror genre. The great cast, clever screenplay and well played direction keeps you entertained, nonetheless.

Sweetness is how one can describe The Peanut Butter Falcon - like the lightest Terrence Malick film never made.

Peanut Butter Falcon flows freely from scene to scene, showing our characters taking in their surroundings and simply loving life. Zack Gottasgen is absolutely incredible here. This may also be Shia LaBeouf’s best performance in years and confirms that he can be a superb actor.

The southern-inspired score brings a feeling of authenticity to the film. This film is best described as beautiful.

Ad Astra will not be for everyone. It takes its time and is not anywhere near as action packed as the trailers suggest. The performances are quiet and at times may come off as bland. 27 years after the first film, a now-grown Losers Club returns to Derry to put an end to the returned maniacal clown.

Chapter Two shows that Andy Muschietti is a very exciting filmmaker when given free rein to do whatever he desires. The designs, locations and situations show him to be one of our more creative horror filmmakers of the day. He has a great eye for casting with the adult actors, particularly Bill Hader and James Ransone. “It’s” biggest problem is that, despite the time change and supposedly more mature themes, the movie feels no different than the previous film. We see the same humor and same style; the only real change is that now they’re adults. There seems to be a little less charm here than in the previous film. Chapter Two is visually a decent film, just a bit…. lacking in soul.

edona is a one of a kind place for tourists from all over the world, and a favorite weekend trip for both Arizonans and visitors from out of state. Named the “Most Beautiful Place in the U.S.” by USA Today in 2003, the stunning Red Rock views, tall pines, quaint shops, and beautiful creekside venues make it a charming place for a getaway any time of the year.

We often get questions from Arizona newcomers about Sedona, since it is a favorite of so many people and one of the most frequently recommended locations for people to visit. Here are our favorite spots to see when we head north to Red Rock country.

IN TOWN EXPERIENCE The town of Sedona is full of arts and culture, with shopping, restaurants and sightseeing tours. Whether you are spiritual, artistic, cultural, an outdoor enthusiast, or just plain laid back, Sedona has something for you. Our first stop is usually Uptown, right at the top of the “Y” – the intersection of Highway 89A and 179. It’s a great spot to find a public parking spot and get out to see the local sights. Walk up and down the block for a taste of the Old West town of Sedona’s origins, mixed with

A good place to start is the Visitor’s Center, where you can get great information to plan your visit around town.

One of our favorite in town spots to visit is Tlaquepaque, an outdoor shopping and dining area just south of uptown, with old world charm and an upscale atmosphere. Nestled in the trees on the banks of Oak Creek, the site of Tlaquepaque was once the homestead of Sedona’s original postmaster, Theodore Schnebly. The story goes that Schnebly was tasked with naming the town and, rather than picking his own name, he chose the more beautiful name of his beloved wife, Sedona.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE AND RED ROCK COUNTRY The best thing about Sedona has to be its location in Red Rock country. No matter where you go in Sedona, you have a stunning view of fantastic rock formations like nowhere else. Hiking and biking trails are abundant but be sure to pick up a trail guide or talk to a local park ranger or outfitter before you head out. The views and trails are gorgeous, but it is easy to get lost in the Coconino National Forest wilderness.

Some of the most popular outdoor spots include Slide Rock State Park and Oak Creek Canyon, but these are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Awesome trails and places to explore are everywhere throughout the town and surrounding area. Our favorite place to hike is in Red Rock State Park, just off Highway 89A as you enter Sedona. It has a visitor’s center with great information about the park, trails, local geology, and wildlife, as well as fantastic hiking trails in the Red Rocks and along the creek.

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES One of the things Sedona is best known for is being a spiritual center.

From its origins as a spiritual center for the early Sinagua people who lived there, to the more modern ideas of vortexes and new age spiritualism, Sedona is a popular place to seek spiritual healing of all types. Known for being the home of quite a few vortexes, or places on the earth with a special field of energy, Sedona attracts people from across the globe who want to visit these sites. The four most popular vortex locations are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

It’s also home to churches and houses of worship for almost every denomination. The most famous of these churches is another of our favorite places to visit, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Built on the top of a huge outcropping with a backdrop of Red Rock cliffs, this majestic church was originally commissioned by a local rancher and sculptor, Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel, built on Coconino National Forest land with special permission, was completed in 1956 and remains one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks. Legend has it that it is also known for being the location of one of the strongest and most easily felt premier vortexes in Sedona.

Sedona is a great place to visit all year round. It’s cooler than Phoenix in the summer and warmer than Flagstaff in the winter, with beautiful scenery and outdoor adventure in every season. It’s a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique places to see and experience.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, ”1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined,” making it a disease that should be treated right away if early-stage symptoms are noticed in one of your family members.

As of 2019, an estimated 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s dementia.
