ANTHONY BATES FOUNDATION
OCTOBER IS SUDDEN CARDIAC AWARENESS MONTH
D
oes your child have a ticking time bomb in their chest?
Eighteen years ago, Sharon Bates didn’t know there was one in her son’s chest waiting to go off. She got the phone call no parent ever wants to receive, telling her that her only child, Anthony, had died suddenly of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), otherwise known as an enlarged heart. Though he was a seemingly healthy college athlete and had 25 pre-participation sports physicals throughout his life, his disease was never detected. ECGs (Electrocardiograms - also known as, EKG’s) were never part of a pre-participation physical, nor are they required now. From this

”
tragedy, Sharon channeled her pain, anger, and frustration to create the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF) in 2002. Since then, ABF has been dedicated to saving young lives through the early detection of HCM because, Sharon Bates believes, “No parent should suffer the heartbreak of losing a child to an undiagnosed cardiac malady.”
Why is ABF’s work so important? October has been designated as Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness month. ABF’s life-saving mission is to provide crucial cardiac screenings for ages 10 and up, as well as establish a nationwide cardiac screening program for youth, addressing the public health issue through education, collaboration and facilitation. ABF is the only organization screening our nation’s youth with a copyrighted training protocol, as well as a collection mechanism of epidemiological data which provides valuable information for researchers and medical professionals. In addition, ABF donates Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) to area schools along with AED operation and CPR training. Since its inception in 2002, ABF has screened over 14,000 people, with 13 percent of those showing cardiac anomaly. Half of the findings are considered po-
tentially life threatening and need immediate followup. How valuable are your loved ones’ lives? ABF provides cardiac screenings events for organizations like businesses, medical offices, places of worship, schools, clubs or athletic studios. As long as there’s space for it, any organization can host an ABF event. CPR/AED training sessions and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) education are hugely important to protecting the community. ABF conducts cardiac screenings, providing both low cost access to healthcare and preventive cardiac tests to the public in Phoenix and the surrounding communities all over Arizona. Participants receive noninvasive cardiac tests, including ECGs, Echocardiograms (also known as Ultrasound) and blood pressure readings conducted by volunteer medical professionals. During large screening events, a Board-Certified Cardiologist reviews the results with each participant. Small screening event results are sent to the cardiologist after the event and reviewed within a week and participants are notified within another week. If a test result contains evidence of a heart abnormality or other health concern, they are referred to their family doctor first to receive treatment or referral for additional follow up treatment. Most people can get screened in about 30 minutes. Is a half hour of your time worth the peace of mind of knowing you and your family’s hearts are healthy? ABF is leading the way! Earlier in 2018, ABF expanded their world headquarters to an office on 32nd Street and Shea. The need for a larger office space was imperative. As Sharon states, “It has given ABF the ability to expand into medical research. Utilizing college interns, the research program will support research projects with University of Arizona and Kansas State University. Efforts are underway to capture additional data and research with Morris Institute within Arizona State University.” For more information on her worthy cause or to register for one of their upcoming screenings, please visit the website at www.AnthonyBates.org. ABF is a fully credited non-profit organization and tax deductible donations and company sponsorships help them to continue their life saving work. Feel free to contact the organization at 602-482-5606 if you have additional questions or would like to get involved. NORTH TATUM TIMES • October 2018 • 3

MELLOW MUSHROOM’S ARIZONA-EXCLUSIVE BREAKFAST MENU By Haley MacDonell BREAKFAST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY, AND MELLOW MUSHROOM, MORE WELL KNOWN FOR THEIR PIZZA, HAS BEGUN SERVING THEIR OWN SPIN ON IT.
Out of more than 200 Mellow Mushroom restaurants across the country, only two serve full-service breakfast seven days a week. In July 2018, the breakfast menu arrived on High Street in North Phoenix, after being introduced at the Mesa location in February.
“We didn’t want to do it unless we could do it right,” said Jay Beskind, owner of all five metro Phoenix Mellow Mushroom locations. “We did a great menu that’s very distinctive and is very high quality.” The menu features favorites like a homemade five-inch biscuit that, according to Beskind, took over a month to develop. You can add three toppings and a choice of homemade gravies: a regular sausage gravy or a green chili gravy. Johnny cakes, pancakes made with cornmeal, are also a popular choice. For those with a sweet tooth, the piña colada French toast is the way to go. “I was standing in our Mesa restaurant, on the first Saturday we were serving breakfast and I was greeting people on their way out, asking people how their experience was,” Beskind said. “When I asked this one gentleman that, he said he had the piña colada French toast. He looked at me and he says, ‘I’ve been waiting for this toast all my life.’”
The Atlanta-based franchise was brought to Arizona by Beskind and his son when they opened their Mellow Mushroom location at the Shops at Norterra. Since then, they have gone on to open four more locations across central Arizona. “When I tasted the pizza back east for the first time I looked at my wife, never dreaming I’d be in the business, and said ‘this is the best pizza,’” Beskind said. “I still feel that way, although today from a much more biased point of view.” For those craving a taste of the traditional Mellow Mushroom flair, the restaurant also boasts an extensive Happy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week. During Happy Hour, all appetizers and most alcoholic beverages are half-priced. “We are known in Arizona for our craft beer selection,” Beskind said. “In High Street especially, we have 48 beers on tap and we have a total of 100 to choose from.”

GHOSTLY PLACES IN ARIZONA A HISTORY OF HAUNTING
A
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
s the temperatures begin to drop in Arizona, the thrills and chills of Halloween spookiness begin to creep in. One of the most fascinating, and entertaining, aspects of Arizona is the legendary prevalence of its ghost stories. As the heart of the Wild West, Arizona has had a history of violence, tragedy and mayhem from its earliest days on record. The result was hundreds of ghostly stories that surround certain, creepy spots throughout our state. Some of the ghostly spots are difficult to find and can be hard to reach, but here are a few of the reportedly haunted places around Arizona you can easily visit and take a ghost tour this Halloween season.

IRDCAGE THEATER 535 East Allen Street Tombstone, Arizona Tombstone, located in the southern part of Arizona, is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone has seen its share of violence and death. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. Arguably one of the most haunted places in the state, the current owners of the Birdcage Theater describe it this way: “Over one hundred and forty bullet holes remain in the building. Visitors and employees of the Bird Cage Theater in Tombstone, Arizona, have reported seeing the spirits of former prostitutes and men in cowboy hats. Some claim to be touched and pushed by unseen forces. At night, the sounds of laughter, yelling and music have been heard, as though the parties of the old west were still raging.”

dona, is the historic town of Jerome. Once a billion dollar copper mining town, Jerome was also once known as the “Wickedest Town in the West.” The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and many of the original structures built in its heyday are still precariously hanging from the side of the mountain, looming over the Verde Valley of NorthCentral Arizona. The Grand Hotel is reportedly one of the most haunted establishments in Jerome, a town full of great ghost stories. A former hospital, it is said to have about eight different ghosts haunting the building, ranging from patients to staff who died in a variety of frightening ways. Although the current owner is not really into hauntings or ghost stories, he does say:
Visitors report hearing voices, seeing “spirit orbs” and feeling cold spots around the former mining town, reportedly another Arizona hot spot for ghostly activity. “If there are spirits, they must be a lot happier occupying a hotel instead of a hospital. They are dealing with a clientele that are here by choice and not necessity.”
If you’re looking for one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, take a day or weekend trip south to Tombstone and stop in at the Bird Cage Theater.

and established the Vulture Mine. A small mining town cropped up to support the mine and the usual antics of the Wild West ensued. Once home to a population of several thousand people, Vulture City provides people with a glimpse of the mining culture and lifestyle in the Old West, and visitors can explore several of the buildings to see a piece of Arizona history. Visitors can also see the infamous, and very creepy, “Hanging Tree,” where legend has it that 18 miners were executed for stealing gold in the late 1800s.
Jerome is well known for its hauntings, and haunted tours of the town are available for visitors who want to see more of the spooky sights and rumored haunts of the spirits in Jerome and the surrounding area.

ASSAYAMPA INN 122 E Gurley St. Prescott, Arizona The one time capitol of Arizona, Prescott is home to many stories of ghosts and Wild West antics. One of the most famous, however, is the supposed haunting of the somewhat more modern Hassayampa Inn in on Gurley Street. The hotel was constructed in the 1920s and quickly became the site of one of Prescott’s most notorious hauntings. The hotel
describes its most famous ghost story this way: “The year it opened, 1927, a very young bride checked into a balcony suite with her much older husband. According to the story, her husband went out to buy cigarettes and never returned. She waited for three days and then took her life in despair. Since then, countless hotel guests and employees have reported encounters with a young woman throughout the hotel crying at the end of a bed, dressed in a pink gown in the hallway, appearing and disappearing from rooms. Others have reported strange cold spots in her honeymoon suite. Frequently the smell of flowers emanates from the empty room.” The Hassayampa Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel in downtown Prescott, but it’s also the location of quite a few different reported ghost sightings. If you are in the mood for a good ghost story and some famous hauntings this Halloween season, the Hassayampa Inn in Prescott is worth a weekend visit.
These are just a few of the many spots in Arizona rumored to be home to ghosts of our Wild West past. So if you are looking for the thrills and chills of a good ghost story this Halloween season and want a place that is easy to visit, take a day or weekend trip to one of these famously haunted spots. And be sure to check Ladybug’s Blog for a more ideas for great places to get your kids out of the house to enjoy historic and fun adventures throughout the state of Arizona.

That’s why most residents in the Phoenix Metro area install reverse osmosis systems, rely on a refrigerator filter, or buy bottled water. It’s far from a perfect experience to have to constantly purchase or stress about maintaining your drinking water supply. Your water should be better. It should be high- quality and delivered right to your tap, giving you confidence that the water you drink is good for you, good for your family, and good for the earth. This is why upgrading your drinking water is standard practice here in the Sonoran Desert. But until now, your choices have been limited to someone else getting water to you: in old pipes and maybe through a filter, or in a bottle proven to leave behind microplastics and overwhelming amounts of waste. To make it worse, Phoenix drinking water has the highest levels of Chromium 6 of any major municipality (20- 400x the amount California scientists recommend we consume). So, upgrading your water
isn’t just about taste, it’s about safety. Finding the right purification system, remembering to replace your filters, or relying on bottled water might give you water access now, but will cause problems for you to solve in the future.
As Arizonans ourselves, we know these issues very well- we experience them too. So we set out to make drinking water perfect. Yes, perfect. Because your water shouldn’t be anything other than delicious, convenient, and safe. And you should know exactly where your water’s been and what it’s touched. SOURCE Hydropanels allow you to make water right on your roof or in your yard - using only sunlight and air. Invented and manufactured right here in Arizona by Zero Mass Water, SOURCE is your new option for perfected drinking water. Similar to solar, SOURCE is renewable, and instead of power it creates high-quality water. SOURCE drinking water starts pure (without any of the contaminants found in tap water) and is mineralized for taste and health. Installed at your home, SOURCE delivers water to a tap in your kitchen or refrigerator. With SOURCE, you have drinking water peace of mind. To get SOURCE Hydropanels for your home, visit www.info.zeromasswater. com/phoenix or call (623) 215- 3682.

North Valley - If your home has just come off the market and hasn’t sold, don’t be discouraged. The reason your home did not sell may have nothing to do with your home or the market. In reality, your home may have been one of the more desirable properties for sale. So Why Didn’t Your Home Sell? Last year many of the homes listed for sale never sold at all, and many sellers found that there was a tremendous amount a homeowner needed to be educated on to sell their home for top dollar in the shortest time period. Don’t risk making the wrong choices and losing both time and money on

DON’T GET TRICKED THIS HALLOWEEN – CANDY AND MEDICINE MIXUP By Shomari Jackson Drug-Free Communities Project Coordinator Southwest Behavioral & Health Services
T
here is no doubt that Halloween is right around the corner. Grocery store shelves are bursting with costumes and candy. While this is a time of the year where families can come together and enjoy the fall season, it is also important for parents to remember the importance of safeguarding medications that may be easily accessible to their kids. Many medicines and candy can be difficult if not impossible to tell apart. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), each year approximately 3 million people swallow or have contact with a poisonous substance — many under the age of 5. A young child may be poisoned by ingesting prescription or over-the-counter medications. Making it particularly enticing to young children is the fact that many medicines have a lookalike candy counterpart. Some of the most common household medicines that resemble candy include: • Motrin tablets look like orange M&M’s • Adderall XR resembles Tic-Tacs • Aspirin look like Certs • Dayquil capsules look like Mike and Ike’s • Ex-Lax looks like a Hershey’s candy bar • Vitamins look like Gummy Bears To help prevent this, parents should keep all medicines, prescription and over-the-counter, in a safe place not accessible to their children. This is also an opportunity for parents to talk to their children about the dangers of taking medicines or other substance that did not come from their parents. northtatumtimes.com
An additional concern is the availability of marijuana edibles. These products look and taste like regular food a child might consume: cookies, brownies, toaster pastries, and candies. Older kids who wish to experiment with getting high might choose these products because they are harder to detect. Edibles have no tell-tale smoke or odor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and AAP share these tips for keeping medication away from children. • Keep medications stored in areas up high and out of your children’s reach, or in a locked medicine cabinet • Don’t leave medications out on the counter after you are finished taking them • Keep your medications in their original containers, with labels intact • Remember to securely close the childproof safety cap each time you use any medication • Don’t leave your next dose out on the table or counter as a reminder to take it later • Properly dispose of any unused or expired medications • Never refer to any medications as “candy” or a treat Parents need to be aware of the safety issues with any prescription or over-the-counter medications and know what to do in an emergency situation if you suspect that a child has ingested something poisonous. Stay calm and try and determine what the child has ingested. If your child is awake and alert, immediately call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. But if they are unresponsive, have collapsed or not breathing call 911 immediately. And if the child has swallowed something, take it away from them but do not induce vomiting. COVER STORY
DISH IT OUT TRANSFORMS HIGH STREET INTO FOODIE EXTRAVAGANZA Special Event Supports Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix A perfect evening on High Street.
Your night out makes a difference!
Lights glittering overhead, rocking band playing, giant Jenga and Connect 4 and 3,000 foodies enjoying a night out—all to support Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix! Every October, High Street closes down the main street for one evening and the space is transformed into a foodie’s paradise.
More than 50% of the youth served by BGCMP live at or below the poverty level. After the school bell rings, students can go to the Club and work on their homework with trained staff who can help them. Every Club member can enjoy gym time, STEM programs, arts and music programs and so much more. Many schools are trimming these types of programs due to budget constraints; but, the Clubs offer a variety of enrichment programs every day after school, all included in the nominal fees. Thanks to philanthropy and special events like Dish It Out, BGCMP is able to provide these programs to thousands of kids across five Valley cities.
Known for its urban, sophisticated vibe, High Street makes an ideal location for this special event. The high-end shopping and dining destination feels both chic and accessible. Visiting the 40+ new and popular restaurant tents, Dish It Out guests can explore the Valley’s best bites and enjoy new beverage experiences all in one spot. The streets are lined with some of the Valley’s most popular restaurants presenting favorites and new dishes to try. The Beer Yard, presented by Crescent Crown Distributing, is a highlight destination as guests enjoy local craft beers. Breakthru Beverage features a number of their premium wines and spirits along the street.
It’s all included
Guests can feel great about spending an evening dining al fresco at High Street. Each $75 ticket includes all of the food guests can enjoy and delicious libations to accompany them, and the proceeds benefit the 12 Clubs around the Valley. There’s also a $200 VIP experience where guests can enjoy premium wines, spirits and foods, and relax in a VIP area. Best of all, VIP ticket holders can preview the event one hour early and explore all of the dining areas first. Thanks to Fry’s Food, the presenting sponsor of the annual fundraiser, thousands of guests can enjoy an evening out knowing that their investment supports more than 11,000 youth. 14 • October 2018 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

In addition to academic and recreation programs, every Club offers members healthy snacks after school and a hot, nutritious dinner. For struggling families, this savings can add up. Many of our members enjoy dinner at the Club every night. Working parents can count on the Club to be open late so they can work, pursue their education or just get those small errands done before heading home. • More than 15,000 youth enjoyed BGCMP outreach programs last year • Club members completed more than 7,300 hours of community service! • 330,897 healthy, hot meals and 332,895 snacks were served to members last year
BEYOND DISH IT OUT – HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Boys & Girls Clubs are open year round, and during school breaks to help working families. Each Club relies on community support and volunteers to help provide the highest quality care for the youth who enjoy these programs. Volunteers support BGCMP in a variety of ways, and many companies engage with the Clubs by adopting families, helping serve or support holiday events and meals, or sharing their coaching or mentoring talents in the Club. Companies and individuals can learn more about the one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities with BGCMP online at BGCMP.ORG.

any people enjoy going through model homes, even if they have no plans or interest in moving. What a great way to pick up ideas for decorating and/or about trending home styles. Sky Crossing is the latest project in our neighborhood located east of Cave Creek Road on Deer Valley. Whether you purchase from Pulte or Taylor Morrison, you’ll pay the Sky Crossing monthly HOA fee of $112 per month*. Active pre-sales have been going on – and the first home has already closed escrow. Of course, many of the homes will not be completed for a while. For a list of community amenities, go to www.SkyCrossing.com. There are plans proposed for a community center to include a fitness room, aerobics/dance studio, meeting rooms, an aquatic area, parks, basketball courts and walking trails. Sky Crossing is unique in that two builders, Pulte and Taylor-Morrison have joined forces to build approximately 1,200 homes ranging from 1,800 to 4,000 square feet while offering a choice of 45 floor plans. *The combination of home builders gives the community shared amenities, which they tell us, will keep the HOA fee lower for some time. We’ve been told that they’ve northtatumtimes.com
carefully budgeted to avoid having large increases upon completion of the project. Pricing for the models range from approximately $402,000-$591,000 (Pulte) and $451,000-$575,000 (Taylor-Morrison). The models are side-by-side except for the gated portions. There will be 16 neighborhoods in total within the Sky Crossing community; five of which will be located inside Astarea at Sky Crossing, an exclusive single-story gated neighborhood within the Sky Crossing masterplan community. The community will be a part of the Paradise Valley Unified School District with plans down the road for a school located within the community. That timing is entirely up to the school district. If you’re thinking about moving to Sky Crossing, remember that your Realtor can help you by being in your corner. It doesn’t cost you a penny so invite us (your Realtor) to go with you when visiting – or at the very least, tell the sales people that you’ll be working with your Realtor (provide the Realtor information to the builder’s sales staff) to sell as well as to purchase. Builders expect to work with Realtors much of the time. Send your real estate questions to: Jean@AlandJeanBatson.com
very month, you pay your mortgage. And, depending on your circumstances, you may be able to afford to put in additional payments – perhaps sizable ones. But should you? Or, if you really have the extra money, should you invest it? Initially, you might think it would be quite nice to rid yourself of that mortgage sooner, rather than later. But is it really the burden it seems? Actually, you get some real benefits from a mortgage. It certainly provides something of great value to you – your home. If you got your mortgage – or refinanced your home – within the past decade or so, you are borrowing money at a pretty favorable interest rate, by historical standards. And even assuming a mild rate of inflation, such as we’ve had for the past several years, you’ll essentially be paying off your mortgage with cheaper and cheaper dollars over time. Plus, your interest payments may well be tax deductible. (The new tax laws limit deductions on new mortgages of $750,000 or more. For questions on your specific situation, consult your tax professional.)
building more equity won’t make your home more valuable – it will rise (or fall) in value along with whatever’s happening in the housing market. By contrast, you could take the extra money and buy more shares in an investment such as stocks – and the more shares you own, the more valuable your investment will be if the price per share rises. Also, if you were to experience a temporary job loss or some other financial emergency, your home equity might not help you much; if you’re not working, you could even have trouble getting a home equity loan. Conversely, your investment portfolio can offer you greater liquidity, depending on your specific investments. Most investment vehicles, such as stocks and bonds, generally can be sold quickly, without much difficulty. (Keep in mind, though, that if you were forced to sell investments when their price was down, you could take a loss on the sale.)
So, given these advantages, an argument could be made that you should be in no hurry to pay off your mortgage. Still, you might be tempted to make the extra payments because you’ll be building home equity. After all, isn’t this equity valuable? It is – to a degree. The larger your home equity, the more money you’ll get to keep when you eventually sell your home.
Clearly, you could gain some advantages by using any extra money to invest, rather than paying down your mortgage. Nonetheless, you may simply get emotional and psychological satisfaction by speeding your progress toward the day when your house is paid off – and that type of satisfaction certainly has value. You’ll need to weigh these intangible factors carefully in deciding whether to increase your investments or make extra mortgage payments – because, ultimately, you need to feel that you’re doing the right thing, for the right reasons.
But in the meantime, that home equity may be less useful than you might imagine. For one thing, just

TALKING WITH AGING DRIVERS: DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE
H
aving a conversation about safe driving concerns with a senior citizen can be challenging, but it’s an important talk to have. Unfortunately, not enough older Americans are having these discussions. Nearly 83 percent of older drivers report never speaking about their safe driving ability to a family member or doctor, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Of the small percentage of families who do have a conversation, 15 percent do so after a crash or traffic infraction has occurred - which could be too late. Due to their fragility, older drivers are at greater risk of death and injury if involved in a crash. In 2016, more than 3,500 drivers age 65 and older died in traffic crashes and more than 200,000 were injured. With seniors currently outliving their ability to drive safely by an average of
seven to 10 years, AAA urges families to avoid waiting to talk with older drivers about safety and help seniors plan for “driving retirement” just as they plan for financial retirement.
• Start talking early and often. Be positive and supportive in your conversations, as well as focus on ways to help keep older drivers in your family safe behind the wheel.
“The right time to stop driving varies for everyone,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety. “This research shows that older drivers can be hesitant to initiate conversations about their driving capabilities, so it is important that families encourage them to talk early and often about their future behind the wheel. With early discussion and proper planning, elderly drivers may extend their time on the road.”
• Avoid generalizations. Do not jump to conclusions about an older driver’s skills or abilities.
AAA recommends that families start talking with older adults about safe driving early and avoid waiting until there are “red flags” such as crashes, scrapes on the car, new medical diagnoses or worsening health conditions. Families should:
• Speak one-on-one. Keep the discussion between you and the older driver. Inviting the whole family to the conversation can create feelings of alienation or anger. • Focus on the facts. Stick to information you know, such as a medical condition or medication regimen that might make driving unsafe. Do not accuse an older driver of being unsafe or assume that driving should be stopped altogether. It is important that families have a plan to help keep the older driver on
the road for as long as safely possible. Previous AAA Foundation research found that older adults who have stopped driving are almost twice as likely to suffer from depression and nearly five times as likely to enter a long-term care facility as those who remain behind the wheel. That is why it is important to have the conversation early and explore all available options, including other forms of transportation. Families can use the AAA Driver Planning Agreement as a guide to starting conversations about safety. The agreement allows families to plan together for future changes in driving abilities before they become a concern. To download the AAA Driver Planning Agreement, or for more information on AAA resources for older drivers, visit www.SeniorDriving. AAA.com.

IS YOUR DINNER CONTRIBUTING TO PLASTIC POLLUTION IN THE OCEAN?
D
id you know that the choices your local grocery store makes can have a global impact on the environment? From the types and brands of seafood sold to the way foods are packaged and carried out of the store, oceans worldwide are affected by the operations of grocers near you. Fortunately, supermarkets across the country have made significant progress over the last 10 years when it comes to providing sustainable seafood options to customers, according to a new Greenpeace report, “Carting Away the Oceans.” From advocacy and transparency initiatives to addressing illegal fishing, many major retailers nationwide are improving. Overall, 90 percent of the retailers profiled in the report received passing scores, 10 years after every single retailer failed Greenpeace’s first assessment. However, experts say that the momentum of
this positive trend should be applied to other areas of sustainability, too. “It’s time to put the same energy into tackling the unaddressed issues facing seafood workers and our oceans,” says Greenpeace oceans campaigner David Pinsky. “It’s not truly sustainable seafood if it’s produced by forced labor and then wrapped in throwaway plastic packaging. Supermarkets can use their brands, buying power and influence to do what is right for our oceans and for future generations.” As Greenpeace points out, the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic enters oceans every minute, and with plastic production set to double in the next 20 years - largely for packaging - threats to ocean biodiversity and seafood supply chains are increasing. According to the report, none of the retailers profiled currently have a comprehensive
policy to reduce and ultimately phase out their reliance on singleuse plastics. As a customer, you can make a difference by carrying your own tote bag on shopping trips and by asking your local supermarket what steps are being taken to reduce plastic use. Consumers can also show their support for brands doing the right thing by shopping only for seafood that’s produced sustainably and ethically. To learn more, visit greenpeace.org/ usa/carting-away-the-oceans. The next time you shop for groceries, take note of both the foods you are buying and the way items are packaged. Experts say that when you eat seafood from ethical, sustainable producers and limit single-use plastic packaging, oceans worldwide will benefit. StatePoint

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS SEARCHING
Told mainly through a computer and websites, a father tries to find his daughter after she goes missing. The format Searching uses to tell its story made it much more suspenseful and interesting than most other regular narrative features in its genre. The use of real websites both popular and obscure adds to the descent that David (John Cho) has to go through. Speaking of which, given that most of the time is spent solely with him, Cho does a fantastic job…so much so that he actually overshadows the other actors, though they all do their best. Beyond the main plot, the way the internet is portrayed is scarily accurate. From the different types of content that’s promoted on websites, to the people pretending to feel bad about a situation just for attention, it all feels genuine.
THE NUN
After the suicide of a nun, a priest and a novitiate investigate the area where it occurred, discovering the horrors that lie within it. The Nun should be a film that I dislike, with the amount of jump scares, strange editing choices (especially during some vision scenes), and an all-around cliche feel (you’ll likely feel like you’ve seen this film several times before). But director Corin Hardy managed to grab me, perhaps due to my love of gothic looking films. Everything from the cinematography to the set design has a very creepy feel to it, with set pieces in graveyards, underground dungeons and a church’s nave. The film is also bolstered by the leads Demian Bichir (the genuinely sympathetic but stoic Father Burke) and Taissa Farmiga (Sister Irene, a curious but confident practicing nun who has some great moments in the third act). And despite the constant jump 22 • October 2018 • NORTH TATUM TIMES
scares, they were at least real and a few genuinely got me. The Nun was one of the weaker Conjuring films, but still well done.
THE PREDATOR
A soldier must work with a scientist to protect his son from both the government and Predators. The Predator doesn’t feel finished, and I don’t mean in a “cliffhanger ending” way. I mean there are moments where it feels like scenes are missing, such as never seeing what happens to certain characters (one of the main characters literally disappears towards the end). Speaking of the characters, there are none in this film, just caricatures, designed to fit a stereotype without having any development. And for a film that’s supposed to be intense and scary, the amount of comedy ruins any of that, and even then, most of the humor doesn’t even work. It really is interesting how a film with so much talent in front and behind the camera can result in such a bad film.
MANDY
A lumberjack goes after a cult leader after the death of his wife. What other film can you think of has Nicolas Cage fighting a demon biker gang? When’s the last time you saw Nicolas Cage give a genuinely great performance that makes you sympathize with his character while also being insane? What about a haunting score from the late Johann Johannsson that combines orchestra, synth AND rock? There are also amazing supporting roles from Andrea Riseborough and Linus Roache, the latter who hams it to oblivion. And don’t even get me started on the beautiful neon drenched visuals. Mandy is as much of an experience as it is a movie, and it’s one that you must see.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA
PROGRAM IN ARIZONA
P
lease join the Paradise Valley National Society Daughters of America Revolution (PVNSDAR) and help sponsor the Wreaths Across America Program! The program will be held on Saturday December 15, 2018 at 10 am at The National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Az. 85024. The PVNSDAR chapter has sponsored veteran memory wreaths for the Wreaths Across America Program for the past several years and is a fundraising group/ sponsoring group for it. The event is a wonderful way to: Remember- our fallen Veterans; Honor- those who serve; Teach – our children the value of freedom. In 2007 the Worchester family of Harrington, Maine along with veterans and others who had helped with their annual Christmas Wreath ceremony in Arlington formed “Wreaths Across America.” The goal was to continue and expand this effort and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This non-profit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. In 2017 Wreaths Across America and its national network of volunteers laid over 1,565,000 memorial wreaths at nearly 1440 locations in the United States and beyond. This was accomplished with help from over 3270 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, donations of trucking and shipping plus thousands of helping hands! The annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as “ the world`s largest veteran`s parade”, stopping at schools, monuments, veterans homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to “Remember, Honor and Teach!” Proceeds place a wreath at one of the participating cemeteries: help support our fundraising partners including
educational and veteran’s services outreach programs. (Please note that all sponsorships are sent directly to the location of choice and no wreaths are sent to the individuals purchasing sponsorships.) On Saturday, December 15 there will be wreath ceremonies in over 1200 cemeteries and the PVNSDAR participates at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 23029 Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85024. That cemetery has approximated 65,000 graves and each year more wreaths are placed as veterans are remembered for their wonderful service to our country. The service will start at 10 a.m. If you wish to sponsor a wreath through the PVNSDAR please email: Kitfit2000@aol.com for a sponsorship form. Or visit the website www. wreathsacrossamerica.org for more information and online ordering. On the sponsorship forms please list: The location ID: AZNMCP (other locations can be found online but may not offer grave specific service) And the Fundraising ID for PVNSDAR: AZ0025P The cutoff date for wreath orders is November 26, 2018. Funds raised are used for purchasing wreaths and the PVNSDAR Packages from Home Program. northtatumtimes.com
