erving the children of the world” is the motto of Kiwanis International, and along the Tatum Corridor, the Kiwanis Club of Desert Ridge is translating those words into action.

Since being chartered in 2011, the Kiwanis Club of Desert Ridge (KCDR) has maintained a close association with the Paradise Valley Unified School District. KCDR sponsors Key Clubs (a service youth leadership program) at Horizon, Pinnacle and Shadow Mountain High Schools, providing community service and leadership opportunities to hundreds of Valley students.

The Foundation’s most recent community support effort is the sponsorship of the Cape Girl League, a program designed to inspire young girls in our community to dream about their future and to help make their dreams a reality.

FEWER FATAL OPIOID OVERDOSES IN STATES

opiates like hydrocodone, oxycodone, and morphine flood the streets, driving up addiction rates and fatal opiate overdoses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially labeled the problem an “opiate epidemic.” As experts scramble to come up with a plan that combats the nation’s dependence on opiates, a new study published last week in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine indicates

of those deaths involved opiate painkillers. However, researchers found that opiate-related deaths decreased by approximately 33 percent in 13 states in the following six years after medical marijuana was legalized.

Researchers looked at medical marijuana laws and death certificate data in all 50 states between the years of 1999 and 2010. During that time, only 13 states had medical marijuana laws in place. Researchers quickly

noticed that the rates of fatal opioid overdoses were significantly lower in states that had legalized medical marijuana. In 2010 alone, states with legalized medical marijuana saw approximately 1,700 fewer opiaterelated overdose deaths.

“We found there was about a 25 percent lower rate of prescription painkiller overdose deaths on average after implementation of a medical marijuana law,” lead study author Dr. Marcus Bachhuber said.

About 60 percent of the nation’s fatal opioid overdoses occur among patients who have legitimate prescriptions for their medications. In states where medical marijuana is legal, however, a legitimate opiate user is able to significantly decrease his or her dosage, making overdose less likely.

Currently, 23 states and the District of Columbia have passed medical marijuana laws. Use of medicinal cannabis is approved for a number of conditions, including cancer, HIV, multiple sclerosis, and glaucoma.

Despite the diagnosis, medical marijuana is primarily used to relieve chronic or severe pain. It’s that pain-

relieving effect that decreases the number of fatal opioid overdoses.

Bill Brothers is President of Encanto Dispensary, one of Arizona’s largest distributors of Medical Cannabis providing over 150 varieties for the benefit of its patients.

“According to the Arizona Department of Health, our state has recorded thousands of opioid overdoses and nearly 300 related deaths just since June of this year,” said Brothers.

“Medical marijuana is safely helping over 100,000 patients treat their pain in Arizona, and cannot be overlooked as a viable solution to the opioid epidemic.

“Evidence from other states clearly show a 25 percent reduction in opioid use in states with a legal Medical Marijuana Program. The important goal for Arizona should be to reduce the cost of patients’ annual fees from $150 per year to $15 per year, allowing thousands more Arizonians to have access to their legal medicine through the state program without bearing an undue financial burden. What other legal drug requires you to pay the state $150 to have access to your medicine?

None that I know of.”

PHOENIX WAGE GROWTH STRONGEST IN U.S. IN YET ANOTHER SIGN OF STRONG ECONOMIC MOMENTUM AND GROWTH IN QUALITY JOBS, THE PHOENIX METRO AREA EXPERIENCED THE HIGHEST WAGE GROWTH IN THE NATION OVER THE PAST YEAR. Wages in the Valley jumped 7.6 percent between July 2016 and July 2017, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“We’ve been laser focused on building a more innovation-driven economy that works for everyone, and we’re seeing great results,” Mayor Greg Stanton said. “This significant private-sector wage growth is being driven by advanced industries like technology, biosciences, healthcare, financial services and precision manufacturing.”

The average hourly wage grew by nearly $2 an hour over the past year in the Phoenix metro area and is now $26.75, 1.5 percent higher than the national average of $26.36.

Overall, the Phoenix metro area ranks 23rd in wages, but it’s quickly heading in the right direction. Before the Great Recession in 2007, advanced industries accounted for less than half of the workforce in Phoenix (46 percent). Now those higher-talent, higher-wage jobs make up more than 60 percent of the Valley’s workforce.

arents seeking positive, meaningful extracurricular activities for their children may struggle to identify the right programs for their kids, especially if busy family schedules limit options.

Kids who participate in Scouting exhibit strong moral values and positive character attributes, allowing them to embrace new opportunities, overcome obstacles and become better prepared for future success, suggests a study of kids age 6 to 12 conducted

by Tufts University.

For this reason, parents looking to create a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community in their children may consider Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. While many people associate these programs with camping and outdoor adventures, the Boy Scouts of America also offers programs for youth with other unique interests. 3 THINGS TO HELP YOU WIN AT ONLINE ADVERTISING

etting the right customers to call you requires the right messaging, and the right messaging needs to be on the right advertising platform.

Also consider that advertising will boost your brand’s recognition, even if it doesn’t net you a bunch of new customers. This recognition could be valuable in itself.

Online advertising can be a great addition to traditional print or media ad campaigns; it can be easily, and quickly updated, it’s very easy to track what is working and what is not, and you can control your advertising budget one day at a time.

However, there are some things to consider before you get started.

1. COMMIT TO A BUDGET It will take time to get it right. We recommend committing to a budget for at least 90 days.

Too often we see business owners get scared when the phone doesn’t ring immediately. By committing for 90 days, it’s easier to wait out those first couple months while you’re testing to get it right.

Be careful with early successes too.

We’ve seen campaigns get incredible results immediately and later slow down.

By committing to a budget, you’ll be able to work through the ups and downs of starting a new campaign.

2. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE & YOUR OFFER Too often we see ads promoting a product or service without any con-

sideration for how your customer is searching.

If you’re using Google Adwords, what keywords should you be showing up for? This goes beyond a basic keyword list for your product or service.

For example, if you provide auto repair services, make sure your keywords match the language your customers will use when searching for auto repair. Of course “auto repair” should be a keyword, but so should “my air conditioner in my car isn’t cold,” or “my engine is making a squeaking sound.”

With the right keyword list, you’ll make sure to keep your ad costs down and your results up.

If your landing page has a phone number, you should have call tracking to know how often the phone number results in a conversion.

If your landing page has a form, you should have a way to track how often those requests turn into revenue.

Oh, and you should have a landing page separate from your website.

Without a landing page, it’s tough to tell what’s working and what isn’t.

With good tracking systems in place, you’ll be able to make better decisions about the changes you need to make.

3. TRACK EVERYTHING Once your ads are up and running, you need tracking systems in place.

KIDS’ CORNER BUYING HIKING GEAR FOR KIDS: OUTFITTING YOUR KIDS FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

L

et’s face it - gearing up for a hiking, camping or outdoor nature activity with a youngster can be a challenge.

Those cute little cotton play outfits and sneakers or flip flops just won’t cut it on a trail or dirt path. Not to mention the fact that our daughter prefers dresses and skirts, which makes finding hiking and outdoor wear an extra challenge.

After many shopping trips, try-on sessions, trials and errors, we have managed to find a few stores and brands that consistently provide good quality (and good value) hiking and outdoor gear for youngsters. Here are three of our favorites right now.

COLUMBIA Columbia has good quality outdoor clothes for kids that fit well, so we do a lot of shopping at the Columbia Outlet store near us when we

need to gear up (which also saves us money). One drawback is that they cycle through seasonal clothing frequently, so buy it when you see it or it may be out of stock the next time! Columbia clothing is also available for kids at REI, Sportsman’s Warehouse and sometimes Cabela’s (as well as many other sporting goods stores, though the kids clothing is much harder to come by). You can also order from their website - sizes run pretty true to age, but can vary by product.

REI Can I just say that I am an REI junkie? Every time we are within 5 miles of a store, we have to go check it out and see what’s new.

They have a fantastic selection of kids outdoor clothing and shoes in various brands, including their own label. Like Columbia, they cycle through seasonal wear pretty quickly, but they almost always have something that we like in our

kid’s style and size. The shoes are top quality and they frequently have items on sale. A must see if you can swing by - they also have an outstanding website to shop online.

CABELA’S Cabela’s is an outdoor adventure destination all it’s own. The moment you walk through the door into the cavernous outdoor retail fantasyland, you just know you will find something worth buying.

Their kids’ clothing is very high quality, although it can be difficult to find what you’re looking for in smaller kid sizes (5 and under).

They have a range of clothing types, but are particularly welloutfitted for anything hunting and fishing related. In any case, it’s worth a trip to the store just to see the aquarium, massive displays of animals, wildlife museum, and all the possibilities available for a multitude of outdoor adventures.

SPORTSMAN’S WAREHOUSE Sportsman’s Warehouse is a great local outfitter and scaled-down version of Cabela’s that is closer, less expensive and easier to visit.

They have been increasing the quantity of their children’s clothing recently, and you can always find items that are good quality and well-suited for any outdoor activity. AUTUMN IN ARIZONA – PUMPKIN PATCH SEASON HAS ARRIVED!

emperatures are slowly starting to drop, leaves are beginning to change up north and everywhere you look are pumpkin patches, fall festivals, haunted houses, and Halloween costumes and decorations. Autumn is officially arriving in Arizona and we want to share our favorite places to celebrate Pumpkin Patch Season this fall. Most of these locations are open on weekends

throughout October, but be sure to check out our Pumpkin Patch and Fall Festival List to get specific details on dates, hours and websites – for all of these venues and many more!

MACDONALD’S RANCH MacDonald’s Ranch in north Scottsdale is one of our family’s annual favorites. We make time every year to visit the ranch’s pumpkin patch, which is only accessible by horse drawn hayride. The first stop at the

ranch is their old Western town, just inside the entrance, then on to the pony rides, games, hay bale maze and other fun activities. We always pick out a least a couple of pumpkins (they have a great range of sizes), so either save the hayride to the pumpkin patch for last, or bring a wagon to carry your load.

Special note: wear sunscreen, a hat and very comfortable shoes – this is a working ranch and you’ll be walking through the desert to enjoy all that the ranch has to offer.

MORTIMER FARMS We love to visit Mortimer Farms in the cooler climes of Dewey, Arizona. This working farm has a fantastic Pumpkin Festival, and includes activities for older kids and grown-ups on Friday and Saturday evenings. Mortimer Farms not only has a real live corn maze, hay rides, and pumpkin patch, it also boasts a zipline, nightly barn dance, karaoke, pig races and an official “Pumpkin Chunkin’” competition! This Pumpkin Festival is

worth the trip, and is a great way to cool off during our not quite cool yet Octobers in Phoenix.

PIONEER LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM HARVEST FEST The Pioneer Living History Museum on I-17, just south of Anthem, is a great place to enjoy some fall festivities, and learn a little about Arizona history. The Pioneer Harvest Fest has a pumpkin patch, hay rides, gold panning, a BB Gun Range, crafts, games, food, live entertainment and more. You can enjoy the festival and visit the Pioneer Living History Museum village to see buildings restored from historic sites around the state. Check out their website for a full list of activities and see what special events are happening each weekend.

TOLMACHOFF FARMS Right in the heart of Glendale, Tomachoff Farms is a real working farm and home to one of our favorite pumpkin patches to visit every year. The farm has a huge pumpkin patch, a mini corn maze for the little ones, and a haunted corn maze for bigger kids. They also have a great petting zoo, train ride, hay pyramid, corn box, adult and child pedal cart track, giant jumping pillow and much more.

Tomachoff Farms is a great place to take your kids and hosts many field trips from schools around the valley. Go enjoy some shady trees, fresh air and pumpkin farm fun in the West Valley!

CAREFREE ENCHANTED PUMPKIN GARDEN It’s hard to believe that the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden in Carefree, Arizona has free admission.

The garden features beautiful, whimsical pumpkin carvings from master sculptor Ray Villafane and the Villafane Studios team. It is open to the public and woven throughout the four acre Carefree Desert Gardens – right on Easy Street in Carefree, Arizona.

Q: If you’re a Buyer, what is the first thing you need to have before looking for a new home?

A: Unless you’re a cash buyer, the first thing you need to know is how much you can borrow on top of the cash down payment you have.

Just like using a professional Realtor to help you find and successfully purchase (or sell) your home through the quagmire of paperwork, you need a Mortgage Lender for the financial portion of your purchase. Your Realtor can recommend a few for you to interview to be sure you have the right fit. We have several trusted Mortgage Lenders we can highly recommend It is important to understand that to make an offer on a property, your Realtor must include proof of the Buyer’s capability to purchase attached to that offer. It’s called a PreQualification Letter.

This means the Buyers have given their information to a Mortgage Lender and based on income-to-debt ratios, assets, job history and tax records, he/she will determine how much they can borrow. The loan amount plus the down payment the buyer has determines

the price range of the home they can purchase.

Most of us go to Open Houses or look on-line; often falling in love with a home or neighborhood before really knowing how much they can or should spend. Reality can be disappointing so find out the price range before looking.

When you’re planning to purchase a new home, unless money is no object at all, until escrow closes, don’t buy anything major on credit. We mention “until escrow closes,” because the lender will run the Buyer’s credit again before sending out loan documents three days before closing. If they see a new debt, that could mean you won’t qualify for the home. Be a wise Buyer.

Steven Soderbergh’s (Ocean’s Trilogy, Magic Mike) has returned to feature films after a brief 4 year retirement. Not only is it incredibly funny, it also has surprisingly heartwarming moments, mostly with Jimmy Logan (Tatum) and his daughter Sadie (Farrah Mackenzie). The supporting characters, like Sylvia (Katherine Waterston) and Dayton (Sebastian Stan) also give memorable performances, despite their small screentime. The film’s editing also deserves praise, especially for rarely jumping back and forth

between characters talking. Soderbergh’s return has started with a (pun intended) bang.

IT A group of preteens (Jaden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff) come together to fight a shapeshifting evil (Bill Skarsgård) that is responsible for the deaths of several children.

What I love about It is how character focused it is. Director Andy Muschietti (Mama) dedicates a great amount of time to getting to know The Losers Club, and they feel real as a result of it. That’s not to say that the film doesn’t have any effective sacres (which I won’t spoil of course). And of course, Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise is both frightening and strangely funny. Also worth mentioning is Chunghoon Chung’s excellent cinematography.
