APS Deadline September 30th Homeowners Must Act Now

H

omeowners must sign up for solar and have an APS Solar Reservation approved by APS by end of day September 30 in order to receive and be grandfathered in to the current cash price for solar system production exported to the grid. Homeowners who go solar after the September 30th deadline will receive a substantially lower cash credit.

A typical rooftop solar system produces a large surplus of power in the Arizona spring months when we have abundant sunshine but little or no need for air conditioning. This power is sold to APS at the price set by the ACC and the cash credit is added to the customer’s account. For systems that are designed to produce the same power per year as the homeowner consumes per year (1:1 ratio), the homeowner will sell 50% to 60% of their solar production back to APS, which creates a cash credit that will be used to pay APS for the additional kWh’s needed in the summer months when the system is producing a deficit amount of the power needed. This ends up being thousands of kWhs sold every year and so the price per unit is very important. The less homeowners get paid from APS, the less cash credit their spring production will generate and the more the homeowner will have to come out of pocket to cover the summer bills. With the exception of 2020 when the ACC voted to postpone the price drop to October 2021 due to the pandemic, the price APS pays the customer for their credits has been dropping yearly since 2017 when the ACC approved ending Net Metering and replacing it with a form of Net Billing, known as RCP. Prior to 2017, customers who installed solar were grandfathered into Net Metering, which provided homeowners a 1:1 kWh credit, which meant they are getting full price for their production as compared to what they were being charged. A system designed to

GO SOLAR

produce 100% of the customer’s usage would leave them with a $20 remaining bill for APS fees and other taxes. Since September 2017, homeowners have been getting grandfathered into the RCP program and their credit is based on the price that APS is required to pay in the year that they sign up. In 2017/18 that price was 12.9 cents. In 2018/19 it was lowered to 11.6 cents and then dropped again in 2019/20 to 10.45 cents where it is today and will be until September 30. At the current buyback rate a homeowner that has a 1:1 or 100% usage to production design will experience a $40 to $80 average remaining APS bill depending on system size. This has increased from the $20 per month under Net Metering and will increase again for customers that go solar after September 30. The good news about RCP is that, unlike Net Metering, homeowners can reduce their annual APS net bill to $0 per year by increasing the number of panels to produce enough additional cash to cover the APS differential in prices, fees and other taxes. Once the buyback rate drops in October it will take more panels to get the net to zero. There is very little, but enough time left, to get a solar system custom designed for your home and have the APS reservation submitted and approved before the deadline. Contact Sunsolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have the design prepared for your home free of charge. The Cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale Share Drought Management Plans

Both cities emphasize preparedness and a conservation mindset RECENTLY, THE UNITED STATES BUREAU OF RECLAMATION DECLARED THE FIRST-EVER TIER 1 SHORTAGE ON THE COLORADO RIVER, BEGINNING IN JANUARY 2022. This shortage is an outcome of persistent declines in Colorado River flows as a result of long-term drought conditions, over allocation of available river resources, and climate change. The zip codes this newspaper covers (85050 and 85054) are in a unique position as some of our readers are within the city of Phoenix boundaries while others are technically in Scottsdale. Because of this, we touched base with both cities to learn about their responses to the drought. PHOENIX’S RESPONSE TO DROUGHT AND HOW IT IMPACTS THE CITY Information Courtesy of Phoenix Water Phoenix is built for drought. The city has developed a robust water resource portfolio over many decades and will continue to take proactive actions to prepare for even deeper shortages on the Colorado River in the years to come. Living in a desert city isn’t always easy but, because of thoughtful and intricate planning, Phoenix will continue to thrive as the fifth largest city in the United States. “The Bureau of Reclamation’s Tier 1 Shortage declaration does not come as a surprise, as it is reflective of serious drought conditions across the Western United States. The City of Phoenix has been working for the last several decades to diversify water resources, store water for future use, and invest in infrastructure to enhance the city’s resilience to drought,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “Phoe-

nix has a strong legacy of conservation and wise water use to build upon. It is crucial that we continue to develop these strategies and bolster our city’s response to the effects of a warming climate.” Phoenix Water will continue to provide safe, clean, and reliable water to its customers without interruptions, according to the city. However, it is essential that residents and business owners do their part to be water smart and embrace a desert lifestyle by using water wisely. Residents can read the city’s water resource plan, drought action plan, and tips on how to wisely use water at Phoenix.gov/Drought. SCOTTSDALE DECLARES “STAGE 1” OF ITS DROUGHT MANAGEMENT PLAN; CITY ACTIVATES DROUGHT MANAGEMENT TEAM Information Courtesy of the City of Scottsdale Scottsdale City Manager Jim Thompson officially declared “Stage 1” of the city’s Drought Management Plan on August 17 as a direct result of the Colorado River Tier 1 shortage declared by the Bureau of Reclamation. The Colorado River shortage will take effect January 1, 2022, but Scottsdale’s “Stage 1” took effect immediately. In a Tier 1 shortage, water cuts of the Colorado River will be substantially borne upon central Arizona agriculture, leaving municipal subcontractors such as Scottsdale largely unaffected. Nevertheless, this marks a momentous point in history for water management in Arizona.

4 • September 2021 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

Scottsdale has been preparing for this situation for several decades and has spent millions of dollars to recycle and reuse as much water as possible. While water will continue to be delivered as normal to customers now and into the future, Scottsdale views this declaration as a significant milestone that requires extensive examination by all customers to further use water wisely and efficiently for the long-term viability and sustainability of the city. Scottsdale’s Drought Management Plan has five stages that increase in severity as water supply amounts are decreased and has water use reduction measures that may be implemented by the City Manager. The declaration of the city’s “Stage 1” of its drought management plan means Scottsdale will activate its Drought Management Team consisting of a diverse group of division and department

directors from across the city. Their goal will be to examine the needs and recommendation of targeted appropriate responses and increase drought and water shortage communication efforts throughout the city. At “Stage 1” of the Drought Management Plan, Scottsdale will ask residents and businesses to voluntarily conserve and more efficiently use water - a key initiative and communication effort. Scottsdale offers a wide and varied list of programs and rebates to residents and businesses to utilize to be the best stewards of its water resources. Scottsdale officials emphasize that every individual is key to making the city a thriving desert community and, in doing so, finding ways to use every drop efficiently and with a conservation mindset. More information can be found at ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “shortage.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Local Foodies Rejoice

Arizona Restaurant Week Returns September 17 – 26 THE ARIZONA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION CONTINUES ITS FOURTEENTH YEAR OF CULINARY DISCOVERY WITH ITS 2021 FALL ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEK (ARW) DINE IN OR TAKE OUT, TAKING PLACE AT RESTAURANTS AROUND THE STATE FROM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 THROUGH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26. For this 10-day dining extravaganza, participating restaurants are offering even more opportunity this year with an additional price option. Now threecourse prix fixe menus have three price alternatives for $33, $44 or $55 per person. The added $55 price point gives restaurants greater range to provide their guests with an even more elevated dining experience and accounts for rising prices across the industry. These dedicated ARW menus highlight the culinary talents of chefs around the state while giving dining enthusiasts a great deal. In addition to the three-course prix fixe menu, many restaurants offer wine pairing selections to enhance each course for an additional cost.

“It’s no secret that the restaurant industry - and the people who keep it running every day - have suffered greatly as a result of the pandemic,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “Arizona Restaurant Week is an opportunity for residents and visitors to help this industry that has a dynamic impact on our economy as a whole. We appreciate the support of diners that continue to dine in or take out not only because they enjoy it but because they want to be part of rebuilding our vibrant culinary community. The new price option this year will allow restaurants to raise the bar on their offerings for guests.” This year’s fall ARW lineup already has more than 60 participants. Diners can visit arizonarestaurantweek.com for a complete list of Fall Arizona Restaurant Week participants and their menus. As new restaurants are added, the website will continue to be updated to provide a comprehensive list of choices.

KONA GRILL About Arizona Restaurant Week The “most edible time of the year,” Arizona Restaurant Week sends diners on a tenday tasting tour of the state. Participating restaurants are not only known for their exceptional cuisine, they also spare no expense to give diners an extraordinary culinary experience. One of Arizona Restaurant

Week’s goals is to position Arizona as one of the top culinary destinations in the nation by increasing awareness of the more than 8,500 dining opportunities available as well as stimulate business and revenue for restaurants throughout the state. Arizona Restaurant Week is produced by the Arizona Restaurant Association.

BRITISH ENTREPRENEURS BRING A TASTE OF THE U.K. TO NORTH SCOTTSDALE A group of British entrepreneurs have brought a taste of home to North Scottsdale after purchasing and transforming a well-established pub. Sukhi Ghuman, CEO and Group Chairman of the Octavian group of companies, has made his name in the worlds of facilities management and healthcare over the years. But now he, along with three other British business associates, is turning his hand to the hospitality industry after snapping up the Skeptical Chymist. Sukhi and the team of Kevin Johnston, Suky Khangura and Manjinder Singh have transformed the Irish bar into a traditional British pub. The new name of the pub is The Union Jack and it is located at 15689 N. Hayden Road, Ste. L125. “We are bringing some authentic British comfort food for the people of Scottsdale to sample at The Union Jack,” Sukhi says. “That means bangers and mash, a full English breakfast and beans on toast - all great favorites back home. We are open all day and will continue to welcome sports fans to the pub.” The Skeptical Chymist had been home to the Arizona chapter of the Seattle Seahawks Booster Club, and Sukhi says they’ll be made to feel more than welcome at The Union Jack. “My main passion is soccer - I’m a huge Everton fan - and The Union Jack includes a Premier League lounge where live games will be streamed alongside U.S. sports - it should make for a fantastic atmosphere!” The Union Jack just opened late last month. On Friday, October 15, the 22nd annual Foothills Empty Bowls Lunch & Art Auction to honor World Hunger Day will be held at Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “This Empty Bowls Art Auction has tapped into the generous spirit of dozens of renowned Sonoran Arts League artists,” says Perry. “We already have received numerous items, ranging from paintings to sculpture from all media. Many artists donated two or more pieces out of a selfless desire to ensure that the Foothills Food Bank has the resources it needs to help our neighbors in need.” Perry says Christopher Heede and Virginia Brooks, among other excellent talent, are two of the local artists that people will find in this year’s art auction.

you. A prospective employer should be able to outline your expected career path along with a timeline for advancement. Consider whether you could be walking away from a bright future at your current workplace. Is there a chance your employer would sweeten your terms to keep you on board?

T

he tight labor market is enticing many people to evaluate options to start a new career. If you’re among those who plan to quit your current role in search of a better opportunity, it’s important to consider how doing so could affect your finances. Here are some things to think about before you hand in your two-week notice. Compare the complete package. Many factors contribute to work satisfaction. Weigh these factors when evaluating whether to stay in your current job or take the leap into a new opportunity.

If you decide to take the leap and have a new job offer in hand, here’s what else to consider. Negotiate while you can. Most prospective employers expect some give-and-take during salary and benefit discussions. Think of ways to quantify the value you would bring to the business and be prepared to counter if an offer does not meet your expectations. Transition your benefits. Use your paid time off before leaving your current position. Ensure continuity of health care coverage by enrolling in COBRA until your new benefits kick in. You will have decisions to make about your 401(k) savings. You can keep them where they are, transfer them to your new employer’s plan, or roll savings into your own account. You can also cash out your savings, but this will incur a tax penalty and detract from your retirement goals. Leave on good terms. Ideally, you want to maintain good relations with former employers. Provide ample notice to help them find a replacement. Ask for a letter of referral. Participate in an exit interview if one is offered. Talk to your financial advisor. Job changes are life events that impact your financial future. Lean on your advisor’s expertise to adjust your financial plan as you transition in your career.

• Pay – Better pay is often the main motive for changing jobs. However, pay comparisons are not always as clear as they seem, particularly when moving from an hourly to a salaried position or a position reliant on commission. With a salary, you may be expected to work extra hours without the benefit of overtime, but bonuses can potentially boost your earnings. • Benefits – Benefit packages vary from employer to employer. How much paid time off is your employer offering? Will you have quality options for health, dental and life insurance? Will they cost more? Does the company match 401(k) contributions? There is value in other perks as well, such as an on-site workout facility, dry cleaning or daycare facility that can save you time and money. • Culture – Pay attention to the culture of your prospective workplace. How do you see yourself fitting in? Does the workplace seem to be collaborative or Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFATM, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®, hyper-competitive? Where do you thrive? ne of the most fulfilling things we can do in life is serve others. Ideally, the happiness we derive is all the thanks we need. But an amazing program called Legacy Corps is making it even more rewarding to help others. Based at Arizona State University, this national AmeriCorps program matches people in communities across the country with veterans and military families who need support. Hospice of the Valley is thrilled to be the first Arizona partner and receive a grant to fund the program for the next three years. Of the 20,000 patients we serve annually, about 1,400 are veterans, who often find themselves physically and emotionally overwhelmed. Many need assistance with transportation, grocery shopping or light housekeeping. Now we can help lighten the stress. “Hospice of the Valley is excited to implement this grant from Legacy Corps and touch more families in our veteran community,” says Volunteer Services Director Stacia Ortega. Volunteers who join the program are called Legacy Corps members and receive special training in caregiver support. Their participation is invaluable to military families who need socialization, companionship and inhome respite care to ensure their loved

ones are not alone while a caregiver takes a much-needed break. In addition to training, Legacy Corps offers incentives like a monthly allowance and a college tuition award after a year of service. Those who are 55 or older can pass this award to a child or grandchild. Legacy Corps’ national project director, Jack Steele, says the grant enables Hospice of the Valley to recruit and train 24 volunteers this year. Among the current applicants are a 19-year-old woman who has volunteered with various nonprofits since age 15 and a 43-year-old speech therapist who wants to help veterans living with dementia. “They both express a vital quality: a passion for national service and excitement about making a difference in their communities,” says Eileen Dullum, Legacy Corps program coordinator for Hospice of the Valley. David Swindell, director of ASU’s Center for Urban Innovation, which oversees the Legacy Corps grant, sees the program evolving. “Next year, we hope to offer our first course for volunteers to learn about and deliver respite care while earning course credit at ASU.” To learn more about Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families, visit hov. org/volunteer/Legacy-Corps. Local Nonprofit Seeking Nominations for Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women

W

omen from across Arizona who are currently making an impact in their communities in a meaningful way are being sought as nominees for Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women. Now 11 years old, 48 Arizona Women, the sponsoring Valley-based organization, started as an official Arizona Centennial Project in 2010 to recognize the state’s most remarkable women having a positive impact in their communities, often with little fanfare. The organization’s mission is to, “Transform lives, build stronger communities and help positively shape Arizona and the nation.” Partnering with the Arizona Historical Society, 48 Arizona Women honors professional and non-professional women from diverse backgrounds whose leadership and commitment are contributing in a positive way to the future of Arizona. “The first group of 48 honorees were selected in 2012 and included U.S. Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O’Connor, Cindy McCain, and Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee,” says Connie Robinson, chair of the 48 Arizona Women Steering Committee. “But they also included a former governor, educators, a bull fighter who became a CEO, an advocate for the treatment and cure of Niemann Pick Type C disease, a former mezzosoprano with the Metropolitan Opera, a pastor who ministers to incarcerated women, a mayor who transformed a city, an ambassador who became Secretary of the Air Force and many dedicated philanthropists, volunteers, doctors, artists and entertainers in leadership positions throughout the state.” Open nominations are currently being accepted through September 30 and local residents are encouraged to nominate anyone they feel is worthy—from a next door neighbor to an elected official. Nominations can be completed online at 48women.org.

Paper nomination forms are available by calling 602-896-9000 or can be downloaded from the website. “This program was created to raise awareness for the amazing work women are doing to improve and enhance the lives of Arizonans,” Robinson says. “While some nominees will be wellknown, others will be working diligently but less publicly in their cities and towns.” A committee comprised of a diverse group of community leaders, public and private sector leaders, and residents will evaluate nominees on several key factors: the impact that their leadership, accomplishments and dedication have had on the state and the nation; their influence as role models and visionaries; and their ability to relate to a wide range of people. Honorees will be announced in early 2022 and featured in a 140-plus page coffee table book titled Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women—A New Decade, telling each woman’s story in words and photos. All honorees will be formally recognized in spring 2022 during a 48 Women Luncheon as well as a VIP reception for the launch of the book. The book will be available for purchase throughout Arizona in mid2022.

CCUSD Capital Bond Election Questions Answered By Dr. Cort Monroe, Superintendent of Cave Creek Unified School District

D

id you know that on the November 2 ballot there will be an election for a $40 million dollar Capital Bond for the Cave Creek Unified School District (CCUSD)? I would like to answer some questions to help educate local voters in order for them to have the facts surrounding their upcoming vote. WHY HAS CAVE CREEK UNIFIED CALLED FOR A BOND ELECTION? The Cave Creek Unified School District educates approximately 5,200 students with a 97% high school graduation rate. CCUSD has seven campuses, one million square feet of buildings, and 236 acres of land. The district has not passed a bond election since 2014. This bond would provide needed funds to upgrade technology for students and classrooms, refresh school facilities, purchase 21st century furniture and equipment, make sports facility improvements, purchase school buses, and make repairs and renovations intended to maintain a safe student environment that is conducive to learning.

Beginner-Competitive Risk FREE Trial »All Ages

WHAT IS A BOND? Education or general obligation (Class B) bonds are voter-approved funds used to purchase technology, school buses, school safety and security, athletic infrastructure, and school facilities improvements. Districts collect this money by taxing property owners on the assessed value of their properties. Residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural properties all pay taxes. Districts sell the bond to investors. Selling bonds are similar to a loan, much like a home equity line of credit, but for a school district. Districts must maintain their facilities and the School Facilities Board does not cover expenses for technology, athletic improvements, transportation, or several other maintenance items on schools. A school district cannot pay salaries or benefits for district employees from bond funds.

14000 N. Hayden Rd. #102, Scottsdale, AZ

HOW MUCH IS THE BOND AND HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED? The bond is $40 million. The district will use money generated by the sale of bonds to purchase instructional technology

WHAT SCHOOL SITES WILL BENEFIT FROM PASSAGE OF A NEW BOND? All seven CCUSD school sites will benefit from the passage of the new bond. WHAT WILL BE THE COST TO HOMEOWNERS IF THE BOND PASSES? The average assessed value of homes in the district is $557,880. The cost for the average homeowner would be approximately $94 per year or about $8 per month. HOW MANY YEARS OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS WILL THIS SPECIAL BOND ELECTION FUND? Currently, the bond is estimated to serve district capital needs until 2028-2030. WHAT IS THE BUDGET FOR THE BOND? • Technology improvements, including student and teacher laptops, hardware, software, and copiers: $4.75 million • Student transportation vehicles (buses): $3.8 million • Student furniture and equipment: $4 million • Construct, remodel, and improve school facilities, buildings and grounds, (includes safety and security upgrades): $27,278,000 • Construct, remodel, and improve school facilities, buildings (including carpet) and grounds: $172,000 HOW WILL THE BOND HELP THE MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION BUDGET? The bond will pay off $10.8 million in debt for previous energy saving projects with bond funds to return approximately $800,000 back to the maintenance and operation budget each year. WHEN IS THE ELECTION? This will be an all mail in ballot election for all residents who live within the CCUSD boundaries. Ballots will arrive in mailboxes in early to mid-October. myhyperlocalnews.com

Kids’ Corner CREATIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE GRANDPARENTS AND IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE By Jenna-Lee Neff id you know that grandparents have their very own day? Typically the first Sunday after Labor Day, National Grandparents Day honors the special bond created between grandparents and their grandchildren, and encourages families to celebrate the love between the generations. This year, the special day is Sunday, September 12. Grandparents Day began when Marian McQuade envisioned a holiday that would encourage children to visit their grandparents and other aging adults. Around the age of 40, McQuade began organizing an annual “Past 80” party in Richwood, West Virginia, and she spent much of her free time visiting residents of nursing homes, organizing exercise groups and craft classes for the elderly, and helping residents record their precious family recipes so they wouldn’t be lost to time. McQuade took her vision of the grandparent holiday and introduced it to politicians near and far. Eventually it was made official national holiday in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. Whether your grandparents are near or far, we’ve put together tips on how you can make priceless memories this Grandparents Day. Here are five ways to spend the day with the grandparents in your life: • Have a sleepover: Many grandparents want to spend more time with their grandkids, so pack up the family and stay the night if grandma and grandpa are up for it.

• Ask them to show you their hobby: Chances are your grandparent has an interest vastly different from your own; show them you want to know more by asking them to share their hobby and help you learn. • Create crafty memories: Work on a project together. You could work on a special painting, make a wellloved recipe, or tie-dye T-shirts together. • Go on an adventure: Ask your grandparent to share some of their favorite places with you and make arrangements for a day and a time to go see them. • Take some of the household work off their plate: Whether it’s cleaning up an overgrown garden, taking out the trash, or taking care of their next grocery trip for them, you can show your love by taking something off their to-do list. Maybe the grandparents in your life live out of town or out of state. Or maybe they continue to social distance in the wake of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Whatever the case may be, here are five ways to celebrate the day without being face-to-face: • Pick up the phone or the iPad: Surprise grandparents with a much-needed phone call or a virtual visit on FaceTime or Zoom. • Write a letter: Let grandma and grandpa know you are thinking about them with a hand-written note. • Ask them to share a story: Next time you connect, ask grandparents to share stories from their childhood. • Send them something sweet: Whether it’s flowers for grandma or grandpa’s favorite candies, a small gift let’s them know you’re thinking of them.

Epic Ki ds our stories, our adventures EST. 2009

myhyperlocalnews.com

• Make a photo book: Don’t let distance cut them out. Making a photo book is a great way to share memories in a format they can enjoy over and over again.

If your grandparents have passed, here are three ways you can still honor them for Grandparents Day: • Share a fond memory of them with friends or family. • Take a break from the day and go do something you used to do together. • Keep their memory alive by writing down stories about your grandparents for future generations. If you don’t have grandparents in your life, you can still make this day special for an aging adult. There are many seniors who have no grandchildren, and some who have no immediate family at all. ‘Adopt’ a senior in your community and get to know them. They have plenty of love and wisdom to share. Many cities and nonprofits have official Adopt A Senior programs, too. We all know how important it is for kids to make memories with the older generation. The sharing of traditions, history and strengthening a supportive familial bond can influence children throughout their lives. The tips on this list can help make a positive impact in the life of an aging adult, and set the groundwork for an annual family celebration for years to come. THE LITTLE GYM

OF CAVE CREEK Serious fun that makes a difference to local kids and families

A

By Michelle Talsma Everson Photos Courtesy of The Little Gym of Cave Creek fter not one but two successful careers, local entrepreneur Dan Drummond wanted to use his entrepreneurial spirit and know-how to make a difference in the community. The answer? Founding The Little Gym of Cave Creek, located at 29455 N. Cave Creek Road, Suite 102, conveniently situated at Tatum and Cave Creek Roads. “The Little Gym of Cave Creek is so much more than a kids’ gym,” Drummond shares. “Opening The Little Gym of Cave Creek was the culmination of a great deal of research, a desire to give back to the community and make a difference, and months of training.” 16 • September 2021 • NORTH TATUM TIMES

A BUSINESS CREATED BY A BUSY FAMILY, FOR BUSY FAMILIES Drummond and his wife Marla Bradbury have lived in the Valley over 16 years and raised both of their sons, ages 11 and 12, here as well. Drummond shares that he enjoyed a successful career in the U.S. Air Force, then went on to succeed in restaurant marketing, working for well-known national brands. Because of his marketing work, he had to commute weekly from the Valley to Texas and back again. With a desire to travel less and be home more, he began to look for franchise business opportunities. He found The Little Gym brand and immediately thought it would be the perfect fit.

“We had no desire to leave the Valley; this is home for my family,” Drummond says. “I wanted to look for franchise opportunities that also made a difference in the community. The Little Gym was ideal for that because it helps children to build their self confidence in a positive and nurturing environment.” THE LITTLE GYM OF CAVE CREEK DIFFERENCE Drummond says that The Little Gym stands out because of its proprietary Three-Dimensional Learning philosophy that is 45 years in the making. The company describes it like this: “The Little Gym of Cave Creek: our environment is fun, but our purpose is serious. That’s why we embrace a proprietary philosophy called Three-Dimensional Learning, in myhyperlocalnews.com

which physical activity is a conduit for nurturing your whole child. The Three-Dimensional Learning approach to skill development means that every class we offer fosters growth in three holistic dimensions— Brain Boost!, Get Moving! and Citizen Kid!. Each dimension of learning helps your child grow into a well-rounded, well-adjusted super kid.” According to The Little Gym of Cave Creek, the three pillars work like this: • Get Moving: Developing strength, balance, flexibility, agility and coordination. • Brain Boost: Nurturing listening skills, imagination, concentration and decision-making. • Citizen Kid: Promoting sharing, teamwork, cooperation and leadership. “The Little Gym of Cave Creek is special because, through these three philosophies, it helps to contribute to the growth of local kids,” Drummond shares. The Little Gym of Cave Creek caters to children ages four months to twelve years old through quality movement, gymnastics, and dance classes offered at a variety of convenient dates and times. And, with a nearby location of Tatum and Cave Creek Roads, it’s also convenient for local families. CLASSES OFFERED INCLUDE: • Parent and child movement classes for babies and toddlers ages four months to three years. “Our Parent/Child classes promote early development and provide a strong foundation for your child’s critical first three years.” • Pre-K gymnastics for children ages three to six. These classes, “Help your child channel their boundless energy and reach developmental milestones in a structured environment.” • Gymnastics for grade school age kids (ages 6-12). “Your big kid will flip at the chance to tackle new challenges at their own skill level in a super fun environment.” • Fun dance classes for kids ages three to twelve. “For your living room leaper, bedroom ballerina, and budding break dancer, we offer the perfect program to harness all that toe-tapping energy.” Only open two years, Drummond is proud to let local families know that The Little Gym of Cave Creek is

a training gym for other franchisees. Essentially, if another entrepreneur wants to know how it’s done, they come to The Little Gym of Cave Creek to learn. “That’s important because it means we are adhering to the quality curriculum and teaching the classes the way they were meant to be taught—backed up by 45 years of knowledge and taught by great instructors,” he explains. For parents of older kids who want to do gymnastics, The Little Gym of Cave Creek is the place. “One misconception we often come across is that parents don’t realize that we teach classes for school age children too, and it’s real gymnastics classes taught by amazing, experienced instructors,” he shares. As a dad to his own two active boys, what Drummond says stands out about classes at The Little Gym of Cave Creek is the positive environment. “We teach great classes here; the instructors are always excited for the kids’ firsts and there is always a lot of positive energy in each class and interaction,” he explains. For parents and caregivers who are concerned about health and safety, Drummond and his team assure that the gym is extremely clean. “We clean and disinfect everything daily,” he asserts. Moving into the future, Drummond hopes to see more families join in the fun at The Little Gym of Cave Creek so the business can grow and expand its offerings. Eventually, he’d like to offer more practice times (there are already a variety to choose from), and special events like parties and parent night outs. “I consider this my third career and, hands down, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done,” he says. “Nothing compares to seeing the joy on the kids’ faces when they are in classes here at The Little Gym of Cave Creek.” Interested families can try their first class at The Little Gym of Cave Creek free of charge. Then, once signed up, it’s a low monthly fee to reserve a spot in a weekly class. The Little Gym of Cave Creek is located at Tatum and Cave Creek Roads. Health

Back to School: Healthy Kids, Healthy Families By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician

I

t is that time of year again—the kids are back in school! This means more circulating illnesses and germs. During this time, we can be more susceptible to illnesses and it can be helpful to prepare the immune system for the school season. The germs, viruses and illnesses our children are exposed can make the entire family susceptible, but there are some simple, natural ways to strengthen and support immunity for the entire family. DIET: Foods high in sugar and processed foods can decrease the immune response to illness. This weakening of the immune system can make us more vulnerable to illnesses. Instead, focus on nutrient dense foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats and protein, which support a healthy immune system. In addition to food, it is extremely important to stay well hydrated. These tips are also useful during an illness to help strengthen the immune response. SLEEP: Eliminate electronics at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Electronics overstimulate the brain, which can lead to difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. Implement a healthy sleep routine that will last throughout the entire school year. The better quality sleep we have, the stronger our immune system will be. GASTROINTESTINAL SUPPORT: Our digestive system is directly correlated with our immune system. Constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating are all factors that can decrease overall immunity. If any of these conditions are present, it is important to find the root cause and resolve any underlying factors. It can be

beneficial for children to take a probiotic to support the immune system and balance the gut flora. Food sensitivities and/or food allergies can also hinder the immune system and should be avoided. NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES: Vitamin D and Vitamin B12 are the most common deficiencies that can hinder the immune system. It is important to have levels checked to ensure proper supplementation. A high quality multivitamin, zinc and vitamin C can also be a great addition to a daily supplement regimen if needed. HERBAL REMEDIES: There are many herbs that can support the immune system and it is always best to consult with your naturopathic physician for guidance and proper dosing. My favorite herb for the entire family is sambucus/ elderberry. It is well tolerated, tastes delicious and is an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants to support the immune system. It can be taken to strengthen the immune system as well as used during acute illness to help shorten the duration. You can find over the counter syrups or make your own, which is a fun activity for the entire family. See your naturopathic physician for more individualized support. Every Homeowner Needs an Estate Plan By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

W

ith the real estate market a hot topic, I thought I would talk about the importance of having an estate plan if you own a home. If you bought a second home during the pandemic, you probably need a revocable trust – especially if that vacation home is in another state. Why do you need a plan? First, we must be sure that someone can step in if you are incapacitated. What will happen to your home if you are unable to handle your finances? Who will pay your mortgage, keep the electricity on, and keep things running? Who will sign to sell the home if you need the money from a sale? With a proper estate plan, you appoint the person who will have the power to take care of your home, sell it if needed, and take care of you. Without that, the court appoints someone in a costly proceeding called conservatorship.

Second, what will happen to your home when you die? Without a proper estate plan, it might not go to who you want to have it. If you want your spouse to have your home, let’s plan for that. But what

Call us today to schedule your

FREE Estate Planning Consultation

about after your spouse dies? Without an estate plan, if the home and other assets are in both you and your spouse’s names, then all of it passes to the surviving spouse. If you pass away first, your spouse gets to decide who will receive the property when he or she dies. If he or she dies without an estate plan, the law says that the house or the proceeds goes to his or her heirs, whoever that may be – but if you have no common children, your heirs get nothing.

Remember, when you choose Libby you are not only hiring someone to prepare your Estate Plan, you are choosing a seasoned Estate Planning attorney to guide you through this often complex process and raise questions you might not have considered. You are choosing an experienced professional to create a plan that serves your family in the way that you want and,

For a single person with more than one child, it is important to have a plan that appoints one person to handle the estate. Without that, all three children have an equal right to serve as personal representative of your estate. If they all agree on who should serve, no problem. But if there is any disagreement, it could cause delays in getting control over your affairs, meaning your mortgage may go unpaid, and the utilities could be shut off before anyone has standing to take over and maintain the home.

This dream destination is not only a great getaway for couples looking for a romantic vacation, but also a perfect spot for families or a getaway with friends. The luxury wellness resort is located on beachfront property, which is ideal for guests who are looking to enjoy the sun and sand. There are two sparkling pools with swim-up bars, endless rows of chaise lounges and day beds, surrounded by hundreds of palm trees and lush greenery, making you feel like you’re in a secluded oasis. Ocean lovers can take advantage of non-motorized water sport rentals, like paddle boarding and kayaking, while the kids enjoy the Westin Kids Club and outdoor playground. When it comes to food, there is no lack of amazing meal options at the Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta. At Arrecifes Seafood & Steakhouse, guests

can dine on juicy steak and flavorful seafood as they gaze out at Banderas Bay at the open-air beach club. The ocean front picnic is catered by the resort’s Arrecifes restaurant, featuring a gourmet selection of charcuterie, sandwiches, and of course —plenty of bubbly to help toast to the good life.

Whether you are ready to take on an outdoor hike, snorkeling and scuba diving adventures, or if you are simply looking for serenity and pampering, the Westin is here to make sure your desires are met. In the current travel environment, there are concerns about returning safely to the U.S. Rest assured, the Westin has you covered. For any guest staying three nights or more on property, there is complimentary COVID-19 testing offered on-site, so you will be able to meet travel requirements to get back home.

This fall and winter season, travelers seeking a wellness-focused sunny escape can take advantage of the resort’s “Detox for a Better You” package that offers a deluxe room with a private balcony overlooking the Banderas Bay. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal

MOVIE REVIEWS The Suicide Squad

with their actors bringing to the screen the humanity and the pain of their pasts. Most of all, it’s a movie that’s confident in what it is and, in today’s big budget market, that’s a rarity. The Green Knight

Old A group of tourists find themselves trapped on a beach that causes them to age rapidly. M. Night Shyamalan is one of our best thriller directors today and Old is a reminder of that. It’s an unusual movie, with performances that could be called stale and distracted. However, given the disorienting and frantic nature of the story, it’s appropriate. The fear of the situation is one where no one can act normal, whether by their own emotions or their own degradation. Shyamalan shows that through his script and Mike Gioulakis’ unique camerawork. The actors do an incredible job keeping their personalities consistent as they grow older, while still changing. You even buy into their sudden change in intelligence and speech. It’s not scary, but more a creepy film that effectively preys on your fears of aging. Don’t Breathe 2

figures show up to take the girl, his true nature is revealed. Don’t Breathe 2 has an interesting idea, particularly when questioning the morals of each character you meet. The problem, as with many bad movies with cool ideas, is the execution. It is unable to commit to any of their characters being grey, whether in some forced “twist” or in a pathetic attempt to make you feel bad for them. This leads to one-dimensional characters and underwhelming performances. Even the usually great Stephen Lang seems bored. The movie seems more obsessed with being hardcore and gross rather than telling a good story. To be fair it is, but part of what made the first film a nice surprise was that it limited its gore. Rodo Sayagues is decent in his directorial debut, but not much of his work stands out from Fede Alvarez’s previous film. It’s a real disappointment.

SEPTEMBER RELEASES Task Force X is sent on another mission, with members old and new. This time they are headed into the jungles of an island containing secrets that will change the life course for several of our beloved/hated characters. The Suicide Squad is the kind of comic book movie that is rarely seen. It wears its inspiration on its sleeve (classic war movie like The Dirty Dozen) while still carving its identity, thanks to its creator James Gunn’s mixture of humor and heart. The action is large and violent. Its mixture of practical and digital effects blending together so well while embracing the cartoonish nature of comics. The mixture of new and old characters brings to life what the film is really all about: lost souls finding their purpose. Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher 2 are clearly the standouts

King Arthur’s nephew goes on a quest to fulfil a task from a mysterious plantlike figure. A film that requires a lot of patience, The Green Knight rewards those who commit to what it has going for it. Dev Patel’s performance walks the line between bravery and arrogance. He gives his character several layers of personality. The slow nature of the movie matches the tone, as each chapter is, in a way, its own little movie with a different tone and feeling. Sometimes it’s horror, sometimes dramatic, but it works. Each supporting character plays an equally important role in the overall story. Visually, it’s one of the most gorgeous movies you’ll see this year. The story seems to jump off the screen and come to life. A true work of art.

Time To Buy Or Sell? Consider Who You Select To Partner With!

Here’s What Our Clients Have Said About Us!

Holly and Team are fantastic. I have purchased and sold many homes over the years and have not experienced the level of expertise , professionalism and communication that Holly displays. She absolutely has her finger on the pulse of the market. Her ability to stage and market my house were second to none. She proactively followed up on all showings and provided me with daily updates. She sold the house within six days at asking price. She is a true professional that I highly recommend. Seller/June 2021

Holly and her Team of professionals were an absolute joy to work with during a very tense time. The current real estate market is challenging for buyers, but Holly had the wisdom and expertise to structure an offer that was chosen over 8 or 9 other offers (and no, we did not offer cash!). Holly always made us feel like valued clients -- she answered every question, listened to our concerns and answered every text or call promptly and with genuine enthusiasm. And we texted

a lot. When it came time to sell our house, Holly’s team gave impeccable advice, from staging to the particulars of showing a house during Covid. Throughout the process, Holly and her team showed nothing but integrity, reliability and intelligence. If we ever engage in another real estate transaction, we would certainly hope to work with the Henbest Team again. We would highly recommend them to everyone. Buyer & Seller/June 2021

Partner With the BEST!

The HenBEST Team! See Holly’s Housing News Article on Page 21!

Holly and The Henbest Team recently sold our house in the Cielo subdivision of Desert Ridge for a record price. We’re talking shattered previous sold prices of homes that were both recent and larger in size than our house.

Holly is a true expert, she sets proper expectations, keeps her clients informed, has a team that runs like clockwork and makes the process extremely easy, and beyond that she is a great person and a joy to work with. Oh and also she will

In this super competitive market, we were so thankful to have Holly and the Henbest Team representing us as buyers. We most likely would not have been able to purchase this home without their expert advice and negotiating skills. There has probably never been a time when choosing the best agent is as critical as it is now. If you want the best shot at a successful home purchase, I recommend that you go with the Best - The Henbest Team. Buyer/June 2021

negotiate on your behalf like Pitbull!! This is our 3rd transaction with Holly and her team and we really can’t say enough good things about them!!

Your team is incredible and you are all so professional and super efficient. Thank you for selling my home for $55,000 above list price in one day! I highly recommend the Henbest Team to everyone.
