City News ‘Quiet Room’ Provides Emotional Escape for Emergency Dispatchers By Jenna-Lee Neff WHEN SOMEONE SPENDS THEIR DAY ANSWERING EMERGENCY CALLS, MANY OF WHICH ARE OFTEN LIFE OR DEATH SITUATIONS, IT IS LIKELY TO HAVE A STRONG IMPACT ON THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. This is the reality for numerous emergency dispatchers in Phoenix, where in 2019 there were nearly a million calls answered for police and fire service alone, according to the city. “Our staff are frequently talking to people in crisis on what may be the worst day of their lives,” says Phoenix Police communications manager Myla Marovich. A study on duty-related trauma exposure in emergency dispatchers showed that they report high levels of peritraumatic distress, which may increase the risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder. As the study highlights, often emergency dispatchers must quickly assess situations and the dangers involved while remaining calm and having limited control. It was the tremendous emotional weight of the

work they do that led to the original creation of a ‘quiet room’ as a place for emergency dispatchers to decompress. But according to Marovich, the former room was not very peaceful.

“The quiet room is a place for employees to retreat to when they need some time to relax and gather their thoughts during their hectic workday,” Marovich shares. “Having a place to decompress for a few moments from that high-stress environment is important for our people to be able to perform their best work.”
“Operators were happy with the outcome and grateful for the newly remodeled space,” Marovich says.
Seeing the need to update the space, Phoenix Police Crisis Intervention Team Detective Sabina Taylor reached out to the Rotary Club and pitched the idea of a sponsored, updated quiet room. “She was an advocate for Communications and saw the need to have this space be a more relaxing and usable space for our operators,” Marovich says. “She is the one who spearheaded the project.” To create the new room, a former storage room was repurposed. The first steps in designing the atmosphere was to lay new flooring and put a fresh
Marovich shares that since its creation, feedback on the room has been overwhelmingly positive and shows emergency dispatchers are happy with their quiet get away, with many saying the new space is beautiful and relaxing and comparing the atmosphere to the mood found in spas. “Our operators utilize this space regularly,” she says. “We had operators tell us that now it is something they would actually partake in where before they avoided the room due to the general state of it.” The project took about $5,000 to complete in its entirety. City News Local Family-Owned Business Donates AC Units to Nonprofit In Need TEMPERATURES IN THE PHOENIX AREA HAVE BEEN WELL ABOVE 105 FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. It’s been a record-breaking summer. For nonprofit organizations that have been hit hard financially due to COVID-19, the cost of purchasing and installing much-needed AC units can be devastating to their budgets. Recently, Reliance Heating & AC coordinated a free purchase and install of two new AC units for 501(c)(3) Teen Challenge in Desert Hills. Reliance Heating & AC is a north Phoenix familyowned company that has donated their installation services, and two brand new air conditioning units— compliments of Trane and Smiley Crane. This team effort totaled $15,000 worth of equipment and service for the Desert Hills location.

This month, and all year-round, Reavie and his team of real life superheroes raise funds to empower children suffering acute physical and sexual abuse by supporting advocacy and child crisis centers in Arizona to ensure the children visiting have all their needs addressed. “Put on the Cape (POTC) uses superhero mythology to empower children victimized by physical or sexual abuse or who may be witness to heinous crimes,” Reavie explains. “Superheroes overcome adversity and tragedy and use their new found strength to serve others… POTC raises awareness for family advocacy centers and the work done within those walls. The centers have no budget for toys, clothing, food, and basic necessities like diapers, underpants, toothbrushes, shampoo and other basic needs people sometimes take for granted. We organize events around the country asking for donations of superhero action figures, Barbie dolls, superhero themed t-shirts, and those basic necessities. Our mission is to provide those items to the centers, so they can take the time they normally spend fundraising and focus 100 percent on the child.” Superhero September started in 2015 as a one-time promotion that grew each year—so much so, it was the catalyst for creating POTC. “I decided that Superhero September limited me to holding events in just September,” Reavie shares. “I incorporated all events, intellectual properties, and trademarks into Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope.” myhyperlocalnews.com
Like many nonprofits, POTC is feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their fundraising efforts. “It [the pandemic] has devastated our ability to do what we’ve done for the last five years. Our signature events were designed to go right to the public. We had seven events planned for March and April and had to cancel them all,” Reavie says. “Our sponsors are hurting and unable to donate as they have in the past. I began to realize I needed to change our approach to fundraising and our advocacy.” To help make up the difference, the POTC team is turning to localized virtual events. To find these events, community members can go to putonthecape.org and click the link for upcoming events or find Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope on Facebook and look under the event section. All events are virtual and support seven child advocacy centers and 10 cities across the Valley. In addition to the virtual events, community members can get involved by organizing a donation drive to support the center in their city, Reavie explains. “All centers have a wish list of items they need to give to children and their families. We can give them [community members] that list and they in turn can empower their business or school to participate. You can make a difference with donating one action figure or $10. I have seen first hand the change in a child when handed their favorite superhero action figure. They become happy, animated, and child-like again. Someone stole their right to be a little kid. Education Beloved Principal Remembered for His Kindness and Unwavering Love for His Students and Family Contributed by Sunset Canyon Elementary School
T
he staff of Sunset Canyon Elementary School, in the Paradise Valley School District, would like to introduce you to our principal, David Franks. He was beloved by his staff, students, parents, and community members alike. Students celebrated “Mr. Frank’s Day” in early March by wearing ties and sharing messages of appreciation on cutout ties. Mr. Franks wore a tie each day to work. The students could count on Mr. Franks to give them a happy hello by name each day. He shared his enthusiasm for learning with all of the students he encountered. When you were having a rough day, you could count on Mr. Franks to offer an ear to listen to your troubles and ideas to lift you up. He was supportive to all who were in need. He came to Paradise Valley Schools 15 years ago teaching first grade. He worked his way up through the ranks to become principal of Sunset Canyon
Elementary School seven years ago. He had come to education after having worked for a team building organization leading people through nature while having to rely on each other. He loved hiking and mountain climbing. He especially enjoyed these nature moments with his wife and three daughters on weekends, holidays, and summers. Mr. Franks brought his love of the outdoors to his job. For our 6th grade clap-out to celebrate students’ accomplishments, he rigged his portaledge used for mountain climbing so that he was hanging from the solar panels at our school. The students loved this, and so did he. The huge smile on Mr. Frank’s face expressed his happiness of sharing this love of the outdoors with our students. Sadly, Mr. Franks was taken away from us the week after this celebration. He passed away on May 26. Due to the pandemic, huge gatherings were discouraged to mourn him and share our grief, but the Sunset Canyon community found a way. Students, Ages 3-12 staff, and families came by the school and hung ties on the fence that included messages about how much we loved this

generous, loving, and kind man. David Franks will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him and missed forever by his students, staff, colleagues, family, and friends.

unday, September 13 is National Grandparents Day, a special time to recognize the grandparents in our lives. With the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations may look different this year. One group who don’t have the option to social distance from their grandchildren are grandparents raising them. More than 60,000 grandparents in Arizona are responsible for their grandchildren. Below are some resources for grandfamilies. ARIZONA FAMILY RESOURCES Available at azfamilyresources.org, this website—supported by AASK (Aid to Adoption of Special Kids)— provides information on the foster care system, which many grandparents raising grandchildren have to navigate. AASK’s website, aask-az.org, also offers kinship licensing, case management and advocacy. ARIZONA GRANDPARENT AMBASSADORS (AZGA) With more info available at azga.org, the AZGA is a “volunteer support network of grandparents who are raising grandchildren.” The group hosts “workshops, monthly steering committee meetings and quarterly newsletter for members.” GRANDFAMILIES.ORG This easy-to-navigate website serves as a “national legal resource in support of grandfamilies within and outside the child welfare system.” Users can easily navigate a variety of pertinent topics and access an Arizona-specific fact sheet that lists many local organizations that help kinship caregivers. Fight T he Fall FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center Helps Keep You On Your Feet

his month ushers in the fall season—and it also happens to be that September 21 to 25 is National Fall Prevention Awareness Week. Luckily, the local FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center is here to help raise awareness of fall prevention and offer tools and resources to keep you on your feet. “The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot of things. One thing that’s still the same? Falling is not a normal part of aging,” according to the National Council on Aging. “At FYZICAL, we want to make the
public aware of what a problem falls are and that they can do something about it,” says Sandi Salazar, physical therapist, and the owner of Phoenix’s FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center.
Salazar shares that international research shows that falls have gotten worse since the COVID-19 pandemic due to a decline in physical activity and increase in isolation.
To do so, FYZICAL is embarking on a campaign to help us #fightthefall.
“As the world contends with the long-term effects of COVID-19 on physical and emotional health, what can we learn from other countries whose first cases occurred months before the U.S.? For instance, in Australia in June, approximately two months after their ‘first wave’ had passed, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), reported that falls due to COVID-19 physical inactivity and isolation were up 30 percent,” she says.
So, how big of a problem is falling? According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), each year, more than one in four older adults aged 65 and older will fall. Among older adults, falls are the number one cause of injuries and death from injury. This represents 29 million falls, 3 million emergency department visits, 800,000 hospitalizations, and 28,000 deaths, cites the CDC.
“...While well meaning, infection control measures taken by aged care providers have had the perverse effect of accelerating physical, mental and emotional decline in many cases….. The lack of activity and exercise will have significantly impacted …. their mobility, strength and balance and their cognitive and mental health,” the APA found. In addition to being dangerous, falls are also costly. “Older adult falls result in more than $31 billion in annual Medicare costs, according to the CDC. “These costs will surge unless we recognize the problem and focus on prevention.” And, while much of fall research focuses on older adults, Salazar says that falls impact people of all ages. For example, according to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries for all children ages 0 to 19. “Every day, approximately 8,000 children are treated in U.S. emergency rooms for fall-related injuries. This adds up to almost 2.8 million children each year,” cites the CDC. “We see clients across the age spectrum,” Salazar says. “For example, there are often a lot of balance issues in youth sports due to concussions and muscle imbalances resulting from repetitive motions related to their sport. This isn’t just an older adult issue.” So what are some of the keys to fall prevention in the first place? Salazar notes that, like with many health and safety issues, the answer often lies in prevention. One tool is having your balance checked.

“No matter what age you are, your balance can always be improved - in fact, even those who do not live with a balance or gait disorder can still suffer from balance-related injuries that occur from poor posture or impaired reflexes,” according to FYZICAL. “However, if you frequently notice an imbalance, dizziness, or unsteadiness that makes you feel as if you may fall over at any given time, it is a sign that you may be living with a balance or gait disorder.”

Balance disorders, and balance issues in general, typically stem from the vestibular system, according to Salazar. “The vestibular system is a delicate collection of fluidfilled chambers and sensory nerves located in the inner ear. Your vestibular system helps manage your ‘proprioception,’ or sense of position, and when this is altered, it can be difficult to keep yourself steady.”
So how can someone tell that they need to improve their balance? According to FYZICAL, this simple test may be an indicator that you should seek physical therapy intervention: • Stand barefoot next to a counter, sink, or chair with your hand gently grasping the counter surface. • Put one foot directly in front of the other, so that one heel is touching the opposite toes. • Gently lift your hand up, but keep it close to the counter in case you need to grab it quickly. Try to hold this for 10 seconds (only do this if you feel safe or have someone nearby to help you). • Now try it with your eyes closed. • Do you wobble or lose your balance? This means your balance needs work. Some reasons for balance issues could be: • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) • Concussions • Deconditioning: if you don’t use it, you lose it • Poor posture • Migraines • Injury or ailment • Neurological issues, such as brain injuries, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease • Meniere’s disease • Vestibular neuritis To help locals with balance issues and fall prevention, Salazar and her team myhyperlocalnews.com

Flu in a World of COVID-19: Why This Year’s Flu Shot is Critical By Dr. Tara Ostrom
I
t’s 100+ degrees out, so you may not be thinking about flu season. However, there are sporadic cases of flu here in Arizona, according to community health data from Maricopa County, and already doctors are recommending people make a plan to get their annual flu shot when it becomes locally available. In addition, this year’s COVID-19 pandemic has shaken our nation and, of the many lessons we’ve learned as a result of this public health crisis, one of the most impactful is the importance of immunizations and vaccinations. For example, in part due to COVID-19, 30 percent of Americans said they are now more likely to get a flu vaccine this year. Unfortunately, many adults still are under the mistaken impression that vaccinations are not needed for themselves or their children or are concerned about side effects. The reality is quite the opposite: in the U.S., vaccines have greatly reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases that once routinely killed or harmed infants, children and adults. This year, seasonal flu vaccination is especially important as the stress on hospitals will be greatest if the COVID-19 and influenza epidemics overlap and peak around the same time. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that cause COVID-19 will both be spreading in the fall and winter. So while vaccination is important, given pandemic concerns, how you go about getting your flu shot may look a little different. Additionally, some common places where people get their flu shots, such as workplaces, may not offer them this year due to social distancing challenges.
To help minimize risks, there are certain safety precautions and new protocols that health care facilities are implementing in order to help ensure that getting a flu shot is safe and accessible for all patients. For example, OptumCare Primary Care has been following the CDC’s guidelines to help ensure safe delivery of care during vaccination visits including: 1. Screening all patients for COVID-19 symptoms both when they schedule their appointment and when they arrive. 2. Assigning a dedicated screener at each clinic entrance checking the temperature of all patients, visitors and staff prior to coming into the facility. 3. Following social distancing protocols while waiting. 4. Ensuring all rooms are disinfected after each patient’s visit. 5. All staff, patients, and visitors wear surgical masks and staff practice respiratory hygiene, cough etiquette and hand hygiene. This year’s health crisis has made it a critical year for ensuring that you receive your annual flu vaccination. The cost of the flu vaccine is often covered by your health plan, whether you buy health insurance on your own, receive health benefits from your employer, or through a Medicare or state Medicaid program. Check with your health insurer and then schedule an appointment by calling your physician or going to a nearby urgent care clinic. he Revocable Living Trust is valuable for many estate planning needs, but one of the most obvious is the avoidance of all the time and expense of probate.
I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. Your assets, the things you worked and saved hard to have go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee. If you can’t take care of your treasure chest anymore, either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets in your treasure chest. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, stock brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in
your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign and record a deed to the house. The deed says that John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. You do the same thing with your bank account, brokerage account and other assets. With the Trust, while you are alive and competent, you control your financial affairs much the same as you do without a trust. You manage your assets, receive the income, pay bills, buy and sell property and so on. You have full control. Your Trust also designates who will be in charge if you can’t manage things any longer, either because of death of incapacity. The Trust tells the successor trustee how they are to manage the trust
assets and distribute money for your benefit if you are incapacitated. The Trust also contains your instructions for wrapping up your estate and distributing your assets at death. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, the person who you have asked to be your successor trustee will certainly notice a difference in how much smoother it is to step in and take care of your financial affairs at incapacity or death. Tortilla Flat A Piece of Arizona’s Old West History

hile Arizona has come a long way from its Old West roots as Phoenix becomes one the country’s largest and fastest-growing cities, there are still places that hold a piece of Arizona’s timeless history and transport its visitors back to simpler times, when the not-yet-state served as a mining destination within relatively unexplored land. One of these places is Tortilla Flat, a Western town in the Tonto National Forest approximately 30 minutes outside of Apache Junction. The town’s history dates back to 1904 when it was established as a stop along the Apache Trail and as a settlement for workers who hand-built the Roosevelt Dam. Over the years, Tortilla Flat has had several iterations – even rebuilding on the opposite side of the road from where it presently sits after a flash flood in 1943. More than four decades later, Tortilla Flat was forced to rebuild yet again, after a 1987 fire that began in the restaurant engulfed nearly the entire town. However, the history hasn’t been all disaster – the town has welcomed famous guests including the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Barbara Streisand. It’s also been home to a zoo and even served as the backdrop of Western films, as well as helping to inspire the book “Thunder God’s Gold,” and subsequent film, “Lust for Gold.” Today, the town is a family-friendly attraction and relic of Arizona’s past. It is a fully independent town and has six residents that call it home. Residents and frequent visitors of Tortilla Flat have seen recent upgrades to the

town property including a revamped menu at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant and new decorative touches. The town continues to maintain its history as it looks toward its next 100 years, refreshing the look of property, partnering with more local vendors for the mercantile, and remaining a familyfriendly destination. During a trip to Tortilla Flat visitors can enjoy scenic mountain views just minutes away from Canyon Lake, taste southwestern cuisine at the restaurant and saloon, shop Arizonainspired gifts at the mercantile, or try prickly pear gelato at the Country Store – known for being the largest purveyor of prickly pear gelato in the world, as well as a destination for necessary goods and one-of-a-kind food items like prickly pear honey and cactus salsa. Before leaving, all Tortilla Flat visitors should try some of the town saloon’s famous chili, which has been made using the same recipe for 80 years and is now incorporated into Tortilla Flat’s Killer Chili Dog, Chili Burger and the classic Killer Bowl of Chili. Tortilla Flat also boasts a museum that is an exact replica of the schoolhouse where the local children gathered to learn in the 1930s. While exploring the small museum, guests will learn about the development of Tortilla Flat, including the history of its owners dating back through to early 1900s. Community Honoring America’s Veterans Names First Executive Director By Jenna-Lee Neff

ocal nonprofit Honoring America’s Veterans (HAV) recently appointed Navy veteran Paula Pedene to the position of executive director. The move comes as the organization develops virtual recognition events in place of their annual Phoenix Veterans Day Parade. “As a Navy veteran and one who is a strong advocate for veterans and their needs, I have personally witnessed for decades the impact honor and recognition events offer in helping our veterans heal,” says Pedene. “Those personal stories of healing I have heard since 1997 make this a fulfilling role for me.” Founded in 2012, Honoring America’s Veterans did not have an executive director before this point. Instead, the organization focused on growing and working with the board of directors to build out the position so they could easily identify the perfect candidate when the time came. “It’s an honor for me to serve as the first executive director of Honoring America’s Veterans,” Pedene says, explaining the process the board took to establish what the organization needed from a leader. “Fortunately, the board knew I would be retiring from federal service, and due to my efforts in founding the parade, helping to create HAV, my operations and public relations expertise fit what they needed.” Honoring America’s Veterans keeps the Phoenix Veterans Day Parade alive after Veterans Affairs moved away from the annual event, which began in 1997. With more than 500,000 veterans in Maricopa County, the organization now hosts the state’s largest Veterans Day event in order to pay tribute to those who have served and show them support in the healing process. “Our veterans tell us that by remembering them on Veterans Day, we help them heal,” Pedene shares. Alongside the “Honor Our Heroes” program, students in grades 9-12 are participating in a creative essay contest on veterans and the impact of military service.
